The territory of Russia is huge, so it is not surprising that dozens of waterfalls are scattered on it, in its most diverse corners. Some of them remain nameless, although they are not inferior in height to the famous waterfalls of the world.

1. Talnikovy waterfall, Putorana plateau (about 700 m)

Few can see the largest waterfall in Russia, as it is very difficult to get to it. It is surprising that such a high waterfall is not located in the big mountains, but on the Central Siberian Plateau, in the region of the Putorana Plateau. It is fed by Lake Dyupkun, located between the mouths of the 1st and 2nd Gagarih rivers in the Putoransky Reserve. But this waterfall operates only a couple of months a year, falling into the lake, the edge of which rises 109 meters above sea level.
The stream falls vertically from the flat-topped table mountain Trapeze with a large number of cascades. Reputable publications of previous years, for example, the Soviet Encyclopedic or Geographical Dictionary, did not take into account this temporary waterfall at all. By the way, its full height is still not clear, there are only very different visual estimates, giving both 600 and 700 meters.
With estimates of the height of this waterfall, there was a lot of confusion and confusion, to the point that the heights of completely different waterfalls in the same area were measured. It is known that two more full-flowing streams fall to the right and left of the Talnikovy waterfall, but they have a lower height. At the time of its existence, Talnikovy Falls could have attracted many tourists, however, it is very difficult to get into such a wilderness, where it is located, in our time. It is much easier to get there during the period when the waterfall almost completely dries up.

2. Zeygalan, North Ossetia (600 m)

In North Ossetia there is a valley of the Midagrabindon River, in the rocky gorges of which there is the pearl of the Caucasus - the Big Zeygalan waterfall. It is he who should be recognized as the highest waterfall in the country among those that operate constantly. It is also called the highest in Europe, although it would be more correct to call it the “highest”, because there are waterfalls with a large drop in water, but they are located below Zeygalan. Its source is a hanging glacier clinging to the rocks, and the total height of its cascades is sometimes even estimated at 650 meters.
The view of this waterfall is majestic: it is framed by rocks that once made up the walls of the vent of the volcano, seething water streams make their way through them, which rush down to the bottom of the gorge, where they merge into a single stream. During a long fall, the jets break up into myriads of spray, which are picked up and carried away by the wind. The powerful roar of the waterfall is heard for many kilometers, it seems to warn the traveler about the approach to the magnificent miracle. But, as for the dry figures of the height of the waterfall, here too there are large tolerances, since the height was determined only from the height data on the map.
Zeygalan waterfall is located high in the mountains and has an uneven flow, which is highly dependent on air temperature. Therefore, its maximum flow falls on the hottest summer months - July and August, while in the winter months the glacier stops melting (after all, it is at an altitude of 4 kilometers), then the waterfall completely changes its appearance - instead of powerful water jets, huge ice streaks appear . It is surprising that the mountainous regions of the Caucasus, studied along and across, have long been well developed, but many of its unique natural objects, such as the Zeygalan waterfall, have so far attracted insufficient attention from naturalists and researchers.

On our planet there are such areas where a person experiences special sensations: a surge of energy, euphoria, a desire to improve or spiritually...

3. Kinzelyuk waterfall, Sayany (328 m)

The Kinzelyuk waterfall is located in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, near the border with the Irkutsk Region, in the east of the Kuraginsky District. The Tofalaria region is a mountainous and inaccessible area of the northeastern spur of the Kinzelyuk Range, which is the extreme western section of the Eastern Sayan Mountains. This waterfall is one of the most striking sights of all the Sayan Mountains.
In the circus of Kinzelyukinsky peak at an altitude of 1601 meters there is a lake of the same name, from which the waterfall of the same name also feeds. It consists of several cascades, with a total height of 328 meters (measured with a theodolite in 1989), with 90 meters of free fall of water. The waterfall falls into the small Lower Kinzelyuk Lake, located at an altitude of 1144 meters, and the Kinzelyuk River, a tributary of the Kizir, begins from it.

4. Charaor, Eastern Caucasus (250 m)

The name of this waterfall is the same as that of the river that feeds it, flowing into Chekhychay, this is the basin of the Samur River, which flows in the Dokuzparinsky region near the border with Azerbaijan. This is the highest waterfall in Dagestan, first falling to 150 meters, and then another 100 meters in the next cascade. Near Charaur, another 40-meter waterfall beats from the rock. Having made several cascades along an almost sheer cliff, the river breaks into 2-3 rather wide streams. The fall of water begins at a height of 3350 meters, while 20 meters before the cliff, the water is hidden between the cracks, and then below the cliff level, the main waterfall is knocked out of the wall and less powerful.

5. Grandiose, Sayany (200 m)

This waterfall owes its loud name not to its incredible height or power, but to the Grandiose peak, from the western circus of which it flows. This peak is really impressive - with its 2922 meters it is the highest point of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. It is half a kilometer higher than the surrounding mountains. The waterfall itself has a height of 200 meters and a width of about a meter.

