Once, an old Singer sewing machine “sailed” into my grasping hands, in almost working condition.
Original ideas for using an old sewing machine in interior decor
The efficiency of the sewing machine was restored by 95% by me, in about three days of persistent picking of the mechanical part, after which it began to sew perfectly. The only thing that did not suit me was its appearance: the stand dried up and staggered on all its spiked joints, the paint on the case was chipped and worn off in many places, the chrome parts were scratched.
This is what the Singer sewing machine looked like before my creative intervention (mechanics removed). There is a certain angular-monogram ornament of Art Nouveau style all over the body. In general, the ornament is built in the "Ra-symbolism": the sun, the sphinx, lotuses, wings - a stylization of the Egyptian style.
I thought just a little, about a month or two, and decided to give my Singer a look worthy of his status.
Preparation for painting was complex and lengthy. I immediately gave the stand to the carpenters I knew, who immediately smashed it, sanded it with high quality and reassembled it. It turned out that the stand was made of mahogany, nothing else. I planned to simply paint the stand in a darker color, tint it with stain, however, when I covered the tree with one layer of varnish, I realized that the color was already perfect without tinting.
The machine itself had to be scraped down to bare metal for a long time. All the old paint along with the primer had to be removed. Several types of sandpaper, knives and an awl for the most microscopic details and holes were used.
When the metal was completely free of paint, I wiped it down with acetone and applied two coats of automotive acrylic primer from a spray can. Each layer of soil was lightly cleaned with fine sandpaper very carefully. In the next photo, the body of the machine and all its other parts are already covered with soil. In order not to splatter the chrome and other parts that do not require painting, I sealed them partly with masking tape, partly with electrical tape.
It is best to paint on metal, even on a primer, with oil paints, and not on turpentine, but on a tee: oil, turpentine, varnish. Stylistically, the traditional Zhostovo painting on trays was most suitable for the surface and character of the product, where lush buds of a flower bouquet seem to emerge from a dark background.
The first painting run was unsuccessful. In the next photo, the original underpainting, which was washed off the next day, because this is not what I wanted.

And almost the same flower ornament on the stand, but with some differences.
Gilding has already been added to the painting on the stand. Zhostovo, although he uses gold in painting, but not in the quantities that I used. By the way, my gold is gold powder mixed with acrylic lacquer. Let's add gold embellishments to the ornament on the case.

After complete drying, the painting of the machine was covered with three layers of automotive acrylic varnish of the same series as the primer. Each layer of varnish, except for the last, was carefully cleaned with zero sandpaper (“null”) in the presence of water (wet sandpaper).
The stand is covered with PF varnish in a standard way for wood.
The photos show a brand new Singer assembled. It looks like it came off the assembly line this morning.
Well, actually, everything. My Singer sewing machine is painted in imitation Zhostovo style. The program is 100% complete. The result, to be honest, exceeded my expectations.
What is the future of the sewing machine?
I do not know yet, but most likely I will sell.

