The urgency of the problem.

Along with a new Teflon-coated pan, a problem appeared in our house. After all, when preparing a number of dishes, you can not do without shoulder blades. They can be metal or wood. The most suitable for a Teflon-coated pan is a wooden spatula, which we did not have.

Idea development.

D
wooden spatulas and forks can have different shapes (Fig. 1, 2). There are more complex options, but I need to choose a product for manufacturing that would be easy to use and could be made at home. I chose the spatula shown in Figure 1 and the fork shown in Figure 2. They have a fairly simple shape, but at the same time they look original. And if you make the same spatula and fork, only a few smaller sizes, then they are also used for table setting.

The choice of material.

A blank for kitchen spatulas and forks can be obtained by splitting a log into chocks. In this case, the wood fibers remain intact, so that the products are durable. But you can use a board of appropriate thickness from hardwood of medium density (alder, birch, beech, maple). The timber harvest must have the following dimensions:

300x50x12 mm.

Choice of tools.

To work, I need the following tools:

  1. Flat chisel 15 mm wide

    Drills: Ø 8, 12mm.

    Rotate.

  2. Round file.

    Flat file.

    Medium grit sandpaper.

I I showed my mother the spatula and fork I made, and she liked them very much. She appreciated the convenience of working with them, the optimality of their sizes.

Making a wooden carved kitchen spatula "Primrose"

Since ancient times, man has been decorating his house, household items, kitchen utensils!
Distaffs, dishes, spoons were decorated not only with paintings, but also with carvings!
Carved wooden handmade kitchen spatula will help you prepare delicious healthy food and will serve as a decoration for your home!

To make a carved kitchen spatula, we take a linden board 70 mm wide, 20 mm thick, 300 mm long, cut the ends into a cone, bring one end of the workpiece (the handle of the spatula) to 30 mm, and leave the other wide.
We plan the flat part of the workpiece, cut off the wide part (blade) up to 6 mm. leaving the narrow part of the workpiece (handle) - 20 mm.
We got a lime blank (baklusha) for making a carved kitchen spatula!

We make markings: mark the center along the length of the blade and mark the border of the handle and blade.

With the help of any suitable circle, we denote a smooth transition from the blade to the handle and mark the handle of the blade.

For the manufacture of such a simple product, I do not consider it appropriate to use a power tool (jigsaw, drill). Armed with a sharp semicircular chisel of a suitable size, with a comfortable handle, let's start woodcarving!
First, we select, marked with a pencil, a smooth transition from the blade to the handle, then turn the workpiece over to the end, fix it, cut off the excess with a flat chisel.
On the other side of the workpiece, we do the same.

If you want to hang a spatula, make a through hole with a semicircular chisel of a suitable size.

With a semicircular chisel, at an angle, from the center marked with a pencil, we begin to cut.

Carefully chamfer from the shoulder of the shoulder blade to the first notch.

With a corner, cutting the edge of the handle, we divide the drawing and make the handle curly.

We cut the edge with a straight chisel and an oblique knife, making the pattern more embossed.

From the center of the handle, cut the sheet with a corner, separating it from each other.

Round the end of the handle with a semicircular chisel.

Cut out four petals with a semicircular chisel. We separate them from each other by a corner.

With a semicircular chisel, we chamfer the tip of the handle. From the outside, we separate the petals with a corner.

We sharpen the end of the blade with a straight wide chisel and grind it.

We have a wonderful carved kitchen spatula. Beloved to the delight and guests to surprise.

A wooden spatula for the kitchen is the simplest craft that even a child can master. Personally, I carve it in ten minutes, although I use some machines. To make it, you need a plank of any wood. I saw planks from a bar, but I can tell you where you can get such planks for free: these are wooden boxes for vegetables, which are thrown away in large quantities in any vegetable markets, they are mainly knocked together from beech planks, which are just the width suitable for making wooden shoulder blades.

First, we draw a sketch of the blade on the board:

And we cut it along the contour with a jigsaw (regular or electric). I drink on a circular saw, although it is dangerous for beginners! You can be left without a finger.

Now we give the shoulder blade its final shape, rounding off the corners and removing the excess. It is very convenient to do this on a lathe using special nozzles from sandpaper:

We sharpen the end of the blade:

We grind everything with fine sandpaper. Everything! The blade is ready!

You can decorate it with burning and cover with oil, such as linen.

Wood is a great material for a spatula in the kitchen and has many advantages. It remains only to choose the right shape and type of wood so that the blade serves for a long time.

The variety of kitchen utensils is simply amazing: every year there are new appliances made from modern and technologically advanced materials. Nevertheless, many housewives remain faithful to traditional household items - simple, familiar and safe. And the point here is not at all nostalgia or a craving for origins, but the fact that many of the utensils of our grandmothers and great-grandmothers turn out to be much more convenient and functional than their current counterparts. A simple example is a wooden spatula, which can be used to stir dressings and sauces, turn over pieces of meat or fish, pancakes and pancakes without burning your hands, and even easily lay out pieces of cakes or pastries at the festive table.

In addition to such a kind of multifunctionality, wooden utensils have other features for which home cooks love it so much.

