Gothic 3 gives an error when starting

I wrote the guide based on my 6-year experience of installing Gothic 3 on a variety of configs and dealing with lags. Maybe for someone quite obvious things will be written here, but for the majority it will still be useful. Let's start with the most important thing. Namely, from the client.

Game client.

We all know that Gothic 3 came out raw, to say the least. There were animation gaps (everyone remembers boars?), and memory leaks and unpleasant friezes. There was everything. For this we will "thank" the now deceased JoWood. But gradually the situation began to improve. Both the developers themselves and enthusiastic enthusiastic fans tried their best. There are many different versions of the game, but only three versions of the client deserve attention:

- Official, version 1.12.

This is the fourth and last patch from the developers. The game is no longer officially supported. In principle, the client is now quite playable. Memory leaks, friezes, problems with loading textures are still there, but they are no longer so terrible. Personally went with this patch the whole game to the end. Those. went around all the cities, completed most of the quests, plus the plot and went with Xardas to unknown lands. So you can safely put it and play.

Save incompatibility.

Keep in mind that saves from different versions of the client are incompatible with each other. That is, if you have saves, say from version 1.12, then you will not be able to play with them in version 1.74. This is bad and nothing can be done about it.

Buy iron!

On many forums, you can see such "advice". It is given by people who have little understanding of computers, and even the very specifics of Gothic 3. The thing here is that Gothic 3 can run quite tolerably on relatively ancient hardware, or it can lag terribly on top-end hardware. An extremely unstable game engine on a single config can behave as you like. I will give a simple example. On a desktop 5 years ago (Core 2 Duo 1.86 GHz, 1 Gb RAM, 256 Mb Video) the game works quite well. On medium settings, it is played quite comfortably, with small friezes, when loading textures, in transitions between locations. On a year-old config, at high settings, everything is the same, but the truth is already with minimal friezes. Lucky with iron, you say. I agree, lucky. But, every now and then I hear indignant cries on different forums. Like so, I have a top-end computer, but it lags! And really, if you think about it, the game came out 6 years ago, and what can lag there? As you know, at one time JoWood did not allow Piranha Bytes to finish the game within the predetermined timeframe, releasing an extremely raw client under the guise of a game. As a result, JoWood itself is ruined, and we play what the brightest heads of the fan community are still working on.

Correct installation.

I will be banal, but it all starts with the correct installation. If you have a Steam version, then Steam will install everything it needs. If on the disk, then after installing the game we put everything that is in the folder with the drivers. The same applies to torrent versions. Also turn on Windows Update if you have it turned off and update the axis. It was put. Launched, but the game lags? We will deal with each specific case.

Lags and fighting them.

After all the patches, all bugs usually come down to brakes. These are the ones we are going to fight. Let's start with the most important.

Localization.

If you have a localized Russian version, then go to the root folder with the game and delete Gothic 3.ttf (font file) from there. Do not be afraid, the fonts themselves will not go anywhere, but playing will become noticeably more comfortable.

Strong brakes.

Usually occur on laptops or older machines. There are a lot of ways to fight, but usually the simplest one helps more noticeably - to remove all the shadows. Go to Detail -> Adjust, reduce the quality of the shadows to nothing. Freezes will be an order of magnitude smaller and it will be much more pleasant to play. Personally tested on several old machines 5-6 years ago.

Fine tuning.

Here you can go two ways. The easiest is to set everything up right in the game menu (Details -> Customize). Or you can try to edit the ge3.ini file located in the Ini subfolder (eg "D:\Games\Gothic III\Ini"). In this case, a more complete toolkit is available to you for more precise tuning.

Attention! There may be problems with the localized version! Therefore make a backup copy of ge3.ini before starting the setup.

Information on configuring the ini file

The permission can be changed manually:

(this way you can set for example 1280x1024)

Grass quality:

Render.EnableVegetationRendering=true

Grass Visibility Range:

VegetationAdmin.ViewRange=3500.0

(the figure indicates the drawing distance - the larger it is, the more performance drops. However, this parameter does not affect the drawing of trees)

Vegetation quality (other parameter):

VegetationAdmin.Quality=high

Can be installed in:

Memory usage optimization:

Cache.SizeImage=128000000

Cache.SizeMaterial=40000000

Cache.SizeMesh=70000000

Cache.SizeSound=80000000

Cache.SizeCollisionMesh=40000000

Cache.SizeAnimation=40000000

Image quality:

Shader version: Shader.CurrentShaderVersion=2_0

This is where the shader version is set. The "_" sign replaces the dot

Tree shadows:

Shader.EnableTreeShadows=true

Shader.EnableStaticShadows=true

By operating with these parameters, you can also improve performance on weak systems.

