What can transform an ordinary bathroom. The interior of the bathroom is a space for experiments and original ideas. Floor in the bathroom

“Will I have a bathroom without tiles? Oh no! It’s impractical and inconvenient,” is a question that tops my list of exclamation points when it comes to discussing bathrooms.

Until now, although the year is 2019, not 1919, it is widely believed that floor-to-ceiling tiles are the salvation of repairs, a guarantee of long service life and high-quality maintenance of perfect cleanliness of showers and bathrooms.

So is it a myth? Or reality? Is it really possible to live without tiles on the walls, or is it really very bad in terms of modern design. Let's discuss this topic today, let's talk: is there life without tiles.

When you start renovating a bathroom, in 80% of cases you will start it with a search for tiles. An unshakable conviction remained in the mind that the bathroom should have tiles from floor to ceiling, and also with decor, with different flowers, birch trees.

Designer's nightmare: Ural ceramics with decors

And so you painfully go shopping, choose the most beautiful "flowers", trying them later, by all means, be sure to apply them somewhere.

If I start to dissuade the customer from 100% filling the bathroom space with tiles, then I mentally prepare how to go into battle. Of course, this does not happen all the time, but sometimes it happens.

But the history of finishing bathrooms does not begin with tiles at all.

This is my point of view and today I will try to explain to you why I think so, in which cases tiles are needed up to the ceiling, in which they are not needed at all, and is there an alternative.

It's a banal thing to say, but the choice of decorating any space in a dream home begins with choosing a style for the whole house as a whole.

Call it a style, a story, a concept, whatever you want.

Advice: if you make repairs all over the house at once, then all the details of the interior should be strung on a thread like beads. Everything should flow smoothly into each other, be interconnected, pleasing to the eye and, of course, practical!

Now note for yourself what I emphasized about the renovation of the whole house. Since a little later we will touch on the issue of redecorating just a bathroom without the rest of the apartment.

burlingtonbathrooms.ru

Style dictates finishing always. If I choose minimalism in its purest form (and this is a very bold decision for an ordinary person), then I make bathrooms in minimalism. If the classics, then the classics with angels stucco and so on.

Finishing can be chosen for bathrooms, depending on:

 • tasks
 • concepts
 • desires

In any style, you can use tiles, you can refuse it completely or partially. The main thing is to do it wisely. Therefore, let's not cut off "from the shoulder", but sensibly analyze each situation, and they are very different.

Refusal of tiles in bathrooms is the use of other materials for walls, such as paint and wallpaper.

STORY NUMBER 1. YOU COMPLETELY REJECT TILES IN THE BATHROOM:

OPTION 1. You have a large bathroom with a window.

In such a room, you will 100% put a free-standing beautiful bathtub. Maybe you want a fireplace and a complete sense of relaxation.

Tiles up to the ceiling in such a space will look at least strange, at most - strange to the 10th degree.

Lyndsy K. Woods

Option 2. You have a super small and very utilitarian bathroom.

It only has a toilet and sink. Hallelujah, you're lucky again! In such cases, I paint the walls in a beautiful color and we forget about the tiles forever.

I foresee the question: around the toilet and sink without tiles would be terribly impractical.

Others, excuse me, do you and your guests “piss” on the walls? Well, if only in a very drunk state it can be done, I have not heard about other cases from the life of normal people.

What can replace the tiles in the bathroom:

For wall decoration, you can use: natural stone, wallpaper, paint, wood, metal, glass, plaster, brick, MDF and more.

Lots of materials, each is worthy of choice and it all depends on the idea of the interior. If wood, glass and metal are not so questionable, then when it comes to paint or wallpaper, you can hear a million objections why not and not.

What I haven’t heard is that it’s impractical, everything will fall off in six months, there will be mold, the paint will peel off and become like in a public toilet.

horrors in our heads

Let's figure it out. You are afraid of the rejection of tiles from ignorance of modern materials - this is 100%. As sad as it sounds.

Believe me, today's manufacturers of quality paints have gone very far in technology. And at present, modern paint from the Soviet past has absolutely nothing in common. And a lot has already been written about it, and a lot has been said. But still, few people believe and buy tiles, because they believe that it is better, more reliable, more practical.

