Tiling work

Laying turnkey paving slabs: technology and nuances

Compliance with technological requirements in the process of laying paving slabs prevents the appearance of such undesirable effects as an uneven surface, shrinkage of the sheet and its premature deterioration. The cost of laying paving slabs includes all work - from the calculation of the material to the removal of construction waste at the end of the work.

Planning and calculation of materials

At the first stage, the specialist travels to the site in the regions of Moscow or the Moscow region to inspect the site and take measurements. According to the data obtained, a base option is selected and the amount of materials needed is calculated to create the base and paving slabs, as well as, if necessary, a curb.

Delimitation and excavation

It is carried out in accordance with the project documentation by clearly delineating the boundaries of the future paved area using spray paint, sand or in another way. Next, excavation is carried out with improvised means or special equipment, depending on the volume of the surface for laying paving slabs. The depth of the recess is determined by the height of the cushion and the thickness of the tile.

Site preparation and marking

Substrate preparation includes work on leveling the surface, tamping it and carrying out detailed marking by pulling string along future rows of paving slabs.

Base device

Depending on the selected pillow option (standard or reinforced), the materials are laid in order of priority in a layer of the desired height. First, a layer of crushed stone is laid in the pit as a carrier layer, after - sand, and the third - a cement mixture. Please note that each layer is rammed separately immediately after the bedding with special equipment in the form of a roller or vibrating plate.

Paving slabs

It is carried out according to the markup. During the installation process, it is important that the elements are in close contact with each other, leaving only a minimum gap of 2-3 mm. After laying the first row, if all the elements lie tightly and evenly, each of them is tapped with a rubber mallet. Subsequent rows are laid according to the first, quality control every 1.5 meters and compaction of areas as they are paving.

Note! If it is not possible to immediately compact the laid area, then every 5 sq.m. the horizontal surface must be controlled using a two-meter building leveling bar. The error is permissible within the limits of 5-10 mm for every 2 m of the paved canvas.

Paved area tamping

Upon completion of laying paving slabs, the entire surface is compacted with a vibrating plate with a rubber base. Thus, the tile adheres securely to the base, and the surface becomes perfectly smooth.

backfilling gaps

The last step is grouting the space between the tiles. To do this, the seams are covered with a mixture of sand and dry cement using a brush with a hard bristle.

Stages of laying paving slabs

The process of laying paving slabs involves the following work:

  • planning and marking the contours of the site;
  • excavation of soil under the base, creation of the necessary slope and laying of insulating materials;
  • backfilling and tamping of the bearing layer of gravel;
  • application of an underlying sandy layer;
  • laying tiles and curb support;
  • backfilling the joints with sand and ramming the coating with a vibrating plate.

The cost of laying paving slabs is affected by the degree of labor intensity of the preparatory process, the type of base, and the presence of a complex pattern. At the preparation stage, all the technical details and design of the coating are carefully thought out, the presence of green spaces and drainage equipment are taken into account, and the amount of building materials is calculated.

Types of paving slabs

  • Vibrocast. The material differs from other types in that plastic compositions are used in its manufacture. The mixture is poured into special molds and subjected to vibration. As a result, products are obtained that imitate different types of coatings. Typically, such paving slabs are used for individual construction.
  • Vibropressed. The composition is prepared and poured into a mold, which is subjected to pressure and vibrations. The load is created by a special vibropress, so the material acquires an exact geometric shape and a rough surface. Products are intended for decoration of pavements, sidewalks, squares, public areas, etc.
  • Granite. Natural material is durable, resistant to temperature extremes, wear resistance and long service life. Granite paving slabs will last for many years and fully retain their original attractiveness.

Also, products are classified depending on the material of manufacture. The most popular are concrete elements, although clay tiles are also in great demand.

In our time, due to the development of small industries, paving slabs have become widespread. This method of laying paths gradually moved from the sidewalks of large cities and squares to cottages and private estates. Now more and more summer residents, instead of filling the paths with sand-cement mortar, use the services of laying paving slabs.

Technology of laying paving slabs

How long a tile floor will last depends entirely on the quality of the installation. You can do it yourself, but if this type of work is new to you, then for greater certainty it is better to use the services of some organization for which this will not be the first time. We describe the main stages of work on laying paving slabs:

  • We prepare the land for work. To do this, we remove a layer of earth to a depth of 15 cm, clear the site of excess - stones, roots, seeds of plants, tamp the earth, make grooves along the edges.
  • We cover the bottom with gravel, water it and tamp it down. You can do without this if you do not expect the arrival of vehicles.
  • We install borders in the grooves.
  • We create a pillow of sand 15 cm thick, we also ram it.
  • We lay the tiles with a wooden or rubber mallet.
  • After laying in the cracks between the tiles, we fill in the cement-sand mixture and carefully spill the cracks with water.

Laying paving slabs: how to start work

We examined the most common sequence of tile laying, but depending on the operating conditions, laying can be done using three different technologies: on sand, concrete or crushed stone. A hybrid option is often used, when, for example, sand is mixed with crushed stone. If it is understood that a large load will be exerted on the paving, then it is better to lay tiles on concrete. Sand is more suitable for walking sidewalks.

