Do-it-yourself shelf from improvised materials. Making decorative shelves on the wall and floor with your own hands. Original shelving options

What could be more commonplace than an ordinary hanging shelf on the wall? But a good imagination and skillful hands can work wonders with such a simple object, turning it into a beautiful interior design element for your home.

One of the methods of decorating a room is the use of shelves.

All materials have their advantages and disadvantages. The following are suitable for wall shelves.

  • Wood lumber - is the most common and cheapest - it is easy to cut into blanks, process and paint.
  • Metal is not always suitable, it is more difficult to process it at home, shelves made of it do not fit well into the home interior, they are prone to corrosion.
  • Glass - looks great in the interior of any room, makes the shelves visually lighter and more airy, but due to its fragility, it requires special tools and equipment for cutting complex holes and grinding.
  • Plastic is the lightest material that can replace all the previous ones.

They hang shelves on the wall, put them on the floor, some are hung from the ceiling or beams.

NOTE! The fantasy of a person in choosing material for shelves on the wall is inexhaustible - old suitcases, TV cases, water pipes and corners. Even ... trouser belts can be used as fasteners.

Much more often they are functional.

Buy or make a shelf on the wall with your own hands

What is the advantage of homemade wall shelves over purchased ones? Furniture stores offer options for all occasions - bookshelves, for dishes, for phones, for flowers. But in defense of homemade products, the following arguments can be made:

  • the purchased shelf does not always correspond to your ideas of beauty - either the color is inappropriate, or the shape is awkward;
  • the dimensions of the purchased product do not fit into the dimensions of your room;
  • the height or width of the shelves does not match the size of the things you want to place on them;
  • after the repair, there were pieces of good material and fasteners - it's a pity to throw it away, but there is no desire and place to store it.

But best of all - they are easy to make yourself, with your own hands.

ON A NOTE! Making shelves on the wall with your own hands is often cheaper than buying them in a store of a well-known furniture company.

They are made of wood, plywood, laminated chipboard, fiberboard, there are glass shelves.

Shelves are different

Before assembling a shelf, determine what type it will be. Furniture craftsmen got the hang of making wall shelves for all occasions:

  • open - without side walls, front doors and back wall;
  • closed - in essence, such shelves are hanging cabinets in miniature, differing from them in their smaller mass, depth and height;
  • corner - located at the junction of two walls, can be both for the inner corner and for the outer;
  • asymmetric - the layout of the shelves is devoid of an axis of symmetry, subject to the preservation of functionality;
  • suspended - harnesses, cables, dense fabric materials, belts are used as hangers for shelves, and the ceiling is used as a support;
  • decorative - designed to beautifully arrange interesting things.

The same materials are used as racks, but they are also made of metal, plastics and other absolutely incredible things - for example, pipes or bottles.

The module is a universal solution

The easiest way is to assemble wall shelves, consisting of side, top and bottom walls, fastened together with self-tapping screws or furniture fittings. Make such "modules" of different lengths and heights as needed and fix them on the wall in the right order. This option is well suited for the manufacture of bookshelves.

In living rooms, it is not so important what material the shelf is made of. It is important that its design is in the same style as the interior.

You will need the following materials and tools:

  • a board 16-20 mm thick and 150-180 mm wide - it can be pine, MDF, plywood or chipboard.
  • self-tapping screws;
  • screwdriver;
  • building level;
  • furniture hacksaw for wood.

Even the functionality is not always important: some play an exclusively decorative role. On them, if there is something, then one or two items.

Marking and sawing

The height and width of the shelf is chosen arbitrarily. If the ends of the upper and lower walls rest against the edges of the side walls, then, when determining their height, it is necessary to make an allowance for twice the thickness of the board.

Their role is to give the interior of the home a special style and color.

ATTENTION! To cut the board, use a hand circular saw or electric jigsaw. Their use allows you to make the cut surface even.

If we talk about shelves in technical rooms - the kitchen and the bathroom, in particular, then practicality requirements are added to aesthetic considerations almost everywhere.

When marking parts for corner wall shelves, the upper and lower walls are made of two boards with oblique ends. Their connection must fit exactly into the angle for which they are intended. The surface of the ends is smeared with carpentry glue, the boards are connected and tightened with clamps until completely dry. Additionally, you can fasten the corners with self-tapping screws.

Workpiece processing

Before installation, the wooden parts of the shelves must be sanded and a protective coating applied. You can treat the wood with stain and varnish. However, such a shelf does not always fit into the overall color scheme of the interior. Then it is better to apply a primer and paint in the desired color.

For safety, in the place where the self-tapping screw is screwed into the lower part of the sidewall, it is necessary to pre-drill holes with a thin drill.

Shelf Assembly

To fasten the walls with self-tapping screws, it is necessary to mark the holes. From the end edge of the bottom wall measure a distance equal to half the thickness of the side and draw a line parallel to the cut. Marks are made on it for the drill, stepping back five centimeters to the left and right. Also mark the opposite end. Make holes. Fix the side walls of the shelf with self-tapping screws. Produce markings and fasteners of the upper wall of the shelf in the same way.

So that the shelf is even, and subsequently it does not warp, in the lower part, on the reverse side, you can fix the location of the parts with flat window corners.

