How to make a bath shelf. The right shelf for your bath - and a comfortable stay is guaranteed! Shelf assembly process

Bath "furniture" is a maximum of functionality, without any decorative and structural surpluses. Shelves and benches are traditionally made of natural wood, which is ideal for use in a steam room. Simplicity of design and easy-to-process material allow even a non-professional to independently assemble bath furniture, thereby saving up to 30% of the money spent on the setting of the steam room. Below in a step-by-step guide we will tell you how to make it yourself.

Do-it-yourself bath shelves

A shelf is a wooden structure consisting of several shelves, which are located at different levels relative to each other. As a rule, the dimensions of each shelf should allow a person to freely take a horizontal position. The presence of a shelf allows those who soar to choose the intensity of heat - according to the principle of convection, hot air rises, respectively, the higher the shelf is, the stronger the heat will be.

The shelf consists of a massive supporting frame and sheathing boards, without any decorative elements. The general view of the structure is in many ways reminiscent of the structure of a wooden porch with steps, where each step is a shelf. Shelves can consist of one, two or three levels-shelves, depending on the dimensions of the steam room and the wishes of the owner. Self-assembly of the shelf is carried out in several stages:

layout

First of all, it is necessary to determine the size and structure of the future sunbed. The shelves in the Russian bath traditionally consist of one or two levels, while the Finnish sauna requires at least three shelves. You should also pay attention to the fact that in the Russian bath on the shelves they are lying down, and in the Finnish sauna they bathe mainly while sitting. There are several basic rules to be guided by when designing a shelf:

 • Shelf height calculation. The minimum distance between the uppermost shelf and the ceiling should be at least 1.1 m. The optimal value is 1.5 m or more - approximately this distance is necessary for free manipulation of the broom.
 • Location of levels. The distance between the levels can vary from 60 to 40 cm - a smaller distance contributes to a smoother temperature transition. The lowest tier should rise above the floor by at least 30 cm.
 • The length of the beds. The minimum length of the lounger should be at least 1.5 m - this distance is enough to sit with your legs crossed. To comfortably occupy a lying position, the sunbed must be at least two meters in length.
 • Bed width. The minimum width of the lounger must be at least 0.6 m so that you can sit comfortably on it. To take a lying position, you need from 0.9 to 1.2 m, depending on individual needs. An exception may be the lowest tier, which is used as a step - its width can be reduced to 0.4 m.

The parameters of the future lounger should be selected based on individual preferences and anatomical features. For example, for someone, 1.75 m of length will be quite enough, but for someone even 2 m will be cramped. The shape of the shelves can be rectangular, "L" or "P" shaped - in this case, the choice is made based on personal preferences and the volume of the room, since the form factor does not provide any functional advantages. There are also ready-made drawings of a shelf for a steam room, which can be found below.

Material selection

Traditionally, sauna shelves are made of natural wood. It should be borne in mind that not every type of wood is suitable for use in conditions of high temperature and high humidity. There are several types of wood that are used with varying degrees of success to assemble a shelf:

 • Spruce and pine. Cheap and easy to process material. The main disadvantage of this type of wood is the high content of resins and minerals, which literally begin to flow out at high temperatures. This disadvantage can be partially smoothed out by the manufacturer, through high-quality processing and drying, but, alas, not on the domestic market.
 • Aspen. Strong and durable material. Aspen wood is well suited for use in a steam room, as it does not emit hot resin when heated. At the same time, the cost of aspen is quite high.
 • Linden. Wood of medium strength. It is considered an ideal material for bath beds - linden dries quickly, heats up slowly and is easy to process. At the same time, the cost of linden wood is quite democratic. The only drawback of linden is the rapid darkening in the steam room with insufficiently good ventilation.
 • Abashi. African oak. It grows in a hot climate, which perfectly adapts the wood for use in a steam room. Abachi wood has low thermal conductivity and good strength. A characteristic disadvantage is the exorbitant cost.
 • Birch. Wood of medium strength. It is rarely used for the manufacture of bath beds, since at high humidity it is quickly affected by a fungus and begins to rot. This disadvantage is partially compensated by special processing, but even in this case, it is undesirable to use birch in a steam room.

Regardless of which type of wood is preferred, care should be taken to ensure that there are no knots in the material. It is not always possible to achieve their complete absence, however, their excessive amount will significantly weaken the strength of the structure. This circumstance is especially important when buying a beam for a supporting frame. When purchasing flooring material, it is advisable to give preference to boards with already ground corners or order this operation from the manufacturer.

Material calculation

A beam with a minimum section of 50x70 mm is used as a material for the supporting frame. For tying the carriers, a board of 20x80 mm and above is used. In this case, it is appropriate to be guided by the principle "the thicker the better" - a massive supporting structure can withstand any weight, especially when it comes to a three-tier deck chair. As a flooring, boards with a thickness of 10 mm can be used.

The calculation of the material is carried out based on the design features and its dimensions. The support beam and the strapping board are sold in running meters, and the deck boards in square meters. As an example, consider a drawing of a traditional three-tier shelf.

The optimal distance between the bearing supports is about 60 cm, respectively, for the construction of a three-tiered lounger with a height of 1.2 m, a length of 2 m and a shelf width of 0.6 m, 14.4 linear meters of timber will be needed (six bearing supports for each tier, corresponding length). You will also need 5.4 m of beams for transverse connections (one for each pair of load-bearing supports).

The boards tie the structure along the perimeter from above and below / in the middle, the required number of linear meters is determined by calculating the perimeter of each shelf multiplied by two. For the above construction, you will need 31.2 linear meters of the board (double the perimeter of the shelf, multiplied by the number of tiers).

The number of square meters of cladding is determined by multiplying the length of the lounger by its width. In this case, you need 3.6 square meters of board to sheathe all three sunbeds (the length of the shelf, multiplied by its width, multiplied by three).

Note! The above calculations take into account only the functional elements of the lounger, they do not include sidewall trim, if any. It should also be borne in mind that an additional 15% should be added to the figures obtained, which fall on unforeseen expenses, marriage, etc.

