Do-it-yourself modular frameless sofa from poufs. Frameless sofa - stylish, comfortable and functional (27 photos). Filler - balls for frameless furniture

Mattress-shaped pillows can be used to make an armchair or a whole sofa by connecting them together. Such designs are multivariate: the shape and dimensions depend on the needs and can change, it is enough to attach or remove pillows. And the easily replaceable cover allows you to play with the colors of the furniture, making your sofa out of multi-colored “cubes”. And if the coloring is tired, just change the cover.

Rectangular seat cushions are complemented by cushions or just small sofa cushions. And the elements not used in the design of the sofa will become pouffes. By the way, if you put a solid tabletop (for example, a wooden shield or thick glass) on such a pouf-pillow, you will get another piece of furniture - a coffee table.

A frameless sofa can also be used as a sleeping place: it is enough to “spread out” specially designed pillows for this. The absence of heavy mechanisms will allow even a child to cope with this task.

Soft designs are a good option for kids. There are models created specifically for children's rooms: from the modules you can assemble not only a piece of furniture, but also build a house for games.

Separate elements in such sofas and armchairs are interconnected using conventional textile zippers or Velcro. Therefore, such a design can be made independently, because modern fillers for upholstered furniture are easy to find on sale.

bean bag

Perhaps the most popular type of furniture without a frame is a bean bag or binbag. The name comes from the English words bean and bag, which translates to "bag of beans". They say that the idea to create such a chair by designer Roger Dean was prompted by a farmer who sat down to rest on a bag of beans.

Modern binbags are filled, of course, not with beans, but with polystyrene balls. Due to its design, the bean bag chair is comfortable to sit in any position: it takes the shape of the human body.

Polyurethane foam sofas

Frameless furniture also includes polyurethane foam products. Such sofas and armchairs are not too soft, but the material allows you to do without a rigid support and create any shape.

If a modular sofa is not very difficult to make on your own, then sofas and chairs made of molded polyurethane foam require factory conditions. The liquid material is poured into a mold where it solidifies under pressure through a chemical reaction.

Futons

For a European home, furniture in the form of mattresses is a fairly modern solution. But for a Japanese home, a futon mattress is a common piece of furniture.

In a traditional Japanese home, they sleep on a tatami-covered floor, on a mattress stuffed with cotton wool - a futon. And during the day, bedding is folded and put away in the closet.

In the European version, the futon has been somewhat modernized. There are futon sofas. True, this is not entirely frameless furniture. The futon mattress is not placed directly on the floor, but on a low wooden bench, which, with the help of a simple mechanism, can be turned into an armchair or sofa, depending on the width of the mattress.

A slightly modified semicircular futon mattress can be converted into an armchair without any frame. For this, there are Velcro straps on the back side.

In Japanese traditions, there is another very convenient device - kotatsu. This is a low table in which the frame and top are separated from each other. The frame is covered with a futon or thick blanket, and a countertop is laid on top.

It turns out a table and a heater at the same time. The modern version of the kotatsu is equipped with an electric stove located under the table top on the frame.

Previously, the electric heater was replaced by a brazier with coals in the floor niche. The brazier was used for cooking, then a kotatsu was placed on top and covered with a futon, on top of which a countertop was laid.

Japanese houses are not very insulated, so this design was used as a heating pad: the whole family sat around the table on seat cushions, covering their legs with a futon. The brazier provided heat, which was retained by the kotatsu blanket.

That's where the expression "warm company" came from! Photo from the site cipusa.org

Such a table with a blanket in Japan can be found not only in private homes, but also in trains, restaurants, stadiums and other public places. Of course, it is unusual for us to dine under a blanket, but for a country house, for example, for gatherings in a grill house, kotatsu is very suitable.

Frameless upholstered furniture is diverse, everyone will find an option to their liking. Comfortable and informal, bright and unconventional - such furniture is simply created for giving and country rest.

Do-it-yourself frameless furniture is: an original bed-book, a sofa made of foam modules, a pear-tent chair. Make them yourself.

Frameless furniture: types, materials used

Having made such items with your own hands, you can furnish them with a nursery, bedroom, living room. If you have a cottage, then place these things on the veranda to relax here in a cozy atmosphere.

