Slate wave fence. How to make a slate fence with your own hands: wave and flat, photo, video. How to choose what you need for fencing

A slate fence is a design that has not been seen very often lately.

This budget version of the fence was replaced by more durable, reliable and aesthetic options.

However, in some cases, slate becomes, if not the only, then the best choice for building a fence.

Most often, to make a slate fence (a cost calculator can be easily found on the Internet), they use material dismantled from the old roof, so the appearance and quality characteristics of such a fence leave much to be desired.

The cost of a new slate sheet is quite affordable for the average consumer, and the fence will have the following undeniable advantages:

  • sufficient durability. The average service life of a properly executed slate fence is measured in several decades;
  • affordable cost compared to many other, more modern building and finishing materials;
  • unpretentiousness in care. A feature of the material is its resistance to decay and corrosive changes, as well as high resistance to temperature extremes;
  • simplicity and speed of self-assembly, as well as no need to involve specialists or use expensive professional equipment and tools.

A creative approach allows you to get a fence that is distinguished by a presentable and very original appearance. The most noticeable disadvantage of a slate fence is its increased fragility. A point, strong enough blow, can cause cracking.

A fence made of flat slate is maintainable, so the damaged area can be restored with steel overlays, and a sheet of wave-type building and finishing material can only be completely replaced.

Fencing examples

A significant mass of slate sheet involves the construction of sufficiently strong load-bearing structures, therefore, when choosing the type and external design of the fence, you must definitely focus on this feature.

There are also a few key factors to consider:

  • flat slate sheets are more expensive, but allow you to make fences with the most aesthetic appearance;
  • one of the popular varieties of flat sheets is pressed slate, which is characterized by high weight and the ability to withstand a fairly serious level of load;
  • flat sheet slate is recommended to be laid in supporting structures, represented by a frame based on metal corners, which allows to increase the strength of the fence, and also significantly improves the appearance;
  • fences based on wave slate foliage are mounted very simply, and the material is overlapped, with accurate alignment of the waves.

Slate fence: photo of a combination with a stone

Among other things, slate sheets are perfectly combined with other materials, including brick, metal, wood and stone. Therefore, with the right approach to choosing a design, you can independently build a very original and stylish, inexpensive fence.

In addition to sheets based on asbestos cement, metal and plastic type slate is often used for the installation of fences. The second option is more preferable, due to the ability to build the lightest and most translucent fence.

For those who do not want, like everyone else, there is a large and interesting material and their design features.

And when you want to not only fence yourself off from your neighbors, but decorate your backyard, decorative fences come to the rescue. You will find some interesting design ideas in.

Useful video

The video shows the entire process of installing a new slate fence, except for concreting the fence posts:

At the final stage, the erected fence is decorated by applying an acrylic or alkyd-acrylic coloring composition. Also, a decorative plaster coating can be applied to slate sheets, which will make it possible to obtain not only an economical and practical, but also a very attractive option for fencing.

Slate is a material not so popular for fencing. For fences, elements left over from the roof are mainly used, but sheets have appeared on sale that do not need decoration and additional finishing. And in skillful hands, a slate fence will decorate the estate with little spending.

Depending on the raw materials used, it differs in structure, shape, working properties.

Users often search:

Let's analyze each type in detail.

Asbestos-cement

Standard slate. Suitable for both roof and fence. Sheets are obtained by pouring a mixture of asbestos, cement and water into molds. Asbestos fibers create a strong mesh, which increases the strength, resistance of the material to stress. Available flat or wavy.

Among the important advantages of using sheets for the construction of a slate fence, it is worth noting:

Of the minuses - fragility. When falling, the sheets crack or break into pieces. If damaged, the wavy elements are no longer subject to repair, while the flat ones are reconstructed with the help of metal overlay plates.

In addition, during the cutting of slate, caustic asbestos dust is released, which is harmful to the respiratory system. Therefore, you need to work in a protective mask or respirator.

slate

Natural material. It looks like stone plates of different sizes. Most often used in the arrangement of the roof.

For fences, it is used as an auxiliary material when it is necessary to decorate concrete or combined sections. Differs in durability, resistance to influences of environment, does not need additional finishing.

