Polymer plaster for the bathroom. Moisture-resistant plaster: plaster for the bathroom - we make a choice. Compositions for decorative finishing

This article will discuss the possibility of using various types of plasters for finishing the surfaces of the bathroom and other wet areas. Our main task is to choose an adequate option for use in difficult conditions.

Leveling and decorating the base

Despite innovations in the construction industry, not all apartment owners in new buildings can boast of even walls. And when their curvature is especially annoying in the bathroom, it is worth sacrificing a few square centimeters of space to give the room a decent look.

This can be done using special moisture resistant drywall sheetsmounted on a frame or planted on glue. And it is better to go the way of plastering the surface - so you can make more efficient use of the already small area of \u200b\u200bthe bathroom.

In general, the use of plaster for wet rooms can solve two global problems:

  1. preparation of the base for subsequent finishing work. This can be tiling or some other piece materials, painting, applying decorative plaster, etc.;
  2. giving the base a finished look with the help of thin-layer decorative compositions. And if in the first case the choice is small, then in terms of design, the number of options is almost incalculable. But more on that later.

Alignment of walls (or ceiling) is carried out using solutions based on binders such as cement or gypsum. Usually they prefer ready-made dry mixes with verified proportions of the components, but this does not prevent you from kneading the solution yourself.

We will talk about the advisability of using gypsum plaster below, but for now we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the approximate prices for dry mixes.

(*) Given the incomprehensible situation with the exchange rate of the Russian ruble and the abrupt change in prices for dry mixes, the table provides an estimated cost solely for comparing compositions on the “more expensive-cheaper” principle.

We did not give as examples the entire range of Ceresit and Knauf plasters. You can get acquainted with them in separate articles. The same applies to decorative plasters. Basically, you can use any Venetian plaster. Just do not forget to use a protective compound as a finishing layer. For example, wax for plaster Optimist. At a price of 500-800 rubles. per kg, the package is enough to treat a surface of 10-15 square meters. m.

What solution to use for leveling

This question is ambiguous - it all depends on the specific situation. For example, gypsum coatings are very afraid of operating conditions with high humidity. The direct impact of water is like death for them. The solution suggests itself to isolate the leveled plane from the external environment. This can be done using a coating type waterproofing composition. It would seem that the problem is solved. But even in this situation there is a risk.

Suppose you plastered the walls and ceiling along the lighthouses, protected them from damp air with waterproof mortars, and glued the tiles. And after some time, the neighbors from above accidentally forgot to turn off the tap or knocked over a bucket of water on the floor, which will surely have time to seep to you. Moisture in this case will come into contact with the plaster from the unprotected side. This will cause it to swell and reduce adhesion. In the worst situation, tiles can fall off the walls.

But there are mixtures that are labeled as "moisture-resistant plaster." They are also gypsum, but due to their composition they make it possible to obtain a surface for which exposure to moist air is not terrible.

The video below discusses situations when gypsum plaster can be used, and when it is better to use cement compositions for finishing bathrooms. Well, in general, it is shown to what state it is better to refine the base for the subsequent gluing of tiles.

Why do so many finishers use gypsum plaster when leveling bathroom walls? Everything is explained by the fact that this composition is the easiest to work with. In fact, "for themselves" these people work with cement mortar - it's more reliable.

And for good reason: it is the cement mortar that is considered the most successful solution for the bathroom. It has good adhesion to stone substrates, water resistance, durability. Below is a video on how to carry out plaster work in the bathroom. We are talking about leveling the base for the subsequent gluing of tiles. The video demonstrates the approach to the installation of beacons and the use of an adhesive layer for better adhesion of cement-based plaster.

In most cases, you can get by with the usual dry plaster mix M150. It is produced by many manufacturers, and it is quite capable of coping with the task of leveling the base in the bathroom and other wet areas. Advantages: low cost, availability, ease of use and high quality of the finished surface. Disadvantages: high consumption (per 1 sq. m. 18-20 kg with a layer 10 mm thick), it is necessary to withstand a significant pause in order to achieve the desired properties of the coating.

Often, lighthouses are fixed with gypsum plaster, using cement plaster to form a leveling layer. After it has set, it is imperative to remove the beacons and clean the wall from traces of gypsum mortar.

If you are going to lay tiles for the first time, but you are dealing with an uneven base, do not rely on the possibility of adjusting the plane due to the adhesive solution. Better work on the wall with plaster. A perfectly flat wall is much easier to veneer!

You can experiment with a solution, the components for which are cement and liquid glass. It sets quickly and gains strength just as quickly, but it allows you to get a really high-quality waterproof coating.

