How to polish onyx at home. Onyx polishing. Free visit of a specialist

Onyx is often used as a finishing stone, and onyx products such as countertops, window sills, bar counters, and onyx floors are not uncommon. What is this stone, and how does it differ from marble?

Unlike marble, onyx is a kind of agate, belongs to semi-precious stones, while the cost of onyx is higher than the cost of marble. The most common stone is green onyx, veined with amber, brown and yellow.

The most common types of onyx

Sardonyx - onyx, it is dominated by brown, red and white shades;

Arabic onyx is a black stone with white foam spots;

Carneolonyx - an onyx with alternating stripes of white and red (very common)

Chalcedonyx - also not rare onyx, with stripes of white and gray (other colors may predominate)

Gray onyx (onyx) agate, often used for trim and decoration

Cons of onyx

Given the small selection of stone, you should be aware that the physical properties of the stone do not always allow the use of stone in sanitary areas, in areas with high humidity, traffic. The use of onyx is ideal for a small pano, window sill, some decorative elements.

Onyx polishing when required?

Onyx is a fairly soft stone. It wears out, just like marble. Without additional protection, the stone quickly loses its luster, absorbs dirt and breaks down. To protect onyx, not all means are suitable, but only those that do not change the structure of the stone. Various color enhancers should be excluded. After applying such a product, the effect will be short-lived, and in the future, there is a risk of dirty stains appearing in the structure of the stone.

Grinding and onyx polishing, is identical to the polishing of marble. In polishing, a crystallizer, polishing powder, polishes for processing granite are used. Everything is individual here, each type of stone has its own approach.

Onyx polishing price in Moscow.

It is expensive? Yes! The service is not cheap. Why?

Often onyx is part of the decor, as an example of a countertop insert in expensive furniture. In order to polish the stone, it is necessary to remove the product or protect the furniture from moisture and chemicals as much as possible, this, of course, takes a lot of time from the master.

Onyx floor in processing is cheaper, but! Considering the peculiarity of each rock, some types of stone, in terms of cost, are close to polishing granite, because, in fact, they are polished like granite.

What should you know about onyx?

The stone is capricious in care. Cleaning and maintenance of onyx must be agreed with the supplier. It is easy to get a damaged product using only “light” detergents, is it necessary to say that onyx is afraid of alkaline and acidic products?

Onyx is a gemstone that is a variety of the mineral chalcedony. When caring for it, it must be borne in mind that onyx is a relatively soft (6.5-7 on the Mohs hardness scale), porous and easily damaged stone.

It is worth noting that many of the stones sold as onyx are actually dyed agate. However, even in this case, cleaning should be done using the same methods that are applied to real onyx.

Cleaning

Cleaning onyx jewelry is quite simple: use a soft, dry cloth or soft brush to remove any dirt.

You can also use some water to dampen the fabric and make the cleaning process easier.

Do not wet the stone itself or soak it in water as it is porous and absorbs liquid easily.

After cleaning, dry your jewelry with a soft cloth.

What to Avoid When Cleaning Onyx

Since it is porous, chemicals should not be used to clean it, as they can soak in and change its color.

Although ammonia is commonly used in jewelry care, you should not use it on onyx. Even the use of soap or dishwashing liquid is not recommended.

Do not use ultrasonic cleaners on it: both the cleaning fluid and ultrasonic vibrations can be harmful to the stone.

Frame cleaning

To clean the setting, a method is used that is appropriate for the metal from which the ring or other jewelry is made.

However, because onyx is such a vulnerable gemstone, it inevitably limits how you can clean other parts of the piece of jewelry. As already mentioned, be careful not to use any active chemicals that can harm it.

If your ring is made of silver, for example, it's not recommended to soak it in a baking soda solution to remove tarnish, as you might do if the piece was all silver.

When using water and soap to clean onyx gold jewelry, be careful not to wet the gemstone; in addition, do not allow any soap or soap solution to come into contact with it.

In general, the safest way to clean the metal parts of your jewelry is to use a soft cloth and some water. Use the brush to clean hard-to-reach areas of the frame.

If you are polishing the product with special polishing cloths, do not polish the onyx with them.

Wearing jewelry

Since onyx is a stone that can be easily scratched, broken, or chipped, avoid accidental bumps when wearing your ring or other jewelry.

Always put on your jewelry after you have already applied cosmetics, hairspray or perfume that could be potentially harmful to this gemstone.

Remove onyx products when doing any housework: water and other substances used during cooking and cleaning can damage it. This also applies to the adoption of various water procedures.

Storage

Make sure your jewelry is stored in a way that protects it from damage. Wrap your pieces in soft cotton or velvet to prevent them from being scratched by other harder gemstones or metals.

You can use separate jewelry pouches, such as these for each product, and/or you can use such more spacious pouch for storing several or large items. For further protection and convenience, you can store your jewelry in a jewelry box with separate compartments - here is the jewelry box which is very popular.

    Onyx polishing and steps:

One of the most beautiful stones for interior use is Onyx. It is used when mounted on walls, as a panel of several slabs in a butterfly sweep or as a picture in a single slab, it can be illuminated from the back, which will give this stone a completely different look and delight you with its beauty.

Installation of onyx is also possible on the floor, which will emphasize your status and bring unique beauty to the interior of your apartment or house. And in order for it to open up to you to the fullest and create a feeling of solidity of the walls or floor, it is polished with pre-filling of the seams.