ON A NOTE! Other methods can also be used to fasten the walls of the shelf - wooden dowels with carpentry glue, special mounting hardware - tie corners, eccentric tie.

Despite the fact that electronic devices are replacing printed publications from a person's life, many people still carefully store books and magazines that are dear to their hearts, the storage location of which often leaves much to be desired.

Installing a shelf on the wall

It would seem - there is nothing easier. In fact, this is a crucial stage. You don't want all your efforts to ennoble your home to collapse in one moment, do you?

The easiest way to use a hinged corner for shelves. The upper eye is attached to the wall with a dowel, the lower eye is attached to the shelf with a self-tapping screw or a bolt with a nut and washer.

IMPORTANT! For shelf load of 20 to 50 kg, use brackets. Mark the holes on the wall using the building level.

Hands must be clean, because untreated wood is very easily soiled.

The dimensions of the shelf will depend on the size of the books on it will be stored.

Manufacturing of honeycomb shelves

A shelf of the original form requires imagination and a little more diligence, but your efforts will more than pay off - the original product will enliven the interior of the room.

  1. We saw the board into 15 pieces 300 mm long with a cutting angle of 30 °.
  2. We make the first "cell". To do this, we glue the hexagonal section and strengthen its corners with self-tapping screws.
  3. All other “honeycombs” of the shelves are made without one wall.
  4. We fold them on the floor in such a way that the missing face is replaced by the wall of the adjacent section. We fasten together with glue and screws.
  5. If there are segments of sufficient length, then you can make shelves inside the “honeycomb” itself.

Each part must be processed with a grinder, only then it can be fastened with other parts into a single structure.

IMPORTANT! To avoid the appearance of cracks and distortions when tightening self-tapping screws, pre-drill holes with a diameter of 1.2 mm or more.

Of course, you can not do without a tool. The minimum is a wood saw and a Phillips screwdriver.

The requirements for strength are imposed on bookshelves: they hold significant weight.

Bookshelf with hidden fasteners

If your taste is offended by the type of fasteners, then you can make a small open shelf with hidden fasteners.

First of all, you need to think over the dimensions of the shelf being made and decide on the place where it will be located, only after that purchase boards.

You can often see when people decorate their homes with artificial flowers, but still nothing can replace the freshness of a natural beautiful plant.

For this you need:

  • wooden beam with a thickness of 25-30 mm with a well-polished surface;
  • board of the same thickness, made of the same material;
  • pins - cylindrical pins made of wood;
  • wood glue;
  • dowels and screws.

Thanks to a modern universal tool, a home craftsman can make almost any shelf, even in an apartment, not to mention working in his workshop.

The assembly of such a shelf consists of the following steps.

  1. Saw the timber and the board into blanks of equal length.
  2. Using a template, matching holes are made in the side of the bar and the future shelf, the diameter and total depth of which should match the length of the dowels.
  3. The beam is attached to the wall with dowels and self-tapping screws.
  4. Pins lubricated with glue are carefully hammered into the holes of the beam.
  5. The surfaces of the beam and the shelf that will be connected with their help are also lubricated with glue.
  6. The shelf is “put on” on the dowels and pressed tightly. For reliability, you can gently tap the entire length of the side of the shelf with a rubber mallet.

Of course, you immediately want to make something voluminous and beautiful, which is quite natural, but first you can try your hand at making a simple but neat shelf.

Such a shelf will look like a natural extension of the wall of your room. Just don't load it with a lot of items.

Moreover, these products can be the first self-made things. It's really simple.

Decor is everything

You assembled and hung the shelves on the wall. But they look unpresentable - too empty or, on the contrary, littered with books and other trifles. To make the wall shelves in the interior of your room look aesthetically pleasing and eye-catching, follow these simple rules.

  • The law of three colors is one dominant color for the shelf and two complementary colors for the items on it. It is desirable that the color of the shelf contrasts with the objects standing on it - this way they will look more expressive.
  • Control chaos with triads. Arrange items with similar colors on different shelves so that they are at the tops of imaginary triangles.
  • Give more air - some things, especially large ones, require more free space on the shelf.
  • Small gizmos need a favorable background. For example, a figurine standing on a shelf next to a luxurious vase must be moved away from the spectacular neighbor and placed against the background of a small watercolor painting.
  • Try to place objects that are similar in size and color relative to imaginary vertical or horizontal axes of symmetry.
  • The higher the shelf, the lighter the items should be. It is desirable to place all massive objects on the lower shelves, and light ones on the upper shelves.
  • Do not forget about functionality - on a shelf located at the level of your gaze, place those things that you use most often.

A simple design is good: you can make any shelves with your own hands.

Don't be afraid to experiment. A wall shelf can be made from any material, but lumber is best. Use hanging brackets or brackets for installation. And do not be too lazy to beautifully arrange books and vases on them.

Structurally, most of the shelves consist of the actual shelves and jumpers.

VIDEO: Do-it-yourself shelf (how to make a wooden shelf)

Installing decorative shelves on the wall allows you to decorate any living space. It becomes more functional and at the same time cozy. A place for these products can be found on the ceiling, floor or walls, so do-it-yourself shelves can be wall-mounted, hanging or floor-standing.