Advantages and disadvantages

We practically do not think about the advantages of wood products for the kitchen - we just use them with pleasure. But after all, every housewife will be pleased to know that her tools are safe and will never spoil a signature dish. Here are a few reasons "for" the use of natural utensils:

  • When using a wooden spatula during cooking, there is no chance of getting burned, because wood has low heat conductivity, and unlike metal, it does not heat up.
  • Such utensils do not scratch dishes, because wood is in a sense a pliable and soft material. This makes it possible to use it for cooking in pots and pans with non-stick and Teflon coating.
  • Environmental friendliness - unlike plastic and other newfangled materials, the natural array does not emit toxins and does not affect the taste of dishes. True, for this you will need to purchase a spatula, which was definitely not treated with any impregnations in production.
  • Large selection of shapes, sizes and designs. You can buy carved or painted shoulder blades, decorated with scorched ornaments, with or without slots.
  • Low cost, not to mention the fact that such a little thing can be made with your own hands from a small plank - it will turn out almost for nothing.

Wood products are considered hypoallergenic and safe for human health.

However, products made from natural materials also have their drawbacks. For example, such blades absorb odors, stain with certain products, and can warp and even crack from prolonged exposure to water. Yes, they darken over time. Although these disadvantages are easy to eliminate. So that the spatula does not absorb moisture, after washing it must be wiped dry, to protect it from smoldering or fire, it must be stored away from open flames. And for a longer time, simple rules of care will help to preserve the attractive appearance of your favorite instrument.

Features of care

To protect a wooden spatula from cracks, before the first use, it must be lubricated with vaseline oil and left for 5-10 minutes in the oven at a temperature of +180 ° C. Be careful: this tip is not suitable for bamboo or lacquered items. In general, from time to time arrange your natural utensils with “oil rubdowns” - this will protect them from moisture and prevent cracking.

During operation, the cleanliness of wooden utensils should also be maintained. After preparing or serving food, immediately rinse the spatula under running water. If the food dries on its rough surface, it will be possible to remove it without damage only after a long soak, which is also not good for such a tool.

Also, modern household chemicals should not be used to wash wooden spatulas. Replace these products with laundry soap, soda or lemon. The latter will not only clean and disinfect the surface, but also give the wood a pleasant aroma.

Hydrogen peroxide will help lighten a wooden spatula that has darkened from time to time. You just need to apply it on a cotton pad and wipe the surface of the product, and after 2-5 minutes rinse it in warm water and dry it.

Let's choose!

First of all, you should ask what kind of wood the blade is made from. Not only its appearance will depend on this, but also the service life in your kitchen.

The leader here is juniper. It has a very dense structure and almost does not absorb moisture. In addition, juniper wood has antiseptic properties and a beautiful aroma. It is these blades that are the most durable. This is followed by bamboo - usually it comes with factory impregnation, so it does not require oiling and roasting in the oven. The last place is occupied by hardwoods (birch, beech, alder, walnut, etc.) - they are less durable.

Now it remains to choose only the shape and size of the spatula - depending on how you will use it. There are plenty of options here. On the market you can find rectangular, oval and conical tools, products with holes, as well as models in the form of a shallow spoon or fork with a long handle.

  • A narrow spatula is convenient to lay out pieces of cake or other desserts.
  • Wide - turn fish or meatballs in a pan, cook roast.
  • Products with holes are convenient for deep-frying - excess fat flows through the slots in the shoulder blade.
  • Wooden spoons are suitable for making sauces, jams, porridges and liquid dishes that need to be tasted during the cooking process.

Also on the Internet there are many master classes and videos that show how you can easily and quickly make a wooden spatula with your own hands. It will be a wonderful gift for mom or grandmother, wife or sister. If you are not yet confident in your abilities, buy a simple blank and decorate it to your taste: by burning,

Wooden utensils are ideal for cooking in non-stick cookware. Plus, they don't burn your hands. And they look good and it's nice to take in your hand. Some pluses. But how to properly care for them?

DAILY WASH:

Rinse wooden spatulas immediately after cooking. If food dries on them, you will have to soak them, and this will cause the wood to crack. For the same reason, you should not load wooden utensils into the microwave.

Contact with water should be reduced to short procedures.

HOW TO GET RID OF FOOD SMELL:

Sometimes wooden utensils strongly absorb odors and become unpleasant to use. A simple trick will help you.

Wash the spatula or spoon with soap and water, and soak in a strong solution of baking soda (half a cup of baking soda to a glass of water) for 20 minutes. Or, rub a spatula thickly with wet baking soda and leave for 45 minutes.

Rinse afterwards and let dry.

HOW TO CHOOSE SPOONS AND SHOVEL CORRECTLY:

The best wooden spatulas and spoons are juniper. Juniper root has such a dense texture that it hardly absorbs moisture.

Bamboo items are next in strength. But they are specially treated from moisture during production.

And finally, in last place are ordinary hardwood spoons. They tend to absorb moisture and crack fairly quickly.

HOW TO PREPARE THE UTILITY FOR USE

Lubricate a new spatula with refined oil and put in the oven for 5 minutes at 180 degrees. Remove, let cool, and wipe off excess oil.

Now your spatula is saturated with oil and will not absorb water, odors and crack as much.

WHAT TO DO IF IT CRACKS AFTER A COUPLE OF YEARS OF SERVICE?

Or are there chips and dents on the wood? All irregularities can be carefully straightened with sandpaper. Then repeat the calcination procedure with oil.

Bonus tip:

Did you know that you can use a dry wooden spatula to check if the oil is hot enough in a pan? Just dip the tip of the spatula into the oil, and if air bubbles appear on it, the oil is hot enough.
