Bay windows are an element of the Gothic style, but today they are increasingly decorating not only cottages and country houses with original architecture, but also modern new buildings. Bay windows are angular, rounded or semicircular, they protrude in front of the plane of the wall, window sashes can follow the curves of the building. Thanks to this design feature, houses with bay windows look very original and architecturally interesting, and the room gets more interior space and light.

In Russia, only a very few companies produce PVC bay windows. This fact can be explained by the fact that their production requires high costs and the use of manual labor, although the demand for bay windows is growing every year.

What are pvc bay windows

A PVC bay window is a window structure made of several plastic windows interconnected by a special bay window at an angle of 90 to 180 degrees. Modern bay windows are made not only from a white PVC profile, it is possible to use profiles of different shades, for which all connecting elements are also matched to the color of the frames. When thinking through the design of bay windows, you can widely use decorative elements, even decorate stained-glass windows or create false covers. Such decorative overlays give the design elegance and a certain style. When creating a unique interior of a country house or cottage, any bold design will be complemented by blinds for bay windows.

Design features of bay windows for warm and cold rooms

Standard bay connectors are usually made for three-chamber profile systems, the thickness of the bay window profile may not be enough to protect your home from the cold. In the corner joints of PVC bay windows, under the influence of cold air, the dew point shifts to the inside of the window, which can lead to condensation, and in severe frosts to the formation of frost. When glazing residential, warm balconies and loggias with PVC bay windows, Master City recommends choosing modern five- or six-chamber systems, whose massive bay windows can easily repel cold attacks. Due to the thickening of the bay window connector, the dew point will be located inside the window structure, so neither condensation nor glaciation will appear on the inner surface of the glass in your house.

If you plan to install bay windows in a cold room, then a three-chamber profile system will be enough. To avoid condensation, it will be enough to regularly ventilate the balcony.

Features of measurements of bay windows

Measurements of PVC bay windows can only be carried out by qualified measurers with extensive experience. Bay window angles are measured with a goniometer. There are bay profiles for fixed angles and adjustable ones, in which it is possible to change the angle of connection of sections. In profile systems from different manufacturers there are corresponding connectors for angles of 90, 120, 135 and 150 degrees. If such corner connectors are not provided for in a specific profile system, or the corners of the bay window sections differ from the standard ones by at least 1-2 degrees, the bay window is connected using a tubular connection.

When measuring bay windows or loggias, it is very important to mark the installation area with a marker, indicate the direction of installation.

When determining the length of the elements of PVC bay window blocks, measurements are carried out both along the upper and lower parts of the window opening, using safety equipment.

Features of installation of bay windows

When glazing cottages with bay windows, it is necessary to ensure their reliable fastening, because these structures are quite bulky and massive. For high-quality installation, additional profiles with a seal, a reinforcing steel profile, are required. To avoid the penetration of moisture, cold air, freezing of windows, it is very important to make high-quality waterproofing of the joints between the frames and the supporting bay window profile, window joints. Particular attention should be paid to the joints of the window sills; with a qualified installation, gaps or drops should not appear here. In addition to the exact fitting of the window sill and the sills on the PVC bay window, it is necessary to dock the plastic slopes in such a way that the mounting seams are invisible. Properly installed slopes create the impression of a complete window opening, and a bay window looks great in any interior.

Window sills and drainage systems are an important component of any facade, they have a practical and decorative function, reliably protecting the building structure from moisture. Traditionally, these elements were made of iron, but today there is a wide range of products in various materials on the market. This allows you to buy a window sill that perfectly matches the facade of a certain type. One of the most popular building cladding materials is clinker brick. It attracts consumers with its aesthetic perfection, durability and ability to withstand any atmospheric phenomena. Elegant clinker window sills are the perfect addition to a perfect façade.

Production and features of window casting elements

The material from which the window tide is made is high-quality clay of plastic grades. It is carefully crushed, sifted, and then molded into blanks with a rather complex geometry. After that, the ebb elements are sent to the kiln, where they are fired at a high temperature. After sintering of clay particles, clinker is formed - a material equal in strength to stone. The ebbs for windows created from it are not afraid of water, machine oil, gasoline, they withstand severe frosts and heat, and solar ultraviolet does not have any effect on them.

One of the advantages of the piecewise construction of clinker window sills is the presence of drainage channels. This allows you to quickly and efficiently drain water, and the absence of stagnant small puddles minimizes the possibility of fungus formation. The presence of the final side elements reliably protects the wall from moisture and makes the window sill aesthetically perfect.

Variety of clinker window sills

Today you can buy a window tide with a thickness of 30 and 35 mm, an element width of 105 mm, its length is 160 and 215 mm. It is not difficult to assemble a window sill from the components yourself, if you wish, you can purchase an assembled window sill of a certain length. It is fixed to the facade of the building with the help of special mounting clips.

The aesthetic variety of clinker window sills is impressive: a wide choice of colors, matt and glossy surfaces. Ebbs can be used to decorate window openings, balconies, thresholds, decorative elements of the facade or fence. They look harmoniously with the facades of clinker and ceramic bricks, giving the house a finished and elegant look.

Oddly enough, even those who know how to do it ask this question. Paradox. Is not it? The fact is that there is no generally accepted rule explaining how to connect the ebbs at the corners. And therefore, every specialist is interested in how other masters do it.

