What can be done from fiberboard with your own hands. Arches made of fiberboard or chipboard: simple and cheap. Do-it-yourself box made of fiberboard

One of the most inexpensive building and furniture materials. Its use is justified where it is necessary to level the surface or prepare it for decoration. And also where you need to make the back wall and bottom of a furniture cabinet, chest of drawers or upholstered furniture. Pressed wood has been used for more than a decade for the interior of passenger cars. And this list is far from complete.

The main advantages of fiberboard, which allow it to be actively used in construction, are the resistance of dimensions over time to deformation. True, provided that fiberboard does not come into contact with water. The second advantage of the material is its environmental friendliness.

Particularly harmful substances are not used. At least two of these significant qualities make it possible to actively use fiberboard in construction, furniture production, and other sectors of the economy.

All Soviet radios, some radios and radios, as well as televisions, had cases made of fiberboard.

Civil and industrial construction has found the use of fiberboard as a material for:

  • floor insulation;
  • sound insulation of partitions;
  • thermal insulation of ventilation ducts, technical boxes, as well as rooms where “clear sound” is required (television studios, cinema halls);
  • creating formwork when pouring reinforced concrete structures of small volume;
  • door panels;
  • facing works with walls;
  • production of built-in and cabinet furniture;
  • interior decoration of passenger cars of trains, metro, trams;
  • roughing and sometimes even finishing floors;
  • panels of electrical panels.

One of the most common options for using fiberboard for cladding is the creation of arched structures, as well as wall decoration.

The photo shows where fiberboard can be used

Wall panels

Facing the space with materials that can not only imitate stone, brick, wood, but also perfectly cover all the imperfections of the walls, are easy to maintain and are relatively inexpensive, can be said to have become a revolution in the construction industry. Fiberboard wall panels can be placed horizontally, vertically, at an angle.

And even a person who is not experienced in construction can work with them. Manufacturers make special fiberboard panels, one side of which has a special decorative coating. MDF, as a type of fiberboard, leads among wall panels in terms of quality and price.

Sheet panels made of fiberboard are similar to plywood, only one of the sides has a decorative pattern. For the kitchen, this can be a smooth or embossed texture. The standard length of such a panel is 3 meters, but the thickness ranges from 3 to 6 millimeters.

All varieties of fiberboard do not require special care. But their main problem is the fear of moisture. That is why it is better not to make wall panels near the kitchen sink from fiberboard. Although in any other place in the kitchen they will be quite appropriate.

The appearance of the panels is quite original, the installation is simple, there are few joints. The average price of one square meter is 600 rubles. Such panels can last at least one decade. But provided that there is no direct contact with water, and the percentage of humidity in the kitchen does not exceed the norm.

Do-it-yourself fiberboard arch

One of the positive properties of fiberboard - the ability to bend, combined with even more excellent quality - the ability to keep the shape, allows you to actively use this material for the construction of arches.

The main conditions for a quality design:

  • Precise measurement of all details.
  • Drawing up a drawing.
  • The presence of good tools that will allow you to cut the necessary elements evenly.
  • Possibility to have an assistant during installation.

It is possible to bend the fiberboard with an arc so that it does not burst and does not have cracks, if you first apply a thick layer of PVA glue to the surface. Once absorbed, it will give the fiberboard the necessary elasticity.

Cut and assemble the entire frame, for example, the legs (the base of the arch, its lower part) need to be on the floor. Then insert all the elements into the prepared opening.

It should go like this:

  • cut an aluminum profile and bend it exactly in the shape of an arc from fiberboard;
  • make a frame from a profile around the opening;
  • attach the elements of the arch from fiberboard with a screwdriver.

If the arch is made on a draft and its further cladding, painting, for example, is expected, then all joints must be glued with reinforced mesh or construction tape. Now the finished arch can be decorated.

When fiberboard is laminated, you need to carefully cut out the parts and mount them no less carefully. Otherwise, all the irregularities will be noticeable.

