Tailoring of curtains description. How to sew curtains with your own hands at home. What curtains are easy to sew yourself

Every hostess wants to make her home cozy, and everyone understands that beautiful textiles should fit into the interior, regulate natural lighting and harmonize with other items.

You will have to decide on the quality of the fabric, pattern, color, think over the style, find and buy the required amount of material, order tailoring and not spend a lot of time and money on it.

Are you completely new to sewing? Then start with a simple model for giving or for the kitchen, but first of all decide what fabric you will sew them from. The following photos will give you ideas.

For a small window, choose a light-colored material or a combination of two fabrics.

A large panoramic window will be adequately decorated with French curtains. To keep them in beautiful, flowing waves and not move out under their own weight, choose lightweight fabrics, such as veil, tulle or organza.

Do not rush to throw away old curtains. They can be altered, decorated with beautiful accessories, and they will serve for many more years. The main thing here is to show resourcefulness and imagination.

Sew curtains from the remnants of the fabric, and the window in your country house will sparkle with different colors. A stencil will help cut shreds of the same size. Before making a solid canvas, iron them well.

Perfectly fit into the country or kitchen interior of the model in the fold on the ties or on the loops.

Curtains with ruffles, fringes or piping often look great. Additional elements make textiles rich and elegant. The main thing here is not to overdo it.

Do-it-yourself curtains

How to make patterns for self-tailoring curtains? Of the materials at hand, you will need the remnants of wallpaper, a meter ruler, a pencil, chalk or soap.

After you decide on the style and choose the material, feel free to get to work. You can cut simple curtains right away.

The technology of sewing complex models requires precise calculations, which must be transferred to the pattern, and then to the fabric.

We offer several samples. Substitute your measurements and you will get worthy window decorations.

Pattern of an asymmetric flip.

Asymmetric curtains for the kitchen.

Symmetrical swag for models with lambrequins.

If you have a non-standard window, then a beveled pattern will come in handy.

If you do not have a large table, then cutting is best done on the floor.

Recently, double-sided curtains have come into fashion.

How to lengthen curtains? There are several ways. If 10 centimeters are not enough, then loops can be sewn. Choose the material that suits the texture.

You can also sew a frill to the bottom of the curtain.

When the curtains need to be lengthened by 20-30 cm, you can sew in a transverse insert. The fabric should be in a contrasting color, then no one will guess that you lengthened them.

Here are some more samples.

DIY curtains step by step instructions

How to sew simple curtains for a kitchen or a room? The main thing is to correctly measure and prepare the fabric. Measure the length of the cornice and multiply it by a factor of 1.3. This will be the width. Add 6 cm to the hem. Decide on the length and add 15 cm to the design of the top and bottom.

To sew curtains for the kitchen or summer cottage, you do not need to make patterns. Wet the fabric with warm water, dry it and iron it. Then your curtains will not shrink or deform after the first wash.

From improvised means you can make beautiful decor and tacks. Use:

  • buttons;
  • tapes, belts, ropes;
  • braid, fringe;
  • beads;
  • soft toys, etc.

If you need to hem curtains, then choose one of three methods.

  1. Hidden seam by hand.
  2. Machine line.
  3. Special adhesive tape.

So that the line lies evenly and the fabric does not warp, bend it and iron it.

What other curtains can you sew yourself

Curtains may also be needed for interior openings, which will retain heat and add comfort. Choose Greek or London curtains. The first are distinguished by smooth shapes, lightness of natural material and light colors. Certainly there are characteristic antique patterns.

Greek style is the severity of clear lines. To avoid having to constantly adjust the folds, sew a thick curtain tape to the top.

Due to its simplicity, a pattern is not required. Measure the fabric, finish the edges, and drape neat waves.

The French marquise is distinguished by an abundance of lace, emphasizing the richness and solemnity of the interior.

The fabric is collected in vertical scallops, which gives elegance and splendor. The complexity of manufacturing such curtains lies in the correct calculations. All folds must be perfectly even. Choose a thin material, such as voile, organza, silk or cambric. In the photo you see a pattern for French curtains with lambrequins and curtains.

