Wooden wheel chandelier drawing. DIY wagon wheel chandelier. Advantages of round structures

Wooden wheel chandelier.

If there is no real wheel, how to make it yourself?

The chandelier, made in the form of a wagon wheel, looks very original and can decorate the interior of a room, which is decorated in a rustic style (ethnic style). The wheel can be made with your own hands of the desired diameter from a furniture board 40 mm thick. To make one wheel, take two shields, carefully cut out two large outer circles and two small central circles from them. Already purchased wooden balusters can serve as knitting needles, they will only have to be shortened to fit the size of the wheel. Glue the cut out parts of the large circle with each other. The diameter of the outer circle and the inner one must be divided into the same number of segments, mark the places where the knitting needles will be fixed, they can be put on glue and fixed with self-tapping screws.

If necessary, sand everything, the wheel can be treated with stain and varnish.

Drill holes for the cartridges with a forstner drill, insert the cartridges into place. Make the electrical wiring of the lamp and connect the chandelier to the electrical cable, screw in the light bulbs.

The wheel can be attached to the ceiling with threaded hooks or metal brackets and a strong chain.

And this, made from boards:

Cart wheel lamp

How to make a chandelier out of a wheel with your own hands?!

Once upon a time in Russia, carriages and carts were the main means of transportation. Now, finding a real wheel from them to use as an element of country decor is not so easy. One of the options is to make a decorative wheel yourself, as the participants in the Home and Dacha forum did. The task is simplified by the fact that in this case it is not necessary to follow old technologies, creating a durable product on special equipment that must withstand many kilometers of travel.

However, there is another way - to find a real wheel somewhere in the countryside. In this case, the chandelier will be truly unique! Already known to our readers, the forum member ottt turned out to be such a lucky one. Local residents brought him well-preserved wheels from a cart, the rim of which was made up of two bent halves, and not separate segments. The decision came immediately - to make a chandelier in the gazebo.
lamp, chandelier from a wheel from a cart. With your own hands.

Treatment

With an iron brush on a drill, Ott carefully cleaned the surface of the wheel from road dirt and loose wood. Then he mixed linseed drying oil with turpentine and soaked the tree in several layers with this composition.

The rim was treated with a rust remover with an anti-corrosion effect.

By the number of spokes (12), the forum member calculated the number of lamps - 6 pieces (12 would be too much).

Six E14 minion cartridges were purchased - they looked more sophisticated than full-sized E27s. Light bulbs imitating candle fire were also purchased.

The next step was to decide how to fix the fixtures. At the end of the cartridge there was a threaded hole M10. Wires should also go through it. The forum member came up with the following idea: he drilled non-through holes (15-20 mm) in the wheel for the wires to exit (perpendicular, 10 mm in diameter, and at an angle of 45 degrees, 6 mm in diameter).

I screwed "adapters" made of nylon dowels with a diameter of 10 mm into the cartridges. Then the cartridge was screwed onto the dowel along its thread, while squeezing out the reciprocal grooves. It turned out a threaded connection. Thanks to the "stabilizers", like a rocket, the cartridge securely took the hole prepared for it in the rim.

In order for the “stabilizers” to tightly press against the body of the dowel, it is necessary to rotate in one direction.

He extended the Ott wires into an inclined "outlet" channel and connected the cartridges in parallel.

The lower part of the dowels fit snugly into the wheel rim, and there was no need to glue it.

From the purchased galvanized chain 5 mm thick with a short link, the owner decided to make it black - antique. He melted the oven and baked the chain, as he did with the forged elements prepared the day before.

It's time for the rings. They are needed to attach the chain to the forged elements. All connections were made by OTT with conventional tools, without a welding machine. The rings were made of steel (preferably rusty) wire, for which I used a rod with a diameter of 4-6 mm. He unwound it from the fence post, straightened it, then wound it loosely on a round frame with a diameter of 12-15 mm (a piece of a ski pole). Then he cut the rings out of the wire with a grinder.

The disk should not be driven perpendicularly, but slightly at an angle to the bar.

Meanwhile, the chain slowly cooled in the coals. For complete cooling, the ottt removed it to a non-combustible surface, waited until it became warm, and treated it with a rust remover. The forum member fastened the forged elements to the wheel using a drill, a 3.5 mm drill, 3.5 x 32 self-tapping screws and a screwdriver. Self-tapping screws then painted over with black matte varnish.

