Do-it-yourself shelf drawings. Wall shelves whose photos are amazing: an overview of the best models of shelves and racks in the interior. Wall Shelf Design Ideas - Video

The modern world with future technologies and high-speed Internet allows us to devote less and less time to such an important activity as reading books. If you consider yourself one of the fans of paper real publications, you probably thought more than once about how to equip in which you could store all your books. And it is much more pleasant when this shelf is created by you personally. A do-it-yourself bookshelf is an easy task, but requires minimal tool skills. We will give you some tips on how you can create such a stand for your collection.

A few tips on how to make a bookshelf with your own hands

Where to begin

Many will say that the easiest way is to go and buy a ready-made bookcase for yourself. But this way you lose some of its exclusivity, because you yourself will become a designer. If you are immediately at a dead end when choosing a shape or color, answer yourself a few questions:

  • why do you need a shelf? To change the interior? To fit all your books? To decompose on it only books of a certain series or author? Or just to let your guests see the entire collection?
  • How many "floors" will the bookshelf have? Here you need to accurately consider the dimensions of the floors and the thickness of the base itself.
  • How many books do you plan to put on the shelf? The answer to this question depends on the material from which you will create the shelf. After all, if you plan to pile on it many publications, you need to create a solid foundation.
  • Where will the shelf be attached? There are two options - against the wall or. Do you need additional accessories and mechanisms?
  • And last but not least, the final design of the shelf. You have probably already imagined it more than once, so you can safely make a choice.

As in any business, here you will need materials and tools. As for the source materials, it all depends on what kind of shelf you still decide to make.

fabric shelf

In order for you to have such a hinged shelf in your apartment, you will need:

  • a pair of pipes of a small radius (useful);
  • mounting brackets;
  • the cloth;
  • seamstress tools.

First, sew the edges of the fabric on the sewing machine. Install brackets on the wall, attach pipes to them. You just have to roll the ends of the fabric into a ring, the diameter of which will be enough to pass a pipe into it. Put the fabric on the pipes and that's it - the shelf is ready.

For such an unusual shelf you will need:

  • thick rope or rope (several pieces of different lengths);
  • wooden boards;
  • fasteners with which installation will be carried out;
  • drill, drill;
  • paint, varnish or polish.

Take your boards, which will then turn into wall shelves, and make holes at equal distances from the edges. Fix a rope or thick rope to the ceiling, then thread its ends through the holes in the board. Fix the board for a while and tie a knot under each hole. That's all. Make a few more, and you will have original exclusive decor elements.

Classic wooden shelf

Let's take a closer look at the process of creating a standard book shelf. For this you will need:

  • board (width - 20 cm, thickness - 2 cm);
  • plywood (hardboard, thickness - up to 5 mm);
  • drill, drill;
  • jigsaw (preferably electric);
  • hacksaw;
  • screwdriver, self-tapping screws;
  • level or square;
  • screws for furniture, plugs to them.

As you understand, instead of a wooden board, it is quite possible to use any materials, such as chipboard or plastic.

Getting Started

First of all, free the workplace from all unnecessary. It is better that nothing is left in the work area except the tool and material.

Take the necessary measurements and sketch out a drawing of the future shelf. Try to be as accurate as possible in your calculations. After that, you can start sawing the main material. Here you will need a jigsaw. If you are not sure that you will do everything right with your own hands, you can order such a service at the places where the tree is sold. If you decide, then with the help of a square, outline the line of the file. First, attach it to one side of the board and draw a perpendicular line to the opposite end. This procedure must be done on all sides of the board.

Make sure that the jigsaw or hacksaw moves strictly along the line, since this part will be the end of the shelf. Then measure from it a distance equal to the height of the shelf - this will be its side wall. All cuts must be cleaned with sandpaper. So you save them roughness and bumps.

Next, you need to make holes for attaching the side boards to the base. To do this, measure a distance from the edge of the side board, which is equal to half of its thickness, step back from the perpendicular edge of 5 cm and drill a through hole. Do the same on the other side. Use a drill that has a smaller diameter than the screws.

