Management and maintenance of Vaillant Turbotec / Atmotec boilers

Control and maintenance elements for gas boilers Vaillant Turbotec / Atmotec

The control panel of the Vailant turbo tech / atmo tech boilers consists of two temperature potentiometers, a DIA system display with a button panel (4 buttons) located at the bottom, a place for installing a regulator and a power supply.

A pressure gauge is available as an option. If the device does not have an analog pressure gauge, then the pressure indication on the digital display is standard. The setting of the respective setpoint temperatures is infinitely variable.

When setting the temperature, the corresponding setpoint is shown on the display of the DIA system. After approximately 5 seconds, this indication is deleted and the display returns to the standard operation display of the machine.

What is new is that on instruments with an analog pressure gauge both the temperature and pressure readings appear as standard readings on the display.

Switching from indication of pressure to temperature occurs by pressing the "-""-" key. Short press - the reading is reset, long press - the -°C symbol starts flashing. When the blinking stops, the readings switch to a permanent display.

Summer mode setting

Summer mode B i.e. only water heating, activated by turning off the heating, and the heating temperature regulator is set to the extreme left position, the same position is the setting for the boiler antifreeze protection.

Setting the maximum flow temperature

The maximum desired flow temperature (the rightmost position of the controller) is set via the DIA system in diagnostic point d.71.

Setting range from 40 to 85 °C. Factory setting 75°C.

Activation of the Aqua Comfort system of Vaillant Turbotec / Atmotec plus boilers

The "hot start" function is activated by turning the DHW temperature value knob to the maximum position, deactivated by turning it to the minimum position.

"Hot start" B is the start of the boiler from the hot position. When "hot start" is activated, the symbol C appears on the display.

Display boilers Vailant turbo tech / atmosphere tech

The DIA system display shows three-digit codes: temperature, status, diagnostics or faults. The DIA system has three service buttons and one "Reset" button. Pressing "Reset" resets the device from the lock state to the operating position or restarts during operation.

Functional diagram of the boiler Vaillant Atmotec plus / pro

Boilers Vaillant Atmotec series are devices operating on the flow principle for heating and hot water heating.

These combustion appliances use the air of the room in which they are installed, so ventilation must always be provided for the proper functioning of the appliance.

Exhaust gases under natural draft are discharged through the chimney to the outside. The new flue gas sensors detect, in addition to the exit of combustion products into the room, also the return flow of gases!

Fig.4. Functional diagram of the boiler Vaillant Atmotec plus

Draft stabilizer and flue gas sensors

Air flow control is a safety block that separates combustion processes from the influence of external factors. Boilers with an atmospheric combustion chamber in apartments can only be installed in cases where it is known for sure that carbon monoxide cannot accumulate in dangerous concentrations.

Therefore, Vaillant Atmotec boilers, like all boilers with an open combustion chamber, are equipped with flue gas sensors, which, when flue gases appear, turn off the device after about 2 minutes.

Flue gas sensor, AtmoGuard system

The Vaillant Atmotec plus gas wall-mounted boiler is equipped with an AtmoGuard sensor. Unlike earlier solutions, AtmoGuard distinguishes not only the accumulation of gases, but also their reverse flow. Improved sensitivity is achieved by a new location of the sensor on the flue gas side.

Now it is located on the side at the upper outlet of the draft stabilizer, and the second one is located inside and controls the gas flow. When flue gases exit into the room, hot flue gases flow past this temperature sensor and an increase in its temperature is detected, which leads to automatic shutdown of the burner.

The appliance restarts automatically approx. 15 V 20 minutes after switching off. If the switch-off is repeated twice during the interrupted heat demand, the appliance is permanently blocked.

Fault message "F.36" appears on the display. Unlocking and restarting follow after pressing the reset button.

If the device was turned off three times in series, then it is forbidden to turn it on without subsequent control of the gas path.

Functional test of flue gas sensors

Block off the flue gas path with a Vaillant fan.

