A variety of crafts made of metal candlestick. Candlesticks from cans are an economical solution for any occasion. Detailed master class how to do - by link

Do you want to decorate your house for the holiday or just create an atmosphere of comfort in it? Then just decorate the dining table, shelves and consoles with candles. And to save on buying a lot of candlesticks, we recommend making them yourself. In this material, you will learn 7 ideas for making candlesticks from readily available, improvised, and even junk materials in just one evening.

Idea 1. Candlestick made of wooden cuts

A saw cut of a tree is an almost ready-made candlestick, beautiful, environmentally friendly and versatile. It will be appropriate in or interior design all year round, including New Year's holidays.

How to do it: You can make your own saw cuts, but it's faster and easier to buy ready-made saw cuts, which are sold in many online stores and craft stores. "Ready" saw cuts are good because they do not have splits and cracks, they are properly dried and can already be sanded. You can pick up saw cuts of different diameters, heights, different types of wood and make a whole set of candlesticks. You can make a cell for a candle in a saw cut using a drill with a forstner drill (about 150 rubles) or another drill that can make a blind round hole of the diameter you need (for example, it can be a “ballerina”, a wood crown, a spiral or drill bit, etc.).

Idea 2. Wooden block candlestick

And here is another idea for making a candlestick out of wood with your own hands, however, this time from a bar. However, you can replace the bar with a dried log or a board of a suitable size.

How to make it: To make a large wooden candlestick with your own hands, you will need:

  • Dry planed or unplaned wooden block (better wider so that the candlestick is stable). In this master class, a 100 × 100 mm bar was used.
  • A drill and a Forstner drill of a suitable diameter (for your candles) or any other drill that can cut a blind round hole of a small depth of 0.5-1 cm or more. A drill with a diameter of 50 mm was used here.
  • Square.
  • Roulette.
  • Pencil.
  • A hammer.
  • Stain of the desired color, rags or brush.
  • Rubber gloves.

Step 1. First of all, you need to cut a piece of the desired length from the bar with a saw or jigsaw. In this project, the candle holder was made to decorate a large table, so it is 90 cm long. Think about how many candles your candle holder will hold, and how much space there will be between them. Then mark the cut line, cut off the bar and lightly sand its end with sandpaper.

Step 2. Next, you need to draw markings on the bar for placing candles. To do this, first determine the length of the indents from the edges of the candlestick (in this MK there are indents of 7 cm), then simply place the candles on the bar with equal intervals, circle them and mark the center of each circle with a dot.

Step 3. Using a drill and a Forstner drill, cut blind round holes of small depth. Do not worry if the edges of the cells turn out to be rough, for our rustic candlestick this is only a plus.

Step 4. Give the tree an aged and sloppy look by tapping the ends of the candlestick with a hammer. You can make dents in only a few places or on all visible sides of the bar.

Step 5. Now you need to give the tree color, while maintaining the visibility of its pattern and beautiful texture. To do this, simply rub the stain with a soft cloth into the surface of the product in one layer, and then let it dry.

Here's what you should get.

Idea 3. Candlestick from a bottle

Glass bottles make not only elegant or vintage candlesticks, but also caps. Here are some ideas that you might like and that are very easy to implement.

Such candlesticks, made by hand from cut bottles, can be beautifully packaged and presented to loved ones.

How to do it: There is nothing easier than making a candlestick from a bottle with your own hands as in the photo above, because for this you just need to cut it and fill it with wax with a wick, or just put a small candle. There are two ways to cut a glass bottle.

  • Method 1: Soak a thick cotton thread in alcohol (eg nail polish remover), then wrap it around the bottle. Light the thread with care and immediately begin to rotate the bottle around its axis so that the fire spreads along the entire length of the thread. Now immerse the bottle in boiling water for 3 minutes, and then immediately transfer it to a container of cold water. Due to a sharp temperature drop, the glass will crack where the burning thread was tied. True, if the glass is too thick, for example, like a bottle of champagne, then the procedure will have to be repeated 2-3 times.
  • Method 2: If you have a glass cutter or glass drill, then you can use them. Wrap the bottle with a hair tie, and then draw a line along its contour with a glass cutter. Burn the cut line, immerse the bottle in boiling water for 3 minutes, and then quickly transfer it to cold water.

When the bottle breaks, sand the sharp edge first with coarse sandpaper and then with fine grit.

Now that the candlestick is almost ready, you can insert the wick into it, fix it in a vertical position (eg, with Chinese sticks as shown in the photo) and finally fill it with pre-melted paraffin.

