Architectural forms for the garden. Creating a beautiful garden and park: we study small architectural forms, their types and applications. Classification of architectural forms

Small architectural forms for playgrounds and kindergartens are essential elements of the improvement of the children's territory. In addition to children's play equipment for active games, the playground should also contain elements of small architectural forms: children's gazebos, awnings and walking verandas, benches and benches, children's sets with a table, trash cans, fences and lawn fences.

A well-maintained children's play area on the playground in the courtyard of the house or kindergarten evokes a feeling of coziness and comfort, it's like a small world inside another, big world. And children's small architectural forms will attract the attention of kids and the desire to quickly understand the arrangement of the children's play area. This is a great way to take children's leisure time with outdoor activities at any time of the year, and leisure time will combine both entertaining and educational functions.

It is difficult to imagine a garden without "green walls" directed upwards. When creating them, it is difficult to do without vines, especially in small areas, because they successfully play their role, but they take up very little space on the ground! Special structures help climbing or climbing plants “stand on their feet” - arches and garden screens (lattices, trellises or trellises). At the same time, spectacular vines win only “in pairs” with beautiful and well-placed supports - an unsuccessful design will compromise even the most luxurious plant.

Where to put? The lattice will help to distract the eye from not shining beauty or boring places - for example, from the garden (photo 1).

Arches and garden screens serve not only to support vines, but also to divide the site into functional zones. Photo 2 shows how a "curtain" of girlish grapes and Coignet grapes visually separates the garden from the house. This living screen always looks great, and in the fall its beauty strikes on the spot.

With the help of a series of arches, you can arrange the transition from one part of the garden to another.

How to choose? Supports should not only match the house and the general idea of the garden, but also fit the vine physically and visually. That is, an arch or screen for a large and heavy plant should have strength and solidity, and an elegant plant "lace" needs a light openwork "wall". Among other things, you should consider the method of attaching the vine to the support.

Standards

The dimensions of the arch should be such that people can easily walk and stand under it. Its minimum width is 1.2–1.5 m, height is at least 2.1–2.2 m. In addition, the arch must necessarily have a “thickness” of 50 cm or more - a side wall, near which, in fact, and creepers will grow. The shape of the arch arch can be very diverse - round, rectangular, triangular, etc.

Pergolas

These small architectural forms are also entwined with climbing plants. But unlike the previous group of supports, the pergola is something like a transparent "canopy" or "tunnel".

With the help of pergolas, you can divide the site into functional zones or, conversely, combine the elements of the garden into a single whole. They allow you to disguise an uninteresting building, decorate the house and fence off cozy corners from prying eyes.

It is pergolas that create volumes in a young garden in which trees have not yet grown. High verticals literally transform any flat plain.

Most garden plots have randomly scattered buildings that make the most sense to group. You can combine them with a pergola. In addition, these small architectural forms create a special atmosphere in the garden.

Where to put? Most often, the main purpose of the pergola is to create an overlap over the path: in this case, it extends from one garden element to another - like a series of interconnected arches or like a kind of tunnel (photo 3). At the other end of this "corridor" there should be something attractive, causing a desire to approach it - a tree, a sculpture, a sundial, etc.

(Photo 3). Photo: Tatyana Shikanyan

Pergola can "work" as a separator. Photo 4 shows how she divides the site into two unequal parts, separating the entrance area from another, more private area. This option is the best suited for climbing roses and clematis - it is beautiful and at the same time easy to manufacture. Pillars of timber, placed at regular intervals, are connected by horizontal crossbars of exactly the same lumber. In turn, they are crowned with crossbars made of thinner timber. The gaps between the posts are filled with frames with a mesh screen of wooden slats. The pergola is painted in a pleasant light green color and consists of five sections to the left of the arch and five sections to the right of it. The width of each section and arch is 1.5 m.

(Photo 4). Photo: Tatyana Shikanyan

If you want to create a secluded atmosphere in some place in the garden, organize a horizontal plane above it. A transparent pergola roof is ideal (photo 5).

(Photo 5). Photo: Tatyana Shikanyan

A pergola can fence off an outdoor living room near the house (photo 6). At the same time, it decorates the facade. If the pergola is attached to the house, it is called a wall pergola, and the crossbars are attached to the wall with metal shoes or attached from above to a horizontally located beam.

