Do-it-yourself lifting gates: tips on choosing a material, ready-made drawings, step-by-step instructions. Do-it-yourself garage door manufacturing technology Drawings with dimensions of swing gates for a garage

In many ways, not only its appearance is determined, but also the degree of prosperity of the car owner. At the same time, not every owner can afford expensive and rather complex structures (lift-turn or roller shutter, for example), the manufacture of which involves significant costs. That is why most owners prefer to use simple swing structures in their garage, the manufacture of which is not associated with high costs. To all those who plan to build a garage swing gate with their own hands, we advise you to first worry about studying the relevant materials.

In the process of studying, you will be able to learn that the assembly of such structures is usually carried out according to the following scheme:

  • production of a frame (framework);
  • preparation of gate leaves;
  • painting and insulation of the structure.

Let's consider each of these operations in more detail.

Frame manufacturing

Before starting installation work, it will be necessary to prepare the following working tool:

  • welding machine;
  • Bulgarian;
  • square and tape measure;
  • building level.

Installation work begins with the preparation of a frame structure, which is supposed to be used as a frame base for future garage doors. For the convenience of its manufacture, you should first prepare a sketch of the future frame, which consists of inner and outer parts. This drawing should indicate the height and width of the frame itself (according to the size of the entrance opening), as well as the dimensions of the internal gate used to enter the garage.

Note! When the frame is cooked from the corner, then most often they sheathe the opening.

The preparation of the frame structure begins with cutting the blanks of the channel (or angle) in accordance with the dimensions indicated in the sketch. After that, the resulting blanks are laid out on a hard and even surface in the order indicated on the previously prepared sketch. In the process of laying, it is necessary to carefully monitor the observance of all dimensions, which must exactly correspond to those indicated in the diagram. In this case, the correctness of the formation of corner joints is checked using a square.

After mounting the frame, carried out in compliance with all the previously mentioned requirements, you can start welding it, after which the resulting seams should be carefully sanded.

sashes

In accordance with the typical scheme of swing gates, leaflets are placed inside the frame structure, each of which is made in the form of a separate frame, which is subsequently closed with a solid metal sheet. For their manufacture, as a rule, the same profile is used as in the preparation of the overall frame. The sashes are installed in the following order:

  1. First, the frame elements are slightly “tacked” together for welding.
  2. After that, an estimated installation of the sashes is carried out inside the frame, laid on a hard and even base.
  3. If necessary, the dimensions of the sashes are adjusted (taking into account technological gaps in relation to the main frame).
  4. Upon completion of the adjustment of the dimensions, the workpieces are finally welded into a frame, which is then closed with iron sheets 2–3 mm thick (using the same welding).

At the final stage of installation work, hinged hinges are welded to the gate in pre-designated places. In this case, the lower fixed (supporting) part of the hinge is mounted on the frame itself, and the upper movable part is welded to the sash frame.

As internal locks of the gate, ordinary bolts mounted in the upper and lower parts of the leaves can be used.

Painting and insulation of the structure

It will be more convenient to paint all metal structural elements, as well as to insulate the swing gate leaves before hanging them on the support loops. Before painting, all treated surfaces must be primed, which guarantees a reliable protective coating that can last you for many years.

In order to increase the rigidity of the garage doors, additional metal jumpers (stiffening ribs) are arranged on the inner surface of the doors, welded not only to metal sheets, but also to frame elements in increments of approximately 0.5 meters.

Insulation of metal swing gates is carried out using materials of synthetic origin or foam (polyurethane foam) plates, which are fixed on the surface of the leaves with a special glue. To close the insulation boards, any decorative material suitable for the texture can be used.

At the final stage of the work, the leaves are hung on the hinges, after which it is necessary to check the ease of their movement when opening and closing the gate.

Video

This video is about making garage doors. You will hear good advice about welding, see drawings, and you will know in what order you need to do the work:

To date, a wide variety of garage door designs have been developed and successfully implemented in practice. We offer you a description of the most popular types of gate systems, as well as a guide for self-assembly and installation of swing gates - the easiest design to manufacture, which almost every novice master can handle. As you gain experience, you will be able to assemble more complex systems.

In such gates, the sash moves to the side using a system of guides and rollers. Gates can be installed outside and inside the garage.

Advantages and disadvantages

Among the main advantages of sliding gates, it is necessary to note such points as:

The main disadvantage is the fact that such gates can only be installed on a garage with a wide facade. Its width must be at least such that the sliding sash can completely fit on it.

Such gates can be made and mounted independently. The sashes themselves are made in almost the same way as the sashes of ordinary swing gates. Differences are present only at the installation stage - instead of loops, guides and rollers are used.

