Over time, any furniture begins to exude aromas that may not always seem pleasant. How to get rid of the smell of old furniture, without resorting to such drastic measures as changing the situation in the apartment, is of interest to many housewives.

There are many simple products for the care of interior items, after the application of which the smell of mustiness will cease to emanate from the furniture. Most often, old furniture smells due to the development of colonies of bacteria or fungus in it. This is due to the fact that the chest of drawers, wardrobe or sofa has been in a poorly ventilated room with a high level of humidity for a long time. If the activity of microorganisms did not lead to destructive consequences for objects, then the situation can be corrected using self-prepared antiseptics.

After using them, it remains to follow a few simple rules:

  1. Regular ventilation of the room will help prevent the reappearance of unpleasant odors.
  2. Periodically open the doors of cabinets, tables, chests of drawers, etc.
  3. It is necessary to ensure free circulation of air around the interior items.
  4. Of course, it is better to eliminate the cause of the increase in the level of humidity in the room, but for this it is necessary to set the furniture away from the walls.
  5. Do not allow furniture to accumulate dust, which can also be a source of odor. Furniture needs regular cleaning.

Returning to the topic of home antiseptics, one cannot fail to mention chlorine-based formulations intended for bleaching. Bleach (for example, "Whiteness") can be dissolved in water in a ratio of 1:5. It is recommended that they be processed in inconspicuous places, since chlorine compounds contribute to the fading of the lining. Chlorinated products are unlikely to be used on upholstered furniture, the upholstery of which may lose its original color.

Nevertheless, their treatment quite effectively frees surfaces from microorganisms and the odor that accompanies them, but you should not fully rely on the miraculous properties of chlorinated compounds. It is not worth impregnating them with a wooden array. Chlorine vapors will not penetrate into the deep layers of the processed material, and the water that has got into them can provoke a more active development of microflora.

Advice! You can get rid of the smell of old furniture coming from the depths of the closet by applying vinegar.

It is better to use an apple one, but an ordinary dining room does a good job with its duties. 1 st. l. vinegar diluted in ½ cup of water. A sponge soaked in a liquid or a piece of soft cloth wipe all surfaces, joints and corners of the interior item. After that, the furniture is again wiped with a dry cloth. Vinegar penetrates well into the depth of the material, destroying the microflora in the bud, but you should not wipe the furniture with too wet rags.

The vinegar treatment procedure can be carried out again after 7-10 days.

An aqueous solution of potassium permanganate acts like vinegar. The composition for processing should be pale pink. More saturated is able to color the surface.

Removing odor from upholstered furniture

For upholstered furniture, it is better to prepare a detergent based on:

  • water (2 cups);
  • liquid soap (20 ml);
  • citric acid (1 tsp);
  • vinegar (1 tsp).

The composition must be mixed until a thick foam is formed. It is applied to the upholstery with a sponge and left for 2-3 hours. It is desirable that the piece of furniture is in a well-ventilated room. The dried foam is removed from the upholstery with a brush.

If possible, you can put lemon peels, orange peels, etc. under the upholstery.

Destroying odor with sorbents

Citrus peels are active sorbents. How to get rid of the smell of old furniture with their help?

Advice! You can spread the peel of a lemon, grapefruit, orange or lime in the corners of shelves and drawers.

Ground coffee can act as an odor absorber (it is better to place it in a linen bag), crushed activated carbon, table and sea salt, citric acid, baking soda powder (loose sorbent is placed in bowls).

The unpleasant smell in the closet causes serious discomfort to the owners. It is even worse when the contents are impregnated with a bad aroma: food, dishes, clothes or bed linen. Sometimes even absolutely clean furniture smells bad from the inside. Consider why stench occurs and how to eliminate it.

The smell of new furniture

New cabinets almost always smell like varnish. Evaporation of formaldehydes, which are part of chipboard, can also add its note to this sharp bouquet. If the furniture is of high quality, then in 2-3 weeks the smell disappears. If this does not happen, the owners will have to either return the purchase to the store, or constantly use odor absorbers.

The new cabinet is installed in a well-ventilated area, the doors are left open. Weathering will be accelerated if cups of soda are placed in the corners of the cabinet, and tea bags (new or carefully dried used ones) are laid out on the shelves. If the smell does not completely disappear, soda and tea will need to be kept in the closet all the time, changing them every 3-4 weeks.

Bad smells in kitchen cabinets

The musty smell in kitchen cabinets is a sign that moisture has got inside or food is spoiling. They need to be taken out, spoiled - thrown away. To remove the smell from the cabinet, the shelves, the inner surface of the walls and doors are wiped with vinegar. If the smell still remains, the procedure is repeated.