Other types

In the building materials market you can find:

  1. plastic slate. The basis is a high-quality polymer. It has different degrees of light transmission. It is applied to a roof, walls in summer arbors, greenhouses. In addition to the metal frame, it will become a beautiful fence.
  2. Euroslate. This name was given to Ondulin, Aqualine, Nulin and other roofing materials. They have different production technologies, but each type is based on polymer and pressed cellulose. Waterproof. Not applicable for fence construction.
  3. Rubber. Composition - recycled rubber, fiberglass waste. Obtained by pressing. It has light weight and high strength. It is rarely used for the construction of fences, more often for roofing.

There are other types of slate, but when planning the construction of a fence, you should choose asbestos cement. The design will turn out to be inexpensive, it will not be difficult to make it even for one, and with the right painting, it will look beautiful.

Sheet types: dimensions, working properties, cost

A homogeneous mixture of asbestos, cement and water is put into molds and pressed, and then dried at high temperatures.

The result is a wavy or flat slate. We will analyze the nuances of each of the materials.

flat

In accordance with GOST 18124–95, such sheets are:

  1. Pressed (LP-P). It has a high level of strength - 23 MPa (kgf / cm 3), which is many times more than the second type. Impact strength - 2.5 kJ / sq. m. Heavy in weight. Frost-resistant. To get a reliable design, it is recommended to install a fence from flat pressed slate.
  2. Unpressed (LP-NP). In many technical characteristics, it is inferior to pressed ones. Bending strength does not exceed 18 MPa. The only advantages are light weight, low price.

The most popular sheet sizes are:

  • 2*1.5m;
  • 1*1.5m;
  • 3*1.5 m.

Thickness from 6 to 10 mm.

The use of flat slate requires the arrangement of a reliable foundation and fasteners. The average price is 700-800 rubles. for 1 sheet.

Mounting to poles is carried out in two ways:

The first option is considered more durable, since the frame protects the edges of the sheet from damage. At the same time, the slate remains solid without holes. The frame must be attached to the supports by welding.

The second option is easier. Using a similar technology, wavy elements are mounted.

wave

Three types are produced:

  1. IN. Wave sheet with regular profile. Length - 112 cm, width - 68 cm. It is used for arranging the roof of buildings with a height of not more than 15 m.
  2. VU. Reinforced wave. Length - 280 cm, width - 100 cm. It is used as a facing material for roofs of industrial and industrial enterprises.
  3. SW. Unified Wave. Length - 175 cm, width - 112.5 cm. It is considered universal, since it is used both for the roof of private houses, industrial areas, and for various types of fences.

The unified sheet profile is considered the best for a reliable wave slate fence, because it has a high density, a convenient working width.

The minimum weight of 1 sheet is 18.5 kg, the maximum is 26 kg, the thickness is up to 7.5 mm.

Running slate dimensions:

  • 1.75*1.125 m for 8 waves;
  • 1.75*0.98 for 7 waves.

The average price of a standard sheet is from 200 rubles.

The elements are fastened to metal or wooden joists. In this case, the pillars can be made of different materials.

Often they buy colored sheets that do not need finishing, but cost at least 50% more than standard ones.

Do-it-yourself step-by-step installation of a slate fence

The construction instructions are in many ways similar to the erection of a corrugated fence, but there are still differences in the set of tools, the order of fasteners, and the finishing of sheets.

A preliminary cost estimate is drawn up, the total cost of the work is calculated.

The location of the future structure is correctly selected, taking into account the requirements of SNiP, so that in the future there will be no disagreements with neighbors.

Slate fence scheme: section width 2500 mm, frame height 1800 mm, sheet height 2000 mm, post driving depth 1200 mm.

Necessary materials, tools

Their list is as follows:

Safety precautions should not be neglected. Work should be carried out in overalls, when cutting sheets into parts, wear a respirator, an eye mask.

Marking, foundation

After preparing tools and materials, you need to proceed to cleaning the surface of the earth at the construction site from plants, roots, and debris. Excess soil can be taken out with a wheelbarrow to the garden.

The foundation is selected not only according to the load. An important role is played by the relief features of the site.

Under the slate fence, it is allowed to equip both strip and columnar foundations, and other bases.