To assemble a three-tier shelf, according to the above drawing, you will need the following materials:

 • Six racks of 1.2 m
 • Six racks of 0.8 m
 • Six racks of 0.4 m
 • Twelve boards 2 m long
 • Twelve boards of 0.6 cm
 • 6 sq. m board
 • screws
 • metal corners
 • wooden nails

Tools

For self-assembly of a multi-tiered lounger, you will need the following set of tools:

 • Wood saw
 • screwdriver
 • Drill
 • Mallet (wooden mallet)
 • Roulette
 • A hammer
 • Chisel

For mounting the flooring, the use of wooden nails is most preferable - metal fasteners will get very hot, which can lead to burns. It is possible to mount screws on the reverse side, but this is not very convenient, not reliable enough and requires perfect calculation.

Installation instructions

There are several options for assembling a multi-tiered sunbed, in this case, the assembly of a traditional rectangular shelf, which is used most often, will be considered. The assembly order is as follows:

 1. First of all, the frame of the uppermost tier is assembled. Self-tapping screws can be used for assembly. The first row of vertical bearing racks is screwed to the wall in increments of 60 cm. Previously, at the top of the beam, a “step” is formed for fastening “into the lock”.
 2. Opposite the installed carriers, a second row of supports with similar "steps" is set up. The tops of the racks are connected by a transverse beam. Side racks, if possible, also need to be screwed to the walls.
 3. All corner joints are reinforced with metal corners for reliability.
 4. Installed carriers are tied with boards from above and below / in the middle.
 5. The next level is formed in the same way. The load-bearing beam is fixed to the previous tier and, if possible, screwed to the walls.
 6. The frame is sheathed with boards, with a mandatory gap of at least 1 cm. There must be a free gap of at least 10 cm between the walls of the steam room and the flooring to ensure ventilation. To drive wooden nails with a drill, holes are drilled of the same or larger diameter by 1–2 mm.

If desired, metal self-tapping screws can be used to mount the flooring, however, in this case, it is necessary to “drown” the hats to a depth of 5 mm in order to subsequently close them with a wooden cork. To avoid the formation of cracks, the attachment point is superficially drilled with a drill, the diameter of which corresponds to the diameter of the screw head.

Finishing and coating

For additional finishing and coating of the shelf, you can use special varnishes and impregnations that will protect the wood from decay, mold and darkening. It should be noted that, ideally, the wood in the steam room cannot be processed - just sanding the surface is enough. With good ventilation, the structure of the tree does not deteriorate during the entire period of operation. However, if ventilation is far from ideal, it is better to resort to the help of special compounds, among which the following are most often used:

 • Acrylic varnishes. Moisture-resistant acrylic-based varnishes create a protective film on the surface of the wood, which protects the structure from moisture. This type of varnish does not change its structure at temperatures above 100°C, which allows them to be used even in Finnish saunas.
 • Impregnation. Antiseptic impregnations prevent the formation of mold and make wood more moisture resistant. Unlike varnish, impregnation penetrates deep into the wood structure, providing comprehensive protection.
 • Bleachers. Specialized compounds through which you can bleach a darkened tree.

Before applying any of the above compositions, the surface of the wood must be sanded with sandpaper and cleaned of dust resulting from grinding. You should not buy cheap products from little-known manufacturers - high humidity and temperature can cause the release of toxic substances from low-quality formulations.

Other furniture: a step-by-step guide to assembling a headrest

A headrest is a small wooden fixture that plays the role of a pillow in a steam room. The presence of a headrest allows you to comfortably sit on a shelf, relaxing the muscles of the neck and spine. The design of the headrest is simple and contains a minimum of elements, which allows you to assemble it yourself without any difficulties.

Material selection and calculation

The material for the wooden "cushion" is selected in the same way as in the case of the shelf - the headrest is operated under the same conditions. The headrest is based on two bearing supports and cross rails. In addition to the traditional linden and aspen, cedar, ofram, meranti, abachi and bamboo are also used to assemble the headrest. Small dimensions allow the use of exotic wood species without the risk of going beyond the budget. When purchasing material, it is necessary to ensure that there are no knots.

The dimensions of the headrest are primarily determined by the dimensions of the lounger - it can be of the same width or narrower. The ideal dimensions, in terms of the structure of the human body, are 40 cm long, 45 cm wide and 10 cm high. To assemble a traditional headrest, you will need the following amount of material:

 • Two blanks 40 cm long and 10 cm high. The minimum thickness of the boards should be at least 2 cm.
 • Rail 40x20 mm, length 3.7 m
 • Wooden dowels, 16-18 pieces, depending on the number of crossbars.

If desired, metal self-tapping screws can be used for assembly, however, in this case, they must be recessed into the surface of the rail and masked with a wooden cork. The presence of a cork is mandatory - this is the only way to exclude the possibility of a burn.

Tools

To assemble the headrest, you will need the following tools:

 • jigsaw
 • Wood saw
 • Roulette
 • Drill / screwdriver
 • Mallet (wooden mallet)
 • Pencil
 • Sandpaper

Assembly instructions

Self-assembly of the headrest is carried out in the following order:

If desired, the sidewalls can be formed in the form of an arch, a wave, etc. - the main criterion for choosing a shape is the personal preferences and imagination of the master. Ready-made headrests do well without a protective coating, since after bath procedures they are dried and stored in a place with good ventilation.

How to make a bench for a bath with your own hands

In addition to the stationary shelf, the steam room can also be equipped with portable benches and benches. This is not the most important part of bath furniture - many lovers of healing steam can do without them. Bath benches perform an auxiliary function, they are often used as a step, stand or a secondary place for receiving procedures. Usually there is no more than one shop in the steam room, although in many respects it depends on the size of the room.

Material selection and calculation

This type of bath furniture is distinguished by its simplicity of design - it is quite easy to make a traditional “P” shaped bench on your own. The material is selected according to the same criteria as in the case of the shelf. The height and width of the bench can be absolutely anything, the universal standard is considered to be a length of 1.5 m, a width of 0.4 m and a height of 0.4 m. Such dimensions allow the bench to be used both for comfortable sitting and as a stand or an additional step.

