In the 1970s, American scientists were tasked with developing a special material for spacecraft that could withstand both extremely high and very low temperatures. The created composite material, consisting of a polymer matrix and a special filler, was called energy-saving paint. The topical issue of energy saving in the literal sense today made energy-saving paints fall from the sky to the ground. Today, this modern material is effectively used for "domestic" purposes as a thermal insulation coating for building envelopes and pipelines.

Operating principle

The hollow microspheres that make up the filler look like powder. The smallest particles have a diameter of 10 to 200 microns and a wall thickness of 0.5-2 microns. The general properties of the product depend on their size, quantity and the material from which they are made.

The secret of the energy-saving properties of the coating is as follows. After drying, the composition turns into a dense and elastic membrane. The microspheres in the membrane are able to reflect and scatter about 90% of infrared radiation and more than 80% of visible sunlight. Energy-saving paint is a kind of "climate control" that does not let heat into the house in summer, and keeps heat inside in winter and is a barrier to the street cold. In numerical terms, the reduction of heat loss from building envelopes when using energy-saving coatings can reach 40-45%.

Energy-saving coating reduces heat loss, protects structures from corrosion and overheating, prevents the formation of condensate, reduces operating costs and less frequently repairs. On average, energy-saving paints from various manufacturers withstand temperature ranges from -60°C to +200°C. Although the upper limit for some modern modifications can reach +500°C.

Due to the peculiarities of the composition, energy-saving adhesives have good adhesion to almost any surface, whether it is a concrete or brick wall, a metal pipe, a wooden or plasterboard partition. In this case, the surface can be absolutely any shape - the paint will lie flat.

How to work with energy saving paints

The base for the coating must be dry and clean, the preparation is carried out in accordance with GOST 28196-89 (clause 6.3.) As when working with water-dispersion paints. For better adhesion on the surface, it is recommended to apply a primer that does not contain organic solvents.

To apply paint to the surface, use a brush, roller or spray gun. One layer is applied first. The time required for drying is 24 hours, then polymerization occurs within 12 hours (the same membrane is formed). After that, you need to apply a second layer. Paint consumption depends on the base material and can range from 0.155 to 0.5 liters. per sq.m. (one layer). The thickness of the coating is approximately 0.25-0.5 mm, due to which the paint does not weigh down the structures and does not occupy a usable area, in contrast to the use of multilayer insulation.

Energy-saving paints must be mixed well in a bucket or some other container before application. You can use an electric drill with a special nozzle for this. It is not necessary to dilute the paint with water - it is sold ready-made.

If the structures are in an open area, it is not recommended to work when it is raining, it is also necessary to provide protection from possible precipitation for the first four hours after application. The temperature during work should not be below 5 °C.

Caring for painted surfaces is very simple - they can be washed with any detergent. If it becomes necessary to replace the coating, this can be done using a grinding tool. But it should be noted that the paint has a rather long service life. Manufacturers usually give a guarantee of at least 10 years. But, as experience shows, on the outer surfaces of house structures, it should work confidently up to 50 years in normal Russian climatic conditions and up to 15 years if it is subjected to harsh environmental influences.

New trends and developments

Today, paints from various manufacturers can contain microspheres made of glass, ceramics, and be produced in the form of aerogels with the smallest particles developed using the latest nanotechnologies, in the form of insulating putties.

Recently, a fundamental novelty has appeared on the market - a ceramic additive that can be mixed with ordinary paint, turning it into an energy-saving one. An environmentally friendly and non-toxic dry powder, consisting of ceramic granules, is added to the paint at the rate of 110 g of additive per 1 kg of paint. The additive can also be used with other coatings and composite materials for interior and exterior decoration.

Energy-saving effect paint is not destroyed by high temperature. It is able to withstand maximum temperatures up to 250-260 degrees Celsius. This means that it can be successfully applied both on the facades of buildings and on various communications located in the open air.

A simple example: if you paint pipes that run outdoors and provide hot water to the population, then the temperature in the pipe can increase by as much as 6-7 degrees!

By the way, domestic builders are already successfully using energy-saving paint in action. As an experiment, a microdistrict in Kazan was allocated.