Pole installation

Wooden or metal ones are often chosen for wavy slate, for flat sheets.

In rare cases, erected and mounted.

For a durable fence, metal poles are chosen, attaching other elements to them by welding.

lag mount

Let's give an example of an inexpensive option for a fence - fixing wooden logs to metal poles.

Work order:

  1. We prepare the required elements immediately after pouring the foundation. Then there will be no downtime.
  2. We cut the steel corner with a grinder into strips 200–250 mm long.
  3. We drill holes along the edges so that it is convenient to fasten the logs from the timber.
  4. We weld the strips to the supports in two places: with an indent from the top by 200 mm and from the bottom.
  5. We treat the timber for the log with an antiseptic. It is recommended to take a section of 50 * 130 mm.
  6. We drill holes through the prepared places. We fix the beam to the supports with coupling bolts.

If you use profile pipes for fastening, then the procedure is performed both with and without a steel corner, only by welding.

Sheet mounting

Fastening of flat sheets is carried out in a pre-prepared frame of steel corners.

There is an alternative, more popular and simple, but it is inferior in reliability. Suitable for wave, flat slate.

The order is as follows:

If you need to cut the sheet into pieces, you should moisten it with water beforehand so that less asbestos dust is released during cutting.

How to paint the fence, the choice of paintwork

Slate processing provides the following benefits:

  • prolongs the life of the sheets, prevents the appearance of cracks;
  • the surface does not gather dust, looks smoother;
  • you can give the fence the color you need, the degree of haze;
  • protects slate from the formation and development of moss, lichen;
  • the fence looks nicer.

You need to choose paints and varnishes carefully, since not all compositions are suitable for processing a slate surface.

  • alkyd;
  • acrylic;
  • silicone (organosilicon);
  • enamel type "liquid plastic".

For pre-treatment, special protective primers are used. You need to choose them so that they are compatible with the paint.

It is worth noting that when using most paints, priming is optional, with the exception of acrylic.

It is this type that is considered the best for a slate surface despite the high cost. It protects against fading, creates a protective film.

Primer, paint is applied with any convenient tool:

  • roller;
  • brush;
  • spray gun.

Popular colors are:

  • brown;
  • green;
  • red.

But if the desired tone is not in the finished form, you can apply tinting, that is, add a tinting dye of the desired shade to the purchased paint, which is purchased separately. Stir better with a construction mixer.

How to paint slate

The consumption of the product per linear meter depends on the chosen method of application (brush, roller, spray gun). Approximate figures are always indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging.

  1. Basic . The entire surface with ends, joints, corners is stained.
  2. Finishing. Apply after the first one has dried. Gives the structure a uniform uniform color.

If necessary, the number of layers can be increased, but it is up to you to decide whether to do this or not.

Fence decoration

You can decorate the fence not only by painting in one color.

Many owners acquire ready-made colored sheets of contrasting tones, alternating them with each other. Due to this, the structure turns out to be brighter and more interesting.

Multi-colored ornaments and landscapes look beautiful on slate. Such a fence will have no analogues, it will become a real author's work.

The option of decor with a stone is allowed. But this is an expensive solution and is rarely used by hosts.

Photo gallery

The photo below shows different ways of mounting slate sections, interesting ideas for decorating such structures.

Despite the fact that slate is not so in demand in the construction of fences, with a creative approach, the design will turn out to be reliable and beautiful. At the same time, the costs from the family budget will be minimal.

It is unlikely that today it would occur to anyone to specifically buy slate for the construction of a fence. Against the backdrop of a variety of modern building materials, slate looks frankly poor, although for the price this is not the cheapest option. But if there is an opportunity to put into action and give a second life to the slate, which was removed, for example, from the roof, then you can build a blank fence around a summer house, a farm, a small industrial enterprise. It is quite possible to build a slate fence on your own.

Issue price

Many people remember the time when there was an abundance of slate on the construction market, and there was practically no competition for this building material. That is why slate fences were more common than others. And not because it is cheap or beautiful, but because other options either cost a pretty penny or simply did not fit the standard design of unpretentious buildings.

