Plastic window sills - dimensions and characteristics. Wide window sill: alternative installation How to make a large window sill in a panel house

Recently, it is plastic options that are extremely popular. First of all, their practicality, durability and ease of installation are taken into account.

They perform not only a practical role, but also an important aesthetic function: they decorate the room and make it more complete in terms of decoration. The interior space of the room looks organic and complete.

There are both standard models with certain dimensions, and plastic canvases that allow you to model the window sill according to your own sketch. A wide range of colors implements any design solutions. With the help of plastic, imitations of the structure of wood, stone, granite are created. Outwardly, it looks attractive and very unusual.

Measurements and calculation

To measure the desired size of the window sill board, it is necessary to take into account the recesses that remained after the dismantling of the old structure. As a rule, the length of the new plastic window sill is 50-150 mm longer than the old one.

The width, in turn, is 30-40 mm, since, unlike a plastic frame of 60-70 mm, wooden ones have a thickness of 100 m.

Standard parameters of window sills:

  1. Length standard plastic panels- 4500-6000 mm. As a rule, six-meter strips are delivered to shops and markets, which are already cut to the required size on site.
  2. Width- 100-1000 mm with a step of 50 mm, which allows the use of plastic window sills with different thicknesses of wall partitions. Due to this property, the installation depth and further performance characteristics vary.
  3. Thickness- 18-22 mm, on which the strength of the product depends, functional loads and service life are determined.

Subtleties of choice

A very important nuance is the quality of products. Despite the fact that plastic window sill boards may look the same, however, in terms of their content and conscientiousness of execution, they are completely different. How to distinguish a good manufacturer from an outright hack?

All types are divided into premium, middle and economy classes:

Economy options

Window sill NikoPlast

These include window sill blocks of Russian and Chinese production. They have a low cost, a small range of colors, a shorter warranty period and are lighter than their German counterparts.

Such manufacturers include sill blocks NikoPlast, Montblanc, Bauset. This does not mean that the window sills of these companies are not suitable for use. Not at all. It's just that they are not designed for a heavy load, they have thinner stiffeners and an imperfect surface.

There are cases when characteristic black spots appear on thin PVC boards over time, which cannot be removed.

Middle class

It is characterized by reinforced stiffeners and increased strength properties. Covered with a protective polymer film and have a fairly wide selection of colors. Produced in Belgium, Ukraine and Russia. These include Vitrage, FineDek. Dimensions are selected individually, and the window sill board itself has high wear resistance.

Premium class

Window sill Werzalit

The perfect option, the service life of which can reach 70 years. The peculiarity of one of the elite German designs is the monolithic fusion of crushed wood and polymer resins.

The Werzalit company uses a similar production method. Such window sills are heavier than standard ones, but they are durable and have high strength. Premium manufacturers cover the windowsill blocks with an acrylic protective film, which makes them resistant to thermal and mechanical stress.

The following companies are noted: Moeller, Danke, Melenger and Crystalit.

Application area

The main feature of the plastic window sill- the possibility of using in a residential area, in offices, hotel complexes, educational, medical and some industrial institutions. Such a wide range of distribution is explained by high performance, excellent colors and excellent strength properties.

Depending on the size, there are two types of window sill blocks that are used in apartments:

  1. For panel structures use window sills with a width of 200-300 mm.
  2. For brick- 500-600 mm wide.

A more peculiar area of application is plastic bar counters, countertops.

Properties and characteristics

Plastic window sill blocks are distinguished by colors:

  1. The most common is a white window sill, which is glossy and matte.
  2. In the form of a standard wooden canvas.
  3. With marble imitation, granite and stone coating.
  4. Bright creative colors.

Also, they differ depending on the type of coverage:

  1. Using melamine as a surface, you can achieve high temperature performance, moisture resistance and any shape. The technology consists in applying 7 different types of coating based on polymer resins.
  2. The second more popular type is PVC film., which has a low cost, is resistant to open flame and ultraviolet radiation.
  3. acrylic coating- an achievement of modern industry, which allows you to implement the most sophisticated color solutions. Acrylic film withstands mechanical loads, severe temperature changes, does not scratch, always remains smooth and uniform.