A very convenient option. Most often there are systems in which the sash rises and is fixed above the opening. Gates are usually made of galvanized steel. Aluminum structures are also often found - such sashes weigh much less than their steel counterparts.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages are the following:

However, such gates can only be used to equip a private garage located on a protected individual plot. Lifting structures, especially those made of aluminum, have a relatively low rigidity, which does not allow them to provide the required protection of the garage.

Such gates have a rather complex structure. To manufacture them yourself, you need to have good engineering experience and possess the special knowledge necessary to select a suitable counterweight and install related mechanisms.

A novice master can only try to install ready-made factory-assembled lifting gates on his own. This is done quite simply in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

The structure is assembled from several horizontal sections interconnected by means of hinged loops. The end sections are equipped with rollers moving along the guide rails. The guides themselves are bent so that when the gate is opened, it can easily fit under the garage ceiling.

The design is characterized by sufficiently high rates of reliability and rigidity. Inside each section, as a rule, there is already a heater, which additionally increases the heat and noise insulation properties of the gate.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

The disadvantages are relatively low burglary resistance and high price.

To make such a gate on your own will not work. Of course, you can try, but it’s not a fact that a home-made design will work correctly. In addition, the production of sections will take an unreasonable amount of money and time.

Most often they consist of two wings. The gate is based on a metal frame. Sandwich panels, steel sheets and other suitable materials can be used for cladding.

For greater convenience, a gate can be cut out in the sash.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

The main disadvantage is the need for sufficient free space in front of the garage to open the gate. This is especially inconvenient in winter - in order to open the gate, you will first have to clear the path in front of them from snow.

Swing gates are the easiest to manufacture. It is in their favor that it is recommended to give preference to novice masters.

Swing Gate Manufacturing Guide

Pre-plan the dimensions of the future gate in accordance with the dimensions of the opening for entering the garage and buy the required amount of materials. For greater convenience, draw up a drawing, or at least an elementary sketch.

The first stage - the mounting frame

Start by making the base frame. The starting material is a metal corner. The frame will consist of an external and internal support frame.

First step. Measure the opening.

Second step. Cut the corner into blanks of the required dimensions for the manufacture of the outer frame. Lay out the resulting elements on a plane, align them horizontally and align the corners.

To adjust the horizontal, use linings, check the corners with a square. In its absence, you can simply measure the diagonals. Correct any deviations immediately.

Thus, you need to lay out the blanks in the form of a future outer frame.

Third step. Weld the carrier frame. Its outer side should be as smooth and absolutely even as possible, otherwise the gate will not fit tightly enough to it. To ensure the required smoothness, grind the welding seams with an ordinary grinder.

Fourth step. Weld vertical trimmings of the corner into the corners of the structure. They will provide the necessary rigidity of the frame, i.e., allow it to remain geometrically unchanged.

The second stage - the frame

Start building the frame. In the future, you will attach a finishing metal sheet to this frame. The frame itself can be made from a metal profile with a section of 6x2 cm.

First step. Lay the frame face up on a suitable flat surface.

Second step. Insert the rails into the base frame. Align each side of the structure carefully.

Third step. Provide a gap of 15-20 mm between the carrier frame and the inner door frame. To do this, use inserts. Thanks to this gap in the future, the sash will be able to move without difficulty.

Fourth step. Make sure the corners of the frame are straight and finally weld the profiles.

The third stage - sheathing

Be as careful and accurate as possible at this stage. The aesthetic qualities and a number of the most important functional properties of the finished structure fully depend on the correct execution of the skin.

First step. Cut the steel sheet to fit the garage doors. At the same time, the left gate leaf should overlap the right one with a 1-2 cm overlap - take this into account.

Second step. Temporarily fasten the sheets to the frame. To do this, grab them at several points below.

Third step. Trim the lining of the right gate leaf by 10-20 mm (needed for overlap, mentioned earlier).

Fourth stage. Finally weld the sheets to the frame. Weld the material first at the corners and in the center of each box, and then fix it around the perimeter. Thanks to this, the sheets will not move during operation. After welding is completed, the corner and center fixing points must be cut off.

Fourth stage - loops

Hanging hinges are best to buy.

Weld the lower hinge element to the carrier frame. Weld the top element to the outer sash. You can use a curved metal strip to strengthen the connection. It must be attached to the top of the hinged hinge and to the gate leaf.

Additionally, the rigidity of fixing the loops can be increased by welding a reinforcing insert to the inside of the product.

Fifth stage - locks and constipation

The gates in question are most often equipped with padlocks or mortise locks. Additionally, it is recommended to install stoppers and a high-quality deadbolt. These products will allow you to close the garage door from the inside.

