Waterproof putty: an overview of popular offers from manufacturers

Are you planning a bathroom renovation? My experience suggests that in this case you will need a waterproof putty. A review of its general qualities and technical characteristics of the most popular offers on the construction market will help me prove this.

General provisions

Please note that the prices in the article are current in the spring of 2017.

What properties does a waterproof putty for wet rooms have? Why is it worth using it when carrying out finishing work in a bathroom or pool?

Key qualities

  1. High moisture resistance. If we are talking about rooms with high humidity, then all the finishing materials used in them should, first of all, easily tolerate dampness and direct contact with water drops;

The described quality is necessary for putty even if it is subsequently covered with another decorative facing material. After all, it will protect only from direct exposure to water, but not from steam.

  1. Resistant to temperature changes. It is cold in an unused bathroom, but after you draw hot water into the font, it immediately becomes hot in it. Ordinary putty in such cases begins to change its volume, as a result of which the lining crumbles from it;

  1. Durability. On average, you can count on 20 years of service, so you don’t have to worry about the imminent need for re-repair.

Varieties

The qualities described above have the following types of putties:

  1. Cement. The main component of such mixtures is high-quality Portland cement. This building material with the influence of moisture only gains strength, and does not lose it. Also, a fairly low cost of the product should be attributed to the plus. And if you also choose putty with the addition of, for example, marble chips or colored pigments, then you can do without further decoration at all, which will lead to even greater savings;

If you don’t notice cement moisture-resistant putty on the shelves of a hardware store, then you can safely buy a facade one. Since it is able to withstand atmospheric influences, it means that it will be able to transfer the conditions of the bathroom.

  1. Polymer. These are water-dispersed compositions based on acrylic or latex. In addition to high moisture resistance, they are also distinguished by a simple instruction manual. The only downside is the relatively high cost.

I do not recommend using gypsum putties in the bathroom, even if they have the appropriate marking on moisture resistance. Such mixtures are simply unable to withstand large amounts of steam, temperature fluctuations, and especially direct contact with water.

Starting a bathroom renovation with your own hands, carefully choose all the finishing materials

Despite the modest dimensions of the bathroom, its quality repair sometimes requires much more investment than the repair of residential premises, since here it is necessary to ensure the durability of the finish in conditions of high humidity and variable temperature conditions. And durability largely depends on which putty to choose for the bathroom and how well the surface is prepared for its application.

We will talk about this in this article.

To determine the type of putty, we need to find out the requirements for its properties and characteristics, and then choose from those materials that meet these requirements.

What properties should putty have

Regardless of what kind of decorative finish is provided in the bathroom - tiles (see Bathtub tiling: how to do it right), paint, plastic panels (see Bathroom plastic paneling: how to do it yourself) or something else - leveling the walls the composition must have the following properties:

  • moisture resistance. During the entire period of operation, the coating should not collapse or peel off from the base under the influence of moisture.
  • Durability. The service life of the finished coating without loss of quality must be large and be at least twenty years.
  • Resistant to temperature changes. Since not only the humidity of the air, but also its temperature is constantly changing in the bathroom, these changes should not lead to deformation of the putty layer, its expansion and contraction. Otherwise, the lining on it will not hold.

On a base made of high-quality putty that meets all of the above requirements, the tile is glued “tightly”, and it will not be easy to remove it during the next repair

Note. These are the main criteria by which the composition should be selected. There may be others related to your individual requirements. For example, if the walls are planned to be painted, then the surface should be crack-free and perfectly smooth, which means that the mixture should not shrink and consist only of components of a very fine fraction.

What mixtures can be used in the bathroom

The above requirements are fully met by putties based on cement and polymer binders:

  • Cement waterproof putty for the bathroom It is made from high-grade Portland cement, which only becomes stronger when exposed to moisture. A freshly applied coating is even recommended to periodically moisten or spray with water. As a filler, in addition to fine sand, crushed marble or clinker chips are added to the putty, and for ease of application and improved performance, various plasticizers, modulators, and hardeners are added.

Advice. If you're going to be painting or embossing your walls with a paint roller or similar, look for a pigmented putty in the color you want to cut down on paint wastage.

