Drywall false fireplace: step-by-step assembly instructions

The first stage is the preparation of tools and materials

Tools and materials for work

Start by preparing a set for work. First of all, you will need the drywall itself. When choosing a material, be guided by the features of the selected finishing cladding. If tiling is planned, it is better to buy a moisture-resistant modification of drywall.

Types of drywall guides

Profiles

To fasten the frame elements, buy self-tapping screws. The recommended length of the fasteners is 1.4-1.6 cm. You also need to buy self-tapping screws with a countersunk head to fix the sheets. In addition, you need to purchase dowel-nails for attaching the profiles to the floor and walls.

Types of self-tapping screws for profiles

Next, focus on the features of the selected finish. If you are going to wallpaper the portal or paint it, get a primer and putty. If the false fireplace will be tiled, buy tile adhesive and grout.

Choose the required amount of materials individually, taking into account the dimensions of the future decorative fireplace. Drywall construction can have a wide variety of sizes. When choosing a particular option, be guided by the available space and personal preferences.

Drywall sheets

The set of necessary tools includes:

  • screwdriver;
  • electric drill;
  • scissors for cutting metal;
  • level;
  • roulette.

The second stage is the installation of the frame

First step. Apply markings on the walls and floor for the installation of profiles. Work according to the drawing. Place labels taking into account the selected dimensions of the fireplace.

Second step. Fasten the guides along the marked lines. If fixing to a concrete surface, first attach the profile to the base, drill holes according to the marking, insert dowels into them and then attach the guides.

Third step. Install the racks into the rails. Fasten the products with self-tapping screws.

Before fastening the profiles, it is recommended to check the evenness of the wall with a plumb line. If deviations are found, fix the guides using straight hangers. These products will allow the installation of products strictly vertically.

First, assemble the frame for the entire structure, then for the portal with a recess under the "firebox". To make the base more rigid, connect long horizontal profiles and vertical posts with additional jumpers.

frame

If desired, you can give the furnace opening a curly shape. To do this, it is enough to carefully cut through the stiffeners of the mounting profile and bend the product in accordance with your idea.

The third stage - facing the frame with drywall

How to fix drywall to the profile

Mark the sheet according to the dimensions of the fireplace and cut out the necessary details. For cutting material, it is most convenient to use an electric jigsaw. If this is not available, cut with a simple wallpaper knife. In this case, you will first need to cut the cardboard layer on one side of the sheet, carefully break the plate, and then cut the second layer of cardboard.

Fix the trim elements to the frame. Screw the screws into the material so that their hats are slightly recessed. The recommended fastener spacing is 100-150 mm.

Drywall sheets are fixed with self-tapping screws to the frame

There should be no problems with fastening the sheets. Even without such experience, you will be able to cope with the skin. Just remember that drywall is a relatively fragile material, so try not to drop it or apply too much pressure on the screwdriver when screwing in the fasteners.

Stage four - finishing

Having sheathed the frame with drywall sheets, you just have to complete the finishing decoration of the structure. When choosing a finish option, be guided, first of all, by the design features of the room as a whole.

Plasterboard fireplace

Most often, artificial stone, decorative brick and ceramic tiles are used for facing false plasterboard fireplaces. To fix the finishing elements, tile glue or liquid nails are used. When cladding with tiles of the correct form, lay them with the same gaps. For their design, use special plastic crosses.

Finishing option for a decorative fireplace

Brick or stone trim is unlikely to fit into a modern interior. In such a situation, for finishing the fireplace, it is best to use paint or decorative plaster. Previously, the surface must be carefully treated with putty, sealing the joints between the skin elements and eliminating any kind of irregularities. After puttying, the surfaces are additionally cleaned with sandpaper.

Otherwise, when choosing a finish option, be guided by your taste preferences.

In conclusion, you will have to install an electric fireplace in the opening of the "firebox" or finish the free space at your discretion. For example, instead of installing an electric fireplace, you can equip the firebox with warm and soft lighting - a great option for a classic interior. A more modern and bold solution is the design of the “firebox” with the help of a multi-colored LED strip.

You can use a mirror to decorate the back wall of the firebox. Attach it to the surface, and lay out the bottom of the firebox with decorative logs or other material, such as shells and pebbles.

There is a mirror in the firebox

By placing several candles of various shapes and sizes in the firebox, you will create a real fire in your fireplace.

Preparatory work

It is worth noting that the false fireplace is a portal of impressive size, which is properly decorated inside and out. This portal can become a separate decorative element or a frame for an electric fireplace that gives warmth, a biofireplace that allows you to create a real fire in the furnace. If a portal is created for a bio-fireplace in which a real fire will burn, then you should carefully consider the choice of materials for the firebox, since they must be fireproof. If a false fireplace is designed to decorate an electric fireplace, then the size of its firebox must correspond to the dimensions of the device. Additionally, electrical wiring should be carried out and sockets should be placed in the area of \u200b\u200bthe proposed structure.

A well-drawn sketch and detailed dimensions of the future product will help you correctly navigate the amount of building material. Everything you need should be purchased at construction stores, while some fireplace parts, such as fasteners or hardware, can be searched at home.

Application of chipboard

Chipboard will become a strong and easy-to-use material for creating a structure. In our case, the laminated version is perfect - chipboard, which will minimize the finishing of the future false fireplace.

The only drawback that immediately comes to mind when chipboard is used is its vulnerable appearance. Care should be taken when storing the elements of the plate and building a structure from it, so as not to damage the laminated surface, since it will no longer be possible to repair it.

Cutting the material into pieces of the required size can be done independently, or ordered from a suitable furniture workshop. If we are talking about chipboard or plywood, then doing the work yourself is not difficult, the main thing is to use a good electric jigsaw. With laminated material it is a little more difficult, here it is important not only to cut, but also to take into account the pattern of the fibers, so it is more convenient and easier to order the cutting of the sheet into the desired pieces in the workshop. Moreover, you will not need to take away a huge sheet of laminated chipboard, you will immediately pick up the finished elements.