To determine the hole depth for the top and bottom bookshelves, subtract the thickness of the board from the length of the screw. Now measure the centers of the holes on these boards and follow the procedure. Then it's up to the small - using a screwdriver, assemble all the details of the shelf into one design.

If you want to create a shelf with a back wall, use plywood or fiberboard for this. For aesthetic reasons, it is better to glue it from the inside with a film or self-adhesive paper. You can install such a bookcase on the wall using self-tapping screws or small nails.

Treat your new shelf with mastic or varnish. Try decoupage or craquelure. You can also decorate the shelf with doors. They are usually made of wood, plastic or glass. They also protect books from moisture and dust.

After the first attempt, try to make the shelf more complicated - a large multi-tiered, corner or asymmetrical shelf will become an original element of the interior of any room.

You should not buy into the low cost of modern particle boards. When they are created, toxic elements are used that harm the human body. If you have no other choice, then process the ends of the shelf with melamine edging. To do this, heat the wood, attach an edge to it and walk on top with a hot iron. After that, the excess parts of the edge can be easily removed with scissors or a knife. Thus, you will save yourself from the harmful effects of toxins, and the shelf will become more neat in appearance.

If you are making a bookcase in , choose only natural wood, as it is environmentally friendly. The finished design can be decorated with figures of animals or cartoon characters. Such a process can be a great leisure activity for you and your baby. Try decorating a shelf together. To do this, take cardboard, acrylic paints and double-sided tape.

From the foregoing, we can conclude how to make a bookshelf with your own hands. To do this, you only need to have imagination and desire. If you yourself have ever tried to create such a shelf, share your comments under this article.

An excellent decoration of any interior will be light, neat, interesting wall shelves, which are an excellent alternative to bulky cabinet furniture. Assembled from specially purchased ready-made blocks, or made from improvised materials available in every home, these products will bring comfort and originality to any room.

Beautiful shelves will find their application in any of the rooms of the apartment, whether it is a kitchen, living room, bedroom, hallway or bathroom. With their help, the room will look more habitable, interesting, there will be additional storage space for any useful gizmos.

At the beginning, decide for what purposes the wall structure will be used, this will help you not to be mistaken with the required dimensions and strength of the device.

A shelf for heavy items, such as books, an aquarium, collectible dishes, potted plants, should be as reliable as possible, made of solid materials.

You can find a wide range of wall shelves at attractive prices in the First Furniture store.

A shelf in the bathroom for storing various cosmetics and bath accessories may not be so strong, but be sure to keep in mind that the materials for its manufacture must be moisture resistant.

If the wall shelf will be used only as an original art object for interior decoration, to perform the function of decorating a room, it is not supposed to exhibit objects and things on it, then any, even the most fragile materials, can be used for its construction.

Therefore, before starting the shelf design process, be sure to consider the following details:

  • full load on the structure;
  • fastening method;
  • compliance of the materials used with the purpose of the premises in which the installation is planned;
  • style and design of the product;
  • functional.

Types of shelves

Having wondered how to make a wall shelf with your own hands, first decide which type of future design will be more suitable for the chosen room, will fully comply with the assigned functions and your preferences.

Based on the design features, the shelves are:

  • closed and fully open;
  • linear and l-shaped;
  • with or without side railings;
  • through, or with a rear limiter;
  • single-tier or having several levels;
  • rounded and rectangular;
  • unusual shape, steeply inclined, diamond-shaped;
  • limited on all sides or consisting of one base, etc.

If you pay attention to the materials used for manufacturing, then wall shelves can be:

  • glass;
  • with elements of a mirror surface;
  • wooden;
  • made of MDF, chipboard, plywood;
  • polymer and plastic;
  • combined - using several types of raw materials.

Think about what materials will be the most preferable for self-construction of a shelf, more wear-resistant and reliable, and choose the option that suits you with all its characteristics.

Having studied numerous photos of the shelves made by yourself, you can choose the option that suits your taste the most and take it as a sample, try to make the most similar design, adapted specifically to your apartment.

