Bench from broken chairs

On the site http://www.anoregoncottage.com I found a great way to save old broken chairs. From them you can make a completely incomparable country bench.

I think many people have such old chairs that are falling apart in the literal sense of the word. Of course, you can throw them away, or you can try to make something very interesting and convenient.

Step one: Find two identical chairs

  • Most suitable chairs that have a slight bend in the back. It is these backs that we need

Step Two: Creating the Seat

  • Assemble the frame as long as you see your bench and secure each end with two screws (as shown in the picture above). Use solid wood and long self-tapping screws, because our goal is to create a strong and durable structure.

Step Three: Creating the Bottom Shelf

  • Even after we have made the seat as secure as possible, the bench may still be too wobbly and unreliable. In order to solve this problem, we create an additional element of strength - the lower shelf

Step four: Putty and paint

  • We fill all the holes in the wood with a special putty, let it dry well, and then thoroughly sand all surfaces, paint with any suitable paint.

Step Five: Making the plywood seat

  • Cut off a piece of thick plywood of the required size
  • We cover the plywood with batting or foam rubber (its size should be slightly larger than that of the plywood sheet) and cover the seat with upholstery fabric. At this stage, a furniture stapler gun will be indispensable

Now we just have to decide whether to leave everything as it is or add a couple of pillows, because our bench is already ready!

Suppose you absolutely need a large amount of money, and getting a loan from a bank is problematic due to the inability to provide the necessary documents. And what, a common thing, happens when there is no official place of work or the basic salary is paid "in an envelope." In this case, there is only one way out - to contact a company that can, and the entire package of documents will be executed not only promptly and competently, but also in the form that will guarantee the bank's consent to issue you a long-awaited loan.

Do not rush to throw away old kitchen furniture. Your diligence and imagination will help the chairs from the set get a new life, for example, in the form of a bench. It is not only convenient, but also interesting, because you can use it not just as a bench in the yard. A bench of chairs can become an independent and original piece of furniture in the interior of a living space.

materials

To make a bench from old chairs with your own hands, you will need:

  • four identical chairs;
  • sandpaper;
  • means for removing paint and varnish;
  • putty knife;
  • band-saw;
  • drill and drills;
  • wooden dowels;
  • wood glue;
  • paint for wood;
  • tassel;
  • varnish for wood;
  • board;
  • jigsaw;
  • meter.

Step 1. Take two chairs out of four. Choose those that are not so attractive in appearance. Carefully remove the horizontal posts at the front of the seats.

Step 2. The remaining two chairs will need to cut off the front legs. Before that, using a meter and a marker, draw cut lines. They must pass below the A-pillars on the seats. Cut off the unnecessary part of the legs with a circular saw.

Step 3. Apply a varnish and paint remover to the surface of the prepared parts of the bench. Leave it on the surface of the chairs for the time specified by the manufacturer. After it expires, remove the old coating. For convenience, you can remove rough layers with a spatula. Sand the surface of the chairs with fine sandpaper.

Step 4. On the prepared uprights on the front side and on the uprights of the chairs on the front side, mark with a marker in the places where you will drill holes for the dowels. Before using a drill, be sure to check the correctness of the marks. Drill holes.

Step 5. Insert the dowels into the holes on the end side of the uprights. Lubricate them with wood glue first.

Step 6. After the glue has dried, assemble the bench base. During assembly, in addition to wood glue, fasten the components with self-tapping screws. Sand all surfaces again.

Step 7. The seat of the bench will be a board fitted to the shape of the chairs. To do this, by trying on, apply the markings of the appropriate form on the surface of the board and cut off everything superfluous with a jigsaw.

Step 8. If your bench seat, as in this case, consists of several boards, glue them already fitted together with wood glue. Clamp the structure with clamps and wait for the glue to dry completely.

Step 9. Glue the seat to the bench base. Send weights to the board and secure it with clamps.

Step 10. After the glue has completely dried, cover the surface of the seat with masking tape. Paint all other parts of the bench with wood paint.

