Which pvc profile to choose for the balcony. Which windows are better to put on the balcony: plastic or aluminum? Types of glass for windows

The double-glazed window is the main constructive component of the window, it is approximately 80% of the entire structure. The ability of plastic window structures with respect to sound insulation and thermal insulation directly depends on the double-glazed window. If neither you nor your relatives work in a production workshop, then it will be difficult to independently decide on the right choice of a plastic window for glazing a balcony. Let's figure it out.

In residential premises of the middle zone of our country, it is not necessary to install single-chamber views - they are made of two glasses. In them, the level of thermal insulation is approximately 40% lower than the permissible norms for the thermal protection of residential premises. The use of this type can lead to sweating and freezing of plastic windows, and therefore, a decrease in the temperature in the room.

The only exceptions are balcony blocks, when the room is glazed in a “cold” way without planning further internal insulation, only in this case the installation of a single-chamber double-glazed window is allowed.
A valid and recommended option is to install only two-chamber windows (two cameras between three panes). The thermal insulation characteristics of a double-glazed window are acceptable to the norms of thermal protection of premises. The same recommendations apply to the choice of plastic windows for the balcony, which is planned to be insulated and used as an additional usable area of the apartment. Step-by-step recommendations can be found in the article "".

Single chamber package with thermal insulation

The option of using a single-chamber double-glazed window is not excluded, if a special heat-insulating layer is applied to one of the glasses. A coating of this type is fully located to preserve heat inside the room, working on the principle of a thermal mirror, that is, it reflects heat. In this case, the ability to retain heat in a single-chamber window structure with a heat-insulating coating, in contrast to a two-chamber structure that has ordinary glass, increases by about 20%.

  • With all this, the heat-insulating coating has a good transmittance of sunlight, like the most ordinary glass.
  • Another advantage of this type of glazing is that it is about 1.5 times lighter than a two-chamber glazing, which hints at an increase in strength and reliability and eliminates the possibility of unwanted sagging of the sash.
  • Of course, the price of plastic windows also decreases if a single-chamber double-glazed window with a heat-insulating coating is used.
  • The warranty period with the existing heat-insulating layer varies within twenty years.

When choosing a profile, it is necessary to take into account the strength of the window structure and the appearance of the profile itself. Today, the market presents profile systems of various manufacturing companies that are responsible for the high quality of their product. These include Schuco KBE, Gealan, Veka, Alyplast, Rehau, Salamander, Thyssen. Each of the profile brands has several systems with different chamber numbers (the number of which is 3 or more).

How is the cost of glazing

Naturally, the greater the number of profile cameras available, the more expensive it will be, but this also increases thermal insulation. Accordingly, the qualities of a 5-chamber profile for saving heat are much higher than the same qualities of a three-chamber profile by about 40%. But, looking at the metal-plastic window structure, it becomes immediately clear that the profile does not take up much space from the total area (only 20 percent). Heat retention directly depends on the type of double-glazed window. Based on the fact, the number of cameras available in the profile does not play a special role, but will only pull the price. But, you need to consider that wider window systems look more aesthetically pleasing.

How convenient it will be to use the glazed space of the balcony depends very much on which balcony windows are selected and installed. If earlier there was nothing to choose from and everyone installed the same wooden frames, now the production offers a wide range of options for balcony windows. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, so before making a final decision, think about which balcony windows are best for you.

Types of balcony windows

It is possible to divide windows on a balcony into groups based on different signs.

For thermal insulation properties:

  • Warm;
  • cold;
  • Intermediate.

Profile material:

  • Wood;
  • Aluminum;
  • Plastic.
Combined options are also possible, when aluminum is combined with wood or plastic.

By type of shutters:

  • Sliding;
  • Swing.
Each type has its own advantages, but also its own weaknesses. This must be taken into account when determining which balcony windows are best for your balcony.

Types of glass for windows:

  • K-glass, low-emission, energy-saving;
  • I-glass, has a lower light absorption coefficient;
  • Triplex glass;
  • Strained glass.

Advantages and disadvantages of different types of balcony windows

Let's sort it out in order. Windows designed for warm glazing are multi-chamber double-glazed windows. Their weight and cost will be greater than that of double-glazed windows for cold glazing, which are produced single. In this aspect, it is difficult to talk about the advantages and disadvantages, since each type of glazing solves its own problems. Cold glazing will protect you only from natural precipitation. Before warm glazing, the task is to create a certain microclimate.

Important technical characteristics of double-glazed windows

  • Gap between glasses- the more, the less noise will be heard from the street. In expensive windows, gas is pumped in between them, most often argon, to improve thermal insulation.
  • Glass thickness- the more, the less chance for the appearance of the resonance effect and any vibrations.
  • Chamber tightness- if it is not there, then cold air will enter there and reduce the quality of thermal insulation, or maybe completely nullify it.
The more chambers in a double-glazed window, the higher its thermal insulation properties, but it must be borne in mind that more is not indefinitely. Two or three chambers will be quite enough even for the most severe Siberian winters.

Which is better, wood, metal or plastic?

The advantages of plastic double-glazed windows are:

  • Ease of use;
  • Long service life;
  • Reliability;
  • High-quality sound insulation;
  • Good thermal insulation;
  • A variety of options and affordability makes it easy to choose the right option.