Let's start designing

After you have decided on the model of the wall shelf, found and prepared all the necessary materials, it's time to move on to the creative process, that is, the creation of the product.

It is best to adhere to the following algorithm of actions:

Draw a rough sketch on paper, indicating the planned dimensions of the shelf on it, or even better - a full-fledged sketch of how the future shelf will look on the wall, indicate its dimensions.

Decide on the type of fastening, whether it will be building dowels, anchors, brackets that can withstand heavy loads, or the shelf will be mounted on a flexible base, for example, flagella, braided ropes, belts - these fasteners are only suitable for lightweight, used mainly as a decorative element , shelves.

Carry out the cutting of materials according to the required dimensions, or, in the case of using store blanks, prepare them for assembly. Proceed with the direct assembly of all parts and components, attach brackets, hinges or other prepared fasteners to the shelf.

After the complete assembly of the structure, if necessary, proceed to decorate it with the help of various elements: appliqués, buttons, beads, paints and varnishes, etc.

Make horizontal markings on the wall surface to ensure even attachment to the wall. Attach the finished structure to the place allocated to it, check the strength of the structure.

The process of making a shelf with your own hands has come to an end, now you just have to put your favorite collection on it, lay out a set of books or any other items for which the shelf was intended.

I would like to identify a few unusual, original and simple ideas for wall and floor shelves. It is not at all necessary to make a standard design, you can decorate the interior of the room:

Shelf with straps - to assemble it, you will need two flat boards and two strong leather straps.

Invisible bookshelf - you will need several steel brackets on which books are placed. Looking at this design, it seems that the books are just floating in the air.

A shelf of branches and curved snags - wooden parts are assembled into a multi-tiered structure, and the direct base for arranging objects is made of glass or plastic.

A wall shelf made of water pipes will be an excellent decoration for interiors of special styles.

Floor shelf made using glass bottles and base boards.

There are a lot of variations in the design of wall shelves, because such a piece of furniture can be made from almost any material at hand. Turn on your imagination and start the creative process of creating an unusual, aesthetic and functional piece of furniture.

DIY shelves photo

If there is nowhere to put books, then you can get creative and make a bookshelf with your own hands. A thing created by yourself will always be highly valued and will fit into the interior in an original way. A classic option for storing books is a shelf with glass, as it protects the books stored inside from dust and fading in the sun.

Before you start making a bookshelf, you need to accurately determine its purpose, location and appearance, as it must fit the existing interior and hang in a convenient place. Having chosen the place where the shelf will be located, calculate its size in order to know the amount of materials needed for manufacturing.

The choice of materials for manufacturing

For a multi-tiered book shelf, you need to use thin and light boards.

Wood is considered a classic material for making furniture by hand, as it is affordable and easy to process. If the shelf is single-tier, then you can use thick and heavy boards that look very solid in the interior. And if a multi-tiered structure is planned, like a small hanging rack, it is better to choose a thinner and lighter tree so that the shelf does not fall under its own weight.

The bookshelf can be made of glass. In relation to wood and plastic, glass does not win either in terms of strength or in terms of lightness, but it looks much more sophisticated. Working with glass is complex and requires a lot of time and accuracy. It is best to glue glass with epoxy resins, and to give strength to bends, you can lay a thin aluminum profile. The biggest difficulty is drilling the glass to install the fasteners, so a beginner is better off without it. Ordinary window glass is not suitable for making a bookshelf, so you will need to purchase thick impact-resistant glass.

How to make a bookshelf out of wood?

To create the simplest wooden structure you will need:

A jigsaw will be needed to cut boards when building book shelves.

  • boards or furniture board;
  • varnish or stain, brush or roller, you can stock up on acrylic paints for applying patterns and ornaments;
  • hacksaw, electric jigsaw;
  • pencil, measuring tape, building level;
  • sandpaper or grinder;
  • a screwdriver and a set of wood screws of small length.

