Unpretentious flowers for the loggia. What flowers to plant on the balcony on the south or north side. Bougainvillea - light-loving plant for the balcony

Unfortunately, not all plants are suitable for the sunny side: so you should choose the right flowers for your balcony. There is one simple hint lying on the surface - on the sunny side you need to grow flowers that are not afraid of the aggressive sun. Namely, those that grow in southern cities, in flower beds, without any protection from the external environment.

Sunny side: what flowers to plant

If you have been to resorts, you probably noticed the lushness of simple, but such bright, beautiful flowers. They also create a special atmosphere of the southern city. It is these plants that need to be grown on a sunny balcony. It is worth dwelling in more detail on the brightest representatives of this group.

Petunia is called the "queen of balconies": therefore, it is perfect for the sunny side

Flowers for the sunny side:

  1. Nasturtium. Easily tolerates the sun, will bloom until frost. One of the most common drought-resistant plants. You can plant a low-growing type of nasturtium, but someone also likes tall representatives of this plant, reaching several meters in length.
  2. Geranium. There are representatives of this species that tolerate heat well. This is a zonal or ivy geranium. True, the latter does not like the wind.
  3. Petunia. Take the type of petunia that is distinguished by small-leaved forms, if you like ampelous petunias, they do not like the wind. Variety "Typhoon" is the best for balconies and loggias.
  4. Purslane. Suitable ground cover plant, very unpretentious in care. It will bloom from July to the end of September. This flower grows on light sandy soil, loves the sun so much that after it sets it simply closes.

One of the main disadvantages of zonal geraniums is an unpleasant smell.

Indoor plants for the south balcony

Among this list of flowers, and it will be large, we can highlight those that require minimal maintenance.

Kalanchoe grows in the tropics and subtropics: that is why it is not affected by sunlight

Such plants will take root perfectly on the southern balcony.:

Flowers for the balcony east side: what to choose

The peculiarity of the eastern side is that it receives its sun in the morning (and the western, for comparison, in the evening). The gentle sun is a very good bonus for an amateur grower, and especially for a beginner who does not yet know all the nuances of growing flowers.

Geranium prevents weeds and other harmful plants from growing

The most popular plants for the east side:

Northern part: what to grow on this side

The north side has natural shading, so you should not expect lush flower beds there. Do not try to plant purslane on the north side - to no avail. But begonia and fuchsia will take root quite well on such a balcony.

Oleander has a mild and sweet scent

In order to somehow brighten up a not very active flowering, you need to choose plants with a variegated color.

Also suitable for the northern balcony:

  • Cissus;
  • Zebrina;
  • Oleander;

To somehow enliven the background of the northern balcony, choose flowers with a bright color, for example, the vertical walls of ampelopsis or ivy.

Climbing plants for the balcony: what to choose

If the balcony is not glazed, you'd better stop at unpretentious, hardy plants. In order for the plants to look good, choose them according to the contrasting principle - they should not merge with the wall.

It is best to combine different flowers on the balcony: this one will create a special, romantic interior.

You can take ivy on a shaded balcony, it can withstand even strong winds, but there is no frost resistance at all. But girlish grapes are good for everyone, so it will feel great on the northern balcony.

The southern balcony will be decorated with wisteria and climbing roses, but rather, they are good for the southern regions.

For a sunny, always well-lit balcony, you can choose: Chinese magnolia vine, ornamental beans, morning glory, honeysuckle, actinidia.

Ampelous plants for the balcony: what will give the balcony a twist

If we are talking about ampelous plants, then they can create a special atmosphere on the balcony. True, for this you need to be able to collect beautiful flower arrangements.

If we are talking about a sunny balcony, then verbena, petunia, ageratum, bidens, diascia are most suitable for it.

Types of climbing plants (video)

On a sunny balcony is the place for unpretentious, drought-resistant, bright colors. Experiment, create compositions that are interesting in color, bright combinations, unexpected tandems, and the beauty created by your own hands will delight both you and random passers-by.

The balcony is that part of the apartment that is located on the street, and therefore it is often used by many residents only as a storage room - for storing unnecessary and old things that, most likely, will never be useful in everyday life. But with the onset of spring, the balcony can be turned into a wonderful flower garden, the most romantic and bright part of your home. And if leeks and pepper seedlings are the only vegetation you decorate your balcony with, then it's time to fix it.

Flowers help in the design of the apartment, emphasize its features and bring a note of romance, fabulousness and cheerfulness to the life of its inhabitants. The choice of specific varieties of the future flower garden depends on the location of your apartment relative to the sun (shady or sunny side), and on which floor your apartment is located. But the most important, of course, criterion is your likes and dislikes.