Idea 4. Candlestick from a glass or tin can

Banks are another improvised material from which you can quickly and easily make a candlestick. In this collection of photos you can get ideas for decorating Christmas candlesticks.

In this video you can see a master class on how to make a New Year's candlestick with your own hands from a glass jar.

And here is an example of candlesticks that you can make with your own hands from a tin can.

You can see a detailed master class on making a candlestick from a tin can in the next video.

Idea 5. Gypsum or concrete candlestick

Concrete or gypsum poured into any container, drying, takes the form of a container. Thus, to make a candlestick with your own hands, you only need to find a suitable disposable container, for example, a plastic bottle or a yogurt package.

These cute concrete candlesticks were poured into yoghurt cups.

Idea 6. Candlestick-flashlight made of polymer clay

Polymer clay (plastic) is great for making figured or openwork candlesticks, in which the light from a candle decorates the walls with fancy patterns or plots. If you need to make a themed candlestick, say, for Halloween or New Year, or you just have an original idea, then we advise you to experiment with this material. Next, we present a selection of photo ideas for lanterns and candlesticks made of polymer clay.

Materials and tools for homemade:
- metal rod (diameter 10 mm);
- sheet steel (thickness 1-1.5 mm);
- three joiner's nails;
- round-nose pliers or pliers;
- building corner (wall thickness 4 mm);
- a piece of pipe with a diameter of 2-3 cm with a wall thickness of at least 2 mm;
- slotted screwdriver;
- grinder (need cutting and grinding discs);
- an inverter-type welding machine (it will be necessary to cook with an electrode of 2 mm with a current of 60-80 A), a semi-automatic device is also suitable for such purposes;
- paint and primer for metal;
- marker.

The process of making a forged candlestick:

Step one. Bar bender

First of all, you need to start by making a small template with which it is convenient to bend a metal rod for a candlestick. The template is made very simply, for this you need to take a piece of a corner 10 cm long and then weld two bars 5 cm long to it, the distance between them should be 3-4 cm. That's it, this device can now be clamped in a vise. If there is no vice, then another rod can be welded to the corner on the other side so that the fixture can be fixed to the table with a hole.

Step six. Making leaves for legs
To cover the legs of the candlestick, the author makes leaves out of metal. In total, four such leaves will be needed, they should be even, the same in size and beautiful. To make sheets, you will need to make a template, for such purposes you will need a sheet of cardboard 9 cm long and 5 cm wide. Then the template is circled on a sheet of metal and cut out with a grinder. The edges are processed with a grinding disc.

Make veins on the leaves; for this, the leaf is pre-marked with a felt-tip pen. Along these lines, then you need to make serifs of small depth with a grinder. Further, the leaves are processed from above with a grinding wild of a petal sample.

To give the leaves a relief, their tips need to be bent with pliers. This can also be done by hand if the metal is soft. One end of the leaf should look up and the other down. In this case, the bends should be smooth, without creases.

That's all, now the leaves can be welded to the legs. Welding is carried out on the other side. You need to work carefully so as not to burn the leaves. It's even easier to solder them. The leaves may change color when welding, this is absolutely normal. Everything, at this stage the base of the candlestick is finished.

Step six. Making bowls for candles

First, the author makes a crescent-shaped template out of paper, it is 11 cm long, 6.5 cm wide, and the bending depth is 2.5 cm. Well, then the template is circled on a sheet of metal and cut out with a grinder.

Two crescents need to be adjusted to each other so that they are tightly connected. Then they bend from the inside, and a bowl is formed. There can be a gap of no more than 1 mm between the halves of the bowl. To bend the bowls, you need a flat, round object. For such purposes, a pipe or a round mallet is suitable. The halves are welded on the inside.

Making a forged candlestick

To bend the rod, we need a device that is easy to make on our own. We take a building corner about 10 cm long and weld 2 rods 5 cm long to it from the outside at a distance of 3-4 cm from each other. To work with such a device, fix it in a vise.

If there is no vise, weld another 5 cm long rod on the inside of the corner. This will allow you to fix the fixture to the edge of your desktop through the hole.

With a grinder, we cut off a part 15 cm long and another 35 cm long from the rod. Then we round the ends with a grinding disc.

With the help of our bending device, we give the long rod an S-shape. To do this, we insert it between the rods of the device and gradually bend it. The stop point of the rod must be changed by bending a little. We put the pipe on one of the ends of the bent rod - this will be a lever that will allow you to apply less effort. The longer the pipe, the more leverage and, accordingly, less effort.

We cut the rod into 4 parts of 8 cm each, they need to be slightly bent, which can be easily done using our device and pipe. Mentally divide the rods into three parts and make a fold at a distance of 1/3 from the edge. These are the legs of the future candlestick.