To assemble a universal bench, you will need the following materials:

 • Bar with a section of 7x15 cm. Four bars of 35 cm each
 • Four parts from a bar, section 7x15 cm
 • Two one and a half meter boards, 20 cm wide, 2 cm thick
 • Two boards / beams for cross connection, 40 cm long
 • Self-tapping screws / wooden dowels

Tools

To assemble the bench, you need the following tools:

 • Wood saw
 • Drill
 • Screwdriver / mallet
 • A hammer
 • Chisel
 • Sandpaper

Assembly instructions

Self-assembly of the bench is carried out in the following order:

 1. Grooves are cut out on the legs for “locking” connection. To form a groove, parallel cuts are cut with a depth and a gap of 7 cm. The base of the cut is knocked out with a chisel.
 2. Trapezoidal parts are formed from four bars, which will play the role of an adapter between the leg and the seat. At the top of the trapezoid, a groove is formed for connection with the legs.
 3. The legs are connected to the adapter in the groove. The junction is fixed by means of a self-tapping screw or dowel, twisted / driven into a pre-drilled hole.
 4. A bench seat is assembled from two boards and crossbars. The distance between the boards should be at least 1 cm.
 5. The legs are screwed / nailed to the seat. If self-tapping screws are used as fittings, then fastening is carried out from the reverse side. Mounting holes are pre-drilled.

The assembled shop is completely sanded with sandpaper. Ideally, the finished bench is left in its natural state, without any coating or processing. If desired, for additional protection, you can use high quality acrylic varnishes and impregnations intended for use in a steam room.

By furnishing a steam room with your own hands, you can save money on the services of specialists. In this case, the result will not look artisanal - the simplicity of the design creates ideal conditions for self-assembly. If you follow the assembly technology, you will get a worthy result of your efforts!

First of all, it should be noted that the shelves in the Russian bath are called differently. I have seen such accents: shelves, shelves, shelves, shelves. Personally, I prefer to say regiments.

As I wrote in my article "", most of the baths in our country are far from Russian baths, but are essentially dry-air steam rooms or saunas. Therefore, the shelves in these baths have a device far from the regiments of the Russian bath. In most baths, shelves are arranged in steps at two or three levels. The width of the shelves usually does not exceed 500-600mm. This design of the shelves is due to the fact that in saunas and dry-air steam rooms it is not customary to lie on the shelves, but it is customary to sit. In this article, I will only talk about the correct shelves in the Russian bath. And I highly do not recommend the widespread shelves in the form of steps at several levels in steam Russian baths.

In the steam room of the Russian bath, on the contrary, it is customary to lie down, and not sit. Moreover, the width of the shelves is usually selected from 850mm to 1200mm. On such wide shelves you can lie spread out, and not huddle in narrow spaces. In the Russian bath, it makes no sense to climb under the ceiling, as in saunas or dry-air steam rooms. Because the principle of soaring in Russian baths is completely different. Therefore, shelves in such baths are located on one, maximum two, levels.

What parameters should a canopy in a steam room in a Russian bath have? First of all, it should be wide from 850mm to 1200mm. This allows you to comfortably sit on it lying down. Highly recommend, don't skimp on shelf width! The length of the shelf should be at least 2 m, and preferably 2.2-2.5 m. An adult should fit freely on it lying down, without resting his feet against the wall.

The thickness of the shelf board is selected according to the principle "the thicker the better." The optimal thickness is 60-80mm. This is significantly thicker than the standard shelf boards sold around the world. And they are sold because in saunas and dry-air steam rooms the thickness of the board of the shelf does not really matter. But in the Russian bath, the thickness of the shelf is of great importance. The thicker the canopy, the more heat it can accumulate, and then gently give it to the person lying on it. There is no need to lay anything on the shelves in the steam room of the Russian bath. The shelves are always pleasantly warm, but not scalding, like all wooden surfaces in the steam rooms of the Russian bath.

A very important point is the height of the shelf. Many people think that it is better to make the canopy higher. But this is far from always correct and justified. The height of the shelf is measured from the surface on which the bather stands. If he stands directly on the floor of the steam room, then from the floor. If a wooden ladder is provided in the steam room, then from the surface of the ladder. I consider the correct height of the shelf to be the one that will correspond to the height from the floor or a wooden ladder to the level of the knuckles of a palm gathered into a fist with the bather's hand completely lowered. Usually it is 70-90 cm, depending on the height of the bather. Many novice lovers of the Russian bath are afraid of such a small height of the shelf from the floor. But you don't have to be afraid. Do not think that there will be no steam on such a low shelf. In the right bath, with the right bather, the steamer will catch up with steam on the steamer as much as necessary. And it's very good that the steamer is below the level of the steam cake under the ceiling. It is an indescribable pleasure when the steamer is in a soft zone with a relatively low temperature and where it is easy to breathe, and the steamer wraps him in a blanket of velvety and fluffy steam. When you need steam, you can catch up more, you can completely remove all the steam from the steaming zone. Such contrasts and different methods of working with the steam of good bathers make vaping an unforgettable experience. If the canopy is made higher than the size recommended by me, then it will be extremely difficult for the bather to soar with high quality. You will have to stretch to get all parts of the body with a broom, hold your hands high with brooms, and this contributes to the rapid fatigue of the bather and poor-quality steaming. The correct height of the shelf allows the steamer to correctly move the brooms without overloading the muscles of the arms and back and, accordingly, get less tired.

The canopy should be located so that it is comfortable for the bather to soar on it, there is free access along the entire length of the shelf and the distance from it should be at least 500mm.

Shelves are made from hardwood. The most popular tree for a regiment in the Russian bath is linden and aspen. It is impossible to make shelves from the newfangled now abash. This tree has a porous structure and practically does not heat up, which is contrary to the quality standards of the Russian bath. Also, coniferous wood is not used on the shelves because of the risk of resin release.

Many people ask what protective compounds should cover the shelves. Personally, I am against any coating of shelves in the Russian bath, especially newfangled impregnations for saunas. The tree must be alive and this is very important. Yes, the shelves darken quickly. But this is a noble color, indicating that they really use the bathhouse, and do not go there like a museum. Maximum, you can cover the shelves with hot natural linseed oil. The technology of such impregnation can be found on the Internet. This coverage needs to be renewed periodically. But I personally do not see any sense in it, especially if the bath is a family one.

