Proper kitchen layout. Kitchen layout options - online guide. Perfect kitchen interiors with a linear layout

As a rule, households spend a lot of time in the kitchen, and housewives even more.

Therefore, this room should be as comfortable as possible, but also functional.

Of course, comfort and external order depend on the correct layout of the kitchen.

In this article, we will look at what planning methods are and how they are consistent with your wishes and the size of the premises.

Planning rules

The design of the kitchen depends on various indicators: the location of the room, its area and shape, the number of people living in the house and the placement of communications outlets.

These nuances should be taken into account during the development of the room environment before buying kitchen furniture.

By adhering to some rules of planning and arrangement, you can organize the most harmonious and comfortable kitchen.

So, consider the options for planning a kitchen:

Arrangement of reference parts of the work area in the form of a triangle. With this method, the sink, refrigerator and stove are installed so that the hostess has the opportunity to save time and energy as much as possible without making unnecessary movements.

It will be convenient if these items are placed in the corners of the presented triangle with an area of from four to seven m2.

First you need to decide on the installation of the sink, since it depends on the place where the communications are output and is the leader in operation in the kitchen.

After that, a place is determined for the location of household appliances and parts of a furniture set.

The stove should not be placed next to the sink for safety reasons. It would be better to leave about 40 cm of countertops on both sides.

Also, do not install the stove next to the window. But its placement next to the table at which the family gathers for dinner will be an excellent setting.

As for the refrigerator, it will fit well into the corner of the room without dividing the work surface into short segments.

At the same time, its door should open towards the wall so as not to take up free space in the kitchen.

In the area of the working triangle, in no case should you install high parts of a furniture set or equipment, so as not to reduce the area of this zone.

Kitchen layout options

The L-shaped layout of the kitchen in the apartment is a universal option for arranging a room of any size.

But it will be most suitable for medium-sized square-shaped kitchens. For the organization of the triangle, which was mentioned above, the L-shaped environment of the kitchen is the most functional.

Since with this planning method, furniture and household appliances are placed along two adjacent walls. This determines the rational and well-organized area of the working area.

The advantage of this arrangement is the ability to form a comfortable area for dining and convenient installation of equipment.

The disadvantage of such planning will be the inconvenient arrangement of furniture in the kitchens of a long and narrow shape.

A single row or linear arrangement of the headset is ideal for planning a small kitchen.

In this case, only one wall of the room is occupied, so that the refrigerator is located on one side of the sink, and the stove on the other.

The advantage of such a design organization is the arrangement of small spaces.

The downside, there will be insufficient space for cooking and installing the necessary household appliances.

A two-row or parallel arrangement of furniture and other items is convenient for organizing a kitchen layout with a window located opposite the door or in the passage room.

Lockers with this method of arrangement are located along one wall, and a sink with a stove is on the opposite side.

The advantage of this arrangement of objects is the organization of spacious kitchens with the possibility of installing additional household appliances.

The disadvantage of a two-row layout is the difficulty in organizing a dining area and the unreality of use for small spaces.

The U-shaped layout of the situation is suitable for arranging kitchens with an area of at least ten m2.

With this method, all objects are located along three adjacent walls so that each of the elements of the triangle is located at one of the walls.

The advantage of the U-shaped layout is the ability to equip the kitchen with a sufficient amount of necessary equipment and take up free space as rationally as possible.

The island layout of the kitchen is interesting in its ability to beautifully and functionally organize spacious rooms with a square of 16 m2.

This is an ideal option for planning a kitchen-studio, since the basis for placing furniture and appliances is to install a dining table or bar counter in the center of the room.

It is this way of arranging a large kitchen that makes it possible to zone the dining area and a place to relax in studio kitchens.

The only disadvantage of such a layout is its unrealistic organization in a small room. The peninsular type of furnishings in the kitchen is a kind of offshoot from the last planning method.

Its distinctive feature is the combination of a piece of furniture located in the center with the main row of objects installed along the wall.

The advantage of this arrangement is a more economical use of space than in an island layout.

The last method of arranging furniture and appliances in the kitchen is a free layout or, as it is also called, non-fixed. This method is characterized by the presence of wheels at the table or cabinet, which allows its movement and change of location.

The presented photos of the kitchen layout in this way will show you this know-how in arranging the room.

As you can see, kitchen planning depends not only on your preferences, but also on the characteristics of its premises, in particular on the area and shape of the room. Therefore, it is very important to take into account the features of your kitchen even before designing it.

Kitchen layout photo

The kitchen has long been not only a place where food is prepared, but also a cozy room for socializing with friends or gatherings with the whole family. Each hostess presents her in her own way. But what types of kitchens actually exist, and how to competently design your own so that it is truly comfortable and convenient in it?

Types of kitchen layout

Planning is a rather complex issue that often causes controversy. Everyone sees it in their own way and it is very difficult to come to a universal version. It's good if the size of the room allows plenty of experimentation. And if the kitchenette is small, then you won’t particularly run away. Consider the basic requirements for the design of the premises and workspace.