Main characteristics:

  1. Racks to load from 5 to 10 kg per square meter.
  2. Have a wide temperature range- 30-60 degrees.
  3. Weight from 7 kg per 1 square meter.
  4. Various stiffeners: diagonal and vertical, on which the strength of window sill blocks depends.

Advantages and disadvantages

Choosing one or another type of window sill construction, the buyer relies on the advantages that will help him cope with various goals.

It is very important to know what advantages plastic window sills have:

  1. Appearance of window sills. They look beautiful, fit into any interior and come in both a classic white look and other color options.
  2. High strength properties. They are achieved due to stiffening ribs, increased thickness of the surface web and solidity of the structure.
  3. Easy to install. PVC plates can be easily cut, moved from place to place and mounted in a window opening of any width.
  4. not combustible. The special plastic formula avoids burning, which makes the window sill safe.
  5. moisture resistant. Do not swell, do not absorb water and do not crack over time. They can be installed in rooms with high humidity: bathrooms, swimming pools, saunas.
  6. Not demanding in care. Plastic window sills are very easy to clean. You can use both ordinary soap solutions and special products.
  7. Does not respond to direct sunlight. Does not fade even after 10 years, does not deform.
  8. Excellent thermal insulation material. In addition to other practical properties, plastic helps to keep the heat in the room.
  9. Does not interact with chemical and biological substances. They do not rot and are resistant to bacteria and microorganisms. Helps prevent mold formation.
  10. Long service life. Over the years, it does not change its external characteristics and withstands significant mechanical wear.
  11. Cheapness of the material. Since plastic is a chemically created raw material, it has a low cost. Thanks to this, products from it are gaining extraordinary popularity.

Disadvantages:

  1. If you prefer a matte finish, then often there is a problem with the rapid contamination of the surface. Since these window sills have micropores that can become clogged, they require careful maintenance.
  2. Do not allow to implement the design ideas of the ecological direction because they are made of artificial material.
  3. Not always suitable for wooden windows. However, by correctly choosing the color of the film coating, this disadvantage can be neglected.

Before installation, it is imperative to measure the future window sill. To do this, using a tape measure, the width of the window opening is determined, which takes into account the need for heating devices.

You can either order the desired size of the window sill in advance, or cut it on the spot from a single piece of plastic sheet.

Price

The price of a plastic window sill depends on:

  1. Manufacturer. From the promotion of the brand and the quality of the material used.
  2. Performance specifics. Very important characteristics are the thickness of the plastic, the placement of the stiffeners, the production technology.
  3. protective coating qualities. Since the protective coating ensures the long service life of the window sill, its quality is very important. Acrylic coating is the most expensive, and PVC film is the cheapest.
  4. Countries. The more expensive the equipment used, the more spent on transportation, the higher the cost.
  5. Web width. Depending on the size, the price of the product also differs.

Rate examples:

  1. The most expensive plastic window sill can be bought from the Russian company Melenger. Its cost starts from 960 rubles per linear meter.
  2. In the middle price segment are the following companies: Moller, Werzalit, Danke, Crystalit. Their price starts from 330 rubles per linear meter.
  3. The cheapest options are NikoPlast, Montblanc, Vitrage. The cost starts from 55 rubles per linear meter.

In a standard situation, the window sill is used as a small shelf. For example, due to the abundance of natural light, this is where houseplants usually stand. But such restrictions are typical only for narrow window sills - wide functionality has much more.

In the kitchen

The window sill can be wide in itself - just the presence of a deep window opening is enough. And if natural stone (or stone agglomerate) is used as a material, then such an element of the interior can become one of the central ones. Especially if this role is emphasized with some kind of decorative accessory “in the theme”.