Decorating rooms with decorative shelves

Shelves of high height, placed on the floor, are called racks. Usually they are decorative items mounted on a bracket or pipe. The popularity of this option is due to its convenience and functionality.

You can decorate with shelves rooms that have different purposes. If this is a living room or bedroom, then using a finished or home-made product, you can install a TV on the wall. Shelves located in the bathroom or kitchen are considered especially convenient. For their manufacture, materials such as wood, plywood, glass, laminated chipboard, fiberboard are used. Racks are made of the same materials. However, they can be made from metal, plastic, etc. When creating unusual objects, you can use plastic bottles, unnecessary pipes, etc.

When making a shelf on the wall with your own hands, you should not only pay attention to the material used. It is necessary to ensure that it is decorated in the same style with the interior of the room. The functionality of decorative shelves may not play a primary role. If any interior items are placed on them, then their number is always limited. They should give the desired style to the room. In the process of its creation, it is necessary to take into account the stylistic relationship with products of contrasting colors.

In the interior, shelves sometimes play the role of the main element. For the competent design of free space above the sofa, shelves are used, matched in color to the walls of the living room. The shelf can be a separator for separate zones in the room. These types of products in technical rooms, for example, in a kitchen or bathroom, should not only be an aesthetic object, but also a useful product for certain needs related to the storage of any items.

The practicality of decorative kitchen shelves is due to their easy maintenance. The requirements for shelves in the bathroom are high. Since the humidity in this room is quite high, for the manufacture of shelves such types of materials are used that do not collapse under the influence of moisture and are safe for human health. These include plastic and stainless steel. Bathroom products can be made from moisture-resistant MDF material. To successfully operate them, the bathroom must be well ventilated.

Hanging shelf structures

If there is a place on the wall in the room where something should be hung, then many types of modern furniture can occupy the lower level, for example, sofas or tables. Since the upper part must remain empty, then there is a dissonance associated with an overload of the lower part of the room. The upper part of the room remains empty or half empty, so its walls will need to be decorated with decorative shelves.

In most cases, wall structures consist of jumpers and shelves directly. To combine these elements, a huge number of options are suitable. If you choose a simpler design, then you can make any shelves from it with your own hands. These products may be the first of the shelves that were made without any specific experience.

DIY wall shelves made from wood or other suitable materials are simple. It is easy to find many different diagrams and drawings on the sites, thanks to which it is enough to imagine how you can make a shelf on the wall with your own hands. It may be necessary to make changes to the drawings beforehand if the design will have different dimensions.

When using fiberboard, it is important to remember that the thickness of this material should be about 16-18 mm. The distance between the support posts should be no more than 1 m. It is better if the span is 90 cm, otherwise there will be a deflection.

If you want to assemble certain nodes yourself, and the diagram is not entirely clear, then you will need to prepare additional fasteners. The reliability of the design can be ensured in the presence of corners. They are necessary for attaching jumpers to prepared shelves. Installation of corners is made from below - 2 pcs. for each connection.

Shelf fixing

The traditional way to install finished shelves are hinges. In this case, the product can be made of wood and fiberboard, as well as materials with a suitable thickness to allow them to be attached. You can hang shelves on the walls using self-tapping screws. The distance between the centers of the hinge holes should be measured, setting aside its value on the wall surface. In this case, it is necessary to monitor the horizontalness of the line.

The marked points will allow you to drill holes for the dowels evenly. Fasteners will need to be inserted into the hole, and then a dowel-nail with a small cap is screwed into it. It should fit into a loop or a bracket, which is a pin, slightly bent upwards.

Then you need to hang a shelf on them. It is far from possible to make a hole in any material with a drill. For example, if the shelves are made of glass. For glass decorative products, special fasteners are used. They should consist of 2 parts, between which glass must be inserted.

Pelican is the most popular type of glass fastening, which has a peculiar shape and has different colors. This mount is able to hold glass with a thickness of 8-34 mm. It is a suitable element for various materials having the specified thickness, and not only for glass. Pelican allows you to give glass shelves a stylish look.

The arrangement of hinged glass shelves using this material is not difficult. You will first need to purchase a special mount by contacting the glass workshop for ordering a piece of glass with processed edges of the desired size and shape. If you have experience, then such glass can be cut independently.

After the assembly is completed, the structure can be fixed to the wall on pelicans. The collapsible case involves the removal of a decorative lining. The mounting plate has 2 holes: above and below in the housing. After fixing the shelf, you can insert the trim back, and then mount the glass.

You can also strengthen the finished product with the help of reliable decorative brackets that perform the function of decoration. There is a mounting method that allows you to hide the fasteners. It is called secret, it assumes the presence of a seat for a pin. There are a large number of ways to attach shelves to the wall, which allows you to choose the most suitable one.

Installing book shelves

Bookshelves need to be strong enough to hold a significant amount of weight, so the mounting method and construction must be particularly robust. Shelves for books are traditionally made of wood, which can be laminated or veneered fiberboard. When choosing a material, it should be borne in mind that do-it-yourself wooden shelves made of fiberboard, in the presence of a long span (more than 90 cm), bend over time.