Baking Soda and Vinegar Are the Most Affordable Smell Remedies

With a strong stench, the shelves are fumigated with burnt sugar or dried citrus peel:

  • a sheet of paper is placed on a metal scoop, where 2-3 teaspoons of sugar are poured. The sheet must be crumpled and set on fire. The aroma of smoke will not be very pleasant, but it neutralizes mustiness, and it quickly disappears;
  • put the dried peel of a mandarin, orange or grapefruit on a scoop and set it on fire.

To finally cope with mustiness, several rye crackers, dry lemon, tangerine or orange peels are laid out on the shelves. Soda absorbs odors well. An atmosphere of comfort will be created by a vase with coffee, cinnamon, bay leaf, cloves or ground ginger.

Fight mold in kitchen cabinets

The smell of mustiness can be the result of damage to the walls of the cabinet by a fungus. Most often, mold appears in furniture located near the outer walls. If this is the reason for the fungal infection, you need to either rearrange the furniture or treat the wall with a fungicide.

In the closet where the mold has appeared, nothing can be put until the complete destruction of the fungus. The affected area is wiped several times with hydrogen peroxide or boric acid. If the fungus appears again, use bleach. Deeply ingrained mold spots are scraped off, and the worn place is varnished.

The products taken out of the cabinet are sorted out, the cereals are fried (10-15 minutes in a hot oven). Cereals and pasta that smell moldy are thrown away. All dishes are washed in hot water with baking soda. In an apartment with high humidity, bowls with salt are placed in kitchen cabinets: it absorbs excess moisture well.

Prevention of musty odor and fungus in kitchen cabinets

To avoid the smell of dampness and mold in the kitchen cabinet, you must:

The contents of the linen closet must be clean and dry. The smell of mold in the closet, and then the mold itself, may appear due to the fact that under-dried laundry was put inside. It also smells unpleasantly dry, but for a long time lying on the shelves of linen.

Once every six months, the entire contents of the cabinet must be removed and ventilated in hot weather on the balcony. To get rid of the smell, the inner surface of the walls and shelves are wiped with vinegar. If a fungus appears, the affected areas are treated with hydrogen peroxide, in difficult cases - with bleach.

In old cabinets, mustard powder is scattered on the shelves, the doors are closed and left for 2 days. Then the powder is removed, if the smell remains, the walls and shelves are again wiped with vinegar. Good results are obtained by the use of odorless products that protect the wood from dust and moisture (for example, Sidolux M). If the cabinet is against a damp wall, it is imperative to place bags of moisture-absorbing silica gel on the shelves.

Silica gel is an excellent prevention of high humidity and mold in the closet

Linen should be sorted out, touched by mold or simply smelling unpleasant - washed. To keep the smell of freshness in the closet, put in piles of laundry:

  • sachet with fragrant plants (lavender, rose petals, lilac leaves, mint);
  • flavored toilet soap (after wrapping it in a cloth);
  • empty perfume bottles;
  • sheets of paper with perfumes or essential oils applied to them (after applying oils or perfumes, the paper must be thoroughly dried).

Eliminate bad odors in wardrobes

Often the reason for the unpleasant smell from the wardrobe is the habit of some people to keep clean clothes and stale clothes together. Smells of sweat and deodorants permeate clean clothes. If a smoker has such a habit, the tobacco smell from the closet is guaranteed.

The smell of mustiness arises when undried outerwear is hung in the closet. If the furniture is too close to the outer wall of the house, mold will appear inside the cabinet. They fight mustiness and fungus in the same way as in the previous case: they treat the walls with vinegar, wipe the mold stain with hydrogen peroxide (it can discolor the veneer, so you first need to test it on an inconspicuous area). All things are aired in hot weather: in bright sunlight, moth larvae die. Clothes are inspected, soiled are washed or dry-cleaned.

Particular attention should be paid to shoes in the lower drawers. It is impossible to remove an unpleasant smell from the closet if you store winter shoes with insoles. They need to be pulled out, those that have become unusable should be thrown away, the rest should be put in a sealed bag.

If the smell of naphthalene is firmly ingrained into the wood of old furniture, mustard powder will help. It is scattered along the bottom and hung in bags of thin cotton fabric in the corners. The doors are closed, and after 3-4 days the mustard from the bottom can be swept away.

Soda cans are placed in the corners of the cabinet: it absorbs odors well. To reduce humidity, silica gel packets are laid out on the bottom and in shoe boxes, and a jar of salt is placed. A tried-and-tested remedy for the aroma of tobacco is lavender. Also, the smell of tobacco smoke is effectively absorbed by a wet cloth. It is enough to hang a damp towel on the bar and close the doors. An hour later, the towel is changed. The procedure is repeated 3-4 times.