Detailed shadows:

Shader.EnableDetailShadows=true

Overall quality (animation, models):

Render.MeshLoDQuality=UltraHigh

Render.AnimationLoDQuality=UltraHigh

Render.ImageLoDQuality=UltraHigh

Can also be displayed in:

AnimationBlending.PhysicControllerDistance=1200

The parameter affects the physics of LoD (not sure what you mean). By adjusting the parameter, you can unload the percent.

What is Gothic 3 Enhanced Edition?

How to make Gothic 3 work fine.

How to make Gothic 3 work fine.

And finally, it is worth mentioning the extended edition of Gothic 3. The extended edition is essentially the same pure third Gothic, but already containing Community Patch 1.74 (or new 1.75). And that's it, nothing else should be there! I put so many exclamation marks because I saw on torrents a monstrous build quality with the same name. But they have nothing to do with the extended edition. Guys, please remember one simple thing. Putting any fashion on the third Gothic is completely undesirable. There is no need to introduce even more instability into an already very unstable program code. You should not experiment with all these Hi-rez packs, self-written modstarters and other modmaker crafts. All these experiments will bring you nothing but anger and regular brakes. It is on this cautionary note that I may end. Hope this post is helpful to someone.

Good luck to everyone in the game!

No, I already know that.

If Gothic 3 crashes, Gothic 3 will not start, Gothic 3 not installing, there are no controls in Gothic 3, no sound in game, errors happen in Gothic 3 – we offer you the most common ways to solve data problems.

First, check if your PC meets the minimum system requirements:

  • Windows®XP sp1, Windows®2000 SP4, Windows®XP 64-bit, Windows®2003 Server
  • Intel Pentium IV 2 GHz or Athlon XP 2000+
  • 1024MB RAM
  • 4.6 GB free HDD space
  • GeForce 3 or Radeon 8500
  • DirectX 9.0c (Version April 2006)
  • DirectX compatible sound card
  • 8x DVD-ROM
  • Keyboard, mouse.

Be sure to update your video card drivers and other software

Before you remember the worst words and express them towards the developers, do not forget to go to the official website of the manufacturer of your video card and download the latest drivers. Often, specially optimized drivers are prepared for the release of games. You can also try installing a later version of the drivers if the problem is not solved by installing the current version.

It is important to remember that you should only download the final versions of video cards - try not to use beta versions, as they may have a large number of bugs not found and not fixed.

Do not forget that games often require the latest version of DirectX to be installed, which can always be downloaded from the official Microsoft website.

Gothic 3 won't start

Many problems with launching games happen due to incorrect installation. Check if there were any errors during the installation, try to uninstall the game and run the installer again, after disabling the antivirus - often the files necessary for the game to work are deleted by mistake. It is also important to remember that the path to the folder with the installed game should not contain Cyrillic characters - use only Latin letters and numbers for directory names.

It still does not hurt to check if there is enough space on the HDD for installation. You can try to run the game as Administrator in compatibility mode with different versions of Windows.

Gothic 3 slows down. Low FPS. Logs. Friezes. hangs up

First - install the latest drivers for the video card, from this FPS in the game can rise significantly. Also check the computer's load in the task manager (opened by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + ESCAPE). If, before starting the game, you see that some process is consuming too many resources, turn off its program or simply end this process from the task manager.

Next, go to the graphics settings in the game. First of all, turn off anti-aliasing and try lowering the settings responsible for post-processing. Many of them consume a lot of resources and disabling them will significantly increase performance without greatly affecting the quality of the picture.

Gothic 3 crashes to desktop

If Gothic 3 often crashes to your desktop, try lowering the graphics quality to start solving the problem. It is possible that your computer simply does not have enough performance and the game cannot work correctly. It is also worth checking for updates - most modern games have a system for automatically installing new patches. Check if this option is disabled in the settings.

Black screen in Gothic 3

More often than not, the problem with the black screen is an issue with the GPU. Check if your graphics card meets the minimum requirements and install the latest drivers. Sometimes a black screen is the result of insufficient CPU performance.