Before you make a bookshelf with your own hands according to individual sizes, you should take into account that the distance between the racks should not be more than 90 cm. Bookshelves are wall-mounted and floor-mounted. These types of structures can be angular. The simplest case is a board that is fixed in the most appropriate way.

Bookshelves

Making bookshelves with your own hands from improvised materials allows you to create the most exclusive products that are the main element of decor. If the bookshelf is floor-standing, then it is able to withstand greater loads than a hinged one. The design consists of racks and the shelf itself.

As a highlight, you can provide a broken line of shelves. Bookshelves can be unusual. A wooden structure for books, which has a small shelf in the center, can be painted in a bright color.

DIY kitchen shelves

For the kitchen interior, it is important to provide a more functional option. Since cabinets can take up too much space in such a room, you can buy or make your own shelves. For example, in the kitchen there may be a shelf for a TV.

Using free space to the maximum is the best solution. The gap between the refrigerator and the wall can be filled with a self-made shelf structure. It is important to accurately measure the gap so that the product can be used.

The design may include wheels that allow you to roll out and again hide narrow shelves behind the refrigerator or some piece of furniture. It is not difficult to make such a retractable structure for different containers with your own hands, having tools and improvised materials. If the sink or table is near the window, you can take the sidewalls.

The wall shelf sometimes takes up all the space in the kitchen. When hanging the entire wall above the kitchen table with small cabinets, remember that this is not the best option. Such designs have a heavy look, so it is better to provide them with glass doors or leave the shelves open.

Another interesting option is a shelf in the form of a grid on chains. It can accommodate various items. This type of design is suitable when the kitchen table is not near the wall. An additional way to save space is to equip a kitchen-dining room zoned with a counter. Above it, you can build a hanging shelf.

Hanging functional shelves

The designs of the suspended type shelves are original. They can be made from several boards including:

  • 4 ropes;
  • 2 straps.

Shelves of this type can be located at any level. You can make them with your own hands in a short period of time.

Hanging shelf suitable for children's room. It is enough to decorate a functional product with drawings of a child. It can have any shape, and for pasting it, you can use non-woven wallpaper. For pasting the product with thick paper, PVA glue is used. After the coating has dried, apply a water-based varnish on it 2 times.

The product can be easily washed. Along with the age of the child, you can also change the look of the shelf by removing the old decor and sticking a new one. The designs of the children's shelves are not too different. The floor structure or shelving for the children's room must be strong, as older children can often climb on various pieces of furniture.

Based on these considerations, it is best to strengthen the floor shelves to the wall. This will prevent them from accidentally falling under the weight of a large baby. It is better if the product is small in height, so that it is not scary if it falls.

Shelves in the children's room can have a variety of colors and patterns. They can be used for toy boxes. In general, the structure should be not only functional, but also safe.

Often, shelves on the wall play an exclusively decorative role. They attract attention, which is achieved due to the unusual shape of the product. It may have a contrasting color compared to the walls. It is impossible to place many items on such a shelf.

The construction of geometric shapes, i.e. squares with rectangles, is also an interesting idea. The structure can be painted in a bright color. Another interesting option is to use corners for small shelves. Knowing how to choose a decorative shelf for a wall or floor, you can make any room not only cozy, but also functional.

An excellent decoration of any interior will be light, neat, interesting wall shelves, which are an excellent alternative to bulky cabinet furniture. Assembled from specially purchased ready-made blocks, or made from improvised materials available in every home, these products will bring comfort and originality to any room.

Beautiful shelves will find their application in any of the rooms of the apartment, whether it is a kitchen, living room, bedroom, hallway or bathroom. With their help, the room will look more habitable, interesting, there will be additional storage space for any useful gizmos.

At the beginning, decide for what purposes the wall structure will be used, this will help you not to be mistaken with the required dimensions and strength of the device.

A shelf for heavy items, such as books, an aquarium, collectible dishes, potted plants, should be as reliable as possible, made of solid materials.

You can find a wide range of wall shelves at attractive prices in the First Furniture store.

A shelf in the bathroom for storing various cosmetics and bath accessories may not be so strong, but be sure to keep in mind that the materials for its manufacture must be moisture resistant.

If the wall shelf will be used only as an original art object for interior decoration, to perform the function of decorating a room, it is not supposed to exhibit objects and things on it, then any, even the most fragile materials, can be used for its construction.

Therefore, before starting the shelf design process, be sure to consider the following details:

  • full load on the structure;
  • fastening method;
  • compliance of the materials used with the purpose of the premises in which the installation is planned;
  • style and design of the product;
  • functional.

Types of shelves

Having wondered how to make a wall shelf with your own hands, first decide which type of future design will be more suitable for the chosen room, will fully comply with the assigned functions and your preferences.

Based on the design features, the shelves are:

  • closed and fully open;
  • linear and l-shaped;
  • with or without side railings;
  • through, or with a rear limiter;
  • single-tier or having several levels;
  • rounded and rectangular;
  • unusual shape, steeply inclined, diamond-shaped;
  • limited on all sides or consisting of one base, etc.

If you pay attention to the materials used for manufacturing, then wall shelves can be:

  • glass;
  • with elements of a mirror surface;
  • wooden;
  • made of MDF, chipboard, plywood;
  • polymer and plastic;
  • combined - using several types of raw materials.