Here are the types of frameless furniture that exist:

  • ottomans of square or cylindrical shape;
  • bean bags;
  • balls that are in the shape of a circle;
  • cushion chairs;
  • pyramids that perfectly support the head and back;
  • sofas consisting of several;
  • models in the form of toys, for example, animals, flowers;
  • gift option - heart.
For tailoring frameless furniture, textiles are used, if it is a sofa, then thick foam rubber acts as a filler here. The same is suitable for creating models in the shape of a heart, cushion chairs.

For the rest, small foam balls are used, which fill the inside of a particular piece of furniture by 2/3. The filler is placed in the inner bag, a decorative outer one is put on top, for which durable fabrics that hold their shape well are used.

For upholstered frameless furniture, it is better not to take pile material that collects dust and wool.

For the outer case, the following types of material are perfect:

  • jacquard;
  • flock;
  • durable cotton;
  • natural or artificial suede;
  • Oxford;
  • leatherette or genuine leather.

For one product, several outer covers can be sewn, which can be easily removed using a snake lock. Then in winter you can put a warmer cover on it, and in summer use a light cotton one.

The positive properties of granular foam used as a filler are that:
  1. it is very light, so such products are easy to move or move;
  2. an armchair, an ottoman quickly take the form of a seated person;
  3. such balls have high thermal insulation, so products made from them can be used even in winter;
  4. unlike frame models, it is impossible to get hurt (there are no sharp corners), so this furniture is perfect for a child's room.
It's time to proceed directly to the master classes to learn how to make some furnishings.

This product consists of several blocks. Here's what you need to create it:

  • thick foam;
  • furniture fabric;
  • PVA glue;
  • reinforced threads;
  • scissors;
  • ruler;
  • sewing machine;
  • furniture stapler;
  • tape measure.
The seat consists of two blocks, each is created according to the same principle. To do this, cut out 3 identical rectangles of foam rubber, sew these parts together. According to their size, you need to cut out and sew covers, stitch them in the corners.

Here you will put a foam rubber filler, on your hands, sew one side with a hidden seam. Also, from foam rubber, you need to cut out two sheets for the back and 2 for the armrests. For these parts, you also need to sew covers.

We begin to assemble a frameless sofa. Fasten two pillows with a furniture stapler. If there is no such tool, then sew them on your hands so that you can fold them.

Attach the back to them, you can additionally fix it with PVA glue. In the same way, attach the two small sidewalls.

If you want to make a folding sofa like a chair-bed, then make the upper seat block smaller than the lower one, sew a fabric loop on the edge. You will pull for it to expand the sofa.

Such a product can be made one-piece by combining the back with the seat. The cover consists of a rectangle that covers the back, seat, back and bottom. Large sidewalls need to be cut in the form of the letter G in a mirror image. Each of them is sewn to a given rectangle of fabric. The filler is also foam rubber.

Here's how pretty easy it is to make a frameless sofa with your own hands. Make other pieces of similar furniture, for example, the following.

DIY pear chair: pattern and description

A stylish and comfortable product quickly takes the form of a person sitting in it. You can wash the outer cover of this chair periodically to keep the chair clean.

To sew it, you will need:

  • fabric for the top and inner cover;
  • paper to make a pattern;
  • filler in the form of foam balls;
  • 2 zippers;
  • related accessories;
  • sewing machine;
  • scotch;
  • plastic bottle.

To make a bean bag chair pattern is required, it is very simple.

As you can see, for the fabric base, you will need a piece of fabric measuring 2 meters 50 cm with a width of 1 meter 40 cm. The diagram shows how to arrange the parts to save fabric. Cut:
  • 6 pear-shaped wedges;
  • 2 pieces in the form of a trapezoid with rounded smaller sides;
  • 2 semicircular bottom elements;
  • hexagonal top;
  • rectangular handle to carry the product.
This cutting is done on the main fabric, the inner cover is created in the same way.

Here is how the bean bag chair is made further. With your own hands you will connect pear-shaped parts, grind them. Then the bottom elements are sewn together, they need to be sewn to the lower sections of the pear-shaped wedges. In the same way, create an inner cover, leave room for zippers on the side, which you then sew in. Put one bag inside another.