Territory preparation

Of course, for the future winter garden need to prepare a place, at least carry out cosmetic repairs. Think in advance which varieties of flowers will make up the balcony composition in order to choose the right paint for the railings and the floor, which will harmoniously blend with the bouquet. Flowers should not merge with the background of the walls.

Decide which part of the balcony you are ready to give for landscaping, maybe it will be only one box, or maybe most of your loggia. If you want your flower garden to be admired by passers-by from the street, prepare and strengthen the railing, calculate the weight of pots and boxes of earth so as not to overload them. Be especially careful if you are the owner of an old balcony, don't overload it, remember that a harmonious and elegant composition can be made with a small amount of balcony flowers.

Depending on the size of the balcony itself

Choose for a flower garden appropriate size containers so that their volume allows the root system to develop freely. It can be planters, wooden boxes, pots made of both plastic and clay.

Lightweight plastic boxes and pots are ideal for planting flowers on the outside of a balcony. Such compositions look especially beautiful in one long box. If there is a possibility that the structure may not withstand and break, then in this case several light meter pots are used. To decorate the outside of the balcony, buy boxes immediately with pallets, because in their absence, excess liquid will drain through the holes in the bottom right onto the heads of passers-by.

Clay pots are more comfortable for flowers, because the moisture stays in them longer and the soil is better saturated with oxygen. But due to their impressive weight, it is better to put such pots inside the balcony and grow larger and more whimsical plants in them.

For small and medium sized balconies perfect fit pots- they are suspended from the ceiling and can create complex multi-stage compositions by adjusting their height - after all, you yourself decide at what distance from the ceiling to fix the pots.

Be careful with the choice of soil, purchase it only in large, specialized stores, or do it yourself using good black soil with sand and humus. Before you start filling the pot with earth, lay a special dishcloth on the bottom of the pot, it will serve as an excellent layer in order to absorb water, maintaining moisture in the soil. Next, lay out the drainage layer - coarse sand, on top of which humus is laid out and on it - black soil.

Choice of colors

Flowers may vary in lifespan.

Annuals

Such flowers live only one season, but many southern varieties in their native countries can live several seasons. Therefore, if your balcony is glazed, insulated and the flowers themselves receive proper care, such varieties and in the conditions of your loggia can please you for several years in a row. When caring for such plants, do not forget to cut the faded heads in time, then the rapid flowering will delight you for a long time.

In order for your little garden to bloom as early as possible, most annuals grown seedlings.

Not so popular for breeding on the balcony. The fact is that in the first year these plants develop only their stems and leaves and remain in a green state, and flowers are given only in the second year. In addition, biennial varieties are much smaller than the rest, and with improper care, such flowers can live not for 2 years, but for only a few months.

If you want to see your favorite biennial plant in a flower ensemble, plant it in a pot in the first year and keep in the apartment. And in the second year, transplant into a common box with the rest of the flowers, forming the desired balcony composition.

The most popular balcony biennials are forget-me-not, viola, and, of course, daisy.

Also not so popular among flower growers. Main problem associated with their breeding is that in winter it is difficult to preserve the root system of flowers and prevent them from freezing. For this reason, you have to look for a warm place where you can move the boxes with plants "for the winter". Of course, the exceptions are those perennial flowers that are grown in separate pots and are simply brought into the apartment for the winter.

But, despite these difficulties, many people like to decorate their balconies with perennial flowers, preferring grapes, creepers, climbing roses, which are easily cut and wrapped up for the winter.

One of the varieties of perennials are bulbous flowers, the cultivation of which is not difficult. Planted in boxes in the fall, it is the bulbous ones that are the first to open the spring season on the loggias, delighting their owners with bright, rich colors and aromas. Daffodils, tulips, hyacinths are especially favorite varieties of bulbous flowers.

Flowers for the sunny side

The choice of flowers and their varieties largely depends on the location of the balcony and degree of illumination. Most of them are very thermophilic and it will not be difficult to arrange a flower arrangement on the southern balcony. For loggias located on the sunny side, asters, petunias, purslane, asters, nasturtiums are ideal. Choose any southern flowers.

Flowers on the balcony

To get a fragrant oasis in your own apartment, you should know what flowers to plant on the balcony. Even in urban environments, you can create a blooming garden. A large selection of plants suitable for this will allow you to create original compositions that will work the look.