    • Seam cleaning(this work is carried out to remove dirt, cement and dust)
    • Seam degreasing(this work is carried out before puttying to prevent further loss of two-component adhesive - putty from the seam)
    • Puttying seams with a two-component adhesive-putty(when puttying the seams to match the stone after repolishing the onyx, you get a solid reflection and a feeling of solidity of the floor, and also prevent dirt from pulling into the seams with subsequent darkening of the onyx around the perimeter)
    • Surface leveling(this work is carried out with the roughest diamond tool to remove differences between the plates and obtain an ideal plane)
    • Grinding onyx(grinding is a procedure that must be carried out before polishing, during which large cracks, chips and cavities are puttied)
    • Solid floor resonation(this procedure is carried out to remove the smallest cracks and shells)*
      * - this stage of work is carried out only on some varieties of onyx and at the request of the customer.
    • Grinding onyx(grinding is a procedure that must be carried out after resonating the floor to remove excess adhesive before polishing) *
      * - this stage of work is carried out only after continuous resonation.
    • Onyx polishing(this work is carried out to obtain a matte or glossy shine of onyx)
    • Crystallization(reduces water permeability and increases the degree of abrasion of the onyx surface layer. Hardness increases to one on the Mohs scale, and also gives a brighter shine)
    • Onyx protection(prevents the penetration of dirt, water, oil, wine and coffee, and it is also possible to enhance the color of the structure of the stone)

If, during intensive use, the surface of the onyx window sill has lost its original mirror shine and gloss, then it's time to think about polishing it. You can do it at home with your own hands. The main thing is to have the desire and the necessary tools.

Onyx is not only a delicate, but also a very expensive natural stone, so the process of polishing window sills from it should be approached with all seriousness. A negligent attitude is fraught with clouding of the onyx surface, which will not have the best effect on the appearance of the product.

Onyx window sill polishing - tools and materials

To polish an onyx window sill, you will need the following materials and tools: an electric drill, a felt or felt polishing wheel, a special polishing paste or powder.

But if there are deep scratches on the onyx window sill, then just polishing will not be enough, in this case, polishing the onyx window sill will be the final stage of restoration, which is preceded by:

    • surface cleaning and degreasing;
    • filling of deep chips and cracks;
    • polishing, which allows you to get rid of small scratches and other minor defects.

In the absence of an electric drill, polishing the onyx surface, aimed at giving it a bright sheen, perfect smoothness and color saturation, can be done manually. To do this, a thin layer of polishing paste is applied to the surface of the window sill, which, after drying, is carefully rubbed with a felt cloth.

Of course, the use of a polishing wheel mounted on an electric drill or grinder greatly simplifies and speeds up this process, and the end result is of higher quality. Instead of polishing paste, you can use a powder similar in composition, however, in this case it is advisable to use felt nozzles. The polishing process is completed by removing excess polishing agents and thoroughly rinsing the onyx window sill with clean water.

The nuances of polishing an onyx surface

It is worth noting that onyx perfectly accepts polishing. The main thing is to choose the right polishing composition. Using felt and felt circles is a win-win option. It is important that polishing pastes or powders do not contain coloring components in their composition. Tin oxide or aluminum oxide are the best. There are also diamond polishing compounds on the market that are positioned as suitable for onyx, however, it is important to consider that they often leave scratches in the final stages of polishing.

An alternative treatment for onyx window sills is acid polishing. However, this method has a very significant drawback - a non-uniform effect.

Masters who polish onyx products professionally, for obvious reasons, are not interested in disclosing the secrets of this process. However, it is reliably known that many of them simplify this process by adding a few drops of ordinary table vinegar to an aqueous suspension of polishing powder. It is believed that such a secret ingredient at times accelerates the achievement of the desired effect.

Another important nuance is that during mechanical polishing it is important to prevent overheating of the onyx, since at a temperature of +60 ° C the stone can begin to delaminate and become covered with cracks. Of course, the consequences of non-compliance with the temperature regime can be eliminated, but this is associated with significant material and time costs.

    Onyx and its processing

Onyx is quite easy to process. The most important requirement is the gentle processing of onyx. This stone is very soft, easily cut into pieces with a diamond tool, without "greasing" it. Onyx processing prices depend on the company that will process it.

It is strictly forbidden to overheat the workpiece, so the feed rate during sawing should be equal to the average or minimum level. When manual processing of marble onyx is carried out, it is very easy and simple to control the temperature to which the stone has heated up.

with a mechanical method of processing, one should not overheat above 50 degrees (the back of the hand or cheek can “endure”). When the stone is heated above 70 degrees, the stone may burst, your workpiece will delaminate. The same effect is expected if you use rough abrasives, or incorrect feed of the workpiece.

    Disadvantages of onyx

Often the material may crumble. The negative factor is that onyx is a fragile material. Such a stone as onyx is ideal for polishing, and at the final stage of processing it is very important to observe the temperature regime.

    Onyx processing features

And one more thing you should pay attention to: onyx is an expensive material that needs attention during operation. He is very "feeling" acidic materials (lemon juice for example) and coloring substances (red wine, coffee). Because of this factor, the stone requires regular cleaning and maintenance.

But if you look from a different angle, then this process is natural, because any things that cost a lot require attention and care if your desire is that they serve you for many, many years and do not lose their inherent gloss. But on the other hand, their brilliant appearance will attract the eyes of your guests.
