It is believed that unisex in the fashion industry began to develop since the 1960s. This is often associated with changes in the role of women and men in society, all sorts of protests against the established foundations, etc. As for fashion - all this, perhaps, is so. But spirits are different.

Perfumes were not originally divided by gender. Of course, the word "unisex" did not yet exist, but this did not stop the spirits from approaching both women and men at the same time.

Stereotypes have always existed, and sometimes they are very different from today. For example, in medieval France, floral scents were considered quite masculine. For some time, the aroma of a rose was considered the olfactory embodiment of masculinity, and real oriental (both in essence and in the place of creation) fragrances began to be divided by gender relatively recently. This is more likely due to their massive entry into European markets than to the rethinking of the issue by the perfumers themselves.

Here are just a few examples:

However, for me personally, the question is more significant: is it perfumery?

Mixing the difference

There are some. And in many ways this is already a more interesting approach. That is, we have an attempt to specifically create a fragrance “without sex”. What it is: a tribute to fashion, a "gender protest", a desire to please sexual minorities - is not important. The main thing is that perfumers specifically work on creating perfumes that erase gender boundaries.

You may like it or not, as well as the result itself. But in this case, we have before us the fruit of labor, creativity, thought, which is interesting in itself.

Example? Well, who among us positions himself almost as the creator of unisex? The first thing that comes to mind is Calvin Klein and his CK One collection. The first CK One of 1994 and all the “limits” of this series were originally unisex, but until 2016 the main flankers of the line came out in pairs: male and female. With Calvin Klein CK One Gold (2016), the splits ended. Compositions again became unisex.

Unsuccessfully experimenting

Here I would include fragrances similar to the previous ones, but positioning themselves in a strange way. That is, they are not listed as unisex, but have their own gender. At the same time, as a result of an unsuccessful, from my point of view, experiment, they got the opposite character.

These include overly sweet "male" perfumes with the aromas of cakes, feminine compositions with whiskey and tobacco, or something similar. But since officially it is not unisex, we will not dwell on this category.

Gendered

This is a tribute to modern technology. If anyone stands as far as possible from the “unisex” that was formed initially, then these are fragrances that acquire gender. It is difficult to create them, but the essence is simple: some elements of the formula are able to recognize the microflora of the skin, and, depending on this, form a unique sound, peculiar only to a particular person.

A fragrance that plays with unique notes. This is interesting in itself, although this approach has many critics. There are even opinions that all this is a commercial deceit, and there are no “gaining sex”. But that's why we are people, to have our own opinion on various issues.

In the context of this material, one thing is important: if the fragrance gets an individual sound, then it is logical to assume that it will be masculine on a man, and feminine on a woman.

The most common example is Molecule 01 from its famous iso-e-super molecule. Although, in fairness, it should be noted that this molecule is not his invention - it appeared much earlier, but it was thanks to him that it was finalized and gained immense popularity.

Ignoring conventions

Perhaps, this part of unisex fragrances is the closest to the original ones. These spirits do not blur boundaries, do not mix gender differences - they just never had them. They have nothing to do with these concepts at all, as they are dedicated to specific ingredients that can be perceived with the same sympathy / antipathy by people of any gender.

Love sandalwood? Here's a sandal for you. Slightly embellished with secondary components, but it is he who is the soloist. Whose sandal: male or female? Sandal, sorry for the banality, the one who likes this smell, and the rest is nonsense. Do you like oud? Ambergris? Lavender? Anything you want. There are many such ingredients that everyone initially likes. Not to mention such "creativity" of some perfumers as the smell of burnt rubber, a new car, "worms that crawled out after a warm rain", etc.

Examples include niche perfumes or expensive branded collections: Dior Maison Collection, Armani Prive, Hermes Hermessence and others. Of course, some of the songs in these series are gendered, but most are unisex.

This is my personal classification, and perhaps many will find some more categories, while others, on the contrary, will say that two are quite enough: like or dislike. All versions have the right to exist. I just want to emphasize that there are many wonderful compositions in this perfumery, and you should not be afraid of the notorious word “unisex” (although, to be honest, I don’t like it myself).