It is very important to keep the shelves clean. Otherwise, unpleasant odors will settle in the steam room, which will then be difficult to get rid of. If we are talking not about a public, but about a family bath, I strongly do not recommend washing the shelves with any chemical detergents. After each bath, it is enough to thoroughly wipe the shelves with a specially allocated terry towel soaked in hot water. To wash the shelves efficiently, it is necessary to press the towel firmly enough during wiping and wipe with wide sweeping movements. Attention! This procedure must be carried out after each bath! Don't be lazy. It is enough not to wash the shelves a couple of times and an unpleasant smell in the steam room is guaranteed. It is better to wash the shelves while they are still warm.

Many
they sew how to properly make a support frame for shelves, what kind of wood to make it from, whether to make supports on the floor. I answer. The frame of the shelves can be made from any wood, you can rest on the floor, you need to design the framedo what is safer and more convenient. There are no universal and correct frame schemes. Some make folding shelves, for ease of cleaning or saving space in the steam room. Many people ask whether it is necessary to sew up the frame of the shelves from below, thinking that this reduces the cubic capacity of the steam room and it is easier to warm it up. I am against sheathing a frame for shelves from below with a board. This makes cleaning under the shelves impossible. And if we consider that lying on the shelves we emit sweat that drips onto the floor and accumulates there, it is necessary to wash the floors under the shelves after each bath.

It is very important to follow a number of rules when designing a shelf in terms of its adjoining to the walls of the steam room. There must be a gap of 3-5 cm between the wall and the shelf board. In no case should the shelf board be adjacent to the wall closely! This contributes to the rapid decay of the wall in the area of the junction of the shelf. Also, there must be a gap of 3-5 cm between the boards of the shelf.

The supporting frame of the shelf and the ends of the boards of the shelf itself should in no case be adjacent to the wall. If the shelf boards are 60mm or more thick, they can be fixed to the wall without any frame or floor supports. Boards of this thickness do not bend under the weight of steamers. A support bar is attached to the wall and shelf boards are already attached to it. Since the support bar cannot be fixed close to the wall, it is fixed through spacers. Spacers are usually metal washers or nuts. If a support frame is used for a shelf, then its racks and supporting surfaces are also attached to the wall through spacers. This is necessary so that the air passes freely through the structure of the shelf and the wall, and the wood of the wall at the junction of the shelf does not rot.

The shelf board is attached to the supporting surface only from below! You should not screw the self-tapping screw through the shelf board, as its head can heat up and create unpleasant sensations upon contact with the body of the steamers.

Location
The division of regiments in the steam room is most often done with the letter "G". A working canopy is selected, on which they will soar. This is usually the longest shelf with the most convenient approach to it for the bather. The second canopy is usually calledheating. There, during soaring, you can place another person who will warm up while the steamer is working with another visitor steam room on the working shelf. The heating canopy can be made higher than the working one. But this is not always advisable, especially if space in the steam room does not allow. If there is enough space in the steam roomoh, then you can organize auxiliary shelves for tubs and brooms, children's, lower shelves, and so on. If the shelves are arranged in two tiers, then steps or stable benches should be provided for the convenience of climbing and descending from them.

Building a sauna with your own hands, without using the services of professional builders of saunas and baths, you may be faced with the question: "But how to assemble the structure under the shelves ?!" After all, sunbeds must be strong and reliable, withstand a lot of weight.

We recommend using planed, dry material for the construction.
Shelves, and this is exactly the material on which they sit or lie, choose from the right types of wood: cedar, linden, abash. Why exactly them?
The wood of these species has a low thermal conductivity, thanks to which you and your guests will feel comfortable in the sauna without burning your body on the boards. Fasten the shelves with self-tapping screws in a hidden way, from the inside. We do not recommend using nails for assembly, yet they are not strong enough and in the future it will be more difficult to disassemble the structure, and you may need this when replacing shelves.

Required tools and fasteners

You will need the following tool:

 1. Roulette.
 2. Level.
 3. Square.
 4. Wood saw.
 5. Cordless screwdriver with Phillips bits.
 6. Electric drill.
 7. Wood drill set.
 8. Crosshead screwdriver.
 9. Wooden hammer (mallet).
 10. A hammer.
 11. Pencil and ruler.
 12. Abrasive paper for coarse and fine work.
 13. Self-tapping screws "Chipboard" for wood 4.0x40,4.5x70, 5.0x90.

Below is the frame of the shelves with digital indicators corresponding to the assembly order.

 1. We make markings for the rear pillars 1 and securely fasten them to the walls of the steam room. We pre-fix rubber gaskets in the lower ends of the racks.
 2. We make a preliminary installation of the upper beams 3 and 4, fixing them to the racks 1 and the walls of the steam room.
 3. Slightly fasten the upper side beams 5 and 6 to the rear pillars 1 and the upper wall beams 3 and 4.
 4. Holding the front extreme racks 2, we fix the side beams 5 and 6 to them.
 5. We install the front bearing bars 7 and 8, we assemble the upper frame.
 6. Using a level, a square and a tape measure, we measure the frame, set right angles and its horizontal level. We make self-tapping screws.
 7. In a similar way, we assemble the lower frames from structural elements 9-15.
 8. We check the correct assembly of the frame of the shelves, finally expose all the elements, maintaining the required dimensions, angles, horizontals and verticals.
 9. We fix jumpers 16, 17 with 18.
 10. We tighten all the screws until they stop.

The design of the shelf and its dimensions depend on the area of the steam room. With high ceilings, you can make seats in three tiers. For comfortable soaring, the distance from the top shelf to the ceiling should be 30-40 cm from the head of a seated person.

Have you decided to build a bath? This is a wonderful idea! In this article you will find information on how to make shelves in the bath with your own hands. Below you will see what options exist, understand their design and method of creation.

Wood for the shelf

Shelf or shelf - a wooden structure in the steam room of the bath, where its visitors sit or lie. Due to high temperature, humidity and skin contact with them, the wood from which the shelves are made must have the following characteristics:

 • moisture resistance;
 • resistance to high temperatures;
 • low resin content;
 • low thermal conductivity;
 • high fiber density.

