Design features of various types of sip panels. SIP panels: what it is, material features, advantages and useful properties How to distinguish a good SIP panel from a hack

More recently, it has become very popular to build houses with a wooden frame. Now there is a constant search for new and improvement of existing technologies of frame construction. The article will describe the stages of building a frame house using a relatively new technology from sip panels.

What is a sip panel - manufacturing process

Sip panel or, as it is also called, sandwich panel, is a multifunctional building material. You can use it in almost any environment. The cost of the panels is small, and the potential for their application is practically unlimited.

Wall sandwich panels are a three-layer material. Let's see how they are made.

How is the process of manufacturing sip panels - step by step diagram

Step 1: Selection of materials

For the outer layers, durable material is used: fibreboard, oriented strand board, wooden boards, magnesite boards, galvanized steel. Plate thickness 9 or 12 mm.

For sip panels, it is better to exclude the use of wood, as it is flammable, short-lived, and also the most time-consuming to process. Most often, for the construction of houses, OSB boards are used in SIP panels. The recommended thickness is 12 mm. For load-bearing structures, they can be adapted for use in high humidity.

OSB is made from wood shavings, the diameter of which does not exceed 0.6 mm. The length, as a rule, is not more than 140 mm. Such chips are laid perpendicular to each other in three layers. An adhesive waterproof resin is added during the manufacturing process. In the future, from high pressure and temperature, this material is pressed. The result is a plate with increased strength and at the same time high elasticity. The outer layer of OSB boards is also waterproof. With the help of wood tools, the slabs are very easy to saw. OSB holds the fasteners through the way the wood chips are laid, and therefore differs significantly from other similar materials where the resin provides retention of the fasteners.

The insulation is placed between two rigid protective layers of material. For this layer, expanded polystyrene, polyurethane foam, or mineral wool are used. The last two heaters are non-combustible. When choosing a brand of foam, you need to pay attention to its flammability and flame decay time. The thickness of the material, depending on the thermophysical properties of the frame house, can vary from 50 to 250 mm. If more preference is given to mineral wool, then a parabarrier film must be laid between it and the inner slab.

When using mineral wool in SIP panels, a material is used that has a density of 100-120 kg / m³. Such a product does not burn and cannot spread fire. When heated, the binders can emit unpleasant odors, but, nevertheless, such a thermal insulation material is much more environmentally friendly than polystyrene foam. But mineral wool increases the weight of the sandwich panel. When compared with polystyrene foam, the weight will be 2 times more. Therefore, this type of insulation is rarely used in sip panels. The high cost also negatively affects the choice of this material. The use of mineral wool as a heater in a house made of sandwich panels can cost 1.5–2 times more.

For mass production in sip panels, expanded polystyrene with a density of 25 kg / m³ (PSB-S-25 or PSB-25) is used. Due to its lightness and low cost, this insulation is very popular. It is 98% carbon dioxide. Due to this, it has a low thermal conductivity and, accordingly, high thermal insulation properties.

Such material has a sufficiently high strength, resistant to fungus and moisture. But in polystyrene foam, mice like to gnaw out nests in which they then settle. The purpose of this material is, first of all, external wall insulation. The thickness of the insulation depends on what kind of house will be built. For permanent residence, the heat insulator must be no thinner than 50 mm. For the construction of a summer cottage, a maximum of 20 mm of such insulation is sufficient. We should not forget that polystyrene foam burns, melts from exposure to open fire and emits acrid black smoke. The fire safety of the structure is partially ensured by the fact that the foam in the SIP panels is covered with OSB boards.

Step 2: Selecting the Right Adhesive

To connect all layers of a sandwich panel, the adhesive must retain its qualities all the time while the house is standing. Therefore, such material must withstand various humidity, temperature changes and other adverse conditions. The toxicity of the adhesive after polymerization must be completely eliminated. When assembling sip panels in Canada, the USA and the EU, the following brands have proven themselves from the best side: Macroplast UR 7229, Macroplast UR 7228 and Kleiberit 502.8.

