A simple do-it-yourself metal grill. Do-it-yourself metal brazier manufacturing technology. Welded sheet metal construction

Camping is hard to imagine without barbecue, and hence the grill. A simple factory design is unreasonably expensive. Therefore, it is better to learn how to make a brazier with your own hands and make it yourself. If you have the equipment and skills, you can cook the barbecue at home. If not, making a brazier without welding is also easy. Despite their simplicity, such designs are quite durable.

To cook barbecue was not a burden, you need to know how to properly weld the barbecue. The optimal height is determined by the distance from the ground to the palm of the arm bent at the elbow. The length depends on the number of skewers placed at the same time. So that guests do not have to wait a long time for a delicacy, the right number of servings must be prepared in three runs. For good frying of meat, the distance between the skewers should be 8 - 10 cm. However, you should not make the length more than 1 m, as this will create problems with maintaining uniform heat.

The width is determined by the length of the available skewers, the standard is 40 cm. The height of the walls should not exceed 20 cm. Taking into account the thickness of the coal layer, this will allow placing meat at a height of 10 cm from their surface. At a shorter distance, the kebab will burn, at a greater distance, it will not fry. The thicker the metal chosen for manufacturing, the longer the service life. Usually chosen in the range from 3 to 7 mm.

Stationary Models

These are massive metal braziers mounted on a brick base. But it is possible to use pipes or corners dug into the ground. In addition to rectangular, there are round, oval and other shapes. Stationary models, as a rule, are installed under a canopy or are made with a canopy. In the second case, you will have to make additional drawings and calculations confirming the ability of the base to withstand additional weight. If the racks for the canopy are made of corners, and the roof is made of corrugated board, then the brazier is welded with one's own hands with an assistant.

The simplest option

For the quick manufacture of a conventional brazier, a sheet of metal 2 mm thick is required. You also need to prepare the necessary tools and materials:

  • corner with shelf 40 mm;
  • trimming pipes for legs;
  • grinder with a set of nozzles;
  • electric drill;
  • welding machine;
  • ruler;
  • scriber;
  • construction corner.

For sequential execution of operations, a step-by-step instruction is used:

  1. a drawing scan is applied to the sheet;
  2. with the help of a grinder, a blank is cut out;
  3. side lobes are bent at right angles to the bottom;
  4. joints are welded;
  5. holes with a diameter of at least 12 mm are drilled in the lower part of the long walls for air flow;
  6. cuts are made on top for skewers;
  7. seams are cleaned with an abrasive wheel.

Legs are welded to the finished brazier. They can be made removable if field trips are planned. To do this, short pipes with a diameter of 25 mm are welded in the corners, into which tubes of 20 mm will be inserted.

Frame with corners

This option is chosen when it is necessary to make a solid structure from thin iron. The frame from the corners will not allow the walls to sag. Its corner posts are used as legs. The bottom and walls are cut out separately and welded to the prepared frame. If holes are drilled in the bottom from below, a shelf should be welded to place a container on it to collect ash.

With a place under the cauldron

Such a brazier has an elongated design, part of which is covered with a metal sheet with a place for a cauldron in the form of a round hole. Its diameter is made in such a way that 2/3 of the tank is in the firebox, otherwise the pilaf or other dish will not warm up evenly. When manufacturing, it should be borne in mind that the high location of the cauldron is fraught with burns, and with a low cook, you will have to work bending over.

Collapsible brazier made of metal without welding

Such structures are made when the transportation of an all-metal box is difficult. A collapsible brazier, made of metal with your own hands, is assembled upon arrival at the place in a few minutes. The basis of the design is a frame made of corners. Bolt holes are drilled to secure the bottom. On long sidewalls from below and from above, rods with threads at the ends are welded or fastened with horseshoe bolts, which, during assembly, are inserted into the holes on the end walls. For removable legs, nozzles are installed at the corners of the frame.

Folding barbecue do-it-yourself

It is made in the form of a suitcase with handles or use a carrying case. The walls are attached to the bottom with loops. If you have to make such a brazier yourself, you can use door hinges from cabinets. In another version, a box is installed on the bottom with folding legs, the walls of which are connected by means of slots on them, directed in different directions. When disassembled, all parts are folded into a case or in a suitcase. Grooved options are more durable, but difficult to manufacture.

Do-it-yourself barbecue from a gas cylinder or barrel

The options for making a brazier from these containers are varied, including with a lid and handles. All gas is released from the cylinder. To check the opening of the open valve is wetted with soapy water. If it doesn't bubble, there is no gas. After that, the cylinder, after removing the valve, must be turned over and the condensate removed. For reliability, it does not hurt to fill it with water and hold it for a couple of days.