These characteristics are ideal for: linden, aspen, abachi, birch and poplar.

Abashi is a new type of wood for steam rooms and saunas. The tree comes from Africa, so its cost scares off many, but in terms of characteristics, it is ideal. Linden and aspen are more pleasing for their price. However, linden darkens rather quickly, which upsets the owners, and aspen and poplar boards that look great can turn out to be rotten inside. Nevertheless, it is aspen that today is the most popular type of wood for finishing baths and building shelves. Birch shelves do not last too long, they require special care (drying), because they are afraid of moisture and can quickly rot.

Shelf design

Proper design and placement of shelves is the main part of the task of building shelves in the bath with your own hands. In the same bath room, a different number of shelves can fit.

Shelves in the steam room can be placed as follows:

 • l-shaped placement helps to use the length of two walls and thus accommodate more people in the steam room;
 • a coupe is when all the shelves are placed on only one wall. The only possible option for small steam rooms. Usually then 2 shelves are made and the top one can be made lifting, like the top shelf in a compartment;
 • U-shaped - placing shelves on three walls of the steam room.

Depending on the size of the room, several levels of sunbeds and benches can be arranged. Usually, 3 levels are used at the maximum.

Features of the placement of shelves

If you decide to make several levels for shelves, consider the following features of their placement:

 • the bottom shelf should be at least 20-25 cm above the floor level;
 • from the top shelf to the ceiling, keep a distance of 1-1.2 meters;
 • the upper shelf is the widest, full-fledged sunbed with a width of 90 centimeters, each lower level is narrower than the previous one.

Shelf design

How to make shelves in the steam room, convenient for the whole family? If you have a large enough room, then you can place several different designs (design) there at once:

 • sunbed - the usual straight design with a slight slope or "cushion" for the head, the widest of all the shelves;
 • bench - a shelf for a seat with a width of 30 cm;
 • deck chair - shelves that allow you to take a reclining position.

Production and dimensions of shelves

Shelves in the bath must be equipped, given the ease of use. Location recommendations are above. What else do you need to consider when you make shelves in the steam room? Be sure to make the design easy to clean. The classic Russian bath is the only steam room where a massage with a broom is useful. If you do it, then consider the complexity and frequency of cleaning indoors. Perhaps it is worth making the arrangement of the shelves so that they can be easily disassembled and taken out to dry. This is especially important if you used birch or poplar wood for them.

For a Russian bath, you should also prepare a special shelf-lounger - wide (from 90 cm) and without tiers, so that it is convenient to massage with a broom.

The shelf should be attached to a strong and fairly thick beam - approximately 50x70. The support posts are interconnected by several horizontal crossbars. An additional wall mount is possible if outdoor drying is not expected.

Thin boards are attached to the support posts. Between them there must be a small gap of at least 1-2 cm for air circulation. Sand the boards well and smooth beforehand.

If you do not know how to make shelves in the steam room without using metal fasteners, then do not worry, there is nothing wrong with using them. Just screws and nails need to be deepened by 5-6 mm into a board or beam, fastened to the underside of the shelf and try to use in those places where the skin will rarely come into contact with them.

There is a certain standard regarding the size of the shelves. If you do not need to adapt to a small room or specific wishes, then the dimensions of the shelves in the steam room are recommended to be as follows:

 • bottom shelf width - 30 cm;
 • medium - 60 cm;
 • top - 90-100 cm;
 • length - 150-180 cm.

 • before starting work, make several sketches of the location of all the structures and accessories of the steam room;
 • the width of the board for the shelf to its thickness should be no more than a proportion of 1 to 4;
 • windows should be as far away from the shelves as possible. Then, in the case of cracked glass, due to high temperatures, no one will be harmed;
 • make a gap between the shelves for ventilation and ease of cleaning;
 • in a small steam room, you can additionally make a side bench for a larger number of guests or build a sunbed-shelf according to the design of the upper shelves of the compartment.

There is nothing difficult in creating shelves for a bath with your own hands if you stick to the above material. Their installation will take 1-2 days, and they will serve you for many years.

Before you make shelves in the bath with your own hands, decide on such important characteristics of their design as:

 • type of wood suitable for shelves;
 • number of storeys of the structure (two- or three-story shelves);
 • width and depth of their landing part.

Note! In steam rooms, shelves along with sheathing should be made of hardwood, since softwood releases resin at high temperatures.

However, not all deciduous trees can be used to make shelves in the steam room. The selected type of wood should have a low thermal conductivity, which allows you to comfortably place on the shelves without feeling the burning effect of the heated wood. In addition, the tree must have a sufficiently dense fiber structure, which ensures the reliability of the structure and is able to serve for a long time in conditions of critical humidity and high temperatures.

Based on the above requirements, the best option for making shelves are tree species such as aspen, linden and oak. In extreme cases, the use of maple, poplar or birch is allowed.

Typical designs

Typical two-tier or three-tier structures are installed, as a rule, between two walls of the steam room on the side opposite the wall with a window. In order to avoid heat leakage, many make a steam room without a window at all, so in this case there are no particular doubts about how to make shelves for a bath. Shelves can be located in an arbitrary place at a fairly safe distance from the cast iron furnace.

The dimensions of the shelves in the bath are usually as follows:

 • the top shelf is made the widest - starting from 90 cm and wider. The middle and lower (or one lower with a 2-tier scheme) can reach a width of up to 70 cm.
 • the length of the shelves should correspond to the dimensions of the paired compartment in this place and can have a value of the order of 1.5-1.8 meters. The dimensions of the shelves may differ markedly from those indicated, since they are chosen, as a rule, taking into account the number of visitors who simultaneously take wellness couples.

Note! When making shelves on your own in a paired compartment, try to provide small gaps between adjacent slats, thanks to which water will drain directly onto the floor. For the convenience of sitting while washing on such benches, the gaps are usually chosen no more than 1 cm. Among other things, the shelves can be equipped with inclined or vertical backs for ease of placement on them.