Pin stoppers without problems are made on their own. To make such a design, drive a piece of pipe into the ground or the floor of the garage, and immerse a metal rod inside it - the movable element of the stopper. The rod must be passed through a loop previously made in the sash. Make sure that the pipe is not clogged with snow and various dirt.

Locks also require timely and competent care. Protect your gate locks from moisture, especially in winter. Periodically lubricate the locks with oil.

Stage six - painting

The paint layer will provide additional protection of the metal sheet from corrosion and other damage.

Coat the metal with a primer, let it dry, and then apply a double coat of your chosen metal finish paint.

Carry out any painting work either outdoors or in a well-ventilated room!

The seventh stage - installation

First step. Install the outer and inner element of the door frame. Fix to the slopes of the gate opening with metal pins about 18 cm long.

Second step. Cut off the protruding edges of the metal pins, scald them and carefully grind them with a grinder so that in the future they do not interfere with the gate closing. You can paint the pins if you like.

Third step. Fasten the inner and outer parts of the frame with jumpers (metal plates) of 40 mm. Weld jumpers in increments of about 50-60 cm.

Fourth stage. Hang the sashes. If you wish, you can equip the gate of your garage with automation. This is very convenient - you do not have to constantly open and close the doors yourself.

The eighth stage - warming

In the absence of high-quality thermal insulation, up to 50-60% of heat will go through the gate. If you plan to use the garage in the cold season and are going to equip it with some type of heating, be sure to resolve the issue with the arrangement of insulation.

To do this, mount a crate of wooden bars on the inner surface of the gate leaves. Select the fastening step of the elements individually according to the width of the insulation boards. For thermal insulation, it is recommended to use mineral wool and other materials based on it.

Before laying the insulation, fix a plastic film over the crate. Lay the insulation in the cells of the crate. Lay the insulation as tightly as possible, without cracks and gaps. For most regions, a 5-centimeter thick insulation layer is more than enough. Cover the insulation with vapor barrier film. On top of the crate with insulation, fill the clapboard or other facing material.

There is nothing super complicated in the independent design and installation of garage doors. You only need to follow the instructions and be careful at every stage of work. Having understood the procedure for arranging simple swing gates, you can independently build more complex structures.

Successful work!

Video - Automatic swing gates to the garage for a boat

A garage is a mandatory building for a car owner. Those who live outside the city in private houses build garages next to the house or even attach to the house. And those who live within the boundaries of a big city have to store the car in a garage cooperative away from home. But wherever the garage is located, the safety of the car in it is ensured by the gate, the design of which may differ depending on the preferences of the owner and the possibilities of the premises, space and expediency.

The easiest solution would be to buy ready-made gates and install them in place, but you can make garage doors with your own hands, be sure to take into account all the design features and customize them, as they say, “for yourself”. In this case, you will be sure of their quality and reliability.

At the moment, there are several types of garage doors. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. To install some types of construction, a lot of free space is required inside or in front of the garage.

Lift-and-turn design

Most types of garage doors have appeared relatively recently. For example, a structure that, when opened, rises and then leaves under the ceiling. In this case, it is enough to press a certain button on the control panel. This design is based on a hinged-lever mechanism, as well as guides. The main advantage of such gates is that they do not take up free space in front of or inside the garage. However, such a design should be considered only if the building is heated.

swing gate

The most reliable and ancient option is swing garage doors. Similar designs are used everywhere. Often they equip not only garages. After all, such gates work flawlessly even in harsher conditions. A similar design consists of several doors equipped with hinges, as well as a box that is installed in the doorway. These gates close quite tightly. There is no gap between the wings. You can make such a design yourself. After all, the mechanism is quite reliable and simple.

Retractable structures

Sliding gates appeared in the first half of the 20th century. The design consists of one leaf, which moves parallel to the front wall to the side. In fact, there may be several such sashes. This design has a disadvantage. Its installation requires a lot of free space in the front wall of the building. That is why retractable structures are installed mainly in industrial or hangar premises.

Overhead sectional doors

This species appeared not so long ago. The design is a canvas, which consists of sections. When opening, such gates gradually drive under the ceiling, refracting at the same time. These gates are based on guides with a chain transmission and a spring mechanism. The main advantage of the lifting-sectional design is space saving.

Roller shutters

Rolling structures are rarely used as garage doors, as they do not provide adequate reliability. Such gates are aluminum plates, which, when opened, fold into a box placed under the ceiling. It is worth installing such structures only if the garage is located in a protected area and is heated.

Lifting gates are divided into two types:

  • Lifting sectional. The door leaf consists of several parts, which are interconnected by a rigid structure. As they rise, they bend and gather. When lowered, the assembled sections are straightened and aligned to their original (flat) position.