To date, a slate fence is not the cheapest option. This is in the event that the material will have to be purchased. Among the budget types of fences, a welded mesh, a type-setting wooden fence can compete. The cost of slate at a price can be correlated with the cost of a profiled sheet. Slate will look like a very budget option against the background of the cost of brick, metal or natural stone.

Benefits of slate fencing

Despite the huge number of options, a do-it-yourself slate fence is simple, fast, fairly inexpensive, and neat. So, it makes sense to consider all the advantages and disadvantages of slate. It has been successfully used in construction for many decades. During this time, many advantages of this material have been revealed:

  • The average price category of the material indicates its availability to the buyer with different financial capabilities. However, do not forget that additional costs will have to be incurred for the purchase of support poles, material for the frame, and fasteners.

Note!At a cost, a flat slate fence will be slightly more expensive than a wave slate fence.

  • Slate fencing in regions with a temperate and dry climate will last a very long time. But mechanical damage will immediately lead to the end of the service life of such a structure.
  • Slate is a non-combustible material. But at very high temperatures, it cracks. Therefore, during a fire, the fence is unlikely to withstand, but it will not emit harmful combustion products.
  • This building material is resistant to temperature extremes characteristic of a temperate climate. This gives it advantages over other popular material - corrugated board.
  • Caring for slate fencing is very simple. In case of damage, individual sections are easily changed. It can be cleaned, washed, painted. Although the latter is not particularly necessary, because today you can find colored slate on sale.
  • A slate fence is unlikely to save from street noise. But during hail or heavy rain, the noise from it will be much less compared to profiled sheet, stainless steel, tin or metal.
  • The material is resistant to aggressive chemicals, corrosion, and does not conduct current. The fence from it does not let in light and is a reliable protection from prying eyes.

Disadvantages of slate fencing

Slate, like any other material, has some disadvantages:

  • A controversial drawback is the presence of asbestos in the slate. Asbestos is harmful to human health if the dust is inhaled during cutting or while working in a warehouse or production shop. During operation, slate does not emit any harmful substances, therefore it is considered a safe material.
  • The heavy weight of the material requires special attention during installation. In order to avoid tilting the fence during operation, care should be taken to ensure the reliability of the frame.
  • In regions with a humid climate, slate fencing is not the best option. Under the influence of moisture, it will be covered with moss, darken and crack.
  • This building material is not resistant to mechanical stress. Any damage will require replacement of the sections. Over time, if the fence begins to slope, the slate sheets may begin to crack from contact with the base, as well as at the attachment points with support pillars.
  • Attractive slate fencing can not be called. Made of wave slate, it looks very cheap. A more attractive option is to enclose the area with flat slate.

Which slate to choose for the fence

Thinking about how to make a slate fence with your own hands, you need to decide on the type and features of the installation.

The building materials market offers two types of slate - flat and wave. Flat slate is more expensive. It is believed that the appearance of the fence from it is more aesthetic. A kind of flat slate - pressed. It is much heavier than usual, but it also withstands a serious load. When installing the fence, flat sheets of slate are recommended to be laid in a metal frame from the corners. Thus, two tasks are solved: the strength of the structure is enhanced and the appearance is improved.

Flat slate fence on a metal corner

It is much easier to mount a fence from a wave slate than from a flat one. The sheets will have to be overlapped, carefully combining the waves.

Features of mounting a slate fence

It is quite possible to install a slate fence on your own, without the involvement of specialists, without building skills and complex tools. You just need to follow simple recommendations and consistently perform all stages of work.

How to make markup

The marking procedure for a slate fence is no different from the identical stage of work in the construction of other types of fences. The area around the perimeter of the future structure must be cleared of debris, branches, stones, and then leveled. Pull the thread along the line of the fence that has not yet been built. You can fix it on pieces of reinforcement, wooden pegs or steel bars.

Immediately you need to make marks in the places where the support pillars will be installed. In order to avoid difficulties during the installation of the entire structure, these marks must be made especially carefully. It should be borne in mind that slate cannot be built up or welded. And in case of deviation of one slate sheet by several centimeters, all subsequent sections will have to be moved with the transfer of supports. Accurate marking will facilitate all subsequent work.

How to install support poles

Depending on which pillars and what width of slate sheets you have chosen for the fence, pits are made for the supports. Depth can vary from 50 to 80 centimeters. The deeper the holes, the less likely the fence will move to the side, especially if the structure is high.