Production begins with the fact that the cylinder or barrel is cut in height into two halves or only a part is sawn out, leaving the ends intact. A lid is then made from it. The stand is made of a pipe bent by an arc with legs welded to it. Or two racks in the form of the letter M are assembled from the corners and connected with rods. The resulting shelf is used to store firewood and accessories.

After installing the container on the racks, the cut points are covered with corners on which the skewers will be placed. If the future brazier is supposed to be used as a grill, then racks are attached to it on the sides. To prepare a barbecue, brackets are welded under the grill inside.

The cover from the cut out sector is hinged. Its presence allows you to use the barbecue as a smokehouse, if you install a chimney from the end. If the barrel is cut correctly, you can connect it to the filler neck. The cylinder uses a hole where the valve was installed. So that all the coals do not roll into the central part, it is recommended to weld two corners to the bottom, along the length.

Barbecue painting and anti-corrosion treatment

Making a brazier with your own hands ends with its decoration. The compositions used for painting must be heat-resistant, not crack when exposed to temperature changes, without the release of harmful substances when heated. Silicone-based enamels, compositions with titanium dioxide, powder paints have such qualities. The last option is the best, but it is unrealistic to implement it at home, since the polymerization of the applied coating requires heating up to 650⁰C. However, if you wish, you can contact the auto repair shop, where this technology is used to paint the bodies. Since the operation of the barbecue is associated with soot and soot, it is recommended to choose a black color, on which the plaque is invisible.

It does not make sense to paint inside, since any coating will quickly peel off under the influence of high temperature.

To keep the paint firmly, the outer surface is cleaned of dirt and rust with a metal brush and sandpaper. The operation will be accelerated if you use a grinder or a drill with an abrasive nozzle. Then degrease with white spirit, acetone or gasoline.

Liquid formulations are applied with a brush or roller in 2 layers. Paint from spray cans is sprayed from a distance of at least 20 cm from the surface in 3 layers. The subsequent application is carried out after the complete drying of the previous coating.

To protect against corrosion, oxidation is often used, it is also bluing, which forms a heat-resistant black film on the surface. It will protect the brazier inside and out from corrosion for the entire period of use. For bluing you need to prepare:

  • caustic soda;
  • sulfuric acid diluted to 5% concentration;
  • laundry soap.

A container of a suitable size is filled with acid, the details of the barbecue are immersed in it. It will be difficult to process large-sized non-collapsible products at home in this way. After a five-minute exposure, they are transferred to a container with a soapy solution (50 g / 1 l) and boiled for 10 minutes. At the final stage, the parts are placed in a solution of caustic soda (50 g / 1 l of water) heated to a temperature of 140⁰C. After 1.5 hours, they are taken out and washed with water.

The durability of the brazier depends on the choice of the type of metal. Therefore, experts recommend the use of heat-resistant steel. Cast iron in terms of durability, reliability, ability to retain heat meets all the requirements, but professional skills are required to work with it. There is no clear opinion about galvanized steel. Some believe that it is dangerous, since at high temperatures it is possible to release harmful substances. Others believe that it is impossible to heat a brazier with wood to such an extent. Everyone agrees that stainless steel is the best material. A brazier made from it will last several decades.

From the place where the brazier is installed, you need to remove dry grass, branches and other flammable debris, and put a box of sand next to it. If wooden parts are used in the construction, they must be located at a distance of at least 20 cm from the body. So that the smoke does not interfere with rest, it is recommended to install a hood with a short pipe. It is equal in area to the barbecue and is attached to its body.

When caring for the brazier, the following rules must be observed:

  • do not fill coals with water, as this will lead to deformation of the metal;
  • streaks of fat are removed with a rag with sand;
  • to protect against adverse weather effects, the brazier should be regularly lubricated with vegetable oil.

For the manufacture of a metal brazier, the highest qualifications and scarce materials are not required. It is possible that the first copy will turn out to be lopsided, but do not give up. The next brazier will turn out no worse than the factory one.

Brazier drawings

Connoisseurs of a good barbecue know for sure that a lot in its preparation depends on the barbecue, the material and design of which affect the roasting, juiciness and taste of meat. For this reason, barbecue fans not only invent their own recipes for this dish, but also try to make frying devices with their own hands. Most of them believe that it is best to make a brazier with your own hands from metal, which is quite good and easy to process, moreover, it is practical and durable.

Types of homemade barbecues and features of their manufacture

Homemade metal barbecues according to user characteristics can be divided into three large groups:

  • requiring welding of parts in the manufacturing process;
  • collapsible, not requiring welding;
  • braziers made from improvised means.