Think about what materials will be the most preferable for self-construction of a shelf, more wear-resistant and reliable, and choose the option that suits you with all its characteristics.

Having studied numerous photos of the shelves made by yourself, you can choose the option that suits your taste the most and take it as a sample, try to make the most similar design, adapted specifically to your apartment.

Let's start designing

After you have decided on the model of the wall shelf, found and prepared all the necessary materials, it's time to move on to the creative process, that is, the creation of the product.

It is best to adhere to the following algorithm of actions:

Draw a rough sketch on paper, indicating the planned dimensions of the shelf on it, or even better - a full-fledged sketch of how the future shelf will look on the wall, indicate its dimensions.

Decide on the type of fastening, whether it will be building dowels, anchors, brackets that can withstand heavy loads, or the shelf will be mounted on a flexible base, for example, flagella, braided ropes, belts - these fasteners are only suitable for lightweight, used mainly as a decorative element , shelves.

Carry out the cutting of materials according to the required dimensions, or, in the case of using store blanks, prepare them for assembly. Proceed with the direct assembly of all parts and components, attach brackets, hinges or other prepared fasteners to the shelf.

After the complete assembly of the structure, if necessary, proceed to decorate it with the help of various elements: appliqués, buttons, beads, paints and varnishes, etc.

Make horizontal markings on the wall surface to ensure even attachment to the wall. Attach the finished structure to the place allocated to it, check the strength of the structure.

The process of making a shelf with your own hands has come to an end, now you just have to put your favorite collection on it, lay out a set of books or any other items for which the shelf was intended.

I would like to identify a few unusual, original and simple ideas for wall and floor shelves. It is not at all necessary to make a standard design, you can decorate the interior of the room:

Shelf with straps - to assemble it, you will need two flat boards and two strong leather straps.

Invisible bookshelf - you will need several steel brackets on which books are placed. Looking at this design, it seems that the books are just floating in the air.

A shelf of branches and curved snags - wooden parts are assembled into a multi-tiered structure, and the direct base for arranging objects is made of glass or plastic.

A wall shelf made of water pipes will be an excellent decoration for interiors of special styles.

Floor shelf made using glass bottles and base boards.

There are a lot of variations in the design of wall shelves, because such a piece of furniture can be made from almost any material at hand. Turn on your imagination and start the creative process of creating an unusual, aesthetic and functional piece of furniture.

DIY shelves photo

To organize the space in the room and give the interior a complete look, you can use wall shelves. Along with clocks, paintings, embroideries and other decorative elements, storage spaces on the walls really refresh the room, make it more habitable, residential, as you can place things on the shelves that will tell a lot about the owners of the interior: about their book preferences, about travel - and will also become a branch of the family album.

In furniture and interior stores, the choice of shelves is great, and often choosing the right item for you is not difficult. But a self-made shelf will make the interior unique, special, and besides, making it will bring a lot of positive emotions.

As you understand, there are countless design solutions for the manufacture and design of shelves. All designs are conditionally divided into 4 groups according to the method of attachment:

  • Classic hinged, installed on a free section of the wall. Most often designed to store books, so they are made in a rectangular shape. But nothing prevents you from showing imagination and giving the product an unusual look, making it square, round or consisting of several parts, as shown below.

  • Corner shelves designed to effectively use the place where 2 walls form an internal or external corner. They are successfully used not only for arranging literature, but also for arranging flowers, various souvenirs and small household appliances (for example, a small TV or printer).

  • Suspended, attached to a wall or ceiling with flexible stretch marks made of ropes or strings. One of the interesting solutions is a flower shelf suspended on belts.

  • Floor structures. These include open shoe cabinets and racks with a large number of cells for storing a variety of household items or tools.

Wood is the leader in environmental friendliness among all materials. Of course, the wooden details in the interior refresh it and bring it closer to nature.

The main advantages of wooden shelves:

  • Natural wood, even treated with varnishes and special products, collects dust much less than a product made from any other material.
  • Wood is a breathable material that does not emit harmful substances into the atmosphere.
  • Wooden parts are easily processed using tools that can be found in any, even a small workshop.
  • Wood is a classic material, familiar to the human eye and relatively inexpensive (unless, of course, the most expensive and rare types of wood are used).
  • The availability of wood still surpasses all other materials for the manufacture of shelves.

But with all its advantages, the tree also has a number of disadvantages:

  • Noble varieties of wood are quite expensive.
  • During production, a lot of waste is generated: shavings, sawdust, bark, and so on.
  • With poor processing or its special absence, the tree can leave splinters on the human skin when using the shelf.

To make a choice about the use of this or that material, of course, the owners, and in this article we will analyze several options for making wooden shelves with our own hands.

The simplest shelves on the wall, designed for books and small things, are a rectangular box, assembled by hand from boards or laminated chipboard. The latter option is convenient in all respects - the surface does not need to be processed, just adjust the dimensions and paste over the ends with veneer to match the color of the laminated layer.

Advice. It is not necessary to buy new chipboard if there are elements of old furniture left at home. To ennoble them, it is enough to putty unnecessary holes and stick a special film with a wood pattern. For example, make the shelf white, as shown in the photo.