The disadvantages of plastic profiles can be conditionally attributed to the fact that the material is unnatural. Conditionally, because the plastic used is completely safe for human health.

The advantages of wooden double-glazed windows are:

The disadvantages include cost. Such profiles will cost you more than plastic ones.

The advantages of aluminum profiles are:

  • Low cost;
  • A light weight;
  • Attractive appearance;
  • Strength;
  • Fewer barriers to natural light;
  • Great for large glazing areas;
  • Reliable;
  • durable;
  • Not exposed to aggressive environment;
  • Suitable for both warm and cold glazing.

Despite the long list of advantages, aluminum is still not often used for glazing in residential areas, especially for a warm option. This is due to the high cost of warm profiles. Aluminum is used for cold glazing, but this option cannot be called the most comfortable possible.

Sliding or hinged?

The main advantage of sliding doors is their ability to save space. But for warm glazing, this option is not used, usually only for cold glazing and for aluminum profiles. Therefore, another drawback appears - at negative temperatures, the sashes can freeze to each other and create problems with opening windows.

Swinging or pivoting sashes are most common. They are convenient to use, but when opened, the window takes up a lot of space. The most successful option today can be considered a combined option, when the swing doors are complemented by a folding mechanism.

How to put windows on the balcony

The installation of balcony windows is most often trusted by specialists. Many companies offer free installation when buying double-glazed windows from them, so there is no point in wasting your own time on installation. Also, the guarantee for double-glazed windows applies only if the installation was carried out by the company's specialists.

Let's summarize. It is impossible to give a definite answer which balcony windows are better. Many factors need to be taken into account. What type of glazing do you want to make warm or cold? What is important to you in window profiles? Write down your own criteria and wishes, and this will help you make the right choice.

myths

Myths of warm balcony glazing

For ease of operation of remote structures of modern apartments, usual or frameless glazing of balconies and loggias PVC profile, aluminum, wooden blocks. This allows you to protect the load-bearing structures, internal lining from moisture, weathering. Due to the design features warm glazing is effective only for loggias. The best option for a balcony are sliding aluminum frames in combination with the decoration of internal walls, parapet.

To receive maximum effect when arranging remote structures with minimum repair budget you need to know the basic terminology, know the design of the balcony, loggia:

    the plate resting on the side walls is loggia ;

    a cantilevered slab fixed in the outer wall without side supports refers to balconies ;

    the loggia can adjoin with one or two ends to the neighboring loggia, warm or cold wall of the building;

    balconies in some typical projects high-rise buildings » adjoin exclusively to each other.

Therefore, prices for glazing balconies and loggias will be guaranteed uneven . In the first case, you need three blocks, in the second variant it is enough one block above the parapet.

Glazing of balconies and loggias is inexpensive only when choosing aluminum profiles with single glass, single-chamber double-glazed window. PVC profile is more expensive, sliding frames also increase the repair budget.

Heat losses through the balcony slab, open on all sides, are maximum. To reduce them, a large amount of heat insulator will be required on the lower, upper slab, and the inner surface of the parapet. Thus, the customer will receive a minimum usable area at the price of a used car, which is not economically feasible for placing a dozen planters with flowers or one comfortable rocking chair inside the resulting room...

Loggias high-quality insulation at a much lower cost, more working area. The room can be attached to a room or used as full-fledged office, winter garden.

When communicating with professional builders, the customer should use correct terminology:

    bay windows are loggias or balconies, protruding from the contours of the main building without support in the lower part (overhanging floor slabs);

    if the balcony of the first floor rests on the base of the house, this design is called rhisolite ;

    the loggia that does not protrude beyond the main wall is not a bay window, despite the complex configuration of the walls;

    any of these structures lacks the concept of " width', the term ' depth' indicating distance from the parapet to the plane of the main wall of the building in which the doorway is made.

When choosing a glazing company for the specified remote structures, the proposal of warm glazing of your balcony is automatically a sign of the incompetence of its employees. Despite the low prices in the price list, it is better to refuse her services.

Ways of glazing loggias

Installation of translucent structures on the loggia classified according to:

    PVC - rather heavy window blocks, which significantly load the parapet, are suitable for warm glazing ;

    aluminum profile - minimum structural loads suitable only for cold glazing;

    the form - straight blocks above loggia parapets, L-shaped, U-shaped blocks for balconies, complex configuration for elite projects.

The choice of material for the profile of window blocks depends entirely on the budget of the customer.:

    if existing thin corner parapet planned to be left, its strength characteristics will not allow the use of PVC window blocks with precision fittings located inside them, a skew of 3 mm under intense wind loads will lead to jamming of the lock;

    lightweight sliding aluminum frames save working space, minimally load the parapet;

    when replacing an operating enclosing structure with a solid parapet on a balcony, it is recommended to choose partition foam blocks or aerated concrete blocks with light weight;

    for the loggia can be used heavier facing brick, allowing you to do without the subsequent decoration of the outer surface of the parapet;

    when choosing remote design the wall of the parapet is laid out strictly vertically, the brackets from the corner, protruding outward, are fixed with self-tapping screws into the masonry.