You can concrete the support pillars in one of the following ways:

  • Pour liquid solution
  • Fill with gravel and pour with concrete
  • Install with stone or metal spacers

To protect metal poles from corrosion, special attention must be paid to the part that is being deepened: wrap it with roofing material, paint it with oil paint or treat it with grease or used engine oil.

Section mounting

There are several ways to mount the frame and install sections on bolts:

  • Between the posts, fix two lines of a horizontal base. These lines can serve as a corner or a profile pipe. On such a base, the slate is screwed with bolts and nuts. Given the fragility of the material, it is necessary to reduce the load of fasteners on slate sheets. To do this, washers or silicone or rubber gaskets are used on both sides of the mount.
  • Another way: in addition to metal crossbars, build a concrete base in the form of a curb or pillar. Another option is a strip foundation. This will help to better hold the weight of the fence, as well as prevent cracking of the slate at the attachment points.
  • The next option is to do without a foundation and leave a gap between the ground and the slate at the level of 7 - 8 centimeters. The fence will not come into contact with wet soil, which means it will last much longer. A metal crossbar is welded between adjacent pillars at the right level from the ground. It should be wide enough so that wave slate can be easily installed on it. Connection method - bolted.
  • The easiest option is to install a fence made of flat asbestos-cement sheets. They are installed on two crossbars between the supporting pillars. Flat sheets can be scalded around the perimeter with a corner. In this case, the base is welded to the supporting pillars.

Ways to decorate a slate fence

Usually a slate fence is left completely unfinished. Perhaps because they do not know how to embellish it. The easiest way is to paint or apply patterns using a stencil. It is worth considering that with the help of acrylic and alkyd paints, you can not only transform the fence, but also significantly increase its service life. In stores you can find a special paint for coloring slate. If applied over a primer, the quality of the painting will be much higher.

Flat slate sheets can be given relief. Do this with cement mortar and stencils. The solution should resemble dough in its consistency. The surface of the sheet is leveled with the prepared solution, and then different patterns are applied using stencils.

A unique relief pattern can be applied using decorative plaster. It is applied by spraying onto a pre-plastered surface.

Slate fencing can be made simple and neat, or you can build a whole work of art. Before starting work, you need to evaluate the features of the site, operating conditions, as well as your own requirements for the functionality and appearance of the fence.

Slate coating is used to cover roofs, but the material is also used to create a fence. The owners of private houses often refuse to make a slate fence, because some owners use such a fence that is outwardly unpresentable.

Most owners use residual materials from the roof, which present a number of disadvantages: holes or moss colonies. It is an erroneous judgment that asbestos-cement slate is made with such an appearance. If you approach the construction of the fence with the necessary care, then the final fence will surprise the owners.

Advantages and disadvantages

If you look at the positive and negative aspects of the material used, then there will definitely be more pleasant characteristics. Positive sides of a slate fence:

  • Cheap variety. When considering the prices of other products (stone or wood), the cost will be much lower.
  • Unpretentiousness. Slate does not need special care, because the components of the fence are resistant to temperature changes.
  • Durability. Due to the unpretentiousness of the components, as well as the quality characteristics, the fence will easily stand for many years.
  • Installation. Installation or dismantling of the structure is simple, which does not require much effort.
There are only two drawbacks to this material:
  • Relative fragility. From a strong blow, the slate bursts, but this is easily restored by replacing or overlaying a different or similar design.
  • Grayness of appearance. The material does not differ in bright colors, but for this they use background decoration at their discretion.

Types of slate

There are two main varieties - asbestos concrete, metal. Asbestos cement is a mixture of cement, asbestos, additives (85%, 10%, 5%). The three components are combined and mixed with water. After manufacturing, the mixture is pressed into a slate of different shapes and sizes. In total there are 2 varieties of asbestos-concrete variant in shape: flat, wave.

Wave

Slate with regular profile waves is used in the construction of roofs. From this "residual material" some build a fence for themselves. A variety with profile reinforcement is used for roofs in private enterprises, due to the long size. A variant with a unified profile is used when installing in residential buildings or enterprises. Differs in average parameters.