Step 11. Remove the masking tape and cover the seat board with stain.

Step 12. Paint the entire surface of the bench with wood varnish.

After the coating dries, put pillows on the bench and enjoy your rest.

Do you have a couple of unnecessary chairs that are idle? Today we will show you how to make a cool French-style bench out of them, which is ideal for decorating the interior.

On our balcony we found old, wooden chairs, which are about 50-60 years old. They were with a soft seat and made of thin wood. By the time we got down to business, they were already falling apart.

We named the bench French because we saw a similar bench from Ballard Designs. We also want to emphasize that this is not one of those benches that are made according to the principle of lining up chairs in a row, where plywood is later laid on them. After all, it looks a little strange, we will make a bench in a classic style.

If you still make such a bench, you will surely have your own thoughts and ideas on how to do it better. We will be glad to accept your advice and work. Send them to us by mail, we will be happy to share them on our website.

After looking at our chairs, we found that they were fake, although they looked like they were quite expensive. After that, they safely carried them to the farthest corner of the workshop, to await their fate. At that moment, we simply could not get rid of them. One fine day in May, one of our craftsmen suddenly began to make our bench without us. This is not like him, because usually we have to persuade him for a long time, to do something, of course, except for custom-made furniture, this is his direct responsibility. So, let's begin!

Step one: Find chairs.

We need to find two chairs that look good from the outside. If your chairs have a slight back angle, that will be fine. Such a back will create comfort and not very angular look. It is desirable that the seat of the chair be screwed with nuts and bolts to the main body. This will make it easier for us to attach the bench base to our chairs.

- Remove the front legs and seat. Our fake chairs were held together with glue, we easily ripped off the two front legs and removed the seat. Thus, we are left with two backs of the chair.

If the front legs on your chairs can be unscrewed, it is better to take advantage of this opportunity. If the legs are broken off, parts of the tree may remain sticking out.

Step two: Making an undivided seat.

- Make a rectangular frame. The length of the bench can be made any. It depends on how many people you plan to fit on it. We took materials for our frame in an old countertop from ikea. After the frame is ready, it must be fixed with screws, as shown in the figure above. Use strong screws to make the frame immovable.

- Fixing the frame. We drilled holes where the chair seats would fit if they weren't fake, and attached our frame. On each side, we made three holes, and screwed in three screws in order to evenly distribute the weight. A little lower, we drilled a couple more holes, and screwed in the future shelf for various things. Our goal is to make the bench safe to sit on, so don't skimp on the bolts, we ended up with 7 screws on each side.

Step three. Create the bottom shelf.

“Even after we attached the main frame to our bench, the structure was still quite wobbly. To avoid falling and breaking the bench, we decided to fasten the two sides with another wooden rectangle. We will use it as a shelf. Carefully measure the distance between the legs, and do not forget about the main principle "Measure seven times - cut one." Do not repeat our mistakes, measure correctly.

- We nail the partitions. We didn't want our bench to look boxy or bulky. Instead of a sheet of plywood, which was originally supposed to be located on the bottom frame, we nailed 5 cross rails. Used for this ordinary, small carnations.

Step four. We skin and paint.

We remove all irregularities with sandpaper. After that, if there are empty gaps between the frames and the frame, we fill them with building foam or plaster. After that, once again go through the sandpaper. If you leave the gaps unfilled, over time moisture will accumulate there and gradually destroy our bench from the inside. If you don’t have any plaster or foam on hand, just cover all these holes with paint.

Bench painting. We used spray paint, soft cream color. Apply three even coats and let dry.

The cost of a spray can of paint in Tashkent starts from 10 thousand soums. No more expense for a whole bench.

Step five. We make a seat.

To make a seat , we need a piece of plywood, chipboard, MDF or fiberboard. From this we will build the top of the bench.