If everything is fine with the hardware, and it meets the minimum requirements, try switching to another window (ALT + TAB), and then return to the game window.

Gothic 3 is not installed. Installation stuck

First of all, check if you have enough HDD space for installation. Remember that the setup program requires the advertised amount of space plus 1-2 gigabytes of free space on the system drive to run properly. In general, remember the rule - the system drive should always have at least 2 gigabytes of free space for temporary files. Otherwise, both games and programs may not work correctly or refuse to start at all.

Installation problems can also occur due to lack of Internet connection or its unstable operation. Also, do not forget to suspend the antivirus while installing the game - sometimes it interferes with the correct copying of files or deletes them by mistake, considering them viruses.

Saves not working in Gothic 3

By analogy with the previous solution, check the availability of free space on the HDD - both on the one where the game is installed and on the system drive. Often save files are stored in a folder of documents, which is located separately from the game itself.

Controls not working in Gothic 3

Sometimes the controls in the game do not work due to the simultaneous connection of several input devices. Try disabling the gamepad, or if for some reason you have two keyboards or mice connected, leave only one pair of devices. If the gamepad does not work for you, then remember that only controllers that are defined as Xbox joysticks officially support games. If your controller is defined differently, try using programs that emulate Xbox joysticks (for example, x360ce).

Sound not working in Gothic 3

Check if the sound works in other programs. After that, check if the sound is turned off in the settings of the game itself and if the sound playback device is selected there, to which your speakers or headset are connected. Next, while the game is running, open the mixer and check if the sound is muted there.

If you are using an external sound card, check for new drivers on the manufacturer's website.

A companion fired while waiting will not slide across the terrain.

Skills and Spells

The Turn Evil spell is no longer wasted on inappropriate enemies.

For modders: The display of HP, SP and MP attributes given by shrines now uses the TeachAttribValue from the corresponding info file.

interactive objects

The attacked hero cannot sleep, sit down, open chests, sharpen weapons, or use other interactive objects.

If the hero cannot use the interactive object, he will receive a message about the required item.

If the hero sits on a chair or bench, he will slowly restore vitality.

For modders: Lock_PS of chests has a new KeyAmount attribute. If the hero needs several identical keys to open the chest, you can specify their number in it.

For modders: It is now possible to set a GameEvent when a hero opens a chest (Interaction.ScriptUseFunc). This event will be set every time the hero uses the object. The same applies to the use of anvils, grindstones, cauldrons, fires, alchemy tables, veins, tree trunks (saws), orc drums, water barrels, thrones, stools, benches, hookahs, and lecterns.

For modders: The attribute boost when reading a blacksmith's lectern is now also linked to the "Alternative Balance" toggle.

To prevent the player's hair from obscuring the view, the first-person camera has been moved up.

Control

Changed the default hotkey for the "Take All" action from "Z" to "U" during a Heist.

If the hero was interrupted by a conversation with an NPC, then he does not automatically enter sneak mode again.

Resolved an issue where a hero would perform an action after a player clicked the "Ok" button while in tutorial mode.

During a call, it is no longer possible to switch back to the main menu.

Unconscious NPCs and open chests can now be looted by right-clicking them.

Only with Alternate AI enabled:

Increased the frequency of attacks during arena fights.

On a high difficulty level, fighters in the arena move a little faster.

Fixed a bug where groups of animals could use quick attacks on the low difficulty level.

If you have a Steam version, then Steam itself will install everything that it needs.

If you have a localized Russian version, then go to the root folder with the game and delete Gothic3.ttf (file with fonts) from there. Do not be afraid, the fonts themselves will not go anywhere, but playing will become noticeably more comfortable.

Strong brakes.

Usually occur on laptops or older machines. There are a lot of ways to fight, but usually the simplest one helps more noticeably - to remove all the shadows. We go to Detailing -Adjust, the quality of the shadows is reduced to nothing. Freezes will be an order of magnitude smaller and it will be much more pleasant to play. Personally tested on several old machines 5-6 years ago.

Fine tuning.

Here you can go two ways. The easiest is to set everything up right in the game menu (Details - Customize).

WhatsuchGothic 3Enhanced Edition?

