The main material for all concrete work is cement. The strength of the structure, no matter how large it is, depends on its brand. Flower pots are no exception. In order for self-sculpted cement pots to last longer, it is best to take cement grade M400 or M500. To make a flower container, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • cement;
  • seeded sand, fine;
  • containers of different sizes and desired shapes;
  • moss, peat, colored plastic granules (aquarium soil), shells, pebbles, etc.;
  • drill with mixer nozzle.

If there is no suitable container for pouring concrete mortar, then you can make any form with your own hands from a durable moisture-proof material - plywood, tin, thick cardboard.

The larger the finished product, the more durable material you need to choose, because concrete is a very heavy substance.

Prepare a mortar from 1 part of M400-M500 cement and 3 parts of sand. If desired, decor in the form of a shell, colored granules, etc. can be added to the mixture. It is necessary to pour the mixture first onto the bottom of a larger container, straighten the bars and install a smaller form on them, trying to equalize the gaps between it and the large container. Concrete should be poured into the gaps between the forms and compacted a little. Gradually, compacting each layer, continue pouring until the gaps are filled to the desired height. Leave the product to set for 12-14 hours. After that, it can be carefully removed from the larger container and the bars removed, cleaning the drainage holes. If you want to leave the inner mold inside the pot, you will need to cut through the bottom of the pot over these holes.

The outer surface of the container must be cleaned with a drill attachment for grinding (round hard brush with metal bristles). If there were decorative elements in the concrete, this will help to show their structure. With a brush, you need to process all the edges and corners of the container, eliminating burrs and irregularities. After that, the flowerpot can be painted or decorated with ceramic and glass elements by attaching them to ordinary tile adhesive.

Products from hypertufa

Hypertufa artificial stone is the same concrete, but with slightly different fillers. The binder can be taken as ordinary M500, as well as white or colored cement. Only the appearance of the finished product will depend on this, since the strength of the listed materials is almost the same.

Instead of the sand used for the usual concrete mix, agroperlite is used to create hypertufa - a volcanic mineral that can absorb water in large quantities, gradually giving it to plants. You can buy it in horticultural organizations if you want to make cement pots with your own hands using this technology. Instead of perlite, you can take vermiculite or fine expanded clay - in each case it will be a different texture of the material and a completely different visual effect.

Another necessary component of the mixture is high-moor peat, used in horticulture as a material that gives the soil porosity and breathability. Peat also has a high ability to absorb moisture and easily release it in case of increased dryness of the environment.

To give strength to hypertufa pots, a wire frame is also needed if the flowerpot is of a large capacity (5 liters or more). For small pots, you can add a thin synthetic fiber directly into the solution, cut into pieces of 5-7 cm. The pot is made in the following steps:

  1. 1 Mix the dry components of the solution (2 parts of cement, 1 part of perlite and 2 parts of peat) and add enough water to make the mass look like softened plasticine.
  2. 2 Line the mold with plastic wrap. The formation of wrinkles should not be avoided - they will give the outer surface of the flowerpot a resemblance to natural stone.
  3. 3 In some places, to give a decorative and aged look, you need to lay pieces of ordinary dry moss. This material will look organic on a flowerpot in the garden.
  4. 4 Put a little mass on the bottom of the container and stretch it with your hands, forming a layer about 5 cm thick. Make holes for drainage.
  5. 5 Adding a little concrete mixture, sculpt the walls of the pots according to the shape, raising them to the desired height. If a wire frame is needed, it should be installed at this stage and the mix should be applied further by dipping the wire into the concrete. Treat the edges and the inner surface with a damp sponge, leveling it. Cover the finished structure with polyethylene and stand for several days until it becomes light.
  6. 6 With a hard metal brush or a nozzle on a drill, treat the surface, revealing its microrelief.

It is better not to paint such a pot, since its surface is very similar to natural stone, but if desired, you can shade the depressions a little and brighten the convex places if the product is made of white cement.

A hypertufa pot weighs a little less than a cast concrete pot. But when sculpting a large container, it is best to perform all operations immediately at the installation site, since the transfer may not be possible.