Regardless of the degree of water resistance of the finished plastered surface, it should be additionally treated with a deep penetration primer or suitable waterproofing compounds, for example, the same Aquastop, etc.

We must not forget that high humidity carries not only the threat of destruction of the finish, but also the development of microorganisms, mold, etc. Therefore, it will not be superfluous to apply a fungicidal primer, both on a non-plastered base, and after leveling the walls with a mortar.

From the "Don't Do It" section. When plastering an old bathroom, it is imperative to remove a layer of paint - completely, otherwise the plaster will “thump” and fall off along with the tiles glued to it. If you are mixing the cement-sand mixture yourself, then do not spare the cement. Due to its lack, the coating may turn out to be too brittle.

Decorative plaster in the bathroom

You can use any ready-made solutions. An important role is given to the application of a protective layer, which will serve as a barrier to moist air. And despite the fact that the installation “In the bathroom - only tiles!” Is still entrenched in our minds, more and more people are discovering the endless possibilities of decorative plaster.

Video for those who doubt the advisability of using decorative plaster when finishing such premises as a shower or bathroom. In fact, today there are compositions that, in terms of their waterproof properties, are almost as good as tiles. And if you take into account the integrity of the canvas and the design possibilities that open up, then it becomes not so easy to make the final decision on the choice of material.

Experts recommend paying particular attention to the decoration of rooms with high humidity: do not use materials that are not able to withstand the aggressive effects of temperature and moisture changes. For example, it is not recommended to use wallpaper or gypsum putty in the bathroom - very soon the room will need repairs again.

But polymer and cement plasters are resistant to such influences. Modern high-tech materials for wall decoration, which include moisture-resistant plaster for the bathroom, make it possible to use it in rooms with a high level of humidity along with traditional materials - tiles, panels, paint.

Moisture resistant plaster: types, application

Today, domestic and foreign manufacturers of finishing materials offer a fairly wide range of waterproof mixtures. We suggest that you familiarize yourself with the most common options and the possibilities for their use in a humid environment.

Depending on the substances included in the moisture-resistant plaster for the bathroom, there are:

  • silicate;
  • mineral;
  • acrylic;
  • silicone.

It is important to choose the right type of this material so that the work done does not disappoint you.

mineral plaster

Mineral plaster in its composition contains lime and cement. To give texture, marble, carefully crushed, is additionally added to it. The larger the pieces of marble, the deeper the relief of the plastered surface. This is a waterproof plaster for the bathroom. Its protective properties are explained by the fact that its composition includes hydro-resistant components.

It is convenient to take care of such a surface - most of the contaminants are easily washed off with water. The mineral finish has excellent water and vapor permeability. Thanks to this, the walls "breathe". In addition, this material is resistant to mechanical stress and has a long service life. Almost all varieties of this material are made in light colors. When choosing this moisture-resistant plaster for the bathroom, one should take into account its small drawbacks - low elasticity and intolerance to vibrations.

Polymer plaster

Acrylic (polymer) plaster is a mixture made on a water basis. It is already ready for use. It consists of ash elements and synthetic resins, crushed marble and glass. These compounds are tintable, so there are usually no problems with choosing a color scheme.

Such moisture-resistant decorative plaster for the bathroom has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of such compositions include resistance to moisture, but at the same time, like any polymer, it does not let steam through at all, therefore its use in rooms with poor ventilation is not recommended. Another indisputable advantage of such a coating is its long service life - such plaster will last you up to fifty years.

The best acrylic plasters

Cement-polymer mixture that has waterproofing. Shows good results when applied under ceramic tiles.

Consolit 540

Waterproofing plaster, which is a multi-component composition based on a polymer-cement mixture.

Dufa Kratzputz aussen

Acrylic plaster. It is used as a moisture-resistant plaster for the bathroom with a decorative effect. It has an original texture - "orange peel".

Stuc Granito, Stuc Deco

Moisture-resistant mixtures containing a polymer as a binder. They have excellent decorative properties.

silicone plaster

The composition of this plaster includes silicone resins. For those who want to make repairs in the bathroom for a long time, we recommend that you pay attention to these compositions. The durability of silicone plaster is more than sixty years.

The bathroom is good because it repels water from the surface, and is also easy to clean. On such surfaces, a fungus or mold never starts. Moisture-resistant silicone-based plaster tolerates ultraviolet radiation well.

Silicate decorative plaster

This finishing material is based on potash glass, which is sometimes called liquid glass. Surfaces covered with silicate plaster perfectly repel water, they protect the walls from the appearance of mold and fungus. In addition, this material has a high vapor permeability. This moisture-resistant bathroom plaster is also attractive with a huge selection of colors - there are more than 250 shades.

