10 kitchen planning rules

Before you start creating a plan for your future kitchen, you should familiarize yourself with the basic rules of ergonomics and safety, furniture size standards and proven design techniques.

  1. The main rule that you should rely on when planning a kitchen is the rule of the so-called work triangle. According to him, the sink, stove and refrigerator should not be located linearly, but in a triangular pattern. It is important that the work points are next to each other - at a distance of no more than 180 cm. So the kitchen scenario will turn out to be the most coordinated: first you take the food out of the refrigerator, then you take it to the sink to wash it, then the ingredients are cut / mixed and, finally, go to the stove.

  1. Kitchen planning begins with determining the location of the sink - it should be located within 2.5 m from the riser. Of course, the sink can be moved further than 2.5 m, for example, to the window, but in a city apartment, this will require at least a slope of the water supply pipe, and as a maximum, the installation of a pump. If you are planning kitchen in a private house, then it is best to place the sink by the window - this is more pleasant for the cook, and good for saving electricity.   2. The next point on the plan is the slab. It should be located at a distance of 40-180 cm from the sink and, of course, closer to the vent and gas pipeline, if any. On the other side of the stove there should also be a free gap of at least 40 cm wide - this is necessary for safety reasons.

  • Important! Placing the stove at a window at a distance of less than 40 cm is not safe and simply not practical.
  1. The minimum width of the aisles in the kitchen should be about 120 cm. In such a “pedestrian zone”, households will be able to move around without interfering with the cook, getting food out of cabinets and the refrigerator, and loading the dishwasher. If the kitchen is walkable, as is often the case in private homes, then the passage should be increased to 130-150 cm. In very small and impassable kitchens, 1-meter passages are acceptable.

  1. The refrigerator is more convenient to place closer to the sink than to the stove. It can also be built into the block next to the oven and microwave. With an acute shortage of space, the refrigerator can simply be taken out of the kitchen, say, into the living room or corridor.

  1. When planning a kitchen, remember that ledges can almost always be “bypassed” with shallow cabinets, and niches adapt for storage .

  • To reduce the inconvenience of a direct kitchen, you should try to plan it so that the sink is in the center between the stove and the refrigerator.

Types of furniture arrangement in the working area of ​​the kitchen

When planning, keep in mind that it is desirable that the stove, sink and refrigerator form a triangle. Scientists analyzed the movement of housewives in the kitchen and found that she spends most of the time near the sink, near the stove and refrigerator - a little less. But it moves mainly between these three objects.

To work comfortably, the sink is placed in the center, and the stove and refrigerator are on the sides of it. Linear kitchen layout

Usually two or three cabinets are appropriate, one of which is with a sink, a stove. In theory, you need to fit a refrigerator into the same wall, but this does not always work out and it is placed where there is a place.

Corner or L- or L-shaped

A universal way of arranging, which allows you to more fully use the space. It is most advantageous in square rooms. Also, with such a device, the forced movements of the hostess in the kitchen are reduced: everything is close by hand.

You can use the wall in which there is a window, and the one in which there are doors. Just thinking about what to put under the window, try not to limit the amount of light that enters the room.

It is possible to plan a kitchen in this way even with a small area: 7 meters is already enough. Maybe there will be few cabinets, but everything should fit. Often, with an L-shaped kitchen, the sink is made in the corner, under it there is a compartment for storing a trash can, detergents and technical devices.

This layout method is suitable for a long and narrow kitchen with a window in a short wall. In order not to block access to the window, leave the battery open, cabinets and appliances are placed along two walls. They are also forced to act if the premises are passable.

This is a good option for a narrow kitchen if the window and doors are in short walls. The dining area is moved closer to the window, and the remaining space is occupied by work surfaces and appliances. Only when determining the dimensions of the furniture, keep in mind that the distance between the rows should be at least 80-90 cm. To increase functionality, it is better to make the doors in the lower tier sliding, and in the upper tier - pulling out or opening up. This will further reduce the chance of bruising on open doors.