Another good option for using the natural width of the window sill is to combine it in the same plane with the countertop in the working area of the stove. This is an example when both the battery is in place and the width of the hanging part of the window sill does not interfere with the natural convection of warm air.

What if the height of the window sill is slightly lower than that of standard kitchen furniture? In this case, you can “distract attention” with a narrow desktop pencil case on the border between the common worktop of the working area and the half-expanded window sill. Of course, the heat transfer from the battery will be somewhat reduced, but an increase in the number of sections and the presence of heating kitchen appliances can compensate for this.

In some house projects, a niche for the battery is provided specifically in the area of the window opening. If the radiator is moved, then in a niche under a wide window sill, you can equip a small cabinet for storing supplies and kitchen utensils.

Warm floors make it possible not to "break" the layout of the kitchen, but to use the window opening area to install a full row of cabinets under a common acrylic stone worktop.

Another example of a similar solution, but with a sink in the corner.

This photo shows an example of using a window sill of a non-standard window (the standard one was also not forgotten - it can be seen on the right). The small width of the opening and a rather large height are successfully used for the arrangement of a classic bar counter in two levels.

A wide window sill is a good place to organize a dining area. And to adapt to the height of the countertop, bar stools with level adjustment can be used.

It’s easier in your house - even at the project stage, it’s enough to lay a window opening for the kitchen with a window sill height at the level of a standard dining table.

And this photo serves as a good illustration of how in an ordinary apartment of a panel house a narrow window sill can be expanded to the size of a small dining table for two.

The kitchen in the studio often uses a bar counter to separate zones. In this case, it is combined with one table top with a wide window sill and a working area.

In the West, often (less often in our country) designers of private houses recommend using English windows with a lifting mechanism for opening the sash. This makes it possible to install under the sink window. Like in this photo.

If the mixer is installed on the side of the opening of a wide window sill, then the “European” window systems familiar to us can also be installed. In this case, a sink, a narrow cabinet, and a dining area for one person fit under the window.

And at the end of the "kitchen theme" - an unusual lantern window, in which the window sill does not protrude beyond the boundaries of the opening at all. But the width of the opening is large enough to be used both as a "shelf" for kitchen utensils, and as a place for flower pots standing on two levels (taking into account the built-in glass shelf).

In living rooms

In living rooms, a wide window sill is most often used in the same way as in the kitchen - to equip a workplace or storage system.

Moreover, a home office can be arranged in a children's room. As in this case, the young lady.

And in the "adult" bedroom.

In the living room, under a wide window sill, you can equip a closed shelf for books or little things in baskets.

You can even organize a whole series of racks not only below the window sill, but also in the piers next to the window openings, and in the window openings themselves.

If the neighborhood of “cold” glass does not bother you, then on a wide windowsill you can arrange a small hard “bench” for reading.

Or an ottoman (sofa without a back) with soft pillows.

But you can also combine a place to relax on the windowsill with a shelf for books in a niche under the window.

We select, buy and install plastic window sills

One of the leaders is the Meller window sill, high-quality and relatively inexpensive. For example, a white window sill, 250 mm wide and 2200 long, costs about 1200 - 1300 rubles. And, unlike budget Russian window sills, it retains its original appearance for many years (manufacturer's warranty is 3 years, service life is up to 40 years). They performed very well in wet and cold conditions. If you had to deal with budgetary Russian window sills, then you know that in one year they lose their whiteness, especially if there are flowers on them and no cleaning agents can save them.

For lovers of glossy window sills, Danke window sills of decent quality from a Ukrainian manufacturer can be offered. The manufacturer guarantees its products for 10 years. The window sill is covered with a unique ELESGO acrylic laminate, made in Germany, which is applied using hot melt adhesive.

Many buyers of window sills are also interested in their installation. We carry out installation of window sills from 250 rubles per linear meter, depending on the width of the window sill.

