Jurisprudence with in-depth study of foreign languages. International legal profile. Competencies and benefits

The International Law Institute is a structural link of the O.E. Kutafin (MGYuA) (hereinafter referred to as the University), which has its own history.

In 2000, as an experiment, in-depth study of private international law and two foreign languages was introduced in one of the study groups of the University.

In view of the success of the experiment, the Department of International Economic and Financial Law was established in 2002 for full-time education.

On April 1, 2005, the Department was transformed into an independent structural subdivision of the University - the Institute of Private International Law, which, in connection with the opening of the international legal training profile on January 31, 2011, was renamed the International Law Institute.

The International Law Institute trains bachelors in the direction of "Jurisprudence" in full-time education. The term of study is 4 years.

The peculiarity of the curriculum for training in the international legal profile is that already from the first year students are taught international legal disciplines that are preparatory to the disciplines of the profile in senior years - "Introduction to the profession of an international lawyer", "Judicial systems of the Russian Federation and foreign countries", etc.

In addition, students of the International Law Institute have the opportunity to choose subjects for in-depth study:

At the Department of International (Public) Law - "Law of International Treaties", "International Maritime Law", "Customs Law", "International Organizations and Conferences", "International Criminal Law", "Diplomatic Protocol and Etiquette", etc.;

In the Department of Private International Law - "Cross-border commercial contracts", "Industrial property in private international law", "Copyright in private international law", "Inheritance in private international law", "Cross-border transportation", "Legal regulation of foreign investment" and others;

At the Department of Integration and European Law - "Migration law of the European Union and mechanisms for the protection of human rights in Europe", "Procedural law of the European Union", "Commercial law of the European Union", etc.

Studying at the International Law Institute is advisable for those who see themselves as a future lawyer working in state bodies for external relations, international organizations, enterprises with foreign participation, enterprises engaged in foreign economic activity both in Russia and abroad.

It is worth emphasizing that at the University named after O.E. Kutafin (Moscow State Law Academy), the choice of an international legal profile for full-time education is possible only at the International Law Institute.

It should also be noted that in addition to the disciplines of the profile, from the very beginning of their studies, students can choose one or more additional educational programs for in-depth study of a foreign language: English, French, German, Spanish - with additional qualifications - "Translator in the field of professional communication ".

The learning process at the International Law Institute is practice-oriented. Students practice in courts, organizations and institutions whose activities correlate with the training profile: the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, the International Commercial Arbitration Court, etc.

In addition to participating in the process provided for by the curriculum, students of the International Law Institute have many other opportunities for professional development, for example, the possibility of internships in the countries of the foreign language being studied - France, Germany, England, Spain, Holland, Switzerland, etc.

Students of the International Law Institute take part in Russian and international scientific and practical events - competitions, round tables, business games (for example, in the Philip Jessup competition, an intellectual competition to build the best model of the United Nations and the European Union, etc.). Students participate in research work - they make presentations at conferences and other events held by the Student Scientific Society of the University named after O.E. Kutafin (MSUA).

After successfully mastering the educational program of the bachelor's degree, graduates can continue their studies at the next level of education - the master's program.

In the 2018-2019 academic year, the International Law Institute is recruiting students for the following master's programs:

We study to be a lawyer with knowledge of foreign languages

In our age of globalization and active intercultural communication, it is important not only to be able to communicate in a foreign language, but also to speak it at the level required in a professional environment. Sometimes a successful career requires knowledge of several foreign languages. It used to be possible to obtain the language knowledge and skills necessary for a professional in universities within the framework of international and foreign economic specializations. With the introduction of a two-stage system of higher education and the reduction of the period of study at the first stage of a bachelor's degree to four years, it has become much more difficult to maintain high standards in the training of international specialists. Using the example of the Jurisprudence field of study, we analyzed how the volume of teaching foreign languages for bachelors in Moscow institutes has changed.