Portal for a fireplace made of laminated chipboard

In addition, you should ask to process the edges of the slab so that the elements look monolithic. At home, edge processing can also be done, for this an iron and a special tape are used. However, the accuracy of this method is entirely up to you. When you have all the structural elements, fasteners and hardware on hand, you should proceed with the assembly:

  • Focusing on the sketch, it is necessary to prepare the frame of the false fireplace. It is most convenient to put it together from a bar or fasten it from a metal profile. When assembling a fireplace with your own hands from improvised materials, you should pay attention to the rigidity of the structure and its solidity, therefore we securely fasten the frame to the wall and floor.
  • Then the resulting structure should be sheathed with chopped chipboard parts. When performing work, you must be extremely careful not to damage the decorative coating.
  • If the cabinet for the fireplace is made of laminated chipboard, then further decoration will affect only its inner part, while creating a false portal for the fireplace from ordinary chipboard or plywood with your own hands, you should be puzzled by finishing the structure. Finishing a false fireplace can be done with different materials, for example, you can paste over the structure with plastic brick-like panels or wallpaper with a similar pattern, or use a decorative stone that is glued to the portal for mortar. It is acceptable to use ceramic tiles, mosaics and other tiles, especially if you plan to install a bio-burner inside the portal. If you stick to the wooden style, then in specialized stores you can roll the corresponding wooden elements with carved patterns and decorate your decorative fireplace with them. Subsequently, wooden elements can be coated with stain, varnish.
  • At the final stage, you should decorate the false fireplace insert. There are many ways to make an artificial fire, but you can also do without it, for example, by placing decorative firewood in niches or by placing candles. Everything here will depend on your imagination and the thoroughness of the approach.

wooden version

If you want to build a more solid structure, you can build a decorative fireplace made of wood. A tree is understood as a bar and a board. It is perfectly acceptable to build a fireplace out of wood with your own hands, because, as in the case of chipboard and plywood, there are no particular difficulties in this.

Tools and hardware

The method of assembling a wooden structure is as follows:

  • A correct and well-formed drawing will allow you to purchase the necessary material and saw it into parts. If you make a short description and indicate the dimensions of each element, it will be even easier to assemble a false fireplace.
  • Next, the main frame is assembled from a bar, to which the remaining elements are attached. When assembling a fireplace from boards with your own hands, you should use several methods of fastening materials: somewhere tongues, somewhere gluing, and somewhere connecting with hardware. The connection is selected based on the required strength and influence on the entire structure.
  • If you put together the entire portal from the boards, then it will turn out to be too massive, so in some places we use plywood. To make the wooden false fireplace look decent, we create decorative elements, moldings from the bars and nail them to the frame.
  • When the body is assembled, you can begin to finish it. How to finish a false fireplace, the easiest option is to paint it with white paint in several layers. It will turn out a stately building of a classic look. You can use the methods described earlier, they will also be relevant.

To make your fake wood fireplace look complete, you should start decorating its firebox. The best option in this case is the use of natural and decorative accessories, for example, you can fill a niche with fir branches, cones and candles, or put real dry firewood.

Styrofoam fake fireplace

  • Building a fireplace from sheets and pieces of foam is perhaps the easiest. This is a malleable material with which it is very easy to work, create various volumetric images, interesting contours. In addition, the cost of foam sheets is low, so we do not need a large budget for the construction of such a structure. In order to build a foam fireplace with our own hands, we need:
  • Large cardboard box, or large sheets of cardboard. From this material it will be possible to make a strong frame. If you take a box from a refrigerator or other massive household appliances, you can build a large structure that will be very similar to the original.
  • Foam sheets, usually they have a thickness in the region of 1-1.5 centimeters.
  • Adhesive tape or crepe (painting tape), glue, construction knife, tape measure, marker, to create a strong structure of the correct shape, measuring tools are required.
  • Putty and paint for the final processing of the finished fireplace layout.
  • Decorative elements made of foam or polyurethane, in order to make a frame and a decent appearance.

In order for the product to turn out to be the right size and shape, before starting work, you should measure the place allocated for the foam plastic fireplace, make a drawing or a general sketch. The shape and appearance of a false fireplace can be peeped on the Internet.

  • Easy-to-build artificial fireplace Having a ready-made drawing, it will be easy to transfer it to the prepared cardboard. A common frame is created from cardboard. The inside of the cardboard box is cut and folded inward, thus achieving the desired volume. If you want to make an angular version, then the cardboard will have to be carefully marked and cut according to a more complex pattern. Using adhesive tape and glue, the design is fixed. Pay attention that it stands exactly on the floor, and does not fall to the side. Make a strong base.

When the frame is ready, it is pasted over with foam, which is cut into pieces from sheets. Thus, the desired volume and shape of the future fireplace is obtained. As a countertop, which is placed on top of the structure, you can also use foam, or saw off a piece of plywood.

To consolidate the result, the foam fireplace is puttied. This can be done with a universal putty, which is sold at any hardware store. Now, to complete the image, it remains only to paint the resulting foam portal. Odorless acrylic or water-based paints are perfect for coloring. You can make any color, or you can leave the standard white.

Finishing work on a false fireplace, you should decorate it. This can be done using plastic and polyurethane elements. For example, glue a beautiful molding around the perimeter, and decorative elements in the form of columns or other types of stucco from the edges. Fireplace moldings, moldings, corners and other decorative elements are bought at any hardware store.