I remember that as a child, my grandmother had a special table in the house - a Singer sewing machine. For the first time I learned to sew on just such a machine. It was later that electrical units appeared - more compact and modern, and, alas, no one needed such tables.
However, do not rush to throw such a rarity in the trash. A little time and imagination - and the old table from under the sewing machine can be transformed into quite unusual interior items. Here are some interesting ideas for inspiration.
1. The simplest thing that can come from the cast iron base of an old sewing machine is a great dining table. The heavy ornate bed will withstand even a fairly wide table top. How great it is to gather the whole family at one table and remember what happened before ...
2. A modern table for a computer or laptop is also quite a worthy metamorphosis for such a table. The so-called eclecticism. If you use a glass tabletop, then such a table will fit even into a high-tech interior.
3. Just a few touches - and it turned out to be quite a solid desk for creative people.
4. Perhaps the most elegant idea is a dressing table. A mirror can be placed on the hinged lid, and in drawers to store cosmetics and all sorts of little things.
5. Washbasin from an old sewing machine in the bathroom or in the country? Incredible idea! But very original.
6. Replacing the countertop instantly changes the shape of the old relic. This coffee table in the living room is simply unrecognisable!
7. Look how good these openwork legs from a Singer typewriter look in vintage or shabby chic interiors. I would love to turn my grandmother's old table into such a console for a vase of flowers. You just need to replace the countertop and repaint the cast-iron legs.
This “love story” started a long time ago, a couple of years ago. Once I had a job, thanks to which I visited almost all the restaurants in the center of Kyiv. In one very cozy establishment, I noticed that all the tables were made from old Singer sewing machines. I really remember this idea. And she lay in my head until the next meeting with a similar table, which took place in the city of Drogobich (Lviv region). Walking around the city, I went to a handicraft store. It was very nice there. A lot of different very stylish and unusual things, and again ... a table from a sewing machine ... Then this idea was already firmly planted in my head, and besides, I infected my husband Kostya with it.
The search began for the machine, which, fortunately, did not last long. My great-aunt offered us to pick up her old sewing machine, which has been lying in her country house for a long time. A lot of time passed before we transported this “treasure” from Vinnitsa to Kyiv, then another six months, until we were ready to implement this idea. And we made the table itself in just 5 days and just fell in love with it!
How did we do it?
Step 1
They dismantled the table, threw out a completely outdated countertop and other parts from the typewriter. True, they left a box (we put it in it). All the details were washed in the shower, cleaned from a hundred years of plaque with a metal brush.
Step 2
Leg painting. Kostya took all the metal parts to the garage and painted them by hanging them on a wire.
Painted with wear-resistant paint 4 in 1. It turned out a very beautiful matte finish.
Step 3
We bought a pine furniture board. Dimensions: 100 x 60 x 1.8 cm.
For painting, we chose the “Pinotex Interior” transparent paint and tinted it in a purple-burgundy color. This color is just right for the color palette that we have defined for the room. In addition, it is dark enough not to distract or irritate the eyes while working.
We decided to cover the tree with a roller, because it applies paint more evenly than a brush and does not leave streaks and furrows.
The tabletop has been painted three times. Between layers kept for 2-3 hours, although this paint dries almost instantly. The peculiarity of "Pinotex Interior" is that it does not leave a greasy layer, but is completely absorbed into the wood, since it is water-based. That is, the effect is obtained, as from a stain, but this paint, in addition to tinting, also protects the wood.
Here is such a velvety effect after a three-layer coating. But we decided to also cover the table top with acrylic varnish for reliability, since this sewing machine table will be a full-fledged computer desk, at which we will sometimes drink tea or coffee :) We were not sure that Pinotex would react favorably to spilled coffee. And the polish will hold up.
Step 4
Lacquering. Why did we choose acrylic lacquer? Firstly, because there is a child in the house, and even if you cover the countertop with oil varnish in the garage, you will have to wait a while until the unpleasant toxic smell disappears. Acrylic varnish is absolutely non-toxic. Secondly, it dries quickly and on the same day you can fix the table top. Thirdly, this varnish can be applied with a very thin, imperceptible layer, which was to our advantage, because we still wanted to preserve the velvety.
During painting, the varnish has a white tint, but then this effect disappears and the layer becomes completely transparent.
Step 5
Table marking for fixtures. We did it with masking tape so as not to stain the paint layer with a pencil (or something worse :)). Everything was measured, the location of the legs was determined.

We put marks in the holes on the legs through which the old tabletop was attached. They will be clearly visible on the tape. According to the marks, we drill holes for furniture nuts.
After the holes are ready, you need to hammer furniture nuts into them.
You can also play with nuts: scatter them throughout the apartment, and then collect them together with the whole family. This lesson is suitable for taking a little break from the hard work on creating a table from a sewing machine :)
We fix the table top on the legs and the table is ready! This is what Kostino's workplace looks like now. True, now we have to fight for the opportunity to sit at the computer desk, because we only have one graphics tablet, and I really want to draw on it :)))
Ficus also clung to this love story, and, in my opinion, very successfully.
Now the modest Soviet chair is waiting for alterations. He will become a concise addition to the male workplace. But that is another story…