Fiberboard arches are able to decorate the space, hide the flaws of the doorway. At the same time, such a design will cost minimal money, and it can be completed in record time.

Ceiling

The most important thing that a person who decides to sheathe his ceiling with a sheet of fiberboard should remember is the fairly large weight of the structure. One sheet of high-density fibreboard weighs at least 30 kilograms. Therefore, in order for such a ceiling to hold tightly and not create a danger, it is worth choosing fiberboard of minimum density and creating a good frame on which to fix the sheets according to all the rules.

It is necessary to make a frame around the perimeter of the ceiling. It can be made of metal or wooden slats. It is better to make a step between the transverse slats no more than 30-35 centimeters. It is necessary to fasten the fiberboard sheets with a screwdriver, connecting them into a rigid joint. Fiberboard can be glued pointwise to the insulation or concrete ceiling, for example, with liquid nails.

All this is quite simple to do with your own hands. The installation of fiberboard on the ceiling itself is very similar to working with drywall, but at a price it is cheaper. And the quality of such a ceiling is not worse.

The indisputable advantages of a ceiling made of fiberboard sheets:

  • Minimum price.
  • Fast installation.
  • Durability.
  • Surface leveling.
  • Possibility of sheets to perform construction in several levels.

The finished ceiling can be painted, more than once during the entire period of operation, or wallpaper can be pasted on it. This can be done multiple times.

The ceiling made of fiberboard is practical, when decorating it will be beautiful and modern. If water does not get on it (neighbors will flood or heating pipes will break), then it can last for a decade.

DIY floor

Theoretically, a whole room can be made from fiberboard. It is quite suitable for creating walls (it is only necessary that they are double and good soundproofing material is laid between them). Fiberboard will serve perfectly as a ceiling, it is also appropriate for the floor.

For the subfloor, a fiberboard must be chosen at least 6 millimeters thick, high density and not ennobled.

Fiberboards can even be laid on an existing wooden floor, the main thing is that there are no large differences in height, otherwise the fiberboard will simply crack. If you make such a floor initially, then you will need lags. Across them, you can lay sheets of fiberboard. Or you can make a wooden draft floor from a non-edged board, and lay fiberboard on top of it.

The surface on which the fibreboard will be laid must be treated. For a tree, for example, hot drying oil is suitable.

If laying sheets on an old wooden coating, it is necessary to close up all holes and large cracks in it. Such preparation will extend the life of the finished floor.

Each fiberboard must be attached around the perimeter. It is important that the finished surface is even. On top of it, you can put any coating. Fiberboard is suitable even for linoleum and ceramic tiles.

It is quite possible to make a floor from fiberboard on your own, even without assistants. The work won't take long. The quality of such a subfloor will be quite high, and the price will be small.

Fiberboard is a universal building material, however, in order to perform high-quality installation, some subtleties must be observed.

How to lay fiberboard on an old wooden floor can be seen in the video:

Features of working with fiberboard

So, you have to place the fiberboard on the ceiling, walls or floor.

There are such options for attaching sheets to frames, logs or the old floor:

  • Screw fastening. Each sheet is screwed to the base with a distance between fasteners of at least 5-6 centimeters.
  • Gluing sheets. Special glue or liquid nails are applied to the underside of the fiberboard sheet and to the base of the floor. The manufacturer does not indicate that the canvas should be left under pressure. It is only said that 20 minutes will be enough for the sheets to be considered glued thoroughly. This mounting method is only suitable for mounting fiberboard on a wooden base.

Between themselves, fiberboard sheets can be glued together or a special connecting profile can be used. And if such a floor is mounted under linoleum, it is best to connect all its elements with construction tape or reinforcing mesh. If the installation was carried out inaccurately, the places of chips and other errors must be puttied. It is important to make a flat surface.

Gluing wallpaper on the ceiling and walls made of fiberboard is no more difficult than on concrete. But the surface needs pre-treatment.

So, you need:

  • Prime fiberboard once, allow the mixture to dry;
  • putty the surface, eliminate all irregularities;
  • glue white wallpaper paper, let it dry;
  • stick wallpaper.