If, apart from mold, you have no other arguments, then feel free to go to the paint store and they will tell you and show you the best options for the walls. Checked and not once.

I know you want to know what kind of paint I use on projects. I share: I love Dulux for bathrooms and CAPAROl.

If a option number 1(you have a large bathroom with a window) there is probably no point in discussing it within the framework of the article (because I’m not sure that those who have such a bathroom with access to the garden read the site), then option number 2 discuss with examples.

PHOTO- Eric Piasecki for Elle Decor

Under option number 2(small bathroom) all guest bathrooms and toilets in ordinary apartments are suitable. The area is such that only the most necessary plumbing fixtures modestly fit there: a toilet bowl, a sink and a hygienic shower.

In spaces like this, I don't like tiles. It turns an already small room into a cold tunnel. I don’t see the point of laying out all the walls to the ceiling with tiles at all (unless it’s porcelain stoneware with imitation of expensive marble in a certain style or native marble itself).

It is much better and more correct, from my point of view, to make such bathrooms interesting and even unusual. Give them raisins, fool around a little.

Make a gallery of mirrors, paintings or posters.

Or leave everything in a nice laconic design, very minimalistic and stylish. Just painted walls.

PRO CHOICE OF PAINT

To begin with, I beg you not to confuse: paint for wet rooms with just “washable paint”. These are two different compositions, both in terms of technical characteristics and conditions of use. You should only be interested in bathroom paint right now.

Good paint for wet areas will cost a lot. This must be understood.

It is also worth understanding the fact that preparing walls for painting is not at all the same thing as preparing walls for tiles. This is a job that is quite expensive. Because the walls for subsequent painting must be perfectly even. Especially if you are planning a super fashionable glossy paint. She will show every unevenness, and show in all its glory the hack work of the plasterer.

Therefore, when they say that paint is cheaper than tiles, I cannot agree. Everything must be counted. But the painted walls in the bathrooms look much more comfortable to me.

Advice: An indisputable plus of paint may be the fact that updating a bathroom with painted walls is much easier than with tiles. Especially if initially the level of preparatory work (roughing) was very high.

All reputable paint manufacturers today have bathroom items in their arsenal. I will not sharpen the conversation now or recommend anyone alone, but I will say that reading reviews is very useful. Painting is a must. Also, everyone's budget preferences are different.

designworkshome.com

If just paint seems boring, then choose wallpaper. Also special - moisture resistant. This does not mean that water should be poured on them from morning to evening, but sometimes droplets will not harm them, plus they can be washed as needed.

The wallpaper in the bathrooms is very cool. You immediately feel right at home, not in the barracks. The customer once told me about the barracks - he saw such a resemblance in the painted walls in the bathroom.

Studio M Interiors

If you are still afraid of both paint and wallpaper, then consider combining them with wall panels. Usually uh is mounted at 1/3 of the height of the space.

Or swing at the cool panels for the entire bathroom. I'll tell you this is a real luxury. But do it really at a high level.

Be sure to read about moisture-resistant MDF panels on the Internet. And if the question interests you very much, let me know, and I will prompt the most authoritative opinions.

So, we figured out the small bathrooms, the luxury ones too, but what about the average ones that are in most houses and apartments.

What if the bathroom has 100% shower or bath, plus sinks, bidets, toilets. My answer is one - combine tiles (marble, porcelain stoneware) with wallpaper and paint.

I will never advise 100% to abandon the stone - tiles in the wet area. Unless a brave customer himself offers to find an alternative.

Advice: Leave the tiles only in the wet area: around the bathtub and inside the shower, and paint the rest of the space where water does not pour in buckets with a beautiful color or wallpaper.

It is not difficult to do this today. And here, of course, you can save a lot on materials if you choose tiles from expensive collections.

PRINCIPLES OF COMBINING TILE AND PAINT IN BATHROOM.

1 PRINCIPLE TILE ONLY IN THE SHOWER-BATH AREA.

Project by Ekaterina Fedorova

To stone only a small wet area is very modern. Look at the beautiful project of Ekaterina Fedorova, it is very stylish. Laying tiles does not look trite, while, together with skillfully selected textiles, the bathroom has been turned into a real relaxation room.

The first principle of combining materials works great when the bath is arranged in a niche (we talked about the arrangement of niches).