Step 3: Production of sip panels

The OSB board must be evenly coated with glue over the entire plane. Then you need to lay a sheet of expanded polystyrene on top of the plate. After that, you will need to re-apply the polymer composition and cover with a second OSB plate.

Glue must be applied within no more than 10 minutes. When this material is exposed to air for more than the specified time, polymerization begins. The glue foams up a lot and expands in volume. In this case, it is necessary to carry out pressing with pressing of the elements to be glued within 18 tons. This is done with a powerful press. Glued wall sandwich panels must be cured for 2–3 hours. The glue dries completely in 15-30 hours. After that, the protruding edges of the insulation must be cut off.

What will be the foundation?

Frame houses from prefabricated sip panels are light enough, so a reinforced foundation is not needed. For such structures, it is advisable to use a shallow foundation. In addition to this option, a pile, columnar or slab type of frame house foundation is also used in construction practice. For example, a pile foundation can be made in any season of the year, in any weather. Its installation can be completed in the shortest possible time, large financial costs are not required. There is no need to carry out painstaking earthworks.

For a frame house where wall panels are used, we recommend using one of the most popular and classic support options - a strip foundation. To do this, you will need to mark the construction site. Then dig a trench 50–60 cm deep. The width can be made 40–50 cm. In the next step, you will need to make a sand and gravel pillow of 20 cm, which must be tamped down.

Then you can proceed to the installation of formwork. Boards 10-15 cm wide are suitable for this. As an alternative, moisture-resistant plywood is allowed. Be sure to make the formwork 50 cm above the soil level.

Next, the reinforcing cage is connected. For this, rods 10-15 mm in diameter are most often used. After that, a concrete solution is prepared. A concrete mixer will significantly speed up this process. It is necessary to regularly ram the solution poured into the formwork using a vibrator. This event will remove air bubbles from the concrete mixture, making the foundation created stronger. When all the pouring work has been done, the concrete solution must be allowed to brew and gain strength. Experts recommend that the foundation stand for 3-4 weeks before the walls are erected.

Installation of the frame and floor - what you need to know

This process begins with attaching a strapping frame wooden belt to the foundation. The cross section for such a beam is most often used 250x150 mm. In the corners, the wall boards are interconnected with the help of grooves made. Anchors, as a rule, are used 10–12 mm in diameter, and their length should be 35 cm. They are required to be installed at a distance of 1.5–2 m from each other. In the corners, it is better to use two anchors. Bolt heads must be recessed.

Wall building tricks

Wall elements are installed after fixing the guide boards on the strapping beam. Their size depends on the thickness of the wall panel. It is necessary to lay such boards taking into account the indentation from the edge of the timber by 10-12 mm. Be sure to observe a strict horizontal. In order to make their fasteners, you will need 70x5 mm self-tapping screws. It is better to make indents between them 35–40 cm.

In the corners, two wall framing panels are installed by sliding them over the guide boards. The grooves must first be foamed. Using a level, you need to align vertically and horizontally. After that, it is necessary to fasten the sandwich panels with self-tapping screws to the guide boards. The mounting step is required to be 150 mm. The panels also need to be fastened together. To do this, you need boards with a cross section of 50–200 mm. They are installed between two panels. To make a reliable fixation, self-tapping screws 12x200 mm are required.

Recently, modern materials have become very popular, which allow the construction of even the largest buildings in a short time. Basically, such structures are built from SIP - panels. Therefore, today we will find out what is SIP panel for building a house, let's see the reviews.

Why do you need a SIP panel, and what is it

SIP - a panel is a universal building material that is used for the construction of various frame buildings. SIP panel (SIP - Structural Insulated Panel) what it is consists of three layers. The main layer is the insulation layer. This layer is located in the middle, on both sides it is covered with OSB sheets. All layers of SIP panels are bonded with polyurethane adhesive. The connection technology takes place under a special press and a pressure of 18 tons.

Each SIP panel has 3 layers. This has already been discussed above. We need to talk about each of them. So, an indicative chipboard (OSB) is made from several layers of wood chips. All layers of wood chips are connected with each other with the help of resins. This material has good strength and some elasticity. Therefore, every day indicative particle boards are becoming more popular. Foamed plastic is used for the SIP panel insulation. Expanded polystyrene is easy to manufacture. In addition, this material retains heat very well.