Laying paving slabs in the country

The main advantage is durability. This material has excellent resistance to cold and will last you much longer than concrete or asphalt pavement. The undoubted advantage is the ease of installation. If it is necessary to carry out any work under the coating, then the tile is carefully removed and then installed again. Moreover, if mistakes were made during laying, for example, when it rains, a puddle forms in some place, then this area can be easily repaired.

Equally important is the aesthetic performance. The variety of colors and shapes is amazing. There is room for creativity here, you can easily compose patterns and create various compositions.

The most durable, beautiful and durable paving material is natural sandstone. It has a unique texture, is an environmentally friendly natural material and fits perfectly into the landscape. Moreover, sandstone for paving can look both in the form of layers of stone and in the form of paving stones.
Sandstone paving stones are widely used in the construction of roads, pedestrian sidewalks, bridges, embankments, garden paths, due to their mineral properties and environmental safety. When properly laid, pavers require little maintenance and look flawless for decades.
Sandstone is not afraid of the main enemy of all types of coating - water and a sharp change in temperature. There are no cracks in it and water does not destroy this material. A paving stone pavement will serve for a long time, will not need repair, replacement of paving elements and will surpass all types of pavement in terms of price-quality ratio, on one condition - competently carried out laying.

I. Preparatory work

The first stage of preparatory work for laying paving stones is the breakdown of the contour of the area to be laid. This takes into account the corners of the territory, binding to the available areas, slopes. After the work has been done on the breakdown of the contour, they begin to prepare the base, which includes the following types of work:

layout
After removing the height level, you need to remove the top layer of soil and make a leveling layer of gravel or crushed stone.

Slopes, drainage.
It should be taken into account that despite the tight-fitting pavement seams, the base is impregnated with water. Therefore, a waterproof drainage bearing layer (gravel, crushed stone) is required at the base. Then part of the surface water can be diverted directly through the paving stones and the bearing layer into the soil. In any case, pavement pavement must necessarily have slopes and gutters to drain rainwater. This is necessary so that a "swamp" does not form under the paving stones.

Carrier layer device.
For the carrier layer, frost-resistant, uniform in grain size material (crushed stone, gravel) should be used. This material must be applied uniformly in height and in a straight line with appropriate slopes. When arranging simple footpaths, a layer of 15 to 20 cm is most often used. When arranging paved areas for the passage of cars, a layer of 20 to 30 cm is used. Under heavy loads, the carrier layer increases and fits into several layers, each layer must be compacted.

Installation of curbs.
To avoid "spreading" of the paving stones, a curb is used along the edges, which should reach half the height of the paving stones, and then could be covered with natural soil.

The device of the leveling sandy layer under a stone blocks.
On the compacted carrier layer, a layer of sand 3-5 cm thick is applied as an underlying layer, always clean (without clay). Before laying the underlying layer, you need to set the leveling rails and fix with sand.
After the guides have been set according to all slopes and well fixed, the underlayment is laid between them and smoothed out with a rule so that the pavers, before it is compacted, lie 1 cm above the required level. Then the guides are carefully removed, and the remaining grooves are carefully filled with sand. Do not step on the laid flooring!!!

Laying starts:
. From low to high
. From the optically important boundary
. From important visible elements, such as the front entrance of the house, porch, etc.

Before starting to lay the first row of paving stones, in order to maintain the exact distance of the joints, you need to stretch the cord over the entire length and width of this object. Then, adhering to the stretched cord, we proceed to laying. It is recommended to check the exact location of the joints every three rows of laid paving stones.
It is laid with a rubber mallet, lightly tapping on the paving stones. Every 5m2 of laid, but not compacted paving stones, its horizontal surface is controlled using a 2-meter rule, with errors from 5mm to 1 cm per 2 meters of laid area.

III Sealing and sealing

After the paving stones are laid, the coating is compacted.
After the first compaction of the finished coating, a little necessarily very dry, sifted and clean river sand is poured onto the surface, so that the sand easily and densely fills the gaps between the elements. The poured sand is spread evenly over the entire area and is hammered into the seams by simple sweeping, β€œtying” the entire coating firmly and reliably. The dry and clean coating is then compacted again and a layer of dry screened sand is applied. It is recommended to leave this layer of sand to lie down for a while. After that, you can sweep the site again.
When laying paving stones on pavements on which vehicles move, it is necessary to create joints with sufficiently strong and stable filling so that the shear forces created by the load of the wheels are reliably transmitted from stone to stone, otherwise the stones will move relative to each other. Filling of seams is expedient first of all on car washes and on petrol stations. The width of the seams should not be less than 8 mm. When choosing the right potting material, the climatic and operating conditions must be taken into account. The use of bituminous or similar filling materials maintains a certain elasticity of the pavement.

IV Current operation

In winter, in order to avoid frost, the coating should be cleaned regularly with a broom and a wooden shovel. To reduce slipperiness, you can sprinkle with sand. If the snow was not removed in time, and ice formed, in no case do not remove the ice with a metal crowbar.
When exposed to various materials on the paving stones, contamination can occur that significantly changes the type of coating. For example, car tires leave black streaks, dust and road grime make the surface black and gray. With the help of cleaning agents and special substances, the surface can be restored to its original color.