Because the niche itself implies a mini separate space that can and even needs to be allocated. In a niche, it is always convenient to make joints of different coatings through decorative moldings, corner elements (I know for sure that beauty lies in details and knots).

It would be very logical to finish the entire niche inside up to the ceiling (and maybe together with the ceiling) with tiles (stone) and it will look complete and beautiful.

project by Oksana Panteleeva 2016

2 PRINCIPLE TILE ON 1/3 WALL.

A very good option for combining tiles with paint-wallpaper, when the lower part of the walls around the entire perimeter is 1/3 of the height covered with tiles, in the wet area the tile rises to the required height, depending on the shower device.

Anouska Tamony Designs

The mark of the upper border of the tile is often today made according to the height of the box device on the installation. As a rule, this will be approximately 120-130 cm from the finished floor. Then you can adjust this height depending on the size of the tile, so as not to cut it ugly, you can adjust the height of the installation box, which is very convenient.

Studio OINK

The second mark of a good height can be the upper border of the tile in the sink area. As a rule, the tile is raised above the countertop by 10-30 cm (maybe significantly higher). The calculation depends on the furniture, countertops (with or without a side), on the position of the mirror. Remember: absolutely every detail is involved in the process of determining such a node as the height of the tiles on the wall in the bathroom.

project: Ekaterina Fedorova

The third mark of the upper border of the tile is the height of placement in the wet area of the bath or shower. Do not bring the tiles to the ceiling, but stop at a comfortable height so that the accessories in the bathroom are placed correctly (read about this) and observe the beauty from an aesthetic point of view.

Let's summarize the intermediate result: the upper border of the tile can lie along:

 1. the level of the box for the installation of the toilet bowl
 2. sink level (we consider the practicality of use)
 3. level of finish of the wet zone of the bath or shower
CG&S Design-Build

3 PRINCIPLE TILE IS ONLY INSTALLED IN WET AREAS PARTIALLY

In other words, you will only have tiles in the shower area and near the sink. The size of the borders here is determined by yourself.

It can be made in small pieces, only where water gets in, you can lay out large pieces “from floor to ceiling”.

McElroy Architecture, A.I.A.

This solution can be safely applied in modern interiors. But we must pay tribute to the fact that serious and thoughtful work lies ahead.

The task is quite complicated and requires professional training, to decorate the walls skillfully with “pieces” and achieve a worthwhile result, and not so that it looks like “oh tiles weren’t enough”.

www.clarkrichardson.com

Today we talked about how you can do without tiles completely or partially in our bathrooms, while doing everything in a practical, modern and stylish way.

Of course, the choice is yours alone. And I’ll even say more, it also depends a lot on what kind of tile you fell in love with in the salon. Its size, shape, pattern, can also dictate the entire style of the bathroom interior, as well as the installation scheme.

Think over very well all the nodes, transitions. How do you combine tiles with paint. Calculate the entire expenditure item of the budget for preparing the walls for painting and laying tiles. Count all the materials, all the decors, think a hundred times what you want to get in the end!

And only after that proceed with the dream bath project.

Studio Odnushechka

And now, in conclusion, as promised, I want to give advice to everyone who makes cosmetic repairs only to a separate bathroom, without affecting the rest of the house or apartment.

For your story, all of the above is very, very applicable.

You also think about the general style of your apartment, if it is at the moment (for example, the kitchen has already been renovated, and the rooms are being prepared for the next time period). And you also think about saving the budget and you calculate everything well.

Many of the old apartments have separate baths with toilets. For them, it is especially worth considering where it is appropriate to use tiles, and where it is worth just painting and it will be fine.

For those who have no style, and just want clean and good, my advice:

 • Don't be tempted to spend money on various decors and acid shades.
 • Try to take a sensible approach to the choice of tiles, which you will definitely not tear off the walls in the next 10 years.
 • Give preference to concise solutions. Choose solid light shades for tiles, combine it with the painting of the walls, on which you can experiment with color at least every year.

Thank you for your attention! Stay with me! AND…

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR REPAIR!

What room do you use every day, despite its small size? That's right, the bathroom. Here we wash, wash and even wash.
That is why the design of a bathroom usually differs only in its complete practicality, and certainly not in originality and individuality. And the reason for this is a very small area allocated by designers and builders for water procedures. Therefore, most apartment owners do not even think about whether it is possible to “add” space, comfort and harmony to a small bathroom?
But to turn this room into a real masterpiece of design is quite simple.