- Upholstery seat. For soft filling, we used a synthetic winterizer. If you don't have one handy, you can pull out the cotton from old mattresses. There's plenty of it, it's quite suitable. Well, or the fastest and cheapest way is to buy a small piece of foam. It is sold in stores with furniture fittings or households. goods. It is necessary to lay out the filler on plywood so that there is about 1 centimeter of void around the perimeter. The material for covering the bench is also of your choice. We used a piece of an unnecessary sheet. Having covered our soft filler with a cloth, we wrapped the edges under the bottom of the bench, and attached it there with a stapler.

- Fasten the seat to the body. For mounting, we used an L-shaped bracket. Although normal bolts would hold up just fine, we decided to be on the safe side and use them.

Our bench is ready! All that remains for us is to decide whether the pillow will be located there or not. In an unusual environment for ourselves, with needles in our hands, we decided to try. Taking the remnants of the sheet that we had left from covering the bench and synthetic winterizer, we began to sew and fill our pillow. It turned out quite well, for people who have been making custom-made furniture for many years. Making such a bench will take you half a day, and maybe the whole day. If you have a desire to suddenly do something with your own hands, this bench is a great option to start with. In the yard of your own house or in the country, this piece of furniture will be not only useful, but also beautiful. And decorating it with decorative pillows, the bench will be an excellent tool for decorating a room or area.

I hope that your bench turned out to be as strong as ours. It does not stagger or even sway under a load of about 200 kg. And if something went wrong, or simply there is not enough time, patience or strength, but you want to get such a bench. You can order it in the furniture to order section. And we will not tell anyone that you did not do it.

We believe that this is a great way to save old chairs and give them a second life. Send us your work by mail. We will be glad to show the world what you have done.

How to make a bench from old chairs? We tell.

In this tutorial, we are using four old chairs. We need two of them almost entirely, from the remaining two it is convenient to saw off the parts missing to get the bench. In general, two chairs are enough, but then you will need additional boards.

If the chairs are very old and have already started to fall apart a little, then choose the two most durable of the four. From the other two, we need the front crossbars. The photo shows which ones. They can either be sawn off or untwisted if the design is prefabricated.

From the two main chairs you need to saw off the front legs. For convenience, you can outline the line along which you will cut.

Before we start assembling, we need to get rid of the old paint. To do this, you need a paint thinner. Buy any at a hardware store and follow the instructions on the package. For convenience, lay a piece of unnecessary tarp, old newspapers or film as a work surface. Be sure to wear rubber gloves before applying the solvent. Don't forget to apply thinner to the boards we prepared to connect the chairs to the bench.

Soak the solvent for the time set according to the instructions. To remove old paint, use a spatula, metal is better.

Let's do the assembly. Use furniture dowels to attach boards to chairs. Carefully mark the location of the dowels with a marker and a ruler so that all holes are on the same level. Wrap the drill with masking tape to track the desired hole depth.

For a more secure fastening of the dowels in the holes, use wood glue.

In order to make the structure more durable, add a wooden beam to the middle of the bench. Measure the distance between the chairs, cut the beam to the desired length and secure it with screws. After assembly, it is necessary to do surface grinding. Use sandpaper or a grinder.

Now you need to make a seat for the bench. You can either buy timber in the store or use the remnants of old ones left in the garage from past work. Lay the bars on edge on the bench to understand how much you need.

We glue the beams together with wood glue. Clamp with clamps and leave for a day.

Now we need to trim the edges of the seat surface to the shape of the chairs. In our case, they are rounded. We outline a pencil line and use a jigsaw to saw off an unnecessary part.

Place the seat on the chairs and secure them with screws. You can only use wood glue, then after gluing put some weight on the seat. But screws will be more reliable.

Sand the seat surface after finishing work. Now it remains only to paint the bench. For the construction of the chairs, use the paint, having previously covered the seat with a film and sealed the sides with masking tape. Paint the seat itself. If you have different beams, as in our instructions and it looks aesthetically pleasing, then you can use a clear varnish. Leave the bench for a few days until completely dry.