 1. The rule of the golden triangle (in our case, it consists of a stove, refrigerator and sink, which should be located next to each other).
 2. The distance from the stove to any work surface must be at least 40 cm.
 3. The ideal place for a refrigerator is a corner.
 4. The place of washing is determined first. And then the rest of the layout.

This is with regards to the rules for the formation of a comfortable working area. Now let's look at the main types of kitchen layout.

 1. Corner (L-shaped). A universal option for both large and small rooms, but it is still preferable in rooms with an area of 8 sq. m. This layout allows you to easily place all the necessary equipment and provide a sufficient number of jobs. Not suitable for narrow spaces.
 2. Linear (along the wall). Ideal for small kitchens, but leaves little choice for installing appliances. Just the bare minimum.
 3. Parallel (two rows). This option is used only in large kitchens, which are a walk-through (through) room, so we will not focus much on it.
 4. Circular (U-shaped). This layout is well suited for rooms ranging in size from 12 square meters. m and more. It is very convenient in terms of organizing the working space, but you will have to dream up a lot with the dining area.
 5. Island. Only suitable for over 16 sq. m. In fact, this is a linear layout with a small removal (island) separately, the dimensions of which can vary from 1 to 2 meters in length.
 6. Peninsular. This option is well known as a kitchen with a breakfast bar. It is similar to the island, only the "island" here is part of the main kitchen.

Zoning

Unfortunately, in the conditions of an apartment, it is rarely possible to separate the working area for cooking from the dining area. Increasingly, there are options when the kitchen is combined with the living room and divided into zones using various methods.

Furniture zoning is the easiest and most convenient option. It is enough to visually separate the kitchen and the room with a small closet, shelves or at least a sofa so that the boundaries of the territory are visible, but the room remains intact and free.

Zoning with partitions is a more time-consuming method, because it requires a small repair and installation of a partition. Usually it is made of drywall with a height of 70 to 120 cm. It makes no sense to make it higher, because the "transparency" of the room is lost.

Zoning with light is a very controversial technique that requires contacting a specialist. On your own, you are unlikely to be able to correctly arrange the lighting. As a rule, a brighter light is installed in the work area, and an additional chandelier is hung over the dining room (ideally, movable so that it can be lowered above the table).

Zoning with podiums and ceilings is the most expensive of all options, which implies high-quality work by specialists. With the help of a podium (raising the floor), you can separate the working area from the dining area, and different ceiling heights can create the effect of separate rooms.

Design and theme

Of course, every hostess has her own taste. There are many design options using different themes. We will look at the main types of cuisine styles that are popular always and everywhere. Of course, everyone can choose their own design. But before you decide, evaluate your capabilities and budget, consider the arrangement of furniture in the room, see what types of kitchens suit you, it is better to show photos of the options you especially like to the designer in order to create the perfect kitchen together.

classic kitchen

Strict and clear lines, restrained and unobtrusive shades, high functionality and rationality. This kitchen will last for many years and will never go out of style. But even the classics are different. Each designer uses different types of kitchen finishes. All types of classic kitchens involve the use of natural materials. Wooden cabinet doors, handles, walnut or oak finish. Kitchens made in black or dark brown are especially appreciated. As a rule, the classics are monotonous, discreet drawings on textiles are occasionally used.

Country style

It is rustic, very popular lately and suitable for rooms of any size. If we talk about home types of kitchen design, then country is perhaps the most comfortable option. Light and warm shades, natural materials are somewhat reminiscent of the classics. However, the decorations on the furniture and the addition of the picture with various accessories make this style recognizable and unique. Even light scuffs and artificial antiquity look so harmonious here that it is difficult to imagine this kitchen in a different way.

Modern kitchen or high-tech

And this is the complete opposite of country style. There are no natural materials here and glass, metal and modern technologies rule the show. As a rule, all types of kitchens in this style are made in two contrasting colors using clear lines and ideal proportions. The main disadvantage of this design is its high cost. And the types of kitchen facades are far from suitable here.

Provence

We have considered the main types of cuisine, but this is not all. There is, for example, such a direction as soft light shades, thin and elegant furniture, a variety of fabrics and an abundance of house plants. Thanks to these little things, these types of modern cuisine are very cozy and comfortable.

Additional design

Finishes are selected based on design and features. But it is worth remembering that in the design it is important to pay attention not only to the materials from which the kitchen and furniture are made, but also to details such as curtains, lamps and lamps, various accessories, whether it be a basket with artificial fruits or a vase of flowers. Each such trifle creates coziness in the kitchen and allows you to work without irritation even for a long time in a row.

Kitchen materials

When ordering furniture, it is important to consider all the details. Carefully read what types of kitchen materials the manufacturer can offer, because it depends on this how long it will last you. There are many options:

 • natural materials (MDF, chipboard, solid wood);
 • semi-natural (MDF with PVC coating);
 • artificial (plastic, metal).