Walls

Everyone knows that light shades visually “spread” the space (including those who have nothing to do with interior design). But if you lay out the walls of pure white tiles in a small bathroom, the result will not please you (unless you are a fan of hospital procedure rooms).
Therefore, designers recommend not just highlighting the space, but separating it with colored horizontal, vertical or oblique stripes. In this case, tiles of darker shades can be positioned in one of the following ways:

 • only along the bottom of the bathroom, separating it from lighter tones with narrow tiles, the second row of which is best placed one or two tiles below the ceiling level;
 • along the bottom and top of the walls (this design option is most suitable for small bathrooms with high ceilings);
 • on one of the four walls (or in one of the corners, for example, where the shower cabin is installed), “supporting” it with vertical stripes on the other three;
 • in the form of vertical or inclined stripes, matching the color of the bathroom floor;
 • matching vertical stripes of a darker color on one wall (for example, near the bath) with horizontal stripes of the same color on the other (near the mirror).

Well, the shades used in the bathroom for ceramic tiles, which are lined with walls, designers practically do not limit in any way:

 • Blue color (from blue to purple). This is the shade of the sky and the sea, associated with tranquility and peace and tranquility, so it is more suitable for rooms with baths, rather than showers.
 • Green color. All its shades are associated in our subconscious with beauty and youth, so they are very often used in the design of small bathrooms, in which it is required to give a more cheerful design to a small room overloaded with plumbing. In addition, the green color has a unique duality: next to the blue color it looks “cold”, and together with yellow it looks “warm”.
 • Orange is synonymous with warmth and comfort. The color of sand is considered the most popular, but in small bathrooms it is better to use its brighter and cleaner shades, “diluting” it with a white ceiling and stripes of the same color on the walls.
 • Red gives the bathroom different emotions, depending on its shade: delicate pink color will add femininity to the bathroom, while dark burgundy colors will add masculinity and strength.

Ceiling

The most popular ceiling color is white (it can be either matte or glossy). However, designers often use for the ceiling shades of those colors that were used when choosing ceramic tiles for wall cladding. In this case, the shade of the ceiling should be very light, airy and delicate, otherwise there may be a feeling of "pressure".

Floor

It is recommended to choose the color of the floor in accordance with the darkest shade of the wall. Since the open floor space is usually negligible in a small bathroom, using multi-colored tiles or laying them out in a checkerboard pattern is not the best option (it will only add extra load to the room).

The color of the grout between tiles can either match the color of the grout on the walls, or match the color of the tile itself. Here it is worth focusing not so much on the aesthetic perception of the result, but on practicality. In addition, it is customary to lay rugs in the bathroom, which almost completely cover the free area of the floor.

To save space, the washing machine (front-loading) can be partially pushed under the washbasin, slightly raising it from its usual height. If you use the built-in version of the machine with a shallow depth, then it can generally be installed under the washbasin, hidden in the nightstand.

Photo: cdn.freshome.com

If a lot of bubbles and bottles always “live” in your bathroom, you should take care to purchase spacious cabinets (under the washbasin, near the mirror, above the washing machine, and also installed independently in the corner of the room).

Photo: cdn.freshome.com

And do not forget to use the place directly under the bathtub, turning it into an original home-made cabinet, for example, for household chemicals.

Towel dryer and washing machine must be purchased in advance, choosing the most compact of them. If there is a window in the bathroom, the heated towel rail can be replaced with a conventional battery.

And don't forget to look at options like:

 • installation of a shower with a corner tray, and not a bulky long bath;
 • purchase of a corner washbasin;
 • changing the location of the bath (not along, but across the bathroom), which will entail the acquisition of a small bath, but at the same time add free space in the room;
 • replacement of an ordinary mirror (you simply cannot do without it in the bathroom) with a hanging mirror cabinet.

For children's waterfowl toys, it is better to purchase a special mesh bag hung on a hook above the bath.

Bathroom renovation is one of the most costly, time-consuming and complex processes. It would seem that in comparison with the living room, bedroom and even the kitchen, this room is quite small, however, if you calculate the cost of purchasing all materials, plumbing and furniture, it turns out that it is much cheaper to update a nursery or an office.