You will need to make 3 pairs of blanks from a standard board 200x20 mm. The blanks should be 200x20x400, 190x20x260 and 195x20x1200 mm, 2 of each size. To saw off the boards accurately and evenly, you need to use a measuring tape and a marking pencil, and then cut exactly along the intended line. The cut will be clean if the hacksaw and jigsaw are sharp, it is recommended to change the blade before work.

Grinding blanks is an obligatory stage of processing after sawing according to size.

The number of sandpaper is selected depending on the condition of the blank boards. For very rough and splintery surfaces, a large skin is needed, which can then be changed to a smaller one.

Assembly of shelf parts

The longest blanks are attached to the vertical elements, which are the shelves. The shortest boards are added between them, placing them also vertically between 2 bases. These boards serve as partitions and additional supports, since long shelves under the weight of books can bend and deform the structure. Each cut is fixed with a pair of self-tapping screws, placing them at the ends of the workpieces. If the shelf will be used for very heavy things, you can fasten it with not 2, but 3 self-tapping screws, and add corners for greater strength.

Finishing

After sanding, to make the product more attractive, you can slightly round the corners or even cut small patterns on the surface. With a burner, you can create interesting motifs inside and out. And if there are only paints and a brush, the tree must first be primed by applying 2-3 layers of PVA glue or special primer to the surface. After that, the work with the brush will go easier. It is better to choose acrylic or tempera paints, but you can also paint with oil, with patience until it dries completely.

Wooden products need at least impregnation with varnish, stain or waxing for their safety. Untreated wood cracks and cracks, deforming at the same time. A good option is several layers of yacht varnish, which perfectly protects the wood. Since there will be a lot of unpleasant smell during work, it is better to transfer this stage to the balcony or to the garage, in extreme cases, to the stairwell. If a drawing is varnished, it is sometimes important to choose a varnish that does not give yellowness. Yacht varnish is not suitable in this case, it is better to take automotive or acrylic, but the latter is not too resistant to various atmospheric influences.

Sometimes, in order to make your interior design exceptional, it is not at all necessary to resort to the services of expensive specialists or buy exclusive and expensive furniture. After all, the interior design of a room is not a routine task, but the most creative process of transforming space. Therefore, sometimes, to give a room a certain individual style, the most ordinary and ingenuous objects are enough, which with their presence will dilute the monotony of the interior, making it more dynamic and functional. Such elements are racks and wall shelves, when choosing which it is only important to take into account the harmony of their shapes and colors with the surrounding interior, while not forgetting about their main functional purpose.

Types of shelves

The variety of types of shelves today is very large. If we take as a basis the material from which the shelf is made, then they can all be classified as follows:

  1. Glass and mirror;
  2. Wooden (chipboard, MDF, plywood);
  3. Polymer and plastic;
  4. From other materials combined with each other.

If we take as a basis the design, appearance, structure and method of attachment, then we can distinguish the types:

wall

Wall shelves supported by other stable furniture or floors. A positive feature of such shelves is that their special design allows them to withstand a sufficiently large load, which makes them indispensable helpers in the house when you need a place to store something large and heavy.

Most often they are used for all kinds of equipment or storing shoes in. These shelves take up a minimum of space, which is also a positive feature, especially for.

Built-in "niche-shelves" in the design of plasterboard will look advantageous in any interior

Classic (rectangular)

Classic rectangular wall shelves are attached directly to the wall. The advantage of this structure is that both internal and external surfaces can be used. The back wall may be missing, leaving the wall open.

Upstairs you can put various interior items: vases, clocks, photographs, lamps, books, nightlights and figurines. It is these shelves, due to their functionality, that add coziness to the apartment.

Simplicity and conciseness - the main strong point of the interior in the style of minimalism

Multi-tiered

Tiered shelves on the wall look very original, and also combine many different functions. This type of shelves can combine a combination of various horizontal, vertical and inclined planes, which is very convenient in everyday life.

