Mixtures for grouting ceramics in the pool. Pool waterproofing. How to waterproof the reinforced concrete bowl of the pool Overview of samples of grouting compounds for ceramic tiles in the pool

In this article, we will look at the most popular modern materials for building a swimming pool.

Waterproofing for the pool. Or how and what is the best way to waterproof the pool.

Now on the net you can find many different materials on how to build a pool, as well as what materials can be used to waterproof the pool.

We won't cover composite pools here as this article focuses on traditional reinforced concrete pools that end up being lined with ceramic tiles or glass mosaics. In this publication, we will analyze the technology of pool construction and the most modern materials for installing a waterproofing system and laying tiles or mosaics.

So, the construction of a swimming pool bowl can be divided into three large stages:

  • Making a pool bowl
  • Pool waterproofing system
  • Finishing tiles or mosaics

Each stage consists of a specific sequence of work, which we will analyze in detail below.

Making a pool bowl

Creating a swimming pool bowl is a very important step. The service life of the entire pool largely depends on the quality of this basic element.

Reinforced concrete pool bowl is made by pouring mortar into the formwork with reinforcement. The grade of concrete must be at least M300. After the manufacture of the elements of the bowl - the floor and walls, special safety elements are laid in the places of their connection -, or, the so-called. Such elements, when in contact with water, expand up to 800%, thereby preventing the movement of water outside the pool bowl. Also, hydrophilic materials are used for additional insulation of various embedded elements - overflows, lighting, etc.

It is important to remember that the full set of strength of reinforced concrete elements is regulated by GOST 10180-90; GOST 27006-86; GOST 18105-86; GOST 12730.5-84; GOST 10181.1-81; GOST 10182.2-81; GOST 10183.3-81 GOST 10184.4-8, as well as SNiP 2.08.02-89 and SP 31-113-2004. Those. all elements of the bowl before subsequent work must be aged for at least six months.

Leveling the surfaces of the pool bowl

Before applying leveling mortars to the walls and floor of the pool bowl, it is necessary to completely remove construction dirt from the surfaces, and also clean the walls and floor from the remnants of "cement milk", formwork lubricants and other contaminants. This is done mechanically. After this, the surface of the pool bowl is treated with a primer, for example:

  • mapei
  • Litokol
  • Kerakoll
  • Index

After the soil has dried, we proceed to apply the leveling mortar.

For the manufacture of a solution that will level the surfaces of the pool bowl, it is necessary to use special plasticizers, which will significantly strengthen the structure, and most importantly, give the "walls" and "floor" of the pool elasticity, which will avoid cracking of the bases when the ambient temperature fluctuates. For these purposes, you can use, for example, latex, which is added to water when preparing a solution of cement and sand. A mixture of sand and cement must have a strength of at least M300. More information about the preparation of solutions using latex "Idrokol X20-m" can be found in the technical data sheet of the material. The solution created using the plasticizer "Idrokol X20-m" when applied with a layer of more than 20 mm, is additionally reinforced with a cell of 5 mm and a density of at least 150 g/m2. Such a solution hardens for approximately 7 days for every 1 cm of thickness.

If additional finishing alignment of the walls and floor of the bowl with a thin layer is necessary, then for such work high-strength elastic putties are required, for example or. Also for these purposes, you can use a mixture of latex. The recesses in the bowl, in which various elements (overflows, lighting fixtures, etc.) are laid, are leveled with a non-shrinking anchoring compound (for example, , , ), which is poured into the formwork in such a way as to completely expel air from the formwork, filling the entire space of the recess around the element . . Before pouring the anchoring composition, a hydrophilic profile or bentonite cord is laid around the embedded elements. After the anchor has completely hardened, you can begin to create a waterproofing "pie".

Swimming pool waterproofing

Before proceeding with the waterproofing of the bases of the bowl, it is necessary to remove all construction dirt from the surface of the walls and floor of the bowl and moisten the bases.

At the moment, the best and most popular materials for waterproofing the walls and floor of the pool are the following cement compositions:

  • mapei
  • Litokol
  • (old name "Idrobuild Eco") Kerakoll
  • Kerakoll
  • Index
  • Index

As well as ready-made water-based waterproofing:

  • Index

The technology of using these materials is almost the same. First, the first layer of waterproofing is applied to the surface. Alkali-resistant material with a density of at least 150 g/m2 must be laid in fresh waterproofing material. This is necessary to give the necessary strength and integrity of the structure. The mesh is laid with an overlap of 10 cm. In places where walls are connected to each other, walls are connected to the floor, as well as in other adjacent places (for example, steps, columns or other underwater structures), an elastic waterproofing tape is placed in a fresh waterproofing layer, which additionally insures the system in places where there is the greatest the likelihood of cracking. The most effective and reliable waterproofing tapes:

  • Kerakoll
  • Litokol
  • Index
  • mapei

To reinforce the internal and external corners of the bowl structure, it is convenient to use ready-made products, for example, external corner and internal corner.