It is worth noting that the construction of structures from SIP panels came to our country from Canada. Therefore, residential buildings that were built from this material are today called "Canadian". Despite the fact that this method of construction has long been used in many countries, our residents treat this construction of houses with great distrust. Basically, people choose more reliable materials. Therefore, the building material - brick, today is still in authority.

Important advantages of SIP panels

Each material for construction has a number of advantages and disadvantages. However, building a house from sip panels reviews will be a reasonable decision for everyone. And there is no need to be surprised. After all, such a building material has the following advantages.

  1. Such material has good thermal insulation. "Canadian" houses in winter retain heat well and save money on space heating.
  2. Building material of this type provides any dwelling with excellent sound insulation. Indeed, SIP panels of small thickness do not allow noise and sounds to penetrate into living rooms.
  3. SIP panels are lightweight. The weight of one such panel can be from 15-20 kilograms. Therefore, for a “Canadian” house, it will not be necessary to build a powerful and expensive foundation. For such material, a shallow strip foundation will suffice.
  4. The shortest construction time. So, a structure or a house can be built from SIP panels even within a month.
  5. The construction of buildings from SIP panels due to their special design can be carried out at absolutely any time of the year. In this case, there are no restrictions.
  6. SIPs help save money on their transportation and transportation. And all this thanks to their low weight.
  7. SIP - panels are not afraid of external influences. In addition, they are resistant to mold and mildew.
  8. Such a building material has an affordable price. Therefore, this item can also be attributed to the advantages of SIP panels.
  9. SIP panels are easy to install. Therefore, their installation will require the panels themselves, screws and some knowledge.
  10. SIP panels do not emit harmful and allergic substances into the air. Therefore, this building material can be considered an environmentally friendly material for building houses.
  11. It is a durable building material. Therefore, they perfectly withstand absolutely any load.

Disadvantages of SIP - panels.

As you can see, this building material has an impressive number of advantages. Therefore, sip panel house building companies use this material to build houses of absolutely any size. However, despite this, all types of sip panels have certain disadvantages.

So, SIP - panels have the following disadvantages.

  • Such material is flammable. Indeed, during a fire, houses made of SIP panels burn out completely and very quickly.
  • This type of building material is devoid of a good environmental indicator. In some cases, SIPs release harmful substances into the air that can be dangerous to its inhabitants.
  • SIP panels, unfortunately, are not resistant to rodents. Therefore, mice can spoil this material.

Almost all people are concerned about the shortcomings of this building material. First of all, people are concerned about the fire resistance of SIP. It is worth noting that you do not need to worry much. Indeed, in production, each SIP - panel is treated with a special compound that increases the fire resistance of this material.

A few words need to be said about the environmental friendliness of the material. Of course, some adhesive components release harmful substances into the atmosphere in a small amount. But they are not capable of harming a person and his health.

Now is the time to address the problem of rodents, which can harm almost any building material. Mice, rats and other rodents get into the house in different ways. But some people believe that SIP panels are considered the ideal environment for these animals to enter. It should be noted that this opinion is erroneous. After all, the insulation is closed on both sides with OSB boards. Shavings that are impregnated with resin are a serious obstacle for rodents. And the insulation itself is not of interest to such animals due to the fact that it is inedible.

Varieties of insulation SIP panels

As a heater and sealant can be used:

  • mineral wool,
  • styrofoam,
  • fiberglass,
  • polyurethane foam,

Styrofoam

However, of these materials, the most popular material is considered to be polystyrene foam.

As for other materials for insulation, they also have their pros and cons.

Mineral wool

For example, mineral wool provides a room with good heat and sound insulation.

The disadvantages of this insulation include discomfort that may appear on the skin after inaccurate use of mineral wool.

polyurethane foam

The next polyurethane foam insulation is suitable for construction in areas with a humid climate.