  • Polymer moisture-resistant putties are made on the basis of acrylic or latex. and also contain various mineral and synthetic additives. They are more plastic and easy to use, do not shrink, and remain viable longer after preparing the mixture or opening the package with the finished composition. And if it were not for the high price compared to cement counterparts, then polymer putty would confidently lead the list of materials for finishing rooms with high humidity.

Advice. You will not be mistaken if you take any facade putty to level the walls in the bathroom. A priori, it must be resistant to any climatic influences, including temperature changes and direct exposure to moisture, but it may cost more.

But gypsum mixtures are absolutely not suitable here, even those that are marked as moisture resistant. They are not able to resist the concentration of wet and hot steam that is often present in the bathroom, not to mention the possible leaks from above.

How to putty the walls in the bathroom

Even if you are confident in the quality of the chosen putty and know how to work with it, you can’t just level the walls with it and tile it on top. The surface must be carefully prepared.

Training

Instructions for preparing the surface for puttying include its cleaning, disinfection and priming (see Primer before puttying the walls - is it needed). All this is done to ensure that the coating stays firmly on it and resists the appearance and growth of mold.

So:

  • Cleaning consists in removing the old, poorly adhering coating from the walls, jointing cracks. If there are protruding irregularities in the form of pebbles, influxes of plaster, metal fittings or wooden mortgages, they are knocked down with an ax or cut off with a grinder. After all these actions, the walls are cleaned with gasoline or solvent from greasy stains and freed from dust.
  • Further, their condition is assessed, and if the surface is seriously damaged, has large potholes and cracks, then they are filled with cement plaster. And if necessary, it aligns the entire plane.

The joints between the plates are filled with mounting foam, the excess of which is cut off after drying.

  • Since a humid environment and warm air are ideal conditions for the development of fungal mold, the next mandatory step is to treat the walls with an antiseptic.

It is important! If the surface is wet, it is pre-dried, and if there are existing traces of mold, it is cleaned with a metal brush and burned with a blowtorch. Of course, first of all, it is necessary to find and eliminate the source of its occurrence.

  • Finally, the walls are treated with a deep penetration primer, which will fill all the pores and microcracks, strengthen the surface and make it more receptive to subsequent puttying.

At this preparatory stage is completed, it remains only to wait for the primer to dry.

alignment

The purpose of putty is to increase the moisture resistance and strength of surfaces and create a flat plane for subsequent decorative finishing. Since we use moisture-resistant putty for the bathroom, the first task, subject to high-quality preparation, is solved by itself. But to align the walls will have to try.

Depending on their initial state, several layers of putty may be required, since it cannot be applied in a thick layer - it will not adhere well and crack.

Therefore, first we fill with a solution all the recesses and cracks or joints and attachment points, if we are talking about plasterboard puttying (read how to do it correctly in the corresponding article). We wait for drying, we skin the “patches” and treat them with a primer, after which you can apply a continuous leveling layer or several layers.

In the process of this work, we constantly control the evenness of the surface and its position in the vertical plane using a long building level. Ideally, each applied layer after drying should be treated with a primer.

But in practice, it is often used only before the last finishing layer, which is usually done with a different putty - less granular and more plastic. It's called the finish line.

Before applying it, the walls must be carefully sanded, removing all splashes, sagging and traces of the spatula, since the thickness of the finishing layer should not exceed 1 mm. However, all this makes sense only if painting is provided.

The surface prepared for tiles may not be perfectly flat, and the roughness will only benefit adhesion to the tile adhesive.

Pay attention to the picture: the bottom layer can be considered satisfactory for tiling or paneling. Finishing is applied only for painting

Conclusion

There are no significant differences in leveling surfaces with ordinary or moisture-resistant putty. In both cases, the work is carried out using the same technology; only antibacterial impregnation, which is usually not required in dry rooms, can be attributed to the nuances.

If this is the first time you are faced with the need for self-renovation in the bathroom, the video in this article will help you get more information on this topic.

Moisture-resistant putty is used at the final stage of finishing the room. It is mainly used for finishing the surface of the wall and can be used both inside and outside the building. Its use in wet rooms requires a special approach, so a special composition is used there, which has all the necessary properties. In addition, high humidity leads to the appearance of mold, and in order to avoid such troubles, you need to competently approach the choice of finishing materials. Depending on temperature fluctuations and humidity levels, you can choose the perfect option for repairing a room.

