How to build an octagonal gazebo - tips, drawings

A yard without a summer gazebo is like a fish without a pond! Like a cake without raisins! The gazebo is the place where the whole family gathers, where you can relax, chat!

With the purchase of a summer cottage - the idea of building a gazebo usually arises as the very first! Planted young trees cannot yet give shade, the vine planted near the house also needs time to grow and create a shady shelter from the scorching sun.

What gazebo is better to make or buy? Often, when developing new summer cottages, the owners make large material investments, therefore, as an option, it is better to do the construction yourself! Of course, provided that you know how to hold construction tools in your hands! So - consider one of the options for a gazebo.

We offer you a detailed basic design of an octagonal gazebo. Based on these drawings, you can create your own version of the design, which is more suitable for the style of your garden and home.

During the construction process, carefully measure all the components of the gazebo. Carefully mark out the site for the gazebo.

Pay your attention!)))

All dimensions in drawings are in inches (1inch=2.54cm). Any small error you make in the early stages tends to accumulate and turn into a real problem in the final stages.

To protect the finished wooden structure of the gazebo, use special impregnations that will protect the wood from decay and help preserve the beautiful shade of the wood. If you plan to paint your pergola, be sure to coat it with an oil-based exterior wood primer first.

Based on this basic drawing, you can change the design of the gazebo according to your taste.

Good luck building!

In their configuration and design, gazebos can be no less diverse than at home. An 8-sided gazebo is structurally considered one of the most difficult options, but it makes it possible to accommodate a lot of people with a relatively compact area of the building.

In this article we will tell you what these difficulties are, consider the order of work and possible design options. For those who prefer to do everything on their own, the video in this article will help: "How to build an 8-sided gazebo yourself."

If we talk about the materials from which an octagonal gazebo can be built with your own hands, then believe that the number of corners does not play any role here. As in any other case, it can be brick with blocks, and wood (see), and shaped or forged metal, glazed stained-glass windows made of metal-plastic.

So:

  • The degree of capitalization of the structure also varies. This may well be a stone structure on a strip foundation or, for example, a collapsible version from the manufacturer, installed on a pre-arranged podium.

  • In the latter case, installation work is usually carried out by specialists from the company from which the kit was purchased. Well, if you are thinking about how to build an 8-sided gazebo on your own, you will have to delve into all the intricacies of the process.

First, decide on the dimensions of the building, for which you need a drawing. If you can, make it yourself or download a ready-made version. But when marking up, you just need to follow the specified dimensions exactly.

We draw a regular octagon

Drawing a regular octagon is not as easy as it seems at first glance. In order for the geometry of the structure to be correct, you need to correctly markup, and for this you have to remember the geometry. We hope that this guide will help you to cope with the task.

  • We think it would be useful to recall that at the time of the start of the marking, the site for construction should be prepared. It is necessary not only to remove vegetation, but also to remove the fertile layer of soil - otherwise it will be inconvenient to mark up.
  • The drawing, which we cited as an example, shows the standard dimensions, according to which 8-sided arbors are most often built. You can also take these dimensions as a basis - we will also use them in our story. So, let's focus on the drawing.

  • The distance between two opposite sides is 4m and the distance between the corners is 1.65m. As usual, when drawing a polyhedron, one cannot do without a circle, but first we draw a rectangle with the indicated dimensions (4.0 * 1.65m). Thus, we will already get the four corners of our octahedron.
  • Now you need to determine the center of the rectangle, for which each side of the figure is divided in half by the axis. The center of the intersection of the axes will be the center of the circle that we need to draw. The radius of the circle will be equal to the distance from the center to the corner of the rectangle.

  • Further it is simpler: the distance from the center of the circle to the center of the short side of the rectangle is set aside on the perpendicular axis on one side and the other. Draw two lines through these points, parallel to the long side of the first rectangle. In those places where they intersect with the circle, there will be four more corners of the octahedron, and by connecting all the corners, we get the outline of the future building.