Keep in mind that such window decoration should be mounted on reliable wooden or metal cornices. The string for these curtains will not work. She will quickly sag.

So, the simplest curtains in a rustic or country style are easy to sew without special skills. This window decoration is great for giving or for the kitchen.

Sewing curtains on grommets: a master class. Video

We bring to your attention detailed instructions for sewing curtains on grommets. Grommets are rings that are attached to the top of window textiles. They are strung on a cornice, and they also create smooth, beautiful waves.

Rings are wooden iron and plastic of the usual, round shape of different diameters, and there are decorative ones.

Choose your own options. They must match the color of the fabric or pattern.

If a room or kitchen faces north and there is not enough sunlight in it, then sew curtains from light, light-colored fabric.

And vice versa, if the room is on the sunny, south side, then buy a denser fabric.

So, take the material, lay it out on a large table or floor. Measure the length of the cornice and multiply this figure by 1.5. This will be the width of your curtains. Then decide on the length, add 20 cm for the hem and the processing of the upper part. Buy a special grommet in advance. It is glued with a hot iron so that the top is rigid, keeps its shape and forms the desired drapery. Then sew the folds.

Attach one eyelet and circle the inner contour. The more often you do this, the smaller the creases will be. The distances between the eyelets should be the same.

Sun protection for terrace windows should be reliable and easy to use.

Choose modern blackout fabrics that do not let light through, do not fade, do not warp, do not get dirty and repel water.

If you need to increase the rigidity of the material, then use a gang. It happens:

  • on an adhesive basis and glued with an iron;
  • on self-adhesive film.

Bando allows you to make a hard lambrequin of any shape. Under it, you can sew combined sliding curtains with pleats, and your window will look rich, emphasizing the perfect taste of the hostess.

It is impossible to imagine a living space in which the windows would not be protected from prying eyes or excess light by curtains. Not a single designer can do without this item, choosing an individual interior. Today, shops and ateliers offer many different variations on the theme of curtains, curtains and other things that can decorate a window opening in a room, but sometimes a person wants to independently express his vision of beauty, which is why you need to know how to sew practical curtains with your own hands.

Step-by-step instructions: choosing a design

Before embarking on the practical realization of your dream of ideal curtains, you need to study the range presented a little. It is necessary to choose the types of curtains suitable for the existing interior. The most popular today are:

  • English curtains;
  • Roman curtains;
  • classic curtains with ties;
  • various lambrequins;

Sewing each of these types of curtains is not difficult. With detailed patterns and step-by-step instructions for each of them, it will take quite a bit of effort and time to work, and the result will be excellent. Having studied the features in detail and thoughtfully, you can quickly sew curtains with your own hands, which will not differ in quality from those produced in the atelier.

Lambrequins: how to sew?

Lambrequins are one of the most popular types of curtains in rooms. In order to sew them, you will need:

  • Fabric that matches the shade;
  • Pattern;
  • Sewing machine;
  • Threads, pins, needles.

The process of performing all the necessary actions is very simple, but the result will exceed all the expectations of the hostess, because lambrequins successfully complement most of the styles used today.

The first step in the work is the selection of fabric, here many variations open up, limited only by imagination. So for sewing the main part of the lambrequin, you can use a plain material, and make the side part or top and bottom patterned or contrasting in color. There are no strict rules at all.

After that, you can start the calculation. Usually, in order to sew a pelmet, an amount of fabric equal to a fifth of the length of the curtain is measured. Additionally, 10 cm should be added for hemming, hem, and the width is calculated from the window in the room. Each step is signed in detail in the appendix to the pattern or demonstrated at the master class. The upper part of the structure is hemmed so that a kind of pocket is formed, where the beam for the curtains will be placed. You can create this design with your own hands in a few minutes.

Folds can be made, but you can do without them. In the first case, you will need to fasten them with threads and iron them. At the end, when the lambrequin is sewn to the main curtain, it is the turn of its finishing, decoration, emphasizing the style. It is necessary to focus on the chosen fabric - light to decorate with beads, and heavy - with decorative cords or fringes.