The choice depends not only on the size of the wallet, but also on what design you have chosen, because all types of kitchens have their own unique material selection criteria.

Furnishings

In addition to the work area, stove and refrigerator, it is extremely important to think about how to arrange the rest of the furniture. A dining area, additional tables, a high chair - all this must be determined in advance in its place.

For small kitchens, use small square tables and a few (2-3) chairs that are easy to push. If the area allows, you can install a large round table in the center. In any case, it is important that the furniture not only harmoniously fit into the design, but also be comfortable.

Kitchen appliances

Any kitchen requires the presence of equipment. For example, both a dishwasher and a modern electric kettle and microwave will fit into high-tech. But the classics require a certain restraint, so a multi-colored trash can or a bright pink stove will hardly be appropriate there. Otherwise, there are no restrictions, because modern appliances are so diverse in design that they are suitable for all main types of cuisine.

Proper lighting

Lighting is a very important part of design. Firstly, it is necessary to think over the location of the fixtures in advance in order to make the wiring, since not all types of kitchens involve any changes in this regard. Here are some tips to help you avoid mistakes when choosing kitchen lighting.

 1. Plan the location of fixtures and sockets in advance, but not before the kitchen design project is ready. This is important, because the lamps should be clearly above the work areas, but there is no need for additional light above the stove.
 2. One lamp for the whole kitchen is the biggest mistake. Of course, in Soviet times this was considered enough, but today progress has stepped far forward. Of course, overhead lighting should be present, but it is extremely important that there are additional light sources for work areas.
 3. The lack of the ability to adjust the light is also a gross mistake. Think over your design so that you can turn on the lighting individually, for example, just above a table or work area. It will also help you save on electricity bills.

The ideal kitchen is not only beautiful design, but also convenience. Therefore, it is important to take into account all the nuances during the creation of the project.

 1. See what types of cuisines are right for you. You can get photos of various layouts from the designer or look at thematic resources.
 2. Discuss in advance the points that are important to you, for example, where you want to place the refrigerator or close any wall defect.
 3. Think about what kitchen appliances you plan to install, because not only the size and layout, but also the number and location of outlets depend on it. It would be sad if the kettle or oven were left without electricity, right?
 4. Remember the golden triangle rule. All the most necessary items should be nearby, ideally at arm's length. That is, standing at the sink, you must reach out without leaving your seat to the cupboard in which plates and mugs dry, as well as to the stove on which the soup boils.
 5. If you have a small kitchen area, do not clutter it up with various accessories and massive furniture. But competent lighting and color choice will help to visually expand the room and create the illusion of spaciousness.
 6. Many people neglect the hood over the stove, believing that it only clutters up the space and does not bring any benefit. And in vain, because it is very important. Firstly, it is getting rid of odors and temperature. Secondly, it increases the service life of the kitchen, because along with the steam, particles of fat also rise up, which are very difficult to wash from surfaces, especially old ones.
 7. Do not install Of course, many housewives will now be indignant. After all, after a hard day's work, you have to spend a lot of time in the kitchen to cook dinner for the family and make preparations for breakfast. Why not combine business with pleasure? In fact, TV not only distracts from cooking, but also from the dinner itself. It has long been proven that watching programs or movies and eating at the same time is a direct path to disruption of the gastrointestinal tract and, as a result, to obesity. Watching cartoons while eating is especially dangerous for children, because this is how you provoke a change in their eating behavior from an early age.

Now you know what the different types of cuisine are called, and these simple tips will help you create a truly perfect one that will last for many years and will please the eye. For a good hostess, it is important that everything is at hand, and warmth and comfort reign in the house. After all, it is much more pleasant to drink tea in a comfortable kitchen with your family than in front of a TV in the living room.

Starting repairs in the kitchen, many housewives first of all think about finishing materials for walls and floors, how best to make an apron, what material to choose a countertop from, about a hood, furniture, etc. But when all the good stuff has already been bought, the question becomes, where to put it all in a small kitchen, and even so that it is convenient. Comfort for the hostess in the kitchen can be ensured if you use not tricky rules for arranging furniture and kitchen appliances, and make a project.

Ergonomics of the kitchen: how to plan an interior project

Ergonomic kitchen - convenient and comfortable. Even in a small area, the room is not cluttered

Regardless of the size of the kitchen area, before starting repairs, it is required to draw a plan for the future kitchen on a piece of paper. Accurately note the arrangement of everything that you want to place in this space. But do not forget about the rules for arranging furniture, the observance of which will help you comfortably spend time cooking.