Ready-to-use fake fireplace

If you want to finish a false fireplace made of cardboard and foam so that it looks like a real brick one, then you can use three options:

  • Paste it with plastic panels imitating brick or stonework.
  • Paste the frame with vinyl wallpaper with a similar pattern. In extreme cases, paper counterparts.
  • Apply a pattern of brickwork with improvised means. At the final stage of work, we decorate the area inside the portal, as well as the area around it.

  • The firebox of a foam fireplace is filled in different ways:
  • The easiest option is to draw a fire on the canvas and pin it inside.
  • It is easy to make artificial fire with a fan and a cloth.
  • If you want the firebox to glow, just place an LED garlan or electric candles in it. To enhance the glow effect, you can place mirrors in the firebox by gluing them to the walls.
  • Filling the cavity with decorative firewood and spruce branches, we get a pleasant appearance and a light coniferous aroma.
  • Beautiful stones, fir cones, real firewood are often used.
  • Ultimately, you can always put beautiful candles inside, and a candelabra next to the artificial fireplace.

Corner raised fireplace

Preparatory measures The design of a false fireplace, whether it is angular or rectangular, usually involves the presence of two basic elements: a portal and an apparatus inside. A massive structure is called a portal, designed to imitate a stove, and a biofireplace burner or an electric fireplace can act as an apparatus. In principle, you can not install the device inside, then it is easy to decorate the firebox with firewood, candles, spruce branches or other decorative elements.

The most reliable, strong, but at the same time easy-to-handle material from which you can build your portal, fireplace frame, is drywall. This material is easy to use, light in weight and versatile.

In the future, any decorative coating can be easily fixed to the drywall base: tiles, mosaics, gypsum moldings, plastic panels with imitation of brickwork, and whatever. Before starting work, it is advisable to choose a suitable place where the false fireplace would fit perfectly. Many people choose a corner fireplace because it takes up less space. An excellent solution would be to place the dummy opposite the front door in an unused corner. With this arrangement, the fireplace immediately becomes the main focus in the interior of the room, the center of attention.

A simple sketch of a future fireplace

At the final stage of preparation, the necessary tools for construction and suitable building materials should be collected. Let's briefly go over the materials, you will certainly need:

  • Metal profile for the construction of a frame for drywall.
  • To make a solid structure, you will need self-tapping screws for metal and wood to fix drywall.
  • Drywall for sheathing the frame and creating a false fireplace shape.
  • To align the corners, recesses from the screws, plaster is required.
  • A primer is required to prepare for tiling. Before painting, it is also better to prime the drywall.
  • At the preparation stage, you should decide how the finishing will be done and purchase the appropriate material: tiles, plastic panels, mosaics.

Additionally, you may need various decorative elements: corners, moldings and more.

Successful placement of an imitation of a real fireplace

To make a drywall corner fireplace, you will need a construction tool:

  • For marking, you will need a pencil or marker, ruler, tape measure, level, plumb line.
  • For basic work, you will need a screwdriver, a puncher, an electric jigsaw, a construction knife, metal shears, pliers, a screwdriver, a hammer.
  • Other tools may come in handy, it all depends on the complexity of the design and the methods of finishing it.

Step-by-step instructions will help you navigate the methodology of construction work:

Fixing a metal profile to the floor and wall

  • At the first stage, we need to make markings on the floor and wall, based on a drawing or sketch of a fireplace made in paper form. To better see the markup, use a marker, and for accuracy, use a ruler and a level. It is very important not to make serious mistakes when marking.
  • If you plan to install an electrical appliance inside the corner portal of your false fireplace, then you need to bring electricity to the corner. The easiest way is to make a socket behind the fireplace, where an electric fireplace or other built-in device will be connected.

The fireplace takes shape

  • The markup is ready, we do further work with our own hands. We take a metal profile and build the necessary structure from it. We use the floor and walls as the basis for fastening. If necessary, make rounded elements, cut the profile and bend it.

Gypsum-boarded fireplace frame

  • When the frame is built, we start working with drywall. We need to cut a large sheet into small parts according to the dimensions in the drawing, and then attach these pieces of drywall to a metal frame. As we have already said, when making a corner fireplace from drywall with your own hands, you need to carefully monitor the dimensions so as not to waste the material in vain. Note that the self-tapping screws should be screwed to the end and even sunk a little into soft drywall so that their hats are not visible later.

Finishing the fireplace with suitable decorative materials

  • When the drywall is fixed, it is necessary to take putty and finalize the image of the fireplace, its shape. It is necessary to cover the recesses of the screws, make even corners and joints. When the putty dries, using a knife and sandpaper, the surface can be made more ideal. Finally, it is necessary to treat the drywall and putty with a primer to make it easier to fix the finishing materials, or to paint the resulting false fireplace.

Finishing the outside of the fireplace is completed

  • Having built the foundation of the structure, you can proceed directly to its external and internal decoration. It's better to start with the firebox. If you plan to install any device inside, then you should make the appropriate finish. For example, if a biofireplace burner or real candles are installed, then the base should be strengthened by laying tiles down, and finish the inside of the firebox with heat-resistant material, asbestos, steel. If the firebox is empty, the finish can be made at will from any materials.

The appearance of the corner fireplace in the room

  • After the firebox, we move on to the main outer part. To finish the corner fireplace, you can use ceramic tiles, stone or its imitation, plastic panels, siding, there are many options. Decorative material is glued to the frame with glue. Such glue usually dries for about a day.
  • A countertop should be installed on the top of the frame, you can choose a wooden or stone version, depending on your preferences. In the future, you can place decorative items, souvenirs on this tabletop.

Filling the fireplace insert with decorative elements

Note that in addition to expensive finishing materials, there are quite budget options. For example, a fireplace in the corner of a room can simply be painted in a suitable color, the easiest option is white. Drywall, even primed, absorbs moisture well, so you will have to paint in two layers. You can paste over the frame with a self-adhesive film with a suitable pattern or color. The film is not the most practical option, besides, we recommend choosing a German manufacturer, since the Chinese one has too big quality problems (it constantly peels off at the joints and in the corners).