All the difficulties associated with the repair in the bathroom are caused by the very specifics of this room - subject to regular exposure to moisture and temperature changes, which drastically limits the possibilities for using finishing materials.

In addition, many believe that it is impossible to create an unusual and attractive interior in the bathroom. What could be new in a room where a toilet, sink, bathtub or shower and a traditional bathroom cabinet will be installed anyway? Meanwhile, the interior of the bathroom is a surprisingly wide field for experimentation, a huge opportunity to implement the most extravagant ideas.

Do not be afraid to experiment with the interior of the bathroom - bright tiles and unusual details can turn it into the most attractive room in the house.

And although designers recommend decorating the bath in the same style as the rest of the rooms in the house or apartment, it is not at all necessary to adhere to this postulate. On the contrary, even if the rest of the house is an example of the classics, then it is in the bathroom, which is always separated from other rooms by an interior door, that you can afford to move away from the classic canons and choose brighter colors, unusual solutions and express your individuality. Imagine the surprise of the guests who decide to visit the bathroom, which stands out sharply from the general style of the apartment! Perhaps, thanks to an extraordinary approach, the bathroom will turn into a highlight of the home and set the tone for further alteration.

The choice of material for facing the bathroom

The materials with which the bathroom will be lined must meet the following requirements:

 • resistance to high humidity and sudden changes in temperature;
 • hygiene and environmental friendliness;
 • ease of care;
 • durability.

The last requirement is due to the fact that usually repairs in the bathroom are not made for a year, or even for five years, but for decades - the replacement of utilities and plumbing is too complicated and expensive to do rework often. In addition, most modern plumbing and communications have a fairly long service life, so they need an equally durable frame.

Other options simply cannot compete with this material in terms of popularity - the durability of tiles, a variety of shades, sizes, shapes, a surprisingly wide scope for creativity, durability and ease of maintenance are truly unrivaled.

It would seem that a rather boring tile of different shades of gray in this bathroom does not look like a solid monochromatic field, but looks very stylish and unusual.

The combination of tiles of different shades can create amazingly picturesque pictures in the bathroom, make the room bright and memorable.

A stylish combination of bright red and medium-sized white tiles turned a small bathroom into a masterpiece of design art.

The only drawback of ceramic tiles is that only experienced craftsmen can finish the bath with this material on their own, the rest will have to turn to specialists for help.

The second option for finishing the walls of the bathroom is paint, but not oil, this is already the last century, but based on latex or acrylic, which is not afraid of moisture and will last a long time. The choice of shades is very wide, the field for experiments too, and the owners themselves will be able to paint the walls. The only difficulty is to perfectly level the surfaces before painting, since all the differences and cracks will be very noticeable.

White-painted bathroom walls will look especially bright if you choose dark furniture and dilute the white with bright design details.

Another quite budgetary and not too laborious option for decorating bathroom walls is wallpaper, of course, preferably washable, moisture resistant, for example, acrylic or vinyl. It is worth remembering that three waves should be drawn on a roll of moisture-resistant wallpaper. The walls pasted over with such wallpaper are not afraid of moisture, however, evaporation will penetrate into the joints, so that the wallpaper will not be able to last more than two or three years.

The use of wallpaper in the bathroom also opens up great opportunities for creativity and the widest choice of shades and patterns. And it is much easier to replace such wall decoration than to beat off annoying ceramic tiles.

Another very inexpensive option for finishing the walls in the bathroom is plastic panels. It is not only cheap, but also quite beautiful, besides, it will be possible to decorate both the walls and the ceiling with such panels, creating a cozy and beautiful interior.

It is very easy to take care of plastic, it allows you to hide all pipes and risers, if necessary, it will be easy to get to them, and the owner of the house will be able to assemble plastic panels on his own, without resorting to the expensive help of craftsmen.

However, a void remains under the plastic panels, where condensate will collect and a real colony of fungi and mold can grow, so it is first necessary to treat the walls with a special composition, although such protection cannot be called durable. In addition, plastic panels are easily damaged, dented and scratched.

The combination of different plastic panels can give an unexpected effect, bright and attractive.

