Terrace board made of polymer composite: composition, application, differences from wood, characteristics. WPC terrace board price Holzhof seamless board

Wanting to equip a country house and a plot adjacent to it, the owner of suburban real estate often thinks about the advantages of a particular building material. When choosing a floor covering, whether it is a polymer terrace board or ordinary wood, its performance properties should be taken into account. It is the technical characteristics of the flooring that determine the service life and appearance of the flooring.

Terrace flooring made of wood and polymers is successfully used for arranging a summer cottage. The coating is resistant to moisture, temperature extremes, exposure to the sun. A wide range of textures, colors facilitates the selection of a suitable composite board for the terrace

Appearance of a terrace from a polymer terrace board

Composite material combines the advantages of natural flooring and the absence of the disadvantages inherent in wood. WPC polymer deck board, unlike traditional wood decking:

  • Possesses greater durability, strength;
  • Does not require pre-impregnation with varnish or paint;
  • Does not need periodic updating of the coating, which saves time and money;
  • Fire resistant;
  • Withstands temperatures in the range from -50 to +80 degrees;
  • Does not deform from moisture and ultraviolet;
  • Has a wide color palette;
  • Has a rough non-slip surface;
  • It is not subject to the process of decay, mold formation.

Production and materials

What is a composite deck board made of? For the manufacture of the material, natural wood flour, polymer additives, color pigment, water are used. Components are connected to each other in a certain proportion. This results in a base with good characteristics.

Components of a polymer composite coating

The terrace board made of wood-polymer composite has two main layers - the substrate and the front side. Depending on how rigid the material needs to be, a different base is used. Wooden planks as a substrate give firmness. To obtain a softer floorboard, plastic gratings are used.

How to choose a board from WPC

When buying a wood-polymer decking board, you should pay attention to the cost. A lower price may indicate the presence of a marriage. The manufacturer could save on equipment, the quality of components, the thickness of the floorboards or walls. It happens that part of the costs is included in the cost of additional fasteners required for the installation of the coating.

Using a low quality pigment or UV stabilizer will cause the resin flooring to discolor quickly. Wanting to reduce the cost of the material, the manufacturer can use repeatedly recycled polymers. This solution leads to the formation of weak bonds within the panel. Low-quality composite deck boards can swell or crack after a couple of seasons of use.

Dimensions and weight

Terrace covering made of wood-polymer composite has a lighter weight compared to natural wood. The material is usually produced:

  • Length from 2 to 6 meters;
  • Width from 15 to 16.5 cm;
  • Thickness from 2.2 to 2.8 cm.

The choice of floorboard size depends on the size of the room. Long boards are most often used for flooring in spacious rooms, large terraces, and dance floors. In addition, the need for delivery should be taken into account. To transport material 6 meters long, special transport is needed. The width of the floorboard determines the number of boards required for laying the floor. The thickness of the flooring determines the installation step of the lag. The thinner the decking, the narrower the crate should be.

Polymer deck board

Appearance and colors

Wood-polymer decking is available in various colors and textures. A wide choice of exterior finishes allows you to find a material that can fit well into the exterior design of the whole house. If the desired shade is still missing, you can adjust the decking with a special tint.

Solid and hollow

Composite decking board is produced solid or with voids. In the first case, the material has a large weight. Full-bodied decking is more durable, stronger, and more expensive. When using this type, the step between the lags increases. Solid boards are used in floor installation in outdoor spaces exposed to weather conditions.

Flooring with voids inside is less durable, suitable for finishing a closed veranda. The material is lightweight and cheaper. At the same time, the terrace coating with voids has less strength. For this reason, during installation, the distance between the lags is reduced. Hollow polymer decking is easy to mount, allowing you to create various shapes. In the voids, you can hide the cable, build in floor lamps.

Terrace board mounting tools

To install a polymer composite coating, you will need tools and materials:

  • Lags;
  • Terrace coverage;
  • Staples (initial, intermediate);
  • Fasteners (screws, self-tapping screws);
  • Plugs with corners;
  • End finish;
  • Electric drill;
  • Drill set;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Roulette, level;
  • Pencil;
  • Saw.

Laying of material is made on a plain, pure, dry surface. The best option is a concrete platform with a thickness of 10 cm or more with a slope of 1-2 degrees. A slight drop, located along the length of the boards, is needed to drain water. Before starting the assembly of the structure, allow the material to acclimatize. To do this, you need to leave the decking at the installation site for two days, so that it gets used to the temperature and humidity level.