Fiberglass

But fiberglass is used as a heater very rarely. And this is facilitated by one drawback, when this material begins to deform under the influence of a temperature of +40.

This is a combined building material that combines a reliable frame and insulation. The scope of its use is very wide in private and commercial construction. When using this material, the construction of a building takes relatively little time.

SIP is a structural insulation panel. For its production, OSB and heat-insulating material are used. In order to connect the three layers, a special type of polyurethane adhesive is used. As a heat-insulating material - expanded polystyrene. Unlike ordinary foam, it is not combustible. When exposed to high temperatures does not emit toxic substances. To give additional rigidity, a wooden block is placed inside the SIP panel.

SIP panels are ideal for construction in any climatic conditions. With the help of SIP elements, the construction of a house is carried out in a very short time. The material is also lightweight. High rates of thermal insulation are not inferior to brickwork.

  1. High level of thermal insulation. In comparison, a panel with a thickness of 174 mm is able to replace 2.5 meters of brickwork.
  2. Expanded polystyrene does not let extraneous sounds and noise into the room.
  3. Light weight material. On average, 1 m2 weighs only 15-20 kg. This makes it possible to use a simple foundation and not spend a lot of money for its arrangement.
  4. It will take only a few weeks to build a house of 50 square meters.
  5. There are no weather restrictions for construction.
  6. Environmental Safety. The panels do not emit any toxic substances, there is no smell.
  7. Installation can be done by hand, you do not need to have special equipment.

Types of filler

With the advent of new materials and technologies, SIP panels can also change to some extent. For private construction, one variety is used, and for industrial construction, it is necessary to choose another option. Also for comparison, different options are used for load-bearing walls, floors, roofs and finishes. The choice must be made before construction begins. Neither the smell nor other negative aspects will disappoint the buyer even after a long time of operation of a house built according to the “Canadian” technology.

Today, SIP panels can be divided into types depending on the filler used:

  1. SIP with PPU (polyurethane foam). This option is most often used for industrial construction. The choice is justified by lightness and very high strength. This material is practically non-flammable. Not exposed to fungi and mold. When choosing the right size, SIP panels of this type can be used in regions with a high level of air humidity.
  2. SIP with mineral wool. They do not emit odor and are non-toxic. The advantage of such a heat-insulating material can be called incombustibility. These varieties are used in private construction. The dimensions of the elements can be different, it is worth choosing the most suitable for building a house. The most commonly used material is 174 mm thick.
  3. Panels with expanded polystyrene also do not emit odor, like mineral wool. That is why they can be used for the construction of a private house and an industrial facility.

Type of outer element

Initially, the outer layers of the SIP panel were plywood, which was glued to the insulation using a special glue. Prices and sizes for such building material may vary depending on the filler. The external material will also affect the cost.

As an external element can be used:

  • drywall - such panels are intended only for interior work;
  • galvanized steel - a sandwich panel of this type is used for the construction of industrial facilities;
  • plastisol makes it possible to use elements in various areas of construction, it does not emit odor even during operation;
  • hardboard - used for the construction of a private house.

Each option has different prices. Buildings from them allow you to live and work for a long time. The material does not emit odor even when exposed to high temperatures.

Building material dimensions

SIP panels can be of different thicknesses, the most popular is 174 mm. Prices will depend on the overall dimensions, and not just on the thickness.

For the construction of external walls, it is necessary to choose an element measuring 1250 by 2500 by 174 mm. The surface area is 3.125 square meters. Panels measuring 625 by 2500 by 174 mm are most often used as interfloor ceilings or for roofing.

Thickness 174 mm consists of a thickness of insulation 150 mm and 2 sheets of external trim 12 mm each. The choice of insulation thickness will depend directly on climatic conditions and personal preferences. Prices must be specified in advance, this will allow for more accurate calculations of the cost of construction.

Houses made of such a building material are distinguished by reliability and durability, and can be freely compared with other structures. Excellent building characteristics, no smell, environmentally friendly raw materials - all this creates the opportunity to create excellent living conditions.