In the case of the manufacture of a 3-tier shelf structure, it is necessary to take into account the following requirements for it by building codes:

 • the bottom shelf should rise above the flooring by at least 60 cm, and the top shelf should not be placed higher than 1.2 meters from the ceiling. Otherwise, it will be inconvenient to accommodate a person of normal height;
 • the width of the shelves should not be less than 0.4 meters, since with such dimensions it will be impossible to lie on them in a relaxed state;
 • individual elements of the shelves are carefully polished, and they are fastened together with special nails made of hardwood (you can use wooden chopsticks);
 • stainless steel fasteners are allowed only when assembling a frame structure, which is then securely hidden under the finishing strips (boards). This is explained by the fact that at high temperature conditions in the steam room there is a great danger of getting burned on metal fasteners.

Manufacturing of regiments

As an example, consider the procedure for manufacturing shelves in two steps in a steam room with the following dimensions: in height - 2.5 meters, in length - 3.5 meters and in width - 3 meters.

In such a steam room, it is most convenient to place the shelves along the long side.

Blanks for the frame base of the shelves (12 pieces 1.1 meters long and 6 pieces 0.9 meters long) are made from standard bars with a section of 50 by 70 mm.

To equip the lower tier, you will need 6 half-meter blanks and 6 bars 1.5 meters long.

In addition, you will need three bars (boards) for a bunch of racks of the upper and lower tiers. With their help, a U-shaped structure is knocked down from the racks of the upper tier, which is then attached to the wall through wooden spacers (cubes) that protect its surface from moisture.

From a set of racks for the lower tier, an L-shaped frame is assembled (and then knocked down), which is then docked to the racks of the upper tier and securely fixed to them.

At the end of the work, boards of the upper and lower tiers are laid on the finished frame structure. The floorings are made of planed boards 20 by 120 mm 3.5 meters long (seven boards on the upper tier and four on the lower one).

To fix them, wooden nails or special pins are used. In this case, the total height of the shelves in the bath can be about 1.5 - 1.6 meters.

How to make shelves for a bath with your own hands: technology for manufacturing a structure at home

A bath is an ideal place to relax the body and soul of a person. To make the time spent in it pleasant and comfortable, you must definitely take care of installing convenient and practical wooden shelves. Of course, they can be made to order, but the cost of the finished structure will be quite high. The way out of this situation is to do it yourself. To make things a little easier, you should take the time to read this article. It provides a step-by-step description of the entire technological process for the manufacture of bath shelves with photo and video materials. Familiarize yourself with them, and the work will become exciting and interesting.

Characteristics of bath shelves, their features

Before you start making bath shelves with your own hands, you need to do some work. It includes the following steps:

 • choice of product type;
 • preparation of a design drawing;
 • definition of layout;
 • choice of material.

Product type selection

To date, there are three types of bath shelves:

 • benches: bench shelves are the most common version of such bath structures. They are ideal for both spacious steam rooms and small spaces.
 • couches - they are less popular than benches, but they can also be found in baths. Often they are chosen by people who like to bathe not only sitting, but also lying down.

 • sun loungers - their design is practically no different from beach counterparts. During bath procedures, they are used as a couch, in the unfolded state, or as an armchair, in the assembled state.

Making a drawing

After the type of bath shelf is selected, you can begin to build a drawing of the future design. It will help to make a really high-quality and practical product with your own hands.

Important! To make a drawing of a bath shelf - you do not need to be a professional, just use one of the specialized computer programs (or remember how to use a pen and a ruler correctly).

During the construction of the shelf drawing, it is necessary to take into account the overall dimensions of the steam room itself. Also, do not forget to indicate on it all the design parameters that will help to correctly calculate the amount of material.

Determination of the layout of regiments, options

Determining the layout of the shelves is the next stage of work. It has a large number of nuances that should be taken into account in the process. Since shelves are often made exactly three-tiered, it is worth remembering a few points:

 • the number of tiers significantly affects the height of the shelves;
 • in a small steam room, the lower tier of shelves should be placed almost at floor level, leaving a minimum gap for natural ventilation;
 • experts recommend making the upper tier a little wider than the other two (it can be used as a couch);
 • the distance from the ceiling to the third tier should not be less than 100-120 cm (based on medical recommendations);
 • shelves are not recommended to be installed near windows, as there is a risk of injury as a result of glass cracking.

Experts, based on many years of experience in arranging steam rooms, recommend placing shelves according to one of the proposed options:

 1. Two or three stages. Such shelves are ideal for arranging spacious steam rooms. It is recommended to place them near a blank wall. The lower level of the design is designed for people who prefer cooler air, but the upper one is for lovers of high temperatures.
 2. Compact coupe. It is suitable for small baths, which practically do not have free space. The design of such a shelf provides for the presence of two tiers, unfolding, as in a train compartment.
 3. Universal L-shaped three-level. To install it, you will need to use two adjacent walls, they will serve as the basis for attaching the shelves. Such shelves are suitable for overall pairs.

Material selection, brief description

After the master decides on the type of product and the placement of the shelves, makes a drawing of the future design, you can proceed to the choice of material. It must meet several criteria:

 • have low thermal conductivity, which is very important;
 • do not contain resins;
 • its fibers must have a high density;
 • tolerate high temperatures well.
 1. Linden is an ideal material for shelves. It is easy to process, does not crack, tolerates moisture well, and has a very pleasant specific aroma. Its only flaw is that it quickly becomes dark under the influence of moisture.
 2. Aspen is a budget material for regiments. Although it is praised for its beneficial properties for the body, it has a significant drawback - rapid decay in a humid environment.
 3. Abashi is the highest quality wood, but very expensive. It warms up slowly, has a long service life, and retains a presentable appearance for many years.

Do-it-yourself shelf manufacturing technology: step-by-step instructions for craftsmen

Making a shelf for a steam room is not such a complicated process as it might seem at first glance. It includes several sequential steps that should be followed clearly and confidently.

 • Prepare wood for further work (grind, process corners).
 • Cover the surface of the material with a special liquid with antiseptic properties (this will eliminate the possibility of wood rotting in the future).
 • They make a frame: they install supporting wooden poles in a vertical position at a distance of 60 cm from each other, perform horizontal strapping (for durability, shelves are attached to the walls).