Characteristics of moisture resistant putties

cement-based

All moisture resistant pastes contain one main component - Portland cement. This material is obtained by combining crushed gypsum and clinker. This powdered substance is stored in a dry form, and before use, a certain amount of water must be added to it and mixed to the desired consistency.

In liquid form, waterproof putty does not last long, since almost immediately after adding water, it begins to harden. If water gets on such a paste composition, this only enhances the process of hardening the solution. For those who are starting to work with putty mixtures for the first time, we recommend that you do not make large batches so as not to rush to use them quickly.

All professional technicians use a moisture-resistant cement-based paste to repair facades. In addition, it is also used for interior decoration of the house, in particular, in bathrooms where moisture is present. Due to its unique composition, any wall surface will be protected from moisture and have a finished look.

Gypsum based

An alternative to cement mixtures is gypsum moisture-resistant putty. The advantage of this material is that its consumption will be less than the use of a cement-based mortar. Despite the fact that the gypsum composition hardens rather quickly, it does not form cracks.

Gypsum putty was created thanks to the gypsum-purcalan composition. It is designed specifically for the repair of wet rooms, so it has found a good response from professional specialists. Be sure to consider these components when buying putty pastes.

However, gypsum putty can only be used under certain conditions. Also, experts recommend using a moisture-resistant gypsum-based paste in which Portland cement is present, otherwise its use in wet areas will be a big question.

Finishing with moisture resistant putty

Waterproof paste is applied to the walls in a standard way. When working with it, a conventional tool is used. Depending on the presence of depressions and irregularities, both wide and narrow spatulas are used. Complete drying of the putty mixture occurs a day after application.

For finishing facades, waterproof putty is often used, which contains additives based on pigment dyes. This allows you to get a better painting of the surface of the facade, since paint and putty have the same composition of dyes.

Waterproof putty with the addition of dyes is also used for interior work. This composition is contained in the finishing putty, which creates a solid foundation for further painting of the wall surface. This method is also economically beneficial, as it significantly reduces the cost of paint.

Do not forget that the finish is made only on a primed and well-dried surface. Repairs should be carried out in dry rooms in order to obtain a good quality of work.

Bathroom finishing

Most often, moisture-resistant paste is used for the room. Given the high humidity of the room, it is possible to obtain a high-quality finish through the use of high-tech mixtures. Modern putty mixtures are based on plasticizers and hardeners, which allow you to get excellent performance in working with wet rooms.

Immediately after applying a layer of mortar, the entire surface of the wall can be slightly moistened. This will allow the composition to harden even more, since moisture will have a maximum effect on the composition of the waterproof mixture.

Additionally, clinker or marble chips can be used as a filler. Such a solution will allow you to get, which will also have the properties of moisture resistance.

Putty is usually applied in several layers. At the first stage, all rough bumps, depressions, cracks are eliminated, thereby creating the basis for the next, finishing layer. In the second stage, an elastic mixture is used, which prevents the penetration of moisture. Moisture-resistant mixtures also include preparations that prevent the appearance of mold.

Before each application of the solution, the surface must be primed, and then allow time to dry well. If it is planned to install the wall with ceramics, a special waterproofing adhesive will be used as an additional component for the primer.

Where is moisture resistant putty mixture used?

For outdoor finishing, waterproof putty is used for facades of buildings, outdoor pools and shower rooms. This protects the walls from moisture, the appearance of various types of mold. The repair technology is the same in all cases, first the first, starting layer is applied, then the finishing one on a waterproof basis.

For interior work, it is used in bathrooms, kitchens, cooking departments, baths. Despite the fact that the interiors have high humidity, the composition of the putty does not change. As changes, there can only be fillers that complement the base of the mixture.

Experts also recommend the use of waterproof-based putty in rooms where moisture is acceptable. It can be a kitchen or other cooking rooms. Despite the abundance of all kinds of exhaust devices, a large amount of steam can appear in the kitchen, which will lead to an increase in the level of humidity. Such frequent drops can adversely affect the walls, which will not have adequate protection.

Baths or showers have a maximum level of humidity. It is necessary to apply finishing in such rooms strictly in accordance with standards and technologies. In addition, before starting work, it is necessary to completely dry all wall surfaces, treat them with antifungal drugs, and then proceed with the repair.