Lighting Features

You can plant a variety of flowers on the balcony. But you need to remember that each plant has its own characteristics, so it is important to choose the right varieties. The main thing to pay attention to is the location of the balcony. Well, if it is not too high. On the upper floors of high-rise buildings, there is a strong wind that can harm plants, breaking them and tearing off sheets. In this case, it is better to grow on a glazed balcony.

It is very important on which side the loggia is located - on the north, south, east or west. This depends on the lighting. The sunny side is best suited for flowers. But not all plants tolerate the rays of the sun well, some have burns on the leaves. At the same time, many flowers in the shade are strongly stretched and bloom poorly. Therefore, if the question arose of how to decorate a balcony with flowers, first of all it is necessary to assess how much sunlight the plants will receive. This will allow you to choose the right varieties.

Plants for the sunny side

If the balcony is located on the south side, then it is open to bright sunlight for most of the day. It is important that the plants are thermophilic. It is also great if they are drought tolerant, then missed watering will not turn into a tragedy.

The most popular flowers that are easy to grow in a loggia are petunias. They come in a wide variety of shapes and colors, so a small home garden will look very striking.
Two types are common:
  • If you are interested in growing climbing flowers for a balcony, then you should pay attention to the ampelous varieties. Their stems fall beautifully from hanging planters and special boxes.
  • Bushy varieties. You should choose multi-colored. Varieties with one stem, on top of which there are several flowers, are not the best solution for a balcony.

A wonderful solution for the loggia will be pelargonium. Another name for this plant is geranium. Flowers may be red or white. As in the case of petunia, there are bush and ampelous varieties. Geranium looks beautiful in combination with other plants.

One of the most undemanding plants that will take root perfectly on an open balcony on the sunny side is marigolds. They are easy to obtain from seeds or by seedlings, they bloom from the very beginning of summer until autumn frosts. For a home garden, undersized terry and semi-double species are best suited.
Blooming purslane can also be considered a good solution. It is able to do without water for a long time, as it accumulates moisture in the leaves. With it, you can create a real flower paradise, because the flowers are very bright and have different colors.

You can grow in a balcony and other plants. Curly flowers will create a light shade, so that the place will become especially cozy in the summer heat. Ipomoea, tunbergia, or decorative beans are suitable for this.

Beautiful compositions will be obtained if low varieties are used for this. For the sunny side, it is worth giving preference to snapdragon, which will give an unusual aroma, asters, nasturtiums, lobelia, nasturtiums.

Flowers for the north balcony

Ivy and fern are great for growing on a shady balcony. They create interesting green landscapes. Carved fern leaves look spectacular at any time of the year. They are good for decorating the lower tiers of the loggia.

For lovers of bright colors, the question is which flower to plant on the balcony to bloom. The ideal solution is a tuberous or ever-blooming begonia.

The variety of these colors allows you to select unusual combinations. There are flowers of different shades of red and yellow. They can be double or semi-double, large or small, but growing in clusters. The plant will bloom for a long time - all summer and even part of autumn. To do this, it is important to water it regularly, it is desirable that moisture does not fall on the leaves. Begonia does not like overflowing, the drainage must be good enough so that the tubers do not rot.

A sunny balcony can be shaded with climbing plants. Then the choice of flowers that can be grown on it will increase.

Fuchsia is also a good option for a shady balcony. Frequent flowering and a variety of shades can bewitch. It is worth decorating the loggia with the help of ampelous varieties planted in hanging planters. Fuchsia is demanding for watering. The ground should be moderately moist and overflow should be avoided.
Hosta will create amazing green areas. In addition, this plant blooms magnificently.

Many annuals are also suitable for the shady side. Unpretentious marigolds are able to grow in the shade, forget-me-nots, verbena, carnation or levka will look very beautiful.

Balconies on other sides and conservatory

Growing flowers on a balcony located on the east or west side is not difficult. After all, here are the mildest conditions: the plants receive a lot of sunlight, but there is enough gentle shade. Most flowers that can grow on a south or north side will thrive in partial shade. Decorated with petunias, fuchsias, pelargoniums, daisies, calendula, dahlias and many other varieties, the balcony will be a wonderful place to relax.

On the glazed balcony, you can arrange a real winter garden. You just need to take care of the insulation and think over the lighting. The choice of colors in this case is almost unlimited. If desired, it will be possible to provide year-round flowering. This option may also be successful in the conditions of a glazed loggia, since you do not have to be afraid of the wind.

Flower care on the balcony

Growing flowers on the balcony, photos of which are so pleasing to the eye, requires certain knowledge. Picking the best varieties based on lighting is not enough.