A few words about how to draw. The compass will have to be used improvised - you can make it from two stakes and a piece of twine. When the first rectangle is already drawn and its center is determined, hammer a peg into it.

Tie a cord to it and measure the required length equal to the radius of the circle. You also tie the second end of the rope to a peg and draw it like a compass rod - that's the whole secret.

Foundation arrangement

And now, the outline of the future gazebo has been drawn, pegs are clogged in the corners, and twine is stretched between them. What are your next steps? Options for the development of events may be different.

First way

You can first build a podium, a terrace - whatever you want, call it, and already install the racks of the building frame on it. In any case, this is how they are assembled, as well as glazed octagonal gazebos purchased as a kit from the manufacturer. According to this principle, you can build any gazebo, but much depends on the design of the support on which it has to be erected.

So:

  • If the soil is weak, water-saturated, the building has to be raised higher. In this case, construction is carried out on screw piles. Moreover, they are screwed not only in the corners and center, but also provide additional support points for the beams of the base of the gazebo floor, as well as for arranging the entrance to it - this is clearly visible in the photo below.

  • We will not dwell on the technology of mounting a screw foundation now. If you have the same case, watch master classes from professionals, take two assistants - and go for it. After the pile field is ready, the foundation is tied. As a rule, it looks like this: if the piles protrude above the ground by more than 60-65 cm, they are tied with a metal corner just below the heads.
  • In other cases, it is enough to tie with a beam, which serves as the base of the gazebo floor. The opposite corners of the polyhedron are also connected by beams. One of them, the central one, should be solid (diametrical), and the rest are attached to it with radii (halves) and fixed with spacers or corners. From above, all connections of the strapping beam are rigidly fixed with metal plates.

  • The beam for strapping is usually taken with a rectangular section, for example: 100 * 80 mm. During installation, it is placed on the edge - so it can withstand higher loads. At the points of its support, there must be gaskets in the form of strips of roofing material.
  • By the way, the greatest strength of your gazebo will be ensured if not planed, but glued beams are used for the construction of load-bearing structures. It is not only more durable, but also has a low moisture permeability coefficient.

As soon as the arrangement of the base is over, the flooring is immediately mounted and a gazebo is assembled on the finished podium.

Second way

If the soil is strong and dry, it is enough to put half-buried concrete blocks in the corners and center as supports for the gazebo, or it can be pillars made of bricks. Simply put, .

  • In this situation, the procedure for assembling the gazebo is slightly different: vertical racks are set up in parallel with the strapping beam, then the upper perimeter is strapped, and only then the logs are mounted and the floor is sheathed.

  • At the same time, the size of the timber for the racks can be used the same as for the floor frame, or you can take the material with a square section. The upper trim, like the roof rafters, can be made with a beam of 100 * 50 mm, or even 100 * 30 mm. In any case, the size of the lumber is selected based on the dimensions of the building, and not for reasons of economy. But in general, the more massive the racks, the more harmonious and soundly the gazebo looks.
  • If you still don’t want to make extra costs, keep in mind that the more compact and lighter the structure is, the more carefully you need to pay attention to the process of fixing the supporting structures on the foundation. Vertical posts can be mounted on a embedded reinforcing bar or plate for bolting, or they themselves are embedded in the ground or masonry.

It all depends on which version of the foundation is chosen. By the way, it can be a monolithic concrete slab. And if the gazebo is made massive enough - so as not to be blown away in the event of a strong wind, then it will not have to be fixed to the base.

Walling

After the frame is exposed and tied, it is the turn of the enclosing structures. These include the roof, as well as filling the spans of the walls, which, however, may not be.

The nuances of assembling the roof frame

There are different technologies for assembling the roof frame, and one of them looks like this. The rafter system of the gazebo, which has the shape of a regular octahedron, has several structural elements.