6. Fisht (Pshekh waterfall, Vodopadisty), Western Caucasus (200 m)

The Pshekhsky waterfall is located in Adygea, 5 kilometers from the Krasnodar Territory, in the western part of the Fisht-Oshtenovsky massif. For thousands of years, the top of Mount Fisht on the north side has been covered by the Big and Small glaciers. Below, approximately at an altitude of 2320 meters between the peaks of Pshekho-Su and Fisht, a couloir formed, in which ice pellets - firn accumulated. Hot sun rays make this snow-ice thickness actively melt and feed the Pshekhsky waterfall. It is as if divided into three small waterfalls, located next to each other. The highest jet descending along the ledges from a height of 200 meters is the visual boundary separating the Pshekho-Su and Fisht massifs.
This cascade is clearly visible from a great distance, when it is still impossible to assess its power. From a rocky crevice to his right, another stream beats, falling 165 meters. And if you move 50 meters towards the Maykop Pass, then a third stream will open up to your eyes, falling from the wall of Pshekho-Su by 160 meters. On cloudy days, when there is no rain, the strength of the Pshekh waterfall decreases somewhat, as the sun stops actively melting the snow. Now this waterfall has become very popular among tourists, and not only because of its beauty, but also because it is quite easy to get to it - exhausting transitions and overnight stays are not required. Such a route can be completed in one day, while very vivid impressions will remain in your memory for a long time.

7. Uchar, Altai (160 m)

Its name is translated from one of the local languages as "impregnable", and it is also called the Big Chulchinsky waterfall, since this cascading waterfall is located on the Altai Chulcha River, in the Ulagansky district. With a drop height of 160 meters, it is the largest waterfall in the entire area. According to various sources, the waterfall is located 7 or 11-12 kilometers from the confluence of the Chulcha into the Chulyshman River, here is the Altai State Reserve. The waterfall is the object of this reserve, which is open to tourists. Reserve inspectors take a small recreational fee for visiting it. The term "waterfall" is not entirely fair - because the water here is not in free fall, but rolls down a very steep ledge.

As long as humanity remembers its history, so many daredevils existed who were attracted by the majestic mountain peaks. Romance mountaineering creatures...

8. Kishtinsky waterfall, Sayans (150 m)

This waterfall is located on one of the right tributaries of the Bolshaya Kishta River, from here it is 5 kilometers to the Mongolian Pass, behind which is the Chatyg-Khem River. Even from a distance, it impresses with its 150-meter height. The stream that feeds it is only 1 meter wide, and it falls from a rocky ledge of a hard-to-reach circus. The stream did not form a canyon. On a hillock with a cedar pine near the mouth of the stream, you can stop for the night, from here you can see the waterfall itself and the upper reaches of the Bolshaya Kishta.

9. Ilya Muromets, Kuriles (141 m)

On the island of Iturup, which is part of the Kuril Islands, on the Bear Peninsula there is a waterfall with the loud name Ilya Muromets. It is located near the cape of the same name, on a stream that flows down the northeastern slope of Mount Demon, which ends with a steep cliff into the Pacific Ocean. The place where the waterfall is located is very inaccessible, so you can only admire the waterfall from the ocean.

10. Ashiltinsky, Dagestan (103 m)

You don’t need to climb steep mountain paths to this Dagestan waterfall, since it is located almost in the middle of the village of Ashilta, in the Untsukulsky district. The local rivulet Ashiltinka falls from more than 100 meters in five cascades, however, the waterfall is very weak - the water flow is only 4-5 l / s. But the waterfall is beautiful at any time of the year: under the summer sun, its jets shine like a rainbow over green gardens, and in winter, the steep walls of the rocks are decorated with icicles transparent as crystal. The waterfall has a great economic purpose - two pipes with drinking water and water for irrigation of local apricot orchards run from it to the village of Ashilta.

Attractive in their dangerous beauty, waterfalls have always attracted attention and excited the imagination of man.

It is especially fascinating to realize that over the largest and most powerful of the bottom, such as Niagara, Victoria or Iguazu, a person has absolutely no power. They show us the beauty and power of wildlife.

Geographic feature. The meaning of waterfalls

Powerful waterfalls are an almost inexhaustible source of energy, which is widely used in the construction of hydroelectric power plants. Staying near waterfalls brings not only aesthetic pleasure, but also has a healing effect: water falling from a height forms water dust, in which negatively charged ions are formed under the influence of sunlight. Such dust, saturated with plant phytoncides, which are always in abundance near waterfalls, has a very positive effect on the body.

However, there are also contacts with waterfalls that are unpleasant for humans. Waterfalls and rapids, which cannot be curbed, are a serious obstacle to navigation. Therefore, on many rivers where there are waterfalls, navigable channels are being laid, allowing liners and ships to make a safe journey.

Characteristics and types of waterfalls

The waterfall is a water stream falling from a steep cliff. Often large waterfalls consist of a chain of small rapids and cascades. One of the features of large waterfalls is their "movement": the constant fall of water leads to the destruction of the ledge and the movement of the waterfall up the river.

It is noteworthy that almost all the powerful waterfalls of the world are located on the border of two or three states. And this is understandable, because a large waterfall is a natural insurmountable barrier that protects the territory of the state much more reliably than the most modern instruments and weapons.

Types of waterfalls:

  • cataract- a large waterfall, in which the bulk of the water falls in a wide sheet from a relatively small height;
  • waterfall- smooth sloping waterfall without steep overthrows of water;
  • cascade- a series of waterfalls located one after another.

Origin of waterfalls

The origin of waterfalls is different. For example, they may appear due to the fact that the river crosses a natural ledge, which was formed even before the appearance of water. In another case, the appearance of a waterfall may be the result of the activity of the river itself, which erodes the soft layers of rocks.

In the mountains, a large number of waterfalls owe their appearance to tectonic activity. Also in the mountainous regions there are many waterfalls that have arisen in the hanging valleys due to an excess of water in the rivers that have come down from the glaciers.
