All these questions are often asked to me in my environment and in social networks. Therefore, I finally decided to open this topic and write an article.

Who am I and why did I take the liberty of writing about how to become an interior designer.

My name is Pavel Gerasimov. I am an interior designer and co-director of the Geometrium workshop.

A few years ago I asked myself the same question, but couldn't get started. How much yourselfI remember I always liked to watch "Housing issue" on NTV and dreamed of becoming a designer.

When I finally got tired of dreaming, I took interior design courses, but the first problem I encountered was that we didn't study interiors there. We drew lines, circles, painted a sheet of paper with different colors, and I sincerely did not understand how I would apply this in my work.

My patience quickly ran out and I took my first cafe bar project for "free". A lot of questions arose during the project. I ran to designers and architects for advice, and so, with their help, I completed the first project. As a token of gratitude, I received the first, quite decent, money from the client.

About 15-20 large and small projects have already been done. I strive for teamwork and development.

In my opinion, a designer is a practitioner. The more practice a designer has, the more competent he is. It is very important to experiment, to delve into the essence, into the properties of materials. It is very important to delve into engineering things and have an idea of ​​​​how to bring this or that solution to life. The end result of a designer is not what he draws or invents, but what he brings to life. Everyone goes their own way and, as a result, becomes professionals in their field.

How to become an interior designer - 4 ways to develop

In the process of learning and communicating with real designers, I have identified 4 ways to develop a designer from scratch.

The first way is specialized education at the institute for 4-6 years

This is probably the best and proven method over the years. At the institute you can get a huge store of knowledge. You will have time to study each topic in great detail. Ergonomics, color, materials and more.

Also from the pluses I can note that education can be obtained for free. The only downside is that you have to spend at least 6 years (preparing for admission + training).

Another minus is (minus for some, plus for some), in addition to the real practice of interior design, there are a huge number of items that have nothing to do with design, but which you have to spend time and take tests.

The second way - interior design courses

Pros: the courses are designed for 1-2 years of intensive study. Nothing superfluous - only specialized knowledge. Often, this is a shortened and simplified program of the institute.

Cons: often, teachers in these schools do not have a lot of practical experience (the same disadvantage is found in institutes). It happens that a person who has studied at an institute does not realize himself as a practicing designer (he did not get a job, did not find clients on his own), in this case he has no choice but to transfer knowledge at the same institute, or in some another educational institution (for example, design courses).

The price for such courses starts from 80 thousand to 500 thousand rubles or more (if we take full-fledged one-year programs, and not “design in 2 weeks”).

The third way is to learn from a practicing designer

You can get a job as an apprentice, you can ask for advice, ask to teach, and, in some cases, pay money for them.

Of the benefits: you can immediately practice under the guidance of a designer. You can get quick results without too much theory. Just to the point and to the point.

Of the minuses: it can be difficult and not easy. You need to be able to grasp and learn quickly. Since a professional in his field usually has very little time.

The fourth way is self-learning

Perhaps this is the longest and most difficult path. I call it "All by myself". You can spend years shoveling through a bunch of books. Fill bumps and correct your mistakes. I highly recommend doing everything on your own. Still, it is better to ask the advice of an "experienced" one. This will greatly simplify your life. Especially if you want to implement projects at a construction site.

Is it necessary to be able to draw?

Of course, it is desirable to be able to, but this is not a prerequisite. The ability to draw helps in the development of a designer, but this is not a prerequisite, as practice shows. I talked with professional designers who draw so-so, but their projects are very worthy. There is no need to learn how to draw before you start learning design. In the process, you can develop in different directions: draw by hand, design in 3D max, sketch up, develop project design working drawings. In this age of technology, the ability to draw is becoming an auxiliary skill for a designer.

Let's recap. Whichever path you choose will be correct. It is important to remember that practice and theory are two different things. It is necessary to gain knowledge, but it is also important to consolidate them in practice. Do as many projects as possible, ask for advice, until they begin to turn to you for advice. And even when they begin to apply, continue to consult with authoritative people. After all, an interior designer is a constant process of development.

When choosing a university, be sure to pay attention to whether the institute has state accreditation. Otherwise, having spent 4-5 years of your life studying at a university, you run the risk of getting a non-state diploma in your hands, which is of dubious value in the eyes of your potential employer.

What exams do future designers take?

The classic package of documents of an applicant entering the university must necessarily include homework - usually from 6 to 10 works.

For admission, you will need a standard set of documents, plus you will also need to provide at least ten works of painting and drawing. Get ready for the passage of a rather difficult competition. If you did, congratulations! Now you have to study here for six years to get your degree.