The disadvantages of this material, buyers include a rather high price (from 3.5 to 5 thousand rubles per 25 kg).

Gypsum compositions

Expert opinions differ about this material: some believe that it is not very suitable for finishing a bathroom, others argue that moisture-resistant gypsum plaster for a bathroom is good, but subject to good ventilation in the room. The fact is, gypsum has one drawback - it actively absorbs moisture. Despite this, gypsum plaster is quite often used to finish the bathroom, especially the ceiling.

Buyers are attracted by the whiteness of this material, which greatly facilitates painting, ease of application and surface leveling and quick drying. In order to eliminate the main drawback, additives (for example, PVA glue) are used in the preparation of the composition and the coating of the plaster layer with a special water-repellent primer. The applied layer should be no more than 25 mm.

The application of moisture-resistant (gypsum-based) is justified in the case of using compositions from well-known manufacturers. They produce mixtures with the addition of special ingredients. For example, moisture-resistant plaster for the bathroom ("Knauf") Rotband, based on gypsum, is designed specifically for rooms where humidity is very high. You can also note the ready-made moisture-resistant composition "UNIS Teplon".

Moisture-resistant plaster for the bathroom should be chosen, taking into account what the finish coat will be. Quite often, in rooms, the walls are lined with ceramic tiles. In this case, the requirement for the strength of the material under constant exposure to moisture and the ideal alignment of the walls comes first. The color of the plaster and the appearance of minor cracks do not play a significant role, since it is masked by tiles. Therefore, the use of cement-polymer and cement mixtures is justified.

A different approach is required when preparing walls for painting. With the help of paint it will not be possible to hide even the smallest defects, rather, they will appear more. Any slightest cracking is unacceptable. These requirements are fully met by gypsum plaster.

In recent years, more and more preference is given to moisture-resistant plaster for the bathroom, which does not require additional coating. This issue can be solved with the help of decorative plaster, which is also produced in a waterproof version. The decorating effect can be achieved in different ways: three-dimensional texture, different colors, imitation of natural materials.

It is not recommended to apply a layer with deep furrows (for example, the so-called bark beetle plaster), since microorganisms can multiply in them. Of the finished compositions, moisture-resistant plaster for the Knauf bathroom has proven itself perfectly (their price ranges from 350 to 730 rubles per 25 kg).

The combination of areas with decorative plaster and tiled cladding looks very original. When creating an unusual interior, Venetian plaster is often used today. To increase the reliability of such coatings, it is recommended to cover them with a protective layer. The most common are wax formulations, for example, "Optimist".

Experts recommend in rooms with high humidity to play it safe and use additional protection against the effects of moisture. This is achieved by applying a very thin primer layer from the Aquastop composition.

It is necessary to carefully choose a moisture-resistant decorative plaster for the bathroom. Price is sometimes crucial, but saving on these formulations is not worth it, since inexpensive mixtures from unknown manufacturers do not always guarantee high quality.

Wall preparation

Before applying moisture resistant plaster, it is necessary to prepare the walls. First remove the old coating. Paint, for example, is convenient to burn out with a blowtorch. You can go the other way - cover the surface with a special strengthening compound. Be sure to check the walls for strength. If the technical plaster is not holding well somewhere (and you will hear this by a dull sound when tapping), then it must be removed.

Large chips or potholes are sealed with new mortar. Preparing the walls in the bathroom before applying the plaster involves a certain surface roughness, in contrast to the preparation before other types of finishes, when they achieve the perfect smoothness of the wall. If the surface turned out to be too smooth, then it is necessary to make notches on it - they will provide good adhesion to the decorative composition.

Before starting work with plaster, the wall is treated with a degreasing compound and rubbed a little with a metal brush to get rid of dust.

Applying plaster

Wall decoration with moisture-resistant plaster involves the sequential application of three layers: base, rough and finish (protective). The base layer of finishers is called splatter. First, the surface of the wall is abundantly moistened with water. Then, until the moisture is absorbed, a thick solution is collected with a small ladle and thrown onto the wall. The thickness of this layer should not exceed 0.5 cm. It can reach 1 cm if the surface is wooden.

The spray is done so that the entire wall is covered with the solution. At the same time, do not level the mixture - it should solidify in its original form.

When the first layer dries, you can take on the rough layer. It needs to be leveled. For this fit spatula and trowel. First, a small amount of plaster is thrown onto the surface, just as in the first layer. Then the composition is leveled. After that, it is necessary to smooth the surface with a wooden trowel, periodically wetting it with water. The movements must be circular. Check the surface with a level.