We obtain the length of the window sill by measuring the width of the window opening and adding 10 - 20 cm for wall launches. The recommended launch value per side is 50-100 mm. For example, window width 2.150 m + 0.1 m = 2.250 m.

The width of the window sill is determined by measuring the distance from the window to the corner of the wall. In other words, we need the thickness of the wall. We add 10 centimeters to the result obtained, this is the release of the window sill. If you want a wider window sill, then you can add more, the main thing is that the radiator is far from the window sill and thus the circulation of hot air is not disturbed due to the large protrusion of the window sill.

Important so that the thickness of the wall is the same on both sides. If the thickness of the walls is not the same, then you need to take the largest thickness and add to it the distance of the protrusion of the window sill. During installation, an oblique cut of the window sill is made so that its protrusion is the same along the entire length.

Plastic window sills (pvc window sill), reviews:

Wash very well. I have never regretted that I chose window sills from this company. Recommend. There is no installation. But the masters can be found on the pros.

Pros: Cool coverage. They wash without problems. Do not shy away

Minuses: No installation

September 14, 2016
Specialization: master in the construction of plasterboard structures, finishing work and laying flooring. Installation of door and window blocks, facade finishing, installation of electrics, plumbing and heating - I can give detailed advice on all types of work.

In this review, we will figure out how to install a window sill on a balcony without involving outside experts. The workflow is simple but requires some knowledge, so carefully read all the information below and choose the option that best suits your conditions.

The working process

From the title it is clear that I will talk about three mounting options, they have their own differences and are suitable for different design options. I note right away - the technology is suitable for plastic, and for wooden, and for other structures, you just need to choose the solution that will provide the greatest reliability of fastening.

Method number 1 - installation on polyurethane foam

This is without a doubt the most common and simplest option, which is used in the vast majority of cases. It is simple, but not suitable for all situations. I advise using this technology for window sills of small width, slightly protruding from the surface.

For work, we need the following materials:

Mounting foam It is best to use a professional version, which is accurately dosed with a gun and has a finely porous structure. But you can also use ordinary household cylinders with a straw, the main thing is that the composition has a low expansion coefficient, otherwise it can raise your window sill during polymerization. Of the manufacturers I use Soudal and Baumaster, there are other excellent options, but personally I use these
Window sill stands To fix the element in the position we need at the required angle, we need to put it on supports, which should be in two rows - one at the window frame itself, and the second near the edge of the wall. If the thickness of the wall under the window sill is small, then one row of linings is enough
metal corners They are necessary if there is no normal base under the window, for example, if the wall is finished with drywall and there is a gap between it and the wall. In this case, you can attach yourself with the help of corners, they will act as supports and determine the position of the structure. But they can also be used in conjunction with stands, if you attach small corners after foaming, you will fix the position of the structure, and the foam will not lift it
Silicone With its help, all joints and cracks are sealed, the end of the window sill is smeared to seal the joint. Simply put - if you see a gap, then seal it, this will prevent the penetration of moisture

Work is carried out in the following order:

  • If there was an old window sill on the balcony, then it must be dismantled, this process can proceed differently depending on the method of fastening the structure. If this is the Soviet period, then, most likely, you will have to pull out huge nails;
  • Cleaning the surface of debris and a careful inspection of the structure is an important part of the work. If there are voids on the sides or under the window frame, then they must be sealed with mounting foam. If this is not done, then cold air will be drawn from under the windowsill, believe my experience and do not save foam for good insulation of all voids;

  • Two rows of linings of the required height are laid out on the prepared base, for this it is easiest to use pieces of wooden bars or plastic elements. It is necessary to check the position of the window sill by placing it on the lining and applying a level from above, so you can immediately figure out if everything is fine. The angle should be 93-95 degrees, a slight slope towards the room will not allow condensation to accumulate on the surface;

  • Then you should apply mounting foam to the surface. It is not necessary to fill the entire area under the structure, the main thing is that the foam covers the junctions with the outer wall and interior decoration and closes the space near the slopes. An example of quality work is shown in the photo below;

