Mounting on the walls is carried out using special holders - latches that fix both pipes (hot and cold) side by side. Fasteners must be carried out every 50 cm to avoid deflection of pipes under their own weight.

Also, when installing polypropylene pipes, it is necessary to take into account a sufficiently large thermal expansion of plastic, therefore, when embedded in walls, it is recommended to use the "pipe-in-pipe" or "pipe-in-plastic sleeve" system so that there is a small gap that allows the pipe to expand in the wall under the influence temperature fluctuations.

Pipes are made of polymeric materials, they are not subject to any types of corrosion,
neither electrical nor chemical, respectively, do not overgrow with deposits from the inside, do not conduct stray currents.

Polypropylene pipes have a long service life - about 50 years. The low thermal conductivity of the pipe material makes it possible not to use thermal insulation. To connect to metal communications, plastic fittings with built-in threads are used. There are also plastic taps (metal inside, plastic outside).

Having decided to replace metal water pipes with plastic ones, you invariably face a choice: what type of pipes to supply? Today the market offers a sufficient number of types of pipes made of polymeric materials: plastic (polypropylene, polyethylene, cross-linked polyethylene, etc.) and metal-plastic pipes with a combined polyethylene-aluminum-polyethylene structure. Moreover, each of these types has its own varieties depending on the design, material and method of manufacture. However, it is possible to note the general properties inherent in all types of plastic pipes, both positive and negative.

General properties of plastic pipes

Meeting the main requirements for pipes - durability and reliability, pipes made of polymeric materials simultaneously combine other positive consumer qualities, such as:

  • low cost compared to metal pipes;
  • low rate of formation of limescale, associated with this narrowing of the inner diameter of the pipe and the presence of a number of various microorganisms and bacteria;
  • resistance to pollution and corrosion; low thermal conductivity;
  • quick and easy assembly and disassembly.

The disadvantages of pipes made of polymeric materials include:

  • certain restrictions on the maximum temperature and pressure of water when used in heating and plumbing systems;
  • the need to use different technologies for the installation of each type of pipe;
  • combustibility of the material of plastic pipelines, which is especially important for high-rise buildings.

Thus, when replacing pipes with plastic ones, their advantages far outweigh the disadvantages, while each of the listed types has its own specifics, features and individual properties.

Metal-polymer pipes

Having appeared on the construction market in the early 80s, metal-polymer pipes immediately began to be actively used in heating systems, internal cold and hot water supply. Since then, the technologies for the production of such pipes have improved significantly, which was determined by the following reasons: an increase in the market share of plastic systems; an increased need for innovation to increase sales; the possibility of blocking the penetration of oxygen into plastic heating systems.

The main advantage of multilayer metal-plastic pipes in heating and water supply systems is the combination of the advantages of plastic and metal pipes into one combined material that has good corrosion resistance and flexibility, combined with sufficient tensile strength.

XLPE pipes

Cross-linked polyethylene is one of the polymeric materials obtained by the method of chemical cross-linking of high-density polyethylene molecules under conditions of high pressure and temperature. Pipes made of cross-linked polyethylene have good mechanical and physico-chemical properties, among the operational and installation advantages of such pipes can be noted: the possibility of using in radiator and floor heating, in hot and domestic drinking water supply; resistance to chemical compounds; high degree of resistance to mechanical stress; the ability to withstand several freeze-thaw cycles; low coefficient of thermal conductivity ensures slow cooling of the coolant in the system; flexibility of pipes, allowing them to be bent to the required angle by cold bending; molecular shape memory, allowing you to easily correct the wrong bend.

One of the main disadvantages when replacing pipes with plastic ones made of cross-linked polyethylene is the high diffusion (penetration) of oxygen, which leads to additional corrosion of the equipment, as well as the possibility of damage by rodents.

Polypropylene pipes

Polypropylene is a long-established and well-proven material for pipes of cold and hot water supply systems. The main advantage of polypropylene is the possibility of welding and, accordingly, the use of cheap connecting elements. At the same time, the product range is represented by the widest range of such elements.

Due to low cost and availability, exceptional simplicity and speed of installation, polypropylene pipes are especially popular when replacing pipes with plastic ones and occupy a significant market share.

Of course, when replacing pipes with plastic ones, in each specific situation, it is necessary to calculate the technical and economic feasibility of using one or another type of material. But in general, when comparing plastic pipes made of polypropylene, cross-linked polyethylene and metal-plastic according to the criteria of price / quality / availability, polypropylene pipelines will have an advantage.

Sometimes it happens that due to violations in the production process or the use of low-quality materials, "bumps" appear on the plastic pipes of heating systems over time. These defects in the pipe can subsequently lead to its breakthrough. Here you can't get by with an ordinary collar. In this case, it is best to replace the damaged section of the pipe with a new piece in advance. Doing it yourself is not at all difficult.

To do this, you need the following materials, tools:

  • a knife designed to work with plastic pipes,
  • "lerka", designed to clean the pipe from the foil,
  • soldering iron,
  • tape measure or construction meter,
  • dry rag,
  • a piece of plastic pipe designed for heating / hot water,
  • two plastic couplings designed to connect pipes.

An iron, a “lerku” and scissors for plastic pipes are easy to purchase at a specialized store. As a rule, these tools are sold in the same department as pipes.

Work order

At the very beginning, you need to make sure that there is no water in the pipes. If necessary, turn off the water in the basement.