And finally, it remains to apply the final layer. It is started after the previous one has dried. The wall is again abundantly moistened with water. Moisture-resistant putty is applied with a trowel, after which it is rubbed with a trowel to a flat surface. When working with a trowel, experienced plasterers recommend keeping it at an angle of 20 °. This will facilitate the process, and the material will lie more evenly. If you want to apply a decorative pattern, this is done immediately, before the mortar has hardened.

We examined the features of applying plaster on. If you do everything right, you will get a beautiful and durable surface. The main thing is to choose the right material and knead the dry composition strictly according to the instructions that are indicated on each package.

High humidity in the room is a factor that places high demands on the way it is finished. For these purposes, tiles are often used. An alternative to it is moisture-resistant plaster for the bathroom. It has a whole range of advantages. With its help, you can not only level the walls and ceilings, but also decorate the room. Decorative trim will give the room an original, unique look. In this way, bold design solutions for interior design are brought to life, a vivid example of which is presented in the following photo.

Varieties of moisture-resistant plaster by purpose and composition

Plaster for wet rooms differs from conventional compositions in the presence of a number of additives that give it water-repellent properties. Such mixtures differ both in their purpose and composition. Their important feature is increased plasticity, which allows you to get even corners and smooth coatings, almost immediately ready for painting. According to the first sign, the following types of plaster are distinguished:

  • leveling compounds;
  • decorative compositions.

The former are used only to obtain smooth surfaces for rough wall finishing. They prepare work areas for applying tiles, paint (moisture resistant) and other decorative means.

For leveling, cement-sand and gypsum materials with various additives are most often used.

Decorative plaster mixtures are a finishing finishing material applied in a thin layer. In this case, the surface of the base must be pre-levelled.

The classification of the material by composition is given in the following table.

Separation of moisture-resistant plaster compositions by incoming components

Types of mixtures for plasteringComposition, characteristics
1 mineralare made on a cement-sand base containing water-repellent fillers
2 silicatetheir basic constituent substance is liquid glass (potassium)
3 siliconehave high plasticity, making it convenient to work with such material
4 acrylicthe main component is an acrylic polymer, to which dyes, crushed marble and glass, ash are added

The plaster is produced in a ready-to-use (diluted to the desired consistency) state, or in a dry form that requires dilution with water, respectively, with the help of the first variety, finishing work is performed faster.

Material characteristic

Water-resistant bathroom plaster has a whole range of positive properties. They push it to a leading position (in terms of application) among other materials for finishing rooms with high humidity. The advantages of the material are as follows:

  • it contains environmentally friendly components;
  • the resulting plaster layer adheres strongly to the base, which contributes to its strength and long service life;
  • such a coating does not absorb water, but passes its vapor through itself, therefore moisture condenses slightly on glossy surfaces and bathroom mirrors decorated with moisture-resistant plaster;
  • microorganisms (fungi and mold) do not spread on it;
  • the material applied to the wall or ceiling smooths out their irregularities and defects;
  • decorative mixtures allow you to create a variety of relief patterns, decorating the room, combining with other finishing materials, for example, as in the picture;

Bathroom design
  • a large selection of colors and shades allows you to do without the use of paint;
  • when creating a decor, the solution is used sparingly;
  • simple maintenance of the final coating;
  • quick drying of the applied layer reduces the time of work;
  • the use of compounds on concrete, plasterboard, brick, foam concrete surfaces does not require their special preparation, it is enough to perform only their priming;
  • salt stains do not occur on the finished finished surface;
  • the material does not crack over time, does not shrink, is resistant to temperature changes.

The main competitive advantages of waterproof putties are their versatility, ease of use and cost-effectiveness.

Leveling compounds

Mixtures for leveling surfaces prepare the base for further decoration. They must have good adhesive properties, serve as a reliable, solid base.

Often the work will be done with cement or gypsum plaster containing additives. At the same time, dry materials are diluted with water in a certain proportion to the desired level of plasticity.

It should be borne in mind that gypsum plaster is weaker in strength than cement plaster. It must be handled with care to avoid damage. By itself, it is not resistant to moisture, so it is applied to walls previously covered with a waterproof composition and protected from water from the outside with the help of ceramics, glass and plastic.

Now the following brands of leveling material are common:

  • profit barrier;
  • knauf xn;
  • ceresit cr 65;
  • profit hydrophobic;
  • vetonite tt;
  • console 540;
  • unis Teplon.

They differ in price and quality. Available in bags, as in the photo.

The choice of a particular brand is associated both with personal financial capabilities and with the compliance of its characteristics with the conditions of use.