Many universities have generally abandoned the international legal profile of the Bachelor of Laws. Among who have retained this profile of study, which involves in-depth study of two foreign languages (6-8 hours per week) in the curriculum: VAVT, IMTP, MNEPU, RosNOU. In other institutions, the international profile is supported by in-depth study of the main foreign language (most often English) for four years of study, and the study of a second foreign language and Latin is offered as electives. Even more often, instead of in-depth study of a foreign language, training is introduced according to a standard program (2 hours a week), while in-depth study is offered as part of additional and optional programs.

It is possible to note the universities that prepare bachelors of jurisprudence in general, but, having departments and institutes of international law, retain the international specifics of legal education, including a high level of teaching foreign languages. Moscow universities such as MGIMO, Moscow State Law Academy, Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, National Research University Higher School of Economics provide in-depth specialized training for future lawyers to work in a foreign-language professional environment.

A professional foreign language has remained in the curricula of some universities only as part of a variable (optional) part, electives, or is offered as part of additional language programs in legal translation, preparation of legal documentation in English, infocommunication resources in legal translation, business English, the culture of professional speech , regional studies, the study of legal terminology, etc.

The decrease in the level of language knowledge of future international lawyers, apparently, has led to the fact that in rare universities, curricula contain disciplines taught in foreign languages. True, undergraduate students still retain lectures by foreign teachers, internships and short-term training programs in well-known foreign law schools, internships in the country of the language being studied, participation in international competitions and conferences in the field of international law.

We did not find a single joint or international bachelor's degree program in law at Moscow institutes. On the other hand, studying at the second stage, in the magistracy, involves a large selection of international programs, both at Russian universities and in partnership with foreign colleagues. In the course of studying at the magistracy in the field of international law, the study of foreign languages continues, there is a further improvement of professional language skills - the ability to freely navigate legal texts, make messages and conduct a conversation on professional topics, and draw up legal documents.

Higher legal education

Law universities in Moscow are considered to be among the most prestigious institutions of higher education. A diploma from a prestigious law school will ensure good employment and wages. But along with these advantages, legal education also has a number of disadvantages.

Law schools, institutes, universities, academies are overcrowded, and there is a huge competition for recruitment. In addition, do not forget about "our" who will take the lion's share of budget places. You have to rely only on paid education, and the prices for it are constantly growing. The situation is saved by non-state universities. Getting there is much easier, and the quality of education is on par with the best state institutions. The only disadvantage of private law universities is the prestige of the diploma.

It is worth considering foreign educational institutions to study the specialty of jurisprudence. MBA will provide you with knowledge and a diploma that will be quoted not only in Russia, but all over the world. Foreign law schools provide better education in the field of international relations and law. Only the requirement for English at a European university will be at the level of a foreign language in Moscow.

What is better quality of education or elite crust can be argued indefinitely. A diploma is a chance to find a job, and a quality education is a guarantee of career advancement. With a good diploma, it is easier to get a job, but building a career without knowledge is unlikely to succeed.

State law schools have another very important advantage: the military department. The army will take a year of your life, during which your knowledge may be lost or become irrelevant. This issue is acute for young men who want to connect their future with jurisprudence.

When applying, many people pay attention to the ratings of law schools. But the rankings are based on a large number of indicators that are not always important for students, for example: the number of foreign students is taken into account. For a student, it makes no difference whether a student from Kursk or Warsaw sits with him at his desk. But such statistics can lift the university higher in the rating list. But are employers always familiar with different ratings? Much more important is the very fact of having a diploma from a well-known educational institution. Few people know what place he occupies in the QS ranking. It will be much more important for you who will train you and in what conditions you will have to accumulate a store of knowledge.

An applicant, before entering a law school, should seriously think: does he really want to work in this area? There is a lot of competition not only for admission to the institute, it also persists in employment. The way out can be admission to an industry university at the Faculty of Law. A good example is the Russian State University of Oil and Gas. THEM. Gubkin. This state university trains specialists in the oil and gas sector, which, in addition to engineers, needs lawyers and economists. Kerosene supplies trained personnel. After graduating from this university, you will be able to find a job in the oil and gas or chemical sector. But you will not be able to get a job in another industry without work experience.