Also, products are distinguished by the composition of the raw materials from which they are created. It can be cast iron, sheet metal, heat-resistant, stainless or galvanized steel.

Metal in the hands of a skilled craftsman can turn into a real masterpiece.

Collapsible brazier without welding

This type of metal barbecue is a way out for those who do not know the basics of welding, but really want to do it themselves. In addition, in this way you can create a portable model of the structure, which at any time can be easily disassembled and transported in an ordinary car in order to fry a barbecue in nature outside the household. For this reason, it is also called camping or folding.

Folding brazier can fit even in a small suitcase

The main secret of such a device is that each side is equipped with special grooves that hold all parts of the structure together, but, as an option, heat-resistant bolts can also be used for assembly.

It should be noted that the brazier with grooves is much easier to use, since it does not require additional tools for assembly, but in their manufacture, special accuracy is needed in order to ensure the subsequent ease of assembly of the finished product.

In most cases, ordinary sheet metal is used to make such a design, but it is worth trying to make a folding stainless steel brazier. This version of the device for frying kebabs, although more expensive due to the high price of consumables, has an indisputable advantage - it is not afraid of bad weather conditions and can constantly be on the street, does not suffer from repeated picking, does not lend itself to corrosion and therefore will not last. one decade.

Welded sheet metal construction

To create a solid stationary brazier, it is still better to use a welding machine - this way the product will turn out to be more reliable.

Sheet metal brazier

To make a simple steel brazier, it is enough to cut and weld together five metal rectangles: a bottom, two long side pieces and two short side pieces.

  1. It is imperative to mark the elements on the metal under the square so that all corners are guaranteed to be straight.
  2. On both long sidewalls, stepping back a little from the edge, drill several holes in a row with a drill to supply air to the burning wood.
  3. After that, weld all the parts together, placing the parts with holes so that they are at the bottom.
  4. The support legs can also be welded or made removable to make the structure easier to store.

Simple and affordable model

This is the easiest way to make a brazier out of metal, having your own welding machine. If you want something more aesthetic and functional, then a few more parts can be welded to the short sides of the structure in the form of small protruding shelves or made of wood. It will be convenient to put dishes for ready-made kebabs or jars of spices, which are always needed at hand, on them.

Shelves on the sides of the brazier are very convenient

Metal brazier from improvised materials

There are situations when there is no time or money for the construction of a full-fledged barbecue. In this case, craftsmen use everything that is at hand on the farm: metal barrels, empty gas cylinders and even old car wheels.

The new role of the empty balloon

A gas cylinder is most often used to quickly create a brazier, because a good craftsman, with all the necessary tools, can turn it into a full-fledged structure for cooking fragrant barbecue in just four hours.

If such an idea caught your attention, then here are a few recommendations on how the balloon can be turned into an original barbecue with your own hands:

  1. First you need to find a suitable empty gas cylinder with a capacity of about 50 liters on the farm. In addition to it, you will also need two door hinges for attaching the cover, a metal corner and a pipe.
  2. The next step is to prepare all the necessary tools, and this is a grinder, a hammer, a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench, a chisel.
  3. Next, the cylinder should be cut lengthwise into two parts, after making sure that there are no gas residues in it that can flare up from the spark produced by the angle grinder. You also need to cut off or beat off the valve that has become superfluous with a hammer.
  4. The prepared structure must be cleaned of condensate accumulated inside and poured with water for a couple of days to completely clean it.
  5. To make a lid for the barbecue, which will protect the structure from rain and, if necessary, turn it into a smokehouse, you should attach the upper cut-off part of the cylinder to the lower one using door hinges and a drill.
  6. In order to avoid deformation of the product due to high temperatures in the future, it is advisable to strengthen the base by welding a metal corner around the entire perimeter inside the cylinder. It can also act as a support for a grill or skewers. It is best to make cuts along the edges of such an improvised brazier so that you can securely fix the put skewer with meat, and drill several holes in the bottom for burnt coals.
  7. The last detail is the legs. To create them, an ordinary metal pipe welded to the bottom is suitable.

Delicious kebab in an old barrel

By a similar principle, you can make a barbecue from a metal barrel. There are two options here. The easiest way is to cut the barrel into two parts and get two simple but convenient braziers or build a more complex barbecue model with a lid.

Practical design from a barrel for cooking kebabs

A quick option from half a barrel

The only disadvantage of such designs is that in their original form they do not have a very presentable appearance, but if desired, this disadvantage can be eliminated by decorating a home-made brazier from improvised materials with additional accessories - beautiful handles, coasters, decorative forged elements.