The main nuances of high-quality fastening of window blocks with various glazing schemes for remote structures of the dwelling:

    when using an operated or newly manufactured parapet, the lower part of the window block is securely fixed to its upper plane;

    the upper part is located along the very edge of the upper balcony slab, which has insufficient strength for anchors;

    That's why glazing plane shifts inward, anchors are fixed vertically, the frame can't fall out from intense wind loads;

    at remote glazing the vertical plane of the window unit is further than the edge of the slab default;

    the lower part is attached to the longitudinal platform lying on the brackets;

    the height of the window block is 7-10 cm less than the distance between the parapet and the top plate;

    attached to the upper plane of the window block galvanized sheet, extending outward by 15 - 25 cm ( visor ), stepping inside the balcony slab by 40 - 60 cm;

    after checking the verticality of the elements of the window block, this sheet is fixed to the upper floor slab at a distance of 20–30 cm from the inner surface of the frames;

    the design acquires the necessary rigidity, has one degree of freedom due to the flexibility of the galvanized sheet.

Wind loads cannot tip the window unit out/in, the plate has a slope that provides rainwater runoff and is protective visor. Outside, the loggia is lined with their own hands siding or professional sheet before installation of the window block after installation / strengthening of the parapet. Otherwise, you will have to unnecessarily hang over the parapet, and clothing items and hand tools in pockets will can damage the painted surface of the window profile.

To reduce the repair budget, increase the privacy of personal space the side walls of the balcony are often made opaque. Despite the outward resemblance deaf side frame on the loggia with sheathing the frame with siding elements, profiled sheet, these two technologies are different . Mounting the outer cladding on the inner frame of a galvanized profile or corner is cheaper than an opaque PVC plate in the frame sash - three times more expensive . In the first case, outdoor cleaning impossible, in the second version sash can be opened for occasional cleaning.

The entire glazing process (regardless of whether the balcony or loggia is equipped by the customer) using the most rational scheme consists of stages:

    design definition - either warm loggia for year-round use, or beautiful balcony decoration with cold glazing;

    preparation - demolition of the building envelope, parapet construction or strengthening of the operated fence;

    outdoor decoration - lining of the outer plane of the parapet, production of blind side walls if necessary (only for balconies );

    window unit installation - sliding or pvc swing-out frames, only aluminum sliding doors, remote structures to increase the working area;

    interior decoration - heat insulator installation, electrical wiring, partial or decorative cladding.

Exclusive option is an joining the loggia, installation of underfloor heating or heating registers. Attaching a balcony will increase heat loss in the house, increase the repair budget, at least fivefold . Therefore, this technology is considered economically inefficient..

Warm and cold glazing technology

Each owner will agree that spending money on the installation of any translucent structures with a resource of less than 25 years is both stupid and expensive. Therefore, to install cold aluminum frames, you must perform the following steps:

    revision of the operated fence - in 80% of cases there are two railing attachment points on each side, the slab is partially destroyed by moisture, weathering, the width of the parapet does not exceed 3 cm, its plane is extended to the edge of the slab;

    strengthening - the strength of the existing structure is able to withstand the weight of the outer cladding, so it is left, reinforcing the vertical reinforcement with a bar ( clamps or tightening with soft wire); to support the window block is made timber frame, slightly shifted inside the balcony;

    block installation - frames are fixed on all sides(anchor pitch 0.6 m) to the manufactured load-bearing frame;

    structural sealing - junction points to slabs, walls foam up(cutting off excess only after drying), protected additional elements(slats, corners, ebbs, visors).

When the frames are taken out on the brackets, the upper assembly is not fastened with straight anchors, but through a galvanized sheet. Double-glazed windows on a loggia inside a warm PVC profile have three times more weight than aluminum translucent structures. To mount them on the operated railing, a reinforced frame made of timber will not work. The optimal way is complete dismantling of the existing fence, laying a new parapet of lightweight concrete. Foam blocks are cheaper, aerated concrete has a maximum resource, much stronger. Ceramic, clinker brick will reduce the cost of exterior decoration, but will require higher qualification of a specialist, making masonry. Blinds on the loggia add little load to the parapet, allow you to qualitatively regulate the luminous flux.

Glazing of balconies and loggias with aluminum profiles, produced by transoms of several opening schemes .

When choosing the type of opening of frames, it should be remembered that:

    the hinged, folding sash, when opened, tends to push the parapet outward due to its own weight, the upper part of the block into the room;

    with a sharp gust of wind, the forces increase many times;

    SNiP norms only internal opening of the transom is allowed, which drastically reduces the working space of an already small room;

    hinged sashes eliminate the aforementioned inconveniences and ideal for outrigger structures.

Finishing of balconies and loggias Full construction » in addition to aesthetic appearance should provide the most comfortable use of the premises. To do this, experts recommend using the rule " three wings»:

    the length of straight sections covered by translucent structures is divided by a multiple of three ( 3 ) within 60 - 80 cm (for example, for 2 m of space, three wings of 66.6 cm are obtained);

    two side wings are made deaf, the middle one is tilt-and-turn;

    if necessary, the user can reach from the outside to each double-glazed window during wet cleaning.

Repair " Full construction » allows you to conduct electrical wiring on balconies and loggias, install electric underfloor heating.