 • At a minimum angle (2-3 degrees), prepared thin boards are attached, which will form benches. To fasten the boards, it is imperative to use special oak wedges (unlike nails or self-tapping screws, they do not heat up), which will securely fasten the structure.
 • The shelves are fixed, leaving a small wall gap of 8-10 cm (it is designed for natural ventilation).

Important! You should definitely worry about installing a waterproofing material between the bottom edge of the shelf and the floor surface (it will provide reliable protection of the material from moisture).

 • They install additional accessories that will definitely be required while relaxing in the bath (for example, special footrests or headrests).

These simple manipulations will allow you to independently produce high-quality and reliable shelves for a steam room. Try to implement the proposed instructions, the result will not keep you waiting!

How to make shelves (canopy, shelves) in the bath with your own hands: a step-by-step guide, drawings, photos and videos

The article provides a description of the entire technological process for the manufacture of shelves for a bath. Familiarize yourself with it, and the work will become easier.

Shelves in the bath with their own hands

Nothing relaxes and cleanses the body like a Russian bath. Almost everyone dreams of building their own steam room on their site. The article will highlight important issues on the construction of shelves in the bath with your own hands, including photo and video materials for a better understanding of the whole process.

Before starting work, it is necessary to obtain basic information on the correct selection of materials for the installation of shelves in the bath and familiarize yourself with the recommendations on construction features. In advance, it is better to draw up a draft of the future structure with the implementation of sketch drawings and the calculation of the overall dimensions of each tier.

Shelf Options

The design of the shelf for the bath in the steam room depends on the size of the area and the height of the room. The shelves are located only near solid walls without windows and glazed ventilation outlets and, depending on the territorial possibilities, they can have different versions.

They can be located only near one wall in several stepped tiers or near two parallel walls opposite each other. Corner shelves in the bath are also possible with a variety of options for the arrangement of tiers.

It is better to sketch several shelf layout projects in order to choose the best option in comparison. After the location of each element is finally approved, you can begin to calculate the main dimensions of the structure and select the necessary materials.

Settlement project

The calculation of the height of a multi-tiered structure starts from the ceiling. The top shelf should be 60 cm wide and located at least 1.1 meters from the ceiling. This distance is necessary so that on the upper tier it is possible to sit normally and whip the steaming broom in a big way.

The height of each tier should be about half a meter. The lower tier should recede from the floor by at least 30 cm. It is better to make the lower step 40 cm wide removable and not attached to the floor so that it is possible to dry and wash the floor of the steam room. Based on these recommendations, the number of tiers is calculated, varying their height and optimally using the area of the room.

The choice of materials for the bath shelves

Particular attention must be paid to the correct choice of the material of the steam room shelves. Tiered structures are made of wood, but not all breeds are suitable for a bath. They must meet a number of requirements. It is best for the steam room to choose wooden boards from linden, aspen or African abachi.

These types of wood have a fairly dense, strong structure and a low thermal conductivity, so they practically do not heat up. Wood perfectly tolerates conditions of high temperatures and humidity, without losing its properties and quality of appearance. Under the influence of high temperature, such rocks emit a pleasant healing aroma of fresh wood.

Aspen, linden and abachi wood has a smooth surface with a beautiful pattern, is easy to process and has a high durability. It has antibacterial properties and is resistant to mold and other fungi.

Features of the manufacturing process

When building shelves in a bathhouse with your own hands, special talent and skills are not required. Shelves are made in the usual way, the main thing is to follow some rules. Ventilation slots with a minimum width of 10 cm must remain between the walls and shelves.

The dimensions of the timber 50x70 mm are optimal for shelves, since wood with such dimensions dries out most quickly and fully. In the manufacture of the frame of the shelf in the wooden bath, we fix the support with a board both above and below along the entire length. Removable shelves with legs should have rubber pads so as not to spoil the surface of the steam room floor.

A distance of 1 cm should be maintained between the planks of the beds. Instead of metal products, it is better to use wooden nails or pins driven into pre-drilled holes as fasteners. If metal nails are used, the caps must be driven in deeply to avoid burns when they are heated.

If you follow all the above tips on how to make shelves in the bath, and using this step-by-step guide, the process will go smoothly without any difficulties. The main thing is to correctly develop the design of the future structure and determine its dimensions in accordance with the available floor space.

How to make shelves in the steam room: the nuances of do-it-yourself manufacturing technology from A to Z

Special norms for the construction of bath shelves are dictated by the specifics of the operation of furniture that is unpretentious in the eyes of an uninitiated person. Those who wish to build bath shelves with their own hands need to learn that they are built according to a strict set of rules that ensure durability and comfort of use. Let's find out what you need to consider and how to act in order to competently equip your favorite steam room.

Standard shelving design for steam room

It is not without reason that a bath shelf is often simply called a shop. Yes, these are benches of different heights, arranged according to a special scheme. Their design includes two main elements:

 • A frame that serves as a base for fixing planks of a fixed deck or a support for a collapsible deck system. Most often, the frame is constructed from support posts, resembling the legs of a bench, and connected by transverse jumper boards. Less commonly, the frame is made according to the principle of a stair stringer, to which the steps of bath shelves are mounted. According to the technology borrowed from lovers of Finnish dry steam, the frame is sometimes built without supports in the form of a railway shelf attached to the walls of the steam room.
 • The flooring is made of linden or aspen carefully polished boards stuffed with a gap of 1.0-2.0 cm. As already mentioned, it is either attached to the frame or knocked together separate components like floor ladders. Loose flooring is more convenient to remove and ventilate outside the walls of the steam room. It serves as a seat, a couch, and a podium for the tireless attendant, who treats the mortal bodies of his clients with a fragrant broom. According to the principle of the construction of the flooring, they also knock together: the backs of the seats, the sides of the shelves, special "bath pillows" and devices for taking a relaxed "lying" posture with the legs at head level or higher.

Since the steam room is usually small in size, because a small room is easier, more economical and faster to bring to the required condition, the furniture for arranging it has an extremely simple rectangular in plan, profile and frontal geometry. For masters, the imagination usually reasonably draws a semblance of a staircase with two or three large steps. True, these steps may resemble sun loungers or corner sofas with a rounded shape. But such delights are mainly dabbled in by the owners of baths with large-sized steam rooms, who are not sorry to take up space with personal whims.