Finishing putty is used at the final stage of finishing work and is intended for perfect leveling of plastered surfaces for further application of paint, wallpaper, etc. on them. However, not all rooms are of the same type and require operation in the same conditions, some of them have high humidity and require additional measures and the use of other finishing materials.

Special finishing mixtures used for wet rooms allow not only to protect the surface from dampness and premature destruction, but also provide resistance to mold and fungus.

Finishing moisture-resistant putty for wet rooms occupies a special place among dry bulk building mixtures and is in high demand among specialists.

Finishing putty can be used in wet rooms to level the following types of surfaces:

  • concrete
  • cement plaster
  • gypsum bases
  • brick
  • wood and wood products

Reliable protection

Dry mixes from various manufacturers used for the manufacture of moisture-resistant putty and the preparation of a room for painting or applying another type of finishing materials contain special additives and synthetic-based components.

Thanks to such additives, the composition receives improved technical indicators, namely:

  • protection against condensation on the surface
  • resistance to possible leaks
  • resistance to moisture
  • protection against ingress of drops into the structure of the material
  • immunity to various bacteria and deposits

Right choice

The use of moisture-resistant compositions for wet rooms in the process of finishing them ensures the strengthening of the structure and the preservation of high performance properties throughout the operation. That is why more and more construction firms, companies involved in interior finishing work, as well as individuals decide to buy moisture-resistant putty for wet rooms. Moreover, the price of the material is quite acceptable.

The best manufacturing companies for their products, such as Knauf, for example, or VETONIT, guarantee the safety of the coating for wet rooms for at least 20 years.

In general, finishing putty for wet rooms provides resistance to changes in air temperature, constant high humidity and does not react to external negative environmental influences. As a result, the surface securely holds the material used as a finishing coating - tiles, mosaics, for painting, etc.

Varieties of materials

Cement finishing putty. The main component is high-quality Portland cement, which, after mixing with water, acquires increased strength and reliability. Vetonit VH is a leveling compound for various premises, based on cement. Also great for outdoor work. By mixing the dry mixture with water, you can completely apply the solution to the surface. Hardened putty is resistant to negative temperatures and moisture. Color: white and grey.

Scope of putty Vetonit VH:

Putty Vetonit VH is intended for primary puttying of ceilings and walls in various conditions. Under the condition of outdoor conditions, it is excellent as a finishing layer before applying a coloring agent.

The foundation:

Cement putties and plasters, for example, Vetonit V, Vetonit T, Vetonit TT, are best suited as a base. The surface must be free of grease, dry and clean. The base must be free of all substances that can impair the adhesion of the solution to the surface. Windows, doors and other surfaces that are not subjected to this treatment must be protected.

Preparation of putty Vetonit VH:

Only clean water should be used for mixing. The dry mixture is mixed with water using a drill and a nozzle specially designed for this purpose. During the first mixing, leave a little water from the total volume. And already 10 minutes after the first mixing, you can add the remaining water and mix again. The time of use of the ready-made mixture is 4 hours from the moment it was prepared. The temperature of the mixture should not be more than 10 degrees Celsius. Water consumption: 8 liters per 25 kg.

Leveling in a small area:

Porous and dry substrate surfaces should be moistened before starting work. The finished mixture is recommended to be applied to the surface manually with a 30 cm spatula.

Leveling on a surface with a large area:

In this case, it is better to use a spatula with a width of about 60-80 cm. The mixture that remains on the spatula can be removed and reused. When applying the subsequent layer of Vetonit VH putty, make sure that the first layer has completely hardened (this may take 1-3 days). After the layer dries, it should be treated with abrasive paper. When operating in a dry room, a day after applying to the surface of the base, the plaster should be moistened with water.

Final stage:

The hardened surface can be wallpapered or painted with acrylic paint. The surface, which has been leveled with Vetonit VH putty, can also be left untreated.

Adviсe:

During work, the temperature of both the mixture, the base and the air must be more than 5 degrees Celsius. Plaster Vetonit VH is not suitable for non-moisture resistant materials, painted surfaces, weak bases and leveling floors.

Plaster Vetonit VH causes irritation of the respiratory tract, skin and eyes, so try to avoid contact with the solution in the eyes and inhalation of the dry mixture. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with water. Use protective goggles, respirator, protective cream or gloves if necessary.