However, they often make just the same horizontal planes, which, firstly, have no less beautiful appearance, and secondly, are very functional. In this case, you should give free rein to your imagination to make something both comfortable and beautiful, corresponding both to your preferences and to the surrounding interior.

corner

Corner shelves make it possible to use all the empty corners in the apartment. Most often they are used in bathrooms, but this type of shelves can be used anywhere. They are reliable and stable. They can even be made transparent, which will look very modern.

The use of shelves in the interior

Wall shelves have integrated into our lives so much that it is already difficult to imagine life without them. There is no such place in the house where they would not find their application. People put them on, hang them on, screw the shelves to the wall, mount them in cabinets, build them in chests of drawers, install them in mezzanines and other hard-to-reach places. After all, shelves are not only an elegant decoration of the interior, they are also an additional place for storing things, which is always lacking.

In addition, beautiful shelves in the interior will help to correctly place accents in the room, emphasizing its overall flavor. They will look even more attractive if they are equipped with additional lighting in the form of an LED strip that emits soft light.

There are no special rules where it is necessary and possible to place shelves. They can be installed anywhere. However, it is still desirable to take into account the functional purpose of the room:

  • If this is an office, then it is advisable to install them above the table, within the reach of an outstretched hand, so that if necessary you do not have to constantly get up from your chair.
  • The same method of placing shelves is suitable for. Only in this case it is better to use open shelves, as every housewife loves to have everything in front of her.
  • Installing wall shelves in or designers advise near the bed or above it. Thus, you can dilute the empty space of the wall.

As mentioned above, in addition to the functional benefits, it is necessary that the wall shelves also bring aesthetic pleasure. To do this, you can place your favorite books and magazines on them, arrange photos of smiling relatives and people close to you that will give you pleasant memories and warm feelings.

Shelves are a decorative element household items whose main task is to decorate the interior. This item always attracts attention, so it is very important that the things placed on them are correctly and neatly arranged.

  1. If you want everything to look harmonious and tasteful, things must be arranged in a certain order. For example, large items should not be placed next to small ones, they are best placed separately and preferably higher, while small items will look great on the lower tiers of the shelf.
  2. We must not forget about the right. Each element must strictly correspond to the general style of the room. Bright colors should not spoil the interior, but rather complement it, competently bringing the color palette of the room to perfection.
  3. Shelf space must be used both in height and in depth. Taller items should be placed behind lower ones, while functional items should be placed in the foreground. However, you should not clutter up the space too much, so as not to create a heavy feeling of an overabundance of decor. Ideally, the ratio of free and occupied space should be 50 to 50%.

Also, do not forget about the option of symmetrical placement of items on the shelf. This method allows you to achieve the desired effect of a certain completeness of the interior.

Wooden shelves and racks

Fashionable and modern wooden shelves have long been replaced by huge and uncomfortable racks and cabinets. These fashionable and practical elements fit perfectly into the design of any room. They go well with any style of interior, are easy to use and maintain, and are also a great place to store things.

Wooden shelves will become not only a beautiful addition to your interior, but also an essential attribute of modern life.

Buy or DIY

Today it is not difficult to buy a ready-made hanging shelf both via the Internet and in any furniture store. The advantages of such a purchase are obvious:

  • No need to waste time making your own wooden shelf;
  • You can buy certified high quality products that will last a long time;
  • You can pick up a rack, wardrobe or bed in the same color and design, since in stores hanging shelves are usually a separate element of a furniture set.
  • You can immediately choose the required size and height of the shelf, thereby gaining confidence that it will withstand the load you need.

However, not everyone will like the store shelf, many prefer to make it on their own in order to get an original and unique thing.

Making a wooden shelf with your own hands is not difficult, especially since today there are a lot of ideas and master classes on the Internet.

Wood and metal are a great addition to a loft-style living room interior.

Master class for making a wooden shelf

There are models of hanging shelves that you are unlikely to find on the Internet - these are wooden shelves made from scraps of boards or bars, for which a piece of rope serves as a fastener. They look very stylish and unusual in the interior. Here are the two most popular ways to make them:
First option:

  1. We cut the board to the desired size, process it with a grinder, or paint.
  2. On the sides on both sides at the same distance with a drill, we make one hole with a diameter equal to the diameter of the rope, on which our shelf will hang.
  3. We thread the ends of the rope or rope into the holes and tie reliable tight knots so that the board holds on them. We fix the shelf in the chosen place.