(Photo 6). Photo: Tatyana Shikanyan

How to choose? Pergolas with supports made of square timber with a side of 10-15 cm can be considered universal. For natural gardens or a country-style garden, options from tree trunks are good: “wild” designs give a well-groomed garden a special charm, and if there is a craftsman in the family and a forest nearby, this pleasure will turn out to be free. Pergolas from a combination of two types of materials are good, for example, natural stone and metal, brick and wood.

The design of the pergola must be designed for the weight of the green mass of the plants that are growing it, be rigid, durable, reliable and resistant to gusts of wind.

A wooden pergola most often consists of three mutually linked parts - pillars (racks), beams and crossbeams. The pillars are made of wooden beams, logs, roughly processed or unprocessed poles. Beams (purlins) are laid on top of the pillars, crossbars are evenly placed on them perpendicular to the beams (most often they are made from a board measuring 20 × 5 cm and placed vertically).

Standards

The minimum height of the pillars is 2.4–2.5 m. They must be placed on an individual or strip foundation or installed on metal crutches driven in to a depth of 45–60 cm. It is important to make the pergola proportional: the width of the structure must be greater than the height (either at least they should be equal). The step between the uprights along the pergola is usually no more than 3-3.5 m, most often it is a third or a quarter more than the width of the "corridor". The length is chosen based on the size of the particular place that this design will decorate.

The art of imitation

There are many tricks with which you can visually expand, modify or "rebuild" the space of the garden, using just trellises, paints or mirrors. There is even a special term for such elements - "garden blendes".

Where to do? As a rule, optical illusions are arranged on the walls of buildings or on fences. Also, with their help, you can draw attention to a beautiful fragment of the garden or, conversely, distract from the ugly or disguise it.

A rather popular technique is a landscape painted on a dull and boring wall (photo 7). From a close distance, you can see that this is just a painting, but the farther you are from the drawing, the stronger the illusion of volumetric space, the reality of objects and forms. Deception, as it were, breaks the line between reality and fantasy.

(Photo 7). Photo: Tatyana Shikanyan

Standards

It is better to draw a "magic landscape" on the northern or northeastern free wall or fence. The picture should not be illuminated by direct sunlight - they will negate all the efforts of the artist. Use weather resistant paints. Pick a story that won't bore you too quickly. To create an illusory landscape, you need the talent of an artist, otherwise you can spoil the whole garden. If you are not very confident in your abilities, draw a smaller and simpler picture, such as a false window, which can be supplemented with a real window box and living plants in it.

Not too attractive walls or fences are often advised to decorate with lattices and vines. But they can also be “disguised” with the help of a picturesque panel. For example, a seascape with boats and a distant shore, on which a village is located (photo 8). Drawing on a wall or fence is a great opportunity to visually enlarge the space and turn a boring flat vertical surface into a sea or a garden that goes into perspective. The plot can be anything - just do not forget that in Central Russia there is not only summer. If you live outside the city all the time, and the plot is small, think about whether a village with cows or a lush tropical jungle against the backdrop of snowdrifts will look good.

(Photo 8). Photo: Tatyana Shikanyan

In a blind fence, you can arrange a garden gate, behind which there is supposedly a neighbor's garden, or cut a door into it. If you pull the handle of this door (photo 9) or just take a good look at it, you will learn a “terrible secret” - it does not lead anywhere, but simply decorates the barbecue area next to the gazebo. How uncomfortable it would be here if the gaze rested on a blank fence!

(Photo 9). Photo: Tatyana Shikanyan

If you are particularly successful in any part of the garden, enclose it in a wooden or metal frame of a large size, for example 2.4 × 4 m, set in front of it.

You can also change the space with the help of a garden mirror. The idea of installing a large mirror at the end of a park alley dates back hundreds of years, but even now it can be successfully used not only for large, but also for small spaces. Another option is to close the last arched span with a mirror. The path to such a pseudo-arch should go at an angle so that a person sees his reflection only a few steps away from it.

An arch built into the fence of wooden planks framing the mirror will create the illusion of a passage to another, next garden. You can also transform a solid fence into a "house with a roof" (photo 10) and "windows" in which mirrors are inserted instead of glass. It will turn out something like a theatrical scenery or a garden hoax. By the same principle, you can hide the compost container from prying eyes by enclosing it in the walls of a wooden gazebo and glazing the windows with mirrors.

(Photo 10). Photo: Tatyana Shikanyan

If you put a large mirror in a chic frame in front of some attractive garden composition, you will get a beautiful picture that will change in accordance with the seasonal changes. Think carefully about where you will admire it.