This method will allow you to change the wallpaper over time without damaging the texture of the fiberboard. By the way, if you paint it correctly, then this procedure can be repeated several more times.

You need to paint fiberboard like this:

  • Clean the surface.
  • Apply a coat of alkyd primer. It is important that its temperature is at least 50°C and only one coat is applied. The primer is poorly absorbed, and it forms a film on the surface of the fiberboard.
  • After the primer has dried, paint the fiberboard with a roller or spray gun. It is inconvenient to do this with a brush, since the texture of the fiberboard is not uniform. You can paint the prepared fiberboard with any paint.

Cutting or sawing boards with a hacksaw is quite difficult, as it is difficult to achieve perfect evenness of the cut. Therefore, you need to do this with an electric jigsaw. True, certain skills are needed to work with it, but by practicing on pieces of fiberboard and drawing sheets, you can achieve consistently good results.

The video will tell about the technology for convenient cutting of large-format fiberboard sheets:

Thus, working with this building material, which is based on wood, is quite simple, the main thing is to follow the recommendations and then the final result of the construction will please for a long time.

Furniture

In the production of furniture, fiberboard is given almost a key position. This material is necessary for the back walls of wardrobes. The size of the sheets for these purposes is usually used standard and the thinnest in thickness. In the laminated version, even the role of doors in these cabinets is intended for him. The bottom of drawers in chests of drawers is also made from fiberboard.

In the furniture industry, not a single version of cabinet products can do without fiberboard. Of the shortcomings, it can only be noted that an overly crowded cabinet with its contents can squeeze the back wall out of the fiberboard. However, it can be easily nailed or replaced with a new one. The advantages include ease of installation, low cost and practicality of the material.

Fiberboard, which has been known to mankind for more than a century and a half, still has no analogues that can replace it. The ratio of valuable qualities with accessibility makes fiberboard one of the universal materials, which are convenient to use in construction and simply when creating furniture.

Let's first briefly recall what a fiberboard (MDF) is. It consists of pieces of wood impregnated with a special adhesive and pressed under high pressure and at high temperature. This production technology is typical for all types of fiberboard. Each specific type differs in density, impregnation materials and surface grinding (drawing). In this article, we will consider such an application of this material as a fiberboard ceiling finish. In order to make ceilings from fiberboard with your own hands, you do not need to have any special skills or special knowledge.

For each room you need to select the appropriate type of material. For a living room, you can take soft grades of fiberboard, which will better let air through, in other words, “breathable”. To sheathe a fiberboard ceiling in rooms with high humidity, it is recommended to order sheets of increased density (they absorb moisture much less) and impregnated with a special antifungal solution that will prevent the appearance.

Some "specialists" practically do not pay attention to the mass of the wood fiber board, and it sometimes reaches 30 kg. Imagine what kind of load is created on the ceiling, sheathed with such "weightless" fiberboards! Therefore, we remind you once again - pay attention to the brand of the plate: the lower the density, the lighter the plate. It should be noted that the density of the material is directly proportional to the degree of moisture resistance and strength.

Fiberboard ceiling cladding technology

Let's look at how to sheathe a fiberboard ceiling. The plating process is divided into two important stages:

So, you have completed the preparatory work and purchased fiberboard sheets. They must be laid on a flat surface and these sheets should be left in the room in which the fiberboard ceiling will be sheathed for about a day or two in order to equalize the temperature and humidity of the sheets with the microclimate in the room.

Installation work is best done with two people - this is the best option. It’s not worth doing the work alone - you can break the sheet or the fiberboard sheet will fall on you or along with you.

Mounting methods

For fixing to the crate, you can use building brackets (in the case of mounting on a wooden beam and using a construction stapler), nails or self-tapping screws. Please note that in the latter case, you need to countersink each "breakdown" (make a recess under the hat). Ways of fastening to the ceiling depend on the density of the sheet. We remember that the denser the fiberboard sheet, the heavier it is, and, accordingly, the stronger materials for fastening. Protruding iron from staples or nails must be carefully puttied, because over time these iron parts will rust and show through paint or wallpaper.