Installation of a terrace board is made on logs established in advance. Cross bars are laid on a concrete surface, fixed with anchors. The maximum step length is 40 cm. In places of increased load, the transverse bars are located at a distance of up to 25 cm. A compensation gap of 1-2 cm is needed between the wall and the lags.

Further, special clips intended for installation are attached to the lags with self-tapping screws. A polymer coating is installed in their groove bases. If a single floorboard is fixed on a surface larger than 80 cm, it requires at least 3 cross-beams. The end should not protrude beyond the transverse base by more than 5 cm. 1-2 cm should be left between the wall and the end of the board.

In open-air places, a separate gap for water flow is provided. In other cases, it is not required. A ventilation gap of up to 3 cm should be left under the floor surface. The resulting air exchange in space reduces the risk of fungus and mold development. In case of possible temperature differences, a small gap is also needed in case of floorboard expansion.

Example of deck board installation

When covering the terrace with long boards, both of their ends should rest on the logs, securely fixed with clips. Corner connection provides three ways of finishing:

  • End cap, giving harmony to the appearance of the material;
  • End plate to match the coating, fixed with self-tapping screws;
  • A polymeric corner resembling a plinth.

Upon completion of the installation of polymer terrace boards, dust and chips must be removed from the surface of the decking. The new floor should be wiped with a slightly damp cloth. It should be remembered that the color of the coating may undergo minor changes within 3-4 months, despite the coloring of the boards with high-quality pigment. However, the surface of the floor will remain the same original, attractive. Then the shade is fixed, not succumbing to changes over the years.

Care

Where apply

Excellent performance properties make the material suitable for use in a wide variety of conditions. Most often, a polymer coating is used for arranging open areas, any premises with a high level of humidity. The composite endures long, cold winters, while retaining its properties and visual appeal. In addition, there are unusual ways to use the material. For example, for the construction of a garden path or a fence made of polymer decking.

With the onset of spring and warm weather, many owners of private houses begin to think about how to transform their terrace, or simply make it. Despite the importance of the foundation, the terrace cover plays an important role, because it is it that takes all the impact of the external environment and mechanical damage. Therefore, the choice of material for creating a terrace floor must be approached very carefully. Decking (wooden covering) for an open terrace should have a lot of advantages. One of the great options is composite decking.

What is this material? Why is it so good as decking? What are its features, characteristics and advantages? How to install such products? You will learn all this from this article.

Production of wood-polymer composite

To begin with, we will analyze the production of the material. A wood-polymer composite terrace board is a finishing material that is made by mixing different types of wood and monomers (substances that form polymers). Due to this mixing, a unique material is obtained, which has improved properties and is ideal for the terrace. It has both the positive qualities of wood and polymers. WPC or thermowood is a great alternative to costly decking materials.

Material production is automated. In special factories, the process consists of the following steps:

  1. Delivery of wood and its crushing.
  2. The process of drying lumber (wood shavings).
  3. The choice of components and the correct ratio. The most successful is called a combination of wood and polymer 1 to 1.
  4. Pressing raw materials and forming lamellas for the terrace.

After that, high-quality decking products are obtained, which have many positive qualities. All thanks to the composition and production technology. And what exactly is included in the composition of products, except for wood and polymers? Here is the list of components:

  • sawdust - from 40 to 70%;
  • binding components, such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride - from 30 to 60%. Sometimes the binder can be grain starch and paper waste;
  • chem. additives, including UV stabilizer, pigments and some fillers - approximately 5%.

The quality of the finished product at the output depends on the percentage of all components. The system is simple: if there is more organic filler (sawdust), then the decking will have a better appearance, it is rather difficult to distinguish lamellas from natural products. But at the same time, the composite board does not boast of durability and moisture resistance. And if there are more polymers in the composition, then the opposite is true.

Advantages and characteristics of WPC

Now consider why the material has won so many hearts. Recently, it is gaining more and more popularity, even though it is not 100% natural wood. It's all about the advantages of the composite board. What are they? Composite board has the following advantages:

Note! The material, like all wooden products, has a minus - a high degree of flammability. Therefore, in case of fire, the decking will flare up quite quickly.

As you can see, there are a lot of advantages of such composite boards. Therefore, if you buy such material for decking, then be sure of its quality and reliability. And what about the characteristics of wood and polymer products? They are the following:

  • let's start with the dimensions of the products: they are produced with a thickness of 2.2-2.8 cm, a width of 13.5-14.5 cm and a length of 1.5 to 6 m;
  • the density of the composite board - from 1 to 1.3 g/cm 3 ;
  • degree of flammability - G4 (burns strongly);
  • water absorption - no more than 5%;
  • weight of 1 m of composite board - from 1.6 to 3 kg;
  • heat resistance - from +80 to -50 °С;
  • tensile strength - 20 MPa;
  • withstands a maximum load of 800 kg / m 2;
  • when pressed, it is deformed by 0.3-1 mm.