To keep the ventilated things fresh, sachets with fragrant herbs are placed between the hangers. There is another way: tea bags are sprinkled with perfume or essential oils, dried and hung on a bar.

Tea absorbs odor as well as other sorbents

Measures to prevent the appearance of unpleasant odors in the wardrobe

  • do not store together clean and worn after washing or dry cleaning things;
  • hang outerwear in a closet completely dry. In the season of wearing, it is better to keep it on an open hanger;
  • dry-cleaned items, before hanging in a closet, air on the balcony for 1-2 weeks;
  • for sports, work, hunting, fishing, tourist clothes, allocate a separate closet;
  • if possible, change the insoles of winter shoes every season. Stuff the socks of shoes with newsprint, to neutralize the smell of sweat in the boxes, spread out sachets with lilac leaves;
  • do not store umbrellas in the wardrobe;
  • do not smoke in the room where the wardrobe is located;
  • do not let pets in the closet.

Subject to these simple rules, things in the cabinets will always be fragrant with freshness. To combat persistent odors, it is recommended to use special preparations, for example, OdorGone. Such funds work faster than folk ones, but the latter are more environmentally friendly.

Causes of odor

Smell is the evaporation of organic and inorganic compounds that the olfactory organs are able to capture. To determine how to fix the problem, you need to find out the cause of its occurrence. The most common causes of odor include:

  • Tobacco smoke. The caustic extract of tobacco impregnates all interior items, clothes and, of course, upholstered furniture.
  • Spilled drinks with a strong aroma.
  • Dampness and mustiness.
  • Burn during a fire.
  • Traces of vital activity, marks and various “surprises” of animals.
  • Children's "surprises" in the form of urine and vomit.
  • General soiling of furniture upholstery.

Very often, upholstered furniture is saturated with the unpleasant smell that “reigns” in the apartment. In this case, the fight against the problem must begin with a general cleaning of the entire apartment, washing things and airing the room.

How to remove smell from upholstered furniture?

The main rule for effectively combating the smell of upholstered furniture is to eliminate the cause and remove the stain from the upholstery. This rule is especially relevant when using products such as vinegar or citric acid, since they can “strengthen” the stain, in the future, the pollution simply cannot be removed. In addition, all methods and means used must be tested on an inconspicuous area of the interior item so as not to spoil the upholstery. Next, we will tell you how to get rid of the smell from upholstered furniture in each case.

How to eliminate the musty smell?

If the sofa is just damp and we are not talking about a fungal infection, then just take the piece of furniture into the fresh air, and the smell will disappear on its own. If there is a fungus in the house, then it is completely useless to clean any piece of furniture until the mold is completely removed from the house. After the problem with the fungus is solved, proceed to clean up all traces of it left:

  1. Dry the sofa completely from dampness, both inside and out.
  2. Vacuum upholstery to remove all dust, dirt and mold spores. It is best to do this outdoors to prevent the fungus spores from spreading throughout the house.
  3. Prepare a solution of denatured alcohol by mixing 1 part of the drug with 1 part of water.
  4. Soak a cloth in the solution, wring it out thoroughly.
  5. Wipe the sofa upholstery with a slightly damp cloth.
  6. Put the sofa in direct sunlight and leave the furniture to dry for several hours. The ultraviolet rays of the sun will kill mold spores.

Important! To combat the fungus, use special disinfectants that can destroy fungal spores and prevent their appearance. You can use a fungicide in liquid form for this purpose. Spray the sofa (outside and inside) with a fungicide solution using a spray bottle, allow the sofa to dry completely.

How to remove smell from an old sofa?

If the sofa has not been cleaned for a long time, then such a product simply needs a bath day. You can clean an old, battered sofa with any chemical detergent or use folk methods.

Step by step instructions for cleaning the sofa:

  2. Cover the sofa with a damp cloth, knock out the dust from it.
  3. Vacuum the furniture.
  4. Sprinkle the upholstery of the sofa with salt (regular food or flavored) and leave for the whole day.
  5. Collect the salt with a vacuum cleaner.

  • For capricious upholstery materials (leather, leatherette), use a soapy solution (1-2 teaspoons of liquid soap per 1-1.5 liters of water) with the addition of 1 tbsp. spoons of ammonia. After cleaning, wipe the sofa first with a damp cloth and then with a dry one.
  • Clean velor, jacquard, flock without the use of chemical solvents. Use soapy water and baking soda: first clean with soapy water and then wipe the stained area with baking soda mixed with milk.

How to remove the smell from upholstered furniture from liquids?

Drinks spilled on the sofa penetrate deep into the upholstery, so one wash of the covers is sometimes not enough to get rid of odors that have eaten into the foam rubber and the wooden frame of the furniture. To neutralize amber, you can use special preparations from pet and auto stores (Liqui Moly Geruchskiller, HG5185, Organics Zoo-Zym, Orange-Oxy), or you can use improvised means.