  • Swivel. Unlike the previous type, in this case the main door leaf is not capable of being deformed. The principle of their operation is that the sash rises along a curved path. In this case, the upper part slightly deepens inward. The rest of the sash rises from the outside.

Installing a garage door with a lifting mechanism in two cases is almost the same. And you can do it yourself.

Lift gate advantages and disadvantages

Self-made lifting gates for the garage have a number of undeniable advantages that distinguish them from other types of devices. The main advantages are:

  • Space saving. To raise the sash, a place under the ceiling is used, which, as a rule, is never used. Due to this, you do not need to waste useful meters on the ground next to the garage.
  • The sashes are a single piece. And this is a reliable protection against the penetration of strangers.
  • It is possible to insulate the doors. Most often, polystyrene foam is used for this.
  • It is possible to install a mechanism for automatic lifting.
  • Suitable for installing not only single, but also double garages.
  • External finishing can be any, due to which the gate will harmoniously fit into the decoration of the garage and the design of the entire site.

Cons of lifting gates follow from their design.

There are not many of them, but it is not necessary to write them off. The disadvantages include:

  • The whole leaf of the sash cannot be partially repaired. If damaged, it must be completely replaced.
  • Doors can only be installed in rectangular openings.
  • Installation requires some knowledge.
  • The gate rises up, due to which the height of the opening decreases.
  • Warming must be considered in advance. The fact is that the lifting gate mechanism is designed for a load of a certain size. An additional layer of insulation will entail an increase in the load on the mechanism.

The device of the gate and the principle of their operation

The main structural elements that carry the load are the frame, guides and a mechanism for moving the web. The gate opens automatically (using a remote control) or manually.

Leverage is attached to the bottom of the sash. At the upper ends there are two more guides along which the rollers move. With the help of these elements, the sash is raised. To do this, you just need to pull the handle, which is located at the bottom of the canvas. There are no difficulties with this, since springs that are in a stretched state come to the rescue. The sash lifting scheme can be seen in the picture above.

Lifting mechanisms

The lifting mechanism can be of two types:

  • Lever-spring. This is the most popular mechanism among garage owners. It is characterized by simple design and reliability. The manufacture of metal gates with a similar mechanism involves precise adjustment of the springs, precise installation of guides (along which the rollers will later move).
  • If the sash is heavy, a counterweight mechanism is preferred. In this case, a winch is used. A counterweight is fixed on one side, which is connected to the other edge of the sash with a cable.

The choice of a suitable mechanism is made taking into account the specific situation.

Preparatory work

Before you make and install a lifting garage door with your own hands, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work.

The surface of the walls and ceiling must be flat so that the guides are installed without tilting. Any dust that gets on the rollers or guides can disrupt the operation of the entire mechanism. Therefore, all construction and finishing work inside the garage must be completed. This does not apply to gender. This is due to the fact that the frame goes inside at least 2 centimeters. Therefore, it will be necessary to complete the construction of the floor after the installation of the garage door has been completed.

The opening must be ready for the installation of the gate frame. It is used for basic calculations. Therefore, you need to know its dimensions. The dimensions required for the construction of the gate are described in the drawing of the overhead garage door in the picture below.

Necessary materials and tools

Depending on the size and design of the gate, the amount of materials required may vary. But with the simplest solution for the manufacture of metal gates, you will need:

  • Wooden blocks 120x80 mm for the box;
  • Wood bars 100x100 mm for the ceiling;
  • Metal pins for fixing the structure;
  • Metal corners 35x35x4 mm for the manufacture of the frame;
  • Metal corners 40x40x4 mm for rails;
  • Channel 80x45 mm;
  • Spring with an inner diameter of 30 mm;
  • Metal rod with a diameter of 8 mm;
  • Cloth for the sash.

This is a set of necessary materials for the manufacture of gates with manual lifting mode. If desired, you can purchase a drive to automate this process. The list of required materials may be changed or supplemented. It is difficult to describe everything in detail, up to a self-tapping screw or a bolt. After all, even a slight change in the design of the gate will entail a change in this list.

In order to assemble and mount a lifting gate for a garage with your own hands, you will need a grinder, a drill with drills for metal and wood, and a welding machine. You will also need other tools that every owner has: a hammer, a tape measure, a screwdriver, wrenches, a level, a pencil.

Construction stages

Gates from a professional pipe are made in accordance with the following steps:

  • Frame preparation and assembly;
  • Installation of rollers;
  • sash manufacturing;
  • Attachment of accessories.

These steps explain how to make your own overhead gate. Next, we will consider each stage in detail.