How to sew roman blinds

As a rule, Roman blinds are sewn by lovers of private being indoors, since this type of curtain closes the window tightly. The first step to creating a Roman blind for a window is to measure it. After that, another 5 cm should be added to the resulting width for allowances, and the length should be increased by 10-15 cm. The hostess herself chooses the fabric, as in the previous version, based on the desires or the interior in the room.

It is not difficult to sew Roman blinds with your own hands, so you should not be afraid of the name. There are many options to choose from, so here you can show your imagination. The purchased material needs to be ironed well so that there are no wrinkles. The outlines of the pattern are highlighted with soap or chalk, taking into account allowances.

Adhesive tape should be attached to the bar or stick to which the Roman blind will be attached in the future. The same tape is attached at the top of the curtain. The whole do-it-yourself operation will take several minutes even for a hostess inexperienced in tailoring a Roman curtain. The bottom edge must be ironed, it is required to sew a finishing tape to it. The rings are attached to the insertion points of the rails. At the end, a cord is threaded through them and pulled tight, the excess ends are fixed to a knot and cut off.

English curtain: the nuances of work

This type of curtain is suitable for those whose interior is the embodiment of coziness and comfort inherent in the style of London houses. Such curtains will bring no less mystery to the interior than Roman ones, so sewing them with your own hands will be the right decision.

To get started you will need:

  • Satin fabric and ribbon;
  • Muslin natural.

Of course, the guideline for the height and width of the canvas will be the window opening, which you want to measure by adding about 10 cm more to the existing fabric, as the fabric will decrease due to the hems being produced and the formation of folds characteristic of this style. The place for sewing satin ribbons must be indicated in advance.

In order to do this, you will need to carefully pull out 2 threads from the fabric: one - along the upper edge of the fabric, the second - at a distance of about 15 -17 cm from it. According to the same scheme, you will need to mark the places and directions of horizontal satin ribbons. A novice seamstress can do all this with his own hands.

The pattern of English curtains is made on the basis of the drawing at hand, which can be found in a special magazine or on the website. After that, you will need to take the ribbons from the satin and tuck them 1 cm, then carefully iron and carefully, slowly hem, trying to make small stitches so that they are not visible. The main ribbons should be pinned using pins to the main fabric, and then stitched on a typewriter. If there are empty spaces between the vertical stripes of ribbons, it is recommended to sew a few more ribbons to create symmetry. The work instruction does not regulate the quantity, it all depends on the width and height of the window opening. Next, you should cover and chop off the ribbons with a strip of satin that is suitable in width, you need to focus on the elongated threads. The upper edges of the ribbons are fixed with a knot. The bottom of the curtain needs to be hemmed. It is not difficult to create such beauty with your own hands. The English curtain, just like the Roman one, is often used in country houses, dining rooms or kitchens, as it gives the interior a unique comfort that is characteristic of a quiet and measured life.

How to create simple curtains?

Step-by-step instructions for sewing simple and beautiful curtains with your own hands are also very easy to implement. It is suitable for those who are just trying on the role of a designer and a tailor rolled into one. Simple curtains, of course, do not carry complex structures, so there will be no problems with cutting out and sewing the product according to the existing pattern. If you want something unusual, then you can play a little, giving preference to curtains decorated in the form of bows. Such curtains will ideally complement, for example, a nursery or a kitchen. They do not require a chic environment, and therefore will give the interior the harmony and beauty of ordinary life.

Every housewife can create them with her own hands, it only takes a little attention and perseverance. Matter is measured in accordance with the window opening in the room, with the addition of 10 cm in width. As for the height, here you can show your imagination and create short curtains or vice versa, covering the window completely. For decoration, you will need a decorative cord or ribbon, as well as a fabric to match the main one chosen for sewing curtains.

The pattern of a simple curtain will not take much time, it is only important to remember that the drapery in this version has features and depends on the chosen style. So for the kitchen or dining room, cotton fabric is ideal, while for the living room you can choose massive and heavy velvet options or flowing silk.