But, the question arises: what to look for when buying a composite board?

How to choose a terraced composite board

For those who came to the store for a composite board, it is important to understand that the choice depends on several factors. This includes the composition of the material, its structure, size, appearance and the company that is engaged in production. Let's start with the composition.

If the ratio of materials in it is 70 to 30 (sawdust and polymers), then it will be difficult to distinguish a composite board from a natural one. However, strength, practicality and moisture resistance deteriorate. The service life of the material is 7 years no more. A 50/50 board is the optimal solution where natural beauty, strength, moisture resistance and durability are at their best. And at 40 to 60, the board is colder and resembles plastic.

Now about the structure. Boards can be full-bodied or with voids. High-quality and durable - solid composite boards. They are used in places with possible heavy loads, such as a garage, parking lot or technical site. But for the terrace, a hollow WPC is also suitable. It's cheaper and lasts just as long.

But the appearance of the board is a purely personal decision. The color and structure should be chosen with the style of the entire building. It is important that the terrace fits into the overall landscape and does not violate it. Examine the board, make sure that its coloration is done evenly and without defects. There should be no inclusions or color pigments on the material.

And finally, we want to draw your attention to the manufacturers. It is important to choose a company that has proven itself over the years and has many positive reviews. Here is a list of trusted brands: Volga-Deking, Mirradex, Thermory, Westwood-Polymer, Legro, Woozen and Bruggan. How is composite board installed? Let's find out.

Composite board installation

It is noteworthy, but despite the fact that the composition and characteristics of the products differ from the usual terrace board, its installation is no different. The mounting method can be open or closed. You can see this in the photo.

A popular technique for arranging a veranda, terrace, porch, garden paths or a platform near the pool is laying lamellas from a wood-polymer composite. Flooring imitating wood is visually attractive, adds coziness to the site, and individuality and style to the landscape design. An important advantage of the finish is the possibility of self-installation of the terrace board. To implement the planned project, it is necessary to choose the right decking and follow a simple installation technology.

Terrace board: production technology and composition of polymer decking

"Polywood" is a modern finishing material, in the manufacture of which different types of wood, pigments, polymeric additives and fillers are used to improve the quality characteristics of the decking. The so-called "thermo-wood" has become a worthy alternative to lumber made from natural wood.

The decking board production process is fully automated and consists of the following main steps:

  1. Delivery and crushing of wood.
  2. Drying wood shavings.
  3. Selection of components and dosage. The most successful is the ratio of wood and polymers - 1:1.
  4. Pressing the material and forming terrace lamellas.

The decking includes the following components:

  1. Organic filler (wood, sawdust) - 40-70%.
  2. Binding materials (polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride) - 30-60%. Very rarely, grain starch, waste from paper processing, etc. are added as a binder.
  3. Chemical additives (UV stabilizers, pigments, fillers) - about 5%.

The percentage of components determines the quality characteristics of the finished product. The more organic content, the better the appearance of the decking - the coating is difficult to distinguish from natural wood. However, the moisture resistance and durability of the material deteriorate.

Technical and operational characteristics of the polymer composite

WPC has excellent performance:

  • aesthetic appearance and the possibility of using the material in the arrangement of various structures;
  • environmental friendliness - there are no formaldehyde resins and lead in the composition;
  • the finishing surface does not slip;
  • resistance to mechanical damage;
  • decking with a high content of organic matter exudes the smell of wood and has good tactile qualities;
  • the material is easy to care for - does not need varnishing, painting;
  • due to the presence of polymers, the composite does not rot and endures high humidity;
  • resistance to temperature fluctuations and corrosion;
  • ease of processing, laying and dismantling of the terrace board with your own hands;
  • decking operation period - more than 30 years.

Average technical characteristics of wood-polymer composite:

  • lamella dimensions: thickness - 2.2-2.8 cm, width - 13.5-14.5 cm, length - 1.5-6.0 m;
  • water absorption - up to 5%;
  • density - 1-1.3 g / cc;
  • heat resistance - from -50°С to +80°С;
  • deformation during indentation - 0.3-1 mm;
  • tensile strength - 20MPa;
  • combustibility class - G4 (highly combustible material);
  • the mass of 1 running meter of the product is about 1.6-3 kg.