Ideas for inspiration on how to make and decorate a metal brazier can be gleaned from numerous photo collections of products by other craftsmen or even eminent craftsmen.

New life for the barrel

How to correctly calculate the dimensions of the structure

Before you make a brazier out of metal with your own hands, you need to clearly determine its dimensions, because steel is not a fabric that can be finished in case of an error.

The optimal size of a homemade barbecue

There are no specific strict standards here, but there are a number of recommendations that will make the design as user-friendly as possible:

  1. In order for the brazier to be functional, its length should be calculated based on how many kebabs are planned to be fried at the same time. A proven option in practice is no more than 10 skewers per 1 m. Thus, if the family is small and huge feasts are not planned, then 70 cm in length will be quite enough.

At least 10 cm is allocated for the placement of one skewer

  1. The width depends on the length of the skewer and, as a rule, is 30 cm if it is standard (the holder and the sharp end always protrude beyond the brazier). Even if the skewers used are of non-standard sizes, then, when determining the width, it should be remembered that the meat is strung only on the central part, and you should not make the grill wider just to heat the air for nothing.
  2. The depth of the brazier in all cases cannot be less than 15 cm. This will allow you to place coals and firewood on the bottom of the brazier so that they do not touch the meat. Too deep should not be done either, otherwise the heated air rising up for too long will lose temperature.
  3. The height is purely individual and depends on the height of the one who will be cooking barbecue most often. It is quite simple to determine it: for this you need to bend your arm at the elbow, as if holding a skewer, and measure the distance from the ground to the elbow bend. It is at this height that it is most convenient for a person to turn the skewers.
  4. To calculate the height of the structure, take a skewer, bend your arm at the elbow and measure the height at which it will be convenient to turn the skewer.

Comfortable height - up to the elbow bend

As for raw materials, here we can talk about structures made of sheet metal, cast iron, heat-resistant, stainless or galvanized steel.

Cast iron is also an excellent raw material for such purposes, because it is durable, reliable and retains temperature for a long time. But to build a brazier out of it on your own at home is unlikely to work, since products from this material are very heavy and bulky.

A rather controversial material is galvanized steel. A galvanized steel brazier is not the most common design option for frying meat, since experienced craftsmen often disagree about the safety of this type of raw material.

Washing machine drum fryer

As you know, with strong heating, galvanized steel releases toxic substances, which, according to some craftsmen, can enter the human body along with fried meat. Although, most professionals believe that the brazier never warms up to a temperature at which zinc is released from galvanized steel.

Quick brazier from the system unit

Very good in the operation of stainless steel products. They, without fear of rust, can be left outdoors even in wet weather or rain. The service life of products made from this material is calculated in tens of years. Among other things, stainless steel braziers look very modern and stylish, harmoniously fitting even into the most modern landscape design of the backyard.

Stainless steel products look very stylish and modern

Homemade stainless steel version

When choosing raw materials for work, also take into account that the thickness of the metal should be at least 3 mm, and ideally 5 mm. In this case, the product will be slightly heavier, but more durable, and will not overheat during use.

Ultimately, the choice of material still remains with the master, who decides what is more comfortable for him to work with, and what kind of product should be the result.

Brazier is the main attribute of a country picnic and a comfortable summer vacation. You can buy this accessory today in any supermarket. Unfortunately, almost all factory structures are made of thin metal, which, after the first "barbecue season", begins to deform and burn through.

The system of assembly of the frying box is not always thought out by the creators, the connections of which, when used, turn out to be inconvenient and unreliable.

Knowing the problems of serial barbecues, home craftsmen prefer their own braziers. In addition to the impressive strength that home-made designs differ in, they allow the creators to fully show their talent and creative invention. It is for these reasons that we will consider in detail the topic of how to make a metal grill with your own hands convenient, durable and beautiful.

In addition to traditional designs, among homemade products you can find unique options. Each of them can be copied without any problems, decorating your summer cottage with an original and useful frying installation.

Design options for metal grills

The simplest and easiest to make barbecue for camping conditions is two U-shaped metal racks stuck into the ground. They occupy a minimum of space in the backpack and are quickly brought to the “working position”. The only drawback of this system is its low height.

It will not work to put such a brazier at a level convenient for baking, because the fire here is bred right on the ground. Otherwise, this design captivates users with its practicality.

The classic metal brazier - a box with legs also has the right to camping life. Only for this it needs to be made folding in order to reduce the dimensions.

For this, window hinges are most often used, welding them to the bottom and long side walls. The end sides of such a brazier are inserted into the sides of the bottom and fastened from above to the side walls with the help of hooks.

A useful detail that you should pay attention to is the holes for adjusting the frying height. Thanks to them, you do not have to re-ignite the hearth to “turn up the heat”.