Canadian house building technology based on SIP panels, which are assembled in any type of premises (house, garage, etc.). Each panel consists of 2 materials: upper and lower (facing) plates made of OSB, DSP or green board and polystyrene glued between them. Thanks to this, the design becomes extremely energy efficient, and the cost of building a house is significantly reduced.

SIP panels Green Board - Russia

Green Board is a very durable, fire-resistant and rot-resistant material. The composition of the Green Board board consists of wood wool (60%) and Portland cement (40%) with the addition of a natural mineralizer - a low concentration sodium silicate solution.

SIP panels

Just like lumber, SIP panels are a fundamental building material. And if low-quality material is chosen for the construction of the building, then the result will be appropriate. It is also noteworthy that even a small variation in prices from different companies can mean a big difference in quality.

Let's discuss some features of the material.

industrial production

For SIP panels, not only the material is important, but also the production technology. Panels can be prefabricated or glued in the field. There is even no need to explain that handicraft production will never compare in quality with factory production, but not every customer can distinguish one type of material from another.

In industrial production, not only modern equipment is involved in the creation of SIP panels, but also technology developed in accordance with GOST, TU and other regulations. Therefore, the easiest way to identify counterfeit is the question of certificates. If the seller cannot show them, then, most likely, he sells "left" products. It is important to pay attention to the fact that the seller may have papers for the components of SIP panels, for example, OSB-3 or expanded polystyrene, so you need to ask for a certificate of the panel itself. Acquiring material without a certificate means installing a partition, the strength of which has never been tested by anyone.

OSB is a board with flat chips with a special orientation relative to each other. This material is obtained as a result of careful processing of wood, carried out in the form of pressing chips under high pressure and exposure to elevated temperatures. Adhesive waterproof resin is also used to form the plates. OSB was the first wood-based board designed specifically for building construction, but today it is used everywhere, especially often in the manufacture of furniture. In this industry, the board is already replacing plywood and chipboard, because it has many advantages over these materials.

High strength and other useful characteristics of OSB are the result of a special technology for laying chips when forming a plate - chips of approximately 140x0.6 mm form three layers. The outer layer is laid on both sides with chips with a parallel orientation relative to the long side of the slab. The layer inside them is perpendicular. The special laying of the slab makes it very bending-resistant and resilient. OSB board can be called "advanced wood", because, in fact, it is the same material, but more intelligently arranged for greater strength. Also, the slab will not have flaws characteristic of wood - knots, fibers directed in different directions, and other things.

After pressing, the slab is treated on both sides with special agents that give this material water and fire resistance. Thanks to this treatment, OSBs become weather resistant, sawn well and cut with any tool.

OSB boards are also distinguished by the fact that they can hold fasteners much more reliably. This feature is again a consequence of the special stacking of chips during the formation of the slab. The entire load coming from the fasteners is received not by one section of the slab, but by the whole of it due to the fact that the network of chips evenly distributes the weight over all segments. It turns out that OSB holds fasteners "all", and not some separate section of it. Fasteners are held by many small chips, which are a plane perpendicular to the screw or bracket.

For the production of OSB, pine is usually chosen. The share of wood in the board is up to 95%, which makes the material very environmentally friendly, and among wood-based boards it has no competitors in this parameter. It is also worth noting that the production of OSB also does not emit harmful substances into the atmosphere. A small percentage of binder material makes it possible to achieve environmental friendliness and lightness of the board, as well as high values of noise and heat conductivity, ease of processing and beautiful appearance.

To date, there are three subspecies of OSB boards:

  • OSB-1 - a variety used in low humidity, for example, in the furniture industry;
  • OSB-2 - has increased strength, therefore it can be used to create load-bearing structures, but only in dry rooms;
  • OSB-3 is the most durable variety that can withstand heavy loads and harsh operating conditions, including high humidity.

As you might guess, it is the third type of slabs that is used to build houses.

Application

OSB-3 boards are a building material that is used in a humid environment indoors or in external cladding. The plate can be used for roofing, floors, walls, battens, stairs and so on - the choice is very large.