Criteria for choosing a decking board

A choice in favor of one or another WPC should be made by comparing the main criteria: the composition of the material, the structure of the product, dimensions, appearance and the manufacturer's company.

Material composition. The ratio of components wood / polymers affects the appearance and durability of the board:

  • 70/30 - decking is difficult to distinguish from natural wood. But a large proportion of "flour" from wood reduces the strength and practicality of the coating. Water resistance deteriorates, and the surface wears out over time. Service life - no more than 7 years.
  • 50/50 is the optimal ratio, which preserves the natural decorative effect of wood and the functionality of the polymer filler.
  • 40/60 - the material becomes more "cold", giving the impression of ordinary plastic.

Before buying, it is important to clarify which polymer was used to create the decking:

  1. Polypropylene or polyethylene. Materials with these components belong to a single class. Disadvantages of WPC: low wear resistance and strength, flammability and rather slippery surface (even when dry). In addition, under the influence of sunlight, the resistance to bursting is sharply reduced, and the coating can be damaged when walking in heels. Plus - the cheapness of the product.
  2. Polyvinyl chloride. The board based on PVC is characterized by low flammability class, resistance to abrasion and UV rays. The surface lined with such decking does not slip, so the material is recommended for the design of piers, pools and saunas.

Product structure. There are full-bodied boards and with voids. Whole WPC is more durable and of higher quality. The material is recommended to be used for flooring outside the premises, where shock loads are possible (falling of heavy objects - stones, metal objects). For example, on technical sites, in garages or parking lots.

For laying the floor on a closed veranda, a hollow board is suitable. For coatings with an average degree of load, it is better to choose a type of hollow WPC with cylindrical voids.

Important! To reduce slip when arranging a pool area, a porch or a walkway from a terrace board with your own hands, you need to choose models with a textured anti-slip anti-slip surface.

Appearance. The coloring of the decking is selected taking into account the design of the existing elements and the general style of the building. The finished flooring should be in harmony with the landscape of the local area, the garden and the design of the artificial reservoir. It is necessary to inspect the "polywood" and make sure that the board is painted evenly - the surface should not contain color pigments and various inclusions.

Manufacturer company. A positive reputation and good consumer reviews have been won by composites of foreign and domestic brands: Legro, Mirradex, Bruggan, Relazzo Classic, Thermory, Grinder, Woozen, Ecodeck, Volga-Deking, Thermo Wood and Westwood-Polymer.

Overview of popular terrace decking manufacturers

The leader in the polymer industry Rehau produces lamellas Relazzo Classic. The company's products are manufactured according to a special corporation technology from wood fibers, polypropylene, mineral and biological additives. Decking Rehau is operated in any climatic zones.

Hungarian DPK Legro has a double-sided, indelible surface. Material composition: 50% - wood, 45% - polypropylene, 5% - adaptives. The board is covered with a protective layer and is recommended for places with high traffic.

Woozen- terrace board of the South Korean company LG. In production, embossing technology is used, which makes it possible to achieve an exact repetition of wood.

Volga-Deking(Russia) introduces solid and hollow composite boards on the market. The product consists of 65% wood, 30% polymers and 5% additives. The cost of the material is less than foreign analogues.

Westwood polymer(Russia) sells WPC decking under the Terrapol brand. Advantages of decking: affordable price, a wide range of shades and excellent quality.

Terrace board mounting methods

Terrace boards are fastened in one of the ways: open or closed.

public method requires the creation of holes along the length of the lamellas. For fixing, self-tapping screws treated with an anti-corrosion coating are suitable, which will prevent rust. To prevent the composite material from cracking when screwing in the screws, the board is first drilled to the support beams. The heads of the screws are recessed into the board and covered with plugs. The coating, laid out in an open way, is called "riveted".

Advice. Between the decking lamellas, it is necessary to maintain a gap of about 3-5 mm, since the WPC expands when heated.

private method involves the use of special brackets. Hidden installation is best done on a flat concrete base. The surface should have a slight slope so that moisture does not accumulate under the logs. Advantages of the method: external attractiveness of the coating and maintaining an even gap between the lamellas.

Do-it-yourself decking board installation technology

Necessary materials and tools

Before laying the decking board with your own hands, you need to draw up a sketch of the area for decking. The drawing should display the length and width of the site, the direction of the boards (diagonal, straight, transverse). When calculating the amount of material, it is important to provide a margin of about 10%.

