How to tint a wooden floor before varnishing. Parquet tinting. Applying a tint

Parquet tinting allows you to protect the floor from mechanical influences and moisture, as well as change or emphasize the color. Even the cheapest wood can be turned into something beautiful and extraordinary.

What is the best way to tint

The main materials for tinting parquet are:

  • butter;
  • stain;
  • special coloring systems;
  • wax.

Butter

Oil is a universal remedy. It is used not only for tinting parquet, but also for furniture, walls, doors and much more.

Attention ! Since the floor is constantly subjected to heavy loads and friction, the oil must be selected with a high degree of wear resistance.

Parquet tinting with oil is done in 2 or even 3 layers (if it is not prohibited by the coating manufacturer). Otherwise, it is recommended to use a two-component oil or hard wax oil.

The choice of oil also depends on the type of wood. So, for example, if the parquet is made of exotic species, then a special oil will be required that penetrates deep into the pores. If covered with ordinary oil, it will dry for a very long time, due to the presence of oil pockets in such types of wood.

Oil Benefits:

  • due to deep penetration into the pores, the wood is reliably protected not only from the outside, but also from the inside;
  • there is no surface film like varnish, as a result, parquet can breathe;
  • does not begin to crack and peel over time;
  • can be used in rooms without heating;
  • No sanding required between multiple coats
  • large range of colors, can also be mixed to obtain a new shade;
  • long service life;
  • environmentally friendly and safe product;
  • no sanding required before re-coating.

Disadvantages:

  • after tinting the parquet with oil, it will not be possible to cover it with something else, for example, varnish, since the oil penetrates into the pores of the wood;
  • every six months or a year, a partial or complete renewal of the coverage will be required.

Oil types:

  • one-component;
  • two-component;
  • one-component with hard wax.

The basis of one-component oil are soy, sunflower, linseed oils. This oil is used mainly in places with a light load or for furniture.

For the floor, use only a highly resistant oil and apply in several coats.

Two-component oils consist of the same oils, but with the addition of polyurethane. Thanks to the latter, the oil dries faster, but the period of work with the mixture is reduced.

One-component oil with hard wax has the same composition, but with the addition of wax. Such an oil has good performance characteristics, since the oil penetrates deep into the wood, and the wax covers the surface with a thin film through which the parquet can breathe.

The tinting process consists of two parts, first a colored oil is applied, and then a colorless one.

Oiled parquet requires some maintenance. Once every six months, the floor must be wiped with a soft cloth with a special agent, and once every three years, tint again with the same oil. Or you can only do a complete tinting of the parquet once a year.

Important ! Before tinting, the parquet must be washed with detergents, but not containing alkali (it is better to buy such detergents in the same place where the oil was purchased).

Daily care includes cleaning with a vacuum cleaner and a damp cloth.

varnish

Parquet tinting with varnish also allows you to change the color of the parquet. You can tint immediately with colored varnish or add a certain color to a colorless varnish.

In order for the color to be richer, many layers are applied.

The varnish does not penetrate into the structure of the wood. Therefore, if there is a desire to change the color, then the parquet should simply be sanded, completely removing the previous layer.

The disadvantage of the lacquer coating is that it is unstable to constant loads. In addition, it does not allow the wood to breathe. If water gets under it, the varnish begins to fall off.

It is also very difficult to apply varnish evenly at the joints (it is desirable that the tinting be carried out by a person with experience in this field).

wood stain

Parquet tinting with stain allows you to emphasize the natural beauty of the wood structure (transparent tinting). The parquet will be not only bright and saturated, but also protected from most influences.

The stain is applied in three layers. In this case, the first and second layers should dry for three days, and the last one for a week. Then the surface is washed and coated with a double layer of varnish.

The disadvantage of such tinting is that the wood has a different structure, as a result, the color of the parquet is uneven.

Special color systems

The advantage of coloring systems is a long drying time at the time of application, resulting in a better coating.

After tinting, it is necessary to wait until the impregnation is absorbed, and then it is processed by a professional machine for uniform and complete absorption.

One of the most popular is the Bona Create staining system. It has a homogeneous composition, due to which spots do not form. It can be stored, even when opened, for a long time. The basis of its composition is wood oil.

It is available in nine basic shades that can be mixed to obtain the desired shade.

Parquet tinting with Bona Create is of high quality and lasts a long time.

Color selection

Advice ! When choosing a color, check it on the parquet that is already ready for tinting to make sure that the shade is suitable for this room (furniture, walls, wallpaper, ceiling).

The white color of parquet tinting is gaining more and more popularity. After all, this color is always in fashion and is combined with a large number of styles in design. In addition, if the room is small, then it will visually increase. Dust is almost imperceptible on white parquet.