The main rules for arranging furniture:

 • table top- this is the working area where the hostess spends the maximum amount of time, so this equipment is installed depending on her height. The most common height is 85 cm, but if the owners are tall, they will be uncomfortable, so there is an option with a countertop height of 90 - 100 cm. It is not difficult to determine the appropriate height. To do this, the arm is bent at the elbow by 90 * C parallel to the floor and measured 15 cm down.
 • Dinner table is selected lower than the countertop. The most common is 70 - 80 cm.
 • Gas stove. In order to install it, it takes place at least 50 cm from open balcony doors or windows, where the flame of fire can be blown out by air flow.

The option when the stove is in the corner is also not entirely suitable. The first reason is the distance of 7 cm from the wall, which is indicated in the instructions, which means that precious area is lost. Secondly, splashes that will fall on the side wall are harder to clean than on the countertop.

 • The hood is also mounted depending on the growth of the owners. The most common option is 60 - 70 cm, in height from the stove. Taller people are set 10 - 15 cm higher. But with this type of installation, the rule applies, the higher the hood, the more powerful it should be.
 • The sink for the kitchen is chosen deep, and the mixer is high, this will allow you to put larger pans in it. can be selected depending on the workplace countertops. Do not forget that the sewer riser should be no more than 2.5 meters from the sink.
 • The dishwasher will fit best near the sink, which will make it easier to connect it to communications.
 • For a refrigerator, the most suitable place is a corner, and to make it more convenient to use it without taking up extra space, you need to hang the door so that it opens towards the nearest wall (modern models of refrigerators have such a function as rehanging doors).

When choosing an option with the arrangement of furniture, you should immediately exclude the decision where the sink will be located next to the gas stove. Splashes that can fall on the hot surface of the pan will begin to spray intensively.

Triangle layout, basic principles

The rules of ergonomics for the kitchen are important, but in order to optimize the workflow in the best way, there are also the rules of the triangle. What are these rules, let's try to figure it out in more detail.

There are three vertices in the working triangle, which play a major role in zoning:

 1. top one - food storage, namely a refrigerator;
 2. the second vertex is the sink, where the products are prepared for cooking;
 3. and for cooking, of course, you need a stove, which acts as the third peak.

To achieve maximum convenience, all peaks should be close to each other, this will save the hostess from unnecessary running around the kitchen.

The location of this equipment nearby is also unacceptable, for security reasons. The most optimal distance is 60 cm.

Since the head of the entire workflow is the sink, it is she who takes pride of place in the center. On the sides of it is a refrigerator and a stove.

The action of the working triangle in different:

 • Linear kitchen. The triangle is placed on one side of the kitchen. A sink is installed in the center, and from it on both sides, a desktop and only then a refrigerator and a stove.
 • Elongated "two-row" kitchen. Since all the furniture is placed on both sides, then the tops, respectively, too. A good option would be when the sink and stove are on one side, and the refrigerator on the other. At the same time, we observe the distance between the rows, which should not be less than 120 cm.
 • U-shaped kitchen. Furniture occupies three walls, and therefore the tops are set accordingly. The middle row is a suitable place for the sink, and the opposite two for the refrigerator and stove.
 • The kitchen is L-shaped. The most common and convenient kitchen option. A sink is placed in the corner in the center, and a stove and a refrigerator on both sides of it.

L-shaped kitchen is the most convenient

Kitchen layout design tips in our video:

It is the L-shaped version of the kitchen that best zones the space, where the dining area and the cooking area are clearly visible.

Owners who have a small and narrow kitchen are often disappointed when they try to fit all modern appliances into it. To save space for the necessary equipment, you can use a few tricks. The main thing is to use every unused centimeter. Namely:

 • if possible, you can expand the window sill, which will make a wonderful countertop;
 • every centimeter between existing cabinets can be used for various shelves;
 • it is desirable to select furniture multifunctional;
 • it would be nice to have all the doors in a sliding version or to be opened by lifting up;
 • furniture that has transparent tabletops and backs will visually help to increase the space;
 • the door to the kitchen is made with an arch or a sliding option;
 • dishwasher and washing machines are best placed under the countertop, it is better to equip;
 • for a microwave, you can allocate a place behind the facade of the cabinet;
 • we use walls in height, where additional cabinets are mounted;
 • cabinets can be replaced with wall-mounted pencil cases.

Rules for a comfortable kitchen and saving space:

Rails and lockers for maximum convenience: how to independently and competently fit into the design

It is not difficult to conveniently place all kitchen furniture and utensils, if you think about what the hostess uses very often, less and less often. So, for example, it has already been determined that the sink is always installed in the center. It is important, for convenience, to correctly define .

Next to the sink there should be a cabinet for freshly washed plates, cups, spoons, etc. It is desirable that under the sink there is space for a trash can and household chemicals.

Putting things in order in the kitchen, you should think carefully, maybe many things are completely unnecessary and just take up space in vain.

Rules for competent and good use of railing:

 • near the desktop there are various hooks for working boards, ladles, ladles;
 • holders for potholders and an electric lighter are fixed near the stove, but it is better to remove various skimmers and spoons away from it in order to avoid contamination from splashes;
 • also, a holder with cells for spices is attached next to the stove;
 • paper towels and cup holders are best placed near the sink.