Thermal insulation of the power frame

Prices warm balconies and loggias « Full construction » automatically include thermal insulation of load-bearing structures. The recommended sequence of warming is as follows:

    thermal insulation of the bottom plate - screed with a self-leveling mixture over a layer of insulation, followed by tiling (only for loggias), laying basalt wool between wooden logs with sheathing laminate, OSB, Chipboard, decking, parquet board;

    installation of stone wool on the parapet, walls - produced after installation of window sills;

    top plate insulation - sheathing of the ceiling with timber, installation of basalt wool in the cells of the frame, cladding with panels, clapboard.

Ordering balconies and loggias Full construction ”, the owner often does not take into account the presence of a step at the entrance to the loggia. When choosing a tiled floor, the thickness of the cladding, together with a layer of stone wool, does not allow leveling the level of the finished floor with the threshold, which leads to the inconvenience of stepping over.

Underfloor heating on wooden logs can be raised to any level at minimal cost. The lags are fixed to the bottom plate with standard anchors, which ensure the stability of the geometry of the elements in case of possible drying out. To do this, the fastening step should not exceed 40 cm. When choosing the section of the upper row of timber, it is enough to take into account the thickness of the cladding, the subfloor, in order to align the floor with the height of the entrance step.

Floors on wooden logs will have a maximum resource if the installation technology is observed:

    alignment of the log, the upper beam is made with plastic wedges, which, after fixing the beam to the slab, are filled with mounting foam;

    filling the space between the timber with insulation should occur without compacting stone wool;

    basalt insulation does not burn, unlike extruded polystyrene foam, there is no shrinkage, coloring.

Aluminum glazing of balconies and loggias is an budget repair option. The metal profile practically does not hide the internal space of the valves, unlike the wider plastic

Finishing interior walls

Aluminum balconies and loggias in 90% of cases are cold rooms for seasonal operation. To ensure minimal heat loss with solid glazing, warm aluminum profile, inside which is installed thermal bridge.

Finishing consists in installing panels, lining, block house, other claddings on a previously mounted frame. Before sheathing the planes, the operability of the electrical wiring is checked. In places of fastening of sockets, switches, accessories, under the cladding is mounted additional bar for screwing screws. The interfaces of the planes are additionally decorated with skirting boards, polystyrene foam fillets, PVC corners.

Glazing of balconies and loggias with aluminum profiles, as well as with PVC structures, should be trusted to professionals. When doing work on your own, there are often errors, the main of which are:

    displacement of the thermal contour of the building - at the lower, upper neighbors, the windows will start to fog up;

    insufficient tightness - high heat losses, wasted money;

    decrease in resource durability - after a few years of operation, it will need to be replaced.

Professionals install wedges exclusively for vertical mullions(racks of window blocks), use professional mounting foam, which costs more, has a lower yield of product. The gaps are filled in several visits., which provides the same structure throughout the thickness of the building envelope.

From the author: hello, dear visitors of our building portal. In recent years, it is rare to find a balcony without glazing. And no wonder, because people are increasingly beginning to invest in the arrangement of their homes.

A loggia is the same part of an apartment as, for example, a room or a kitchen. Yes, there are fewer square meters, and on some balconies it’s not really possible to turn around at all. But still, from any, even the smallest room, you can make a cozy beautiful corner.

It doesn't matter for what purpose - you can go there yourself in the morning to drink a cup of coffee, or admire the sunset in the evenings, or just put your favorite cactus there, surrounding it with care. In any case, this is part of your world, and therefore you need to treat it with the same care as all other rooms in the house.

That is why many now do not spare time and money for the improvement of balconies. The owners are investing in insulation, and in the installation, and in beautiful sheathing, and even in lamps. But the most important thing that is usually done first is glazing.

Of course, this procedure must be approached as responsibly as possible. If, for example, you make a mistake with the choice of skin, then it is quite simple to change it later. But windows are labor-intensive and costly. Therefore, today we will talk about how to choose a profile for glazing a loggia or balcony. Let's discuss what varieties exist, what are their features and disadvantages, and how easy it is to install each type.

I recommend stocking up with a notebook and a pen, as there will be quite a lot of information. For example, you can write out for yourself the names of specific companies or the necessary characteristics of a particular profile. Then, when you come to the store, you will be able to focus on your notes, and not just on the words of sales assistants, who do not always really understand the issue. So let's get started.

wooden profile

Previously, this option was the most popular. The tree is eco-friendly, looks very beautiful in almost any environment and, moreover, is available everywhere. Moreover, you can choose it in accordance with any volume of the wallet: there are both ordinary economy options (for example, pine profiles) and frames made of elite wood species.

Previously, all wooden profiles were similar to each other in color, shape, and possible glazing method. As a rule, these were rectangular frames into which one ordinary glass was inserted. It did not play a role at all in terms of keeping warm, since the temperature inside the room differed from the street temperature by about five degrees.

Therefore, earlier such glazing was installed exclusively for two needs: an aesthetic appearance and the exclusion of rainfall on the balcony. Now modern technology allows you to look at this matter in a new way. Wooden structures are no longer limited in shape, they are made both triangular and round - in general, everything is at the request of the customer.