After the first layer of waterproofing has completely hardened (or dried), the entire bowl is covered with a second layer of waterproofing mixture. All reinforcing elements (reinforcing mesh and tapes) must be completely covered with waterproofing. The recommended total thickness of the two layers should generally not exceed 4mm, but should also not be thinner than 3mm. If you apply too thick a layer of waterproofing, this will reduce the elasticity of the system, and if it is too thin, the system in this place will not have the necessary strength.

After the second layer of waterproofing is completely dry (gained strength), you need to test the tightness of the waterproofing coating. To do this, the pool is filled with water, and for two weeks they observe changes in the water level, marking each change in writing.

Laying tiles and mosaics in a swimming pool

After the waterproofing coating of the pool bowl has successfully passed hydro-tests, you can start laying the finishing coating - glazed ceramic tiles or glass mosaics. Since the waterproofing coating does not absorb water at all, and in the pool there are extreme loads on the tiles, ordinary cement-sand tile adhesives will not be reliable materials for such work.

Only super-elastic reinforced adhesives are suitable for gluing tiles in the pool - these are cement-based adhesives that withstand deformation of the base at least C2, according to EN 12004 and S1, according to EN 12002. Such adhesives have an extremely high degree of wetting, therefore they stick to the waterproofing like a suction cup. And the adhesion force of such adhesives is such that in order to tear off a 100x250mm tile from the base, a force of 2500kg must be applied. For ordinary tiles use gray cement based adhesive and for glass mosaic use white tile adhesive.

Here are the most popular cement adhesives for gluing pool tiles:

Gray tile adhesive:

  • Kerakoll
  • Index
  • Lugato
  • + additive Litokol
  • + Mapei additive

White Adhesive Adhesive for Tile:

  • Kerakoll
  • Index
  • + additive
  • + Mapei additive

Also ideal for laying any tiles in the pool are reactive polyurethane tile adhesives in white, such as:

  • Litokol
  • mapei
  • Kerakoll
  • Index

Grouting between tiles in a swimming pool

Grouting mosaics and tiles in the pool is a finishing and very responsible process. It is the grout that is the first stronghold of the waterproofing system, which also includes tiles, tile adhesive and waterproofing material. Properly done pool grouting will greatly extend the life of the entire pool and create an airtight seal that will protect the tile adhesive from chlorine or sea water.

For grouting tiles in a swimming pool, either a flexible reinforced cementitious grout or a reactive epoxy grout can be used.

Cement grouts are a cheaper, but less reliable and durable solution. Since cement grouts are porous, it is in the joints of cement grout that mold formations and hard-to-remove dirt can most often be found. At the same time, every solid European manufacturer of construction chemicals has a cement grout in its assortment, which is recommended for use in swimming pools. These are elastic grouts with dry latex in the composition, or grout + latex additive systems.

Grouting is the filling of the joints of a tile or mosaic on a lined base with a grout mixture and the design of the adhesive surface in the joints by giving it a convex, flat or concave transverse profile. The term of the same name, grout, is the material itself, the grout mixture used to arrange the joints of ceramics.

Grouting joints is a responsible finishing operation of a complex of works on finishing the pool with tiles or mosaics, on which the solidity, and hence the strength, of the ceramic shell of the bowl depends. In addition, the success of the solution of the artistic component of the pool lining with ceramics depends on the aesthetics of this final stage of work.

It is quite possible to finish the tiles or mosaics of a small-capacity pool in a country house or a personal plot, knowing the production technology of all stages of this work and the requirements for the grout composition, therefore, we will consider the adhesive mixtures used for this in more detail, breaking the review into its component parts:

  • requirements for grouting compounds for swimming pools;
  • types of grout suitable for finishing bowls;
  • cement-based mixtures;
  • compositions based on epoxy resins;
  • review of specific samples.

Requirements for grouts for ceramics in the pool

The operating conditions of the ceramic lining of the pools are specific. This is a long contact with open water, exposure to salts and chlorine, temperature fluctuations and other adverse factors.

Therefore, the adhesive composition for arranging seams in the pool must have the following properties:

  • strength and hardness - to counteract the pressure exerted by water;
  • a high degree of adhesion is a condition necessary to ensure the solidity of the cladding;
  • elasticity - a characteristic of the adhesive necessary to neutralize the deformations of the pool bowl by grouting after the mixture has cured;
  • water, thermal and frost resistance - the qualities necessary to counteract prolonged contact with water, freezing and temperature fluctuations;
  • resistance to chemicals, salts and chlorine - inertness to salts dissolved in water, including marine, household chemicals and chlorine used for disinfection;
  • antifungal activity - the ability to counteract the formation of a fungus on its surface in a favorable environment of warm water;
  • environmental friendliness - the absence of any toxic emissions into the environment;
  • aesthetics - a well-thought-out color addition, contrasting or tonal, to an artistic solution for pool decoration.

