We sew pillows with our own hands from a sweater. Ideas for pillows from old sweaters ... I never thought that it could turn out so beautiful! Christmas wreath on the door

Very often, arranging a general cleaning, during which all chests and drawers are pulled out from the farthest corners of the apartment, we find those things that were once very dear to us, but due to the fact that they have long gone out of fashion or have lost their appearance, were hidden away. Over the years, such things accumulate just a whole second-hand!

Meanwhile, you can breathe new life into old things, making them something useful for the household or things that decorate the interior and give it personality traits. Today you can see how interior dolls are sewn from old things, they are put on products using the patchwork technique, making patchwork quilts, rugs and rugs.

There is another fashion trend - the manufacture of pillows from old sweaters, which, due to the softness of the material, are very cute and cozy. Such products can be created from both knitted cardigans and warm knitted turtlenecks - in any case, they will serve you well for several more years, but in a new quality.

Scandinavian designers were the first to make alterations from sweaters - their sweater pillows fit perfectly into the cozy interior of apartments and houses in any style. For their products, they also use stoles and scarves, which also looks very unusual and stylish.

How to make a pillow out of a sweater

We will need the sweater itself, filler (synthetic winterizer, holofiber or fluff), threads and a sewing machine, zipper or buttons. In principle, you can sew on your hands or even crochet, here you can show imagination and skill.
First you need to cut off the sleeves and the neck, leaving only the main fabric for the product - it does not need to be ripped along the side seams, this is useless. If the sweater has a beautiful knitted pattern, then the product will look just great, if the sweater is smooth, then you can come up with some decorations that, however, will not interfere with the intended purpose of the pillow - to be a comfortable support for the head during sleep.
Now you need to stitch all the holes on the typewriter and insert the zipper - this is the easiest way. You can also put one of the side seams on the buttons by sewing on the buttonhole bar and making the buttonholes by tying the cuts. Ties from braid or the same material (cut from sleeves) will also look good. In any case, there should be access for stuffing the pillow with filler.

How can you decorate a pillow made from a sweater if there is no knitting pattern?

It can be a bow from the remnants of the material, large buttons trimmed with soft material or crocheted, flowers made of felted wool or from sleeves and necks. Appliques look great on such pillows - they can be made from any dense material and sewn on by hand. This way of finishing is more suitable for pillows made of smooth sweaters.

We have already mentioned patchwork - in the event that you have several multi-colored sweaters of approximately the same quality, but all have some noticeable defects (moth-eaten, puffs, burnt), then you can cut them into identical squares or rectangles and sew a patchwork pillow.

If the sweater was thin and openwork, translucent, then you can make a great pillow out of it, although this product will require a lining. You can make it from twill, silk, lining, a contrasting color, or the same color as the sweater, but lighter or darker by a couple of tones. Such a delicate pillow will wonderfully decorate a nursery or bedroom!

By the way, you can sew a beautiful pillow not only from sweaters, but also from artificial fur coats that are out of fashion or worn in places. Two excellent pillows will come out of such a children's coat: soft, pleasant to the touch. The baby will be happy to fall asleep on such a pillow, sewn by his mother with love.

After you sew your product out of a sweater, flaps will remain, and quite large ones. If the pillow was intended for the baby, then you can build ears and a tail from them and sew it to the pillow (it can initially be sewn in a round shape). And in this case, the front part can be decorated with an applique eye and nose - you get a cat pillow or a bunny pillow, of your choice!

Do not throw away old things, because they can become a source of inspiration for you and search for new solutions for the comfort of your home.

We offer you a master class on how to completely inexpensively and simply remake an old sweater to sew a pillow for a sofa with your own hands. This pillow will make any place in the house more comfortable.

We have already talked about how to sew children's hats from old sweaters. And if you liked redoing unnecessary things, then you will also like sewing pillows from old sweaters.

Decorative sofa cushions create a unique atmosphere of comfort in the house, especially on cold autumn and winter evenings. In addition, making pillows with your own hands is not difficult, which is good news. One of the great materials for sewing pillows are old things, in particular, knitted sweaters. Pillows in knitted pillowcases fill the house with a special charm and warmth. They will be a nice addition to the interior, and it will be very comfortable to rest on them.

To make a pillow from an old sweater, you will need:

  • jacket, pullover or sweater;
  • unnecessary pillow for the form or pillow filler;
  • light adhesive interlining;
  • pins.

How to sew a pillow from old things: a step-by-step master class

1. If you are using a normal shape pillow, make sure the sweater is wide enough to cover the front and back of the pillow. As a rule, it is better to leave an additional 5 cm on each side for seams. But if the sweater sizes fit snugly, do not be upset - sweaters stretch easily.

2. Once you've found a pillow and sweater that fit together, draw a pillow shape on the sweater with chalk to mark where to cut (top and bottom borders).

3. Cut the shape of the future pillow according to your marks. The side seams of the sweater, if any, should not be touched.

4. If your sweater has no side seams or you are using separate pieces of knit material, you will need both the front and back of the sweater for the pillow.

5. To avoid wavy seams that appear when sewing knitted materials, and to keep your sweater pillow in shape, you will need an adhesive interlining. Cut pieces of interlining the same size as the sides of the sweater for the pillow.

6. Connect interlining and both parts of the pillow sweater from the inside. By doing this, the parts of the knitted sweater will not stretch or move when sewing on the sewing machine. Interlining will retain exactly the shape of the sweater that you cut off.