Second option (multi-tiered):

  1. As in the previous case, we prepare the boards, this time there will be at least two of them. We will also need small bars of different sizes and thicknesses, they will become the side walls of the future model.
  2. To the bars from above and below, using self-tapping screws and special wood glue, we fix the main boards. Then we give our workpiece some time to dry. The first tier of the structure is ready.
  3. In a similar way, using the same material, we make the remaining cells of the future shelf. We carefully monitor that the inner corners are right.
  4. After the required number of elements for the shelf are collected, using a rope or a metal chain, we connect them together. The final step is to install the wall mount. A carabiner or an anchor bolt with a hook is best suited for these purposes.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated here. Shelves can be painted to match the color of the furniture, stained or decorated with decorative elements to your liking.

How to choose the right shelf

Agree, hanging shelves in the interior always look spectacular. If, of course, you pick them up correctly and place them in the right places where they will look good. Now, fortunately, the choice of shelves is huge and their variety is simply amazing.

The shelf is not only useful and necessary furniture, but also a great design element that can bring beauty to the house.

In order to make a choice, let's remember what types of shelves exist:

  • One of the most popular shelves is wall mounted, which is attached directly to the wall;
  • Also popular is the corner shelf, which is placed between two walls. This saves space in the room;
  • Floor shelves that are placed on the floor are also very effective. And if they are also on wheels, then they can be moved, removed or rearranged at the right time;
  • No less popular are hanging shelves, which, using a variety of chains, cables, belts, are attached to a wall or ceiling.
  • Folding shelves are also a great way to save space, as they can be folded if necessary.
  • Shelf-table, the name speaks for itself, can take two forms: the table itself and the shelf. This is a great option for a small room.
  • If the area of your room allows you to use more space, then shelving is perfect here.

Yes, as you can see, the variety of shelves is great, and there are quite a lot of them today. You just have to decide on the type of construction. Most importantly, do not clutter the entire room with shelves. They should go well with the overall look of the room in which you plan to hang them.

If you need shelving for storing important things: books, documents, photographs, then try to make them stable and strong. Especially if they are intended for children.

Shelves in this case should not be placed too low, as children are very active and mobile. Also, do not opt for glass shelves. And their corners should not be sharp.

As for the choice of shelves in. Here you can give free rein to your imagination. Tetris shelves, shelves of unusual shapes, spiral shelves, frame shelves will look good here.

In the bedroom, you can get by with the usual classic shelves. Most spectacularly, they will look over the bed, where you can put family photos.

Wall-mounted bookcases and wood shelving are all the rage

White is a great backdrop for wall decor.

For it will be better if the material from which the shelf is made matches the material of the countertop. This will give the kitchen space its own specific style and grace.

If natural wood is used as a material for shelves in the kitchen, its surface must be reliably protected by a product that is resistant to moisture and temperature changes.

Universal hanging shelf

Hanging shelves on ropes have gained great popularity for a reason. They look much more spectacular than ordinary shelves, and at the same time they are really functional and versatile. They can be adapted to store heavy items such as dishes or flower pots, as well as light accessories. And thanks to the side holders, the shelf can also be used to store books.

Hanging kitchen shelf made from wooden boards and ropes

This cabinet shelf is suspended from the ceiling on ropes 2 cm thick. You can make such a shelf using our instructions, with the only difference being that the hooks in this case are attached to the ceiling and not to the wall

Such a homemade shelf made of rough wood and ropes will look great in the interior in the Scandinavian style, eco and country style, loft and rustic

And now we propose to move on to practice and make such a universal shelf with our own hands.

You will need:

  • 4 wooden boards (2.5 cm thick and any desired length, for example, 1 m long as in our master class);
  • Rope rope about 8 mm thick and 4 m long;
  • Drill and feather drill with a diameter of 10 mm (the drill should be slightly thicker than the rope);
  • 2 steel hooks and dowels for concrete with a diameter of 8 mm;
  • Pencil.