Mirrors can also be inserted into the doors of a cabinet for storing garden tools, installed near the garden path. As a result, it will "disappear" - instead of the closet, you will see the reflection of the garden.

Things for birds

Among the small architectural forms there are objects of a special kind - designed specifically for birds. These wonderful feathered creatures in the country are absolutely necessary: they not only delight the eye, distract from sad thoughts and everyday routine, delight the ear with their singing, but also destroy pests, which means they help the plants stay healthy.

How to choose? You can attract birds by installing bird feeders. Immediately think: will this "dining room" be year-round or only winter? In the first case, the feeders should look pretty (photo 11), although the hungry birds themselves usually do not care about design delights.

(Photo 11). Photo: Tatyana Shikanyan

To save birds wintering in the garden, regularly fill the feeders with different seeds - not only sunflower seeds, but watermelon and pumpkin seeds. Feed the titmouse with pieces of unsalted bacon, fixing them on a tree with a wire.

Those species of birds that nest in nature in hollows will like birdhouses and other suitable "apartments" (photo 12). You can buy ready-made houses or make them yourself. The main thing is to install them so that they provide protection from rain and sun, as well as from cats, squirrels and birds of prey.

(Photo 12). Photo: Tatyana Shikanyan

Ornamental plants useful for birds

Shrubs provide reliable shelter for birds, they also provide them with food in winter in the form of berries and insects hibernating under fallen dry leaves. Do not cut grasses and some other perennials with seeds in the fall - this will help our friends hold out until spring. Table and shelter: elderberry, viburnum, mountain ash, irga, mahonia, golden currant, mountain ash, Tatar honeysuckle, spirea, hazel, hawthorn. Shelter and food: wild rose, barberry, sucker, hawthorn, black locust, blackthorn. Safety in winter and summer: dense hedges of arborvitae and juniper.

All birds need water to drink and bathe. If you don't have a pond, provide a bird feeder. Usually it is a stone, concrete or metal garden decoration with a shallow wide bowl on a pedestal (photo 13). Change the water from time to time and add it during a drought - the birds will thank you.

Sculpture

Although garden sculpture began to come into fashion in Russia relatively recently, these elements quickly "registered" in many areas.

Where to put? Figures help in placing accents by controlling the movement of the eye. They are used to highlight the key points of the composition, to form the rhythm of the landscape.

When purchasing such an ornament, do not forget that every detail of a small garden space should be appropriate and correspond to its scale. Ridiculous or overly frilly sculptures can make you want to leave even the most beautiful garden. On the contrary, a well-chosen decoration will emphasize and enhance the impression of a plant or water composition and look logical in the place where it is installed.

Only one sculptural composition should be visible from one viewing point - it would be a pity if carefully selected decorations are lost in the crowd. Statues in general should be used sparingly - in a small garden one is enough. If there are several figures, place them apart, as a pile of sculptures on the site will spoil the whole impression of the garden.

How to choose? I like small plastic in the garden most of all, especially images of animals. The main rule when choosing such sculptures is the original artistic embodiment (photo 14). Overly realistic representatives of the animal world are best avoided. Miniature animals and birds are placed on lawns, flower beds, next to water bodies and on the patio. Consider the natural features of their prototypes: frogs, storks and ducks are good near a pond and stream, rabbits and sheep are good on a lawn, a cat is good on a wall ledge or on a retaining wall. A decorative garden will immediately sparkle with new colors if you decorate it with figures of domestic animals (photo 16).

(Photo 16). Photo: Tatyana Shikanyan

Standards

The first and basic principle of placing sculptures on the site is the observance of proportions. Large objects are suitable for a large garden. But this does not mean at all that microscopic figures are needed in a small garden - after all, we decorate the garden, not the dollhouse! Outdoor room decorations are not good - they just get lost. To draw attention to small but interesting things, they are placed on pedestals or columns (photo 15).

At the entrance to the forest part of the garden, you can put a gnarled sculpture resembling a fairy-tale forest character or animal.

In the garden, abstract compositions can look interesting, which do not depict anything specific, but fit well into the garden in form, color and material. A stone of an interesting shape on a pedestal, and an unusual snag, cube or ball made of different materials can become a garden sculpture. The correct shape of the ball creates a strong contrast with the free outlines of plants and enhances the impression of them. The sphere can be made of stone, wood, concrete, and even woven from vines, as in the photo. Balls are used not only as accents in compositions - they are also used to create a certain rhythm, as well as to frame a landscape, a bench or an entrance.