In kits purchased from the manufacturer, these are usually parts in maximum factory readiness: the rafters themselves, stretching the rafters, large and small mounting panels, support beam.

  • Their assembly is carried out strictly according to the manufacturer's instructions, and it looks something like this. A support beam is installed between the mounting panels and fixed with 8 * 80 mm self-tapping screws. On a small shield, eight through holes for a screw 8 * 40 mm are drilled according to the number of rafters. Through them, with the help of nuts, steel corners are fixed. Further, rafters will be attached to these corners.

  • When self-cutting and assembling the elements of the truss system, instead of two mounting panels, one support column is used, which also has eight faces. These metal mounting elements are attached to the post, which you see in the picture above - they serve as a support for the rafters.
  • You can assemble the system on the ground, and then use the lifting mechanism to install the roof in place. If it is not possible to raise the entire structure at once, four rafters are first assembled on the ground (through one), installed upstairs, and then the missing elements are delivered. How it looks in the finished version, you can see in the next photo.

  • Depending on the chosen roofing material, the outer side of the rafters is sheathed with laths, or OSB is completely sheathed with slabs, on top of which tiles are mounted. From the inside, by analogy with the floor, you can hem it with a board or use a soffit for this purpose.

Soffits are perforated siding panels that are usually used to hem roof overhangs on buildings. Holes on the form factor of the panels prevent the accumulation of condensate inside the structure, and this is very important for horizontal surfaces.

Filling of spans between racks

The gazebo can be completely closed and be a kind of house with solid walls and glazing, or it can be filled only along the lower perimeter, which plays a decorative role.

So:

  • The space between the vertical posts of the gazebo is used to create a beautiful appearance from the outside, and from the inside, as a rule, seats are mounted between them. To fill the walls of the closed version of the gazebo, a board with “block house” sections and an imitation of a bar, as well as siding panels, both long and basement, are more often used.

  • Hinged, sliding, or blind glazed frames, stained-glass windows, double-glazed windows and even blinds can be used as windows. As for semi-closed arbors, then there are the greatest opportunities for design - what is enough for your imagination.
  • Let's look at one of the easiest options for self-execution - these are paneled fences. They are assembled separately, from boards 50 * 100 mm, which serve as the lower support and railings, and 10 * 100 mm, from which vertical decorative elements are made.

  • First, the perimeter of the fence is assembled, and then filled with panels. The board is pre-cut into blanks, mechanical processing is immediately performed: wood cutting, milling, grinding. The panels can be mounted at some distance or close, with a selection of grooves using a milling cutter.
  • They can also alternate with bars: the panel is turned outward, and the bar is turned inward - or vice versa. Railings can also be processed in various ways, or they can be not just a handrail, but a narrow frame filled with a diagonal stuffing of slats. The same frames can be used to decorate the upper perimeter of the gazebo. Ready-made shields are mounted in grooves specially selected in the frame racks.

By the way, according to this principle, you can complete the entire fence or completely fill the spans of the walls with openwork frames, leaving only the passage free. As you can see, there is a good opportunity to apply all your abilities and creative ingenuity.

And yet, it will be needed in order to make comfortable seats inside. It is most logical when in an octagonal gazebo they are located around the perimeter. Their shape, as well as the methods of fastening, can be very different, but this is already a topic for a separate article.

What are the features of the construction of a gazebo with barbecue

It will help to get full pleasure from the rest and cook your favorite dishes in nature. An octagonal shape, which will be the most suitable for this. An example of such a gazebo can be seen in the photo below.

Almost any materials are used for its construction, but it should be borne in mind that this is a capital structure.

Therefore, the base is usually chosen:

  • A rock.
  • Metal.
  • Brick.

These materials will not catch fire from the accidental appearance of a spark flying out of the barbecue, which makes the gazebo safer. You can also use a tree, having previously treated it with a fire-fighting composition.

Do-it-yourself octagonal gazebo can be with any type of barbecue.