Flat

This type of material is used more in the construction of a fence of flat slate than to block roofs. Standard dimensions of the flat variety:

  • Unpressed - 3000x1500x12, weight - 104 kg.
  • Pressed - 3000x1500x20, weight - 180 kg.

A flat variety is used not always for a fence, but also for making a partition on extensions or for thickening a wall.

In addition, not only gray colors of the material are presented on the market, but also options that are painted with multi-colored colors. The paint creates an additional protective layer, which adds resistance to temperature and a moisture-proof film to the fence.

Metal

This is often corrugated board, which is made of galvanized steel. Sheet height - 0.4 / 1.0 mm. To more effectively protect the base, anti-corrosion preparations are used for processing. In addition, the base is primed and a polymer is applied on top. These components are used to create a protective layer on the base and protect the components from corrosion (corrosion).

Metal slate sheet consists of 10 layers:
  • film for protection;
  • polymer processing;
  • primer layer;
  • protective layer;
  • main sheet;
  • zinc layer;
  • primer layer;
  • protective varnish treatment.

Metal sheets are used for roofing, fence construction, as well as for short fences. Also used for wall cladding.

Metal slate has the shape of an angular or regular wave. Divided into three varieties:

  • Universal coverage. Designation - "NS". They are used for the construction of a fence, as well as for building a roof or finishing walls. Wave dimensions - 35 mm.
  • Wall. The designation is "C". This variety is more suitable for the construction of fences. Wave sizes - up to 45 mm.
  • Roofing. Designation - "N". Suitable for roof decoration, there are also holes for water drainage on the form. Size - up to 115 mm.
The list of advantages and disadvantages of the coating differs from the asbestos-cement version. Positive characteristics:
  • Shelf life over 30 years.
  • Small size and weight of sheets.
  • Material resistance to temperature changes.
  • Easy to install.
  • Variety of colors.
  • Improved density of the material that does not burst from impacts.
  • The smooth surface prevents dust and moisture.
But, like any material, the metal coating has disadvantages:
  • Bad soundproofing. During rain or hail, the surface will amplify the sounds.
  • If poor-quality slate, then the shelf life is significantly reduced.

How to make a slate fence with your own hands?

Making a slate fence yourself is easy, due to the simplicity of the material used. Before starting installation, the owner must select the required type of desired fence. After that, a possible mounting option is determined.

Tool and material preparation

Slate waves are most placed on horizontal supports. They are made from steel corners, using wooden posts. To fix the runs with slate, metal studs or welding are used.

For flat slate, fixings in the form of a corner and horizontal runs are used. In addition, a metal profile is used for fixing.

Metal structures are attached in the same way as asbestos concrete.

Frame construction

The flat base is fixed in horizontal runs. Fastenings with a frame are used without drilling additional holes. Just a plate is attached to the main sheet by welding.

Sheet mounting

Sometimes carried out without using a frame from the corner. The sheets are simply fixed with metal studs that are connected to the posts.

Another mounting option is eye plates. They attach sheets of slate to each other. But installing plates increases the creation of chips.

During the installation of sheets, problematic situations often arise. So, the presence of additional holes will not strengthen the mount, but, on the contrary, will damage the structure of the sheet.

Finishing and decoration

Some owners refuse to purchase such material due to dullness. But, now on the shelves there are a different number of colored species. Multi-colored sheets, set in any order, which will add brightness to the dullness of life.

In addition, using special paints, you can decorate the fence under the picture. Only flat slate is used as a canvas.

How not to install slate

Even though the installation process is easy, owners often make mistakes. A common mistake of owners is the use of a thin drywall profile. To install a slate fence, only strong and rigid runs are used.

Another popular problem is fixing the material in a fragile part. Before installation, remember the information that the upper part is rigid and the lower part is fragile.

Slate is one of the most affordable building materials for building fences. At the same time, anyone, even a novice home master, can build a slate fence with his own hands. However, it cannot be considered as a cheap material. Compared to wood, slate is more expensive. But unlike brick or corrugated board, a fence made of the material in question will come out cheaper.

Wave Slate Fence

Until relatively recently, slate was offered as a roofing material, but today it is actively used as hedges.