Round off the ends of the rods. With a stone-type disk, we make indentations at opposite ends. Thus, we will provide a tighter connection between the legs and the vertical base of the candlestick, which, in turn, will allow us to more accurately weld the joint.

Now we take a rod 15 cm long, and attach the legs to it with the help of welded points, retreating 1 cm from the end of the rod. The deflection of the legs should be directed straight down. Do not weld the legs on all sides at once. First, we fix each with a welding machine at several points and check how smooth the product is. We put the workpiece on a flat surface, it must meet 2 indicators:

  • a long rod must be located strictly vertically
  • all 4 legs must touch the surface at the same time

If necessary, bend one of the legs or break off and reattach. When the product is sufficiently even, we weld the legs of the candlestick along the entire diameter and clean the seams with a grinding disc.

Now we will decorate the vertical axis of the candlestick with a twisted braid. To do this, we cut out 2 strips from a steel sheet 40 cm long and 1 cm wide. We weld them to the candlestick in several places. Do not be too zealous, as these are temporary connection points. The angle between the base of the rod and the strips can be different, at your discretion, but the main thing is that it must be the same for both strips.

We bend the strips around the rod, one after the other, alternating them by half a turn. It is most convenient to bend them with your hands, but if you wish, you can use pliers. The last, upper, turns do not go around strictly around the rod, let's let them be a little further from the base. Throughout the entire length, the metal strips should be separated from each other at a small distance; if necessary, they can be moved apart with a slotted screwdriver.

After wrapping the strips around the rod, they must be broken off at the base with a slotted screwdriver. We bend the ends of the strips around the legs of the candlestick and weld them completely. To make the strip evenly bend around the leg of the candlestick, you can nail it with a hammer.

Now the S-shaped rod needs to be attached to the vertical base of the candlestick. We make weld points along the entire diameter of the rod, if necessary, clean them with a grinding disc.

In the same place, we attach the ends of the braid of the rod and check again the symmetry of the distance between them along the entire length.

Next, we make 4 leaves with which we will cover the legs of the candlestick. All of them should be equal and equal. To do this, we cut out a sheet template from thick paper, 9 cm long and 5 cm wide. We trace a leaf on a sheet of iron according to the template and cut it out with a grinder. We process the edge with a grinding disc. And so with each leaf.

Mark the veins on the leaves with a felt-tip pen, observing symmetry. We make shallow serifs with a grinder exactly along the marked lines. After that, lightly process the surface of the leaves with a petal-type grinding disc.

We bend the tips of the leaves with our hands, or with round-nose pliers. One tip should be bent up, the other down. The fold lines should be smooth, avoid creases.

Weld the leaves to the legs of the candlestick at the bottom where the leg meets the leaf. Do not overheat the leaves to prevent them from burning. It is almost impossible to burn the legs themselves, so you can safely melt them, and not the leaves. Do not be alarmed if the leaves change color after welding, this is normal.

The junctions of the leaves and legs are clearly visible in the photo.

The base of the candlestick with legs is ready. Now let's work with the upper part - the candle bowls.

We need a crescent-shaped paper template with a length of 11 cm, a width of 6.5 cm and a bending depth of 2.5 cm. We trace the template on a sheet of iron and cut out 2 crescents with a grinder.

We connect two crescents so that they fit snugly against each other, and bend them from the inside, forming a kind of bowl. The allowable gap between the halves of the bowl is not more than 1 mm. For bending, we use a flat round object. It can be a pipe of suitable diameter or a round mallet. From the inside, weld the halves.

Now you need to weld along the entire length of the joint inside and out. The weld point should partially overlap the previous one. Thus, a full-fledged weld will be obtained. Strip it from the outside with a petal disc.

There will be 3 candles in our candlestick, so repeat all the operations 2 more times.

We weld a joiner's nail 3-4 cm long inside each bowl, exactly in the center.

Then we will attach the bowls to the candlestick. We fasten each of them with welded points, observing the same angle of rotation relative to the base of the candlestick. Rotate the entire structure and control the angle of the bowls in all planes, bending them if necessary. Fasteners using welded points have elasticity, which will allow you to bend the bowls a little without breaking them off. After placing the bowls in the correct position, weld them on both sides.

We clean the formed seams with a petal disk.

The candlestick is ready. However, to complete the product, it is necessary to paint it. Black paint is best. It does not have to be heat resistant, as any paint has some temperature resistance. In our case, the heat source is candle wax, which is not hot enough to damage the paint.