If you think that the fantasy of home-made people is limited to a banal frying box with holes, then we will easily convince you.

Childhood memories of pirate battles inspired the author with the idea of a barbecue-chest with treasures mounted on two scimitar swords. In addition to the usual frying of kebabs, such a box with a lid can be used as a mini-smoker. To do this, you will need to provide the structure with a small exhaust pipe.

In general, forging is a win-win decoration for any brazier. With its help, you can easily turn an ordinary iron brazier into a real work of "country art".

A useful detail of this design is the side shelf. On it you can lay out kebabs that have undergone a heat treatment process. Below you can make a grate for laying firewood.

Any home craftsman can make a forged brazier today. This does not require building a home forge and buying a blacksmith's hammer. It is enough to look into the construction supermarket and purchase forged decorative elements there. Fixing them to a metal box and legs is a simple matter.

A steel brazier for a summer residence should be not only beautiful, but also mobile. Therefore, we advise you to pay attention to the mobile version of such a frying hearth.

It can be easily moved to any place in the suburban area, hiding from sudden rain or the scorching rays of the sun. Equipping the brazier with a handy skewer, you can try your hand at the art of roasting upland game.

Of course, you will not take such a frying structure with you into the forest. However, it will look at the summer cottage no worse than the stationary one.

And here is a copy with a roof that protects the owner from the vagaries of changeable weather. The rotary holder for the cauldron, which expands the possibilities of this hearth, deserves special attention.

Do not rush to part with your grandmother's inheritance and hand over the foot-operated sewing machine for scrap. Better see how great her cast-iron bed looks like as a support platform for the barbecue.

The smoke from the brazier disturbs the creative imagination of craftsmen. Why not make an original brazier-steam locomotive, they think, sitting down at the drawing?

The main part of this brazier is an old gas cylinder. Having welded wheels, a pipe and a driver’s platform to it, you will pleasantly surprise your friends and neighbors. By the way, the pipe in this case is not a simple decoration, but a channel for the exit of smoke. Such a hearth with a smokehouse can be successfully used for roasting meat and cooking other homemade delicacies.

The military theme, covered in smoke and fire, often finds its expression in original installations.

A car enthusiast who is friends with a grinder and welding will gladly make an original brazier out of the front of an old car. Fortunately, such work does not require much effort. A traditional frying box with a grill is placed in the engine compartment and the design is ready to go.

Some craftsmen manage to make such a brazier mobile, supplying it with a full-fledged suspension with springs.

Take a look around. You will see a lot of unnecessary metal items that can be used to make a barbecue.

An old steel barrel is an almost finished brazier. Yes, not simple, but elegant and functional. By cutting out part of the sidewall, you can make a swivel cover out of it. A frying grate is placed inside the container or two supporting corners are welded for installing skewers.

Rims. What could be better and easier for making a country barbecue? They have all the attributes of such a hearth: a round shape, holes for ventilation and thick metal that will not soon burn through the fire. The only improvement that needs to be made is the installation of a steel sheet with holes inside the disk.

The native slots on the disc are a little too big, so small coals will fall through them. From above, a steel holder for skewers can be adapted into the rim or simply a frying grate of a suitable diameter can be mounted on it.

Optimal dimensions and ease of use

Other people's ideas are good, but how to make such a brazier yourself, you ask? First you need to decide for how many people kebabs will be most often prepared. If only members of your family (3-4 people) are among the lucky ones, then the optimal dimensions are 40 cm long and 30 cm wide. The last size is the length of the skewer excluding the handle. It cannot be increased so that the steel rod with meat does not fall into the brazier.

If the brazier will serve a large company, then its length is calculated according to the scheme of 8-10 cm per 1 skewer. That is, for a company of 6 people, a frying box with a length of 50 to 60 cm is needed with a constant width of 30 cm. A more voluminous box should not be made so that there is no overspending of firewood.

The optimal depth of the roaster is 15-20 cm. This is quite enough to ensure that the temperature during baking is high enough, but the meat does not burn.

Ergonomics is another factor to consider when sketching out a diagram of a future brazier. Its height from the ground should be such that you do not have to constantly bend over, turning the kebabs. Lower your arm, bend it slightly at the elbow and measure the distance from the ground to your fingertips. The resulting size is the optimal height of the barbecue with legs.

The thickness of the sheet for the brazier must also be chosen correctly. Experts say that 2 mm black or stainless steel will be optimal. A thinner sheet burns through quickly, and a thicker one is difficult to process and increases the weight of the structure.

An example of making a simple metal barbecue

The set of tools for this job is obvious:

  • Roulette;
  • Core (for stuffing holes before drilling);
  • Bulgarian;
  • Electric drill;
  • Welding machine.

