Despite the fact that every year the building products market offers us more and more options for interior decoration, timeless classics in the form of natural materials, such as wood, are still popular among aesthetes. The fact is that in addition to its undeniable visual merits, wall decoration with wood, especially noble species, has a full range of practical advantages - it is safe and environmentally friendly, has great potential for implementing the most daring projects, and has excellent sound and heat insulation properties. Thanks to these qualities, the tree helps to create the most comfortable atmosphere in the room, and so that our reader can correctly choose the most optimal type of material for the realization of his ideas, we have prepared today's article.

Each type of wood has its own set of unique qualities, and therefore, in order to achieve complete harmony between the material and space, it is necessary to carefully analyze the purpose of the room and the possible nuances in the operation of such a finish in it. Consider the most popular options in our latitudes.

Larch

This type of wood has long been in demand among domestic buyers. Like other conifers, larch has a healing effect, is extremely durable, which can be of paramount importance for a wide range of premises, and is also simple and pleasant to work with - it is well processed and easy to paint. Sufficiently strict and conservative appearance makes larch a versatile material.

Pine

Another representative of conifers, not least loved by the Russians for its reasonable price. Pine copes well with moisture, and therefore can be used as a finishing material for a bathroom or kitchen, but it is worth remembering that the tree should still be pre-impregnated with a moisture-repellent mixture. Decorating the walls with this tree with our own hands was within the power of our distant ancestors, and therefore modern man is quite capable of coping with such a task.

Oak

If you decide to sheathe the walls with wood primarily because of the durability of the material, then you can safely choose in favor of a handsome oak, with proper care, repairs made with it will be able to delight your unborn grandchildren. Oak parquet is a popular solution, but this material is also perfect for other surfaces.

Spruce

If you are planning to finish the inside of the house, which is characterized by insufficient warmth in the cold season, then spruce will be able to compensate for all the shortcomings in heat capacity. This wooden wall covering will make you forget about those times when you had to turn on the heater or wrap yourself in many layers of clothing so as not to freeze in the room.

Linden

The advantage of linden is that it is extremely malleable in work and, with its help, you can achieve interesting solutions in the process of decorating a space. If you are a fan of curved and streamlined shapes, pay close attention to the linden.

Of course, there is still a whole mass of tree species worthy of attention, such as walnut or mahogany, but in today's material we would like to dwell on the above-mentioned, relatively affordable options.

Wood wall finishes

The choice of wood species is only the first step towards decorating the walls with wood in the apartment, after that we need to decide on the type of wood panels for decoration, there is also a wide choice here.

Slatted panels

Such panels are made of thin boards, the thickness of which is from 8 to 12 millimeters, and the length and width vary from 90 to 370 centimeters and 13.5 to 30 centimeters, respectively. They can be mounted to the wall vertically or horizontally using mounting brackets. Such panels often include intermediate decorative strips that have a positive effect on the overall aesthetics of the structure.

This type of panel is the most economical and easy to install, and therefore is well suited for budget do-it-yourself repairs.

Sheet panels

Large format panels covering the entire wall. Standard dimensions of such a sheet:

length - 2.44 m;
width - 1.22 m;
thickness - 3-6 cm.

This type of panels is attached to the wall with glue, they can also be planted on a crate. Sheet panels have a unique design potential, because thanks to their large dimensions, you can apply a solid image on them, which will make the walls of your apartment unique.

Tiled panels

This type of panels can be rectangular or square and can be assembled into a special composition with its own story, told through the geometry of shapes and texture of the material. Usually the plates have dimensions of either 300x300 mm or 980x980 mm, but if you have a request for a certain non-standard size, then you can find it.

Such panels are mounted using fasteners on the crate. They can be made from a variety of woods or materials such as MDF, fiberboard or chipboard.

Tree Selection Rules

Usually, wood trim implies high durability, and therefore you need to carefully approach the choice of material so that it does not become unusable ahead of time. Pay attention to the price of wood, if it is significantly lower than the market price, then you may expect unpleasant surprises after a short period of operation.

It is worth remembering that various wooden materials have a wide range of varieties:

  • Extra - ideal material, devoid of flaws;
  • A - small cracks may be present, hairiness and roughness are not excluded;
  • B - large cracks, a large number of knots are not excluded;
  • C - boards may have pronounced defects.

Grade C will cost significantly less than others, but if you do not have professional woodworking skills, then this material is best avoided.

Advantages and disadvantages

When choosing a material for finishing, you need to carefully weigh all its pros and cons. The strengths of wood include:

  • Strength;
  • Aesthetic component;
  • Aroma;
  • Safety and environmental friendliness;
  • Durability.

The disadvantages are the following:

  • The price bites;
  • Difficulty in operation and maintenance.