Frame manufacturing

The basis on which the gate will be attached is the frame. It is on it that most of the load of the entire structure will lie. With its manufacture, work begins.

The list of required materials includes wooden blocks. This is the simplest and most economical option. They can be replaced with a metal structure, which will be a more reliable option. But everyone makes their own choice. It practically does not affect the installation process.

A box is assembled from the bars. For their connection, metal corners or plates are used. The bottom bar must be at least 2 cm deep into the floor. This must be taken into account during the assembly process. When the box is twisted (in the case of metal - welded), its control check is carried out. It is placed in the opening and the position is checked vertically and horizontally. If the frame stands correctly, it is fixed with anchors (metal pins) from 30 cm long. They are taken at the rate of 1 pin per 1 running meter.

After that, horizontal guides are installed, which are located under the ceiling.

Installing rollers

When the frame is installed, you can begin to attach the brackets for the rollers. To prevent the gate from clinging, the upper brackets are attached a little deeper than the lower ones. You can clearly see this in the picture below. Bolts are used to fasten the rails. At this stage, it is very important to accurately measure the level.

Clamps are installed at the edges of the rails. They will hold the rollers, thereby keeping the canvas in the open (closed) position.

Leaf preparation

The shield itself, which will serve as the gate leaf, can be made of various materials. But, since it will provide reliable protection for the garage, be subject to external climatic influences, it is better to choose more stable materials. These may be the following options:

  • Frame made of wooden blocks, upholstered on the outside with a metal sheet;
  • Use a solid metal sheet;
  • Sheathe the frame of metal profiles with metal.

Anything can be used as a finishing (outer) layer, even plastic. To protect against frost, the shield can be upholstered with a layer of insulation.

In order not to open the gate from the professional pipe completely every time, a gate can be made in the shield. It will be possible to enter (exit) through it without using the entire structure completely. Some garage owners also provide a window in the sash. If necessary, it is easy to install.

When the shield is ready, it is installed on the rails and the operation of the mechanism is checked.

Additional elements

Installation of the gate is completed by installing additional elements. These include handles, locks, heck for fixing the gate.

Handles are necessary in order to open (close) the gate more conveniently. If they are present, you do not need to cling to the edge of the sash. It is more convenient if the handles are located at the bottom of the shield. And both outside and inside.

If the gate is equipped with a gate, then inside you can make a latch. This allows you to secure your property. This technique will allow you to open the sash only from the inside. The same solution can be resorted to if the garage is attached to the house and a door connects them.

If the garage is separate and there is no gate, locks must be provided. If it is not possible to buy special ones, then you can hang ordinary ones. This is done with the help of shackles that are attached to the canvas and the outer side of the vertical frame.

The production of metal gates with a lifting mechanism is completed with an external finish of the structure. They are treated with protective agents, painted, and finishing materials are fixed.

Automation system

The automatic drive can be installed on the overhead garage door. The prices for the whole structure will increase from this. But the level of comfort will also increase significantly. It will not be necessary to open (close) the gate manually. Everything can be done by remote control. It is important to choose the type of drive that suits your overhead garage door. Their prices are in the range of 300-800 euros.

Installing the drive will not be a problem. The instructions indicate the sawing of the contacts, which will need to be followed. It is difficult to give an example, since each manufacturer has its own connection standards.

By connecting the automatic opening system, the lifting gates, manufactured and installed on their own, will not differ from the factory ones. This will enable remote control using the remote control.

So, by following a few simple steps, you can get a lifting garage door. In addition to significant cost savings, this will also entail a host of other benefits. This design saves space. The gate does not require free space in front of the garage, as is the case with the swing option. They take up space under the ceiling, which is not used in other situations. An independent choice of materials for the manufacture of the structure will allow you to do everything in accordance with your views and requirements. Complementing the device with an automatic drive will increase the level of convenience when using the gate.

Some secrets to protecting garage doors from burglary

Even installing a good lock may not protect your car and protect it from robbery. After all, you can always cut the hinges with a grinder and just remove the sashes. This is exactly what they did in the turbulent nineties. What to do?

  1. From the inside of the sash frame, in the area of the same loops, we weld a piece of the corner to the frame. It should turn out like this: when closing the sash, the corner will enter 1 - 2 cm into the wall (for this you need to chip the brick a little) and cling to the frame of the garage. Even by cutting off the hinges, intruders will not be able to remove the sashes, as they will firmly adhere to the garage frame.
  2. Install a spider lock, the pins of which will enter the walls, floor and ceiling of the garage. It is desirable that, in addition to the "spider" itself, a locking mechanism be installed that locks the "spider" in the closed state until this mechanism is opened using a unique key.