The first step, from which the manufacture of a homemade metal brazier begins, is cutting sheet steel. Having marked the dimensions of the bottom and side walls on it, we cut out all the blanks with a grinder. At the bottom of the long side walls, we need to make holes for air to enter. To do this, we fix a 6 or 8 mm drill in the drill chuck and make ventilation (the distance between the centers of the holes is 3-4 cm).

A more rational option is not to cut out all the parts separately, but to make cuts in the sheet with a grinder, so that later they can be bent into a three-dimensional structure.

Having bent the cut sheet into a volumetric box, we weld the joints of the walls. This can be done not with a continuous, but with a tack weld, so that the metal is less deformed. For better fixation of skewers on the upper ribs of long walls, shallow grooves can be cut.

The next operation is welding the legs. It is better to make them removable so that the brazier can be transported in the car. To do this, some craftsmen use nuts, welding them to the bottom of the bottom. Then threaded rods are screwed into them. We'll take it easy and use the lower parts of the old door hinges. They have an eyelet for welding tacking and a hole deep enough to accept a steel pin-leg.

Our barbecue is ready for the first barbecue. All operations for its cutting and assembly will take no more than 2 hours.

Brazier- This is an open-type stove that runs on wood and coals. Thanks to this device, you can cook such a tasty and fragrant dish as barbecue. The article will provide information on various models of braziers, the type and consumption of fuel used, methods for igniting firewood, coal, and the manufacture of a classic stove model with different levels of placement of skewers.

Variety of mangals.

The simplest brazier can be made from bricks or stones. In the absence of stone material, a hole is dug in the ground, and branches are laid along the edges to support the skewers. A common design of the brazier consists of metal sheets interconnected in a rectangular box by welding or detachable fasteners.
Braziers are divided depending on:
  • - used materials for earthen, stone and metal;
  • - size for portable (mobile, non-collapsible) and stationary;
  • - source of energy for solid fuel, electric and gas.

What fuel should be used?
To ensure the intensity of thermal radiation, the purity of the smoke, it is necessary to use the following types of fuel:
1. Dry branches, trunks of fruit trees, oak, beech, acacia. Due to the high concentration of carcinogens released during combustion, it is undesirable to use dry material of coniferous and birch.
2. Charcoal. It is made from birch and oak, apple and cherry. It also sells low quality coal, which is made from pine or aspen. The main difference of a quality product is that it is dense, heavy and has a rich anthracite color (charcoal black with a gray sheen).
3. Coal briquettes. Such a product is obtained from hardwood coal by grinding, mixing with natural starch and pressing into briquettes. Close-packed products have a certain caliber that allows you to accurately determine the fuel consumption for different amounts of cooked meat.

Fuel consumption.

Fuel consumption depends on the weight and type of the product being cooked, the direction and speed of the wind, the ambient temperature, the characteristics of the brazier, the quality of the wood. Since there are many variables on which tree consumption depends, let's consider how much fuel is needed for the presented model.

The brazier is placed on the street near the wall, which protects the fire from the wind. The process takes place at a temperature of about 20 degrees Celsius. If this:
  • - 1 kg of pig meat (barbecue) or fish, then the product will cook for 15 - 20 minutes, and the average fuel consumption for firewood / coal / hardwood briquettes will be 2.5 / 1 / 1 kg;
  • - 1 kg of chicken legs, then it will take 25 - 35 minutes to cook the dish. while the average fuel consumption will be 3.5 / 1.5 / 1.5 kg.
The data were collected during 12 experiments from May to June.
How to light a barbecue with wood and coal.
Cooking charcoal from firewood in the grill is very simple. It is much more difficult to start a fire after the stove has been exposed to heavy rain. To ignite fuel in a wet barbecue, you can do the following:
1. Prepare dry branches, logs, in the required quantity to prepare the required amount of food.
2. Place 3-4 prepared logs in one layer on the wet bottom of the brazier.
3. Put crumpled, in an arbitrary form, paper on the resulting wooden base and lay thin chips, branches, and then logs of medium thickness on it in the form of a cone.
4. Set fire to the paper with matches or a gas burner.