Accessories that are not used often are removed to the very edge of the railing or even folded into a locker.

Comfortable kitchen, modern appliances:

Zoning: the correct and convenient arrangement of furniture in the apartment

Order and maximum comfort in the kitchen can be achieved if the entire space is divided into zones that will be responsible for a specific task. Most often, the kitchen is zoned into: a working area, a dining area and a food storage area. This is important to consider if you are using .

 1. The working area is the space where food is prepared.. It is here that the appropriate kitchen utensils should be located, and not near the refrigerator or dining table.
 2. The storage area contains a refrigerator, where frozen and perishable products are saved, and a nearby pencil case. It stores products that do not require a low temperature regime, as well as various containers, bags, napkins, etc.
 3. Ideally, the dining area should be in another room., and not in the kitchen, but, unfortunately, this option is not suitable for everyone due to the small area of the apartment. For the dining area, all you need is a table and chairs.

If the work area and the storage area can be combined into one, simply by placing them side by side, then the dining table, along with chairs, will interfere with movement in the work process.

Proper kitchen layout is not only beautiful, but also very convenient. Cooking takes quite a lot of time and requires the almost constant presence of the hostess in a room where there is an open fire and hot surfaces. The safety of kitchen work and the good mood of the household depend on the successful placement of furniture, because it is no secret that delicious dishes and magnificent pies are created only in a calm and comfortable environment.

A few rules for planning a kitchen

Kitchen rooms are different: large and small, square or elongated. They always have communication pipes located in the most inappropriate places. The arrangement of furniture has to be made taking into account the specifics of each option, but in any case, it is worth adhering to the basic rules for creating a functional working interior.

The combination of safety and practicality makes the kitchen visually appealing. Even an expensive set can be placed in such a way that it loses most of its expressiveness, and in a small kitchen it takes up too much space. To avoid failures in the layout of the kitchen, you need to pay attention to the following points:

 1. The triangle rule was developed at the beginning of the last century by a practical German woman architect Greta Likhotsky. Even in a small kitchen in a city apartment, the main work points (stove, refrigerator and sink) should be located at the vertices of the triangle. The length of its side is no more than 2 m. The hostess, located at one of the working points, can easily move to the next one, turn around, bend over without difficulty.
 2. First you need to determine the place for washing. It is very tightly tied to the outlet of water and sewer pipes, so when planning a kitchen, design should start from this point.
 3. It is advisable to place the stove no closer than 40 cm from the sink. The presence of free sections of the countertop between the sink, stove and refrigerator is very convenient if you need to put or put something. Gas stoves do not need to be installed next to a window, as a draft can put out the burners and create an emergency.
 4. It is undesirable to place a tall refrigerator so that it divides the work surface (countertop) into parts. An exception may be a device, the height of which allows you to put it instead of a headset pedestal. It is most convenient to install a tall refrigerator in the corner of the room.
 5. Shelving, additional tall cabinets and similar items should not be placed in the work area. The ergonomics of space can be disturbed by excess furniture, which will interfere with movement and work.
 6. The entire kitchen space is divided into working, walk-through and dining areas. In a very small room, you can temporarily combine them with the help of folding and retractable surfaces (tabletops, seats).

Given the basic planning rules, it is necessary to draw up a plan for the future kitchen. A diagram showing the view of the room from above should be drawn to scale. It is advisable to accurately measure the room in order to avoid annoying mistakes when arranging the cabinets. By noting the location of the sink, windows and doors, you can choose good points for installing the stove and refrigerator.

Letters, islands and straight lines - types of furniture arrangement

The choice of furniture is directly affected by the area of the kitchen. In the spacious rooms of country mansions, you can easily place a set with a lot of items, and upholstered furniture in the dining area. But most citizens are deprived of such advantages and are forced to arrange everything they need on an area of about 6 m².

A convenient layout of a square kitchen, a corresponding zone in a combined room, a miniature room in a small apartment requires the implementation of basic rules. Most headsets are tailored to the needs of the consumer and help create beautiful and comfortable interiors. Typical kitchen layout options can be as follows:

 • angular, or L-shaped;
 • three-sided (U-shaped);
 • linear, or straight;
 • parallel (from 2 straight lines).

A separate place is occupied by the lineup, called the island. With this arrangement of furniture, a common working surface of a linear or angular shape is distinguished with a separate unit, where a stove, sink or cutting area can be installed. Sometimes a bar or dining area is combined with an island. In any case, types of kitchens with separate blocks imply more space than in standard apartments.

How to arrange furniture in a small kitchen?

The design of a small kitchen (6-9 m²) can be based on corner or U-shaped furniture placement. These options are the most ergonomic, allowing you to place all 3 reference points at a convenient distance. In addition, it is possible to allocate a dining area that does not intersect with the working compartment.