And finally, it is worth mentioning the extended edition of Gothic 3. The extended edition is essentially the same pure third Gothic, but already containing the Community Patch 1.74 (or the new 1.75).

Introduction

This guide is a collection of all sorts of solutions, collected from the Internet and arranged into a simple sequence of actions. As a result of which the Steam version of Gothic will be launched on modern computers.

If you are too lazy to figure it out, then there is an even simpler and more complex solution - (official site:). By installing the crack from this guide and SystemPack, you will greatly simplify the process. One thing though, it may not work for everyone. Therefore, this guide is still relevant.

In this topic, I want to tell you how to bring the cult role-playing game back to life. Due to its serious age, "Gothic" is not very willing to work on modern computers. This guide is written for those who decide to indulge in nostalgia. I bought the game on Steam and ran into a number of problems. Below we will consider all existing methods for solving Gothic problems, and also install the famous localization from 1C / Snowball.

And let's start with Russification. Despite the fact that I strongly recommend Russian voice acting, this guide provides for the ability to play with the original voice acting and Russian subtitles. The original is German, and I do not advise anyone to even try English localization, it's just awful :) Also, keep in mind that subtitles are not provided in the videos.

Russification

Official localization from 1C/Snowball. It is possible to set full localization or translation of only text and subtitles.

Download from Yandex.Disk

(text, sound and video in separate archives):

yadi .sk/d/bLA7CXF7CY3vg yadi .sk/d/ZNQidVvdCY3ym yadi .sk/d/Zjho7zBPCY3xz

Installation:
  • for full localization, unpack all three archives into the folder with the game installed (for example: D:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\common\Gothic), confirm the replacement of files;
  • to russify only the text, it is enough to download and unpack only one archive (keep in mind that the game does not provide for the presence of subtitles in videos).

This set was collected by me from the vast expanses of the Internet and optimized for the Steam version of the game. After simple tricks (which will take you 15 minutes maximum), "Gothic" will fly on any personal collider running Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 in widescreen HD resolution.

Download everything in one archive from Yandex.Disk

yadi.sk/d/PY8xeo4ar7h3y

    * copy to the address bar of the browser, remove the space before the dot
Procedure:
  • launch file gothic.exe you need to set compatibility with Windows XP / Vista and run as administrator ();
  • run all applications as administrator;
  • Russification first, then patches.

1. Gothic Mod Player Kit (GMPK) - a program for launching and configuring modifications - install it in the game folder;
2. Gothic Mod Fix - a large set of fixes for bugs and glitches in the game - for Russian and original voice acting - install the mod and hotfix to it in the game folder;
3. Gothic FPS - a patch that removes the FPS limit, works only with installed GMPK - specify the path to the GothicMod.exe file, which is located in the System folder;
4. Gothic Orc Tempel patch - fixing a bug after installing Gothic FPS with switches in the temple of the Sleeper - install it in the game folder;
5. Gothic Soundpatch - a patch that restores cut sounds, also treats localization bugs in the Russian version - install in the game folder;
6. Shahta Fix - fixing the problem with loading additional locations (Old Mine) - copy to the folder with the game;
7. New version of the SHW32.DLL library - fixes the error "SmartHeap Library. MEM_BAD_POINTER" - copy to the System folder;
8. Font High Resolution - three types of enlarged Cyrillic fonts for playing at high resolutions - copy to the Data folder;
9. Menu AutoScale - enlarged game menus for high resolutions - copy to the Data folder;
10. Fullscreen Fixes - the patch removes black/white bars/corners along the edges of the screen, optimizes FPS and enables forced full screen mode when playing on Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 - installation via install.bat or using the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit - detailed instructions in readme.txt;
11. Vista SP1 BGM Patch - a patch that fixes the playback of background music on Windows Vista - copy to the game folder.
12. The final stage - editing the file Gothic.ini, which is located in the System folder.
Open it with regular notepad and look for the lines:

if the value is one (=1), most likely the videos in the game will not be played

zVidResFullscreenX=1920 zVidResFullscreenY=1080 zVidResFullscreenBPP=32

here we immediately set the screen resolution we need and change the color depth to 32

* Most likely, 1920x1080 and 1920x1200 resolutions will be reset each time the game is launched. Solution: each time manually set the resolution in the INI file or set any other resolution in the game settings (for example, 1600x900).