Summer residents who arrange a Japanese-style garden on their site are unlikely to do without a stone lantern (photo 17).

(Photo 17). Photo: Tatyana Shikanyan

Creative people with non-standard thinking sometimes turn the simplest and most ordinary things into garden sculptures. For example, if you take an old chair, attach a flowerpot to the seat and place it in a suitable place in the garden, it will turn out quite nice.

We draw the attention of readers that all the photos for the article were taken in gardens near Moscow. An exception is a panel landscape from Ireland (photo 8).

The summer cottage, as well as the adjoining suburban area, are not only a place intended for gardening and other household work, but also for relaxation and contemplation of natural beauty. In this regard, the owners of the suburban area strive to make it attractive in all respects - well-groomed green plants form a harmonious symbiosis with country architecture. Taking this into account, experts urge the owners of a suburban area to pay attention to the fact that green spaces alone, which, at first glance, are the dominant element of the dacha territory, are not able to create a holistic, complete look of the backyard territory, which means that special architectural structures, called "small architectural forms of landscape design". It is they who will allow you to easily create a peaceful atmosphere of relaxation and unity with nature, no matter what territory you have, whether it is a small cottage or a luxurious country estate. After all, it is not for nothing that these, as many believe, “excesses” are the final chord of the symphony of landscape design, recognized as a necessity in any territory, to one degree or another intended for recreation.

Small architectural forms: historical background

The history of small architectural forms has its roots in the Renaissance, when many specialists worked on the construction of Italian park ensembles, from gardeners to great sculptors and architects. At the same time in Japan, sages who preached the search for truth in contemplation, argued that the stone is an integral part of the garden, in fact, its basis.

The stone, present in the Japanese garden in its natural beauty, and also used to create sculptures, carried a sacred and sometimes symbolic meaning. A Japanese garden, even with an area of several square meters, has never been complete without small architectural forms made of stone, whether it be a decorative fountain or a small pagoda.

While in Japan they were reverent about stone and saw in it a mysterious hidden power, in Russia they idolized wood and, undoubtedly, knew how to work with it. In the Old Russian garden you can find many images of fabulous birds and animals, epic heroes depicted on carved pillars, as well as other products of Old Russian artisans. Thus, small architectural forms surrounding the space around the house made it possible to bring the garden space to the desired stylistic concept, which at present makes it possible to clearly distinguish between existing stylistic trends.

On the role and purpose of small architectural forms

Despite the fact that in Europe small architectural forms are an integral element of any garden, which allows us to call them "classics of the genre", in Russia they have only recently begun to gradually come into fashion. In view of the fact that the MAF is decorated with luxurious gardens of celebrities and the estates of high-ranking personalities, there is an opinion that this pleasure is available only to people with a high social status. However, this is fundamentally wrong, since decorating a garden with small architectural forms is available even to a simple summer resident who decides to diversify the design of his site, ennobling it with a vending building.

In this case, everything depends only on the type of building you like and the material from which it is constructed. Despite the fact that expensive buildings, such as sculptures, fountains, amphitheaters and labyrinths, are not rare in the extensive list of LFAs, you can also find a more budget option in it by equipping an original pergola on your site, an unusual bridge over an artificial reservoir or a gazebo, in where you can spend warm summer evenings.

The main groups of MAF in accordance with their functional purpose

The main function of a small architectural form is an aesthetic addition to the fundamental development of a suburban area, it must harmoniously combine not only convenience and original design, but also the shape and materials from which one or another small architectural form is made must be in harmony with the surrounding landscape. Since LAFs are a component of landscape design, characterized by both aesthetic and functional purposes, experts propose to divide all LAFs into the following functional groups:

MAF for delimiting the territory

Situations arise when it becomes necessary to visually and aesthetically delimit the territory, for example, to separate the area intended for recreation from the working area, or buildings characterized by economic purposes, and hide working equipment from prying eyes. The following elements can be attributed to small architectural forms of this purpose:

  • Various kinds of decorative fences;
  • bridges and arches;
  • Stairs;
  • Fountains;
  • Decorative retaining walls;
  • Sculptures, flowerpots and topiaries.

Arches, balustrades, bridges and other structures designed to enclose the territory delimit the functional areas of the garden, perfectly emphasizing the style and personality of your site. Topiary is a specific architectural form, made in the form of a sculpture carved from trees and shrubs. Like arches, they perform only a decorative function, dividing the space into separate parts.