When protecting your garage from hacking, the main thing is not to be too smart, so that in case of loss of keys there is at least some chance to get into the garage without resorting to taking out the walls.

Making a garage door with your own hands takes about 1 - 2 days of work. In this case, your product will have a unique size and design, if you want something special.

Gates that do not open with wings, but slowly disappear from our eyes, “leaving” along the walls of the garage, are convenient, because they do not interfere and are not bulky, do not take up space. The owner of such a device does not need to think about where it will be placed when it is opened, when a garage is being built, there is no option “difficulties in winter due to snow”. When opening such an entrance, only the lower part of the gate door near the garage ceiling is visible. Lifting gates are very safe, because they are, in fact, a single piece of wood or metal and are very difficult to crack. If galvanized, they will also be very resistant to corrosion. The door will reliably protect against thieves, keep heat inside the building and will become very convenient and easy to use, but buying it is very expensive. Much cheaper and more fun to do do-it-yourself garage door.

Important! Before making such gates, you need to understand that they also have disadvantages:
You only need a rectangular opening for the entrance to the garage, the arch will not work, except perhaps decorative.
You must first open the gate, and then drive close to the garage (you need a space of about one and a half meters). When the gate is open, the height of the garage decreases by 15-20 cm.

Lifting gates are very safe, because they are, in fact, a single piece of wood or metal and are very difficult to crack.

A model with sections is a canvas, which is made up of blocks of wood, plastic, or steel, about 1.5 m in size. During the lifting of this door, the blocks are "pulled" up and then returned back in the same way. Inside, the wooden sheet will be filled with polyurethane foam, which will not let the cold into the garage in winter. The panels are connected with articulated hinges, the moving parts are made of steel or plastic (steel is better, they will last longer), and the guide skids are resistant to destruction and rust due to their composition.
Unfortunately, such a door is almost impossible to make on your own, and cracking it is quite simple. You can buy a ready-made prefabricated kit and put the door in order to get its main plus - simplicity and ease for the owner.

Lift-and-turn doors - sashes “drive” under the roof during movement using the action of hinges and levers. Such a door is very reliable and it is very difficult for an attacker to crack it in order to rob a garage. They are also quiet during the ascent, because they do not use “driving” elements: guides and rollers, while using them, it is quite difficult to pinch your finger. This is an expensive choice, about 60 thousand rubles. for the object and 15 thousand - for installation.

Important! Gates can also be without automation, with manual control or automatic on the electric drive. Naturally, the former are cheaper. The cost will be from 14 to 75 thousand rubles. From 7 to 15 thousand pay for the installation. You can buy parts separately, but is it worth the trouble? It is easier to purchase an installation kit so that you can assemble and mount it later. A detailed description of the phased assembly is attached to each type of door.

Lift-and-turn doors - in the process of movement, the sash “drives” under the roof using the action of hinges and levers

This type of door includes a frame, a lifting sash and a mechanism that opens the door. A steel or wooden frame is mounted in the opening; profiles directly for the canvas must be placed in the box. It is made of wooden boards, sandwich panels, it should be covered with metal. A door made from a single piece of wood is a very expensive pleasure, the choice is simpler - boards impregnated with a chemical composition that will shelter from the weather and covered with metal painted in any color. You can glue the tree with pieces of pressed foam or other insulating material.

Before you start directly making the gate, you need to study the available methods of lifting.

  • Method when using hinges and levers. A simple design promises reliability, but you need to mount the guide profiles very well and smoothly adjust the spring tension. Profiles should be placed parallel and even.
  • Counterweight method. The cable is fastened down at the corners of the frame, passed through the block, led to the winch pulley, and at its end there is a counterweight. Its mass will be commensurate with the weight of the gate. The option means that the frame and frame will be subject to considerable load, it is advised to choose such a mechanism exclusively for huge gates. Next step: designing the gate. We measure the opening and draw a sketch (we search the Internet for drawings).

Important You will need the following details: a metal rod for a voltage regulator with a diameter of 8 mm; corner for the rail section - 40 x 40 x 4 mm, on the frame - 3.5x3.5x0.4 cm; wooden blocks with a section of 12 by 8 and ceiling 10 by 10; channel bracket 8 x 4.3 x 0.5 cm; metal pins; spring diameter 3 cm.

The box is assembled from wooden bars, their ends are connected with steel plates or corners, and the bottom deepens 2 cm deep into the floor, then we fix it in the opening with steel pins.

This type of door includes a frame, a lifting sash and a mechanism that opens the door.