7. Take both pieces of the sweater with the interlining glued on, fold right sides together and align to the right edge. Pin all sides except for the one you will use for stuffing. If you plan to fill the space with a finished pillow, leave a large opening (about 25 cm). If there is a filler in the form of a synthetic winterizer, holofiber or other material, the hole can be left smaller.

8. Sew all sides, leaving only a hole for the filling that will be in your pillow from an old sweater.

9. Turn the pillow inside out and smooth out the corners. Fill the space in the middle with a regular pillow or filler of your choice.

10. It remains only to close the hole. Fold the edges of the hole together to form a continuation of the seam, and fasten with pins. Sew by hand with a blind stitch.

That's all! The pillow from the old sweater is ready. Once you try it, you'll want to make a pillow in each corner of the sofa.

Now you know another great way that you can sew with your own hands from an old sweater. Such do-it-yourself decorative pillows made of knitted items are very comfortable, soft and original.

I also want to say that I sit down at a sewing machine quite rarely, I have no professionalism in this matter. I do things for my own home. Therefore, this article is not advice or a master class at all, but only material for inspiration. Perhaps in your hands everything will turn out much better!

So let's get started! I took an old beige sweater. I thought for a long time what it can be combined with so that it is elegant and suitable in color. And then, sorting through things in the closet, I came across an old embroidered napkin. The white fabric, which was embroidered, was already worn out and holes appeared in some places. This napkin has been embroidered in the 60s of the last century! It hasn't been used in a long time, so I thought I'd found a suitable use for it.

I took a simple fabric with roses (new), beige cotton lace and decided that all this would be together decorative for my bed.

Before starting work on the "invention" of the pillow, I thought about how it might look. At first I wanted to make it small and take only half of the embroidered napkin. But then I came to the conclusion that you need to use a napkin completely.

By the way, I did not suffer and rip open the sweater, but simply cut it at the seams, separating the sleeves and collar.

I removed the collar and sleeves to those things that are still waiting for me to do them.

I cut out two more or less even rectangles from the front and back of the sweater. I threw away the resulting trimmings, and then also cut off the gum. She somehow did not fit into my “project” of the pillow.

Then she turned to the napkin. I decided to use only the embroidery itself, so I cut it out of the old fabric.

It turned out here is such a preparation. My knitwear turned out to be not “loose”, it does not dissolve at the edges. The future product keeps its shape quite normally and does not stretch in all directions. By the way, if you decide to also sew a pillow from an old sweater, choose knitwear that is not too stretchy, otherwise the warp can easily ruin all your work.

The next stage of work was that I sewed the embroidery to the knitted fabric by hand.

The photo shows that I am only slightly basted embroidery , made the stitches wide and applied black threads. This is so that after sewing on a typewriter, black threads are clearly visible on white and can be easily removed.

The first stitch I did on the machine was a regular stitch. . So it went from beginning to end throughout the embroidery. The second and third seams were also along the entire length of the embroidery, but with an overcast seam.

Here is the embroidery already sewn . I ironed it well so that it fits well on the knitted fabric.

Overlock seam carefully and carefully to connect the embroidery and knitwear well.

This is what the front of the blank for my decorative pillow looked like after ironing.

It's time to prepare inner pillow bag . It is needed in order to fill it with some kind of filler and then the pillow acquires volume. I found a piece of white cloth (it was once used to wrap parcels).

To evenly cut off the desired size of the fabric, I also ironed it. I made the size of the inner bag 1 centimeter smaller than the top decorative pillowcase.

I sewed a simple bag on a sewing machine, leaving one (narrow) side of the bag unsewn.

The edge of the bag was bent and hemmed on a typewriter.

And again I iron the resulting bag for the filler.

And here he is filler. I only had a synthetic winterizer. I layered it and cut it to size.

For the back wall of the pillow, I cut the colored fabric to the size of the knitted strip and added 2 centimeters to its size on all sides. These centimeters are needed in order to make the seams and leave a little to create the volume of the pillow.

If in doubt that you will evenly sew plain fabric and knitwear on a typewriter, sew them together first with a basting stitch.

I sewed the back and front walls of the pillow on a typewriter.

It's time to sew the lace on top of the knitted fabric.

There is no particular difficulty in this. You just need to be more careful about stitching the corners. To do this, carefully fold the lace at the corners so that it is not stretched. Then the pillow will look good.

I lace all four sides of the decorative pillowcase. She, as well as the inner bag, has one side not sewn up.

So the decorative pillowcase for my pillow is ready. Its size turned out to be 35 centimeters wide and 84 long.

This is the back of the pillowcase.

I carefully insert the synthetic winterizer into the prepared inner bag. I don’t stuff it tightly so that the pillow is neither flat nor round.

And again I go to the machine to sew up the inner bag. But I sew the top pillowcase by hand so that I can easily open the seam and wash it when needed.

Here is my pillow!

I agree that the bedspread and pillow are different in tone, I'll work on it!

It seems to me that my new pillow fits the interior of my bedroom.

This is what the pillow looks like from the back.

How long did it take to make this pillow? Just half a day! This is taking into account the fact that I was distracted by various other household chores. I decided for myself that I would try to sew one or two more pillows on my bed, also from old sweaters.

After reviewing this article, everyone will decide for themselves whether it makes sense to sew pillows from old sweaters. Just in case, remember that housewives in our country have long been engaged in home needlework. And the house was decorated with napkins, tablecloths, hand-embroidered towels. And how many rugs were knitted ... Thus, they filled the house with warmth and homeliness. With things made by hand, the house takes on its own look! I wish you all good luck in all your endeavors!