The third university is the Moscow State University of Design and Technology. It has a division called the Institute of Design, where you will be trained in the specialty "Design" with the qualification "Environment Designer". You will have to study here for the same standard six years. To enter, you must pass a test, which takes the form of viewing copyrighted works in drawing, composition and painting (there must be at least ten works), you will additionally have to pass exams in painting, composition and drawing, pass tests in Russian language and literature, cultural history.

Next, let's talk about the Institute of Design and Applied Arts, which is part of the Moscow State University of Service. Here they offer you training in the specialty "Interior and Applied Arts". You also need to study for six years. For admission, you will need to pass exams - composition (profiling) and competitive - painting, drawing, pass two tests - Russian languages ​​​​and Russian history.

Moscow State Textile Academy. A.N. Kosygin is in fifth place on our list. It offers training in a special specialization - "Artistic Design of Fabrics for the Interior." The training lasts from three and a half to six years.

The Humanities and Applied Institute of MPEI TU is in sixth place. It offers training in the specialty "Artistic Design of Residential and Public Interiors". Entrance tests - standard, full.

Next come non-state universities in the capital of Russia. They do not impose strict criteria for admission and select applicants based on the results of an interview and viewing creative works (at least five). These universities include the Institute of Open Business Education, the Faculty of Practical Design. Full-time (full-time) form of training in design is offered. The course program is designed for five and a half years of study. The program includes such blocks of disciplines as: engineering, art and design and humanitarian. In Moscow, there are short-term courses where you can learn design, which, of course, have their pros and cons. There are a little more courses than universities or, say, institutes. The disadvantages of the courses include - insufficiently deep and practical knowledge (compared to the university). The pluses include - a floating study schedule (you can study both in the morning and in the evening, in the afternoon or on a weekend), you do not pass the competition for admission, and the courses do not last as long as studying at a university.

Very often, the training provided by courses or a design school provides only a superficial knowledge of the subject, but at the same time you will also receive modern practical solutions that will help you navigate the field of design on whether you want to continue to design in the future, and how. It often happens that, having entered a university and studied there for several years, you realize that you no longer want to engage in your chosen profession in the future. At the end of the course, if desired, you can continue your studies in the chosen specialty at the university.

Moscow design schools offer an average solution between courses and programs of universities. For example, it offers design training from scratch. The term of study lasts from five months to one year and depends on the specialty you choose, the form of study (full-time - morning, afternoon, evening; part-time - morning or afternoon; and special intensive for summer - morning or afternoon), and there are also tutorials here. The "Training Center on Tverskaya" offers, in addition to design design courses, courses for florists and interior decorators. The course in the center is designed for 50 academic hours and costs an average of about five to seven thousand rubles per course.

The profession of an interior designer is one of the most prestigious in the modern world. And the belief that this profession is the choice of exclusively creative people is fundamentally wrong. So what does it take to be a successful designer?

If you are determined to become an interior designer, then the ability to draw, alas, is not enough.

It is necessary to master several related disciplines, such as the theory of architecture, construction standards, lighting and phytodesign, and the basics of urban planning.

In Moscow, there are several universities that offer applicants to study at the Faculty of Practical Design (or environmental design).

The term of study is 6 years. The Moscow State University of Culture and Arts also has a design department. Upon admission, you must pass an exam in your specialty and pass traditional tests in the Russian language and history of Russia.

There is also a design faculty at the Moscow State University of Service, where, upon admission, you will have to pass a test in the Russian language, Russian history and pass a competition in composition, painting and drawing.

Recently, faculties of environmental design are being opened in other art or construction institutes and universities.

Non-state universities conduct only an interview and consider the submitted drawings (at least 5 works).

Now let's talk about courses. Compare yourself. At the university, the term of study is 5-6 years. The courses offer you to complete the entire program in a maximum of 1 year, or even less. Naturally, most related disciplines will be missed.

The second point is that even the most prestigious courses do not guarantee employment, while universities usually work with several specialized organizations.
Thirdly, the courses are not cheap. And the more prestigious the course, the more round the sum will have to pay for education.

Without special education

The profession appeared long ago, when there were no special universities teaching this art.

And now, many designers are learning the basics of the profession, which is called "in the field", without taking courses and without prior training.

So is it possible to become a designer without special training? You can, if you are ready to put everything on the "altar of victory": nerves, efforts, time and willpower.

Self-education is a serious thing. And only a true fan of his craft will master the road.