The procedure for fixing a fiberboard sheet

First you need to fix the sheet according to the guide rails. To do this, the sheet must be lifted, pressed against the guide profiles and fixed with several fasteners along the edges of the sheet. An important detail: this is a pre-fix. Therefore, do not use staples for this. Fix the sheets with long nails or thin screws that will protrude from the fiberboard. That is, do not completely hammer them, so that you can then painlessly pull them out. The sheet fixed in this way is checked with a rope, which is pulled across the entire room. If the sheet is unevenly attached, then it is relatively easy to pull out the nails and trim it.

Now we move on to fixing the aligned sheet. To finally nail the sheet to the ceiling, you need to start from one edge with a step of 15 cm. In this way, we gradually go through the entire sheet, and there will be no bulges on the material.

Finishing work:

Finally, you have finished mounting the fiberboard ceiling, everything turned out smoothly and without cracks. Now, with a clear conscience, we proceed to the finishing work.

Fiberboard ceiling, look at the video:

In conclusion, we will take a closer look at the third option, how to paint fiberboard on the ceiling with paint.

If you do not know how to paint the fiberboard on the ceiling, then we recommend using a foam roller. It will paint over the microrelief of the surface well, evenly distribute the paint and the hairs will not leave it. If you buy a fur roller, then there is no guarantee of its quality. In addition, the fur roller leaves a micro-pattern of hairs, which does not always resolve on the ceiling, but, on the contrary, becomes more convex and noticeable under the force of gravity. Use the special telescopic handle and it will be easier for you to work.

If sawing out various decorative elements, wood burning or carving has become your new hobby, then our advice would be to start with a material such as plywood.

There are several significant reasons for this:

Plywood is easy to work with.

If you have a good tool in your hands, and you start with small figurines, then making them will take you only a couple of hours.

The material is universal in use, so you can literally make anything you want from it: furniture, toys, small decorative elements.

All this can be a wonderful addition to the interior of your home.

Features of working with the material

What is a plywood sheet. It consists of several sheets of veneer at once, which are interconnected with glue.

Important: plywood can be of different types: based on beech, birch, pine.

Not only the quality of the finished product, but even its structure and color depends on which sheet you choose.

If you are going to cut out various figures with a jigsaw, then you need to choose the highest quality varieties of plywood.

They are distinguished by their special strength, which ensures that the plywood does not crack, spoiling the entire appearance of the product at the most unpredictable moment.

If you are going to start work immediately, immediately on the day of purchase, then choose only dry sheets of wood.

They will not break a jigsaw file every 10 minutes.

To work with plywood, you will need to acquire a number of tools.

In principle, they are always the same for all types of products, so only a one-time investment is required:

  • jigsaw
  • Jigsaw files
  • Hand or electric drill
  • Ruler
  • grinding machine
  • Burner.

Framework

If you want to beautifully decorate your home or present an original gift to someone close to you, make a plywood frame with your own hands.

The preparation process will not take you much time, because you only need to get the necessary materials.

Note!

They are standard for all cases, and we have already mentioned them before.

We will offer you workshops on light plywood crafts. You can make both a regular straight frame and carve various patterns and figures on it.

First you need to make a template, and after that you can cut it out, trace the outlines with a pencil on plywood and start the manufacturing process.

This stage is not only the most responsible, but also the most exciting. If you put a piece of your soul into the work, everything will definitely work out. The finished structure must be varnished. Ready!

doll furniture

This task will be a real test for parents.

Note!

The so-called test of acquired design skills.

A feature of the creation of doll furniture is that children absolutely do not tolerate falsehood.

If they see that the furniture has not been worked out in detail, and instead of a stove for your favorite doll, you brought an ordinary rectangular bar, then you simply cannot avoid serious insults and childish disappointments.

The second feature of making such crafts from plywood using a jigsaw is that all this furniture must be carefully worked out with sandpaper or a grinder.