To install a terrace board with your own hands you will need:

  • boards;
  • logs 40 * 27 mm;
  • initial and intermediate brackets;
  • trims for finishing ends;
  • corners;
  • plugs;
  • self-tapping screws 6*70 mm.

From the tools you need to prepare:

  • saw or jigsaw;
  • pencil, tape measure, square, building level;
  • electric drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • rubber hammer.

Foundation preparation

The terrace board is laid on a flat and solid base. For example, wooden beams, cement screed, slab, concrete beams or a hard surface covered with artificial canvas.

The following requirements are imposed on the draft base:

  • the prepared surface should have a slope of about 2 °;
  • in the absence of an inclined flow of water, it is necessary to equip a drainage system;
  • the height of the concrete screed must be at least 10 cm.

Important! Installation work is carried out at an air temperature of more than 2 °. Before laying, the purchased boards must be laid out on a flat substrate and left to “adapt” for one day.

When arranging a terrace on the ground, the base preparation technology includes the following steps:

  1. Mark the site - put pegs around the perimeter of the site and pull the twine. You can mark the boundaries with sand.
  2. Check the levelness of the site and align it according to the level. Tamp the soil.
  3. Sprinkle the prepared surface with crushed stone with a layer of about 8 cm.
  4. Pour sand 5 cm over the rubble.
  5. Apply a reinforcing mesh over the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe site.

Installation lag

Support joists can be made of wood-polymer composite, wooden beams or metal profiles. The thickness of the log should be at least 4 cm. Hardwood logs are suitable for creating the frame. When operating the terrace in the open air, the support beams must be treated with an antiseptic.

Terrace board: do-it-yourself laying. Lag installation scheme.

The distance between the lags depends on the laying direction and the expected loads:

  • with parallel placement - 40-50 cm;
  • diagonal installation at an angle of 45 ° - 25-30 cm, 30 ° - up to 20 cm;
  • if a high load is assumed, then the distance is reduced to 15-20 cm, with an average load - 30 cm, and with a low load - up to 50 cm.

It is necessary to take into account the properties of the decking to narrow and expand. On the terrace, at the junction of the log, there should be a gap of 10 mm. Distance from boards to fences, walls and borders - 20 mm.

"Sheathing" decking and finishing

The order of laying decking boards:

  1. Calculate the location of the lag so that there is a support beam at each end of the WPC.
  2. The first lamella is fixed from the edge of the site perpendicular to the lags. The ends of the decking are fixed on the supporting frame.
  3. Place the bracket under the board and attach it with a screw to the support beam.
  4. Insert the adjacent decking lamella into the clip and fix it with a screw to the log.
  5. In a similar way, carry out the flooring of the entire terrace and trim the edges of the boards.
  6. Frame the end sides with a corner of the WPC.

When finishing a large area, installation is carried out "in a run" - each next row moves ½ the length of the previous lamella.

Features of mounting steps from a terrace board with your own hands

Recently, when arranging the porch, a terraced composite board has been increasingly used. For registration, in addition to the standard decking kit, you will need:

  • edge profile - for decorating the end of steps;
  • special clips for fixing the WPC to the structure frame;
  • end strips when using hollow boards.

Do-it-yourself arrangement of a porch from a terrace board is carried out on a concrete base, steel or wooden frame. When erecting a frame structure, the lamellas are attached directly to the frame, and when “sheathing” a concrete base, a lag will be required.

Installation procedure on concrete steps:

  1. Logs are mounted across the steps - parallel to the descent from the stairs. The spacing of the supports is 40 cm.
  2. The layout begins with the supporting frame from above, maintaining a gap between the lamellas - 2 cm.
  3. The first board is fixed to the frame with a starting clip. Subsequent elements are interconnected by connecting clips.
  4. The design of the riser is carried out with an L-shaped corner.
  5. At the end of the installation of all boards, close the joints with a decorative strip.

Caring for wood-polymer composite structures

"Polywood" is not whimsical in maintenance. The slats are cleaned with a sponge or a soft-bristled brush along the board. To remove stains, use detergents without bleaching agents. In winter, scrap or a metal shovel should not be used to clear snow and ice.

Oil stains, cigarette marks, scratches and slight bulges can be “sanded” with sandpaper.

Scope of the terrace board: a selection of photos

It is known that the ideal floor for the house is made of wood. Such a coating is natural, completely safe for both people and pets, in addition, it is beautiful, aesthetic. If you want your home to have a unique atmosphere of comfort and warmth, feel free to make a choice in favor of wooden floors. They are in perfect harmony with wooden windows, doors made of such material also fit perfectly into the overall design concept.