In addition, many of them are now adapted for the insertion of double-glazed windows. As a result, if such glazing is done correctly and no expense is spared, it will give the loggia both warmth and beauty.

But there are also significant downsides to this option. And, first of all, it is weight. The mass of the tree is quite large, given the amount of installation. From this follows two points:

  • it is difficult to install a wooden profile on your own, for this you will definitely need helpers, or better, a specialized team;
  • not every balcony slab can withstand a significantly increased load. If you live in an old house, then most likely the retaining reinforcement has rusted and deformed, and the concrete has cracked and begun to crumble. If a heavy wooden structure is hoisted on such initial data, then the result can be very deplorable. Therefore, we recommend that you first carefully check the condition of your balcony: remove the floor finish, assess the condition of the slab and fittings. If everything is in order, then you can think about a wooden profile. If the condition is “C grade”, and the design with wood is important for you, then you will first have to carry out restoration work: weld and install an additional reinforcing cage, patch up the concrete slab with the help of special compounds. Only after that it will be possible to proceed with the installation procedure.

But the shortcomings do not end there. True, everything else can be compensated somewhat. I'll explain in more detail. Look, the loggia or balcony with its outer part (that is, the one that we will glaze) is facing the external environment. Any atmospheric phenomenon, whether it be snow, hail, rain, severe frosts or direct sunlight, with all its power, constantly affects the profile.

That is, the material must be resistant to all these phenomena. Moisture resistance is especially important, since water is the main destroyer of almost any structure. So, wood does not have such stability. But there is a susceptibility to damage by various insects, woodworm bugs. And the tree is on fire, that is, a fire hazard is added.

This means that if you use wood in its original form, then it will last, to put it mildly, not for long. Of course, there are special means to prevent such a development of events. These are various preparations for impregnating wood, which give both water resistance and fire-fighting characteristics, as well as protect against insects.

The finish also plays an important role. It can be wood varnish or paint. The coating, firstly, will give a beautiful appearance to the structure, either emphasizing its natural pattern, or giving the desired shade. Secondly, it will be an additional barrier between wood and external influences.

Of course, nothing lasts forever, so periodically it is necessary to remove the old coating, re-treat with all the necessary preparations, and then paint or varnish again. All this is quite laborious. That is why the wooden profile is now installed only by those who are fundamentally important to use this particular material.

We will not dwell on its installation, because - we repeat once again - the best option would be to hire a specialized team. We do not recommend taking risks by doing the installation yourself. After all, if you drop at least one frame, this is fraught not only with its breakdown, but also with your physical injuries. And if she falls from the balcony outside, then we will talk about the lives of other people. In general, it is better to spend money than to expose everyone around you and yourself to such a risk.

Aluminum profile

Aluminum frames can be used for so-called "cold glazing". That is, in cases where frost protection is not needed. If you are planning, then this option, unfortunately, will not work for you. But for regions with a year-round mild climate, this is what you need.

The aluminum profile has many advantages:

  • light weight. Aluminum is a light metal, therefore, products made from it do not differ in excessively large mass. Why is it good? Firstly, structural elements are easily transported and transported from place to place. They are also installed without problems, even one adult, in principle, can lift them. Secondly, such frames do not carry additional load on the concrete slab and reinforcement. Even if your balcony is a long-liver, and its condition, to put it mildly, is not ideal, it will survive the installation and further operation of the aluminum profile. In addition, due to the same low weight, it is possible to make the structure protrude slightly beyond the level of the fence. This is very convenient if the balcony is very small, and you want to get a little more extra space. The glazed structure is slightly extended outside, and a wide window sill can be installed between it and the parapet;
  • rust resistance. Frames do not require additional processing, since they are not afraid of corrosion;
  • resistance to mechanical stress. Although lightweight, aluminum is quite durable. In addition, the frames are designed in such a way that there is literally nothing to break in them, because the construction is nowhere simpler;
  • one more advantage smoothly follows from the two previous points - durability. The aluminum profile does not rust, does not break, the double-glazed windows in it also withstand any gusts of wind, so the service life of the structure is at least 10 years;
  • sliding doors. As a rule, the aluminum profile has just such a mechanism for opening the sashes. This is convenient for two reasons. Firstly, open doors are more susceptible to mechanical damage. Secondly, on a small balcony every centimeter of space is important, and sliding windows do not take it at all;
  • simple care. The design does not require any tricky procedures using expensive detergents. It will be enough to occasionally wipe it using a piece of soft cloth and ordinary soap;
  • price. When compared with wooden and plastic options, aluminum is the undisputed leader in terms of savings.

Such an impressive list of advantages has only three disadvantages. The first is, of course, the same high thermal conductivity that we talked about above. A warm balcony with such a profile cannot be made; the temperature on it will not differ at all from the street temperature.

The second disadvantage is poor sound insulation. That is, you definitely won’t protect yourself from street sounds, perhaps just a little. The third disadvantage belongs to the category of aesthetic. Aluminum itself looks rustic. However, it fits perfectly into many design solutions.

Since we are talking about design, I will tell you a little more, since we usually pay no less attention to the aesthetic part of the situation than to the practical one. Thanks to modern technology, you can order frames of any shape, from round to polygonal and intricately curved. The glasses inserted into them can be ordinary transparent or tinted, which gives both practical benefits and an interesting visual effect.