All of the above characteristics in the complex have grout mixtures, the name of which includes the words "Pool" or "Aqua". If these words are not on the package, then the material is chosen based on the description and instructions for use.

Types of grout for arranging seams of pool ceramics

Grout is a material without which, taking into account the specifics of the operation of the structure, it is impossible to make ceramic cladding that meets technical, sanitary, hygienic and aesthetic requirements. Therefore, the sealing of the joints must be impeccable - to the full depth, and the material - appropriate to the features of operation. Not all grout mixtures are suitable for arranging ceramic seams in pools. Even expensive compounds that are not designed for the operating conditions of the pool may be unsuitable and lead to the need for costly repairs to the arrangement of the seams. Therefore, we consider grouts designed specifically for use in pools.

Cement-based grouts

For arranging the seams of the lining of small pools for personal use, cement-based grouts are most often used, which meet the necessary requirements and have a wide range of prices. Cement-sand mixtures for finishing bowls are unsuitable, since they do not allow to achieve a smooth seam surface and are used with a joint width of more than 3 mm, which is unacceptable for a pool.

The disadvantage of cement compositions is poor resistance to chemicals, therefore, dry mixtures to enhance the water resistance of seams and the tightness of the bowl are closed only with an aqueous solution of latex or special ready-made latex additives, for example, Litokol Idrostuk.

To facilitate the control of the sanitary condition of the joints for the appearance of fungus, white or close to white mixtures are used. In the case of glass or smalt mosaics, the grout must definitely be white, otherwise the translucent chips may unpredictably change their color.

Moisture-resistant cement mixtures Ceresit CE 40 Aquastatic, Ceresit CE-33 SUPER, Litokol Litochrom 3-15 can serve as examples of the correct choice of material for grouting.

Cement compositions, with their strength, still allow, if it is necessary to produce a spot repair of the finish, without much difficulty to remove glue from the joints. The installation of new ceramics in place of the removed defective tiles is also simple, since the use of the cement mixture does not require the drying of the base, which has been in water for months.

To enhance the waterproofing characteristics of the bowl located above the dwelling, cement-based grouts can be periodically impregnated with special compounds, having previously cleaned the joints from salt deposits.

Reactive resin joint fillers

Despite the high quality of cement mixtures, adhesives based on epoxy resins surpass them in all characteristics, except for flammability (not relevant in the pool). Therefore, the feasibility of using epoxy grouts for arranging tile joints in pools is indisputable, however, one should be prepared for the fact that the price of such mixtures is several times higher than cement-based grouting material. In addition, working with any epoxy adhesives requires the performer to have certain skills and dexterity.

Among many other mixtures based on epoxy resins, pool grouts Litokol Litochrom Starlike C.290 Travertine, Litokol Epoxystuk X90, Index Fugopox AB have proven themselves well.

And yet, the use of epoxy grout when finishing bowls has its drawbacks:

  • short period of mobility of the mixed mixture;
  • the difficulty of removing excess glue from tiles and, especially, mosaics;
  • the difficulty of drying the base for the production of spot repairs.

In addition, there are disadvantages arising from the advantages:

  • high quality leads to high cost;
  • high adhesion and strength makes it difficult to dismantle defective tiles in the production of spot repairs to finishes.

Overview of samples of grouts for ceramic tiles in the pool

- elastic water-repellent cement grout, available in 32 colors, for sealing tile joints up to 10 mm wide. The use of Aquastatic and MicroProtect technologies in the manufacture of the mixture provides the adhesive with high hydrophobic characteristics, active antifungal properties and resistance to contamination. The mixture is heat and frost resistant (operating temperature from -50 to +70 degrees), after curing it is resistant to deformation due to the high degree of elasticity.

- cement-based grout with the addition of synthetic resins, modifying additives and pigment, used in pools for sealing tile and mosaic joints. The adhesive has high flexural and compressive strength, due to low moisture absorption it has a high degree of frost resistance. To improve the technical characteristics, the dry composition is mixed with an aqueous solution of the Fugolastic polymer additive.

epoxy resin-based grout for filling and decorating pool tiles or mosaics, providing complete moisture tightness of the joints. The mixture is inert to the effects of alkalis and acids, resistant to the formation of fungus and mold, not susceptible to ultraviolet radiation. The glue has a high degree of adhesion and strength, does not need daily maintenance and is environmentally friendly.

