Twenty years later, Camilla behaves confidently and sedately in front of journalists: as, for example, during a visit to the Jewish Care's Brenmer Center for the elderly in East London. What is worth only her dance to "Hava Nagila": improvisation, which is hardly possible to imagine performed by other members of the royal family. It is surprising, however, what a long way she had to go to win the love of ordinary people.
Yes, things were very different two decades ago. Princess Diana then died quite recently, and, according to the overwhelming majority, it was Camilla who should have carried the main burden of responsibility for the national tragedy. After all, if not for her, then Charles would never have divorced Diana, and the Princess of Wales would never have had an affair with Dodi al-Fayed, and even more so would not have fallen into a death trap in Paris (Camilla Parker Bowles: the story of Diana and Charles her eyes).
It is noteworthy that even the Queen laid all the blame for the breakup of the royal couple on Camilla, and not on her eldest son. However, Her Majesty was wise enough to move away from this affair, no longer hindering him. Charles conceived to reach the heart of his mother with the help of Sir Angus Ogilvy, the husband of Princess Alexandra. But in order for the Queen to accept the choice of her son, it was necessary to do the impossible - to forever change the attitude of the subjects towards Camilla.

Inside, she was warmly welcomed by the owners, but, interestingly, no one was waiting for her outside: when her car arrived at the place, only a few people were standing on the street - and then, they were just waiting for the bus at the nearest stop. Agree, this is so unlike how the streets of cities across the country are waiting for the same Dukes of Cambridge or Sussex.
Moreover, she still has to seek contact with her new family. Yes, even Princes William and Harry publicly show their support for her. And yet, in private, her relationship with the Windsors is still not as warm as it might seem. Until now, Camilla feels uncomfortable at family holidays - and tries, for example, to leave Sandringham as early as possible on Christmas. Even life in Highgrove, with its eternal conveyor of servants and courtiers, wears her down and forces her to seek peace in her only refuge - the Rey Mill House, which she bought after her divorce from Andrew Parker Bowles.
And every day she has to look for the answer to just one question: who will she become in the near future?
Does she want to be Queen? Or is she quite content, as her courtiers say, with the prospect of becoming a princess consort? Perhaps the clue lies in the recent case, when remarks about the “princess consort” were removed from all official websites of the royal family. But whose desire is it really - her personal or still Prince Charles, who all his life dreamed of making her his queen?
She went such a long way to reassure her subjects about her persona. So does she really need to once again provoke the wrath of a nation that, albeit not with the same force, still remembers the role Camilla played in the marriage of Charles and Diana. In 2017, for example, a poll dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the death of the Princess of Wales showed that only 14% of citizens want Camilla to be crowned along with Charles. A good solution to the problem would be an official statement by Her Majesty, who would wish Camilla to still become Queen after her death. But at present, there is no indication that Elizabeth would do such a thing. And this puts the Duchess of Cornwall in a very vulnerable position - something that Charles, unfortunately, still cannot understand. As a result, instead of spending time with her grandchildren and enjoying life, Camilla, at 71, has to live in anticipation of another crisis, and possibly a constitutional dispute.
The thing is that some experts tend to consider the marriage of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall illegal: in their opinion, members of the royal family do not have the right to marry, confirmed by a civil ceremony. And although at one time Clarence House brought the necessary clarity to this issue and stated that the union of Their Highnesses is absolutely legal, critics may well make themselves felt when the question of Camilla's coronation is put squarely.
But even with this knowledge, as, indeed, with thousands of other “buts” in her future destiny, Camilla continues to support her husband and just do her job, albeit not as glamorous as Kate or Megan do (remember how recently Camille walked through the corridor of honor built by garbage collectors.) But the Duchess of Cornwall knows her place, knows the rules of the game and knows her purpose. And she has long demonstrated to everyone that she is a tough nut to crack.