The inner cover is 2/3 filled with polystyrene balls. To pour them into a chair, first place a large bottle with the bottom cut off on top of the filler bag. Attach with tape at the bottom. Insert a knife through the neck, make an incision, the balls will begin to spill into the container. Then it needs to be turned over and lowered into a pear chair.
You can cut out double front and hind legs, bear ears, sew them onto a finished monophonic product. Cut out the round muzzle of the animal from the same fabric, draw eyes, nose, mouth with indelible paints or sew on facial features, having previously cut them out of dark fabric. You will get such a charming bean bag chair in the form of a bear. It will be comfortable for a child of any age. For babies, this product is placed horizontally, the baby will sleep in such a cozy chair.

Frameless book bed

If you like frameless furniture, check out the following piece of furniture. This textile product was invented by Japanese designer Yusuke Suzuki, but our domestic needlewomen will recreate it if desired.

For this they will need:

  • dark dense fabric;
  • light cotton canvas;
  • synthetic sheet filler;
  • foam rubber;
  • sewing machine.
Manufacturing master class:
  1. The dark cloth will become the binding. Cut out two rectangles from it, one will be the bottom, the second - the top of the cover.
  2. This size, but without seam allowances, you will need foam rubber. First, connect the top and bottom of the binding, folding them with their right sides, sew along the edges. Leave one side unsewn. This is where you put the foam.
  3. If you do not have a sewing machine or it is difficult to create such large details on it, then sit on a clean floor, grind the edges by hand, taking a needle with strong threads. In the same way, you will make “sheets” for a book-bed, but from white cotton fabric and fill them with padding polyester, holofiber, or similar sheet-shaped synthetic material.
  4. Put the created elements on the binding, as you can see, from all sides they are about 10 cm smaller than it. Sew in the center on the hands.

This book bed is an excellent bed for two children. Each of them will lie on one "sheet", it will be a sheet, covered with a second "sheet".

If you want to create a small bed, then sew a soft mattress, and make it out of corrugated cardboard. Decide on the width, such a width you need to cut a rectangle from this material, wielding a construction or clerical knife. It should be much longer than the desired length of the bed, as you will fold this blank into an accordion.

When it's time to put the baby to bed, put this part on the floor, it will take the desired shape. On top, place a rectangle of cardboard that will become the base of the bed. It remains to put bedding here and you can relax.

But not only kids, adults will also comfortably fit on this product. But for people with a lot of weight, it is better to use not one rectangle, but many small ones, connecting these sections with adhesive tape. When disassembled, they will turn into a convenient shelf for books, newspapers and magazines.
If you like these creative beds, make another piece of upholstered furniture that resembles a brush.

Make a base for it. Such a blank is made of fabric in the form of a bag. The corners are wrapped on the wrong side and sewn up. Leave one edge free for now, insert a rectangle of thick foam rubber through this hole.

Now you have to create a lot of "villi". To do this, cut the bars of the correct shape from foam rubber. Each of them is sheathed with fabric according to the principle that has just been described.

Here is another soft bed. It is built from separate modules. On the side, large buttons on legs are sewn on, previously covered with the same fabric. To connect two modules, it is enough to put a rope tied into a ring on them.

Frameless transforming chair

It is unique and perfect for a couple. Here are two seats, interconnected by a dense fabric folded in half. It is fixed with buttons.

Such a product will quickly turn into a small double tent. It is enough to lift the fabric, fix it in this position again with the help of buttons.

Kids are sure to love the following frameless furniture as they love to build houses out of whatever they have on hand. Take the idea of the English designer Philippe Malouin into service, you can make such a product with your own hands.

For it you will need:
  • dense fabric;
  • corrugated cardboard;
  • Velcro;
  • stationery knife;
  • long line;
  • pen or pencil;
  • scissors;
  • thick foam.
The basis of this chair of a transformer consists of two pillows. How to make similar ones from thick foam rubber was described at the beginning of the article.
  1. Two soft blocks are sewn together on one side so that they can be folded over and put one on top of the other.
  2. On the upper block you need to sew a handle from the same fabric. When you want to turn the chair into a bed, just pull it towards you.
  3. The back and sides are made from several rectangles of corrugated cardboard. A piece of fabric 1 meter 50 wide, fold in half lengthwise. Sew along the large edge at the bottom, and also sew one small side on the side.
  4. Insert the first rectangle of cardboard there. Stitch this fabric or sew here by hand to separate this first section.
  5. Now nest a second rectangle, make a vertical stitch on a typewriter or on your hands in the same way. If you want a transformer chair to turn into a tent, then you need to make not one, but 2 rows of cardboard rectangles.
  6. When it comes time to create a roof for a small house, you will need to raise the second side row, connect at the top with Velcro. It is pre-sewn onto fabric blanks.
This is the frameless furniture you will have if you want to create it. To make this process even more clear, watch the video description from a specially selected story. It tells how a pear chair is sewn, but not ordinary, but in the form of a penguin.