Among the main advantages are the following:

  1. Fire safety. This material is not combustible, and during strong heating it does not emit toxic substances.
  2. Long service time. A fence made of flat slate can last at least 35 years, wavy - more than 25 years.
  3. Slight elasticity, which does not allow breaks when stretched, allows the material to resist strong gusts of wind without breaking its integrity.
  4. Resistant to aggressive chemicals.
  5. Slate does not make loud noises during rain, unlike other sheet materials.
  6. Frost resistance, as well as resistance to sudden temperature changes.
  7. You can build a fence with your own hands - when building this fence, there are no difficulties. At the same time, the structure is rapidly erected.
  8. Ease of processing - sheets are well drilled and cut with conventional tools.
  9. Euro-slate has excellent performance, which is coated with pigmenting phosphate or silicate compounds. In addition to high decorative qualities, this increases resistance to atmospheric phenomena: the material more easily tolerates significant temperature fluctuations, freezing, and almost does not allow moisture to pass through.

Wave material fence in the village

In general, the slate fence comes out quite neat, although, of course, we are not talking about high aesthetic properties.

Often on the forums there is a discussion of various shortcomings of protective structures made of slate.

Among the main ones are:

  1. The main drawback is the composition of the slate. The material contains a hazardous substance - asbestos. But asbestos is dangerous only during the cutting of the sheet or when stored in closed warehouses. If slate sheets are on the street, then they are safe for health.
  2. Low resistance to moisture. It is undesirable to install this fence in areas with a humid climate. The fence will not be able to hold out in its original state for a long time. The surface will quickly darken, become covered with moss, crack.
  3. The fence turns out to be quite heavy due to the large weight of the slate itself. This often creates some inconvenience during installation and operation in the future. During construction, stronger load-bearing elements will be needed. During future use, the fence may tilt due to the significant weight.
  4. Low aesthetic appeal. Wave slate fencing does not look very nice. If you choose a colored material, then the situation can be significantly improved, but it must be painted almost every year. A do-it-yourself flat slate hedge has better decorative qualities, as well as a more attractive look.
  5. Fragility. The fence has a low level of resistance to point impacts. Any mechanical load can contribute to a split or hole, which will entail repair of the structure. Also, after a while, when the fence begins to tilt under its own weight, cracks may appear in the areas of fasteners to the elements of the crate.

The photo below shows a slate fence.

The latter is 12% heavier, but its strength characteristics increase by 22%. This is how you can partially solve the issue of fragility. At the same time, the material has a more accurate geometry and more than 45 cycles of freezing and thawing. But if you want to make a budget fence, then you can choose LP-NP.

Wave slate also has several types. Today, manufacturers have increased the range due to various methods of painting products. This greatly increased the attractiveness of the material, and consumers got rid of the problem of how to paint a slate fence.

Types of wave slate sheets:

  • unified slate (UV);
  • reinforced sheet (VU);
  • wave ordinary sheet (VO).

The wavy look of slate can be seen in the photo below.

Private house fence

It is best to make a fence from wave slate with your own hands from a unified UV sheet. It has a high density, as well as convenient dimensions for work. The weight of the sheet is no more than 25 kg, and the useful size is almost close to the actual one. This reduces consumption and also facilitates the installation process.

Preparatory work

Before you make a slate fence with your own hands, you need to make calculations. Calculate the slate fence is very simple. It is only necessary to measure the perimeter of the fenced area, subtract the openings of the gates and gates. Then a drawing is made where the supports of the future fence are placed: angular and intermediate. Subsequent calculations are made after the selection of slate sheets.

Regarding the strength between the wave and flat sheets of slate, there is no significant difference. This material, one way or another, is fragile. Therefore, it is necessary to choose products taking into account their availability, price and the desired result.

A flat slate sheet is easier to install and allows the installation of individual elements without overlap. Accordingly, with a significant length of the fence, 2-3 sheets can be saved.

Installing fence posts and fixing a log

During the acquisition of the material, you need to pay attention to the geometric dimensions:

  • mismatch of linear dimensions should be no more than ± 4 mm;
  • wave - no more than 5 mm for pressed sheets, up to 9 mm for non-pressed sheets;
  • diagonal deviation should be no more than 4 mm.

