If it is decided to cut the barrel in half, similar actions are performed, the only difference will be the passage of the cut line through the end of the container.

Frame creation

The frame, or stand, should be at a height that is comfortable for the wearer. The best option is considered to be 0.9-1 m (counting together with the barbecue), but each person has their own preferences. There are many options for frame design:

  • Crosspiece of two rectangular frames connected in the middle part.
  • Semicircles with legs in which the barrel fits.
  • Conventional supports connected by a rectangular horizontal frame, inside which a barbecue (brazier) is installed.

Lid

The design is very simple, which eliminates the need for drawings / sketches. At the initial stage, a hatch is cut out of the barbecue barrel:

  • width - 5–10 cm must be retreated from each edge to ensure the rigidity of the brazier frame;
  • height - about 1/3 of the circumference of the barrel.

The cut out part becomes a lid, hinged to one side of the longitudinal horizontal cut. Hinges can be welded, screwed or riveted to cover and body parts.

For ease of use, a handle made of non-combustible material is mounted on the lid. If necessary, a deadbolt can be added to protect against spontaneous opening in winter during snowfall.

Attention! A thin-walled barrel after cutting out the hatch usually loses its spatial geometry. Therefore, along the edges of the cut from the inside, the body of the barrel is reinforced with a corner, on the shelf of which a barbecue grill will later be laid.

For a uniform layer of coals, a cylindrical surface is unsuitable by default. Therefore, at a distance of 10-15 cm from the convex bottom of the brazier, it is necessary to lay the grate. It performs several functions:

  • provides a flat surface for coals;

It's just that the barbecue pipe is first muffled on both sides with parts cut from sheet steel. The operational resource is much higher than that of a barrel, since in this case the thickness of the metal is greater. Even when cutting out the manhole cover, the spatial geometry is preserved, the structure does not need to be reinforced with a corner.

With a sufficient amount of thick-walled rolled metal, a workpiece of complex shape is cut out of the pipe with their own hands. The pipe should be 1.8–2 m long, it must be installed vertically on the end, and the cut line should be drawn at an angle from the level of 1 m to the upper opposite part of the structure (as in the photo below).

With an independent cut with an angle grinder (angle grinder), it is very difficult to mark the cut line, so you should first draw a template on paper / cardboard.

Additional elements are located at different levels:

  • barbecue grill - at the lower edge of the cut, several corners are welded along the diameter to fix it;
  • the grate is 15–20 cm lower than the previous grate; corners are also attached to it around the perimeter from the inside;
  • ash door - just below the grate on any convenient side, welded on hinges to the body, equipped with a valve and a handle;
  • plug - since the body of the pipe serves as a stand for the brazier, the ash compartment turns out to be too large, so the structure is jammed under the ash pan door.

Attention! A chimney with this option is not used by barbecues, as it drastically reduces the aesthetics of the perception of the structure. Instead, a round or square hood is usually mounted.

It will not work to close the cut part of the pipe, so a standard round cover is used, which is installed instead of a barbecue grill.

  1. countertop - usually fastened with brackets in front of the lid of the brazier;
  2. shelves - hung on the sides near the bottom of the barrel;
  3. woodpile - located under the barrel, protected from behind by a visor;
  4. canopy / visor - made of non-combustible materials on separate racks;
  5. hood - usually with natural draft in the form of a conical or pyramidal structure made of galvanized.

Metal barbecues are decorated with twisted, forged elements. Less often, the original configuration is attached to the body of the structure. For example, when using a thick-walled pipe, the owner can beat the design in the form of a mortar gun or an old steam locomotive. A ready-made decor option is the countertop of a used sewing machine, usually decorated with forging.

Thus, if there is a large diameter pipe or a standard 200 l barrel, a home craftsman can build a barbecue with his own hands. In this case, the requirements from the above instructions must be observed.