How to make a children's frameless sofa chair from foam rubber, you will learn from the second review.

Do-it-yourself frameless furniture is a very fashionable offer from progressive handmakers. Such household items do not have parts made of hard parts. Since there is no main frame, there are a lot of advantages of unusual things over furniture with a rigid base. Among them:

  • safety due to the absence of any sharp corners;
  • originality, as the furniture freely changes shape;
  • her weight is insignificant, and even a child can carry her.

You can develop your own design according to your desire, sew convenient and comfortable items that are unique in style. You have the opportunity to choose the most optimal, only for your space, dimensions and take into account all your requirements, which are limited when buying finished furniture. This does not require special machines or tools used for the production of frame standard or built-in furniture. All necessary materials are freely sold and affordable. All you need is a desire, a certain amount of time and the ability to sew, which everyone received in labor lessons.

This, at first glance, unusual furniture, without a rigid wooden or metal frame, is found in children's playrooms located on
territory of supermarkets, and even in the working offices of progressive firms. Its main feature is that it follows the contours of the human body, and then is able to restore its original appearance. Its cost is many times lower, since there are no costs for the purchase and processing of wood or metal. Receiving relaxation and a state of bliss with such an attribute of an apartment will be available not only in salons, but also at home, where we strive after work to fully relax. The manufacturing process itself is simpler than sewing a soft toy.

For its manufacture you will need:

  • fabric from which the cover and internal parts will be sewn;
  • wax chalk to transfer patterns;
  • scissors to cut furniture pieces;
  • special reinforced threads and needles for sewing;
  • zippers for easy removal and washing of the cover;
  • sewing machine for strong stitches.

Next, you need to purchase all this. But first, create on paper sketches of your future bean bags, chairs in the form of toys, pear or even a flower, ottomans, balls, and maybe sofas or sun loungers. This will allow you to make an accurate calculation of the required footage of fabric elements.

One possible complication will be the preparation of patterns as separate parts of the pattern. The advice of the masters for beginners is to choose a drop-shaped chair, which consists of two rounded parts and six trapezoidal wedges, as a trial first product. At present, the flight of your imagination allows you to create at home with your own hands not only a separate frameless thing, but also all kinds of furniture sets. Patterns are available on any specialized site.

For the top covers, natural or artificial leather, various types of fabrics, furs are suitable. Take the selection of the part that will be worn on top very seriously. Be sure to take into account and check the material for strength, wear resistance, so that the fabric is durable and does not immediately tear at the seams. Not the last on the list will be its soiling and ability to absorb moisture, since it depends on how much additional detergent you buy. Pay attention to breathability so as not to make additional holes for air to enter. The color should match the interior of the room.

Since this is frameless furniture, its base consists of a filler. It is of two types:

  1. Safe granules, or balls of expanded polystyrene, polyurethane foam. This type is used for objects that take the form of a person.
  2. Prefabricated or molded polyurethane cushions for the production of modular furniture of the correct form.

To create a more rigid base, you can additionally put air mattresses or rubber chambers on the bottom of the product. Granules should be taken with medium sizes of about 4-6 mm, since smaller ones will weigh more, and larger ones will not give fluidity. Buy it with a margin so that at any time you can replace worn ones that shrink.

It is also necessary to purchase fabric for the inner cover, in which the filler will be placed directly. It should also be breathable, water-repellent and durable. When everything you need is acquired, the moment of direct production comes.

To do this, according to the prepared paper patterns, you need to cut out the fabric parts of the furniture. Do not forget about the obligatory additional two centimeters for the seams. Make the pattern on a flat and smooth surface so that the details are accurate. All parts are folded "fabric face" inside and are first sewn by hand and then by machine seam. You can fix it with a line on the front side, with a height from the edge of up to six centimeters for greater strength of the product. Fill the covers to about 75 percent to keep them soft and comfortable to sit on. Sew a zipper on the outer cover to make it easy to remove for washing.

Step-by-step instructions for fashionable handmakers (do-it-yourselfers) are available on YouTube channels. Believe that the joy of your child or "the child of your Soul" from such furniture will be great!