To determine the quality of slate, you need to read its marking, as well as measure any sheet. You also need to pay attention to the color of the surface: darkening is the cause of high humidity and improper storage of the material.

Fence installation scheme

As for the height of the slate fence, in this case there are many nuances. The SNiP does not specify clear requirements, it only recommends installing fences with a height of no more than 2 m.

However, if we consider solid fences, then in this case the size is reduced to 75 cm.

Also, local regulations may specify certain restrictions. But still, most often problems with hedges of the “wrong” height appear only if the homeowner himself could not find a peaceful solution with his neighbors.

There is one more nuance: the optimal height of the fence is about 2 m. This is quite enough for the territory to be fenced off from prying eyes. But in standard products this size does not exist. There are two ways out: either use a wave sheet, or find a flat slate made according to TU, which has such a size.

Design and calculation

It is necessary to measure the area to find out how much slate is needed to build a fence.

Fence Installation Drawing

If the calculation is a fractional number, it is rounded up. You also need to remember the fragility of the material, so it must be purchased with a margin of 7%, for the example described, 6-7 sheets.

Also in the estimate of calculations are supports for the fence. It is advisable to use metal profile pipes for slate fences. The fence posts are set at intervals of 2.5 m, but for better strength they are often placed at a distance of 2 m. This will slightly increase the financial costs and labor intensity of the construction of the structure, but it is better to have an extra margin of safety.

Self-tapping screws for fastening slate

Step-by-step instructions for calculating support pipes for a fence using the example of a plot measuring 45x35 meters:

  1. Supports for gates and gates - 4 pieces.
  2. Corner posts - 4 pieces.
  3. Intermediate poles are installed along the long side of the territory, taking into account 45/2 = 23 pcs. (the number must be multiplied by 2).
  4. Back of the territory: 35 / 2 = 18 pcs. (also multiplied by 2).
  5. A total of 90 supports are needed.

Supports are required with a cross section of no more than 10x10 cm. The length is determined taking into account the height of the fence plus 1 m per recess in the ground.

Materials and tools

Required materials:

  1. Metal corner 55x90 mm for fastening transverse logs.
  2. Beam 60x140 mm - the total length is 2 more than the size of the fence.
  3. Fasteners.
  4. Anti-corrosion agent.
  5. Ruberoid, cement.

Do-it-yourself fasteners for installing slate

During marking and preparation for installation, you will need pegs, a garden drill, a level, a rope. When building a fence, you will need:

  • welding;
  • concrete mixer;
  • electric drill;
  • Bulgarian;
  • keys set;
  • saw blade for metal.

When cutting and drilling products, you need to take care of personal protection, since asbestos, even in small quantities, irritates the surface of the mucous membrane.

Installation instructions

First, corner posts for the fence are installed along the perimeter of the territory. A rope is stretched between them, holes are marked along it for intermediate supports. The installation steps are detailed below.

Slate fence installation scheme

To install a fence you need:

  1. Make holes in the ground for supports using a garden drill. It is not worth digging deeper than 1 m of a hole, because then there will be an overrun of concrete. Check the interval between the holes - it should be the same around the entire perimeter of the fence.
  2. Clean the fence posts from dirt, cover with an anti-corrosion compound, bituminous mastic.
  3. Lay the roofing material in the holes, pour it with concrete, insert the supports, ensuring a vertical level with the help of stretch marks. Leave until the cement hardens for approximately 10-12 days.
  4. Weld transverse steel strips to the supports to fix the beams. Treat the prepared carrier crate with an anti-corrosion solution in several layers.
  5. Dig a small trench between the fence posts and lay a brick base. In areas where there is a slope of the earth towards the backyard, it is necessary to organize drainage.
  6. Drill holes in the bars at the ends for fastenings, fix them with bolts to the fastening strips.
  7. Put the slate sheet on the prepared base, mark the attachment points to the rails.
  8. Fix the slate to the crossbars of the fence with special hardware. In this case, rubber washers must be placed under each self-tapping screw.

Drawing of the correct fastening of the corrugated slate

During the construction of a solid slate fence, it is desirable to organize ventilation of the backyard area. Why leave a gap of 5 cm between the canvas and the ground level (suspended installation) or small gaps between the supports and the canvas.