He can be:

  • Stationary. Materials for its manufacture are used:
  1. metal. These are the most inexpensive, but also short-lived designs;
  2. cast iron. Such products keep the temperature well, improve the taste of cooked food, but are more expensive;
  3. red brick or stone. Usually these ovens also have niches for firewood and work surfaces for cutting meat and vegetables are located on them, which makes them more convenient. However, if the owners make a barbecue once a season, then you can get by with an inexpensive metal one.
  • Portable. Such barbecues are placed anywhere, they are quite compact.

After choosing a brazier, you can proceed to the construction of the structure. An octagonal gazebo with a barbecue is erected in the same sequence as without it.

But it is necessary to take into account:

  • If the owners of the site decided to use a heavy stationary barbecue in the gazebo, then a foundation is needed for it, preferably solid and 20 centimeters larger on all sides than the planned dimensions of the barbecue.
  • The presence of a chimney for such a construction, through which hot air circulates, which also makes its own adjustments to the design of the gazebo. To avoid a roof fire, the pipe is insulated with non-combustible mineral wool.

One of the best options for organizing a place to relax, which will not only be convenient, but also decorate a summer cottage, is an octagonal gazebo with your own hands. Like any other building of this type, it can be open or closed, and any material can be used to make it. The only difficulty in construction lies in the special geometry of the structure, but when drawing up detailed drawings, even an octagonal shape will not cause inconvenience.

Designing a gazebo

The main part of the preparation for work is to draw up a detailed design of the structure. It must include.

  • Arbor location. It must be carefully chosen - the building must be illuminated by sunlight, protected from the wind and prying eyes, so that it is as comfortable as possible. The ideal place would be an elevated point of the site, located in an open space. At the same time, the design should not interfere with neighbors.
  • Design. In order for the gazebo to become a decoration of the site, organically fit into it, and not stand out against the background of the environment, it is best to perform it in the general style with a country house. It is necessary to choose the optimal dimensions. When designing an octagonal gazebo, the drawings must be drawn up taking into account these dimensions.
  • Enumeration of the materials used. Everything is suitable for construction - from plastic pipes to wrought iron, but wood will be the best choice. It is easy to process, environmentally friendly and aesthetic. In addition, you can use improvised materials.

The drafted project should be certified by the controlling institutions to make sure that the construction of the gazebo will not violate any legal norms. Without this, in the future, the structure may be demolished as a squatter.

The main thing when drawing up a drawing is to build a regular octagon. This can be done in two ways.

  1. From a square. A square is built, then it is divided into 9 equal parts, after which the corners of the figure are cut off.
  2. From the circle. The circle is divided into 8 equal sectors with four diameters, after which the ends of the straight lines are connected.

If there are difficulties with the design, drawings can be ordered from a special organization. After that, it remains only to purchase materials and assemble a gazebo with your own hands. The option is less economical, but the design will definitely turn out to be of high quality.

The gazebo supports will stand on the elements of a pile foundation, the bearing capacity of which is quite enough for a light wooden structure. There will be 9 piles - one for each corner of the building and one in the center to hold the floor. The supports should be deepened by at least 60 cm in order to go beyond the depth of soil freezing - otherwise, in the fall, the structure will be squeezed out of the ground by the force of soil expansion.

The work is as follows.

  1. In the pits, a pillow is made of sand and gravel 70 mm thick. This layer must be carefully compacted.
  2. A tubular formwork is dug into the ground, which is then filled with a cement-sand mixture.
  3. When the concrete hardens, an adjustable anchor is attached to it. Instead, you can use a recessed anchor (you need to install it before the concrete hardens); in addition, you can simply drown the ends of the wooden posts in concrete. Reliability will be about the same.
  4. The racks are fixed in the chosen way. The evenness of the installation should be checked with a plumb or water level. If the supports are buried in concrete, temporary struts should be constructed so that the posts do not warp when the material hardens.