The appearance of the corner raised fireplace in the living room

Upon completion of construction, the necessary parting should be installed in the furnace: a biofireplace or an electric fireplace. An interesting option with placing a photo frame inside the firebox, on which there will be an image of a real fire.

Candles in the firebox are always in place, they can be real or artificial, for example, in the form of a kind of garland that gives a pleasant flicker. Decorative firewood fits perfectly into such a concept, which you can also do with your own hands, or buy ready-made options.

You can build a corner raised fireplace with your own hands not only from drywall, simple options are very popular when the structure is made from ordinary cardboard boxes.

Cardboard option

Recently, false fireplaces made of cardboard, in particular from suitable cardboard boxes, have been very popular. It is very convenient to make yourself a decorative New Year's fireplace from boxes that will support the festive mood, and then it will be dismantled.

Large boxes are considered the best material for creativity, for example, from a TV, furniture, refrigerator or other large household appliances. Making the corner version is a little more complicated than a simple rectangular one, because here you have to rack your brains a bit, developing the technology for cutting and gluing the box.

As always, the Internet will be a great helper, where you can find relevant pictures or watch a suitable video. If we briefly consider the construction technology of such a structure, then it does not differ much from the one described above.

Instructions for creating a cardboard corner fireplace

  • At the first stage, we prepare a suitable box, cut it in the right places, bend it and fix it with tape or masking tape.
  • Next, paint in the desired color, or wrap it in paper to give the design a monochromatic look.
  • Decorating can be done again with the help of paper, it is permissible to use foam plastic, plastic elements. If you have the ability to draw, then it is quite possible to apply suitable graphics to the outside of the fireplace.
  • By placing appropriate decorative elements inside the false fireplace and around it, we get a finished look.

To recreate the flickering of fire, you can put a garland inside an impromptu firebox. Artificial firewood will help to hide it, which can be made from the same cardboard by rolling it into a tube. For greater realism, glue cardboard knots to the firewood. You can hide a bright garland using natural decorative materials, for example, by putting fir branches and cones in the firebox, and additionally placing candles.

In extreme cases, you can simply draw a fire on paper and put this drawing in the furnace. It will not be very elegant, but such an idea will help to support the general concept of comfort.

Symbolic false fireplace (painted fireplace)

This is more of a painting on the wall than a full-fledged structure. It can be made from ordinary ceiling plinths, indicating only the shape, without depth.

Without a doubt, a beautifully designed fireplace portal fits perfectly into any living room interior. And it doesn’t matter that this is a snag, because not every owner of a private house, not to mention the residents of apartments, is able to build a real wood-burning hearth with a chimney. But anyone can make a false fireplace with their own hands, and how to do it right - read our material.

How to make an artificial fireplace

The first thing that comes to mind is to fold a fake portal and a brick firebox in order to achieve maximum similarity with the original. The idea is not too good, because such a building will cost a pretty penny and, in addition, will load the ceiling. Imitation of brickwork can be implemented in other, cheaper ways, for example, to assemble a wooden frame, sheathe it and then tile it under any artificial stone. But first things first.

The manufacture of the pseudo-hearth takes place in 2 stages - the assembly of the main structure and the lining. To make a portal, home craftsmen most often use the following materials:

  • drywall sheets on a frame made of metal or wood;
  • Chipboard laminated and plain;
  • plywood, fiberboard;
  • polyfoam, expanded polystyrene extruded.

Reference. A fake hearth for the New Year holidays can even be built from cardboard. How to make a similar fireplace out of cardboard boxes is described in.

Styrofoam raised fireplace with decor made of polyurethane elements

A fireplace portal assembled from drywall is the most popular design. It allows you to use a variety of types of cladding - wallpaper, polyurethane moldings, tiles and decorative plaster. There are quite a few design options for such homemade products. It is much more difficult to glue a false fireplace made of plywood or chipboard with tiles, and polymeric materials are afraid of mechanical damage (for example, from cat claws).

Design selection and drawing creation

If you decide to make an imitation of a classic English or other fireplace yourself, then first determine its place. The choice of one of the two existing designs also depends on this:

  • wall-mounted;
  • angular.

An artificial portal of the first type is placed near a free section of the wall, usually in the living room. Often it is placed in the middle of the room, and suspended plasma is fixed on top. If the mantel rests on a metal frame, then desktop TV models can be placed on it, as shown in the photo.

Reference. Sometimes, with the help of false foci, it is possible to solve 2 issues at once - to decorate the room and hide the old terrible-looking heating radiator, which is done in the photo:

Corner versions save space and fit well into various rooms - a hall, a bedroom, and even a nursery. Building such a layout is somewhat more difficult, but the result is impressive.

After choosing a place and design, determine the size of the portal and its niche, simulating a firebox. The width and height of the recess for the hearth should look proportional to the external dimensions of the product, which you assign arbitrarily. As an example, we suggest taking a drawing of a decorative fireplace with an arched vault, you can use it to make your own sketch.

The dimensions of the corner structure are also taken arbitrarily, except for situations where it is necessary to build an electric fireplace with flame imitation inside the portal. Then design the size of the firebox according to its dimensions, as is done below in the drawing. Also take care of bringing electricity to the future false fireplace and install an outlet.

How to make a fake drywall fireplace

To make a simple fireplace portal from GKL, you will need the following materials:

  • galvanized UD and CD profiles or wooden beams;
  • drywall sheets;
  • plate for countertops;
  • fasteners - dowel-nails and self-tapping screws 16 mm long.

Installation of steel profiles by marking

Advice. When installing an electric fireplace, it is better to sheathe the opening imitating the firebox with GKLO brand plasterboard (fire-resistant, painted pink).