Materials for decorative finishing

Moisture-resistant decorative plaster for the bathroom is selected based on the effect that you want to achieve. It is recommended to avoid gypsum compositions, use cement or polymer mixtures. The packages must necessarily contain a mark on the level of moisture resistance of the finishing material.

On the modern market, moisture-resistant compositions that allow you to create a decorative design for rooms are presented. You can easily find the right product. For example, STUC DECO and GRANITO polymeric materials give surfaces different textures, and DUFA KRATZPUTZ will help create an orange peel.

Venetian plaster is widely used in the decoration of bathtubs, which is covered with a special wax protective layer. Its application requires experience in this kind of work.

Decorative compositions allow you to get a seamless coating without seams, which is not inferior in its characteristics to tiles. With their help, create an interior of a unique look, similar to that shown in the photo.

Decorative plasters are much more expensive than leveling ones. But thanks to applying them in a thin layer, 20 kg of packaging is enough to process up to 30 square meters. m. working surface.

Technology of work with moisture resistant plaster

The process of applying decorative moisture-resistant plaster begins after the formation of the leveling layer. It turns out that the complete decoration of the bathroom presupposes the consistent use of 2 types of mixtures. Step by step activities are carried out as follows:

  • prepare the base by removing old finishing materials from its surface: plaster, tiles and paint;
  • form a leveling layer resistant to water;
  • a decorative moisture-resistant layer is applied, which gives the coating not only a stylish design, but also increases the resistance of the finish to the negative influences present.

The process of plastering itself is as follows:

  • after mechanical cleaning, existing salt and oil stains are removed from the working surface with special means;
  • if a brick wall is being plastered, then the seams between its elements are further deepened to improve adhesion;
  • when working on concrete surfaces, a notch is applied, which increases the degree of adhesion of the solution to the base;
  • the prepared wall (ceiling) is primed, and if the base is porous, then the process is repeated up to 3 times;
  • expect complete drying, indicated in the instructions for the composition used;
  • leveling is carried out, and if the irregularities are significant, beacons are preliminarily set according to the level, which are dismantled after the solution dries;
  • the desired design is already applied to the completely dried first layer: tiles, decorative plaster, or left for painting.

When imitating the design of surfaces for different materials and in different styles, the decor overlay technique is different. To obtain a certain relief and patterns, it is necessary to use special tools.

The photo shows the formation of decorative elements under the "leaves".

With the help of the simplest actions, you can significantly improve the quality of the resulting coverage. Additional work does not take much time. They are performed during the plastering process.

In the video below, you can see the process of applying a decorative coating in the style of a sea wave.

Waterproof plaster is not a panacea for all problems that cause water with detergents to get on the walls and arising from high humidity. But compliance with the correct technology of work, the choice of a suitable composition, taking into account the nuances of its application - get rid of most of them. To obtain a durable, beautiful coating, you should carefully approach the choice of finishing material, and when working with it, do not deviate from the instructions indicated on the package. It is available to everyone to choose waterproof compositions for their conditions and possibilities.

Specialization: Capital construction works (laying the foundation, erecting walls, constructing the roof, etc.). Internal construction works (laying of internal communications, rough and fine finishing). Hobbies: mobile communication, high technologies, computer equipment, programming.

I had not yet had time to take a break from communicating with Aunt Sonya from Odessa, who had recently chosen wallpaper for the toilet, when she needed a new consultation. She decided to continue the renovation in the sanitary facilities and as a decorative finish she liked the decorative plaster for the bathroom.

And now - she is again at my door with urgent requests to tell her about what material it is better for her to buy and how to use it. I decided to immediately cut off any additional visits by telling her everything I knew about wet room plasters. Just in case, he also mentioned how the walls are plastered under the tiles (suddenly she changes her mind and chooses another option for the tiles).

Having got rid of the annoying visitor, I decided to systematize all the knowledge about how to use plaster in the bathroom on my own. I will present the results of my theoretical research to everyone who likes to do repairs with their own hands. I hope this instruction will help determine which one is better, cheaper, prettier, stronger, and so on.

Types of plaster compositions for bathrooms

I will not annoy you with various lyrical digressions with which our conversation with Aunt Sonya abounded, but I will only talk about those types of plasters that I personally recommend using in plumbing rooms where the air contains a large amount of water vapor.

Sanitizing mixtures

First, I will describe what sanitizing plaster is. This group includes various finishing compositions used to prepare surfaces before their subsequent finishing with decorative materials.

To give the plaster mixture special properties, additives, modifiers and plasticizers are added to the usual cement-based composition during production, which give the solution greater plasticity, but increase the setting time. After surface treatment with rough sanitizing plasters, decorative material can be applied to the walls after at least 7 days.