If a strip foundation is used instead of a column foundation, the essence of the work will be the same, only concrete will be poured into a trench with formwork. The frame of the gazebo must be rigid, therefore, a bar with a section of 100x100 mm is used for its construction. Above and below, a horizontal strapping is made from a bar with a section of 50x100 mm - the floor of the gazebo will be attached to the bottom, and the rafter system to the top.

All wooden elements should be treated with antiseptic and antifungal impregnations to avoid their rapid deterioration.

Arrangement of the floor and fence

The next stage in the construction of an octagonal gazebo with your own hands is the arrangement of the floor covering. It is done on logs, for which you can use boards with a section of 50x150. They are attached to the bottom harness with metal clamps or self-tapping screws screwed in at an angle. The basis of the lag system is two crosses connecting the supports. These logs will divide the floor into sectors in accordance with the drawing. Then each of the sectors is additionally reinforced with T-shaped struts.

Thematic material:

After that, a flooring made of boards or a wood-polymer composite is laid on the logs. Each sector of the floor is sheathed separately; boards are cut in such a way that the angle corresponds to the angle of the main lag. The joint between the boards of different sectors should fall in the middle of the log. To fix the boards, two self-tapping screws are screwed in at both ends.

If desired, the tree can not be used - the floor is easily made from paving slabs or simply poured with concrete. The choice is almost unlimited, it all depends on the project and the imagination of the designer.

  • supports - in their role are the racks of the gazebo;
  • railings - they are made by analogy with horizontal strapping, they should not be cut into supports, as this will reduce the bearing capacity of the racks - it is better to fix them with corners or metal brackets;
  • balusters - they can be of any shape, installed with any step, they are attached to the railing using self-tapping screws screwed through the timber.

In addition, it is worth making a frieze - it is constructed in the same way as a fence, only along the upper edge of the gazebo. Its details can be cut with a jigsaw from thin boards - the bearing capacity of the frieze is not needed. To hide the fasteners that fix the balusters, you should use wood putty, consisting of sawdust and PVA glue. These places should then be sanded and varnished or painted.

Installation of truss system and roofing

The truss system, on which the roof of the gazebo will be held, is the most difficult part of the octagonal structure. It is made from a 50x100 timber and a vertical trimming of an octagonal timber that will connect the ends of the rafters. The other end of each board will be attached to the support posts.

The truss system is constructed as follows.

  1. A beam of such length is selected so that after joining in the center of the arbor, it protrudes 150-200 mm beyond the edge of the arbor.
  2. From the end, the beam is cut at an angle of 22.5 °, so that the rafters can be conveniently connected to each other.
  3. The bars are connected at the point of convergence in pairs, screwed with self-tapping screws to the central bar.
  4. The opposite end of the beam is screwed to the vertical support of the gazebo.

After all the rafters are installed, the roof is sheathed with plywood or boards. Roofing material is laid on top of this base to protect it from precipitation, then roofing material is mounted. Any roof can be used, but it is best to match the roof of the house. The best options are tiles, metal tiles, ondulin. You can also leave the wooden roof, treating it with rotting impregnations and painting it. The joints of the roof edges must be protected from rain with a ridge template.

After the roof is made, the walls can be sheathed if the design of the gazebo is closed. To do this, you can use boards with a thickness of 30 mm. It is important to provide space for windows. After that, the finished gazebo is painted or stained with a suitable shade. It remains only to install benches, a table or other garden furniture inside, and a place to relax in your summer cottage will be ready for use.

Thus, independently building an octagonal gazebo in a summer cottage is not as difficult as it might seem. If desired, you can give a place to relax and a more complex shape - the main thing is to follow the rules of geometry. It should be borne in mind that it is not necessary to make a structure from boards - this is only the simplest option. More original and complex are chopped arbors, forged, brick and other options. With experience, you can cope with any task, the main thing is to take into account all the details when drawing up a project.