Frame assembly from profiles

First, mark the wall and cut the materials into blanks. To do this, draw the outline of the future portal on the wall with a pencil, using the building level to determine the vertical and horizontal. Then work in accordance with the following step-by-step instructions:

  1. Cut the UD profiles to size and attach them to the wall with dowels, as shown in the photo. Install the racks and horizontal jumpers, fastening them together with self-tapping screws.
  2. Assemble the frame with the step from CD profiles and screw it to the floor. The arched vault of the hearth is formed from a rail, which must be cut and carefully bent, and then fixed to the frame.
  3. Sheathe the frame with GKL sheets on self-tapping screws, whose hats should be recessed into the drywall. For an electric fireplace, provide air openings on the sides and a hole for wiring.
  4. Install the tabletop and screw it to the frame.

Sheathing the frame with plasterboard sheets

Note. The inner lining of the arched vault is made of segments of drywall strips. Their ends should be hidden behind the front panel.

After assembly, it remains only to veneer your decorative fireplace, made by yourself. The most popular finishing option is imitation of natural stone and brick using tiles. If you do not want to buy it, then cut the foam bricks and glue the portal, and paint it with acrylic on top. Another common method is gluing with fake columns and polyurethane stucco. A detailed description of the installation of a drywall raised fireplace is presented in the video:

The order of assembly of the corner structure does not differ from the wall structure, only the frame is formed differently - the profiles are joined at an acute angle, as can be seen in the photo. The second point is the triangular shape of the upper shelf, otherwise there is no difference.

Corner pseudo-fireplace frame

Hearth from an old chest of drawers

A false fireplace can also be made from old furniture made from chipboard. Let's consider an example of a sideboard with a built-in mirror, which will serve as an element of decor. The height of the building is not a hindrance; after the alteration, it will begin to resemble an outdoor stove with a shelf for laying firewood, arranged at the bottom of the firebox.

We turn the old sideboard into a large pseudo-fireplace

Now about the order of work step by step:

  1. Remove doors and other fittings from the chest of drawers. If it is equipped with additional side sections, then simply cut them to the desired size.
  2. Form a fireplace opening from boards, chipboard sheets or plywood, screwing them to the sides of the sideboard with screws. Make the bottom shelf the same way.
  3. From above, pin a tabletop that protrudes 3-5 cm beyond the dimensions of the cabinet. If desired, make a pedestal for a false fireplace.
  4. Fill all cracks with wood filler, and after drying, level it with sandpaper. Then stick polyurethane molding on the body and paint.

Note. To finish the portal, you can use any materials that are planted on glue - plastic, polystyrene, various decorative panels.

Making an artificial fireplace

One of the common options is a fake candle fireplace with a mirror on the back wall of the opening. It is implemented simply: candles are placed in front of the glass, on the top shelf and on the pedestal, which are set on fire on holidays. The decoration can be supplemented with dummies of firewood and an iron grate. The latter is bent according to a drawn pattern of thick aluminum wire inserted into a PVC tube. At the end, the grille is painted with bronze paint.

A few words about how to make an imitation of a flame. We have already talked about an electric fireplace, but there are other ways:

  • lay a red or yellow LED strip on the bottom of the firebox strewn with pebbles;
  • install a safe alcohol burner in the opening (their decorative models are commercially available);
  • use an electronic photo frame with an LCD display, where a GIF image of a flame is loaded, after which it is placed in a fireplace niche.

This is how the LED strip imitates fire

How to make an artificial eco-fireplace with a real flame from an alcohol burner is available on the video:

Conclusion

Let's omit the hackneyed phrases about the ease of making a false fireplace with your own hands, and instead give a little advice. When you decide to throw away pieces of furniture, an old TV or a mirror, first think about whether you can make an imitation of a fireplace. The drywall system is a beautiful and reliable option, but at the same time expensive, and unnecessary things are a free resource. Those in whose possessions there are city apartments, probably somewhere in the depths of their souls there is not enough crackling firewood in the home interior. But, this is not at all a reason to deny yourself such pleasure, limiting yourself from the fireplace, near which you can sit comfortably on a frosty evening.

After all, do-it-yourself decorative false fireplaces can bring no less comfort and warmth to your home. Especially if they are equipped with an imitation of a flame, as well as an electric furnace.

Note. When creating a false fireplace, you may need lumber, the site https://faneramonolit.ru/katalog-pilomaterialov/ presents the largest range at affordable prices.

How to make a fake fireplace step by step

This is quite a simple procedure. For manufacturing, you will need to make a sketch, which, by the way, you can draw yourself! Any building materials will do. You can use drywall on a metal/wood frame.

Polyurethane, porcelain stoneware, tiles, MDF. You can come up with absolutely any shape of your fireplace, for example, imitate a classic hearth, or create an original design that will be complemented by other decorative elements. There are many DIY ideas on this site.

polyurethane

The fastest way to make your own decorative fireplace is to purchase a ready-made polyurethane portal. The thing is that today the store offers a wide range of different portals, among which it is absolutely not problematic to choose the right style, dimensions for your home.

Electric fireplaces can be built into such a design, for which you need to know what its dimensions are (dimensions and installation). It is also important to know what are the requirements regarding ventilation, as well as connection to electricity.

When deciding to install a false fireplace made of polyurethane, you can use the photos of false fireplaces in our catalog, thanks to which you will surely make the right choice faster.

To perform this version of the fireplace, you need a shop polyurethane portal, a contact type of glue, putty, finishing materials for the firebox like decorative bricks.