After that, we start working with a plastic pipe. First, you need to determine the exact size of the pipe section that needs to be replaced. Measure it with a meter or tape measure. At the same time, an overlap of two to three centimeters must be taken into account at the bottom and at the top. Mark the borders with a pencil.

Then, on the prepared section of the pipe, we measure the required size with a tape measure.

We make the appropriate marks with a pencil.

We take special scissors and cut out a section of a new serviceable pipe - they will replace the unusable part of the main pipe. After that, we cut off the marked section of the damaged pipe that needs to be replaced with scissors.

Processing the ends of the pipeline

We process the ends of the main pipeline with a "lerka", we clean them from the foil. The length of the machined surface should be equal to one second of the length of the plastic sleeve. Dry the ends of the pipes with a clean rag. We do the same with the ends of the pipe section prepared for replacement.

We take an iron for soldering, plug it into the network, put it on a special stand. What temperature is required for soldering, you can find out in the store from the sales assistant.

Now we insert the upper end of the main pipe into the hole of the heated iron, and insert the sleeve into this soldering iron from the reverse side. With a little effort, we scroll the iron for almost an average level of plastic melting. Then we remove the coupling from the iron, release the end of the pipe from the iron and immediately, without delay, connect the melted ends of the pipe and the coupling. At the same time, it is necessary to ensure that the parts are tightly joined when connected, so that there are no irregularities, gaps.

The sequence of actions for soldering the remaining parts and parts is similar to that described.

The main thing in this process is not to overexpose the iron. Otherwise, the parts may be deformed and damaged.

In addition, make sure that soldering is carried out on dry surfaces. That is, before soldering, carefully wipe the ends of the parts, let them dry completely.

In houses built in the 60-70s, steel pipes are installed, the service life of which is 40-50 years. Most are already subject to replacement due to the expiration of the operational period.

  • Resistance to corrosion, aggressive environments;
  • High strength;
  • Environmental friendliness;
  • Smooth inner surface. This feature prevents the accumulation of dirt and grease deposits, which increases the service life without the need for regular maintenance.

Replacement of water pipes in apartment buildings is carried out by public utilities as a planned procedure. But most of the apartments have been privatized, sections of the pipeline up to the shut-off valve and risers are undergoing planned reconstruction. Inside the apartment, the wiring changes at the expense of the owner. Urgent replacement is required in the following cases:

  • When the pipeline is worn out;
  • When a leak occurs;
  • With a critical pressure drop.

Water and sewer pipes are installed inside the apartments after the dismantling of the old pipeline. The process is time-consuming, requiring professionalism, accuracy and time-consuming. When doing it yourself, the following difficulties are encountered:

  • When replacing water supply pipes, experience and the ability to use a special tool for installing systems from various materials are required;
  • The replacement of sewer pipes should be carried out carefully, since it is almost impossible to disconnect the connection to the riser, minted with sulfur, without damaging the riser itself;
  • Therefore, if you are not confident in your abilities, it is better not to risk it - experienced plumbers will perform the work quickly and safely.

Installation of sewerage - connection of individual sections of the pipeline with a seal in the form of rubber gaskets. Connection of sockets of drain pipes, connection of wash basins, toilet bowls, bathtubs;

Plumbing installation - open or hidden laying of pipelines using a press tool, a soldering iron, scissors and a wall chaser.

Speaking about the replacement of water pipes, one cannot fail to note the need to install a water consumption meter. Installation of a water meter is carried out immediately after the filter and reducer, which stabilizes the pressure inside the pipeline.

In old houses, where engineering systems have been standing since the days of developed socialism, the replacement of pipelines is a top priority. Instead of steel and copper, plastic pipes are installed as the most preferred option both in terms of physical properties and price.

Polypropylene pipes have many advantages over metal pipes, because:

  • not afraid of corrosion and the formation of calcium deposits;
  • protected from stray currents;
  • resistant to both high and low temperatures;
  • do not burst when the water in the system freezes;
  • easy to install without time-consuming welding;
  • are much cheaper than metal pipes.

Another important advantage of PP pipes over metal pipes is their low thermal conductivity. When the coolant passes through polypropylene pipes, its thermal energy is not spent on heating the pipeline, as is the case with steel or copper pipes.

Due to this, the replacement of metal pipes with polypropylene pipes in the heating system can increase the heat transfer of radiators by 40%. The service life of PP pipes for hot water and heating systems reaches 25 years, and for cold water supply - 50 years.

Replacement of plumbing and heating system pipes with polypropylene

Installation of a new pipeline based on PP pipes can be done with minimal experience and a simple arsenal of tools.

First you need to draw up a diagram of a new engineering system, mark the sections where new pipes will run. You can navigate old pipes by measuring their length and drawing a wiring diagram on paper.

Before starting work, you should prepare the necessary equipment and materials, paying special attention to the type of pipes that will be used.

Tools needed for work:

  • grinder for cutting old metal pipes;
  • special wrenches for twisting threaded connections;
  • soldering iron for PP-pipes ("iron").

Depending on the engineering system to be upgraded, you need to buy the appropriate types of pipes. They differ in diameter and wall thickness, presence/absence of a reinforcing layer, nominal temperature and pressure in the system.

Note! These parameters can be specified in the housing office or the management company (for an apartment building), or see the engineering system project (for a private house).

For the installation of heating systems, pipes reinforced with aluminum or fiberglass with a diameter of 20, 25 and 32 mm are used. The greater the length of the pipeline, the larger the cross section of the pipe should be.