To assemble boards from solid wood, it is necessary to properly prepare - plan, sand and round sharp corners. The procedure for manufacturing a hinged shelf is as follows:

  1. Based on the drawing, mark the material for trimming using a tape measure and a pencil. Cut 4 blanks to size.
  2. Treat the surfaces of the sanded boards with varnish, and glue the ends of the chipboard with veneer.
  3. On the sidewalls, mark the attachment points and drill holes together with the horizontal panels. Twist them together with furniture screws - confirmations and install decorative plastic plugs.
  4. Use a white-coated fiberboard sheet as the back wall, securing it with short self-tapping screws.

Note. In order for solid wood parts to last longer, they should be treated with an antiseptic composition before applying varnish.

Finally, screw the mounting brackets on the back or prepare holes for flush wall mounting. If you see fit, you can glaze the front of the shelf by installing opening or sliding doors.

The last step is to install the shelf on the wall in the planned place. There are 2 mounting methods:

  • on homemade or purchased brackets;
  • on hidden fasteners.

Regardless of the chosen mounting technology, the procedure remains the same. The first step is to mark the drilling points on the wall, guided by the mounting brackets. In this case, it is desirable to align the horizontal line between the points using the building level. The installation algorithm is as follows:

  1. Using measurements, determine the position of the points, mark them with a pencil and check the horizontal line between them.
  2. Drill holes. Hammer plastic plugs under the brackets and tighten the screws so that they protrude by about 5 mm.
  3. Hang the shelf on the brackets. If it sticks out strongly forward, then the screws need to be screwed in 1-2 turns.
  4. When mounting on hidden anchor rods (so-called titans), insert them into the holes drilled in the wall and tighten with a wrench. At the end of the shelf, make reciprocal holes of the desired depth and put it on the titans.

Advice. It happens that the floors and ceilings in the apartment are uneven and the shelf, suspended according to measurements, visually looks crooked. Then only the first point is measured, and the second is determined "by eye" after mounting the product on one bracket.

Corner shelves can be of various heights and have a different number of levels.

Consider the sequence of manufacturing a wooden corner shelf from slats 20 × 50 mm.

  • After examining the slats, you need to choose the most even ones, with a minimum number of knots - 2 frames will be made of them, 40 × 70 cm in size. For their manufacture you will need:

4 parts 70 cm long;

6 pieces of 30 cm.

  • Frame parts are preferably glued together with clamps.
  • Now it's time to make the shelves. They can be made:

Type-setting, gluing several rails, from which the details of the desired shape are then cut out and edged on the outside with a curly rail;

From a sheet of plywood;

From laminated chipboard. In this case, the cut must be sanded and pasted over with a furniture edge or in some other way, at your discretion;

From a fragment of old furniture, if the front is even.

  • The shelves are screwed to the frames and varnished.
  • It remains to fasten the hinges and hang the finished shelf in its place.

For a corner shelf, a set of 2 hinges is best suited, as in the illustration. If you hang the shelf on a loop with a wide ear, then you can then move the shelf along the wall and put on the second loop.

In a furniture store, shoe racks are not cheap. In order to save your budget, wooden shoe racks can be made at home. Special carpentry skills are not required for this. It's never too late to take on your hallway and build an original shoe rack. For such work, the master uses the following devices: a chisel, an electric drill, a hacksaw for wood, a grinder, a screwdriver. To make a drawing or marks on wood, you will need a ruler and a pencil.

Before starting work, you need to take into account the design of the future craft, its dimensions and functionality. Corner and round designs are the most popular. Most often, ready-made elements purchased in the store are used, the “raw” tree is used less and less. In addition to the above tools, you will also need wood glue, metal corners, sandpaper, varnish or paint, self-tapping screws.

First, the side walls of the desired height are cut out of the boards, for verticals. Then prepare bars for supports and transverse blanks. Immediately cut out four shoe shelves (elements). With the help of sandpaper, all workpieces are processed. Bars are attached to the side walls with self-tapping screws. Metal corners are attached to the end of the product. In turn, each shelf is applied to these bars. When the product is assembled, it is coated with varnish or paint of the desired color.

A wooden shoe rack can also serve as a comfortable ottoman. To do this, the upper part of the shelf is covered with a layer of foam rubber, which is fixed with a dense fabric or leatherette.

Wooden rack suitable for garage, shop, home. You can put books, flowers, unnecessary things, decor items on it. For the interior of any room, a shelving unit with light, clean lines and a modern design is suitable. Such a useful cabinet is the creed of many prominent architects, as it has a beautiful shape and excellent functionality.

To properly secure the shelves of such a product, you need strong racks. Special decorations for the racks are not required, but, if desired, you can close the back. The design of shelving racks is quite simple, so do not be afraid to start such work.

For strength, the racks are tied inside with long threaded rods. The convenience of making such a product is that you do not need to cut any corners or grooves. It is better to process each part even before assembly. Both solid wood and laminated plywood are suitable for the manufacture of shelving.

For work you will need: planer, jointer, drill, drilling machine. Each master himself sets the dimensions of the rack. All work begins with measurements and a drawing. This design can be done on the entire wall. Some manage to make a rack even around the window to put the entire library there. Shelves of any size are suitable for such a cabinet. It can be small, medium and very large. There are a lot of drawings according to which you can assemble a structure of any size.