Your child will constantly be in contact with these self-made toys, and in the case of poorly finished edges, they may get hurt.

Note!

Well, the last feature of plywood and home crafts is that the materials for such furniture must be absolutely non-toxic and normal for constant contact with the child, because he can drag it into his mouth or take it to bed with him.

This is not a simple application or paper craft, so you need to take it seriously, following a whole list of actions that need to be completed.

Performing work from plywood

Just as simple furniture is made in detail, and then assembled into one piece of furniture, do-it-yourself plywood crafts should be done separately.

To do this, first of all, prepare special drawings of plywood crafts, on which you specify the dimensions of all parts and their fastenings.

Take the finished plywood sheet and attach the paper part template to it.

Circle the part with a pencil and cut along the contour with a jigsaw.

After that, each detail must be cleaned with sandpaper or a grinder, and only then must the piece of furniture be assembled.

When you're done with the whole set, open it up with varnish.

Below are different options and photos of plywood crafts. Choose the one you like.

Do-it-yourself box made of fiberboard

There are so many things that have absolutely nowhere to put, be it jewelry or handicraft supplies. There will always be something that requires separate storage. So, for such purposes, you can independently make a fibreboard box with your own hands.

To create it, we need the following materials:

Fiberboard or thick cardboard (thickness 3 mm);
100% cotton in two or three colors;
two types of glue Moment "Crystal" and PVA;
brush;
masking tape;
whatman;
ruler;
pencil;
scissors;
stack.

Do-it-yourself box made of fiberboard.

To begin with, we will cut out blanks for a box of a certain size from fiberboard (or cardboard). The box consists of two parts: the base - the bottom, the side wall and the lid; compartment of the box.

Let's start with the compartment where everything will be stored. We put the base measuring 10x15 cm on the table and first glue the sides 15 cm long on the Moment glue. It is necessary to squeeze the two sides for a few seconds to firmly fix the wall. Next, glue the two opposite sides.

All internal and external corners must be glued with masking tape. It is important to form right angles between the walls using a stack.

In order to prevent the dark color of fiberboard from showing through the fabric, it is necessary to glue the outer walls and the outer side of the base with whatman paper. Whatman paper is cut to the size of the walls and PVA glue is applied in a very thin layer. The surface is smoothed with a stack.

We proceed to pasting with a cloth all parts of the box. We cut a strip of fabric measuring 7x39 cm. Apply glue to the side 10.6 cm long and glue it to the fabric, leaving an allowance, which we glue to the adjacent wall. Thus, we glue the remaining sides further. The wall without fabric will be back and it will not be visible. The stack will help get rid of irregularities on the walls.

We cut off the corners from all sides at an acute angle and glue the allowances on adjacent walls. We do the same at the top of the box.

Let's cut the fabric with a size of 6x17 cm. Let's fold the allowances of 1 cm on both sides. It will turn out a spine 6x15 cm in size. We glue one half of it to the wall, with allowances inside. Press well.

We glue three blanks for the base of the box to the fabric with the glued side down so that there is a distance of 0.5 cm between them. Leave allowances on all sides. We cut off the corners with an allowance of 2-3 mm, at a fairly sharp angle and glue it.

We glue the workpiece to the bottom in the center (exactly along the edge) and wall to wall (the edges must match) on the “Moment” glue. Glue the remaining half of the spine to the lid, capturing all sides.

We cut out two blanks from the drawing paper according to the size of the bottom. Glue them to the fabric, leaving allowances and cutting off the corners. In one blank, allowances must be glued.

We glue the workpiece with free allowances to the bottom. We form corners. We fix the workpiece with glued allowances on the inside of the lid.

We cut blanks from whatman paper for the inner walls of the box. First you need to attach them to the walls so that they do not bend and lie flat. The blanks must be 2 mm smaller on all sides than the wall size. On blanks 15 cm long, we leave side allowances and glue them first, and then completely glued blanks 10.6 cm long. All walls must be well fixed and smoothed.