The frame is made like this: they take a thick corner, its parameters are in direct proportion to the sheet of the shield, at 25 they take the 75th, at 50 the 100th corner. Next, we measure the garage and prepare the opening for attaching the frame, you need to make sure that its surfaces are smooth and even, if this is not the case, we take the grinder in our hands and work. Next, we are looking for a workspace for the welding process. We will have 2 channels lying on the welding site, their parameters are 20 cm smaller than the frame. We cut off the corners along the length from both ends, making sure that they fit snugly. We weld them together, make notches and use the four (five) of the electrode, create a frame, but do not weld very tightly. We apply it to the opening and control the density, if it is not there, then we adjust what happened and weld it again, then we clean the seams. We do the same with the second part of the frame, then the same - on the second wall, the frame should be made double - internal and external, install it.

A support for the channel bracket is made from the corner, in one shelf we make a hole to fix it to the racks, in the other - 3 holes to fix the spring bracket. We fix the bracket by drilling 3 holes in one of the shelves. Next, we make an adjusting plate from an iron strip, we combine the spring and the bracket with it. We bend the last coils of the spring with hooks, attaching a voltage regulator from the bar to the bottom. We create a hinged corner for the lower part from the corner, drill a hole of 8.5 mm and weld it to the frame, retreating from the lower edge to the central part of the hole. Thus, we make preparations for the manufacture of a lever for lifting on a 12 cm hinge. Further, we weld a plate for the voltage regulator to its end.

We need two corners for the gate to move. We take two corners, dock and connect along the edge so that the distance between the tops is at least 5 cm. We weld the rail to the plate with holes, leave 8 cm between the lower edge of the cross member and the axis of the guide. We weld a piece of channel with an indent of 12-15 to the second end of the rail see Next, we attach it to the ceiling bar. You can install additional protection devices at will, as well as rubber edging and lining, they will make the structure more stable and will give stability to the structure.

Garage Doors

It is advised to shed a trench with concrete along the length of the stroke between the side posts, press the channel parallel to the ground, when it hardens, we weld both frames.

Canvas installation

We measure the diagonal, taking into account the dimensions, bait it by welding, all kinds of gaps are excluded, we clean the seams and put the canvas. We attach the brackets and guides, their horizontal must be made perfect, then: we insulate the canvas, fasten the metal sheet, clean the seams, degrease. We adjust the springs, fix the internal fittings. The whole celebration of work and design will take two or three days.

The option is complicated, but they are airtight and better protect the room. They can be electric or manual. The first option is convenient, just press a button or remote control - you're done. But the manual drive breaks less often, and it’s easier to make a shield for it. The necessary parts cannot be made at home. Parts cannot be bought on the market, it is better to buy a factory kit.

The garage doorway should be measured and estimated whether a standard canvas will fit, also check that the side parts and the top from the bottom of the opening are in the same plane. We add 50 cm to the height of the doorway (if the gate is driven - 100 cm), this is the length of the garage necessary for the gate to lie on its ceiling.

The option is complicated, but they are airtight and better protect the room

Sectional doors consist of a leaf, locks, movement mechanism, spring balancing mechanism and guide modules. Tires are attached along the edges of the opening, which run under the ceiling, and the gate moves along them. It is better to buy polymer sections, they practically do not corrode, do not create noise, withstanding temperatures of -50 - +60.

Installation scheme

Create markup to secure the frame and component elements. Assemble the frame structure (not much different from the similar algorithm for up-and-over doors). Everything is standard: we put the frame, fasten the rails to the ceiling with bolts, but there is no need to drill holes and make other structures to keep it on the weight. We collect the canvas, starting from the bottom, we equip the panel elements with rollers. We protect the structure with casings. We check - if everything is done correctly, the canvas will not move by itself, hanging at the level at which it was installed.

It is worth saying in conclusion - home-made sectional doors must be safe. The bet is your own car, or even your life. You should be extremely careful about the installation rules, adhere to safety precautions and pay a small amount to a specialist who will check the quality of the door installation after the owner's efforts.

Do-it-yourself lifting gates

The modern construction market is represented by various options for garage doors with different price categories that can suit the needs of any potential buyer. However, if you have a welding machine at hand, you can make them yourself. This is done not because of financial difficulties, but to satisfy their ambitions.

Every day exploiting the structure, there is pride because it was done without anyone's help. Walls and foundations protect the car from bad weather conditions, and secure gates from the possibility of robbery. The photos and videos presented in the article will help you understand the technology for manufacturing garage doors.

  • Types of garage doors

    To date, there are the following types of garage doors:

    Currently, the most common garage doors are swing. Using all the necessary elements, you can make a design from start to finish with your own hands. It is swing garage doors that will be used as an example.