  • Installing a window sill on a balcony with wedges is even easier, because you will use a very simple and convenient system. The design consists of two long wedges that are connected to each other using teeth on the surface. You can move the top element up or down to find the optimal position for the window sill, all quickly and accurately;

  • Mounting is done on a layer of foam, which you must apply as recommended above. The composition is applied taking into account that it will expand, after its distribution, the window sill is carefully placed under the window frame and fixed with heavy objects for a couple of hours, most often containers with water or weights are placed if you have them. And do not forget to coat the junction of the window sill and the frame with silicone sealant;

  • As an option, I can also advise another way to fix the window sill, two suspensions are screwed to its lower part along the edges, which are then fixed in the wall in the desired position of the structure. There is one caveat: if the walls are concrete or brick, then before fixing the window sill, you need to drill a hole in the wall and insert a dowel so that there is where to screw the screw.

  • Lastly, excess foam is cut off, if any, gaps are sealed with sealant and end strips are put on, which simply snap in and hold without additional fixation.

We will immediately figure out how to fix the window sill on the balcony if there is no base under it, but there is a gap between the exterior finish and the wall. In this case, we need to create stops for the structure ourselves.

The work is done like this:

  • To begin with, a window sill is inserted under the window so that you can determine in what position it will be placed, if possible, you need to make marks from below so that there is a guideline for further work;
  • Then corners are attached to the wall, their size depends on the width of the structure and can be from 35 mm or more. It is best to use options with stiffeners, as they withstand loads much better, which means they will ensure the strength of your window sill;
  • The structure slides in so you can make sure everything is tight and level. If everything is fine, then the window sill must be removed, and a layer of foam should be blown into the cavity around it, it is sticky, so it will not fall down, but will close the space, and will not blow from under the structure;

  • After the lining layer has hardened, the foam is applied so that you can glue the window sill on it so that it does not rise, it can be additionally fixed with self-tapping screws to the corners. Silicone sealant is applied to the junction of the frame and the window sill so that moisture does not penetrate in this place. After the foam has hardened, its excess is cut off, and the surface is puttied.

In order not to be mistaken with the amount of foam, you can apply it along the window in a small amount to glue the element, and then add composition from below if necessary.

Method number 2 - mounting on clamps or mounting strips

This option is in many ways similar to the above, but it seems to me more reliable, especially if you are a beginner. Using a special fastener, you can ensure the ideal position of the window sill and its excellent adjunction to the frame even without the use of silicone sealant.

Do-it-yourself installation is carried out according to the following algorithm:

  • First you need to clean the surface of dust and debris, if there are protruding areas of foam that remain after installing the window, then they should be cut off. It is important that our plastic or wooden window sill fits snugly against the surface;

  • Next, you need to fix the brackets to the structure, they can be plastic or steel, to ensure the best reliability, the step between them should be 150-200 mm. If you have a special profile, then you need to cut off the piece you need and attach it to the plastic structure using self-tapping screws;

  • If the width of the window sill is more than 15 cm, then a number of external stops or wedges must be laid to ensure reliability. Sometimes the surface is flat and nothing needs to be laid, in this case check its plane, and if everything is fine, then this stage can be skipped;
  • Then foam is applied to the surface, which will ensure a secure fixation of our window sill over the entire surface. Remember that it needs to be applied sparingly and that it expands afterwards;

In order for the mounting foam to better adhere to the surface, before applying it, it is necessary to clean the base from dust and debris and moisten it with a spray gun.

  • Lastly, the window sill is put in place and snapped into the profile or latches until it stops, if everything is done correctly, then the elements will ideally adjoin each other and be positioned evenly.

Method number 3 - using brackets

Now I will tell you how to properly install a wide window sill on the loggia. This option is becoming more popular for the simple reason that flowers, balcony vegetables, or even use the surface as a table can be placed on a wide structure. The design of the large width can even be used as a bar counter, that is, you create a great place to relax, and all you need is to install a wide window sill.