The frames themselves can be of any shade. This is also done according to individual wishes with the help of spray paint. You can, for example, make them from the outside to match the color of the wall of your house, and from the inside - to match the decoration of the room. In general, if you do not limit the flight of fancy, then the result can be very interesting and harmonious.

Installation of an aluminum profile

We figured out the advantages and disadvantages, now let's see how the installation is done in order to know what to prepare for. You will need:

  • the structure itself, consisting of a frame, a window sill, sashes, an ebb and a visor;
  • galvanized steel - several sheets;
  • to fix the elements, self-tapping screws, dowels, anchors, bolts and rivets are needed;
  • silicone sealant;
  • mounting foam;
  • additional fittings (if required) - these can be rollers, any latches, clips, etc.

The entire kit (except for sealants) usually comes with the design. But the missing parts can be purchased separately.

Before proceeding with the installation, it is necessary to prepare a loggia. If it has old glazing, it must be completely dismantled. Wooden frames break and clean up quite easily. But you will have to tinker with the metal ones: saw it with a grinder and pull out the wedges from the walls, with the help of which the structure was fixed.

This is a rather laborious process, but it is quite possible to cope with it. At the end of the preparation, we collect all the garbage formed on the balcony and take it out. We also clean balcony railings and walls. And, finally, we proceed to the installation.

  1. If there are metal handrails on the balcony railing, then it is necessary to close them with an “apron” made of galvanized metal. In the absence of handrails, this is not necessary, the aluminum structure will be fixed directly to the parapet made of concrete or brick.
  2. The second step is to install the visor. In principle, given the water resistance of aluminum, you can do without this element, because the ingress of water in this case is not critical. But, on the other hand, the visor will protect the outer part of the windows from dirt and dust. Therefore, it is better to spend some amount of effort on this. Please note that the lengths of the balcony and the visor must be equal.
  3. We fix anchor plates on the parapet and on the upper part of the window opening. To do this, use the special bolts that came with them in the kit. In general, some craftsmen believe that mounting foam is enough to fix the frame, and do not bother with bolts. But we do not recommend following their example. Of course, it is easier to work with foam, but the result will be less strong and stable. Saving a little effort and time now, you risk getting the need for a new installation of the entire structure in the future. And it’s good if no one gets hurt when the old one falls off. In general, do not be lazy and use anchor plates.
  4. When all the fasteners have taken their place, we mount the frame itself.
  5. Then we install window sashes. If they are sliding, then first we fix the skids on the frame, and then we put the windows themselves on them. If hinged, then special hinges must be pre-mounted on the frame, on which the sashes must be hung.
  6. Next, we seal all joints and gaps between the structure and the edges of the window opening. This is done using mounting foam. There are special nozzles for a cylinder with it, allowing you to penetrate even the smallest cracks. Use this tool to get the best seal. If you leave at least the slightest hole, then both precipitation and cold wind will enter the balcony through it. When carrying out work, remember that the mounting foam increases at least twice as it hardens, so fill the necessary places not completely, but about half. When the foam has hardened, cut off the protruding excess with a sharp knife.
  7. The last point of installation is the adjustment of fittings. Check how each window opens. The sash should move smoothly, without requiring any effort from you. If something does not suit you, then pay attention to the special adjusting bolts. They should be unscrewed, install the window sash more correctly, tighten the bolt back and check the operation again. And so it is necessary to do until the desired result is achieved.

This completes the installation. As you can see, there is nothing particularly complicated here. And now let's move on to the next type of windows, so that there is something to compare with.

PVC profile

To date, plastic windows are the most popular option. First of all, because the double-glazed windows used in them can have two, three or more chambers. This factor is very important for keeping the heat on the balcony.

In addition to high-quality thermal insulation, PVC profiles have a number of other advantages. They protect well from street noise, even annoying car alarms are almost inaudible through them, which is especially important at night.

Such windows are not exposed to moisture, direct sunlight and temperature changes. They are undemanding to care, just wiping with a normal damp cloth is enough. In addition, the profile will look great in any design: sashes can be fully or partially opening, blind, white or multi-colored, arranged vertically or horizontally.

You can make the whole structure the same, you can combine different types of window sashes - in general, as they say, any whim for your money. By the way, from the material side, everything is also good here, the cost is quite acceptable. There are both economical and more expensive options, so you can choose according to your budget.

And now let's talk about the cons, in the name of the objectivity of the picture. There are several of them:

  • electrostaticity;
  • the possibility of excessive sealing, which causes stagnation of air and the formation of condensate;
  • a rather large width of the frames automatically reduces the area of the double-glazed window itself;
  • plastic is less durable than aluminium.

This is where the cons end. For me personally, the advantages of PVC windows far outweigh the disadvantages, so I usually advise you to focus on them. Especially if your region is characterized by cold winters, and you want to make a warm cozy room out of the loggia, and not just a room protected from the wind. But it's up to you, look at your wallet and desires.

Making a choice

Plastic windows are presented in a very wide range, so making a choice is not so easy. Let's take a look at the points, what varieties exist, and what are the differences between them.