There are two ways to grow flowers on a balcony in boxes. In the first case, flowers are planted in one row, alternating varieties with different colors. In the second, upright varieties are combined, they must be planted in the background, and ampelous, they are placed in the front.

Planted plants must be properly cared for. You need to follow the following rules:

If the balcony is on the side where the rays of the sun shine almost constantly, then it is better to put light pots. They heat up less, which makes it easier to care for plants.

On the balcony you can grow a wide variety of flowers. The abundance of colors and pleasant aroma will make this corner of the apartment surprisingly cozy. You just need to choose the right varieties and take some time to care.

You can talk about design canons for a long time, but every day the existing canons become less and less stable. Aesthetics and harmony, balance, colors, materials, brought together in order to get such a long-awaited result are the essence of your knowledge, practice and self-development. My motto is to learn, see, touch something new every day, and I am sure that this is the only way to keep the right course in “high design”.

Often, balconies facing the north side hear unflattering words addressed to them and turn into a warehouse of things from the “it’s a pity to throw away” category. Today I will try to prove that even such a balcony can be successfully transformed into a garden for green pets.

Illumination and temperature

When choosing a place for plants, it is important to consider two factors - light and temperature.

Illumination is measured with a luxmeter, if you don’t have such a device in your arsenal, do a simple analysis of the source data and answer the questions:

  • What is the area of the part?
  • What double-glazed windows are installed?
  • How close are neighboring houses and trees to the balcony?

If the northern balcony has large enough glazing and is located in the southern region, you get a good platform for growing flowers. But balconies with modest windows on the first floors put forward serious requirements for the selection of plants, but even here you can successfully grow sansevier, chlorophytum and some annuals.

In summer and spring, the daylight hours are long, so even the northern balconies can boast of a sufficient level due to diffused and reflected sunlight. You can safely move small-leaved ficuses, dracaena, cordilina, pelargoniums, petunias and date palms here.

If you plan to turn the north balcony into a winter garden and plant potted flowers in it, I advise you to equip additional artificial lighting, without which it will be very difficult for tropical houseplants.

With sense, with feeling, with arrangement we choose flowers for a balcony

So it's time to go in search of an answer to the question of what flowers to plant on the balcony on the north side.

Among my favorites, I would recommend paying attention to violets, fuchsias, cyclamen and spathiphyllum. If you are leaning towards amaryllis, take a look at hippeastrum, clivia, zephyranthes. The last group has one secret - the flower buds in the bulb are laid in the summer, only at this time the plant needs a lot of light, they can spend the rest of their life cycle in the shade and at the same time delight you with flowering.

Deciduous plants

Among the deciduous group, ferns belong to the shade-loving category. Remember where we often meet them in the natural environment? That's right, in the shady forests.

So that the fern is not bored, pick up a company of maidenhair, nephrolepis, zamiokulkas and chlorophytum for him. Aspidistra is completely unpretentious, it can grow not only on the northern balcony, but also away from the light.

If you can boast of a large balcony area or a wide window sill, take a closer look at dieffenbachia, alocasia, syngonium - plants of the Aroid family.

Anthurium and Aeschinanthus will delight you with lush greenery, but they will not bloom.

Palm trees and ivy

If you are in the mood for arranging a winter garden and you cannot do without large plants, opt for the bamboo hamedorea palm. Perfectly adapts to the lack of light and hibiscus (Chinese rose).

Among a group of climbers on a checked balcony, hoya and cissus will feel good.

No matter how beautiful the variegated ivy is, you will have to refuse to place it in a shady place. Plants with multi-colored leaves lose their brightness without sunlight.

Warm or cold

When choosing plants, the temperature regime that is kept on the balcony is also important.

Warm northern balconies

Shade-tolerant, unpretentious plants are selected for cultivation, which feel great in the temperature range from +18 to +20 ° С. Unfortunately, there are few such representatives of the green world, however, when arranging additional lighting, you can safely grow the lion's share of the assortment for warm western and eastern balconies.

I offer you 4 plants that I would put on my balcony:

  1. Dihorisandra or golden mustache is native to America. In addition to its attractive appearance and unpretentiousness, it is famous for its healing properties and use in traditional medicine.
  1. Ruellia requires warmth and moderate light. Will delight you with abundant greenery if you monitor the level of humidity, otherwise the leaves become inconspicuous and dull.

  1. You have at your disposal many types of ficus, the most popular are lyre-shaped, oak-leaved and sacred. The plant requires annual pruning and transplanting, sprinkled with crushed wood ash powder.
  2. I am sure that you are familiar with chlorophytum. He is valued for positive energy and the ability to purify the air. If you choose Cape, Crested or Winged Chlorophytum, remember that it will need an annual transplant.