This version of the work is very different from the above, but I will not call it very difficult. On sale there are all the components we need in order to securely fasten a large-width structure. The work instructions are as follows:

  • First you need to purchase everything you need. In addition to the window sill itself of the required width, we will need latches or a profile to fix it on the window structure and mounting foam to fill the voids and glue the element. Brackets require special attention, the easiest and cheapest way is to use furniture options that can be of different sizes and colors, their photo and size plate are shown below, you need to choose the best one;

  • The work begins with the fact that our clamps are attached to the window sill, after which the window sill is inserted into them, do the work with an assistant so that he holds the structure while you take all the necessary measurements. If there is space, then stops are placed so that the structure is located at the angle we need. After that, brackets are applied and their attachment points are marked on the wall and window sill;

If the window sill will be used as a bar counter or as a place to grow plants, then it is better to place the brackets in half a meter increments to ensure the best reliability.

  • Holes are made in the wall at the marked points and dowels are inserted. Next, brackets are taken and attached to the wall. We get a finished design that will hold the window sill;
  • Foam is applied to the surface, this process is carried out in the same way as in the cases described above, so there is no point in dwelling on it in detail;
  • Next, the window sill is taken and snapped into the latches, after which it must be attached to our brackets from the underside. For this, special self-tapping screws 16-20 mm long are used, it is best and easiest to screw them in with a screwdriver. There is no need to pre-drill any holes, the hardware is already perfectly included in the material.

I would like to tell you about another interesting option. If you do not always need a wide window sill, but only on occasion, then you can use special folding brackets. They allow you to lower the structure when not needed and quickly set it up when needed, this solution is ideal for creating a mobile workplace or a bar counter when receiving guests.

Do you want to carve out at least some usable space in your small kitchen from nowhere? This is possible if you use a window sill - replace it with a countertop and integrate it into a work or dining area. From this article you will learn how to do this as efficiently as possible, what technical nuances you need to take into account when reworking, and what variations of the window sill-countertop are.

General rules for reworking a window sill-countertop and practical advice

  1. The main condition for arranging a window-sill-countertop of any configuration is that air must circulate freely around the radiator.

The heat from the battery should freely rise up to the window, and the cold air from the window should go down. Otherwise, the kitchen will become cold and damp and, even more dangerous, the kitchen windows will constantly fog up. If the latter happens, then the slopes of the window, and then the walls of the kitchen, will become moldy.

What to do? If you plan to use the window sill as a table or cabinet with open shelves, then for normal air exchange it is enough to make several holes in it or build in a ventilation grill as shown in these photo examples.

If you plan to equip the underframe of the window sill-countertop with cabinets, then their doors should have perforations or lattice inserts, as, for example, in this photo.

An example of arranging a cabinet with lattice doors under a window sill-countertop

  1. Keep in mind that a countertop window sill and, especially, a cabinet built on top of the radiator (even with lattice doors) will worsen the heating of the kitchen (by 2-3 degrees). You can compensate for heat loss by installing an additional radiator or underfloor heating systems. In addition, the battery from under the windowsill can be moved to another location along the same wall or to an adjacent wall. The transfer of a radiator ideally requires a coordinated design and thermal calculation, however, in practice, the consent of the House Management Company is often sufficient. And one more nuance - since the transfer / replacement of the battery requires turning off the riser and draining the water, this should be done in the non-heating season.
  2. The window must be at least 1.5 cm higher than the window sill.
  3. To prevent mold from forming on window slopes, do not forget to treat them with an antiseptic primer. And so that the slopes can often be cleaned from accidental stains and splashes, they should be painted with moisture-resistant paint.
  4. In no case should a stove be installed on a countertop window sill. Firstly, it is prohibited by sanitary and building codes, and secondly, it is simply impractical, because oil splashes during cooking will certainly end up on the windows.
  5. When planning to leave the battery under the window sill in plain sight, it is highly desirable cover it with a decorative screen, paint in a bright color or to match the wall. However, sometimes it is enough to replace a large and outdated radiator with a more compact and modern one.