Ordinary plaster (cement for tiles) without sanitizing properties is not suitable for processing walls in the bathroom, as it does not have waterproofing properties. As a result, the salts contained in moisture act on the surface of the walls (efflorescence appears). Gradually, the under-tile layer is destroyed, microorganisms appear on the damp surface, and the glued tile disappears.

The use of sanitizing plaster mixtures allows you to avoid a large number of troubles:

  1. The plaster isolates subsequent layers from moisture entering through the walls and foundation.(e.g. wallpaper, paint or cladding materials). Therefore, the decorative finish retains its attractive appearance throughout the entire period of operation.
  2. The composition with sanitizing properties acts as an independent waterproofing layer, but is able to remove internal moisture from the room through the building envelope. That is, the plaster is vapor-permeable and contributes to the natural regulation of the level of humidity in the bathroom.
  3. The material forms an elastic layer and does not crack during operation due to possible shrinkage of the walls. Therefore, such plaster can be safely painted or wallpapered on the surface (when using such finishing materials, you need to think in advance about how to finish the plaster leveling).

Sanitizing plaster mixtures are ideal for treating walls that may come into direct contact with water. Therefore, if you decide to make an open shower cabin, tiling its surfaces with tiles, you cannot do without such material.

Decorative plaster in the bathroom fits perfectly on the sanitizing layer. Therefore, I advised Aunt Sonya, since she had not decided on the finish coat, to start work with plastering the surfaces with a sanitizing compound. While it dries (which takes about a week), she will have time to choose and buy finishes.

By the way, it is the long hardening period that determines the dislike of bathroom decorators for this material. I have already mentioned that it takes at least a week to cure the sanitizing plaster. But this is the case if it is applied in a layer of 1 cm.

Gypsum plasters

Many people ask if it is possible to plaster with gypsum plaster in the bathroom. After all, the main binder in this composition does not tolerate operation in humid air.

I will answer you directly. Personally, I have plastered the walls in the bathroom and toilet more than once with Rotband gypsum plaster (for example, Knauf). It is very easy to apply, adheres well to mineral surfaces, does not splatter around the room and makes it very easy to level walls with strong vertical drops.

But I recommend using it only as a starter. That is, for leveling and pre-finishing surfaces. And after the starting Rotband plaster, decorative is already applied - it is very easy to do the finishing with your own hands, since the surface will already be even.

Although some experts prefer to texture Rotband after it is partially dry. In various ways, they create a different relief on the finished surfaces. After painting, the plaster can be considered decorative. Although I do not see any special advantages of this method of finishing and never resort to it.

Another point that interests beginners. They ask if Rotband can be used as a starter finish for tiles (i.e. is gypsum plaster suitable for tiles). Yes, I personally met with this method of facing, but still I advise you to resort to more effective options, since in this case it is necessary to follow a certain technology for preparing the plastered surface.

The disadvantage of gypsum plaster is its price. It is higher, especially when compared with conventional cement-based plasters, but still lower than that of sanitizing compounds. So think about which walls to align and which not.

Facade plaster

In some cases, when carrying out repairs in bathrooms, I used textured waterproof plaster for facades. It has many advantages:

  • high strength - the decorative layer in the bathroom will not be damaged as a result of significant mechanical stress;
  • durability - the service life of the material is quite sufficient for the finish to be preserved until the moment when you want to make a new repair;
  • moisture resistance - the plaster is specially designed for outdoor use, so exposure to steam, drops of water and high temperature in the bathroom will endure without any problems.

When choosing facade plaster for use in the bathroom, give preference only to those options that you are 100% sure are environmentally friendly and safe. The fact is that some materials for finishing facades can release chemical compounds harmful to humans into the air during operation.

Well, as for the minuses, I would single out too rough texture and not so much variety. Moreover, most often facade plaster does not have a smooth surface (like, for example, Venetian), so it is rather difficult to harmoniously fit such a finish into the bathroom design.

Decorative plaster

This finishing option, which was practically not used before due to the lack of necessary materials, is now becoming more and more popular. Moisture-resistant decorative plaster allows you to create beautiful textured surfaces of any shade. At the same time, the material is able to level minor irregularities and wall defects without prior preparation.

In addition, decorative plaster for sanitary facilities has the following advantages:

  1. High vapor permeability. After applying to the walls and drying, the decorative composition does not stop the process of air infiltration through the walls. This contributes to the natural removal of moisture from the bathroom and creates a comfortable microclimate inside.
  2. Antiseptic properties. Fungus, mold and microorganisms harmful to humans do not appear on the surface of the material.