Advice. If the area of the steam room does not allow the construction of a rectangular lower shelf, it can be made triangular. That is, in plan it will be a right-angled triangle, one of the legs of which is loosely adjacent to the wall, the second to the shelf adjacent to it.

Why are bath shelves multi-stage?

According to the laws of physics familiar from the school bench, steam and heated air tend to rush upward. Having given off healing hot power and cooled under the ceiling, the air flow is partially escorted out by the ventilation system of the steam room, partially returns down, reflected from the upper ceiling by a special ceiling system. Therefore, it is much hotter at the top than at the foot of the bath "pyramid".

Multi-stage allows users to independently choose the optimal steam mode for them with the appropriate temperature background. Masters who decide to build shelves in the bath with their own hands will have to adhere to the traditional “staircase” configuration in order to provide the opportunity to both enjoy the most vigorous steam and a gentle microclimate.

In Russian steam rooms, two regiments were most often arranged. But no one forbids making three, as long as there is enough space for their installation. In the sense that there is space left for the movement of people receiving bath procedures without traumatic consequences.

Preliminary planning and calculations

Calculations and an elementary project are indispensable conditions for a successful result. Draw a preliminary small plan of the room, put down the dimensions, mark the location of equipment, window and door openings.

Attention. Shelves in the steam room are not installed along walls with glazed windows. Hot steam attacks can crack the glass, and glass fragments can injure people.

The scheme and principles of the placement of regiments

Therefore, the owners of steam rooms with windows, who decide to make their own comfortable shelves for the bath, have a limited choice. They will be able to draw a plan for a future multi-stage structure only along walls without windows and without glazed ventilation vents. The rest of the layouts are the same for everyone. Shelves can be placed:

 • a single linear object along one wall in one, two or three rows;
 • design in the form of the letter G with numerous variations in the number of steps. Two or three along each wall, or the upper and lower bench along the long wall, and the middle one along the adjacent short one, etc.;
 • two parallel structures, symmetrical or asymmetric, installed at opposite walls of the steam room, as in a railway compartment. Or as in the same compartment there are two equivalent tiers of shelves.

Draw several options from which you can choose the best. Only for competent planning and calculation of the cost of purchasing lumber, the exact dimensions of multi-stage or single-stage bath shelves will also be required.

Dimensions of bath seats or beds

To begin with, we list the traditional sizes of places for taking bath procedures in a lying and sitting position:

 • 1.5 m long is needed in order to lie on a shelf with legs bent at the knees;
 • 1.8 m in length will allow the average majority not to bend their legs in the supine position. But according to this parameter, everything is purely individual, sometimes 2.00 m is not enough;
 • 0.4 m - the minimum width of the shelf, most often the lower one, used mainly as a stand under the feet of a bath attendant wielding a broom. It will be quite convenient to stand on such a step, and you can also sit down to freshen up and cool down;
 • 0.6 m - the most common size for the width of the bath shop, however, not too conducive to recumbent soaring;
 • 0.9 m wide will allow you to sit across the shelf with your legs tucked in, and people with any physiological characteristics will be able to lie down.

Variations are permissible, but attendants do not recommend doing less than the minimum limits.

Let's deal with the height of bath furniture

In terms of height, the principles for arranging shelves in a bath are radically different from standard schemes. All calculations begin with determining the height of the upper bench. In order to be able to sit on it, and when waving a broom, treat the back of a lying person, and not the bath floor, the plane of the upper shelf is placed at a distance of 1.10 - 1.20 m from the ceiling. There is another guideline - the level of the steam door of the heating equipment. It's up to the owner to decide if it's worth sticking with.

The height of the bath benches varies from 0.4 m to 0.6 m. A “run-up” of 20 cm will allow you to slightly raise or lower the line of benches in the drawing so that the required number of steps is in the steam room. The main thing is that the lower tier should be at least 0.3 m above the floor surface.

Note. Most often, the lower component of a multi-stage structure is not attached to the floor, but is made in the form of a portable bench so that the floor can be washed and dried under it. A very heavy lower stage is equipped with specific skids that move along rubber guides.

Rules for the construction of shelves for the steam room

 • Between the walls of the steam room and the shelves there should be a ventilation gap of 10 cm. When the steps are fixed to the walls, this gap is provided by installing pieces of timber. More precisely, first a beam cut into segments is attached to the wall, then the frame elements are screwed to it with self-tapping screws with heads recessed into the array.
 • The recommended dimensions of the beam for the construction of the frame are 50 × 70 mm. The thickness of the board should be four times less than its width so that the wood can dry completely.
 • The number of supports is determined by the thickness of the planks. If the thickness of the board is 22 cm, then there should be at least 0.6 m between the supports.
 • For the stability of the frame support, it is desirable to tie the board both from above and from below along the entire length.
 • Rubber pads must be nailed to the bottom surface of the legs of all stationary steps and portable benches.
 • Instead of self-tapping screws, it is advised to use wooden pins hammered into holes drilled under them, or wooden nails as fasteners for flooring boards. If nothing was found except self-tapping screws, it is better to mount from the back so that metal parts do not burn users. Metal, after all, heats up much stronger and faster than wood. If there is no way out and you have to fasten it from the outside, be sure to bury the metal caps in the sweat.
 • There must be a gap of at least 1 cm between the planks of all elements of the flooring of the seat-beds.

Attention. When calculating the purchased material, do not forget about technological indents.

The sides of the steam rooms, made in accordance with the Finnish bath rules, are made with ventilation gaps by analogy with the construction technology of the entire flooring. However, in Russian bathhouses, the sides were sewn up tightly with a board to reduce the cubic meters of space heated by wasted steam. Of course, the steam room reduced by this method will heat up faster, but the wood of the floor hidden under the furniture and wall decoration will also dry out worse. What is more practical, the owner will choose.

There are no special tricks in how to make a bath bench or shelves in the bath. The shop - it will be it in Africa too. The main thing is not to forget about the features of the construction of a multi-stage bath structure and responsibly get down to business.

How to make shelves for a bath with your own hands: dimensions, device, manufacturing

The construction of bath furniture has its own specifics. Information on how to properly make shelves for a bath with your own hands will help you competently equip a steam room.