Installation process:

  • Choose a place where the false fireplace will be installed. It is advisable to install it on one of the side walls in the room, because in this way you will achieve maximum harmony. At the same time, the fireplace should not become an obstacle to movement in the room.
  • You need to think in advance whether your portal will have an electric fireplace, as well as lighting. To do this, you need to run wires and make an outlet nearby.
  • Using wooden bars, you should make a frame. Also for a profile with a wall, plywood or plasterboard is suitable.
  • The portal should be installed. Then secure with contact adhesive. Gently putty the gaps using the finishing type of putty.
  • Install an electric fireplace, finish the firebox in accordance with the preferred style of interior design. Turn on the backlight if necessary. If your fireplace is classically styled, lighting with soft and warm tones is ideal. In other cases, an LED strip can be used.

Backlight

If you are not going to install an electric fireplace, decorate the back of your structure with a mirror. Lay decorated logs on the bottom / fill it with stones, shells, glass balls.

You can make a perfectly safe fire inside your fireplace. To do this, install candles with different shapes and heights in the firebox.

Decorating the back of the fireplace

The portal can be decorated using paint, patina, gilding, or using decorative elements. The fireplace mantel can be installed in wood/artificial stone.

Ready-made portals are made of polyurethane, wood. They are much more expensive in value, at the same time, among them you can find the most incredible masterpieces. For example, a bar can be equipped inside.

Plasterboard false fireplace

If after the repair work you still have a profile or plasterboard, use it! This option will be not only excellent, but also very inexpensive. And the design will fit into a niche / corner of any type. It can also become an element of a real shelf composition.

For such a structure, you will need: wood beams, galvanized plasterboard profile, trimming plasterboard, plywood sheets, a screwdriver, a jigsaw, scissors for metal carving, putty, acrylic-based paint, brick / decorative stone look.

This is the manufacturing process. In advance, it is imperative to think over a sketch of the fireplace, on which all dimensions will be indicated, including the junction of the frame parts. It is important to measure the room, to decide where exactly the fireplace will stand. Then the required amount of material is calculated.

The frame is made from a profile, its elements are interconnected by self-tapping screws. The profile is cut with a hacksaw / scissors. In order for all elements to be the most stable, they should be connected by transverse types of jumpers. If your structure is too large, then its frame should be attached to the floor and walls. After all, if it is heavy, or just narrow, the fireplace will be completely unstable. GKL should be cut out in accordance with the sketch, then make a fitting, trim if necessary and fasten with knee black self-tapping screws directly to the profile. The self-tapping caps should be slightly deepened so that puttying is not problematic in the future. GKL is quite easy to cut with a knife.

Then the sheets are screwed to the frame. At the joints and fixing points, it should be puttied, leveled with putty intended for interior work, in two layers. The corners should be reinforced with paint mesh.

Then you should putty the edges with the joints of the plasterboard. Align the surfaces on the sheets, if necessary, use putty. The structure needs to be painted. Also, for decoration, you need to use other materials, such as artificial stone, tiles, stucco moldings. You need to glue on a special glue, which is diluted strictly according to the instructions.

The firebox is made out of brickwork, or a mirror is installed on the back wall of the structure.

You can also install candles inside the firebox, or install an imitation hearth with backlighting.

A false fireplace is a completely safe design that can be installed even in children's rooms. In this case, you can use the mantel as a stand for photo frames, toys and other things.

ADVICE: According to the same scheme, you can make it from both durable cardboard and drywall!

If you're ready to get started, let's get started!

  • 11 wooden blocks 244 cm x 5 cm x 10 cm
  • 1 piece of wood 305 cm x 5 cm x 15 cm
  • Faux brick panel measuring 122 cm x 244 cm
  • 2 MDF panels measuring 122 cm x 244 cm and 1.3 cm thick

  • Wooden plank measuring 244 cm x 1.9 cm x 1.9 cm
  • Screws 3.8 cm long
  • screwdriver
  • Screws 7.6 cm long
  • Screws 2.5 cm long
  • Drill
  • Drill
  • wood glue
  • Paint and putty
  • Brush and spatula
  • Sander

Step 1: Making the Frame of the Raised Fireplace

To begin with, let's create a frame - the "skeleton" of the false fireplace design. It consists of three main parts: back, front and base of the bottom.

Cutting:

  • First, let's cut the details for back of the frame, which will be on the side of the wall. You will need two 160cm bars for the top and bottom, four 137cm bars for the side members, and one 106.7cm bar for the bottom support piece (see photo below).

  • Then we cut out the details for front of the fireplace. To do this, you will need (again) to cut two 160 cm long top and bottom boards, 4 137 cm side boards, a 112 cm lintel, and a 160 cm front bottom (the last of the 5 cm x 15 cm board).

  • Now cut out the pieces for bottom base. For the top and bottom you will need two 160 cm long bars, and for the side joints four 19.7 cm long bars.

Assembly:

To create the frame, we will twist everything together using 7.6 cm screws and wood glue (for extra strength).

Let's start with assembly bottom bases:

  1. Put one of bars 160 cm long and attach a short bar at the ends.
  2. Note: hereinafter, by the term “attach”, we will understand the following sequence of actions: we apply wood glue to the bars, glue them together, and then fix this position with screws.
  3. Then measure from each end of a long bar of 38 cm and mark a line. Place a short bar on the inside of each line (that is, with one edge of the bar touching the line, but the bar is located closer to the center from it) and attach.

Now let's build back:

  1. Start by attaching two 137 cm long bars to the edges of the 160 cm long bar, which in this case serves as the bottom of the frame.
  2. Now from the outer edge of the bottom bar measure 19.7cm and draw a line.
  3. Place two more side bars along the marked lines closer to the center (as in the previous case with the transverse part of the frame) and attach.
  4. Then attach the top.

At this point, the back of the frame should look like like this:

Now let's add a support bar (106.7 cm) to the bottom of the back frame. Position it in the center so that the same distances to the side bars remain, apply glue and secure with a clamp so that the bar does not move out. Then fix with screws.

Now let's start building front of the fireplace.