I personally like decorative plaster because after its application (tested on my own experience) in the bathroom after taking a shower, the mirrors do not fog up. The fact is that excess moisture vapor is absorbed into the decorative finish, and does not settle on smooth and cold surfaces.

To reduce the consumption of decorative plaster, I recommend applying it to the walls pre-plastered with starting plaster. Cement-based sanitizers or gypsum Rotband can be used.

Naturally, I advise the first option, and here's why:

  • sanitizing plaster forms a waterproof layer;
  • gives the walls sulfite resistance;
  • helps to quickly adsorb excess water vapor from the air in the bathroom;
  • provide easier application of decorative material;
  • keep the finish from cracking during operation.

I often used Venetian decorative plaster for finishing the walls in the bathroom, which, after hardening, forms a smooth and attractive surface. In addition to the aesthetic function, the Venetian protects the walls from moisture due to the wax layer on the surface.

Stucco of this variety is great for classic English interiors. It can cover not only the walls, but also the ceiling of the room. The finish has a glossy sheen that blends perfectly in the perception of people with water. However, it is still not worth trimming the shower stall with it, since the material is not strong enough for this.

When working with Venetian, it is very important to protect the joints with other surfaces with a moisture-resistant sealant. For example, the point of contact between a plastered wall and ceramic tiles. Or plaster and ceiling. If this treatment is not done, moisture will gradually penetrate under the waterproof wax layer and the finish may be destroyed.

If for some reason you don't like Venetian plaster, you can use textured plaster. In this case, the decorative finish mixture can be applied using one of the methods listed above:

  1. Uniformly rough. The composition should be applied to previously prepared surfaces using a foam sponge, a broom or a newspaper sheet crumpled in a lump, protected from getting wet with a plastic bag. As a result of the impact of such tools, a relief is formed on the walls or ceiling, which outwardly resembles "goosebumps", that is, pimples.

  1. Furrowed-rough. In this case, a special “bark beetle” plaster and a regular grater are used, with which the finishing layer is smoothed. The finishing composition contains special solid elements, which, when exposed to a grater, form horizontally or vertically directed grooves on the surface (depending on how you acted with a grater).

  1. Furrowed. Its essence lies in the formation of a special relief on the surface of the plaster. It is done using a template of the selected shape or a conventional spatula. By pushing through the plaster according to a pre-selected pattern, you can imitate tiling, brickwork, and so on.

Well, in conclusion of the story about bathroom plasters, I will give you some tips that, I think, will not be superfluous:

  1. No matter what they tell you, I do not recommend purchasing gypsum plaster compositions. Yes, there are gypsum-based moisture-resistant plasters on the market that can be used to finish the walls in the bathroom.

But the binder itself, already during operation, can absorb too much liquid and collapse. Therefore, if you already plaster with gypsum, then in the toilet, where the humidity level is still lower.

In the bathroom, put gypsum plaster away from the places where you will have a shower and sink. And take care of very effective ventilation of the room (this will not be superfluous in any case).

  1. I advise you to plaster the walls in the bathroom with cement compounds. But make sure that there is no lime in the composition of the mixtures. It is known to increase the plasticity of the material, but greatly reduces the water-repellent properties.

  1. Buy only waterproof plasters. When choosing a dry mix plaster in the store, make sure that the packaging has the appropriate label. And do not listen to the recommendations of sellers who claim that any bath will do.

If you are going to lay tiles on the plaster, buy a material specially designed for this. Although some manufacturers do not put the appropriate markings on bags of dry mix.

  1. Don't save. No need to buy cheap plaster mixtures to work in bathrooms and. As a rule, modifiers and plasticizers are not used in their production, and all the inscriptions on the bags are just an advertising campaign.

It is better to give preference to products of a well-known brand. For example, Knauf.

  1. Check the dry mix production date. It's listed on the bag. After that, you need to look in the instructions for the expiration date and make sure that it has not yet passed.
    Never buy expired formulations, even if they are given to you at a 90% discount. The plaster binder and modifiers lose their properties over time, so you will not get any benefits.
  2. Buy plaster depending on what material the walls of the toilet are made of. For example, for brickwork, a material with a filler of coarse-grained sand is needed, for wall blocks - from fine sand.

If you choose the wrong one, then it will be more difficult to work, and you will not get high-quality coverage.

Conclusion

Now you know exactly as much about bathroom plasters as I and Aunt Sonya (and the whole of Odessa, since I doubt that she did not share her information with everyone who was in her reach). And if you want to know a little more than a glorious Odessa woman, watch the video in this article, which describes how to plaster walls.