    Preparatory work

    Every design idea should start with a work plan and detailed description. When drawing up a drawing for garage doors, you should take into account all the requirements that apply to them. If installation is required in an existing opening, then its measurements are first taken, after which the sashes are created. However, if it is possible to increase or decrease the opening, then the following rules must be followed:

    • The minimum distance from the gate post to the side of the car should be 30 cm. It is better to do it with a margin, because in the future it is possible to purchase a new car with large dimensions.
    • The height of the opening should be 2 m.
    • The thickness of the steel sheet required for the garage is 3 mm.

    These simple rules everyone should know who dared to take on such a task. Subject to these requirements, the question will never arise of how to make a drawing for a garage.

    Also, welding will be required for the work. Before you start using it, you should take care of the necessary materials and tools. To create a standard design, you will need:

    Required tools:

    • roulette;
    • square and level;
    • welding machine and grinder.

    DIY garage door steps

    Making a frame for a gate

    For garage door manufacturing you need to choose a flat area. If it is not possible to find such a place, then a semblance of foundation columns should be made. There should be a distance between them that will be equal to the dimensions of the future frame, after which the support is leveled and four profile pipes of the desired size are measured. They are interconnected at the corners and slightly raised above the base. This is done with the help of bricks and leveled in such a way that the structure is located in a single plane.

    start weld the frame at the corners. During the welding process, it is necessary to constantly check the horizontal level and each element individually. It is very important that the pipes are perfectly straight. If you make a mistake at this stage, then later it will be possible to correct it only with the help of a sledgehammer.

    make support pads made of metal plates n, which will be used as a frame attachment to the garage wall. Fastening can be carried out by welding to metal mortgages or using anchor bolts. In the latter case, it is necessary to create holes for anchors.

    Gate gate manufacturing

    Do-it-yourself swing gates made in the same plane with the frame. To make it more convenient to work with the alignments, the supports are temporarily welded from below. You will need 12 metal supports, four plates on the long and two on the short tubes of the frame. On the base plates along the inner perimeter of the frame, lay the details of the alignment. The left and right sections are represented by four pipe sections. So that later they close well, a gap should be left between the inside of the sash and the frame.

    After welding the corners, in order to strengthen the structure of the doors, diagonal or vertical and longitudinal stiffeners are installed. They are also made from corners or pipes. In order for the corner seams to be neatly connected to the metal sheets of the door, they must be carefully sanded.

    Do sheet metal marking. Be sure to take into account the gap between the gate and the frame, which must be closed with a sheet of metal. So that the door in the closed state does not have slots, on the left side the metal should be cut flush, and on the right side more by 2-3 cm. The sheet is placed on the gate and welded to it. Welding is performed on a horizontal surface, so it is placed at a height convenient for the welder from the floor. The sheet on the hinge mounting side must be welded end-to-end with the gate frame.

    Hinge installation

    It is necessary to try to by the beginning of work, the hinges had already been made. The upper part of the loop is welded to the canvas, and the lower part is welded to the frame. To strengthen the fastening, reinforcement is used, which is applied from the inside. It provides welding with special strength.

    To close the shutters and as an additional security, it is best to use a deadbolt mounted on the inside of the canvas. Locks are hinged and mortise. For a padlock, external hinges are required, and to install a mortise lock, it is recommended to use an additional metal plate. It is best to install 2 or 3 locks. If one lock breaks, then even in this case it will be possible to close the door.

    Garage door painting

    This is necessary in order to to protect metal from corrosion. Painting is carried out in various ways, for example, by powder method. It is carried out in the factory, so it will not work on your own. If the painting of the garage door is done by hand, then a primer is first applied.

    After the canvas dries, it is covered with paint in several layers. Since any paint fades sooner or later, the color should be updated once a year.

    Installation and insulation

    To carry out installation of the outer and inner parts of the frame, metal pins measuring 15 - 18 cm are taken and fixed in the slopes. The ends of the pins should be cut and sanded so that they do not interfere with the closing of the valves. Both parts of the frame must be fastened with metal plates by welding, after which the finished sashes are hung.

    With properly done work, do-it-yourself garage doors in the photo are almost impossible to distinguish from factory models.

    Since in a heated room about 60% of heat escapes through the canvas, then many seek to insulate garage doors. It's pretty easy to do this job. It is only required to make a wooden crate from the inside, after which the space is filled with polystyrene foam or mineral wool. After that, the crate is covered with facing slabs or clapboard. Thus, swing garage doors are obtained, completely made by hand. In more detail, the manufacturing process of the gate is presented in the video.

    Thus, building a garage door- It's a tricky business, but it's doable. You can make the structure yourself in a fairly short time, as evidenced by the video, which clearly demonstrates all the stages of such a process. And thanks to the photo, you can decide on the most successful version of the gate for the garage.