  1. Lay two side bars long 137 cm, and between them a bar 112 cm long(the latter must be put on the wider side, as in the photo).
  2. On the sides, measure 24 cm and mark the line. Install a jumper over these lines and attach to the side pieces.
  3. Attach the top and lower bars 160 cm long to the side bars so that they come out the same distance on both sides. It should look like in the photos:

Now we attach the two remaining side parts (as pictured):

At the bottom of the frame you need to attach a bar measuring 160 cm x 10 cm x 15 cm. Here's what happens:

Compound:

We have already made three separate parts, and now we need to connect them together. As connecting elements, we need six bars measuring 30.5 cm x 5 cm x 10 cm, and one bar measuring 14 cm x 5 cm x 10 cm. They are shown in the photo below. And also a bar measuring 112 cm x 5 cm x 15 cm.

Take the front and back of the fireplace and place them on the ground with the front on top. Now take a 14 cm long piece of wood and attach it between the wide board at the bottom of the front frame and the support board at the bottom of the back frame. It must be located center - see photo .

Now add fasteners at the bottom of the sides. To do this, we need two 30.5 cm long bars. Since so far the front and back frame are connected only in one place at the bottom, before attaching these side bars, make sure that the frames lie flat on top of each other. Attach the bars, as in the photo(on the other hand as well):

Take a 112cm x 5cm x 15cm piece of wood and attach it to the back of the jumper on the front of the frame. Add additional screws through the side bars.

Now take the base frame of the bottom and attach it to the bars connecting the front and back frames. Like this:

Add two more connecting bars on the sides so that they reach the top of the base frame, as in the photo:

Now take the last two bars, 30.5 cm long, and insert them into the gap that formed after attaching the bottom base frame (symmetrically on both sides). Attach with screws on the side.

This completes the frame for the fireplace and you can proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Making the fireplace mantel

Now it's time to sheathe the fireplace with MDF or plywood panels. We need pieces of these sizes:

  • 28.5 cm x 170 cm, 17.8 cm x 115 cm - 2 pieces,
  • 26.7 cm x 99 cm - 2 pieces,
  • 17.8 cm x 99 cm - 2 pieces,
  • 28.5 cm x 30.5 cm - 2 pieces.

Now you need to cut out the part to cover the top of the bottom of the fireplace. It can be made from a sheet of MDF or chipboard (stronger). First you need a rectangle measuring 35.5 cm x 177.8 cm.

Now this the rectangle needs to be transformed as follows:

  • step back on one of the long sides from the edge of 9 cm and measure 24 cm from this point, measure 17.8 cm upwards from both points, you get a small rectangle (outline the same from the other edge).
  • These two rectangles need to be cut out to get this board:

  • Cut out from MDF 6 sticks size 2.5 cm x 19 cm, and one measuring 2.5 cm x 167.6 cm. The photo below shows some of them:

We will also need a 21.6 cm x 109.2 cm rectangle. This is for the bottom of the fireplace.

  • Also cut a sheet of 170cm x 28cm for the front cover and 26.7cm x 177.8cm for the top.
  • And further 2 pieces measuring 21.6 cm x 28 cm.

Fireplace assembly

Now we will mount all this on the fireplace. Let's start by attaching the top to the bottom of the fireplace. The notches of the board should be around the side columns. Fasten the structure with screws.

Then take 2 pieces measuring 28.5 cm x 30.5 cm and attach them to the bottom sides. Then take a sheet measuring 28.5 cm x 170 cm and attach it to the lower front of the fireplace. Here's what happens:

Mounting columns

Your fireplace should now look like this:

In order for the coating to have a certain relief, we will add bars 2.5 cm wide.

  • From the top of the fireplace, measure 26.7 cm and mark a line.
  • Below this line, attach two 2.5cm x 19cm pieces to the outside of the columns to create a 2.5cm high relief.
  • Then take the 2.5cm x 167.6cm piece and attach it to the front so that it overlaps the sides.

Now we will use two other bars measuring 2.5 cm x 19 cm and a sheet measuring 21.6 cm x 109.2 cm. The sheet must be attached directly above the relief bar, thus making a partition between the columns. And attach two small pieces above the sheet to the inside of each column.

Now attach the cover on top of the front:

Take the last two pieces of 2.5 cm x 19 cm and attach them to the top of the columns, as shown in the photo:

Then attach the 21.6 cm x 28 cm side covers on both sides:

And the last part of this stage - we fix the upper part of the coating with a size of 26.7 cm x 177.8 cm. Make sure that the coating comes out the same size on the sides.

The main covering of the fireplace is ready! Hooray!

Step 3: Finishing the Raised Fireplace

Now that the design of the fireplace is created, we will work on its appearance. Let's add the relief details of the fireplace, paint it, and generally put it in order.

For further actions, we need to cut the materials into such pieces:

  1. For front: 4 pieces measuring 5 cm x 27.3 cm, 4 pieces measuring 5 cm x 39.7 cm, and 2 pieces measuring 5 cm x 72.4 cm.
  2. For sides: 4 pieces measuring 5 cm x 23 cm, 2 measuring 5 cm x 27.3 cm, and 2 measuring 3.8 cm x 27.3 cm.
  3. Also for the columns you need: 4 pieces measuring 3.8 cm x 21.6 cm and 4 measuring 3.8 cm x 87.6 cm.
  4. In addition, you will need 20 boards measuring 7.6 cm x 19 cm.

You also need to make one plank 177.8 cm long and cut off the ends in it at an angle of 45 degrees. Two short strips should be 26.7 cm long and only one needs to be cut in each of them end at a 45 degree angle.

The panel imitating brickwork should be 122 cm x 93.3 cm. To avoid the standard "brick" color, the panel can be painted white (we'll do that here).

Fastening

Now that all the details are ready, you can attach them to the structure fireplace!