Natural wood floors are usually combined into four broad categories:

  • Massive board;
  • Parquet board;
  • Block parquet;
  • Terrace board.

The first two options are flooring classics, a tribute to tradition. Lay them in living quarters. Moreover, solid board is often used in commercial buildings - offices, shops, shopping centers.

Alas, far from everywhere it is possible to lay parquet and solid wood on the floor. The bottom line is that such material is very susceptible to temperature and humidity changes.

For example, parquet should definitely not be laid in a bath or bathroom. On open terraces, in saunas, such floors will not last long, their quality will quickly deteriorate - at first the coating is deformed, after that it will begin to rot from direct and intense contact with water.

In this case, the most correct solution is a wood-polymer decking board or decking.

Let's talk more about decking:

  1. When compared with other types of floors, the terrace board is represented by a limited number of species;
  2. A parquet board, for example, is made from various types of wood;
  3. For the production of decking, only 7-9 breeds are used.

How is a deck board different from a simple wooden floor?

  • First of all, it is worth noting moisture resistance. This property of a terraced board is often absolute;
  • As a raw material for decking, mainly exotic wood is chosen;
  • Such material is generally not afraid of any negative influences from the outside;
  • Wood-polymer decking is not afraid of fungi and mold, insects are not afraid of the material;
  • It does not fade, does not darken over time (even if it is under intense sunlight for a very long time) - a very valuable item for a board that was sheathed in open areas;
  • The terrace board with its structure is somewhat reminiscent of an array;
  • It is durable, has a large thickness;
  • Grooves are specially applied to its upper working surface - so that slip resistance is maximum;
  • This is definitely done when a wood-polymer deck board is installed in saunas, baths, on terraces: wherever the material comes into contact with large volumes of water.

Unlike solid boards, terrace boards are not equipped with special compensators on the underside. This material is laid on logs, fastened to self-tapping screws.

About materials

Those breeds that are used for the production of decking boards, have the following qualities:

  • Rot resistance
  • Hardness
  • Not afraid of damage by various fungi, insects

That is, exotic wood species are used.

If we list the most popular exotics", you can note:

  1. Brazilian Teak (Cumaru)
  2. Burmese teak;
  3. Puinkado;
  4. Balau;
  5. Banker.

They are all very beautiful in color - any exotic wood has rich shades, has an expressive, beautiful texture.

Due to the fact that any exotic wood is very expensive, many people often buy larch decking. This decking is unique in its kind, it is made from traditional wood species.

Since larch is widespread in sufficient quantities on the territory of the Russian Federation, it is much more affordable at a price when compared with exotic decking.

Larch known for:

  • Once upon a time, ships were made from such wood;
  • That is, the waterproof qualities of this material are beyond doubt;
  • Larch can be tinted in various shades (which cannot be said about exotic species);
  • Thanks to all this, everyone can choose for their premises just such a floor that will ideally match the color scheme of the interior.

And what can be said about the wood-polymer decking board? The polymer composite material is made from a mixture of plastic and wood. Thanks to this, the products have decent qualities that are ideal for any decking.

You can safely lay this board in commercial premises - where no one is interested in the natural origin of the flooring.

Terrace board made of natural wood is an ideal solution for flooring in wet rooms or somewhere in open space.

Terrace board from the massif of a thermowood

It is no secret that a material such as decking is regularly exposed to various environmental influences.

It can be:

  • People;
  • Ultraviolet;
  • Moisture.

Therefore, the competent choice of rock for the terrace is only part of the task, correct installation is also an important part of the whole process. It should be remembered that thermowood is a living tree, it is not plastic (which cannot be said about a wood-polymer deck board), therefore, a terrace board made of solid thermowood is subject to slight expansion.

But when compared with larch or thermopine, or any exotic species, the expansion of thermoash is predictable and not at all significant.

What you need to know about tremodine is the following::

  1. After complete wetting, the material releases moisture;
  2. Then it returns to its initial humidity value;
  3. For this, only 6 hours are enough;
  4. Can't dry out
  5. This is due to the fact that conditions cannot occur in the environment that would affect the moisture content of the thermowood (which is very small);
  6. On average, humidity is 6%;
  7. In exotic wood or larch, this figure reaches 12%.

When decking is installed from such material, leave gaps between boards:

  • If the width is 10 cm - the size of the gap: 2-3 mm;
  • If 12-13cm: 3-4mm;
  • At 15-16 cm: 6-6 mm;
  • 18-20 cm: 8-9 mm.