A satin ribbon or cord is used as a decorative element, preferably in a bright or contrasting color. First you need to take a piece of fabric of a suitable size, lay it out on a flat surface and smooth it thoroughly to prevent wrinkles that will “eat” the fabric, and ultimately spoil the appearance of the future curtain. The side and bottom parts should be sewn with an overcast seam, trying not to tighten the threads too much. Next, you should hem the top edge, taking into account the width of the cornice in the room. The side seams are slightly gathered into an "accordion" with a thread. The number of stitches should not exceed 6, and the distance should not exceed 15 cm. After that, the main work can be considered completed. Now it remains only to hang the resulting curtains on the ledge in the room. As a final touch, you will need to carefully throw the satin fabric ribbon over the cornice with the curtain already placed on it and pull it tightly, forming the very decor elements - beautiful and light bows.

How to sew curtains is of interest to many women who would like to make beautiful curtains on their own, not only for summer cottages, but also for home. It is possible to sew curtains with your own hands, but this applies only to those models that do not require the use of complex technologies and special equipment. But beautiful, stylish and simply unusual curtains can be sewn at home. There are no great difficulties in this matter. It is enough to decide on the desired type of curtain, purchase the necessary material and get to work.

Sewing curtains with your own hands is a rather painstaking process, but the result is worth the time spent.

Preparation for sewing curtains at home

Sewing curtains with your own hands is a simple process, but everything will work out only if the height and width of the desired curtain are correctly and accurately measured. A huge role is played by how evenly and accurately it will turn out to align the curtain along the edges. Even the smallest error in the data obtained can completely spoil the product. Therefore, the curtain may turn out to be either too short or too long. Sometimes, after the finished curtain is already hung on the cornice, it turns out to be skewed, which, of course, was also not included in the plans of the needlewoman. This shortcoming can be corrected only if we are not talking about cheap tulle and curtains, on which there is no pattern. It is better to entrust such products to professionals.

Curtain edges should be framed using hemming, bias binding, or rolled hems. It is worth first deciding how the edges of the curtain will be processed. Since, for example, a rolled seam requires the use of an overlock, which can finish the fabric with a seam of the same name. But he does this sewing work with two threads. Therefore, it should be taken care of in advance.

How to sew curtains with your own hands

In order to sew a curtain with your own hands, you should definitely calculate how much bias tape and curtain tape you will need to buy. It is necessary to take into account this nuance, the coefficient of formation of the assembly of the curtain tape can be different, for example, 1.5, 2 or even 2.5. Therefore, with a curtain width of 2 m, it is strongly recommended that with a coefficient of 1.5, choose tapes of 3 m. Exactly the same amount you need to buy textiles for sewing curtains. After the curtain is pulled together with tape, with the help of special ropes, it will reduce its length to about 2 m.

A wide translucent braid is often used to sew curtains from delicate thin fabrics. A large curtain tape made of textiles is sometimes used in tailoring curtains or lambrequins. Often thin curtain tape is chosen to create curtains without draping. Curtains on the rings also have a narrow tape. In addition, tacks are used for them, which beautifully frame the window, letting in as much light as possible into the room.

It is very easy to process the edges with a rolled seam thanks to the overlock, but it is difficult to finish the curtain by bending it or using a bias tape. Professionals do not even resort to the help of an iron. After all, the cut edges of the curtains can be bent even without the use of a special holder.

To do this, lay an even line, which has approximately 0.1 mm along the edges of the fold. But novice needlewomen will definitely have to use the iron 2 times when processing the edges of the curtain. After that, you need to reliably sweep with a thread, which also applies to curtain tape.

In order to recreate the curtain you like with your own hands, before sewing it, it is strongly recommended that you familiarize yourself with the technological requirements for curtain and tulle textiles. It is also necessary to take into account the real possibilities of a home sewing machine. The thickness of the needle and thread should be chosen so that they are suitable for the intended fabric. The sewing thread should be thin, strong, and also elastic. It is best to take a needle that is not very old, because if it is blunt or bent, then there is a high probability that it will simply ruin the fabric. On many types of textiles, such a tool will not only leave unnecessary and very noticeable traces of processing, but also form strong puffs.