The most effective home remedies are:

  • Acetic acid.
  • Lemon juice.
  • Potassium permanganate.
  • Hydrogen peroxide.
  • Salt (table or flavored).
  • Tea (black or green).
  • Freshly ground coffee.
  • Soap solution + ammonia.

Each method has its pros and cons, so before using these products, test them on an inconspicuous area of upholstery. We will discuss below how to properly use improvised means.

Vinegar

The remaining odor from fish, tobacco, vomit, beer, as well as the smell of a dog can be removed with acetic acid or table vinegar:

  1. Dilute 2 tbsp. tablespoons of acid in a liter of water.
  2. Wet a clean cloth with the solution.
  3. Treat problem areas carefully. If necessary, treat the entire surface of the furniture and leave to dry completely.
  4. Ventilate the room to get rid of the pungent smell of vinegar.

  • Acetic acid can be replaced with lemon juice or hydrogen peroxide.
  • If you are using ordinary table vinegar, then dilute it in a bucket (basin) until a weak solution is obtained. Dip an unnecessary sheet into the prepared solution, wring it out thoroughly and cover the sofa (press it against the upholstery). Leave the sofa for an hour to allow the vinegar solution to penetrate the top layers of the furniture. Repeat the procedure several times until the unpleasant amber is completely destroyed.

Salt

Flavored or table salt will help get rid of the darling that has eaten into the upholstery:

  1. Spread the product in an even layer on the sofa upholstery.
  2. Leave the product for 8-10 hours.
  3. Remove the remaining contaminated salt with a vacuum cleaner or a medium-hard brush.

Important! Salt can be replaced with a mixture of baking soda and potato starch. Prepare the mixture by taking the ingredients in a 1:1 ratio. Due to the porous structure, this mixture perfectly absorbs unpleasant odors.

Tea and coffee

Black or green tea and coffee can help get rid of an unpleasant smell. For this:

  1. Spread tea bags on the sofa or couch, leave for a few days.
  2. Pour freshly ground coffee on the upholstery, leave for 3-6 hours.
  3. Carefully remove coffee residues with a vacuum cleaner.

Potassium permanganate

You can remove the odor left by your pet with a solution of potassium permanganate. The product oxidizes urine and deodorizes the damaged area of the sofa upholstery. Treat the cat's mark with the solution and let the sofa dry.

Ammonia

Urine stains and odors are best removed from upholstered furniture with ammonia:

  1. Wipe the stained area with ammonia, leave for half an hour.
  2. Rub the soiled area of the upholstery with laundry soap, leave again for 20 minutes.
  3. Rinse off the remnants of the product with clean water with the addition of vinegar (1 tablespoon of the product per 1 liter of water).
  4. Dry the furniture.

Important! Children's urine has a lighter odor compared to adult urine, so the odor can be eliminated more easily. Instead of ammonia, use a solution of vinegar in a ratio of 1: 5 in favor of water to remove the darling. Then rub the contaminated area with laundry soap and leave for 20 minutes. You can wash off the product with an aqueous solution with the addition of lemon juice or potassium permanganate. A solution of iodine has proven itself well (15 drops per 1 liter of water), but it cannot be cleaned with a light surface.

Vinegar + baking soda + hydrogen peroxide

To get rid of the pungent smell of animal urine, use heavy “artillery”:

  1. Prepare a solution of vinegar in a ratio of 1:3 in favor of water.
  2. Wet the stained area of the upholstery with the prepared solution, leave for half an hour.
  3. Sprinkle the treated area with baking soda.
  4. Dilute hydrogen peroxide with water and soap solution in the ratio: 1 part of the preparation per 100 ml of water and 1 part of soap solution.
  5. Spray the prepared cleaner on the stain, leave for 2 hours.
  6. Remove product residue with a damp cloth.
  7. Vacuum the sofa and dry the surface.

Upholstered furniture requires not only careful attitude to it, but also regular care. In order for the sofa and chairs to serve for a long time and be in excellent condition, you must adhere to the following rules:

  • Periodically clean the upholstery of upholstered furniture. Every month, knock out the sofa from accumulated dust and treat the upholstery with soapy water or a special shampoo for the care of upholstered furniture. Unpleasant odors can appear not only from urine, sweat, but also from general pollution during the operation of the product.
  • Wipe up any spilled liquid immediately. As soon as you notice a stain from a spilled drink, try to collect the liquid as soon as possible with napkins, paper towels or rags so that it does not pass through the upholstery fabric and does not get on the interlining (technical fabric) and synthetic winterizer. If a lot of liquid is spilled, it can reach the wooden base. In this case, it will be very difficult to remove the smell from upholstered furniture.