There are two ways I've heard of but never used:

  • Soldering. I don't even know how to do it.
  • Lock. This method was very popular in Soviet times on galvanized metal roofs.
  1. Connection of ebbs at an angle of 90 degrees (in this article).
  2. Connection of ebbs at an angle of more than 90 degrees. Bay window connection of ebbs.
  3. Direct connection of ebbs. No corners.

Well, let's take a closer look at the first method.

How to connect ebbs at an angle of 90 degrees?

In general, it should be noted that this article refers primarily to the connection of low tides on loggias and balconies. Moreover, as you know, the upper ebbs differ from the lower ones in configuration. There is already an article on this subject.

Let's start, as is customary with tools, fasteners and other consumables. In order to connect the ebbs, you need to have in your arsenal:

  • Metal shears
  • Pliers
  • Elbow 90 degrees
  • Goniometer
  • Pencil
  • Hand riveter
  • Aluminum rivets 3.2 x 10 (matching the color of the tides)
  • screwdriver
  • Screws (bugs or 4.2 x 25 with a drill)
  • Sealant in the color of the tides (usually white)
  • Foam gun
  • Roulette
  • Some auxiliary hand tools (knife, hammer and so on)

It seems such a simple matter, but how many tools and supplies are required. Well, however, the window installer has a much larger list.

By the way, now I am creating my first free video course, specifically on the topic “Tools and building materials for installing PVC windows”. So be the first to know.

How to connect ebbs?

Well, let's take as an example a standard U-shaped balcony 3 meters long and having an offset of 0.9 meters. It has two 90 degree angles.

How to connect the ebbs at the corners? We will assume that the width of the tides is 100 mm. Take for example the left corner (we look at the corner from the side of the room). I always say, - If the work goes from left to right - this is in Russian. And when on the contrary - in Chinese))), although of course it is necessary to act according to the situation.

1. We put a label. We take a short left ebb and apply it in place to the frame so that its left edge is pressed against the wall. We make a mark with a pencil at the place of the future junction of the ebb. If ours, then the label will coincide with the corner of the window construction.

If under the frame, that is, in the stand profile, then the mark will be shorter by 10 - 15 mm.

2. Next, we make the markup. Since the angle of our window structure is 90 degrees, it would seem that the angle of the cut line should be 135 degrees. And this value would be correct if the angle of inclination of the ebb was 90 degrees.

But, because the slope for the ebb is necessary, and has different values \u200b\u200bfrom 100 to 150 degrees depending on the opening, respectively, and the angle of the cut line will be different from 125 to 135 degrees.

There is a table of the ratio of the angles of inclination of the ebb and the angles of the cut line of the ebb, though only for the most common size of the ebb with a width of 100 mm. Also, the table shows the values \u200b\u200bwith which you can make more accurate markings without using a goniometer.

- or a goniometer from the already set mark to the outer edge of the ebb

- or with a tape measure, first setting aside the linear size from the table from the already set mark along the length of the ebb, and then drawing a perpendicular to the edge of the ebb in width. After that, you can connect the received labels. This markup will be more accurate.

In order not to be mistaken in which direction to draw the cutting line (I have happened more than once due to inexperience), you need to remember, that the cut line is always drawn diagonally from the original mark towards the cut.

3. We cut off the ebb according to the markup. I know that many installers cut the ebbs with a grinder.

But, firstly, this is wrong, because most of the ebbs are galvanized. When working with a grinder, galvanization heats up and loses its corrosive properties at the cut point.

Well, and secondly, why work as a noisy grinder, if you can quietly cut off with scissors. By the way, I recommend. These scissors make a beautiful and neat cut, and it is very comfortable to work. In St. Petersburg, you can buy in a chain of stores - "Stroitel".

Important. Always mark the line so that when cutting, there is a low tide on the left side of the scissors, and a cut on the right. That is, the markup is done either on the front side or on the inside.(In this case, the cut line made with scissors will be more accurate). By the way, the upper ebb of a complex configuration can also be cut off with metal scissors.

4. How to connect the tide? Further, in order for our ebb connection to be correct, we must rivet it. The size of the drill diameter is 3.3 mm. Aluminum rivet - white or according to the color of the tides - 3.2 x 10 mm.

To do this, when marking on one of the ebbs involved in the connection, an overlap is provided, which is slightly bent down. And on the second, a clean cut is made. Moreover, the overlap is hidden under a clean cut.

This joint is riveted and a beautiful joint is obtained, which is desirable to seal on the lower ebb. The top connection is sealed according to the situation, if necessary.

Do not forget that the level of low tides should match the level of windows, at least visually. It is clear that the installers put the windows on the level, and the ebbs often do not work out. And when you approach the window on the balcony and visually see that the horizontal line of windows does not coincide with the line of low tides, you understand that this is a “jamb”. Most clients, of course, don't care, but out of a hundred clients, one will meet and it will have to be redone. Well, the main thing is probably all the same

It is important to understand. That it is not always possible to connect the ebbs beautifully. The reason for this is the rush. Therefore, the most reliable way is to cut off the ebbs with an allowance. Then try on and only then trim completely. Although high-quality sealant always saves))).

Well, how to connect the ebbs at 90 degree angles, I hope it's clear. What is not clear, ask in the comments. In the near future, an article will be published on how to connect ebbs at bay corners. and be the first to know about new articles.

Thank you for your attention. Check out the blog. Sincerely,