First of all, it is worth mentioning the way the sash opens. It can be swivel, tilt-and-turn, folding and sliding. From the names it is clear how each of them works. In addition, there are deaf doors, that is, not opening at all. Usually the design combines deaf and opening in some way.

Sliding ones are not very popular. In general, they are convenient, especially in terms of saving space. But the mechanism of such sashes often quickly fails, so initially you need to select very high-quality fittings, sparing no expense for it.

Glazing is also divided into "warm" and "cold". We have already talked about cold in the section about aluminum profiles. In such constructions, a single double-glazed window is placed, which, of course, is not able to save heat in the room. Therefore, this option is only suitable if not.

And for those who want to qualitatively protect their home from frost, or even make another room out of the balcony, you need to choose a double-glazed window with several cameras. It includes not only 2-3 glasses (sometimes 5), but also an aluminum perforated frame, as well as insulation with a long shelf life. These elements absorb residual moisture and give the double-glazed window additional water resistance.

But in such windows, not only glass plays an important role. It is necessary to choose good, high-quality fittings: adjusting mechanisms, brackets, hinges, handles and the like. Poorly made parts will quickly fail, thereby nullifying all your efforts to install glazing.

Therefore, you should pay attention to the quality of fittings, and the reputation of the manufacturer. Let's list some of them that have performed particularly well in the market:

  • Winkhaus - firstly, produces special electronic devices that allow you to control the opening and closing of transoms remotely, which is very convenient. Secondly, from this manufacturer, the fittings necessary for multi-stage ventilation are presented on the market;
  • Siegenia-Aubi - specializes in details for non-standard window profiles;
  • Roto - produces many types of fittings, including the one that is necessary for various ways of opening windows;
  • Gretsch-Unitas, commonly referred to as G-U, specializes in intrusion protection. Accessories from this manufacturer are highly reliable. Windows can be opened both in the usual mechanical way and with the help of a control panel;
  • Maco - this company also specializes in the production of remotes. The peculiarity is that the remote window opening system can be used as an alarm.

Of course, the cost of products from these companies is not the lowest. But think: either you will spend money on fittings once, or you will constantly lay out small sums to repair or replace low-quality parts, and even get an endless headache about all the repetitive repairs. In general, not every saving truly saves money.

Since we are talking about manufacturers, let's talk about those who directly supply PVC windows to the market. Here the geographic spread is slightly wider:

  • REHAU is the most proven German manufacturer. Its products are reliable, have excellent performance and beautiful design;
  • KBE, Germany - specializes in windows that are suitable for regions with harsh climates. Double-glazed windows perfectly tolerate the effects of any atmospheric phenomena;
  • ALUPLAST, Germany - have high soundproofing and heat-insulating characteristics. Are issued with protection against illegal penetration. Their feature is that any shade of frames you choose will not change throughout the life of these windows;
  • VEKA, Germany - like REHAU, has high technical characteristics of products;
  • Salamander Industrie-Produkte GmbH, Germany - very high quality window profiles and improved technical characteristics of all elements;
  • PROPLEX, Austria - the products of this company are distinguished by very high quality thermal insulation, therefore they are suitable for use in very cold regions;
  • MONTBLANC, UK - these windows have become popular due to their durability, they can serve unquestioningly for more than half a century;
  • EXPROF, Russia - the manufacturer relies on the realities of his country, so the windows are highly resistant to severe frosts;
  • Laoumann, Russia - here the technologies of Austrian manufacturers are taken as a basis. The range of prices and quality levels is very large: there are economy class windows, and there are elite ones.

What to look for when buying

We have sorted out the manufacturers of windows and fittings, now you can go to the store. Let's list some points that you should pay special attention to when choosing a window profile and double-glazed windows:

  • damage to the finished product. Moreover, if you see those, then you should choose not only another window, but also another ruler. I'll explain why. Usually, only initially low-quality plastic is easily damaged. And since the entire line is made of this material, other windows will not be better. Even if there is no damage on them now, a single example will suffice. Of course, you can buy cheap (and such products usually belong to the economy class), but it is likely that something will break within the first year. In addition, low-quality plastic often releases substances into the air that are hazardous to human health. Consider whether such a risk is worth the small cost savings;
  • as a material for the manufacture of profiles, galvanized steel is considered optimal, since it is not subject to corrosion;
  • fittings, of course, should be chosen metal, not plastic;
  • if the winters in your region are excessively frosty, then purchase double-glazed windows coated with silver ions. It reflects heat, preventing it from escaping into the street;
  • glass can be both ordinary and tinted. If direct sunlight or unceremonious neighborly looks interfere with you, then tinting will save you a lot of nerve cells;
  • when choosing the size of the blind sashes, remember that they will subsequently have to be washed somehow. Therefore, do not make them too large, leave yourself the opportunity to reach every corner from the outside of the window without risking your life;
  • think about safety, especially if your home is not too high above the ground. Special fittings with the function of protection against illegal entry will help you solve this problem;
  • Another useful element is the locking mechanism for window handles. If you have kids in the house, then remember that children have an extremely high level of curiosity. For all the apparent helplessness, a child who has barely learned to walk is able to climb onto the windowsill faster than lightning. How they do it is a mystery that no scientist will ever solve. So, having climbed onto the window, your child will definitely be interested in the pen. Therefore, it is imperative to prevent the possibility of its rotation. This is done using a special lock that can be locked with a key. Do not be stingy with this device, because the safety of children is above all;
  • and the last - as mentioned above, due to too high-quality sealing of the balcony, a violation of natural air exchange is possible. Because of this, condensation may appear on windows and walls, and the air in such a room will be stale and unpleasant. To avoid this effect, purchase and install a special supply valve. A stream of air will pass through it, while this will not affect the temperature in the room.