Household appliances and headset cabinets with this arrangement are installed along 2 or 3 adjacent walls. There is enough room in the center to move around the kitchen. Depending on the location of communications, you can install a sink in the corner of the headset, placing a refrigerator and stove on either side of it.

If desired, the refrigeration appliance can be made the boundary of the working area, and the countertop, which continues behind it in a U-shaped placement, will be used as a bar against the wall. It is very convenient to make an additional plane on it, which can be expanded if necessary, taking up part of the free space in the center. In this case, a folding or sliding table forms a full-fledged dining surface.

These types of layouts will be comfortable and beautiful only in a square kitchen, but will not be suitable for long and narrow rooms. To feel comfortable in an elongated and cramped kitchenette, you can use other ways of arranging furniture.

straight lines

The single-row system for arranging parts of the headset is very simple: all cabinets and household appliances line up along 1 wall. Usually it is opposite to the door in a narrow room. This arrangement of furniture visually masks the length of the kitchen and makes it possible to use the open space closer to the entrance, combining the passage and dining areas. The remote location of the working part of the room allows those present not to interfere with the hostess.

The obvious disadvantage of this arrangement is the impossibility of forming a working triangle. The refrigerator and stove are located on the sides of the sink, and with a sufficiently long zone, moving from point to point becomes not very convenient.

In larger kitchens (12-15 m²), it is advisable to arrange furniture in 2 rows along opposite walls. At the same time, it is possible to build a stove and a sink against one wall, and put a refrigerator and other high appliances on the opposite wall. But in a small aisle, there is no room for a dining table. The only thing that can be placed in the aisle without interference is a bar-type table along the wall.

How to increase the area of the kitchen?

If the dimensions of the kitchen are too small (5-5.5 m²), then it is very difficult to choose a set of any of the listed types. But depending on the shape of the room, it is recommended to use an angular or linear arrangement of furniture. The following methods are suitable for acquiring additional free space:

 1. Installation of a folding or sliding door. This design frees up the space that was reserved for the free movement of the sash. With a standard width of 70-90 cm, the vacated space will be quite significant (about 0.5 m²).
 2. Moving the refrigerator outside the kitchen. A large refrigeration unit is best installed elsewhere. The area occupied by it is about 0.5-0.7 m². To store a small amount of food, you can purchase a small refrigerator and build it into the kitchen as a cabinet.
 3. The corner of the headset near the door must be bevelled. This will not only avoid injury when moving, but also free up some space.
 4. Currently on sale are headsets for miniature kitchens. In their cabinets, in addition to drawers, there are retractable countertops and seats. The dining area in this case can be temporary and does not require additional space at all.

Of great importance is the color scheme of a small kitchen. Dark shades are undesirable, which visually reduce the room. But don't get carried away with white. The ideal solution would be a kitchen in cheerful, light colors with shiny surfaces. The play of color and light will create the illusion of a spacious, air-filled room.

Large kitchen design

It would seem that in a large kitchen you can install anything and arrange the furniture as you like. But the layout of a large kitchen is subject to the same rules as the smallest one. For vast spaces, neither a corner nor a parallel kitchen is suitable: one of the working points will be removed too much.

Rooms with an area of more than 16 m² must be furnished in such a way that an ergonomic workplace in the form of a triangle with sides no longer than 2 m long is preserved. For this purpose, there are separate blocks - islands and peninsulas. This interior detail can visually separate the working and dining areas, serve as a convenient place for a quick meal or as a table for snacks if guests have gathered in the combined living room.

Often heaters are built into the island block. Hobs, oven, microwave can be combined in a separate kitchen area. For convenience, a small countertop is often added to the island, placed in the dining area. This allows 2-3 family members to sit down for tea drinking without laying a large table.

The peninsula is a variation of the U-shaped kitchen adapted to a large space. A small table combined with a working area can look like a bar counter, performing its functions, and like a familiar small table. Like the island, it perfectly zones the space.

Along with island species, a different planning method is used. It is called freestanding, and one of the ideas that these types of kitchens use is that the parts of the kitchen set can be moved anywhere. Only the sink and upper cabinets remain stationary. The hostess does not have to go from the cutting board to the stove and refrigerator: the cabinet with a table top is equipped with wheels and can be easily installed next to them. After finishing work, the kitchen set can be placed both against the wall and at the border of the dining area.

Whatever the kitchen, the comfort of the hostess and family members will depend on the right furniture and its placement. Even in a small and modest, but comfortable room, you can create quite acceptable conditions for working and eating.

The kitchen is the heart of any home, its focus, hearth and center for coordinating family life. That is why the atmosphere in the kitchen should be not only beautiful, cozy, but also comfortable, practical. In order for the hearth to please you and your family, when planning it, it is necessary to take into account a lot of criteria, among which at the top of the list are functionality, comfort and ergonomics of the room. The convenience of using the kitchen is primarily determined by its successful layout. Before planning a design project, you need to think about what type of layout will be most suitable for your premises. We hope that the following recommendations will help you make the right decision, as a result of which the whole family can enjoy staying in a comfortable, functional and beautiful kitchen.

