Do not be alarmed, it's not about chemistry, but about oil (which is present in mayonnaise). There is another way based on the same oil - mix 1 tbsp of vegetable oil and 1 tbsp. a spoonful of alcohol, apply with a swab on the stains, let stand for an hour or two, and then wipe with a cloth.