For reference:

  • Items 10 and 11 are required only for users of Windows Vista and Windows 8/8.1/10, respectively;
  • items 8 and 9 are optional, it is recommended to use them at screen resolutions of 1366x768 and higher;
  • if you can't play videos, run the game as an administrator;

Among other things

If all else fails and the game keeps crashing on loading:

  • most likely this is due to the Steam overlay (the thing that is called by default with the Shift + Tab combination) - currently the overlay cannot be simply turned off;
    solution: from the Steam folder (namely Steam, not games) delete / move the file GameOverlayRenderer.dll and/or GameOverlayRenderer64.dll;
    without this file, the overlay cannot physically start and interfere with the game;
    after that, without any harm, you can return everything to its place, or Steam itself will restore the files upon restart;
  • depending on what OS you have, try different compatibility settings for the file gothic.exe;
  • you can run the game not from Steam, but from a folder ( );
  • you can always download the working repack from Fedor and install it directly on top of the Steam version (tobish right here -> Steam\SteamApps\common\Gothic) - may I help.

Technical questions

We solve all problems of game interaction with your system/machine here. Please read the information below before asking anything. If you did not find the answer there, then when asking a question, indicate the edition and version of the game. Also be sure to provide a detailed description of the problem, computer configuration, OS versions and drivers for audio and video, the contents of the log obtained when you exit the game (for G3 and G3 FG - Lastlog_GE3.log), as well as all other information that may be useful in solving your difficulties. Please note that there are no cool hackers or telepaths here who can independently find out what kind of hardware and software you have.

Features of the game "Gothic 3" in different versions of Windows:

Spoiler

Windows 2000-XP
Best suited for the game, no particular compatibility issues are observed.

Windows Vista, 7 and 8.x (all versions)
Problems with turning on the console.
On laptops by pressing a key ~ (tilde) console won't turn on. The cause of the problem is the presence of a driver in the system Microsoft EHome Infrared device. Therefore, in Gothic 3 Enhanced Edition, an alternative key combination is available to call it: Left Shift + Right Shift + Home(Home must not be on the numeric keypad, as this key is used to drink a healing drink).

Problems with changing the resolution and refresh rate of the screen.
You cannot change the resolution and refresh rate of the screen in the game, so you need to exit the game and manually set them in the file
\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\Gothic3\UserOptions.ini(options Resolution.Width, Resolution.Height and Resolution.RefreshRate).

Windows XP x86, Vista x86, 7 x86 and 8.xx86
On 32-bit versions of Windows, the enhanced editions of Gothic 3 and the Forsaken Gods add-on may not have enough 2 GB of virtual memory that the OS allocates to the application by default, which leads to a crash to the desktop. But you can force the OS for applications with the LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE flag (i.e., improved editions of these games) to increase the amount of virtual memory allocated to 3 GB.
Windows XP:
Edit hidden file boot.ini and in section add a couple of additional keys to the end of the bootable OS selection line (usually after the /fastdetect key): /3GB /UserVA=n(I recommend setting n=2900).
Windows Vista, 7 and 8.x:
Run command prompt as administrator and run the following command:
bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 3072
For the changes to take effect, you must restart the OS.
Detailed information on using the UserVA parameter can be found in this article.

Windows XP x64, Vista x64, 7 x64 and 8.x x64
On 64-bit versions of Windows, there is a strong drop in performance up to 1 frame per second, probably due to the peculiarities of this architecture and font properties. Solution - remove the font Gothic3.ttf from the root of Gothic 3 or replace it with a lite version. If you have an addon installed, the same operation must be carried out with a font from the folder %WINDIR%\Fonts. Gothic 3 v1.75 doesn't have this problem. default instead of Gothic3.ttf standard font is used Comic Sans MS, and other fonts can be specified in the ge3.ini file (parameters GUI.DefaultFont and GUI.DefaultFontBold).

Problems with ATI HD4xxx video cards
Missing shadows and flickering textures, as in this video.
Solution:
- Install Catalyst 9.2 or below.
- Copy file atiumdag.dll from Catalyst version 9.2 (or lower) to the game folder (Windows Vista/7/8.x only).

Problems with ATI HD5xxx-6xxx video cards
In the game, all textures look striped, as in the screenshot.
Solution:
- Disable shadows in the game settings.
- Install Gothic 3 Community Patch 1.74 or 1.75 and activate the missing shadows workaround for ATI/AMD drivers.
