How to glue wallpaper in the corners: options for pasting the inner and outer corner

Wallpaper at the moment is perhaps the most popular finishing material. The reason for such universal love is quite simple. Firstly, the material itself has an affordable, affordable price, and secondly, with a great desire, you can do the work yourself. But if on smooth walls or ceilings this will not be a big deal, then sticking wallpaper in the corners with your own hands can become a serious stumbling block.

It so happened in our life that even experienced, highly professional builders rarely meet perfectly even, in terms of geometry, corners. You can deal with this, but this is the topic of another article, and now we want to tell you how to glue wallpaper in the corners correctly.

Wallpapering in corners

Options for pasting the inner corner

Even in the simplest, most ordinary room, there are at least four such corners.

And in order to subsequently have as few difficulties as possible, it is better to immediately choose the appropriate option for yourself.

  • Let's start with the fact that wallpaper is not a panacea, this finishing material is not intended to hide gross defects. If the corners of your room are already very crooked, then gluing the corners with wallpaper will not save. They must first be leveled, and for this purpose a special plaster composition and the appropriate tool are used.
  • The first and simplest instruction says that the canvas can be glued with an overlap. That is, we glue the strip with an overlap on the adjacent wall of the order of 10 - 15 mm, then another tape is glued end-to-end to the corner. The method is certainly fast, but visually it will not be very beautiful, especially if wallpaper is pasted on non-woven base in the corners, because such canvases are thick.

  • The second method is suitable for slightly littered adjacent walls.. Everything starts almost the same as in the first case. The strip is glued with an overlap on the adjacent wall. The amount of overlap here is made slightly larger than the size of the roughness relative to the vertical plumb.
  • The opposite edge of the next strip should also be oriented along a vertical plumb line, plus it is advisable to draw a line with a pencil that defines a clear border on the opposite side.
  • The next tape should overlap by 20 mm and border on the nearest point on the adjacent wall. After that, it is best to take a long level, attach and press it down in the middle of the overlap. Next, with a wallpaper knife, you need to cut through both strips at once. The upper strip can be removed easily, and the lower one will need to be removed by bending the edge of the wallpaper. After that, the edges are once again smeared with glue and rolled with a special roller at the junction.

Important: no matter how hard you try, the glue will still get on the front of the canvas.
Therefore, before sticking non-woven wallpaper in the corners, as well as any other waterproof wallpaper, prepare warm water and a sponge to thoroughly rinse off the glue.
If there is already a drawing on the canvas, then colorless glue is not terrible for him, but if it is wallpaper for painting, then the dried glue will forever leave a pale spot.

  • There is another way that is common among professionals for even, with poorly drawn corners. We start everything in the same way as in previous cases, we make a few centimeters overlap on the adjacent wall. After that, you should carefully drive the canvas all the way into the very corner. Doing it is convenient. If folds appear, then you can make transverse notches on the edge with scissors.
  • After the tape has settled without wrinkles, you need to take a metal spatula with a length of at least 30 cm and firmly pressing it against the wall on which the main part of the tape is pasted, rest it in a corner. When cutting, the wallpaper knife is held as close as possible to the plane of the spatula.
  • The adjacent strip is glued in the same way.. Those couple of millimeters that will overlap will gradually level out due to the drying of the wallpaper and you will get an almost monolithic joint.

Wrapping the outside corner

In some rooms, there are also enough such turns. For example, it can be window slopes, niches or multi-level plasterboard partitions. How evenly the edge is brought out is very important here, since the outer edge is more noticeable than the inner corner and it is much easier to damage it.

Therefore, if there are chips and irregularities, it is better to eliminate them immediately.

  • The rules for wallpapering in the corners on the outside are closer to the second method, which we have already described above.. We start by making a small overlap on the adjacent wall, up to a maximum of 5 cm. With an uneven wall, a large overlap will be difficult to level.
  • After that, you need to carefully align our tolerance, if folds still form, make transverse notches on the canvas. Next, we draw an even vertical strip along a plumb line or level, which will indicate the far border of the adjacent tape and glue the adjacent tape end-to-end to the corner.
  • After that, we apply and press the middle of the overlap with a metal ruler, spatula or a long level and cut off both strips in the middle of the lining. We remove the excess of both canvases, glue and roll.
The joint itself will turn out a few millimeters away from the outer corner, but this is normal, if you make a joint on the edge of the corner, then later, with a careless movement, it is easy to undermine the canvas.

Tip: when cutting the wallpaper with a long trowel and a wallpaper knife, while moving the trowel, do not tear it away from the corner.
Plus, the knife cannot be torn off the wall until the end of the cut.

What to look out for

  • When pasting corners, it is important which canvas you are working with. So if you have cheap paper wallpapers, then you can’t harvest and spread them for future use. They are quickly impregnated with glue and can tear directly in the hands.
  • But there is good news here, the canvas is thin and can be overlapped without trimming. It is enough to roll it well with a wallpaper roller for joints and the overlay in the corner will be almost invisible.
  • On the contrary, paper-based vinyl sheets must be smeared with glue in advance and allowed to soak well. The vinyl covering is strong enough and with soft tapes will be comfortable to work with.
  • Sticking non-woven wallpaper in the corners is also not a difficult task, but there are some nuances here. According to the rules, it is not customary to smear such a canvas with glue, only the wall is smeared. Therefore, in the corner you need to carefully smear several times, and if in doubt, then some experts advise to smear the canvas itself in this place, there is no big mistake in this.
  • Remember that any drafts, included air conditioners, heaters or open windows can cause the wallpaper to peel off.

Conclusion

Do not forget that on heavy wallpaper it is important to prepare the base well. It is advisable to cover the wall 2 times with a deep penetration primer and then cover it 1 more time with wallpaper glue. The price of these materials is now quite affordable, so saving is not worth it. Do it well at the beginning and your walls, for the rest of your life, will be pasted over easily.