Start the device.

The device should turn off automatically within 2 minutes.

The appliance restarts automatically approx. 15 V 20 minutes after switching off. The burner has been blocked all this time. By pressing the reset button, the device can be restarted again.

Functional diagram of the boiler Vailant turbo tech

Vaillant gas boilers of the Turbotec series are independent of the air in the room and are used for heating and hot water preparation according to the flow principle.

These combustion appliances suck in fresh air through chimney systems, exhaust gases are expelled outside by a built-in fan.

All appliances are only certified with original Vaillant flue gas and combustion air systems.

Fig.5. Functional diagram of Vaillant Turbotec boilers

Exhaust manifold - functional diagram

The accumulator captures the flue gases that appear in the combustion chamber during the combustion of fuel and removes from the device by a fan through the chimney.

Fig.6. Exhaust manifold - functional diagram: Fan, exhaust manifold

Fan/ Air pressure sensor/ Pitot tube

An air pressure sensor (presostat) and a Pitot tube control the flow of gas-air masses. The pitot tube is located at the outlet of the fan, along the flue gas path. The Pitot tube, depending on the flowing air flow, forms a pressure difference. Differential pressure appears between the outlet of the pitot tube (vacuum) and the low pressure chamber.

Differential pressure only occurs when the combustion air intake flow is dense enough to close the microswitch

Air pressure sensor. This information goes further to the electronics. The switch-on pressure of the pressure switch is in the range from 80 Pa to 68 Pa.

During maintenance, the pitot tube must be checked for contamination that could significantly impair its function (e.g. insects)

Exhaust diaphragms

During operation of the device, the fan must create pressure to overcome the resistance that occurs when gases move along the entire path (combustion chamber, air inlet, outlet of combustion products). The maximum possible length of the flue gas and air extraction systems is determined by the fan power and the cross-section of the chimney systems.

Adjusting the volume of air to different lengths and sections of pipes is carried out using flue gas diaphragms.

The pressure transfer solution is new, because in previous models, there was a danger of water entering the pressure switch through the connecting hoses. In the new generation of boilers, a more reliable system (differential pressure: Venturi - UDK) should reduce the occurrence of faults, resulting in a weaker pressure signal than before.

To increase the low pressure signal, Vaillant Turbotec boilers are supplied with new pre-assembled flue gas diaphragms. These diaphragms are made of a special artificial material reinforced with fiberglass. They amplify the Pitot tube pressure signal.

As a result, there is no need for one of the two tubes to the pressure switch. The built-in airflow from the hose further reduced the sensitivity to condensate.

Electrical installation of boilers Vailant turbo tech / atmo tech

The rated voltage in the network should be 220 V; at voltages above 253 V and below 190 V, functional disturbances may occur. The Vaillant Turbotec / Atmotec boiler is equipped with a cable with a plug with a protective angled contact.

The cable is connected to the instrument at the factory. The socket must be accessible to the user so that the plug can be disconnected at any time. The socket must not be located in protection zone I or II.

Operating principle of PTC flue gas sensors

Since the boilers operate between full load (100%) and ignition (40%), flue gas temperatures can vary.

Therefore, two sensors are installed in Vaillant Atmotec boilers. One of them is located directly in the flue gas flow to measure the actual temperature of the combustion products, and the second sensor is located at the outside of the draft stabilizer, from where flue gases can enter the room. If the difference between the temperatures measured by the indoor and outdoor sensors is large enough, the machine is operating normally.

If the combustion products escape into the room, then the temperature difference becomes smaller, and the device electronics recognize this phenomenon as the release of combustion products into the room. If combustion products enter the room within 115 seconds, the device turns off for 20 minutes. After the third 20 V minute shutdown, the electronics checks the flue gas conditions again.

If this time also the exit of combustion products into the room is noted, the device is turned off and blocked.