MAF necessary for arranging recreation areas

In addition to household needs, LFAs play an important role in creating places for recreation in the garden. Such elements are:

  • Garden and country furniture;
  • Sports grounds and children's playgrounds;
  • Pergolas and benches;
  • And, finally, barbecues, swings and other MAFs for relaxation.

MAFs Designed for Convenience

In order to make the stay of people in a particular functional area more comfortable, experts suggest equipping the following LAFs on their site:

  • Lanterns and other lighting devices;
  • drinking fountains;
  • Urns.

Varieties of MAF depending on the use of plants

In the process of creating some MAFs, plants are used, which makes it possible to divide all MAFs into varieties in accordance with the use of plants, among which there are:

  • MAF, the design of which does not provide for the presence of plants;
  • MAF, providing for the presence of plants.

Since small architectural forms without the use of plants were discussed above, we will not dwell on their classification in detail, and proceed to the description of the second group.

So, there are the following small architectural forms, the design of which involves the use of plants:

  • Trellis, which is a metal support or wooden support for climbing plants. Most often, the support is a light garden trellis for plants. Growing up, they create a green screen that protects from the sun on a hot afternoon and performs a decorative function. The construction of such screens is carried out in the case when it is necessary to cover outbuildings from prying eyes, which are characterized by an unsightly appearance. By combining several gratings, you can create a kind of shady corner or a green gazebo. To equip such a gazebo, you can use a lattice with a wide variety of patterns, since in the summer they will be completely covered with blooming plants.
  • Pergolas are also a supporting variety of small architectural forms. With the help of pergolas entwined with vines and other climbing plants, you can create cozy picturesque corners, one of the purposes of which is the zoning of space. From a constructive point of view, a pergola is a canopy, an integral part of which is a lattice, entwined with climbing plants and replacing the roof. The pergola is based on several arched structures, which are interconnected by special lintels. By planting climbing plants near the pergola, in the future you will become the owner of a green corridor leading, for example, from the gazebo to the patio. According to landscape designers, a pergola can successfully replace a cozy green gazebo, which has no walls, and pillars braided with lianas contribute to the creation of a limited interior space that attracts with romantic mystery and solitude.
  • Arches, the design of which is a semicircle, are often used as an element that helps to highlight one or another part of the territory. In order to hide from the scorching sun on a hot summer day, an arch entwined with flowering vines can be placed along the garden path. And if you equip several arches at the same time not far from each other, you get a blooming shady tunnel, where you can also take a walk on a hot afternoon.

  • Bosquets - another type of small architectural forms using plants are bosquets, which are the so-called "green rooms", the walls of which are formed with the help of specially trimmed trees and shrubs. The spread of this type of MAF in landscape design was its historical popularity: in the 16-17th century, the design of gardens in France could not do without the construction of bosquets.

Varieties of MAF depending on the material of manufacture

Depending on what material was used in the manufacturing process of a particular MAF, there are:

  • Small architectural forms made of wood and other natural materials, such as vines. Combining with the surrounding natural space, they are able to recreate the atmosphere of naturalness and unity with the natural environment. Wood is considered the material that experts prefer to give priority to when choosing safe materials for playgrounds and playgrounds, as it is subject to the highest requirements regarding environmental safety. In addition to small architectural forms for playgrounds, gazebos, garden bridges, awnings and various benches are made of wood.

  • Small architectural forms made of concrete and natural stone.

  • Small architectural forms made of metal, in view of the specific properties of this material, are in any case a unique element of any design project and adorn the most exquisite backyard territory. Metal often becomes a material for the manufacture of gazebos, unique flower girls and street lamps, barbecues, barbecues and other small architectural forms that are distinguished by their durability.

Original design ideas for popular garden highlights

gazebos

Representing covered structures, in most cases gazebos are built on solid concrete or wooden bases. The most popular materials for the manufacture of gazebos are wood, metal or brick, as well as combinations of these materials. The shape of the arbors is no less diverse than the materials used: they can be round, square, and hexagonal. Despite the fact that in narrow circles designers are still arguing about the purpose of arbors, their role in the design of garden plots is obvious - this is the most successful place for relaxing and evening tea drinking in the fresh air. In addition to a cozy corner in which you can hide from the scorching sun, the gazebo can become an original decoration of a country backyard, which contributes to the most frequent installation of small architectural forms of this type.