Wall shelves can open up new storage possibilities or be a pretty backdrop for home decor. Small and large, bookshelf and kitchen, with hidden fastening and cantilever - almost any shelf can be made with your own hands, and not bought in a store. In this article, we presented 3 simple and budgetary ways to make shelves and shelves for various purposes, as well as 70 photo ideas for inspiration.

Universal hanging shelf

Hanging shelves on ropes have gained great popularity for a reason. They look much more spectacular than ordinary shelves, and at the same time they are really functional and versatile. They can be adapted to store heavy items such as dishes or flower pots, as well as light accessories. And thanks to the side holders, the shelf can also be used to store books.

Hanging kitchen shelf made from wooden boards and ropes

This cabinet shelf is suspended from the ceiling on ropes 2 cm thick. You can make such a shelf using our instructions, with the only difference being that the hooks in this case are attached to the ceiling and not to the wall

Such a homemade shelf made of rough wood and ropes will look great in the interior in the Scandinavian style, eco and country style, loft and rustic

And now we propose to move on to practice and make such a universal shelf with our own hands.

You will need:

  • 4 wooden boards (2.5 cm thick and any desired length, for example, 1 m long as in our master class);
  • Rope rope about 8 mm thick and 4 m long;
  • Drill and feather drill with a diameter of 10 mm (the drill should be slightly thicker than the rope);
  • 2 steel hooks and dowels for concrete with a diameter of 8 mm;
  • Pencil.

Basic materials needed to make a shelf

Master Class:

  1. With a drill and a pen drill, drill a hole in each corner of the board (pre-draw the markup with a pencil). Remember that the holes should not be too close to the edges.

  1. Paint your board with paint/stain, and then, when the finish is dry, finish with a matte varnish or wax (this is not necessary, but desirable - if you want to protect the shelf from wet cleaning and scratches).

  • If you want to preserve the natural color and texture of the wood, then simply sand the board on all sides with coarse sandpaper or a sander.

  1. Install the steel hooks on the wall: first, make marks with a level, then drill holes with a hammer drill with an 8 mm concrete drill, insert 8 mm dowels into the holes and, finally, screw the hooks into them.

  1. Cut your 4 meter rope into 4 equal lengths of 1 meter. Pass the ropes through the holes in the board, and then tie their ends on the back of the board in a knot as shown in the photo below.

  1. Now that a pair of ropes has formed on each short side of the board, tie the ends of each pair with a knot and hang on hooks. Make sure the shelf hangs straight and adjust the top knots if necessary. By the way, in the future you will be able to adjust the length of the ropes due to the upper knots.

You can experiment a little with the ways of fastening the ropes and make not only shelves, but even hanging racks with your own hands.

If you have an unnecessary drawer from a chest of drawers, then you can make such a beautiful shelf with dividers out of it. It can store something that should always be at hand or in plain sight.

You will need:

  • Box;
  • Paint of the desired color and brush;
  • Wax or matte varnish;
  • Wooden board or plywood of small thickness;
  • Carpentry glue or liquid nails;
  • Loops for the shelf;
  • Two dowels 8 mm and screws for them;
  • Perforator and drill for concrete 8 mm;
  • Phillips screwdriver;
  • Jigsaw;
  • Medium grit sandpaper;
  • A piece of wallpaper for decorating the back wall;
  • Putty for wood.

Master Class:

  1. Cut the dividers out of the plywood/wood plank to the size you want with a jigsaw, then sand them down on all sides with sandpaper.
  2. If the drawer has handles, remove them and seal the holes with putty.
  3. Paint the crate in 2-3 coats, letting each coat dry completely. If you want to achieve a worn effect, rub the drawer in some places with sandpaper.
  4. On the back wall of the shelf, glue a piece of wallpaper cut exactly to its size. You can stick wallpaper on wallpaper glue or any universal glue.

  1. Install the dividers with wood glue or liquid nails.

  1. Next, coat the box with wax or a matte varnish to protect the top coat from damage and moisture.
  2. On the back of the shelf, nail or screw two metal loops onto the screws.
  3. Make two holes on the wall, after marking with a level, insert dowels into the holes, and screw the screws into them, but not completely, but leaving about 5 mm. Well, that's all, now you can hang the shelf on the wall.

Shelf-hanger from ... the back of a chair

If you have an old wooden chair, or rather the back of a chair, then you can make a nice shelf with hooks out of it. It can be hung in the kitchen to be used for storing kitchen towels and aprons, and in the bathroom, and in the hallway.

Such a back of the chair was before the alteration ...

... and this became after!

You will need:

  • The back of a wooden chair;
  • A small plank of wood or plywood;
  • Three metal hooks;
  • Pendulum saw for wood, grinder or jigsaw;
  • 5 or more wood screws and a screwdriver / screwdriver;
  • Drill and drill 3 mm;
  • Sandpaper of medium grit (for removing old varnish / paint from the back of a chair) and coarse grit (for sanding a wooden shelf);
  • Black paint (if you want to create a worn effect), white paint or any other desired color, brush;
  • Wax or matte varnish;
  • Wood putty;
  • Joiner's glue.

