Do you like retro items, but the prices in stores are not encouraging at all? Learn how to make vintage with your own hands - update furniture or create elegant decor. And we will teach you how easy it is to do it.

In this master class you will learn:

  • 4 ways to turn the most ordinary wardrobe, stool or chest of drawers into vintage furniture;
  • 6 easy ways to add a retro touch to the little things you already have in your home.

So let's start.

1. Wardrobe with French "windows".

Do you have an old shabby cabinet with glass inserts on the doors? Before you send it to the country, remember that it is these things that are especially appreciated by vintage fans. Update it in just a couple of minutes with the help of elegant fabric applications.

Making such a closet is easy. The most difficult thing here is to choose the fabric in the right style. You can choose solid colors, floral patterns or, as the author, a pastoral scene in the style of "zhuyi".

Measure pieces of fabric along the width of the "window", and then stick them on double-sided tape. That's it, your handmade vintage-style locker is ready!

2. Graceful retro stool.

This piece of furniture is in almost every home. The stool is pretty worn out, but is it still fit to sit on? Amazing! For a vintage item, this is an excellent base.

First of all, sand the wood and then coat it with a dark gray primer. When dry, apply a second coat - white. After drying, carefully rub it with sandpaper until the gray starts to show through.

Then make a seat out of foam rubber and a suitable fabric, fix it and get a graceful piece of furniture with retro touches.

3. Chest of drawers with patina.

Do you have an old wooden chest of drawers? Excellent! Even if his condition leaves much to be desired, or the color does not suit him, it does not matter. On the contrary, this is a chance to turn it into elegant vintage furniture - much cheaper than in salons. A couple of simple steps, and this chest of drawers will become your favorite.

Sand the surface of the chest of drawers with sandpaper, then apply blue acrylic paint (pink, but muted tones will do) and wait for it to dry. Scrub some areas with a sponge to make the paint appear uneven, sand with sandpaper to show through the wood.

It remains to screw the handles (by the way, they do not have to be the same) - and admire the exclusive handmade item.

For more on that, see our selection of master classes on this topic.

4. Wardrobe with vintage draperies.

An old wardrobe with glass doors can also be turned into retro furniture. You will need a piece of cotton with a floral or checkered pattern, the length of the fabric is equal to the height of the doors, the width is approximately 4 widths of the glass insert per 1 door.

Cut the fabric into 2 pieces, tuck the edges at the top and bottom, then sew, leaving room for the line to thread through. Thread a fishing line (or elastic band) inside, drape (gather about one to two). Repeat this with the bottom. Make a loop from each free end of the fishing line.

Remove glass. On the back of the doors, attach furniture studs (4 for each door) so that the hat protrudes a little. Put on ready-made draperies, clinging to the studs with eyelets.

What else can be decorated in this way? More than 60 photo ideas for inspiration - (in our special issue on this topic).

5. Vase in a knitted case.

If you know how to knit, you can easily make such a pretty decoration for an ordinary glass vase. If not, sew a knitted cover from an old openwork jumper, you can even make it for a child. It looks especially impressive if the product is knitted from cotton.

For one vase, you only need one sleeve (the second can be used for another vase, including painting it in a different color). If there is a cuff, it must be cut off, trying not to dissolve the sleeve itself.

Cut off the sleeve a little longer than the height of the vase, remove any cut threads and finish the top edge so that the canvas does not unravel. Dissolve the threads from the rest of the sleeve and twist about a dozen flagella from them with a knot at the end. Sew the finished flagella to the upper edge of the cover and put the cover on the vase.

If you want to up the retro charm, find a white jumper and color the finished case with tea, coffee or cocoa. You get a delightful, truly vintage shade - "ecru" or "ash pink".

6. Charming tray for romantics.

Surely you have seen movie characters who have everything “in style” - even a simple tray. What are you worse? You can also make such an accessory - and, believe me, it is very simple. All you need is a small metal tray.