Radiator with perforated screen under the window sill

  1. Due to the proximity of the window and the adjoining to the outer wall, the window sill-countertop must be made of a super-wear-resistant material. Perfect option - fake diamond, which is not afraid of either moisture or culinary work and, moreover, allows you to create a seamless surface. If the outer wall of the kitchen freezes and leaks, the windows are prone to fogging and mold once “bloomed” in the room, then you should play it safe and choose an artificial stone for arranging the countertop window sill.

  1. No matter how you arrange the space under the window, it should be well lit. For this you can use wall sconces or pendant lights. If the window sill serves as a bar counter, then the pendant lamp can be hung at a height of 70 cm from its surface. Lamps above the work area can hang even higher, the main thing is to place them directly above or in front of the workplace, and not behind it (otherwise, the person standing behind the tabletop will simply block the light from the lamp with his back).

  1. The window above the window sill-countertop is most practical to decorate with cassette roller blinds, fastened directly to the sash. Also, all types of short curtains are suitable for window decoration: Roman curtains, standard "rolls", horizontal blinds, cafe curtains or classic curtains.

  1. Sometimes, in order to get the most out of the kitchenette, you need a countertop window sill with an irregularly shaped canopy. So, for example, it can narrow in a high-traffic area (say, near a refrigerator) and expand where it is more spacious.

It is also very good when the corners of the window sill countertop are not sharp, but rounded.

  1. When arranging a working window sill-countertop can be a problem search built-in dishwasher suitable height, because most PMM models are designed for a height of the lower tier of the kitchen 82 cm.
  2. If the window sill has very wide slopes, then it is advisable to narrow its new countertop (and the cabinets offered for it and, possibly, the sink). After all, if you sum up the depth of a wide window sill with the depth of a standard 60-centimeter countertop, you get too much distance from the window to the edge of the table.

Options for arranging a window sill-countertop

The window sill-countertop can be equipped and used as:

  • Working area with a sink under the window;
  • Work surface for food preparation (without washing);
  • Dining area or bar for breakfast and snacks;
  • Additional storage space for equipment, products and utensils.

Let's look at each of these options in more detail.

Window sill as work surface (without sink)

Converting a window sill into a countertop allows you to increase the work surface with minimal clutter in the kitchen, makes it possible to cook under pleasant daylight and with a view out the window. Also, the window sill-table top offers a bonus - the ability to use it as a bar table or equip the underframe with additional storage spaces. However, the window sill work surface also has disadvantages:

Since most often the window sill-countertop implies association with a set, the question arises - what to do if the height of the window sill and the floor cabinets of the kitchen do not match? Here are some solutions:

  • If the window sill is higher than the cabinets, the headset, then everything is simple: the kitchen countertop and cabinets line up under the window. At the same time, the gap between the window sill and the tabletop is protected by the same material that trimmed the apron or closed with a ventilation grill. In this case, the canopy of the window sill can be cut off, the window sill can be replaced with a shield to match the tabletop and used as a shelf.

  • If the difference between the window sill and the cabinets is small, then the kitchen furniture is adjusted to the window sill due to the plinth and legs, less often due to the height of the cabinets themselves and increasing the height of the floor. Here are some useful numbers:
  • The standard height of the headset cabinets (without countertops and plinth) is 72 cm.
  • The plinth has two standard sizes - 10 cm and 15 cm.
  • The height of the kitchen window sill in a city apartment can vary from 72 to 90 cm (excluding countertops).
  • The standard thickness of the kitchen worktop (it must be taken into account in calculating the final height of the kitchen) is 4 cm or 2.5 cm (less often).
  • Ideally, the height of the work surface should be 15 cm below the bent elbow of the owner / hostess of the kitchen.
  • If the window sill is lower than the kitchen furniture, then converting it into a countertop is more difficult. The most radical way is as follows: the window sill is increased to the height of the furniture, and the window is set to a smaller size. However, this is possible only in a private house, and in a city apartment such interference with the load-bearing wall and the facade of the building is prohibited. However, if the window overlooks the loggia, then it is legally theoretically possible to “raise” it. The second way: the size of the window opening does not change, but the design of the window changes - it is supplemented by a horizontal impost (additional frame profile). As a result, the lower part turns out to be deaf and closes with a cabinet, while the doors above the window sill open as usual. Outside, the deaf part of the window can be hidden behind a flower balcony "pot".