Natural materials for interior decoration are considered the safest; this way of decorating a home has become quite popular.

Wood of various species equally well allows you to implement both original and traditional solutions, thanks to a variety of colors and textures. Consider various options and photos of wall decoration with wood - decorative panels and other materials.

It has high thermal qualities due to its friability. A room in which the finish is made with spruce will always keep the temperature well.

Various laying methods give scope for design imagination for using lining in interiors of modern styles. It goes well with painted walls, ordinary wallpaper, tiles.

With a harmonious combination of color and proportions, you can create a very special interior. It is used both for walls, ceilings, and for decorating furniture.

Block house

A popular way to finish walls under a tree is to use blocks of larch, pine.

  • choose domestic wood, it is more predictable in "behavior", moreover, it is often more profitable in terms of cost.

Specialization: facade finishing, interior finishing, construction of dachas, garages. The experience of an amateur gardener and horticulturist. He also has experience repairing cars and motorcycles. Hobbies: playing the guitar and much more, for which there is not enough time :)

The information is addressed to admirers of natural finishing materials. We will consider the decoration of the apartment with wood, and we will study modern technologies. I will also talk about the nuances of interior design.

Choosing materials

First of all, we will consider what wood finishing materials exist, since the style of the entire room, as a rule, depends on their choice. So, at present, the following types of coatings are used for interior decoration:

Clapboard and block house

These wooden materials are finishing tongue-and-groove boards. The only difference between lining and block house is the front side profile. At the lining it is flat, and at the block house it is cylindrical.

As a result of this feature, when decorating walls, a block house is usually placed horizontally, which makes it possible to imitate a rounded log. The lining is most often fixed in a vertical position.

Among the main advantages of these materials are the following points:

  • high strength;
  • the most affordable cost, however, this applies only to materials from inexpensive wood species - spruce, pine, linden;

  • good heat and sound insulation properties, which makes housing more comfortable;
  • installation does not require surface preparation;
  • resistance to temperature extremes and moisture.

The cost of lining and block house is affected not only by the type of wood, but also by the type of material.

Thanks to these qualities, finishing boards can sheathe not only the walls inside the housing, but also the balcony. In private houses, these materials are used even for facade cladding.

If you live in a private wooden (or wood-panelled) house with a balcony, you can decorate the balcony with carved balusters. This will make the facade even more original and attractive.

Below are the current prices for these materials:

Wall panels

If you want to decorate the interior in an original and spectacular way, no matter what style, then you should pay attention to wall panels. With their help, as a rule, they decorate separate sections of the walls or highlight one of the walls of the room, as, for example, in the photo below.

It must be said that wall panels differ both in design and material. Elite products are made from precious woods. Their cost starts from 5000-6000 rubles per square meter.

Often, in the manufacture of panels, thermowood (dark wood) is used, which is characterized by increased resistance to moisture and many other negative influences that destroy wood.

I must say that due to these unique properties, heat-treated dark-colored wood is often used to finish the steam room. But this is a topic for another article, and as for the apartment, this material is great for finishing.

The cheapest products are made from MDF or even fiberboard. Their cost starts from 300-400 rubles per square meter.

wooden wallpaper

Wooden wallpaper is a thin veneer of precious wood, glued to the base - thick paper. Thus, they are rolled materials, just like regular wallpapers.

It should be noted that this material is often the best solution for decorative finishing, as it allows you to finish surfaces of complex shapes. In addition, there is a wide selection of wooden wallpaper designs on sale. For example, you can purchase both canvases imitating aged wood for rustic interior styles, and luxurious wenge veneer wallpapers that are suitable for classic interiors.

True, along with the advantages, wooden ones also have some disadvantages:

  • require surface preparation, like ordinary wallpaper;
  • high cost - the price of the cheapest canvases starts on average from 1,500 rubles per linear meter. Elite wallpapers can cost more than $100 per square meter;

  • temperature changes and high humidity can lead to the formation of gaps at the joints of the wallpaper.

Due to the high cost, this material is usually used to decorate individual sections of the walls.

Gusvarblock

Very original and unusual looks in the apartments, wood trim, made gusvarblok. Therefore, this material can be recommended to those who seek to create a truly unique interior design.

Gusvarblok, in fact, is the same lining, however, its front side has a certain profile. I must say that there are many different types of profiles, and the most expensive models of this material are even decorated with carvings.

During the installation of the gusvarblock, various wooden profiles can be combined, thereby creating a unique finish design. For example, combinations of carved boards with simpler profiles look beautiful.

As for the operational qualities, they are similar to lining and block house, i.e. are strong and durable material, which, in principle, can be used in any room, including rooms with high humidity, for example, in the kitchen.

I must say that the cost of the gusvarblok is also quite high. The price of the simplest profiles starts from 650 rubles. per square meter. Carved items can cost several thousand rubles.