Find a suitable vintage picture, print on plain paper. Or select any photo, and then in a graphic editor like Photoshop, turn it into grayscale or sepia mode, and then print it.

Attach a tray, circle, cut, glue - and admire! Ideal for storing beads and pendants, as well as your favorite perfume - on the dressing table.

If you want to use this serving tray, varnish the picture.

7. Vintage jewelry display.

Making such a bijou holder is also easy. You will need a wide wooden frame for the picture (old or new), a piece of plywood the size of the frame (for internal insertion) and the remains of wallpaper with floral motifs.

The frame can be pre-painted in a dark saturated color (blue, green, burgundy, eggplant), and then go over the paint a little with sandpaper to give it a “bloom of time”.

Stick the wallpaper on the plywood and reinforce the finished part on the back of the frame. On the outside, mark several points for hooks (in rows or randomly). Fasten small hooks or furniture studs so that they hold tightly to the plywood.

Hang up your decorations and place the display on a chest of drawers (or hang it on the wall with a picture holder).

8. Plate with a vintage rose.

You will need a simple white plate without a pattern (porcelain, ceramics) and paints for table glass-porcelain in the form of felt-tip pens.

Draw sketchy lines depicting a rose with a stem. Do not worry about the lack of artist talents - in this case, just such a slightly “naive” look is valued (as in children's drawings).

Important: even if earlier this plate was suitable for use in the microwave, now (after drawing the pattern) it cannot be placed there.

9. Candlestick from an egg stand.

And here you don't have to do anything at all. It is enough to find in a buffet (or at a flea market) an egg stand made of silver, glass or painted porcelain.

Turn it over, insert a tall candle, place the composition on a beautiful tray - and enjoy the serving detail in retro style.

10. "Blossoming" watering can-vase.

Take a metal watering can as a basis and paint it white. And then glue flower napkins on the sides and spout of the watering can.

Any flowers are suitable for vintage style, but spring ones are best: lilacs, tulips, lilies of the valley. From above, it is desirable to fix the drawing with a transparent varnish.

Important: this decor will not last long in the open air, so use the watering can only for watering indoor plants or as a flower vase.

Now you know how easy it is to create a vintage interior with your own hands. Let your creativity bring joy and admiration to the guests!

We make a retro lamp from improvised means.

Somehow I caught my eye a plastic bottle of an interesting shape. There was something familiar about her, somewhere I saw something like that…
I remembered, This was the glass of kerosene used a hundred years ago. And what if from this bottle, I thought? And here's what happened.

The neck of the bottle must be cut off, and a hole cut in the bottom.

We connect the base of the lamp and the glass with a ring made from a tin can, in which the bottom is cut out. The diameters of the glass, the base and the tin exactly matched and fit tightly on top of each other. There are also accidents.

It remains to screw the light bulb and assemble the lamp.

But with a light bulb for this lamp, the conversation is special. An ordinary incandescent lamp does not fit the genre, well, it does not look in a retro lamp.
I tried a low-power light bulb (with a long filament) - also not right, even when the lamp is running at full filament.

The ideal option is to use a special lamp of flickering light, which imitates the oscillating candle flame.

This is a decorative class neon lamp. You can’t buy them in a regular store, but you can buy and even order with delivery in online stores. The cost is wild. From 63 rubles Foton 3W E14 to 252 rubles Osram 3W E14. The Internet will tell you more about these lamps. Just type in Russian "Lamps of flickering light" and choose what you like. In the last photo - the connected lamp.

DIY jewelry. Master class with step by step photos

There were times when handmade jewelry was considered a sign of lack of taste or money. Now designers are developing collections of jewelry, which sometimes cost much more than jewelry made of precious metals with stones that are members of the "royal four"!

The day before, in one Internet boutique, I came across photographs of original jewelry, the basis of which were ordinary keys to door locks, old, battered. Looking at the price tags, she was stunned: not a single product costs less than fifty "green candy wrappers" (that is, dollars, as you probably guessed)!