Before proceeding to a direct study of the types of layout of the kitchen space, I would like to say some useful recommendations. The choice of a kitchen layout is influenced by its location in an apartment or household, the quadrature, the number and location of door and window openings, and the layout of engineering systems. Of course, all these criteria must be taken into account before ordering furniture and household appliances. In addition, there are several rules, following which you can create a truly functional, safe and comfortable kitchen space:

 • try using the triangle rule. Its essence is simple - the main elements of the working area in the kitchen, such as a refrigerator, stove and sink, should be located at the vertices of an imaginary triangle. Then the hostess (or owner) will not have to spend extra energy and actions on moving between these main working segments. Ideally, the area of this triangle is 4-8 square meters. m;
 • The kitchen item most dependent on utilities is the sink. Decide on its location and, depending on this, distribute the rest of the work areas, segments and household appliances;
 • the installation of the plate will need to be carried out with a margin of working surfaces on both sides, about half a meter each. It is undesirable to place the stove next to a sink or window. If it is possible to transfer gas communications (if the stove is gas), it is better to carry them out immediately, before starting repairs;
 • it would be better if the refrigerator is placed in one of the corners of the kitchen, so it will be possible not to interrupt the work surfaces. Check that the open refrigerator door does not interfere with kitchen traffic;
 • it is desirable to place tall household appliances or pieces of furniture so that they are not higher than the work surfaces, this significantly reduces the size of the functional area of the kitchen.

Types of kitchen space layouts

Corner (L-shaped)

This is one of the most versatile types of layout that can suit a kitchen of almost any size, location relative to other rooms in an apartment or house. One of the most advantageous options for using this type of layout would be a medium-sized square (or close to square) kitchen. If you follow the "rule of the triangle", then the angular layout of the kitchen layout most closely follows it - household appliances and storage systems are located along adjacent walls, forming an ergonomic work area.

Among the obvious advantages of the corner layout are:

 • saving space;
 • the ability to install a dining group in the center;
 • distribution of all built-in appliances along two perpendicular walls;
 • ease of movement between the main working segments.

Among the shortcomings of the corner layout, it can only be noted that such an arrangement of working and auxiliary surfaces is not suitable for very narrow and very spacious rooms.

One of the most popular and economical options for the production of kitchen units today is the use of MDF panels with a laminated surface. All kitchen cabinet doors are equipped with closers, in which case you can refuse to install door handles. In the bottoms of cabinets of the upper tier, as a rule, lamps are built in to brightly illuminate work surfaces. From the point of view of care, the former glossy surfaces are the most practical, they practically do not show fingerprints, traces of water drops.

With the corner arrangement of kitchen cabinets and appliances, there is enough space in the center to set up a dining table with chairs or even mini-chairs.

Linear (in one row)

This arrangement of storage systems and built-in appliances is ideal for narrow spaces, small spaces. In order to comply with the “rule of the triangle” in this arrangement, it is necessary to place the sink and refrigerator on both sides of the stove or hob. Linear layout will be efficient and ergonomic. If the length of the working surface does not exceed a segment of 3.7 m.

The disadvantage of a linear layout can be called a limited cooking area, but, as mentioned earlier, for very small kitchens, such placement may be the only possible one.

In the case of the arrangement of all kitchen cabinets, with household appliances integrated into them in one row, there is a lot of space for installing a dining group. If you do not need to integrate a dishwasher, washing machine and stove into the lower tier of the kitchen set, but only two of the three components, then there may be enough space.

Some homeowners also use single-row layouts for large rooms if they want to leave as much space as possible for the dining area.

Parallel (two rows)

If your kitchen is a walk-through space and at the same time has a fairly large area, then this layout will be ideal. As a rule, in this case, a stove and a sink are located on one side, and a refrigerator, other household appliances and storage systems are in a parallel row.

Among the disadvantages of a parallel layout, one can note the impossibility of installing a dining table in the center of the room. But if your kitchen has a really large area, this problem disappears.

If your kitchen has two doors (for example, the entrance from the living room or corridor and the exit to the dining room), then the parallel layout will be ideal for storing storage systems and built-in appliances.

Sometimes a two-row layout is used for a room with one entrance, such as in the kitchen space in the photo above, where one of the walls is equipped with a window opening that does not go out into the street, but into the space of the neighboring room.

A very convenient and roomy layout is suitable for medium and large kitchens (more than 10 sq. M). In such an arrangement of kitchen segments, it is very convenient to enter the three main elements of the triangle - one for each side.

The advantages of the U-shaped layout are obvious - spacious storage systems, the ability to embed a large number of household appliances.

The disadvantage is the inability to use for small rooms.