Basic materials needed to make a shelf

Master Class:

  1. With a drill and a pen drill, drill a hole in each corner of the board (pre-draw the markup with a pencil). Remember that the holes should not be too close to the edges.

  1. Paint your board with paint/stain, and then, when the finish is dry, finish with a matte varnish or wax (this is not necessary, but desirable - if you want to protect the shelf from wet cleaning and scratches).

  • If you want to preserve the natural color and texture of the wood, then simply sand the board on all sides with coarse sandpaper or a sander.

  1. Install the steel hooks on the wall: first, make marks with a level, then drill holes with a hammer drill with an 8 mm concrete drill, insert 8 mm dowels into the holes and, finally, screw the hooks into them.

  1. Cut your 4 meter rope into 4 equal lengths of 1 meter. Pass the ropes through the holes in the board, and then tie their ends on the back of the board in a knot as shown in the photo below.

  1. Now that a pair of ropes has formed on each short side of the board, tie the ends of each pair with a knot and hang on hooks. Make sure the shelf hangs straight and adjust the top knots if necessary. By the way, in the future you will be able to adjust the length of the ropes due to the upper knots.

You can experiment a little with the ways of fastening the ropes and make not only shelves, but even hanging racks with your own hands.

If you have an unnecessary drawer from a chest of drawers, then you can make such a beautiful shelf with dividers out of it. It can store something that should always be at hand or in plain sight.

You will need:

  • Box;
  • Paint of the desired color and brush;
  • Wax or matte varnish;
  • Wooden board or plywood of small thickness;
  • Carpentry glue or liquid nails;
  • Loops for the shelf;
  • Two dowels 8 mm and screws for them;
  • Perforator and drill for concrete 8 mm;
  • Phillips screwdriver;
  • Jigsaw;
  • Medium grit sandpaper;
  • A piece of wallpaper for decorating the back wall;
  • Putty for wood.

Master Class:

  1. Cut the dividers out of the plywood/wood plank to the size you want with a jigsaw, then sand them down on all sides with sandpaper.
  2. If the drawer has handles, remove them and seal the holes with putty.
  3. Paint the crate in 2-3 coats, letting each coat dry completely. If you want to achieve a worn effect, rub the drawer in some places with sandpaper.
  4. On the back wall of the shelf, glue a piece of wallpaper cut exactly to its size. You can stick wallpaper on wallpaper glue or any universal glue.

  1. Install the dividers with wood glue or liquid nails.

  1. Next, coat the box with wax or a matte varnish to protect the top coat from damage and moisture.
  2. On the back of the shelf, nail or screw two metal loops onto the screws.
  3. Make two holes on the wall, after marking with a level, insert dowels into the holes, and screw the screws into them, but not completely, but leaving about 5 mm. Well, that's all, now you can hang the shelf on the wall.

  • Black paint (if you want to create a worn effect), white paint or any other desired color, brush;
  • Wax or matte varnish;
  • Wood putty;
  • Joiner's glue.

Master Class:

  1. Cut the back of the chair to the desired size, after marking it out.

  1. In this project, the wooden base of the former hanger successfully approached for the manufacture of the upper shelf. You can also use a board made of wood or plywood - it must be cut to the desired size, and then all ends should be sanded. If possible, it is desirable to shape the edges of the workpiece with a milling cutter.

  1. With a medium grit sandpaper (for example, 220 microns), remove the old coating from the back of the chair, then paint both parts with black paint and leave to dry. This is necessary so that in the future the black layer shows through the scuffs of the top coating.
  2. It's time to attach the plank to the back of the chair. To do this, drill a small hole from each of its edges (on the outside, where you want to fasten the parts), then screw in the screws, drowning them flush. If your chair back has vertical crossbars like in this project, then it is advisable to also fasten them to the shelf with wood glue.