Gazebos and rotundas

These small architectural forms are not a common element in a simple country house. In most cases, they are echoes of the classical stylistic trends, distinguished by their imposing style and the need to follow certain design standards. Gazebos and rotundas are indoor MAFs designed for solitary contemplation or private tea parties.

Belvedere

The historical roots of these MAFs go back to medieval Europe, where their installations selected the most picturesque gardens located on hilly terrain. The highest elevation was chosen as the most successful place for the construction of a belvedere - an observation deck, surrounded by supporting columns along the perimeter. Despite the fact that stone, metal, concrete or wooden gazebos are an actual addition to a modern garden, it is necessary to be a true professional in order to harmoniously combine gazebos with a modern landscape.

decorative lanterns

As in ancient Japan, decorative lanterns are popular in modern gardens, installed at certain, most significant compositional points. Their combinations with stones, trees and shrubs, as well as man-made water sources are also welcome, for example, for example, a good place for a decorative light source would be to place it at the foot of a mountain, near a well, near the entrance to a garden or near a pond. Illuminating the garden and making it the safest, lanterns are a compositional element of architecture, creating a soft contrast with the natural environment. In order to competently fit the lanterns into the surrounding space, it is necessary to clearly compare their sizes with the sizes of the decorated territory. In modern landscape design, there are several types of lanterns, the main attention of which deserves the following:

  • Decorative lanterns on stands, the constituent elements of which are the base, the pedestal and the holder for the lamp itself;
  • Lanterns that do not have a stand, as well as a pedestal and a decorative top, are located directly on the ground;
  • Decorative lamps, the constituent element of which is a pedestal, consisting of several legs (two, three or more).

Lamps, the dimensions of which are proportional to the surrounding area, can become a harmonious addition to a small garden, giving it a charming originality and highlighting the most advantageous compositional points with light.

garden furniture

Since speaking of garden furniture as a small architectural form for a garden, we mean a certain detail of a garden interior with a more or less permanent habitat and constructive form, in this section we will not talk about weightless tables and chairs installed on terraces and removed in case of any inclement weather. weather, but about solid built-in garden furniture, which will become a real decorative element of the garden. Forming the most comfortable zones in the garden, they become an indispensable element of the backyard. Most often, a garden bench acts as such structures, without which it is difficult to imagine a garden, to one degree or another intended for relaxation and cozy gatherings. Since it is considered a place where you can admire the bright flower beds, the bewitching overflow of water in the pond and the mysterious life of its inhabitants, it is important to choose the right place for its location. It can comfortably sit at the end of a shady alley or suddenly find itself around the bend of a winding garden path, invitingly inviting to relax and watch the natural beauty. It can become an integral element of the garden, forming its general stylistic concept, or a separate element for relaxation, located in a shady pergola entwined with flowering vines.

sculptures

Sculptures also belong to small architectural forms, installed by oneself. However, their choice is often associated with some difficulties, which sometimes only professionals can handle. When choosing sculptures for a garden, it is important to follow the general stylistic concept of the garden. With this in mind, you will not be able to harmoniously synthesize a rock frog with the strict forms of a regular garden, despite the fact that you liked it so much.

But, if you are the owner of a garden with a small pond, made in a landscape style, it will become a harmonious addition to it. Decorating fountains and other man-made reservoirs cannot do without the use of stone sea monsters or lovely mermaids, and an antique-style statue is suitable to create a compositional center of a rockery or mixborder. And for lovers of romance, we advise you to arrange a cozy corner, entwined with ivy and blooming roses, where lovely cupids and mysterious forest nymphs will delight your eyes and give you a romantic mood.

And this is not all small architectural forms with which you can turn your site into a cozy place to relax. The main thing to remember in order not to get lost in their diversity is a strict adherence to the stylistic concept of your garden, adhering to which you can choose and install any small architectural forms with your own hands.

12 TIPS FOR SELECTING PLANTS FOR YOUR HEDGE

One way to hide from the prying eyes of neighbors can be to install a hedge. Hence the question arises how to do it.

1. To make a hedge you will need a lot of effort and patience. The result of your efforts will be a beautiful green wall, which will become a true decoration of your site. A hedge made by you yourself is a rather laborious process. It should become your protection from neighbor's interest, from wind, dust and dirt.

2. The choice of vegetation for a natural fence is large enough.

First you need to decide on the height of the fence. If your choice falls on plants whose height reaches a meter, then golden currant, boxwood, cinquefoil, barberry can be used here. Borders are usually made from these plants, which are given a certain shape.
Subsequently, they will need to be trimmed periodically. Plants such as heather and spirea form the so-called "free" hedge.