The status message "S.52" appears within the 20B minute delay when the status is polled. After the third attempt with fumes escaping, fault message "F.36" appears on the display.

NTC temperature sensors

The NTC resistance values of the supply, return and secondary heat exchanger (SWT) have changed compared to the previous generation of devices.

The resistance values correspond to those on the VR 11 (solar) or VED.E.

Sensor functions:

Heating supply water temperature control

Hot water temperature control

Empty protection

overheat protection

Hot start function

Frost protection

All NTC sensors have the same characteristics. Sensors are powered by 5 V

Burner lockout time

The burner blocking time limits the number of starts when the Vailant turbo tech / atmospheric boiler is in heating mode. This function is started after the heating demand disappears.

The blocking time is calculated from the flow temperature and the set maximum burner blocking time.

Burner blocking does not affect the operation of the appliance in DHW mode.

A new start of the device is possible by turning on the mains switch or by turning the flow temperature potentiometer to the extreme left position and back to the original one.

The maximum blocking time of the burner is set in diagnostic point d.2 between 8 and 60 min. (factory setting 15 minutes)

After turning off the heating, the remaining blocking time can be set in diagnostic point d.67.

Other functions of Vaillant Turbotec / Atmotec boilers

Hot start function (only for Plus devices)

The internal temperature of the heating water in the hot start machine can be changed according to local conditions or the user's wishes.

At the diagnostic level in menu item “d.73”, the factory-preset deviation of the hot start temperature from the calculated hot start temperature, equal to B15 K, can be changed in the range from B15 to +5 K.

Frost protection function

If the heating system flow temperature drops below 8 °C, within 30 minutes: The priority diverter valve is moved to an intermediate position between heating and domestic hot water (only Vaillant Turbotec / Atmotec VUW or VU boilers with integrated diverter valve) and the pump is switched on heating circuit.

This enables the flow sensor to measure the actual temperature of the heating system, as the water in the system is stirred.

If the flow temperature rises above 10 °C, the pump switches off again for 30 minutes.

After 30 min. or when the flow temperature drops below 5 °C, the burner starts. The heating mode is switched off when the flow temperature exceeds 35 °C.

The frost protection mode is terminated, regardless of the measures mentioned above, if: hot water is required or the heating mode is switched on.

Hot water mode

Domestic hot water mode has priority over heating mode.

When a hot water tap is opened at a hot water supply point, the water flow sensor (Aquasensor) recognizes the movement of water in the pipeline.

The flow of water begins to rotate the impeller. After a certain speed has been reached, the electronic unit sets the priority diverter valve to "DHW mode" (only if it was previously switched to "Heating mode"). The pump turns on.

Vaillant Atmotec gas boiler: After the pumping is completed, the GFA turns on the ignition transformer and allows the start-up gas flow to be supplied.

Vaillant Turbotec gas boiler: After the end of pumping, the fan starts. If the flue gas line is OK, then the pressure switch is switched on.

The further course is identical to the heating mode. However, the full thermal power of the apparatus develops immediately after the detection of a flame. A two-minute power limit, unlike heating mode, is not entered.

The heating water is supplied countercurrent to the heated hot water supply to the secondary heat exchanger. This ensures efficient transfer of heat from the hot water in the primary circuit to the heated water. The outlet water temperature is controlled according to the set value.

All boilers Vaillant Turbotec / Atmotec Plus

The outlet water temperature is maintained approximately constant over the operating range of the apparatus at any flow rate. For this, information on the flow rate of heated water is used, transmitted to the electronics unit by the Aquasensor in the form of pulses with a frequency varying from the flow rate, as well as information from an additional NTC sensor installed on the hot water supply.

If the hot water tap is closed, then at a flow rate of less than 1.1 l, the AquaVsensor recognizes the absence of water flow, and the electronics switches off the device. The pump continues to run for 10 seconds.