5. After the appearance of an intense flame, lay the rest of the prepared wood material and wait for the coal to appear.
Ignition of finished coal or briquettes can be done using the following technology:
1. Pour enough fuel out of the bag.
2. When using charcoal, grind it into equal pieces.
3. Moisten the fuel generously and evenly with charcoal lighter. For these purposes, it is desirable to use a paraffin-based product or the head part of moonshine, since these liquids do not emit a specific odor during the combustion process.
4. After 60 - 90 seconds, the treated fuel can be ignited. Exposure to the specified period of time is necessary for the absorption of the product into the wooden base.
5. With a fan, which can be made from thick cardboard, create intense combustion.
6. After the appearance of powerful thermal radiation, food can be placed on the grill.
Tool and materials.
To make a metal barbecue for the street, you will need the following tool and material:
- drill with drills for metal with a diameter of 6, 10, 12 mm;

Outdoor grill made of metal

The manufacturing process of a multi-level brazier will take place in the following steps:
Stage number 1.
On the prepared materials, mark and cut with a grinder from:
- metal sheet side walls with dimensions 660 X 140 mm - 2 pcs., 455 X 140 mm - 2 pcs., 660 X 455 - 1 pc.;
- corner 45 X 45 two stops of the same length;
- corner 35 X 35 four racks for skewers 350 mm each, lower connecting elements for a barbecue 660 mm long - 2 pcs., 455 mm - 2 pcs., and a table 650 mm - 2 pcs., 455 mm - 2 pcs.;
- corner 25 X 25 tie-supports 585 mm - 2 pcs., 455 mm - 2 pcs.;
- pipes 3/4" four legs 750 mm each.
Saw the board into seven bars 420 mm long.
When cutting all parts, it is necessary to take into account the width of the cut, equal to about 2 mm.
Stage number 2.
On racks from the 35 X 35 corner, according to the photo, mark up to get racks with right-sided (2 pcs.) And left-sided (2 pcs.) grooves. Drill holes with a 12 mm drill, and cut grooves for skewers with a grinder.

Stage number 3.
In the two lower connecting elements for the brazier (35 X 35 X 660 mm), cut a groove along the edges from one plank to match the corners 35 X 35 X 455 mm flush.
Stage number 4.
Using bolts, attach the connecting elements to the side walls of the brazier.
Stage number 5.
Attach the bottom to the formed frame with bolts.
Stage number 6.
Mount the racks for skewers to the formed box in the corners so that the grooves are directed along the width of the brazier.

Stage number 7.
Bolts to the extreme part of the bottom, attach the stops.

Stage number 11.
In two wooden blocks along the edges, cut a groove to accommodate the fasteners of the tie-supports in it.
Stage number 12.
Install the grooved bars along the edges of the table shelf and secure them with self-tapping screws. Fill and fix the remaining boards of the shelf in such a way that a technical opening is formed in the middle, which contributes to comfortable maintenance of the site.

Stage number 13.
Put the brazier on the table, mark the holes in the middle of the brazier walls at the distance indicated in photos 5 and 14.
Stage number 14.
In the wall of the brazier with dimensions 660 X 140 mm, make holes with a diameter of 6 mm (total 12 pcs.), And in the wall 455 X 140 mm - 10 mm (total 8 pcs.).
The portable metal brazier is assembled and ready for testing.

Shish kebab cooked in nature is a delicious dish. If desired, it can also be fried on stones, but it is much more convenient to use an iron barbecue - the meat does not burn, and the coals slowly inflate the air entering through special holes. Thanks to the high location of the brazier above it, you do not need to bend over or squat nearby while cooking. If you have not yet acquired this useful device, then from this article you can learn how to make a barbecue from sheet metal with your own hands, so as not to buy it ready-made.

Schemes and sizes of barbecues

Home-made devices for frying kebabs are divided into 2 groups - stationary and collapsible. The former are made for home or country use and are distinguished by a more massive design, the latter are lightweight folding models for outdoor picnics.

Metal skewers installed in the courtyard of the house come in several varieties:

  • a simple outdoor barbecue with legs;
  • multifunctional device, including a barbecue, oven, stove for a cauldron and even a smokehouse;
  • garden options equipped with a roof, and sometimes with a natural hood.

Multifunctional brazier

Reference. In the manufacture of barbecues, some craftsmen not only combine them with various stoves, but also put an electric spit over the brazier, as shown in the drawing below. Thanks to this, poultry is cooked in automatic mode, as on an industrial grill.

Camping structures are of two types - collapsible and folding. The difference between them is compactness and weight. In the first case, the brazier is made with removable legs and a disassembled body so that it fits easily into a car trunk. The device of the second type of barbecue grills allows you to fold them in the form of a suitcase or a diplomat for manual carrying. A sample of such an original homemade product is shown in the photo.