Master Class:

  1. Cut the back of the chair to the desired size, after marking it out.

  1. In this project, the wooden base of the former hanger successfully approached for the manufacture of the upper shelf. You can also use a board made of wood or plywood - it must be cut to the desired size, and then all ends should be sanded. If possible, it is desirable to shape the edges of the workpiece with a milling cutter.

  1. With a medium grit sandpaper (for example, 220 microns), remove the old coating from the back of the chair, then paint both parts with black paint and leave to dry. This is necessary so that in the future the black layer shows through the scuffs of the top coating.
  2. It's time to attach the plank to the back of the chair. To do this, drill a small hole from each of its edges (on the outside, where you want to fasten the parts), then screw in the screws, drowning them flush. If your chair back has vertical crossbars like in this project, then it is advisable to also fasten them to the shelf with wood glue.

  1. Cover the attachment points with wood putty, following the manufacturer's instructions.

  1. Now screw the hooks to the bottom rail of your shelf, after marking it out. If necessary, the hooks can be painted (before attaching to the craft).

  1. If desired, screw a sign over each hook. The plate itself can also be decorated with numbers using a stencil, a small brush and black acrylic paint. However, you can come up with your own way to decorate the shelf.
  2. Paint the entire craft white (or a color of your choice) and then rub some sandpaper over to expose the black layer of paint.
  3. Finally, cover the shelf with a matte varnish, or better yet, wax it to protect the top coat from chips, moisture, and scratches.

In fact, shelves of various configurations can be made from chairs. Here are some more photo ideas for your inspiration.

Bathroom shelf from the back of a chair

Want to make a shoe rack without using a jigsaw or drill? This is possible, you just need to find / purchase a wooden pallet (pallet) and modify it a little.

  • Used pallets are often given away for free or sold for 100-200 rubles on flea market sites like Avito. You can also ask around for used pallets at local construction sites, warehouses and wholesalers. New pallets can be ordered in specialized online stores for only 200-250 rubles.

How to turn an old pallet into such a pretty country-style shoe rack with your own hands? Take some free time and follow the next step-by-step instructions.

You will need:

  • Wooden pallet;
  • Hand/electric grinder with triangular and standard attachment or grinder. If there is no machine, use a small wooden block and wrap it with sandpaper;
  • Sandpaper with grit, 40, 80 and 120;
  • Brush;
  • Gloves;
  • Soft rag;
  • Protective dust mask;
  • Moisture-proof primer for wood (preferably with an antiseptic);
  • Paint/stain and brush;
  • Wax or matte varnish.

Master Class:

  1. Sand your pallet from all sides or just the part that will be visible: first use coarse grit sandpaper to remove the roughest bumps, knots and dirt. Then continue sanding with medium to fine grit sandpaper. Next, remove the dust with a brush, vacuum the entire pallet and finally wipe it with a damp cloth.

This is what your pallet will look like after sanding

  1. Apply a water-repellent primer to the entire (!) pallet. It will protect the wood from rotting and moisture that will drain from the shoes, and prepare the surface for painting.
  2. When the primer is dry, start painting the shelf. You can paint the entire pallet or just the "front" part, as in this project.

  1. When the paint is dry, cover the pallet with a matte varnish or wax. If you want to preserve the texture and pattern of the wood, treat the pallet with a stain of the desired tone or completely cover the shelf with matte varnish / wax.
  2. Using a stencil, acrylic paint, and a brush, write "Shoes!" in the top center of the shelf. like in this project or any other word/drawing.

  1. The top of the shelf can be decorated with houseplants, such as succulents in containers and baking buckets.

  1. You can upgrade your shoe rack by embedding a bottom of wooden slats into the middle and top tiers (they just need to be cut to the right size and nailed down).

Here are some more photo ideas for making a shoe rack with your own hands.

With a little work with a nail puller, a hammer and a jigsaw, you can convert a pallet into a kitchen shelf, display shelf, flower or tool shelf.

Photo gallery of ideas

If you didn’t like any of the ways we proposed to make a shelf, we suggest looking for ideas in our photo gallery. Here we have collected other examples of wall shelves that you can make with your own hands from wooden boards, the same pallets, boxes and other easily accessible “lumber”.

Making a corner shelf with your own hands is as easy as shelling pears. To make one shelf, as in the photo below, cut a triangular blank of the desired size and with the required angle (rarely the inner corners of the walls are exactly 90 degrees) from plywood or wood 1.5-2.5 cm thick, as well as two small support strips (length one plank should correspond to the leg of the triangular blank, and the length of the second plank should be calculated by the formula: the length of the leg minus the width of the first plank).

All parts must be carefully sanded and then painted or simply waxed / varnished. Next, make markings using the building level both on the walls and on the planks (note that the holes will be through!). Drill holes in the walls, insert dowels into them and then hang the supports on the screws using the push-through mounting method. It is important to choose the right screw length - it should be calculated according to the formula: dowel length + support bar thickness + screw diameter. Finally, you just have to install the shelves and fix them either with wood glue or with nails / wood screws. If you want to hide the self-tapping screws, use wood putty, and then paint over the "patches" with paint to match the shelf.