Cold rolled balconies

Yes, yes, even on such a balcony you can successfully grow flowers with your own hands. Which? Let's take a look at the table.

Name Instructions and recommendations
Evergreen araucaria When planting it, you have a chance to get a piece of coniferous forest on your own balcony, and on New Year's Eve, turn it into a traditional Christmas tree.

To obtain a uniform crown, install the plant at the maximum distance from the wall, window and other plants. Araucaria prefers to live alone and reacts very painfully to any neighborhood.

Cypress and cypress will help create an attractive composition.

Hydrangea A fairly hardy plant, but will require a little more attention from you during flowering. Peduncles have an impressive mass, so they require tying.

The hydrangea has a poor "immunity", so it often suffers from fungal diseases. For preventive purposes, I recommend watering the soil twice a year with a weak fungicide solution.

Myrtle A symbol of family well-being, which, if properly trimmed, can turn into a fancy ball, cone or pyramid.

Aucuba An exotic plant that is grown in pairs. With artificial pollination of flower stalks, you can get berries that resemble red dogwood.

Interesting fact! Japanese aucuba has long oval leaves that are dotted with golden spots. For this appearance, the plant is often called the "sausage tree".

Shadows are coming

If your balcony has been captured by absolute shade, refuse to grow flowering perennials, your choice is modest decorative leafy plants. They are not so spectacular, but they have the most important quality - shade tolerance.

Plants for shady balconies are conditionally divided into 2 groups:

  1. Shade-loving plants in the sun develop much worse than in shade conditions, the leaves burn easily, change their natural shade. In this group, there is a place for most varieties of hostas, ferns, periwinkle, dodecatheon.
  2. Shade-tolerant - a category of green pets who are ready to put up with the lack of light. They would not mind getting a slightly higher degree of insolation, but they have to be content with the conditions that they have. Prominent representatives are astilba, aquilegia and viola.

deep shadow

I'll start, perhaps, with the most difficult conditions for flowers - with a deep shadow. For your balcony flower bed, you can choose a female nomad, a shield and an ostrich, these forms of fern will create a voluminous background for spring ephemera, primroses, hosts.

The Spartan group includes the pygmy hoof, it can serve as a background for flowers and perfectly masks the “bald spots” in the balcony flower garden with a dense green rug.

You can plant hostas in an individual tub, for example, the Queen of the Seas, Blue Mouse Ears and Deep Blue Sea varieties with leathery dense leaves in blue or green shades.

Unlike their green-blue relatives, most variegated hostas are very sensitive to lack of light, in deep shade they lose their color and become monochromatic.

Shadow

For this shady zone, the list of plants is expanding significantly, in addition to the “lovers of darkness” described above, you can look at variegated hosts with white, yellow, golden edging of leaves.

In June-August, the plant turns from decorative leafy into flowering. In the center of the bush on long stems, flowers of white, cream and purple are revealed.

Quite quickly, the periwinkle grows in the shade, covering the tub with dense leaves and small flowers of white, blue, purple, red and pink shades. Shade-tolerant grasses, hostas and ferns can grow on a periwinkle carpet.

Dicentra magnificent is indifferent to the sun, but requires moist soil, under these conditions it will delight you with heart-shaped flowers of bright pink color.

If you have large-sized plants planted in tubs, plant ephemeroid plants under them, for example, anemones, crocuses, corydalis, muscari or blueberries. In such conditions, the garden orchid "lady's slipper" will feel great. They prefer moist, nutritious soils and considerable shade.

Garden orchids are demanding on the choice of neighbors, planting astilbe and tiarella is optimal.

Penumbra

Plants for the north balcony, which will grow in partial shade, must withstand up to 6 hours in the sun. In such conditions, violas, aquilegia, aconites, rhododendron and bergenia develop well.

Among annuals, pay attention to lobelia, torenia, petunias and balsams.

Summing up

Turning a balcony into a flower bed or a mini-garden is a fascinating business. First, you transfer potted flowers there from the windowsill, then you equip a couple of tubs for large-sized ones, find a place for a one-year-old flower bed and that's it, you can't be stopped, and is it worth it?

Well, now it's your turn to share ideas for arranging a balcony, and it remains for me to offer you an interesting video in this article.

There is one simple hint that lies on the surface - on the sunny side you need to grow flowers that are not afraid of the aggressive sun. Namely, those that grow in southern cities, in flower beds, without any protection from the external environment.