That's all you should pay attention to when buying. Now let's briefly go over the installation procedure.

Installation of the PFH profile

As in the case of an aluminum profile, you first need to dismantle the old glazing, if any. Then clean the window opening of all latches, wedges, debris and the like. Immediately take out the dismantled frames from the balcony so that they do not interfere under your feet. Agree that with a double-glazed window in your hands it is better not to stumble over anything.

Do not forget to evaluate the condition of the balcony railing. It is possible that restoration work will need to be carried out, especially if the house was built many decades ago. You can only on a strong fence!

When everything is ready, install the visor. This is done with anchor bolts, cement and a welding machine. The visor will help protect the frames from the outside from precipitation and, therefore, from the adherence of dirt and dust.

  1. We lay all sides of the window opening from the inside with a diffuse tape. This procedure is necessary both to increase the moisture resistance of the structure, and to increase the service life of the mounting foam, with which we will subsequently close the gaps.
  2. We install the PVC profile in the window opening, inserting gaskets around the perimeter. Then level it up.
  3. We fix the top and sides of the profile in the opening with dowels and self-tapping screws, the bottom - with anchor bolts. Again we use the building level and check if our structure has shifted. If yes, then fix it.
  4. On the outside of the balcony railing, we mount a drain under the window opening.
  5. We fill all the gaps between the profile and the opening with mounting foam and wait for it to harden. Remember that this sealant swells a lot, so bring it into the gap by about half.
  6. Cut off excess foam with a sharp knife.
  7. We mount window sashes in the profile, then double-glazed windows. Finally, we install a window sill from below.
  8. Lastly, we put fittings and mosquito nets. We check how everything works, if necessary, fix it.

All these procedures can be done alone. But some are very difficult, so it’s better to take care of having an assistant in advance. It is also necessary to choose the right weather conditions - the air temperature when installing windows should not be lower than -5 degrees.

That's all, dear friends. Now you know about the properties of all types of window profiles, about the installation features of each of them, about the advantages and disadvantages. So, you can make an objective and correct choice.

If you need more detailed information on installation, we recommend that you study our building portal. There are a lot of articles here that maximally reveal the topic you need. In conclusion, we advise you to watch the video, the link to which is located below. It will help you consolidate information. Good luck with your choice and easy installation!

A glazed balcony or loggia is a good addition to the functionally useful area of the apartment. For these purposes, a double-glazed window should be chosen based on the design features of the building and your preferences.

Globally can be divided into:

  • warm;
  • cold.

If you plan to install underfloor heating, radiators or otherwise heat the room, warm double-glazed windows will provide comfort inside. Such balconies perfectly turn into a part of the interior, a greenhouse, a place for tea drinking and relaxation.

The function of cold glazing is to protect the space from rain, dust and wind. But the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor air will not exceed 5°C. This technology will provide comfortable operation in limited periods. You can use the balcony space to store things that are not critical to temperature fluctuations.

Profiles for cold glazing

In this case, a basic three-chamber profile is used with a single glass unit, for example, Salamander or Openteck, or even one glass.

Such windows have a minimum specific weight and are the best option for balconies with a large glazing perimeter. One square meter of a window with a 3-chamber profile and a single glass pane weighs approximately 25 kg, and with two air gaps between the panes it weighs already 35 kg.

If the carrier plate is designed for a maximum load of up to 500 kg / m2, you should choose the lightest windows and refuse to insulate the balcony.

Profiles for warm glazing

In modern new buildings there are no restrictions on the weight of window structures. The choice depends on your preferences and planned budget.

High-quality 60 mm profiles with four, five chambers and installed double energy-saving double-glazed windows 32 mm wide will provide reliable thermal insulation and protection from extraneous sounds from the street.

Such balconies are equipped with heating systems and turn into a continuation of your apartment.

Advantages of glazing balconies using a metal-plastic profile

For these purposes, wooden or aluminum frames are often used. In comparison with them, metal-plastic wins in many positions:

  • it is not subject to rotting and corrosion;
  • do not require complex preventive maintenance - it is enough to wash it 2 times a year with a non-abrasive soapy solution, clean and lubricate the fittings;
  • retains its shape at extremely low or high ambient temperatures of ±50°C;
  • suitable for operation in any climatic conditions;
  • remains snow-white during the entire period of operation;
  • can be laminated in a wide range of colors and ornaments that imitate the pattern of natural wood;
  • fits perfectly into any interior;
  • the service life is 50 years.

And in order for the updated balcony to fully meet your expectations, order the manufacture and installation of window structures from trusted manufacturers who strictly adhere to the technical specifications and give a reasonable guarantee for their products.