If you choose a dark color, then the walls and ceiling must be of a lighter shade, otherwise the room will be too dark. It is often not recommended to tint parquet in black or very dark colors, since even small scratches on it will be very noticeable. But if the parquet is very old, then it is the rich dark color that will hide all the flaws (chocolate, dark chestnut, and so on).

Shades of red will bring coziness and warmth to the room (cherry, mahogany, etc.).

Gray tinted color in combination with beige tones will help to make any room calm and very comfortable. It can also be combined with black and white colors.

Brown tint is suitable for almost any room design.

Preparation and application technology

The first stage is looping. With the help of a special machine, the floor surface is cleaned of dirt and old coatings.

At the second stage, the parquet surface with coarse grain is polished. Further, the grain size is gradually reduced.

At the same time, each wood needs to be sanded with an individual approach, due to the fact that they have a different structure and age. If the wood is sanded with too coarse a grain, then scratches will be noticeable after tinting the parquet, and if it is made with too fine a grain, then the impregnation will be poorly absorbed. As a result, the color of the parquet will turn out to be inconspicuous.

Oak parquet and ash parquet are the easiest to process, while beech and pear parquet is very difficult.

The third stage is putty and again grinding (to remove excess putty).

The fourth stage is cleaning from dust and washing the surface.

The final stage is the tinting of the parquet. Tinting is applied with a brush, roller, spatula (depending on the chosen product and instructions for it), and then processed with a special single-disk machine. You can do parquet tinting only with your own hands, without using special equipment, but this way the work will take much longer, and the end result may not be of the best quality.

When choosing the type of flooring, most of us still choose wood, whether it is strip parquet, parquet or solid board. Even against the background of modern materials developed using the latest technologies, this traditional material looks quite worthy and is not going to give up its positions.
Well, if you have already decided on the material, you just have to choose the color of the floor, which will be the perfect solution for your project. And since hiding the natural structure of the tree under opaque paint is a real crime, choose which tinting method you choose.

Simple but effective. Toning using stains.

Let's start with the cheapest and most popular way to tint. You can change the color of the floor using wood stains (special liquids for impregnating wood). The main goal of such toning is to give inexpensive wood (pine, ash, birch, oak) a nobler and brighter color and at the same time emphasize the texture of the tree. There are many varieties of stains, differing primarily in the type of base (water, alcohol, various oils or other non-aqueous solvents), as well as the shade that they give to the finished product (most often, the name of the stain indicates which type of wood it ultimately imitates such as mahogany or ebony, bog oak, maple or larch).

The disadvantage that limits the use of stains is the heterogeneity of the final color. The intensity of the tone on the treated surface can vary greatly depending on the quality of the sanding, the type of wood, the age of the wood used and, of course, the method of application of the composition. It is impossible to cover a large area of the floor with one movement of the brush, and in those places where the strokes overlap, the color intensity will be much higher.

In addition, spots may well appear on the surface due to the heterogeneity of the wood structure, and all streaks or splashes formed during inaccurate application cannot be erased or painted over, they will remain on the surface forever. It is also impossible to accurately predict the color that the parquet will take after toning, be sure to test the stain on a separate bar.

Two in one. Let's combine tinting with varnishing.

In most cases, the final stage of parquet processing is its varnishing. It is a thin, durable layer of varnish that protects the parquet from micro-scratches, protects the wooden surface from the negative effects of moisture and dirt, and at the same time emphasizes the individual beauty of each parquet board or plank. Well, colored varnishes will easily take over the performance of such an additional task as tinting. Modern manufacturers offer the widest palette of colored varnishes that will allow you to embody any design fantasy in the interior. There are over 2000 shades on the market, including completely radical greens, raspberries and bright blues.

We list the main advantages of tinting floors using colored varnishes.
Firstly, already in the process of applying colored varnish, it is possible to choose the desired intensity of tinting by varying the number of layers of colored and colorless varnish.
Secondly, if you need to update the interior, the color of the varnish can be changed at any time, because the varnish, unlike oils and stains, is not absorbed into the tree and does not change its structure.
Thirdly, the result of tinting with colored varnishes is much more predictable, because it practically does not depend on the absorbent properties of wood.

There is, however, this type of tinting and a significant drawback. During operation, the varnish coating is erased unevenly and after a couple of years, lighter paths may appear on the floor tinted with colored varnish, and only highly qualified craftsmen will help get rid of them. To avoid this, be sure to apply two layers of colorless varnish over the colored varnish and renew them periodically, not allowing these protective layers to wear off.

Once and forever. We tint with colored oils or waxes.

Those who appreciate environmental friendliness and naturalness in wooden floors and dream of touching wood with their feet, and not a layer of varnish, choose oil or wax as a coating. This way of caring for parquet can be combined with tinting. Manufacturers offer special dyes that can be added to oil or heated wax, as well as ready-made colored oils and waxes.