By the way, bathroom panels can be made not of plastic, but of PVC or MDF. They look more attractive, but from moisture they can swell in a few years and lose their original appearance.

Drywall, of course moisture resistant, can only be used for wall decoration in a fairly large bathroom. In the future, it can be painted or wallpapered, the walls will be perfectly smooth, but in a tiny bathroom, this method of finishing will “eat up” too much usable space, therefore it is rarely used.

To use drywall or such large decorative elements as stained glass panels in the bathroom, the room must be large enough

Mosaic is also becoming more and more popular - small ceramic tiles, ideal for finishing both large and small rooms, uneven surfaces, columns and sides of the bathroom. It is beautiful, easy to care for, durable, but quite expensive.

A small mosaic in the bathroom is always a win-win option, stylish, attractive, and up-to-date. You can use a single-color mosaic, and a combination of a variety of shades

Often the mosaic in the interior of the bathroom is combined with ordinary tiles, this option will allow you to highlight individual zones and correctly place accents.

Decorative plaster is also an excellent option for the bathroom, only it is desirable to additionally cover it with a layer of varnish on top to reliably protect it from moisture.

Decorative plaster in the bathroom can be of different shades, this option - noble bronze - looks very original

For those to whom financial possibilities allow not to limit themselves to the choice of finishing materials, marble is perfect. Such a bathroom looks like a truly royal bath, luxurious and very expensive. However, marble needs careful maintenance, and the room can look too pompous.

Marble can look rather cold and strict, but it is always stylish and expensive.

Wood is also used in bathroom decoration, but only special types of wood that are not afraid of moisture, for example, relatively inexpensive larch and teak, as well as exotic, expensive species - iron and mahogany. Each plank or panel must also be treated with a special compound that protects the tree.

Wooden panels in the bathroom decoration can be combined with other materials, they always look fresh and make the room more homey and cozy.

The combination of tiles and decorative plaster also has every right to exist.

Among other types of bathroom wall decoration, agglomerate can be distinguished - a type of tile, more resistant, but rather expensive, mirror tiles that allow you to visually embroider a small bathroom, as well as decorative hardboard, which is created on the basis of eucalyptus wood fibers, and is covered with a transparent laminate on top. Self-adhesive film is used very rarely today - it is very inexpensive, but it swells and quickly loses its attractiveness.

As for the bathroom ceiling, most often it is either painted or hidden under plastic or wooden panels, and recently a stretch ceiling has become increasingly popular, with a warranty period of at least 10 years, bright, beautiful and not afraid of moisture.

The blue glossy ceiling in combination with white walls looks especially bright.

A complex ceiling in the bathroom is an option for fairly spacious rooms; a stretch ceiling can also be installed in a tiny bathroom, but it will be of a regular, square or rectangular shape

Plumbing

Today there is such a huge selection of plumbing that only a very conservative person can choose an ordinary semicircular sink without a twist. Besides, who said that the toilet should be white? Plumbing today is not just a functional element of the bathroom, but also an important part of the design, which in itself can become a surprisingly organic decoration of the room.

A mosaic sink with a glass wall - what could be more unusual!

Transparent tempered glass top with steel sink - very dynamic and attractive

A snow-white bowl-bowl on a bright red countertop has become the main decoration of the room

A massive sink in the form of a floor vase serves as a design element in itself

Ultra-modern, surprisingly stylish bathroom with a black toilet, glossy furniture fronts and black mosaics

This version of plumbing is also very exotic - a wooden bath in the form of a barrel and a frame of a completely modern shower cabin, placed on a wooden pedestal, turned an ordinary room into a real bath

As for the bathroom, today it can be of any shape and size, from models in which you can only sit, to huge jacuzzis. Many people prefer to do without a bath at all, making a choice in favor of a shower cabin.

The external walls of the bathroom can be finished with wood, and all the same tiles, the main thing is that it harmoniously fits into the overall interior.

Of course, it is ideal if both a shower and a bathroom fit in the room, but such rooms for ordinary city apartments are an unattainable dream. Often a shower is installed directly in the bathroom, which can be hidden behind a cheerful curtain or transparent glass or plastic panel.

small bathroom

Of course, it is much easier to create a stylish interior in a spacious room, where there is freedom of choice - where to put the toilet and where the jacuzzi. And if the room is tiny, for example, as in typical Khrushchevs, in which the bathroom, which is also combined with a bathroom, has an area of no more than four square meters, and often even less, then it is much more difficult to come up with something original.