What do you think, do you need moisture-resistant plaster for the bathroom or can you get by with traditional compositions? Have you used decorative plaster for finishing sanitary facilities? I will be glad to see your stories, tips and questions in the comments to the material. None of them will be left without attention.

It is difficult to permanently remove moisture from walls. This will only result in a waste of money and time. Moisture-resistant plaster, like other materials, should be chosen carefully. It is used in the construction and renovation of buildings.

Characteristics of waterproof materials

Moisture resistant plaster can be the best choice for the bathroom. It withstands splashes and even streams of water. It can level the walls and eliminate defects on their surface. This is not an old cement and sand mortar that takes about a month to harden. This is a completely different polymer that can create a protective layer. It has a number of advantages:

  • water resistance;
  • easy application;
  • no shrinkage;
  • dries quickly;
  • short terms of work;
  • resistance to mechanical stress;
  • environmental Safety;
  • plaster does not require high qualification of the master.

Plaster in wet rooms solves 2 tasks:

  1. Prepares the base for finishing work: for tiling and other materials, for painting, for processing with decorative plaster.
  2. Finishing the base with thin layers of various decorative compositions.

Moisture-resistant elastic plaster is able to create even corners, a smooth surface of the walls. The wall can immediately begin to paint or veneer. If the structure intended for plastering is made of a material called cellular concrete, its surfaces must be treated to protect against moisture. Such a coating will protect the base material, will not allow moisture to harm it.

In our country frost-resistant plaster is in demand. This is understandable, since regions with a cold climate are not uncommon in our country. This coating protects the outer surfaces of the walls from freezing and from moisture.

How to choose bathroom finishes

Today, the decorative properties of plaster mortars are quite equal to those of tiles, paint and panels. In the bathroom, they demonstrate their vapor permeability: the walls breathe, mirrors and glass hardly sweat. This provides protection against the appearance of fungus and mold. Decorative elastic plaster with water-repellent properties allows you to create spectacular reliefs, the color of which can be any.

There are universal solutions that combine several properties. They do not allow salts to be deposited on the surface of the walls, they are applied easily. Cracks do not form on the surface treated with plaster. The material does not contain harmful substances.

It is very profitable to buy dry plaster with waterproof properties. The solution prepared in accordance with the instructions saves money and is easy to use. Any person with basic plastering skills can handle it.

To finish the bathroom, you can use the following materials:

  • EC plaster mixture;
  • AZOLIT-VSh;
  • HydroBasic 1K;
  • Hydro Plaster;
  • Profit Barrier;
  • Profit Hydrophobic;
  • Ceresit CR 65;
  • Weber. Vetonit TT;
  • Consolit 540;
  • UNIS SILIN;
  • UNIS Teplon;
  • Dufa Kratzputz aussen;
  • STUS DECO;
  • STUS GRANITO;
  • Founded BIGWELL T-22;
  • Founds BIGWELL T-23;
  • Kesto TF;
  • Stroybrig Tanilit RS21 M;
  • Stroybrig Tanilit RS22 M;
  • Stroybrig Tanilit RS24/1 ML;
  • Stroybrig Tanilit RS 7.5.

In addition to these compositions, there are a number of plaster mixes from Ceresit, Knauf. There are purely decorative compositions, Venetian mixtures of different colors. Under any composition for plaster, it is recommended to apply a layer of wax. Which elastic plaster should be chosen from the many available in the store?

Gypsum elements on the walls can be coated with a gypsum-based composition that is water resistant. Gypsum plaster is easy to work with. But cement mortar is a better solution to the problem. You can get by with a mixture of M150. It is based on cement and is produced by many manufacturers.

You can experiment with a cement-based mortar with the addition of liquid glass. It quickly seizes and gains strength, it turns out an excellent waterproof coating. In no case should bark beetle type coatings be used. It has many grooves, in which mold will certainly appear over time if the plaster is made in the bathroom. Places that will be exposed to moisture must be tiled.

A few words in conclusion

Moisture resistant elastic plaster is widely used in houses and apartments.

Along with it, do-it-yourself silicone plaster applied to walls and other surfaces is popular. These compositions are able to imitate various materials - silk and metal, granite and marble due to inclusions in the composition of the corresponding crumbs. Silicate plaster has many waterproof characteristics, creates a high-quality imitation on the surface of the walls. Techniques for applying plaster for gas silicate blocks differ little from conventional processing. The manufacturer attaches instructions to their products for the use of the mixture.

Some manufacturers produce products that are not only waterproof, they also have thermal protection properties. Decorative elastic wall plaster made of gas silicate blocks gives the effect of silk fabric. On the ceiling and walls of the bathroom, this can look very impressive. Try - everything should work out for you.