These coatings are applied using special brushes or brushes, and then rubbed and polished with special single-disk polishing machines. A few hours later, after the first layer of oil dries, the procedure is repeated. How many layers of oil or wax are needed can only be determined by experience, each wood absorbs them differently (softwoods usually absorb worse than hardwoods).

Like parquet, covered with colored lacquer, the floor, tinted with oil, in places that are used most actively, gradually brightens, but the difference in tones in this case is much easier to correct. It is enough to clean the brightened areas and re-cover them with several layers of tinted oil. Do not be alarmed if the new coating will stand out slightly, after a few weeks the difference will completely smooth out. An important point: oil and wax penetrate deep into the wood, and it is almost impossible to remove them later from the surface of the parquet, so if you decide to change the oil to varnish, you will have to change it along with the parquet.

To restore the boards to their original color, renew their appearance and preserve the texture of the wood, the parquet is tinted. There are several options for implementing such a procedure and oil, varnish and stain are more often used. Tinting procedures are simple and you can carry them out yourself.

How to tint parquet?

Updating the coating has a number of advantages: the floor becomes more attractive, minor defects can be masked, and the overall design of the room can also be diversified. Toning, parquet scraping and other similar procedures can be carried out independently, taking into account the basic rules:

  1. The procedure for giving the desired color to the coating should be carried out at the last stage of construction work, that is, after finishing the walls and ceiling.
  2. First, pre-treatment is carried out and it is best to contact specialists for this.
  3. The result of tinting will depend on the material from which the parquet is made.

Oil tinting of parquet

It is a universal substance that gives the parquet a new look. After its application, it will be possible to rub the floor only with special impregnations. Tinted parquet oil can be with wax, one- or two-component. Before using such a tool, you need to make sure that it does not damage the wood. One-component oil is applied in several layers, and the other two options can cover the floor once. The process of tinting parquet is as follows:

  1. Apply a coat of primer oil to the surface first to improve performance.
  2. When it dries, the main layer of oil is applied, which should be thick. It is important to move the brush in the direction of the fibers.
  3. The floor will dry for exactly one day. If after that the color seemed too light, then you can apply another layer.

Parquet tinting varnish

To change the color of the floor, you can use it, which does not penetrate the wood, but creates a film on top. If you want to make the shade more saturated, then you need to apply several layers. It is important to keep in mind that the tinting varnish for parquet is short-lived and after a while it will begin to wear off and crack. The scheme for applying varnish is identical to the instructions presented for oil. After tinting, a layer of colorless varnish should be applied on top.

Toning old parquet

If the coating is already old, then it is recommended to first carry out grinding (sanding). The process is time-consuming and it is better to entrust it to specialists who have the necessary equipment. Parquet scraping with toning is carried out in several stages:

  1. First, the surface is ground with a coarse, granular abrasive. This removes the old coating layer and existing irregularities.
  2. To smooth out minor irregularities, medium-grain sandpaper is used.
  3. To remove traces of previous processing, a fine-grained abrasive is used.
  4. After that putty is applied - a special resin mixed with wood dust formed during grinding.
  5. After drying, another grinding is carried out with a fine abrasive. Then a primer is applied, which is selected for the type of wood.
  6. At the next stage, varnishing and interlayer final grinding are carried out. After removing the dust, the necessary layers of varnish are applied.

Is herringbone parquet tinted?

You can update any parquet and the one that is laid with a herringbone. The methods described above are suitable for tinting, and you can also use stain, which penetrates into the pores of the tree, like oil. It is not suitable for large rooms, as it is absorbed unevenly and the surface may turn out to be spotty. Toning parquet made of beech and other types of wood is carried out as follows:

  1. It is better to use a roller, which, after wetting, should not be wet, but only damp.
  2. Distribute the stain evenly over the surface. To avoid stripes, apply the first layer perpendicular to the parquet, and the second - along.
  3. To get a good result, you need three layers, so the first two should dry for three days, and the last one for at least a week. After that, you can open the floor with varnish.

Parquet tinting - colors

There are several popular color schemes for flooring, which must be selected based on the chosen style of the room. When choosing a color, it is recommended to test it on a part of the parquet flooring to make sure that the shade is suitable.

  1. White tinted parquet is popular because it is suitable for many design styles. Such a floor will visually enlarge the room.
  2. If you choose black or another dark color for tinting, then it is important to consider that scratches will be very noticeable on such a coating and the ceiling with walls should be light. Dark shades are best chosen for old parquet to hide existing flaws.
  3. Toning the parquet in red will give the room comfort and warmth.
  4. Brown is suitable for almost any design.
  5. Bright shades should be chosen carefully and only for modern design styles.