Heating mode

After a request for heat by the room thermostat, the automatic heating controller or the electronics, the priority diverter valve is set to "Heat mode". However, this only happens if the priority diverter valve has previously been set to "DHW mode" (only for VUW or VU+VIH units).

The pump starts at the same time. Subsequent pumping for 20 seconds serves to redistribute the residual heat in the appliance and should prevent the blocking of the heating mode by a short-term injection of hot water from other units or the heating system.

Vaillant Atmotec wall-mounted boiler: After the end of pumping, the GFA turns on the ignition transformer and allows the start gas flow to be supplied.

Vaillant Turbotec wall-mounted boiler: After the end of pumping, the fan starts. If the flue gas line is OK, then the pressure switch is switched on.

The pressure switch switching signal allows the GFA to turn on the ignition transformer and apply the start gas flow.

Gas is supplied to ignite the burner and the burner ignites. As soon as the control electrode detects a flame, the ignition transformer is switched off.

If the flame is not detected within 8 s of the control time, then, after a 15 s delay, a second and possibly a third attempt to ignite the burner is made.

Within 2 minutes, the electronics limits the power of the device to 40%. In this way, the life of the burner is increased and the condition of frequent re-ignition of the burner (clocking) is eliminated. After that, depending on the deviations of the actual temperature from the set one, the modulation value is set. The maximum value is limited by the set partial output of the heating system. The heating water is heated in the primary heat exchanger.

Temperature sensors at the inlet and outlet of the primary heat exchanger monitor the water flow. To do this, the difference and temperature gradients of both sensors are analyzed.

The gas flow rate, corresponding to the heat demand, is regulated within the range from the starting flow rate to the partial power consumption for heating. The regulation process is implemented by an electrically controlled modulation magnet.

Vaillant Atmotec wall-mounted gas boiler: After the end of the heat request, the gas fittings of the burner are de-energized. As a result, the gas supply stops and the burner goes out.

Vaillant Turbotec gas wall-mounted boiler: After the end of the heat request, the gas fittings and the fan are de-energized. The burner goes out when the gas supply is cut off. Since the fan stops supplying air, the air pressure sensor returns to its resting state. The re-ignition delay and the pump overrun start.

Multifunctional module

If it is necessary to connect external components, an additional module can be used. This module is designed for electrical connection to the eBus junction box. The module is located only in the instrument junction box.

For units with atmospheric burners extracting air directly from the room in which the unit is installed (Vaillant Atmotec or Turbotec open duct) when installing an exhaust hood in the same room, we recommend using the accessory box to lock the exhaust hood during burner operation.

For LPG operation below ground level. If the LPG boiler is operated below ground level, we recommend using a customer-supplied solenoid valve. You will need an accessory box to connect. The opening of the external solenoid valve occurs simultaneously with the start of the internal gas valve.

Connecting an external fault indicator. Using the accessory box, you can easily connect an operating status or fault indicator and thus remotely monitor the operation of the machine.

Connection of a circulation pump for hot water. A DHW circulation pump can also be connected via the accessory box.

Connection of an additional external pump for the heating system. Optionally, a customer-installed external circulation pump for the heating system can be connected via the accessory box.

The external pump only starts when:

When the internal pump starts (prerequisite)

When the three-way priority valve is in the "heating" position

When the delay time of 20 seconds has elapsed after the priority valve has been switched to the "heating" position.

External pump does not start:

If the priority valve is in the "hot water" position

Internal pump not running

Accumulator load pump. The hopper loading pump output is always activated when the external hopper is being loaded by the instrument's internal control. Not applicable to Vaillant Turbotec / Atmotec VUW boilers.

Exhaust/exhaust valve. The voltage is supplied to the hood when the burner is off or 90 seconds after the device is turned off. When the boiler is running, the hood is blocked by the module. The flue gas valve is activated when there is a request for heating the heating system, when hot water is supplied (open sanitary water valve), when the storage tank is loaded. The voltage supply is switched off 90 seconds after the end of heat consumption.