I measured the necessary segments of the chain, cut the last link with a grinder with a thin cutting disc. After heat treatment, the chain became pliable, like plasticine. With a screwdriver, Ott easily spread the ends to the sides and removed the desired segment, after which he again flattened the links.

He brought the extreme links into the prepared rings, connected them with forged elements. Here, effort was required, since the rings were not subjected to fire treatment and were springy. Ugly joints were hidden inside the curls.

Finally, the finished chandelier had to take its place. A suspension with an 8 mm thick cable stretched inside with a loop at the end of the ottt was led into a hole in the pipe and “pierced” with a pin. The connection was disguised with a towline. The chandelier can be easily removed, but you need an assistant to install it.

Features of lighting fixtures

A wooden chandelier can become not only a part of the stylish decoration of a room, but also transform it, bring in the desired shade of antique rough simplicity or elegant elegance, create an atmosphere of courageous Middle Ages or Japanese austerity.

A do-it-yourself wooden chandelier can be an original gift for loved ones, filled with warmth of feelings and positive energy. In addition, it will be exclusive and unique, since it can be made in a single copy.

Structural Benefits

Wood products, including chandeliers, have a number of positive qualities inherent in all items made from natural materials:

  • Ecological cleanliness of the product, the absence of harmful emissions are important factors in the desire to create a comfortable room in which you can lead a healthy lifestyle.
  • Wood is a material that can be easily processed, from which you can make products of unusual beauty, artsy, with graceful lines, or suitable in style, simple and practical lamps.
  • The versatility of the use of wood structures allows you to use it both independently and in combination with contrasting materials: metal, textiles, forged elements, glass, leather, allowing you to create chandeliers with different properties that are different from each other.

Caution in operation

  • The hygroscopicity of wooden appliances leads to a change in shape, cracking of the surface when they enter a humid environment. Therefore, it is not recommended to install wooden chandeliers in damp rooms with high humidity, such as bathrooms, basements.
  • The combustibility and fire hazard of wooden lamps makes it necessary to provide additional safety measures against fire. Do not place them near stoves, chimneys, near open flames, for example, near fireplaces, in the area of sparks. The design of the chandelier must have reinforced insulation at the points of attachment of ceiling lamps, cartridges, incandescent lamps.
  • It is advisable to install in them fluorescent, halogen, LED lamps with reduced heat generation.
  • To protect against damage by insects that can spoil and destroy wood, its surface should be covered with special antiseptics.

Despite the fact that the manufacture of each product is individual and depends on the imagination and abilities of the master, there are several typical models that are often used for installation in the country house, in the kitchen, or in the living room. They are quite simple to manufacture, do not require large material costs, have an original look, and are combined with different interior styles.

Creating a wheel lamp

This chandelier is made in the shape of a wagon wheel. At present, it is difficult to find a finished wheel that is suitable in size and quality, therefore, it is possible to cut out the desired design, as can be seen in the photo, from two square-shaped shields with a side length of 1 m, a thickness of 40 mm.

Wooden balusters are easy to make yourself or purchase from a distribution network.

Wheel chandelier

Depending on the style of the interior, it is better to process the edges and surfaces carefully, or deliberately casually, as if cutting down with an ax.

Carefully, strictly according to the diameter of the lamp socket, the corresponding holes are drilled. The connection of lamps can be prudently divided into groups: evenly (4 + 4) or practical (2 + 6, 3 + 5).

The assembled structure should be varnished in 2 - 3 layers. Its shade is selected in accordance with the rest of the interior. It is advisable to use LED or halogen lamps that do not cause excessive heating of the wood.

It is desirable to hang it in this way: directly to the ceiling, at different levels using metal chains, forged fasteners, with adjustable height.

It seems to me that in many village yards one can find an old wheel from a cart to which horses were harnessed. This, in terms of homemade products, is quite an interesting material that can be easily used in the interior of a garden plot. And you can, as in the example of the author, make a rustic-style chandelier out of it.

For work you need:
the wheel itself, varnish or impregnation, pads for connecting wires, cartridges, lamps, cable, a screwdriver and drills of various types, pliers, wire cutters and a screwdriver.

We take the cart wheel. Even if it is not very well preserved, it will give the finished product a certain charm. We clean it of any debris, clean it with an emery cloth and cover it with impregnation for wood and then with varnish.

Small non-through holes are drilled into which hooks will be inserted, for which the chandelier will be hung from the ceiling. You can buy them both ready-made, and make them yourself from wire, there is nothing complicated about it. Hooks are located on the rim of the wheel, through 120 degrees.