  1. Cover the attachment points with wood putty, following the manufacturer's instructions.

  1. Now screw the hooks to the bottom rail of your shelf, after marking it out. If necessary, the hooks can be painted (before attaching to the craft).

  1. If desired, screw a sign over each hook. The plate itself can also be decorated with numbers using a stencil, a small brush and black acrylic paint. However, you can come up with your own way to decorate the shelf.
  2. Paint the entire craft white (or whatever color you choose) and then rub some sandpaper over to expose the black layer of paint.
  3. Finally, cover the shelf with a matte varnish, or better yet, wax it to protect the top coat from chips, moisture, and scratches.

In fact, shelves of various configurations can be made from chairs. Here are some more photo ideas for your inspiration.

Bathroom shelf from the back of a chair

Want to make a shoe rack without using a jigsaw or drill? This is possible, you just need to find / purchase a wooden pallet (pallet) and modify it a little.

  • Used pallets are often given away for free or sold for 100-200 rubles on flea market sites like Avito. You can also ask around for used pallets at local construction sites, warehouses and wholesalers. New pallets can be ordered in specialized online stores for only 200-250 rubles.

How to turn an old pallet into such a pretty country-style shoe rack with your own hands? Take some free time and follow the next step-by-step instructions.

You will need:

  • Wooden pallet;
  • Hand/electric grinder with triangular and standard attachment or grinder. If there is no machine, use a small wooden block and wrap it with sandpaper;
  • Sandpaper with grit, 40, 80 and 120;
  • Brush;
  • Gloves;
  • Soft rag;
  • Protective dust mask;
  • Moisture-proof primer for wood (preferably with an antiseptic);
  • Paint/stain and brush;
  • Wax or matte varnish.

Master Class:

  1. Sand your pallet from all sides or just the part that will be visible: first use coarse grit sandpaper to remove the roughest bumps, knots and dirt. Then continue sanding with medium to fine grit sandpaper. Next, remove the dust with a brush, vacuum the entire pallet and finally wipe it with a damp cloth.

This is what your pallet will look like after sanding

  1. Apply a water-repellent primer to the entire (!) pallet. It will protect the wood from rotting and moisture that will drain from the shoes, and prepare the surface for painting.
  2. When the primer is dry, start painting the shelf. You can paint the entire pallet or just the "front" part, as in this project.

  1. When the paint is dry, cover the pallet with a matte varnish or wax. If you want to preserve the texture and pattern of the wood, treat the pallet with a stain of the desired tone or completely cover the shelf with matte varnish / wax.
  2. Using a stencil, acrylic paint, and a brush, write "Shoes!" in the top center of the shelf. like in this project or any other word/drawing.

  1. The top of the shelf can be decorated with houseplants, such as succulents in containers and baking buckets.

  1. You can upgrade your shoe rack by embedding a bottom of wooden slats into the middle and top tiers (they just need to be cut to the right size and nailed down).

Photo gallery of ideas

If you didn’t like any of the ways we proposed to make a shelf, we suggest looking for ideas in our photo gallery. Here we have collected other examples of wall shelves that you can make with your own hands from wooden boards, the same pallets, boxes and other easily accessible “lumber”.

Making a corner shelf with your own hands is as easy as shelling pears. To make one shelf, as in the photo below, cut a triangular blank of the desired size and with the required angle (rarely, the inner corners of the walls are exactly 90 degrees) from plywood or wood 1.5-2.5 cm thick, as well as two small support strips (length one plank should correspond to the leg of the triangular blank, and the length of the second plank should be calculated using the formula: the length of the leg minus the width of the first plank).

All parts must be carefully sanded and then painted or simply waxed / varnished. Next, make markings using the building level both on the walls and on the planks (note that the holes will be through!). Drill holes in the walls, insert dowels into them and then hang the supports on the screws using the push-through mounting method. It is important to choose the right screw length - it should be calculated according to the formula: dowel length + support bar thickness + screw diameter. Finally, you just have to install the shelves and fix them either with wood glue or with nails / wood screws. If you want to hide the self-tapping screws, use wood putty, and then paint over the "patches" with paint to match the shelf.