The advantages of thermoash and the use of oils

This material does not crack, does not rot. The service life of the board is approximately three decades. In addition, your terrace, finished with this wood, will always look well-groomed, neat. Especially when the material is placed on a flat surface - you can get this if you use.

The board is not subject to significant deformation. All you need to do is to treat the terrace with special oils every couple of years, specifically in order to slightly refresh the tone. The board itself is distinguished by a dark tint (retained throughout its thickness), if you perform a shallow sanding, the boards will look like they are brand new.

If any transparent oils are used, even with UV filters, the thermal wood will burn out. However, this can be said in general about any wood.

Only tinted oils should cover the front face - this is necessary to protect the board from possible burnout.

Terrace board laying

You already have an idea about what a wood-polymer decking board (and thermal wood) is. Now is the time to talk about how these elements fit in general.

How to lay a decking board, the video below clearly demonstrates the whole process. We advise you to watch the lesson even for those people who have rich construction experience behind them - for sure, you will learn something new and useful for yourself.

Everyone knows that decking is a highly demanded material in our time, it is used both for flooring and outdoors. You can buy a terrace board today without any problems - for this it is enough to visit any large or specialized hardware store. The material is made from different wood - the choice is rich here. What should you know about the installation procedure?

Primarily, terrace board has two types of profile:

  1. Fluted;
  2. With a smooth surface.

The material will serve you for decades if you take good care of it, but proper installation is also important - this should be remembered.

  • A terraced wood-polymer board needs air circulation, so we must not forget about the gaps during work;
  • When the lumber is installed, it is slightly deformed - so the gaps can be closed;
  • This situation should be corrected so that there are no problems in the future.

To reduce the complexity, consider recommendations for laying decking:

  • If it is assumed that your flooring will be more than six meters, it is recommended to choose a terrace board, the length of which is 300 cm. The gap between the boards in this case is left at 9 mm. You should not worry - part of the gap will definitely close within a year due to material deformations.
  • If your flooring is more than 12 meters, it should be divided into sections - this way you can make your work easier.
  • To prevent deformation of the entire structure or some individual zones, it is not recommended to use elements with a length of less than 200 cm during the laying of the decking board.
  • In the case when you install a terrace board between two structures that are fixed (for example, it can be walls), when installing, be sure to leave a gap between the materials and the fixed structure itself. A gap of 15 mm is enough.
  • If the wood-polymer deck board is installed at an angle (let it be 45 degrees), it is also necessary to leave a gap of 9 mm. The fact is that the boards, due to which this angle is formed, need to be fixed - mounting clips will help with this. In addition, it must be remembered: such a design should be mounted on two logs.

What else can be said about the installation of a terrace board? If these works are done correctly, the result will delight you for at least ten years - or even more. Thus, if you are going to equip the coating with the help of a terrace board, be sure to listen to our recommendations - this will definitely not be superfluous.

Terrace board mounting methods

To perform the installation of a terrace board, there is different ways:

  • Closed;
  • Open.

The most common is the last option. It is done like this: a wood-polymer composite (a terrace board, which includes a plastic binder) or a regular solid wood decking is simply drilled to the logs, this procedure is done from the front side. To ensure fastening, special self-tapping screws are used (which are coated with an anti-corrosion coating).

Before the fastening procedure, holes should be made in the board. This measure is taken to ensure that the material does not crack when screwing in the screws. The coating, which was made in an open way, is commonly called " riveted”, since the screw heads, recessed into the array, remain visible in any case.

Concealed decking installation:

This type of installation is gaining popularity in recent years. In this case, do it like this:

  1. The terrace board is connected using metal plates;
  2. These plates are already coated with an anti-corrosion agent;
  3. Further, with self-tapping screws, the boards are simply screwed to wooden logs.
The essence of this method is that the fastener connections themselves are hidden from prying eyes - the heads of the screws are not visible!

Like any wood, decking needs care. To make the flooring always look perfect, its surface is periodically washed. Normal detergents are suitable for this.

Remember that you should not wash the terrace board with sand, it is also better to refuse those detergents that can easily damage the top layer of the material.

How to choose the right WPC decking board

If you decide to equip a terrace, veranda or area near the house, it's time to think about how to achieve the optimal combination of aesthetics, practicality, and high performance.

All the stated conditions are met by a terraced wood-polymer board. In general, deck boards are traditionally made from natural wood (most often from larch). But new technologies are making their own adjustments - wood-polymer composite is spontaneously gaining popularity.

What do we know about wood-polymer composite(terrace board with plastic binder)?