U- or U-shaped

This layout is convenient in more or less spacious kitchens, but can also be used in long narrow ones.

For a small family, you can organize a dining area due to multi-level countertops, as in the photo above. If the room is square or wide, the dining table can be placed in the middle.

In general, with such an organization there are options. You can experiment if the area allows in the program, or by cutting out cardboard squares according to the size of the planned furniture and moving them according to the plan drawn on a piece of paper. Just keep in mind that everything should be drawn to the same scale.

Island

This layout is most often found in or dining rooms. To any of the above layouts, a free-standing “island” is added, which can house a sink, stove or just a desktop.

This option can be implemented on an area of ​​​​more than 16 meters. With smaller dimensions, this place is usually occupied by a dining area. The minimum size of the island is at least 1.2-1.2 m, and it is also worth adding a distance from the working wall cabinets of at least 80-90 cm, otherwise it will be inconvenient to work.

Peninsular or G-shaped

This is a modification of the island, when a ledge is added to one of the sides - a peninsula. If dimensions allow, in such a simple way you can expand the functionality.   • try using the triangle rule. Its essence is simple - the main elements of the working area in the kitchen, such as a refrigerator, stove and sink, should be located at the vertices of an imaginary triangle. Types of kitchen space layouts

Corner (L-shaped)

This is one of the most versatile types of layout that can suit a kitchen of almost any size, location relative to other rooms in an apartment or house. One of the most advantageous options for using this type of layout would be a medium-sized square (or close to square) kitchen. If you follow the "rule of the triangle", then the angular layout of the kitchen layout most closely follows it - household appliances and storage systems are located along adjacent walls, forming an ergonomic work area.

Among the obvious advantages of the corner layout are:

One of the most popular and economical options for the production of kitchen units today is the use of MDF panels with a laminated surface. All kitchen cabinet doors are equipped with closers, in which case you can refuse to install door handles. In the bottoms of cabinets of the upper tier, as a rule, lamps are built in to brightly illuminate work surfaces. Linear (in one row)

Parallel (two rows)

A very convenient and roomy layout is suitable for medium and large kitchens (more than 10 sq. M). In such an arrangement of kitchen segments, it is very convenient to enter the three main elements of the triangle - one for each side.

The advantages of the U-shaped layout are obvious - spacious storage systems, the ability to embed a large number of household appliances.

The disadvantage is the inability to use for small rooms.

In this U-shaped kitchen, one of the sides is not adjacent to the wall, but is itself a partition screen for the adjacent dining room. In this case, the convenient placement of work surfaces is a bar counter for the next room, where you can organize a breakfast area.

Asymmetrical layout

This is a modification of the U-shaped layout, when work surfaces and appliances are located along three walls, but not following the shape of a rectangle, but asymmetrically, in accordance with the shape of the kitchen. In some rooms that have garbage chutes or other cavities for communications, such deviations from the correct geometry of the rooms are inevitable and they will have to be taken into account when planning the location of the kitchen set.

This layout is suitable for larger than average kitchen spaces (over 15 sq. M). Often such kitchens are combined with a dining area or are part of a spacious living room. In fact, you can organize an island layout complete with any of the above types by adding a kitchen island. As you know, an island is considered to be a work surface, a dining area, a storage system, or a combination of them, placed in the center of the room, having free space on all sides of the structure. The dimensions of your island, first of all, will depend on the area of ​​​​the kitchen itself, as well as on what functionality you want to give your central element. Someone, in addition to work surfaces, supplies the island with a sink, builds in a hob. At the base of the island, you can place a dishwasher or a wine cooler (perhaps both). On one side of the kitchen island, you can organize a breakfast counter (and if the kitchen area does not allow the placement of a dining table, then for other types of meals). You can extend the island with a console and get a full dining area.