All metal parts are painted with any paint that matches the color scheme of the interior of the room in which the chandelier will be located. The chain on which the product will hang is also painted. You can simply dip it in a can of paint and hang it over it to drain off the excess.

Now the cartridges are mounted. The author decided to hang five of them on the wheel. The large lamp will be placed on the central axis. The remaining four holes need to be drilled. A feather drill is taken and holes are drilled in the wheel rim. They contain bulb holders. The holes must be through, as the wires from the cartridges will be located on the top of the wheel rim. The lamps will be located below. The author’s holes for the cartridge turned out to be back to back, so they don’t need to be fixed with anything, although you can fix them for reinsurance.

For the convenience of connecting all the wires to each other, the author screwed the terminal blocks into the side of the sleeve, through which the connection will be made. We leave a small piece of wire to connect the chandelier to the network.

Now the chandelier can be hung.

It took 2 hours to work. The result is an interesting thing that will decorate your room and illuminate it.
Creative success and implementation of all your ideas!

The theme of chandeliers is endless and immense. We have already confirmed this more than once with our examples, citing possible options on our website. However, there are not many options. After all, each of us has his own customs. Tastes, preferences and goals. Yes, yes, goals also play an important role in the choice and manufacture of a chandelier, because somewhere grace and charm are required, in the form of crystal playing in the world, but somewhere you simply cannot do without a redneck. Everything according to the theme and application of the chandelier for each of the specific rooms. So we believe that for a bar, a large living room with a fireplace, or even a gazebo or an open terrace, you can not do without a chandelier. With one of the best chandeliers for such places, there will be an ordinary wagon wheel decorated to match this very chandelier. That is, sort of like in a bar in the old west, when candles were placed around the perimeter of the wheel, and the wheel itself was suspended from the ceiling. It is this option that we will consider today.

What you need for the Cartwheel chandelier

For production work, you will need a board 80 * 40 * 300, planed. Wooden block 20*40*300. PVA glue. You will also need self-tapping screws, wires, wire, lampholders, stain and a brush. You can raise the chandelier on a chain, which should also be included in the budget of your event.

How to make a chandelier "Wheel from a cart"

Perhaps one of the main and most important is to correctly mark the wooden blanks, which will become the basis for the skeleton of our chandelier and thus the decorative wheel. In our case, we make the markup into 8 parts, we also divide the wheel into sectors into 8 parts, that is, the angle will be 45 degrees. It is with this angle that the spokes will be located between each other. And if this is translated into an angle for bars, then it will be (180-45) / 2 = 67.5 degrees.

We apply the bars and make saw cuts along the marked lines. We drill the resulting bars from both sides, while inserting a dowel on one side. There is an empty hole on the other side. As a result, the bars should fit one into the other, like chain links one by one. Thus closing the circle.

That is what we are doing next. We apply PVA glue to the mating surfaces and finally fasten everything with strap tape. The tape will hold and tighten the structure until the glue dries.

It is desirable to use flat surfaces at the top and bottom to prevent the wheel from pulling to the side. In our case, plywood and stones of considerable mass were used. We wait 12 hours.

After we look what happened.

We cut out the central octahedron to which the wheel spokes will be attached. We also drill a hole for the dowels and string the knitting needles on them using glue.

The end result should be something like this.

But along the perimeter of the wheel, we fasten the spokes with self-tapping screws.

Wheel chandeliers

To make the wheel look like a wheel, and not an 8-sided one, we cut down and grind along the entire perimeter and according to the radius.

In order to make it easier to carry out all procedures, including subsequent painting, you can build a simple device.

Now let's move on to communications on the chandelier, that is, to the installation of wiring and lamp holders. In this case, we use an ordinary copper wire and mounting brackets for it.

It remains to hang the chandelier on a chain, screw in the lamps, definitely the ceiling lamps in the form of fire. 5 chains are used as a suspension. One in the center and 4 on the sides.

That's actually all, the chandelier is ready and now pleases with its unique charm and, of course, much-needed light in the right place. You can see other options for making chandeliers in the article "Chandelier with your own hands".

P.S. Subsequently, the author made another chandelier, but with a change. So, in particular, he began to make dowels on both sides of the knitting needle. So it was more convenient and all the knitting needles fall into place in tension. The design is more rigid even without self-tapping screws.