  • The appearance of a WPC terrace board is in no way inferior to a wooden material;
  • It has the same woody, pleasant scent;
  • At the same time, the performance characteristics are higher;
  • The service life of a WPC decking board is also longer;
  • Some modern manufacturers are so confident in their product that they give a lifetime warranty on WPC decking!

Nowadays, in the market of finishing and building materials, a terrace board is presented in a wide range. The most important thing is not to make a mistake when choosing.

We bring to your attention a video: wood-polymer decking and its features. Be sure to watch the video, perhaps while watching you will find answers to many questions.

What to look for when buying?

Appearance, colors

The material can be either plain or have a pattern, which, in turn, naturally imitates the structure of wood. A simple example is the products of the Woozen brand: both to the touch and outwardly, it is practically indistinguishable from a board made of natural solid wood.

  1. The imitation of wood fibers is so high quality that the hand feels even a slight roughness, which is typical for natural planed boards.
  2. These fibers do not wear out even under conditions when the flooring is used very intensively.
  3. The color is durable and does not fade in the sun.
  4. Substances that are responsible for the paint are not applied on top of the boards - they are added to the wood-polymer composition at the stage of product molding.

A wood-polymer composite (a terrace board where plastic was used as a binder) contains components that prevent rotting, moisture absorption, fungal infection, warping - they must be added.

Hollow or solid

It is known that the terrace board is:

  • With voids inside
  • full bodied

In the latter case, the decking will be heavier, but more durable. Such material is more expensive. If you are going to mount the floor on a closed veranda, you can safely use a hollow deck board.

If you want to build decking outdoors, it is better to opt for a full-bodied decking - you definitely can’t go wrong. In such a situation, it is really better to overpay.

Composite and its composition

The composition of the WPC, from which the terrace board is made, necessarily contains wood flour, as well as plastic (that is, a polymer).

The optimal ratio of ingredients is 50% flour, 50% polymer binder.

If there is more than 50% wood, the performance of the wood-polymer decking board may be lower, in addition, in this case, the material will be more susceptible to insect damage. The service life will also decrease.

Warranty period of operation

Many manufacturers give a fairly large warranty period for their products: 10, 20 or more years. It is assumed that the material during this time will not rot, will not begin to deform. Cracks will also not appear, the color will remain the same.

The longer the warranty period for WPC is given by the manufacturer, the more confident he is in the quality of his products. That is, it is really a reliable indicator of the quality of the material.

Wood-polymer composite decking is the most popular decking market segment. This is a new and actively developing direction of modern building materials, designed to take care of the environment and, at the same time, surpass their traditional counterparts in terms of practicality and durability.

WPC terrace board: characteristics, types and properties

An important advantage of WPC coatings over wooden ones is their practicality and long service life, which reaches up to 40 years, while such boards do not require annual antiseptic treatment and painting.

Operational and consumer properties

  • Does not slip even when wet
  • High strength and wear resistance
  • Operating temperature range from -50 to +80 0 C
  • Not afraid of moisture, can be used outdoors
  • Does not break down from UV rays, does not fade, does not rot, does not mold

Types and types of decking boards

  • Suture (seam from 2 to 6 mm) and seamless . Suture joints are used on large areas of more than 300 sq.m., where it is important to ensure a large outflow of water. Seamless are ideal, for example, in summer cafes, when you want to make a monolithic coating.
  • corpulent and hollow . Hollow ones are lighter and, accordingly, cheaper, while solid ones are used in "responsible" places (piers, decks of ships).
  • Polymer Composition: PVC(better wear resistance, greater UV resistance, strength, minimum thermal expansion) and polyethylene(cheaper).
  • Appearance: polished (skinned), brushing (treated with brushes), embossing (texture pattern) and embossing (the texture of natural wood).

The use of WPC decking boards

  • Terraces, porches, balconies and loggias
  • Bridges, pedestrian crossings, piers
  • Embankments, park and garden paths
  • Recreation areas by the pools
  • Decks of yachts, ships and landing stages
  • Summer kitchens, gazebos
  • For facade cladding
  • On operated roofs

Now about the mercantile: terrace board price

The total cost of WPC flooring is cheaper than that of natural wood. For example, larch requires annual processing and impregnation with oil so that it lasts more than 10 years. While the purchase price of wood and composite boards is identical.

The price of decking depends on the strength, type of surface treatment and type of polymer, as well as the need and cost of fasteners and accessories. Our recommendation, when comparing prices, is to consider the flooring assembly with clamps and joists.