These jewelry are original and unique. Each key has its own story! What forbidden rooms were locked by them once, what reliable outpost of secrets were they "in life"?!
I was inspired to the core!
I had to urgently examine the contents of the pantry and - oh, joy! - a couple of keys were found, one of which served as the basis for a necklace in the "combined vintage" style.
This publication presents two master classes: the first one will reflect the fruit of my nightly vigils on creating a necklace based on an old key, the other one on decorating a pin in a vintage style (it comes as a “trailer” due to ease of work).

Target: creating jewelry in the styles of "vintage" and "combined vintage" with your own hands.
Tasks:
- learn to create jewelry in certain areas of vintage style;
- improve the skills of working with the necessary materials and tools, observing the rules of safety;
- develop individual creative abilities, artistic taste;
- cultivate diligence, perseverance, accuracy in work.
Materials, tools:
old key,
decorative pin,
old chains of various alloys,

Decorative items (beads, pendants, other, beads),
details of old jewelry,
piece of gray linen
the rest of the lace
glue "Moment Crystal",
monofilament, metallic gold thread, sewing needle,
bow from an old hairpin,
scissors, pliers, round nose pliers, wire cutters.
Working process:
Let's start with something simpler. We decorate the pin in the style of "vintage".

We will prepare the necessary materials and tools. Not everything will fit. Often, when doing such work, you do not know what the final result will be.

Take a ring from an old earring, since it has a hole in it.

With the help of tools, we will attach the links of the old chain to the ringlet.

Inside the ring we will place a decorative coin (then it will be replaced by another detail).

Attach the details to the non-working part of the pin.

At the opposite end of the pin, place a double piece of a voluminous heart and a bead, attaching the other end of the chain to them.

Now, decor options follow one after another: either "pearl + bead" pendants, or beads - pendants. We choose which details are more consistent with the selected style.

Final result:

Advice on wearing such a pin: in the summer it is not at all necessary to pin it directly on the fabric of the clothes in order to avoid its deformation, you can throw it over the shoulder strap - why not?! In winter, you can pin a brooch by carefully threading it through the fibers of a sweater, for example.

Now let's start creating a necklace in the style of "combined vintage" (this style takes place when some details were produced no later than the end of the 80s of the 20th century) based on the key, fortunately, as a result of a long and nervous search in the "grandmother's chest" by me truly vintage details were found, such as a chain made of some kind of alloy, a vintage dragonfly pendant and a piece of gray linen - all this dates back to the beginning of the 80s of the last century.

In the photo, in addition to the above, there are details that were not useful.

The key, which cannot be called exclusive, is wrapped in a spiral with a strip of linen fabric and fixed with Moment Crystal glue.

We securely attach the chain to the key, as shown in the photo.

Sew a piece of lace with a metallic thread to a linen strip encircling the key.

Add some beads.

The rest is a matter of technique. We fix the remains of beads, coins and other details with the help of tools based on our key.

Someone searches and finds vintage “trophies” for a long time, and creative individuals prefer to create them with their own hands. From old things, lace, as well as fabrics with a suitable pattern, the one that was in fashion several decades ago.

What is "vintage"?

The word came to us from winemaking: the so-called elite wines made in years when the grapes had excellent taste. The longer the wine is aged, the better, more valuable and more expensive it is. In relation to things, these are old household items that have lived a long life and are well preserved. In a word, a dress that has lain for a century in a grandmother's chest and is not eaten by moths can be safely called vintage.

An antique is considered a thing that is at least half a century old. For example, a book published before 1962, that is, 50 years ago, can be considered a rarity. Of course, the state of the copy, the publisher, and, finally, the content of the book are taken into account. For example, books on home economics and cookery published in Stalin's times are now highly valued.

In a word, in order to find curious and useful things, sometimes it is enough to make an audit in your own house: among grandma's and grandfather's things, which we sometimes dismissively call rubbish.