Before you start sewing curtains, it is highly recommended to check the thread tension well in the sewing machine. In addition, in no case should we forget that the pressure of the tissue holder determines how tight and reliable the stitches will be. Then you need to properly adjust the height of the rack teeth so that there are no wrinkles on the organza or tulle during sewing.

The function of the highly raised rack teeth is to sew cloth and drape fabrics. For very delicate textiles, the height of the teeth should be as low as possible. During this process, it is imperative to check the pressure force of the holder on the workpiece. If at least one of these rules is not observed, the stitch will be too tight. Such an error cannot be corrected by any iron in the world.

If you need to lower the fit of textiles while sewing a curtain, many professionals simply pull the end of the curtains with your hand to their side.

But this method is fraught with consequences, since you can break the needle or deform the bottom of the curtain. As a result, the edges of the curtains will be wavy. It is best to stretch the fabric with both hands. Thanks to this method, it is possible to avoid a tight fit of textiles.

In no case should you install too small a stitch, as it will not strengthen the curtain in any way. Because if it is necessary to open it, the needlewoman will have to spend quite a lot of her time, given that the total length of the stitches on one curtain can be about 15 m. And double curtains simply do not accept this.

Sewing curtains with your own hands is a very real and not so difficult task. To make an ordinary curtain, you do not need special skills and long exercises. The main thing is to be able to sew, correctly calculate the required dimensions and choose the right fabric. Moreover, a self-sewn product will become a real highlight in the interior of any room.

measurements

Correctly made measurements are the first and very important step to a successful result.

But such beauty can be sewn by yourself! Moreover, today on the Internet there are a large number of photos and videos with step-by-step instructions for sewing curtains.

First you need to measure the length of the cornice - this will be the basis of the width of the canvas. The length of the curtain can be up to the window sill, fall a little beyond its line, not reach a couple of centimeters to the floor, touch the floor a little, or even lie on it.

  • technological allowances for processing the upper and lower edges - we add 25 centimeters to the main measurements along the length;
  • when calculating the width, you need to decide whether it will be a straight curtain without folds or with drapery. Typically, the drape factor is two. That is, we multiply the length of the cornice by two, plus ten centimeters for processing the edges. It should be noted that this coefficient is suitable for dense and medium density fabrics. For light materials (organza, silk, chiffon, taffeta), it is better to take a factor of three. You can check the degree of compliance of the material to drapery in the following way: take a fabric with folded folds in your hand and raise it as high as possible. So you can easily determine how much stock of fabric is needed to form the desired folds.

It is better to always take a cloth with a margin, so as not to miscalculate. And the leftovers can always be used for sewing tiebacks or pelmets.

It is correct to make measurements with a tape measure, since an ordinary centimeter is not practical in this matter

With the measurements decided, now you need to choose the right fabric.

Choosing a fabric

For curtains, it is better to take semi-synthetic fabrics. Natural materials are known for their environmental friendliness, hypoallergenicity and, of course, look noble in the interior. But it should be noted that they quickly deteriorate under the influence of sunlight and require special care. Also, natural panels shrink heavily after washing, so if you decide to use this option, be sure to add at least 50-60 cm to the calculated measurements.

The most durable are 100 percent polyester with the addition of cotton, as well as viscose. Satin, jacquard, velvet, coarse calico, tapestry, taffeta are suitable for curtains. For tulle - chiffon, organza, veil.

Particular attention should be paid to the calico. Coarse calico curtains are very practical, environmentally friendly and protect well from sunlight, can withstand a large number of washes. However, when measuring, it should be borne in mind that the calico shrinks, so it is imperative to calculate the margin.

Your choice should also be combined with the interior and style in which the room is made. Each style is characterized by the use of certain panels, with an abundance or absence of decorative elements.

For small rooms with a low ceiling, it is better to give preference to light or semi-dense materials.

When choosing a color scheme, it should be borne in mind that dark colors visually reduce space, light, pastel, on the contrary, expand. A horizontal pattern will visually expand the room, while a vertical pattern will create the effect of greater height.

What you need

Before sewing curtains, prepare yourself:

  • the cloth;
  • a sewing machine (in its absence, of course, you can get by with a needle and thread, although this will require much more effort and time);
  • pins;
  • threads;
  • ruler, pencil, scissors;
  • sketch.