4. For hedges from one to three meters high, it is better to plant arborvitae or hawthorn.

5. The fence that will keep you safe can be thorny. In this case, it is better to choose plants for hedges such as hawthorn or wild rose. But do not forget that such a "fence" can be dangerous not only for uninvited guests, the owners themselves can get hurt with a thorn. Therefore, if thorny plants are not suitable, then you should choose something else, for example, small-leaved elm, alpine currant or linden.

6. Which hedge plants are better to use: coniferous or deciduous?
As you know, deciduous trees are more resistant to natural conditions and conduct more light. The main advantage of conifers is their constantly green color. They will make your site more strict and correct. But there are also certain disadvantages. Firstly, coniferous plants are more expensive than deciduous ones. Secondly, they are not so resistant to adverse climate manifestations.

7. It is also worth paying attention to the fact that plants can be planted in one row, or you can make several of them. Hedges that are planted in one row usually serve to decorate and decorate the alley. They will not protect the area from dust and dirt. Double-row hedges will require more space for their placement. But their protection will be more significant.

8. If you want the hedge to be in flowers, then choose plants such as hydrangea, lilac, forsythia. In place of flowers there may be berries. To do this, plant edible honeysuckle, hazel, viburnum, currant.

9. When planting trees and shrubs for hedges in the country, they dig a groove 50 cm wide and 30 cm deep. At a greater depth, loosen the soil and put a layer of compost (10 cm) or rotted manure, which is mixed with loosened soil. After this preparation proceed to landing. It is best to work together. One holds the plants in a vertical position and in a straight line, determined by a pre-stretched rope, and the second sprinkles their roots with soil taken out of the groove. When the groove is half full, the soil around the roots is well tamped, watered, and the groove is filled with the remaining soil. It is very important that the plants are planted at the same depth as they were grown in the nursery.

10. In cases where it is necessary to create a hedge in front of a group of perennial flowers or behind a retaining wall, between a group of flowers and a hedge or between a retaining wall and a hedge, a strip of roofing paper 50-60 cm wide is installed vertically in the soil. This creates a barrier to the roots hedge plants which, when normally developed, interfere with the development of flowers or destroy a retaining wall. In both cases, the hedge should be at a greater distance from the flower groups or retaining walls.

11. You can plant a low hedge along the path. In this case, a border is installed between the fence and the path.

12. Hedges in the country are homogeneous - when only one plant species is used, and mixed - when several types of plants are used. In addition, they can be cut into the appropriate shape, or left to grow freely. In the latter case, the hedge is most often made mixed, using plant species with abundant and long flowering.

As you can see, the choice is large and varied. And only on your desires, opportunities, features of the territory depends on what plants the hedge around the plot will be full of.

They do not take up too much space in the garden, but the benefits from them are enormous. And most importantly - they are able to quickly transform the summer cottage.

A gazebo entwined with romantic climbing roses - a chamber corner for sincere conversations

In pursuit of harmony and dreams of perfection, you want to improve and decorate your favorite garden endlessly, creating your own little paradise, a sweet idyll - a place where the soul will always strive. And there is nothing better than small architectural forms - MAFs - for a wonderful renewal of a summer cottage. These are objects and buildings that "make" a garden:, and many other objects. They have no equal in terms of the richness of decor possibilities, these are real magic wands!

MAFs can be called a "garden designer" - they allow you to embody almost any idea and at the same time achieve stunning visual effects. And it is not necessary to look for insanely expensive exclusive designs. If desired, any standard decor item can be turned into an art object. Or, taking objects already “living” in the garden as a basis and, giving them a new “sound”, supplement them with new ones - and the “picture” on the piece of land you cherish will be miraculously transformed, caressing the eye and giving peace and tranquility. And then the dull, as if by magic, will turn into a cheerful house!

A dull hozblok will turn into a cheerful house - the decoration of the entire garden. All you need is creativity and skillful hands.

For the "reincarnation" you will need: you can take the old ones or make them from slats of suitable size. Having painted in a bright or pastel (depending on the chosen style) color and fixing them on the walls, we get overhead "windows". The stylization will be complemented by small flower pots hanging in the “windows”, with mini-peppers or tomatoes. To complete the look, decorate the windows with “curtains”, which ordinary vinyl lace doilies can handle.