Every area needs a gazebo. It can be quite miniature or spacious for a large company. The octagonal gazebo is now in great demand. This design of the gazebo fits perfectly into any landscape and has a large internal area for recreation, which can easily accommodate up to 15 people.

Reasons for building

The octagonal gazebo is so convenient that its design can be called almost the most successful for decoration. Having placed benches along the edges of the inner space of the gazebo, and in the middle a table of a convenient shape, it is possible to accommodate a large number of guests. At the same time, during a conversation, everyone will see the face of his interlocutor, and no one will interfere with each other while eating.

This gazebo differs in the design of the roof, which repeats the octagonal shape. Thanks to this, the roof of the gazebo has several slopes, and the anchor points that support the roof will surely withstand even the thickest layer of snow cover. Due to the fact that the slopes are at an angle, precipitation will not accumulate on the roof.

Important! If the overhang is of sufficient size, then gusts of wind and slanting rain will not get inside the gazebo.

If at the initial stage you carefully consider the design of such a gazebo, then it will not be difficult to recreate the design on the site even without the presence of assistants. And if you still have experience in carpentry, then all the work will go much faster.

To form a drawing of a gazebo, it will be necessary to accurately foresee all the nuances and enter the dimensions of the future structure into the document. It is best if the images are made in different planes so that all the features of the building can be taken into account.

Self-construction of an octagonal gazebo

Pergolas, as a rule, are installed in the depths of the garden on the site, away from the house, in order to feel the unity with nature and enjoy it.

In addition, there are a few more criteria that should be followed when looking for a place to place a gazebo:

Required Tools

To perform a high-quality wooden octagonal gazebo on the site, you will need the following materials:

  • Timber in the quantity required in accordance with the project with a size of 10 * 10 cm or 15 * 15 cm.
  • Edged board 10 * 5 cm.
  • Board for the installation of lathing under the roof. Its type is selected in accordance with the roofing material that is planned to be used.
  • Roofing material.

From the tools you will need all those that everyone has on the farm. This is:

  • Saw, jigsaw
  • square
  • Level
  • Roulette
  • screwdriver
  • Sander
  • Fasteners in the form of self-tapping screws and bolts
  • Marker for marking
  • Rope
  • Stakes

You also need to prepare a stepladder so that it is possible to work on the site without problems with those elements that cannot be reached from the ground.

Selection and arrangement of the base

For gazebos, you can use various types of bases, their choice depends on the soil that lies on the site and the capabilities of the owner.

For an octagonal gazebo, it is very important that all sides are the same width, and for this you will have to be especially careful about marking the area for the foundation. Necessary actions:

  1. Mowing the grass in the area.
  2. Marking in the form of a square with a side that is equal to the length or width of the gazebo.

Important! All corners of the square must be at an angle of 90 degrees.

  3. To get perfect angles at all corners of the square, you need to drive in pegs and pull the rope diagonally. The resulting diagonals must match. If this is not the case, then some of the elements are moved to create the correct angles. In order to make sure that the square is correct, you need to check all the corners with a building square.
  4. Dividing each side of the square into three identical parts and driving a peg into these places.
  5. Connecting with a rope all the pegs that are in the middle of each side. The result is a beveled square.
  6. With the correct layout, all the resulting sides will be equal, and the pegs from the first square can be removed from the site, since they will no longer be needed.

The octagonal gazebo can be marked in another way:

  1. On the selected site, it is necessary to drive a peg in the middle.
  2. Tie a rope to it, equal in length to the length of the future gazebo.

Important! You need to fix it so that it is possible to move it in a circle.

  3. At the end of the rope you need to tie a peg with which a circle is drawn.
  4. Draw a diameter through this circle, place another one perpendicular to it and thereby reach 4 lines of diameter.
  5. Connect all the points on the circle to each other. You should get an octagon with equal sides.