There really is nowhere to turn around in such a room, and even if the washing machine is moved to the kitchen, and the bathroom is replaced with a shower cabin, you still cannot call such a room particularly spacious.

In small bathrooms, it is better not to use dark tiles, the best option is to choose light or mirror, prefer not plastic, but a glossy stretch ceiling that can make the room visually taller and try to place all the plumbing as compactly as possible.

There is no bath in a small room, a corner shower is installed, the room is very bright, and it was decided to hang furniture with snow-white facades in an unusual place - above the bathroom

This view from above gives an idea of how the owners managed to put a combined shower in the bathroom. As you can see, the sink has taken its place in the corner, otherwise it would simply clutter up the passage to the toilet.

Another option for a compact arrangement of plumbing is the sink is tiny, but comfortable, all items are very close to each other. The only caveat is that the riser and sewer pipes had to be hidden behind the facades of furniture, created, of course, to order.

Accessories and furniture

In the bathroom, you can do without furniture at all - just a shelf under the mirror, and place all shampoos, gels, soaps and other accessories on the side of the bathroom or a special shelf in the shower cabin.

You can even do without a mirror, but such an interior will be boring, and the room will lose some of its charm and functionality.

Moreover, today you can choose from a huge number of different options for furniture and bathroom accessories - so why deny yourself the opportunity to dream up!

The original sun mirror has become the main decoration of the otherwise strict and concise bathroom.

If the size of the room allows, in the bathroom you can install not just a mirror with a sink, but also a whole dressing table that will turn the room into a beauty salon.

The dimensions of this bathroom made it possible to use several design techniques here at once - beams on the ceiling, niches in the walls, and a stained-glass window that adorned a small mirror.

The owners decided to turn this bathroom into an underwater kingdom. Moreover, this was achieved with the help of a minimum of details and costs - a fishing net was thrown over the simply blue-painted walls, a wicker basket replaced the chest of drawers under the sink, and casually scattered shells and reed stalks installed along the wall emphasize the originality of the interior.

With a little imagination and experimenting with materials, shades and accessories, you can turn a bathroom from a wash room with a boring interior into a place of relaxation, rest and self-care.

Modern design solutions will successfully combine comfort, practicality and refined elegance. The main thing is to observe the measure and not turn the bathroom into a branch of a historical museum or a compartment of a spaceship, literally stuffed with electronics and metal.

Anna Sedykh, rmnt.ru

In the bathroom, we start our day and end it. Therefore, it is hardly possible to overestimate the importance of the bathroom in the house. To make the morning good and the night calm, the bathroom should be comfortable and give aesthetic pleasure to the owners. How to do this - read our material.

Step 1: Color and light

When starting a bathroom remodel, first decide on a theme. Alas, it will not work just to put together everything that you like and get a harmonious interior. The bathroom should either have its own defining theme (marine, floral, black and white, etc.), or at least one accent around which the rest of the interior will be built (curtains, mirror, shelf with flowers).

If you have decided on a theme, then choose the color scheme in which it will be sustained. And in the future, stick to the chosen colors when buying various pleasant things. At the same time, consider the psychological aspects of the perception of colors. For example, blue is cool and relaxing. Green is calming, orange is invigorating, red is energizing and can provoke aggression, and purple can cause depression.

If you have decided only on the accent, then the first thing to do is take care of the lighting. Let your chosen accent be well lit so that it truly is the focal point of the whole interior for anyone entering the space. By the way, the simple movement of light sources can transform the bathroom beyond recognition, even if everything else remains there, as it was.

And with the help of light, you can make the space visually larger. Few people are lucky enough to have windows in the bathroom for natural light, but simple spotlights can do the job of visually increasing the bathroom. Here it is worth considering an important fact: do not use hanging lamps or chandeliers in small bathrooms. They "lower" the ceiling and make the small bathroom cramped and even a little sinister ...