Let's get to work, cut

And now you have already calculated the dimensions, prepared everything you need. Where to start the sewing process itself?

Initially, it is necessary to cut the fabric according to the prepared sketch. Before that, carefully inspect the canvas for defects and determine the front and back sides.

Some fabrics, especially natural fabrics, require special treatment before cutting to prevent the curtain from shrinking after washing. Usually this process involves uniformly moistening the fabric from a spray gun, then ironing it through gauze until it dries completely. If there is a pattern, first perform these steps on a small patch to check if it will drain. Be sure to iron the synthetics from the wrong side before cutting. Next, fold the product in half with the front side inward, edge to edge, and pin along the edges with pins. Cut it into two pieces according to your measurements. Then individually fit each piece to the measurements and cut off the remnants. From these remnants, it will be possible to subsequently cut out details for decorating the curtains.

Cutting - the very first and no less important stage on the way to sewing curtains

open swag

Swag is a part of a lambrequin, which is a semicircle with folds. Usually the swag is cut at an angle of 45 degrees, which, when folded, gives a very beautiful fold. If there are drawings, then cutting at such an angle does not always work out. In this case, cutting is carried out along the warp thread. It is very important to keep proportions. The sagging of the swag should be half of its length along the eaves.

The swag pattern will look like a semicircle. Initially, you need to build a right angle with a vertex. From it to the right we set aside half the size of the product, plus a couple of centimeters for processing the edges. The second segment, equal to the depth of the product, taking into account the drapery coefficient, is laid down. Based on these data, we draw a circle. After processing the edges, we sew the mounting tape.

When cutting, be sure to take into account the stocks that were calculated earlier for processing the edges.

How to sew curtains?

Finishing the side edges

You choose the width of the edging according to your taste. Usually it varies from one and a half to three centimeters.

We bend the edges of the selected width to the wrong side and iron. Then we bend again to the same size and pin it with pins. Next we sew the sides.

We process the bottom

We bend the bottom edge by 5 cm, iron it, then bend it another 5 cm and pin it with pins. We build up the bottom.

We process the top

We bend the upper edge by one and a half centimeters, iron and sew. Next, we take the curtain tape, bend its side edge by one and a half centimeters and apply it with loops upwards on the front side of the curtain. We combine the top edge of the curtain and tape. Next, we attach the tape to the curtain with pins in a checkerboard pattern. Having reached the end, we cut the tape, taking into account one and a half centimeters of stock. We bend this stock and attach it to the side edge of the curtain.

Then it is necessary to stitch the tape along the inner edge to the curtain, retreating 1 mm from the edges.

At the end of the pin, we take out and tie the threads of the curtain tape into a knot from the right and left sides. When pulling on the strings, a beautiful drapery is formed.

Using a thread on a curtain tape, you can create a beautiful drapery, as shown in the photo.

So you sewed your first curtain yourself!

At the very end, the finished product must be ironed well, paying special attention to the seams and edges.

This is a simple step by step guide for beginners.

Naturally, you can also sew more complex models, lambrequins, use a combination of different types and shapes of fabrics. But for this you will need some experience in sewing and cutting complicated parts.

Also on the Internet you can find a huge number of videos that will help you visually study each stage and the subtleties of tailoring curtains.

Eyelets can also be used to attach curtains.

Decor from leftovers

From leftovers and shreds, you can sew interesting decorative elements for curtains that will give them a more beautiful and sophisticated look.

We are talking about pickups and lambrequins.

Lambrequins to sew with your own hands will be somewhat difficult. We wrote about cutting parts for a simple lambrequin above. After processing the edges of the cut product, stitch the curtain tape to the top and iron. Also, it is worth paying attention that today on sale you can find self-adhesive material - thermal bando. With its help, even a beginner can make a very beautiful lambrequin that will decorate the curtain. For this you need:

  • attach the pattern to the thermoband and cut along the contour without allowances;
  • cut the same element on the fabric, but with an increase in allowances;
  • glue the fabric to the thermoband with an iron;
  • attach curtain tape.