You can turn to professionals, but I think that painting it yourself is much more interesting. In auto enamel stores, you will find fairly high-quality coloring compositions in cylinders, so no special tools are required. In addition to paint, you also need a primer, which can also be purchased in a bottle.

Work must be carried out in a ventilated area. It will not be superfluous to use a respiratory respirator. The surface of the candlestick must be cleaned of rust, if any. Then apply 2 thin coats of primer with an interval of 20 minutes. After the primer has dried, apply the main paint in 2-4 thin layers with an interval of 15 minutes. Do not strive to completely paint over the surface of the product from 1 layer and do not allow paint streaks. After applying the last layer, leave the candlestick with paint to dry for several hours.

One author shared a technique on how to make a forged candlestick yourself. Everything is made of sheet metal, as well as a steel bar. The elements are connected by welding, here it is very important to be able to cook with dots. So, let's start manufacturing.

Materials and tools for homemade:
- metal rod (diameter 10 mm);
- sheet steel (thickness 1-1.5 mm);
- three joiner's nails;
- round-nose pliers or pliers;
- building corner (wall thickness 4 mm);
- a piece of pipe with a diameter of 2-3 cm with a wall thickness of at least 2 mm;
- slotted screwdriver;
- grinder (need cutting and grinding discs);
- an inverter-type welding machine (it will be necessary to cook with an electrode of 2 mm with a current of 60-80 A), a semi-automatic device is also suitable for such purposes;
- paint and primer for metal;

Step two. We make blanks
To make the first blanks for the candlestick, you will need to work as a grinder. From the rod you need to cut two pieces 15 and 35 cm long. The ends of the rods need to be rounded off with a grinder.

Next, our previously made machine comes into play, with the help of it, the rods need to be bent in the form of the letter S. The rod is inserted into the template and slowly bent to the desired shape. To obtain the desired bend, the fulcrum of the bar during the bending process must be slightly shifted. To bend the rod was easy, you need a lever, a steel tube is suitable for such purposes. The longer the pipe, the easier it will be to bend the rod.

Step three. Production and installation of legs for a candlestick
To make the legs, the rod needs to be cut into 4 parts 8 cm long. The made segments will need to be bent a little, it is convenient to do this using the same template and lever made earlier. The segments must be mentally divided into three parts, and then make a fold, stepping back from the edge 1/3.

Next, the legs of the candlestick need to be rounded at the ends, the grinder comes into play again. In order for the legs to be securely and beautifully fixed on the candlestick, special recesses must be made at opposite ends. For such purposes, a stone-type disk is well suited.

After the legs are made, they can be attached to the candlestick, here welding comes into play. The legs must be welded to a rod 15 cm long, 1 cm must be retreated from the edge of the rod. The deflection of the legs should look down. It is not necessary to weld the legs immediately tightly to the rod. First you just need to grab them, and then see if everything is done smoothly. If you put the rod on the table with the legs down, all four legs should touch the table, and the rod should be strictly vertical. If this is not the case, the legs must be adjusted or broken off, and then welded again. After the desired accuracy is achieved, the legs are welded along the entire diameter of the rod. Next, the welding spots need to be sanded.

Step four. Decorating the vertical axis
In order to decorate the vertical axis, two strips need to be cut out of the steel sheet. Their length should be 40 cm and width 1 cm. The strips are welded to the candlestick by welding in several places. As for the angle of installation of the strips, here you can choose to your taste, the most important thing is that the angle of the two strips is the same.

Now the strips can be bent around the bar, the strip goes one after the other with an alternation of half a turn. The easiest way to bend them by hand, but you can use pliers. Closer to the top of the strip, it is no longer necessary to wrap it tightly around the bar. In the process of winding metal strips, a small distance must be maintained between them. If this did not work out right away, then later it can be obtained by pushing the plates apart with a slotted screwdriver.

At the final stage, the strips must be broken off from the bar with a slotted screwdriver and then bent around the legs. In this position, the strips are finally welded. To go around the strips well, you can use a hammer.

Step five. Further Assembly
Next, the author attaches the S-shaped part of the candlestick to the second element, that is, the vertical rod with legs, made earlier. This is done using spot welding, you need to weld well. Subsequently, the welding spots must be sanded.

After that, in the same place, other edges of the metal strips wrapped around the rod are welded. Before welding, you need to make sure they are symmetrical.

The author also makes veins on the leaves; for this, the leaf is first marked with a felt-tip pen.

When the structure is assembled, now it can be well welded at the junction from the outside and from the inside. You need to weld with dots, while each new dot should slightly cover the previous one. As a result, a full-fledged welding seam is formed. Outside, then it needs to be processed with a petal-type disk.