This countertop window sill could look even better if the window mullion ran directly over the table.

The third and easiest way: the kitchen is simply installed on top of the windowsill (see photo below), and the niche formed behind it is used to store household chemicals or indoor plants. Unfortunately, such a solution is not ideal: you will no longer be able to open the window wide open, it will not be so easy to clean up the niche, the insolation of the room will worsen, and from the point of view of fire safety, the idea is not very successful. However, these inconveniences are not so critical.

And finally, the fourth way: the window sill and furniture are combined, but they are not adjusted to each other in height, but the kitchen worktop is adjusted to them. You can beat the difference between surfaces in different ways. For example, different levels of the kitchen can simply be lined with the same countertops. As a result, the interior will turn out, although not so well-coordinated, but in general it will look good.

Also, different levels of the kitchen can be united by a single countertop with invisible seams (in this case, it should be made of wood, and preferably of artificial stone in a contrasting color).

Window sill with sink

A window sill with a sink is the most desirable, complex and costly remodeling project to implement. After all, in addition to the problems described in the previous chapter, the question of supplying water and drain pipes to the window is also added. In addition, washing in the windowsill, although it brightens up the home routine with pleasant lighting and views of the surroundings, is not always convenient in practice. First, if the window slopes are not too wide, the window will often splatter. Secondly, the sink mixer will prevent windows from opening.

How to move the sink to the window and bring water communications to it?

As a rule, there are no problems with the supply of hot and cold water pipes, but with the supply of the drain pipe from the sink to the riser, you will have to get confused - install it at an inclination of 2-3 cm for each meter of length. At the same time, all communications must be hidden, for example, inside a kitchen set, in a plasterboard box or on a podium.

Now a little about coordinating the transfer of the sink. If you move the sink along the "native" wall, then the development of the project is not required. Transferring the sink to the opposite or adjacent walls already requires the development of a project and its legalization in housing authorities.

And here are other useful tips for arranging a window sill-countertop with a sink:

  • It is desirable that at least one window sash opens 90 degrees, then you can wash the window completely without any problems. To do this, you need to place the sink not in the center of the opening, but closer to the edge.

The exception is tricuspid windows - in this case, the sink is placed opposite the central blind sash.

  • To minimize splashes of water on window panes, choose a deep sink, and it is better to choose a mixer with a medium or deep spout.
  • If possible, it is worth installing a folding mixer (with a bayonet mount) instead of a conventional mixer. Such models are more expensive, but they allow you to open the windows of the window-sill-countertop wide open without any problems.
  • Since there cannot be a cabinet for storing dishes above the sink by the window, it should be provided on the side of the sink or under it. For the same reason, a sink should be chosen with a drainer for drying dishes.

Window sill-countertop as a dining area or a place for snacks

The easiest way to convert a window sill into a bar counter or a dining table is to replace the countertop, add one or two supports or underframe (if necessary) to it and choose the right chairs. As a result, the dining area is compact, well-lit and very cozy.

  • Keep in mind that there must be a distance of at least 25 cm from the front edge of the window sill-bar to the radiator / wall, otherwise the legs of those sitting will rest against them.

  • The shape of the window sill table may have an irregular shape as shown in the photo below.

  • How to make a dining table-windowsill with your own hands? Just install a folding wall table on the same level as in the photo below.