This technique is very simple and will allow you to make a curtain decoration without much effort and time.

In any case, on the Internet you will find a lot of videos on sewing lambrequins. They will help you better understand the features and techniques of sewing this decorative element.

From the leftovers, you can also sew a variety of pickups. This can be a longitudinal Velcro tape or processed ribbons, which can then be tied into beautiful knots or bows. To find out the size of the pickup, measure the circumference of the gathered curtain and take into account a couple of centimeters from all edges for processing. The tiebacks can later be embroidered with beads, small pebbles, sequins, sew a fringe to the edges. From the remaining shreds, you can sew flowers with which to decorate the tiebacks.

Patchwork can make beautiful ties for curtains, for example, as in the photo

A skilled housewife has everything in her hands. If she wants to learn how to sew curtains with her own hands with patterns, then she will definitely succeed. With a little patience and diligence, she can even make a lambrequin on her own. The main thing is to strictly follow the instructions, then there is a 100% guarantee that you will not spoil the material.

Where to start?

First, determine the model of curtains that you like. It is important to decide what is the purpose of the future product. In the first place may be functionality or aesthetic component.

Start by looking at the sketches of the curtains, you need to find out how much the window opening will be closed, how to make patterns, what additional elements will be needed to sew the structure. Read a kind of instructions for beginners, it will help you understand at each stage.

Now you can start taking measurements. You will also need to find out which dimensions of the curtains are best for you. Do not ignore certain nuances:

  • The length of the cornice matches the minimum size. Shield yourself from intense natural light by adding approximately 20 cm.
  • For fans of styles with folds, an additional 1/3 of the length is added to the length of the cornice.
  • Curtain length by many factors. The product must match the style of the interior. Your fantasies and preferences play far from the last role. The canvas can completely close the window, reach the floor or cover only 1/3 of the window. To make the short model look beautiful, the curtain should completely hide the upper wall.

What features of the cut should a beginner know about

Sewing curtains according to ready-made patterns is a doable task. The simplest design option is considered to be a pattern of curtains at an angle of 90 degrees. This design is done on the material. You just need a ruler with chalk.

When the hostess already has experience, and she wants to sew a more complex model, it is better for her to first make a sketch on paper. It is not difficult to transfer the designed variation of the pattern to the material.

Leave seam allowances: 2 cm for the hems, but this increases to 10 cm for the bottom hem.

If you decide to make a lambrequin, cut out the part at an angle of 45 degrees. In the future, this will simplify not only sewing, but also drapery.

How much material is needed to sew a lambrequin?

The amount of material is determined by the number of swags, ties and the presence of other decor. When the elements overlap each other, the length of the overlap is at least a third of the width.

We make a swag pattern

For work, prepare a vertical surface and a multiplier cord. You will:

  • On the pattern above, mark the estimated width of the swag, for this, mark 3 points - 1,2,3.
  • Further divide the distance 1 and 2 into 3 equal parts and mark 2 more points here - 5.6.
  • Determine the height h and mark it with point 4.
  • Connect 1, 2 and 4 together. Use a special rope for this. Tie a pencil to one end and a needle to the other.
  • You can proceed to the design of the circle from below. The height marked 4-4a is 50-80% as a percentage of the width of the curtain.
  • Connect 5 with 6 to get a straight line 1a-2a, marking the place of the folds.
  • Don't forget to let the fabric in for 2cm seams.

Cutting out the scarf model

The result is a one-piece fabric, which is fixed by hand on the eaves. Take a look at the photo of the curtain pattern, the proposed design solutions are comparable to classic models. The height of the swag should not exceed 1/6 of the window.

The scarf model is considered one of the lightest, so it can be cut on the fabric. It is important to follow certain rules:

  • Determine the length of the cornice and the amount of sag you need. Imagine what a pelmet decorated with embroidery will look like. To do this, hang a string on the eaves, mark the value for the height and the length of the sag.
  • At the top, mark the middle to set aside the coattails.
  • Below the center mark an arc of sagging. Connect the marks with the marks along the width of the eaves. Sew on the marked line
  • Pull off the material, and decorate the place of the tie with bows or other decor.