  • Let's start with the lower front part, we will fasten the parts from left to right.
  • At the left end, attach a 5 cm x 27.3 cm block (it should extend 1.3 cm over the edge so that it fits well with the overlay side bars later).
  • Then attach two 5cm x 39.7cm pieces perpendicular to the first piece.
  • Now attach the next 5 cm x 27.3 cm vertical bar, and perpendicular to it two 5 cm x 72.4 cm horizontal ones.
  • Then another vertical block measuring 5 cm x 27.3 cm, and again two horizontal bars measuring 5 cm x 72.4 cm.
  • And finally, the last vertical bar measuring 5 cm x 27.3 cm.

Now we will work on the sides. Take a 3.8 cm x 27.3 cm block and attach it vertically on the left edge of the side. Next, attach two 5cm x 23cm horizontal bars at the top and bottom, and another 5cm x 27.3cm vertical one. Repeat the same for the other side.

Column plating

Now we will sheathe the columns. Start by attaching a 5 cm x 87.6 cm bar to the left front of the vertical column (it should extend 1.3 cm over the edge). Add 5cm x 19cm horizontal bars to the top and bottom of the front of the column, and then another vertical one (this one will also extend over the edge).

To sheathe the sides of the columns, first attach a 3.8cm x 87.6cm vertical piece to the left. Then add 5cm x 10cm horizontal pieces to the top and bottom, and finally another 5cm x 87.6cm vertical piece. Repeat this process for the outer and inner sides of both columns.

Now we will make additional reliefs on the front of the columns. Attach two 3.8cm x 87.6cm pieces vertically to the sides, and then add 3.8cm x 21.6cm horizontal bars.

Now, to finish the front of the columns, you will need 20 boards measuring 7.6 cm x 19 cm. You can start fastening either from above or below, it does not matter. To get the same distance between the boards when fastening, you can insert 2 coins as separators. You may need to cut the last board to fit. Do this for both columns.

This is how it should look like in the end :

Now let's deal with the top of the fireplace.

  1. Take a piece of wood with a 1.9cm x 1.9cm square cross-cut and stick it right under the fireplace top board (front and sides).
  2. Then attach a 5cm x 172.7cm piece of wood from the front directly below the newly attached piece.
  3. On the sides you get a protrusion of 1.3 cm on each side. Then take four 5cm x 16cm pieces and attach them vertically.
  4. Start at one end and attach in such a way that the bar protrudes 1.3 cm over the edge, that is, ends flush with the top horizontal bar 172.7 cm long.
  5. Measure 26.7cm and attach another 5cm x 16cm piece. Do this on each side. Then attach a second 5cm x 172.7cm horizontal piece to the bottom.

Next, we need to sheathe the sides of the top of the fireplace.

  1. Take a 5 cm x 23 cm block and attach it horizontally (under the block with a 1.9 cm x 1.9 cm cut and butt against the 1.3 cm protruding blocks from the front).
  2. Now attach a 3.8 cm x 16 cm vertical bar.
  3. Add a second 5cm x 23cm piece to the bottom piece and complete this side by adding the last 5cm x 23cm piece.

Repeat on the other side.

To complete the trim, attach the front and sides to the top battens (the ones with the 1.9 cm x 1.9 cm cut) the battens cut lengthwise. at an angle of 45 degrees (that is, with a triangular cut).

After attaching all the details of the skin, you need to apply putty to close up all the holes, and then level the surface with grinding. Now the fireplace is finally possible paint it white!

After the paint is completely dry, attach the faux brick panel to the back using 2.5 cm screws.

Remove any gaps you want to fill:

Step 4: Fastening

The design of this fireplace is quite stable in itself, but additional fastening to the wall still does not hurt. This can be done in several ways, here we will use a homemade wooden bracket.

We will need:

  • 1 bar measuring 2.5 cm x 3.8 cm x 106.7 cm
  • 1 bar measuring 2.5 cm x 5 cm x 106.7 cm.

Join these two pieces together in an "L" shape, with the 5cm x 106.7cm piece vertical.

Attach this bracket to the wall. Mounting height depends on whether your fireplace will be on carpet or just on the floor. When we move the fireplace against the wall, the bracket should touch the bottom board of the upper part of the fireplace from the inside, that is, be above the “brickwork”. Here is the bracket at a distance of 120 cm from the floor:

The fireplace with the bracket must be connected with screws from the side of the lower board of the upper part of the fireplace. Put a few logs of firewood on the bottom for decoration and you're done!

On top of the fireplace for decor, you can put a few magazines and put figurines or candles. It turned out a wonderful decoration for the hall and the apartment as a whole!

Many residents of city apartments want to equip their home with an island of warmth and comfort. For many, owning a real fireplace remains an unattainable pleasure, it is difficult and unsafe to implement such a project, and gas and electric fireplaces are also not always appropriate. False fireplace - a hearth that does not require firewood, an imitation of a real fireplace, performs a predominantly decorative function. It is safe, beautiful and multifunctional, and the cost of its construction is minimal.

3 types of raised fireplace designs

  1. Stationary;
  2. Mobile;
  3. Flat.

Stationary false fireplaces are often designed at the stage of finishing the premises. The basis of the structure, as a rule, is a frame made of timber or metal profiles. Sheathe the fireplace with boards, drywall, plywood, tile or artificial stone.

The mobile design is also convenient, it can be rearranged from place to place, decorated with carvings, glass, wood, stained-glass windows, and so on. A flat fireplace is a pseudo hearth; an imitation of a facade is created on the wall using a decorative frame. By the way, the hearth can also be painted, as in the well-known fairy tale about Pinocchio and the Golden Key. There are many options for decorating a false fireplace, let's talk about the most interesting ideas.

10 most popular design ideas for false fireplaces in the interior of apartments