And here is another extraordinary idea on the topic of windows: they will become an expressive accent of a country canopy, but they will be located ... no, not in the walls that are not here. Hang brightly colored picture frames on ropes around the perimeter of the canopy, in the openings between the supports - that's pretty "windows" are ready!

A firewood shed can be camouflaged by lining its walls with natural or artificial stone, and using reeds or straw as a roofing material is an option for a country-style garden. The classic style requires more restraint: plastered and painted walls, roofing - from the same material as in the main house.

Left: a woodcutter and old wagon wheels are attributes of country style. Right: Fake frames are a great wall decor for an old barn. And if you put dried flowers in frames, you get unusual “dry pictures”

Magnificent "frame" for MAFs - plants. Different types of landscaping look interesting and unusual from different sides of the structure. For example, decorate one wall or a summer house with a traditional one, and hang many, many containers with bright ones on the second.

Advice: instead of flower pots, take hanging organizers-pockets made of oilcloth - and the falling "flower beds" will look original and fresh.

Enchanting and another option - double landscaping when, against the background of the main vertical, hanging pots and baskets with plants are fixed with a second layer. Or place individual colorful plants, mini-beds or flower arrangements in paving modules at the foot of a canopy or garden pavilion.

Applying reception "decor+decor"(speaking the language of experts - combining the ideas of architecture with the ideas of gardening), you can achieve stunning results! For example, try to design a small hozblok or as a miniature "estate" with all its attributes, flower beds, and this landscape novelty will "play" in the garden, will become its highlight.

The Japanese stylization of an ordinary canopy consists of a green "roof" formed by hanging ropes made of hemp and a bamboo trunk tied in several places with a rope. Cart wheels and a yoke are decor appropriate for country style decoration.

Advice: these same items can also act as supports for plants - for example, elegant buckets with flowers and vegetables on a yoke are extremely organic.

If the soul asks for something completely new and non-trivial, use the technique of creating architectural hybrids. These are garden structures of an unusual type, combining several functions. For example, not just a patio area, but a platform with a non-standard canopy. Not an ordinary gazebo, but a multi-level podium with openwork walls. Barbecue pergola, canopy podium, pergola bench, trellis bench- do not list everything.

Well, perhaps the most attractive architectural hybrids, especially for small areas, are garden chill-outs or places to stay. As a rule, this is a podium or wooden flooring (low or high), combined with a “bed”, a canopy or pergola and a mobile resting place: a hammock, a hanging chair or a bizarrely shaped bench.

Left: A garden chill-out invites pampering and blissful relaxation - what else do you need in a green paradise? In addition, creating such a place to relax is not difficult at all, you just need to want to! And make the dream come true. Right: potted plants can be used to decorate the patio in front of the gazebo

Advice: planks pre-treated with an antiseptic or decking (wooden tile modules) are suitable for flooring, both coatings can be laid independently.

The garden chill-out is an object, although small, but complex, thanks to it it seems that country estates are “endless and without edge”, and there are many places for recreation. This "optical illusion" is explained simply: in the chill-out, as it were, several cozy corners and objects are combined.

Any architectural hybrid is an individual and unique design, so you can’t buy a “standard version” in a store, you have to create it yourself.

Advice: it is better to "collect" a hybrid from simple components that can be purchased separately.

It is easy to find a pergola, trellis or arch for sale: you can do it on our market, where the goods of the largest online stores are presented. .

All that remains is to combine, put together all the details, and finally combine them with decoration in the same style - and we have a complete object in front of us!

Shall we talk?

The most popular and enduringly loved representative of small architectural forms is the gazebo. She sets the style for the entire garden, so the creation of this art object must be approached thoughtfully. There are many varieties of gazebos: from impressive buildings designed for 8-10 people, to mini-options - for just one "visitor".

What size?
When deciding on this parameter of the “house”, proceed from what it will serve for and how many people can become its guests at the same time. Keep in mind: it is better to plan a large area than to huddle in tight quarters later.

How to choose a place?
Be guided by two criteria: beauty and practicality. A spectacular view should open from the windows of the object, and access to it should be as convenient as possible. Important: Do not place the gazebo in the direction of the prevailing winds and in the coldest part of the garden. If there are no open areas in the front area or, place the “conversation house” here, but it is better to place it on the podium, elevation, or at the highest point of the site.

How to arrange?
The gazebo is located in the garden, among natural landscapes, so living plants will be the best decor for it: trees, shrubs, flowering and ornamental leaves.