Two-component epoxy grout in 4 colors for sealing tile and mosaic joints after tiling fresh and sea water bowls.

The glue is heat and frost resistant (operating temperature from -20 to +100 degrees), has high adhesion, strength and water resistance, is resistant to ultraviolet radiation, and is environmentally friendly.

Conclusion

The list of mixtures recommended for use can be continued, but every day manufacturers offer new types of grouts, the characteristics of which are higher than previously recommended materials. Therefore, it is much more important to remember not the names of the compositions, but the list of requirements that the adhesive must meet, and then the correct choice of material is guaranteed.

Many people want to equip a small pool on their suburban area. When lining it, a problem arises: how to protect the materials used from water penetration, exposure to aggressive media and ultraviolet radiation? For this case, use waterproof grout, which allows you to minimize the negative consequences for the cladding during operation.

What qualities should grout for tiles in the pool have?

Pool grout should have the following properties:

  • waterproof. Both the adhesive and the grout need complete protection against water penetration, otherwise a leaky seam can lead to a quick destruction of the cladding;
  • resistance to ultraviolet radiation. In the warm season, the outdoor pool will be constantly under ultraviolet rays. If the grout is selected without taking into account this factor, it may adversely affect the state of the seam, it may crack or change its native color;
  • strength. It must be understood that structures in open space will be subjected to mechanical stress: an accidentally fallen branch or pebble should not damage the cladding;
  • aesthetics. Everyone wants their pool to look beautiful. Therefore, the grout for tiles in the pool should be combined with the color of the tile or mosaic, be presentable;
  • resistance to aggressive environments. This is especially true for public pools, the water in which is chlorinated. In some pools, I fill in sea water, the salts of which can also wash out the seams, so the usual grout for wet rooms will not work in this case;
  • resistance to the formation and spread of mold and fungi.

What waterproof pool grout should I use?

Since tile adhesive and pool grout must meet many similar requirements, it is common to use them as a set from the same manufacturer. Then it will be possible not to worry about the quality of each of the facing materials separately. For pools, a two-component cement grout or epoxy is used.

A two-component pool grout is diluted with a latex plasticizer, which makes the mixture resistant to moisture penetration. After applying the solution for greater sealing, moisture-proof impregnation is additionally applied.

Conventional cement coatings for swimming pools are not suitable due to their weak water-repellent qualities. It is worth using either a two-component cement grout for tiles in the pool, or epoxy.

Epoxy grout for wet rooms will look richer and more saturated, since it is presented in more than 4,000 colors and shades on the building materials market, and it will not be difficult to choose the option that best suits mosaics or tiles. Epoxy-based coating has excellent technical and operational characteristics, however, the high quality of such a grout for pool joints is reflected in its rather high cost.

Ceresit CE 40 Aquastatic is a flexible, water-repellent grout for covering tiled surfaces. The width of the seams in this case should be no more than 10 mm. The material has a water-repellent effect, protects the lining from damage by fungus. Available palette - 32 colors. The grout is harmless to people and pets, elastic, resistant to abrasion and deformation, retains color for a very long time, is not afraid of frost and heat - can be used for underfloor heating. The treated surface will be perfectly smooth, and it can be used both inside and outside buildings.

Grout is suitable for different materials - you can fill the seams between glass tiles, stone, traditional ceramic. You can process both floors and walls. Holds well on substrates prone to deformation - drywall, wood slabs. You can also use it in an outdoor pool. Constantly high humidity and temperature fluctuations will not harm it, so Ceresit CE 40 Aquastatic in the shower or in the kitchen will also show its best side. There is only one limitation: seams in the corners and expansion gaps, as well as seams in places near plumbing, are recommended to be filled with another branded composition - silicone.

How to use Ceresit CE 40 Aquastatic

The grout must not react with the adhesive that holds the tile. If there is cement mortar under the cladding, you must wait at least a week after laying. The entire base under the grout must be dry, and the edges of the joints must be cleaned of glue, any stains and dust. Before applying along the edges of the tile, it is worth walking with a damp sponge - then the material will grab better. An important point: the seams should be the same depth.

Water for the mixture needs warm (from +15 to +20 ° C) - measure how much is needed and add dry powder there, stirring. The finished mixture should not have lumps. Stir it with a mixer or a drill, then let it ripen for 5 minutes. and interfere again. The entire prepared volume must be used up in 2 hours.

The grout is applied with a rubber spatula, then the surface is wiped with a wrung out sponge; when the plaque on the tile dries up - use a dry cloth, but no later than 8 hours. And within a week, water should not fall on the surface. What color and shade the grout will eventually have depends on many circumstances: the moisture content of the base, the volume of mixing water, the uniformity of drying, the correct smoothing of the seams.