In addition, the cost depends on the type of wood. For example, Robinia (acacia) is several times more expensive than a similar pine product.

Here, in fact, are all the most common materials for interior woodwork that I wanted to tell you about.

Modern tinted coatings allow you to get the color and texture of any wood, be it wenge or mahogany. Therefore, to create a “rich” interior, it is not at all necessary to use expensive finishing materials.

The nuances of decorating an apartment with a tree

In order for the wooden interior decoration to be successful, you need not only to purchase the materials you like, but also to use them correctly. Next, I will share with you some ideas and nuances of using wood in an apartment.

Kitchen

The use of wood in the kitchen is, above all, a practical solution, since grease and soot are not as terrible for it as, for example, for wallpaper. The only thing is that the surface should be flat and smooth so that it is easier to clean. Therefore, it is better to refuse all kinds of carved panels in favor of ordinary lining.

Of course, the material must be treated with a protective compound. Most often, acrylic varnish is used for these purposes. If you want to preserve the natural look of wood, you can use various oils for processing, for example, linseed oil is great for this purpose.

Fans of the Provence style can be recommended to paint the lining in white or light blue with water-dispersion matte paint, which will preserve the texture of the wood. To avoid the effect of the "hospital ward", you can use white with some shade.

Another common kitchen design option is country style. In this case, you can keep the natural color of wood on the walls. The only thing is that it is desirable to age the tree.

I must say that do-it-yourself antique wood finishing is quite simple:

  1. First of all, you need to perform brushing (aging). To do this, you need to clean the wood along the fibers with a metal brush, as a result of which loose tissues will be erased, i.e. depressions will appear on the surface, and dense ones will remain;
  2. then the surface must be lightly sanded with a sandpaper with a fine abrasive;
  3. after that, the surface should be treated with impregnation;
  4. then the wood needs to be treated with a water glaze, for example RY M023. Glaze can be tinted with an aqueous pigment paste such as EY M470.

  1. after applying the glaze, it must be removed from the surface with a soft cloth, as a result of which only the recesses will be painted;

  1. at the end of the work, a water-based oil should be applied to the surface.

Another interesting design option for the kitchen is in the Russian rustic style. In this case, it is best to sheathe the walls with a block house. Moreover, it is also desirable to process them semi-antique in order to achieve maximum authenticity.

It should be noted that when decorating a kitchen in a rustic style, whether it is Provence, country or Russian style, it is advisable to decorate the ceiling with decorative beams. On the floor, you can use parquet, floorboard or even tiles.

Living room

Decorative decoration of the living room can be made with any of the materials described above. Therefore, the choice depends primarily on the interior design:

  • if you want to design a living room in a rustic style, the recommendations for finishing remain the same as for a rustic kitchen;

  • You can decorate a classic interior with wooden panels. As a rule, they are placed at the bottom of the walls. At the same time, the upper part of the walls can be pasted over with fabric wallpaper or trimmed with decorative plaster.

In addition, attention should be paid to decorative trim elements, such as skirting boards and fillets. As a rule, they are made the same in color and texture as the panels on the walls. You can also decorate the doorway with a carved wood pattern.

In this case, parquet or laminate should be used on the floor. Moreover, it is desirable to make the floor a tone lighter than the wall decoration;

  • when decorating living rooms in modern styles, only one of the walls is trimmed with wood. For these purposes, you can use gusvarblok, wall panels or wooden wallpaper.

If the hall is large and decorated in a classical style, the installed column in the center or several carved columns adjacent to the wall will help diversify the interior.

Bedroom

The tree in the bedroom always looks very impressive. Moreover, here it can be made the main element of the decor, and the rest of the interior can be built around it.

An excellent solution is to finish the wall with wooden material at the head of the bed. In this case, the material can be any, ranging from gusvarblok, and ending with wooden wallpaper.

Hallway and corridor

The classic option for using wood in the corridor and hallway is to finish the bottom of the walls with clapboard or wood paneling. This solution not only decorates the walls, but also makes the decoration more practical. True, PVC is most often used for these purposes, however, if desired, natural materials can also be used.

Of course, you can completely finish the walls with wood, for example, as in the photo below. For these purposes, it is better to use wooden wallpaper or panels.

Here, perhaps, are all the main nuances of decorating an apartment with wood, which I wanted to tell you about. Finally, I note that all the above design recommendations are not strict instructions that must not be violated. Therefore, you can implement any of your ideas, however, if you are not sure about the result, then it is better to follow the generally accepted rules.

Conclusion

From the article, you learned that wood is an excellent alternative to artificial finishing materials. It allows you to make housing more environmentally friendly, as well as stylish and visually appealing. I recommend that you additionally watch the video in this article on the use of wood in the interior.