Features of OSB boards
  • increased strength;
  • high elasticity;
  • low percentage of expansion due to moisture ingress;
  • excellent appearance;
  • the possibility of quick installation;
  • light weight;
  • the possibility of waste-free use;
  • parameter stability;
  • stiffening of load-bearing structures.
Scope of plates
  • roof
  • wall cladding (internal or external);
  • temporary floors
  • overlaps;
  • sandwich panels
  • structural elements.

Advantages of OSB

OSB has a lot in common with particleboard in terms of its properties, however, builders and furniture manufacturers note the best quality of this material, and prefer it to chipboard or MDF. This type of wood combines the characteristics of wood and the ease of installation of block materials. For example, OSB is valued for its high strength, but also for the fact that the boards look almost the same as wood, although they are not wood in the usual sense of the word.

OSB boards fully comply with the most stringent requirements that apply to wood. However, at the same time, OSB does not have the disadvantages inherent in an ordinary tree, for example, it does not undergo delamination, almost does not absorb water, does not “warp” over time, and has no knots. If we compare OSB and chipboard, then the new material will be a cut above. For example, OSB board withstands the influence of precipitation much better, has increased strength and many more advantages.

If we compare OSB with other materials like OSB, lumber and plywood, then the advantages of boards will be as follows:

  • the properties of the plate are uniform over the entire area and do not depend on humidity and other factors;
  • increased moisture resistance. When in water, the material swells by 17–25%, but it is not damaged and retains its strength;
  • ease of processing makes it easy to cut the material, drill, glue different parts and so on;
  • excellent fastening retention;
  • ease, allowing you to abandon the "serious" foundation, special equipment for lifting plates, a large team of builders and other things, which will significantly affect the cost of construction;
  • environmental safety class E1 - permitted for use in residential premises;
  • the possibility of building on their own - knowing the basics of building "American" houses, anyone can independently build a building from OSB. This makes the construction of this material very cheap and simple, so the customer himself can engage in low-rise construction without involving a team of professionals;
  • the possibility of creating plates adapted to special operating conditions. For example, with increased strength or resistance to moisture;
  • assembly and production of plates are almost completely automated, which eliminates the human factor and further reduces the cost of the material;
  • low cost - despite the huge list of advantages, OSB cost less than natural wood or plywood.

Styrofoam

A lot of attention is paid to the appearance of SIP panels, that is, their skin, while few people think about the insides. And in vain, because durability, thermal insulation, and the cost of the panel depend on them.

Cheap Styrofoam is created from waste and recycled garbage. Because of this, the material is heterogeneous and vulnerable to mechanical stress. It crumbles easily.

Also on the modern market, you can often find SIP panels made of expanded polystyrene of the PSB-S15 brand, which is of low quality, but almost twice as cheap as normal material. Accordingly, if PSB-S15 polystyrene foam is used, then the SIP panel will turn out to be many times more fragile than with proper manufacture.

By purchasing SIP panels of inadequate quality, the construction customer can save only a few percent of the budget, but at the same time reducing the strength of his house at times. The problem becomes especially obvious if the defective panels are used for the roof or load-bearing walls - the low rigidity of the material appears instantly.

The best material in its class for SIP panels is facade PSB. You can recognize it by marking the letter "F" in the name. This is a very high quality material, specially created for facade work. It differs from other types of expanded polystyrene in that it has much stronger bonds between the granules, increased rigidity and the ability to maintain shape under pressure. Such material is created by reusable conditioning of blocks before the cutting stage. To create PSB-S25F, recycled materials are not used. All this affects the cost, and the price is quite high.

It is important to note that in 2015 a new GOST No. 15588-2014 was developed for this material. According to it, the material PSB-S-25F is equivalent to PPS16F. PSB-15 is being replaced by four new types of PPP with coefficients of 10, 12, 13 and 14.

factory processing

In the Leader house kit, SIP panels are delivered to the construction site in a form already cut according to the project. All production waste is disposed of directly at the factory.

Cutting at the factory costs more for the customer than sawing it on the site "by eye", however, every ruble spent will be invested in the strength, durability and quality of the house being built.

SIP panels are fast, reliable and environmentally friendly construction of houses for centuries! All our materials