The next step after choosing a structure is drawing a sketch and determining the dimensions of the structure. In order for a do-it-yourself brazier to be convenient to use and roomy enough, consider the following points:

  1. Choose the width of the product according to the length of the existing skewers, usually it lies in the range of 250-400 mm. If there are no skewers yet, then provide a stationary version as wide as possible, and it is better to make a portable model small.
  2. Estimate how many servings of barbecue you will have to cook at the same time and calculate the length of the brazier, observing the condition: the distance between the skewers should be at least 60 mm.
  3. Choose the height of a homemade barbecue according to your height for the convenience of frying and rotating skewers.

Advice. In order to properly make a barbecue with a metal canopy, when choosing sizes, you should take care of the stability of the structure. It is undesirable to design the brazier too narrow and long, unless you embed the base in concrete. Projects of beautiful barbecues with a roof made of forged elements are shown in the photo.

If you plan to build a gazebo, where the barbecue will subsequently be located, then you need to provide an exhaust hood with a chimney and maintain a distance of 1 m from the firebox to wooden structures.

Preparation of materials

Depending on the purpose and design of the brazier, sheet iron of various thicknesses is used for manufacturing:

  • yard braziers, constantly located on the street, are usually built from ordinary steel with a thickness of 2 to 3 mm;
  • for a prefabricated structure designed for transportation, it is better to take metal no more than 1.5 mm;
  • products that fold into a suitcase or diplomat must be assembled from stainless steel 0.8-1 mm in thickness.

A house brazier can also be made from an old gas cylinder or a 200-liter barrel. You get a finished round-shaped firebox, where it remains to cut out the lid, put the door and weld the chimney pipe so that the barbecue grill simultaneously serves as a smokehouse. How this unusual solution is implemented, look at the photo:

The legs of the structure are made from any improvised means - profile and round pipes, corners and channels. There is only one requirement for them: the supports must ensure the stability of the structure.

Simple Stationary Model - Assembly Order

As a rule, a yard brazier is made by hand from metal, connected by welding. First, the sheets of iron must be marked and cut into blanks in accordance with the drawing. For further actions, we offer the following step-by-step instructions:

  1. Take the blanks of the side walls and drill 5 holes in them with a diameter of 15 mm at a height of 8 cm from the bottom.
  2. Now you need to weld a metal box - the future brazier. A double bottom can be formed in two ways: weld a perforated steel sheet over the side holes or put a mesh and lay the bottom with solid ceramic bricks.
  3. Weld the frame with the crossbars between the legs and attach it to the finished firebox.
  4. To install and scroll the skewers, cut grooves at the ends of the side walls with an interval of at least 6 cm.
  5. Attach the carrying handles to the end walls.

An important point. The correct application of welds is outside, and not inside the firebox, so that they do not burn out. So the product will last longer.

If a propane tank or barrel is used to make a barbecue, then it is necessary to cut a lid in it and put a grid inside. The latter can be bought or welded from steel wire yourself. Make the lid hinged by attaching it on hinges. When you need to make a smokehouse, instead of the semicircular bottom of the cylinder, an iron disk with an opening for the door is welded, and on the other side a chimney is arranged. More information about making a brazier at home is described in the video:

Upon completion of assembly work, ennoble the appearance of the product by painting it with heat-resistant enamel of the KO series or special paint from an aerosol can.

Collapsible brazier made of metal

The manufacture of a disassembled structure is carried out in the same order as the welded brazier, but with some differences:

  1. The cutting of metal parts is done with a margin for bends along the edges, with the help of which the walls are attached to each other with bolts.
  2. The ends of each element must be bent at an angle of 90 ° and holes drilled in them.
  3. The legs are also fastened to the body with bolts.

Advice. When assembling, make sure that the nut and part of the thread is outside, and the bolt head is inside the firebox, as shown in the drawing.

There is a simpler option for joining parts without threaded connections. The fastening elements are the legs themselves made of profile pipes with longitudinal cutouts. The bent ends of the walls are inserted into these slots, and the bottom is simply laid on the bends. The essence of the idea is shown in the next video:

Mangal in the form of a diplomat is somewhat more difficult to make. You will have to work with stainless steel, which is harder to drill and bend. Ordinary iron should not be used, a sheet with a thickness of 0.8 mm will burn out rather quickly, and thicker steel will make the suitcase too heavy. The second difficulty, noticeable on the assembly drawing, is the installation of hinges on the side walls so that they fold inward. End boards are simply welded to the bottom, and the legs are inserted into special sockets.

Conclusion

For a skilled owner, making a barbecue from metal is not a problem. Even in the absence of welding and skills in working with it, a stationary barbecue maker can be twisted with bolts. The main thing is not to make a mistake with the size of the product and not to make it too small. If you have time and desire, you can expand the functionality of the barbecue - weld shelves for firewood and stringing meat, as well as make a canopy so that you are not covered by an accidental rain.