In this U-shaped kitchen, one of the sides is not adjacent to the wall, but is itself a partition screen for the adjacent dining room. In this case, the convenient placement of work surfaces is a bar counter for the next room, where you can organize a breakfast area.

Asymmetrical layout

This is a modification of the U-shaped layout, when work surfaces and appliances are located along three walls, but not following the shape of a rectangle, but asymmetrically, in accordance with the shape of the kitchen. In some rooms that have garbage chutes or other cavities for communications, such deviations from the correct geometry of the rooms are inevitable and they will have to be taken into account when planning the location of the kitchen set.

island layout

This layout is suitable for larger than average kitchen spaces (over 15 sq. M). Often such kitchens are combined with a dining area or are part of a spacious living room. In fact, you can organize an island layout complete with any of the above types by adding a kitchen island. As you know, an island is considered to be a work surface, a dining area, a storage system, or a combination of them, placed in the center of the room, having free space on all sides of the structure. The dimensions of your island, first of all, will depend on the area of the kitchen itself, as well as on what functionality you want to give your central element. Someone, in addition to work surfaces, supplies the island with a sink, builds in a hob. At the base of the island, you can place a dishwasher or a wine cooler (perhaps both). On one side of the kitchen island, you can organize a breakfast bar (and if the kitchen area does not allow the placement of a dining table, then for other types of meals). You can extend the island with a console and get a full dining area.

Among the obvious advantages of the island layout, first of all, high functionality and the ability to create a single, efficient space in a fairly large room.

Minus one and it is obvious - not suitable for small rooms.

Sometimes the island can be not only a monolithic structure, equipped with storage systems and integrated household appliances. In this small kitchen, for example, a counter acts as an island that can be used as a dining and work area, as well as a storage system.

The island layout will help you significantly save space if there are other segments in the room - a living room or a dining room. In the base of the island, you can integrate household appliances that did not fit in the main working area of the kitchen.

Among the design projects of modern kitchen spaces, there are also those in which absolutely all work surfaces and storage systems are placed within the island, and there are no kitchen cabinets at all. The kitchen island has an integrated sink, hob, sometimes an oven and a dishwasher. Storage systems are located on one side of the base of the island, the other has an extended tabletop for comfortable placement of the dining area

The island layout is great for a minimalist kitchen interior that strives for simplicity and practicality with a high level of functionality. At the same time, the minimalist interior should be spacious enough, free to move.

peninsular layout

This is a modified modification of the island layout, in which the kitchen island is combined with one of the sides of the work areas located against the wall. As a result, a certain protrusion is formed, which serves to zoning the working and dining areas.

The advantages and disadvantages of the peninsular layout almost completely repeat the characteristics of the island-type arrangement of kitchen segments. But the peninsular scheme is suitable for smaller spaces, due to the fact that it is more compact.

In a peninsular layout, your dining area (which sits behind the island counter) is far enough away from the worktops and stovetop. But at the same time, all the furniture and appliances are compact enough to talk about the rational use of the space provided for the kitchen.

Not fixed layout

This is a free layout, in which the cutting surfaces located on cabinets, storage systems, counters are all equipped with wheels that allow you to change the layout as many times as you like by moving the working segments. This new trend in the organization of the kitchen space is quite convenient and allows you to modify the interior without much effort, but it requires really spacious rooms.

How to furnish a very small kitchen

For some very small rooms, you will need to consider moving the storage systems outside the kitchen, into a hallway or interior space. Some homeowners take the refrigerator out of the small kitchen, embedding it into the hallway furniture ensemble, for example. In this case, there is no need to talk about the convenience of moving, but the small area of the kitchen leaves its mark on the possibility of arranging furniture and household appliances.

Of course, with such an arrangement of kitchen segments, there can be no question of placing a dining area within a small room, but it will be very successful to integrate all the necessary work surfaces and household appliances into a small kitchen area.

In addition to a suitable layout, in small rooms it is important to use other techniques that visually expand the space - a light palette, glass and mirror elements, minimal decor, strict lines and shapes.

Among the variety of kitchen layouts, how can you choose the one that fits into the parameters of your kitchen in the most efficient and practical way? There are several practical recommendations from experts in ergonomic arrangement of space:

 1. draw up a detailed plan of your kitchen space, on which apply the exact dimensions of the room, mark all door and window openings, the location of ventilation systems, plumbing, gas pipelines (if any), sewers, placement of sockets (existing and planned);
 2. use the services of special programs that will help distribute furniture, appliances, cutting surfaces and auxiliary items in terms of a kitchen of your size. This is much more efficient than hand-drawn diagrams on sheets of paper and does not require a lot of time. In such programs, you can immediately try to apply color solutions, consider the combinatorics of wall, ceiling and floor decoration, their combination with the selected range of furniture and household appliances;
 3. in some salons for the production of kitchen sets there are free services of professional designers who will help you decide not only on the layout, but also on the detailed study of all the key elements of the kitchen space. Usually such services are provided to potential customers of kitchen furnishing systems.