Do not forget also that the competent arrangement of light sources implies their distribution over three levels - upper, lower and working. As a separate zone, it is necessary to allocate the space around the mirror. Here diffused light is best suited - it does not hit the eyes, but at the same time it is bright enough. A lampshade can be used to diffuse light. It is better to choose white color, so as not to be surprised at your reflection in other shades. And in order to beautifully illuminate the surface of the water, you can use a floor lamp with a high stand (under 2 meters). Then taking a bath will turn into a real aesthetic pleasure!

If you are lucky and your bathroom is large, then the lamps on the ceiling can be of different colors. This will create a room zoning in different colors. It is desirable that they gently flow into each other.

You also need to consider that if your bathroom is loaded with shiny decorative elements, then it is better to choose inconspicuous, discreet lamps. And if your plumbing, walls and ceiling are quite simple, then unusual lamps can become a bright accent in the bathroom.

Step 2: Living Plants

Do you want your bathroom to feel like a spa? Add fresh flowers to your interior. The bathrooms are always humid and warm. But usually there is not enough light there ... At the same time, even if you do not have windows in the bathroom, some indoor flowers can feel quite comfortable there. Choose shade-tolerant plants with uniform foliage for bathrooms (variegated foliage needs plenty of light).

In the bathroom, you can place a phalaenopsis orchid, paphiopedilum, saintpaulias, uzambar violets, ferns, dieffenbachia, alocasia, calatheas, ficus and indoor bamboo. If you are reluctant to take care of flowers in pots, then a vase with cut flowers will perfectly decorate the bathroom.

Note that it is best to keep fresh flowers on windowsills or other flat surfaces, but not near heat sources (batteries, water heaters). And do not put them on the washing machine, sink or bathroom. It is desirable that soap splashes do not fall on the flowers. And if you get, then immediately try to wipe them.

We add that the flowers from the bathroom should at least occasionally be taken out for a day on the balcony - so that they are saturated with fresh air.

Step 3: Decorating the Walls

Of course, the walls - their color and texture - play a decisive role in how the bathroom will look. The most popular materials for wall decoration in the bathroom are marble, decorative plaster, mosaic and, of course, ceramic tiles. The latter, by the way, provides the greatest opportunities for effective and practical design of the bathroom.

Ceramic tile for the bathroom must be chosen, taking into account many factors. For example, size. Large format tiles will give the room a modern look. But it is not very well suited for small bathrooms - large tiles do not look appropriate in them. A small tile and mosaic is a classic solution. To date, the choice of ceramic tiles is so wide that you can afford to realize the most daring fantasies.

For risky ones, we suggest choosing tiles that imitate wood, textiles, leather, scales, and even honeycombs. Another great option is to choose digitally printed tiles. Various tile panels look great in the bathroom. The combination of contrasting tile colors looks cool. But it must be carefully considered. And, of course, a mosaic can become a bright accent. It is convenient because it fits well even on uneven surfaces.

Meanwhile, when choosing ceramic tiles or mosaics for the bathroom, you need to take into account that artificial lighting changes the shade of the facing material. And yet - if you choose a material with a glossy surface, then be prepared: when illuminated, it can glare and thereby tire your eyesight.

Step 4: Decorating the Floor

If you want to combine the aesthetics of a flooring material with functionality, then you should choose ceramic tiles or porcelain stoneware. But there are special requirements for this coating: the floor tiles must be waterproof and must have a non-slip coating. Looks great on the bathroom floor ceramic tiles "wood" or "marble". But usually the floor is chosen under the walls and made a few shades darker.

By the way, 3D bathroom floors are popular these days. They can turn the floor into a real ocean! And they are made like this: the selected image is laid on the screed (dolphins, shells, fish in the sea are especially popular for bathrooms), and then covered with a layer of transparent polymer.

Step 5: Mirrors

What bathroom would be complete without a mirror? You can choose a mirror with an original shape or a typical rectangular one with an interesting frame. It should be noted that usually the larger the mirror, the better. Because mirrors can expand the space. And this is necessary for most typical bathrooms in cities. Meanwhile, a mirror cannot be chosen without considering its lighting system. Otherwise, shaving, makeup and even a simple brushing of teeth will turn into a nightmare. Alternatively, you can use mirrors with built-in lighting.

Another caveat: if you decide to choose a rectangular mirror above the sink, then the width of both should be identical. By the way, a mirror wall or a mirror tile wall in the bathroom looks cool. But it should be borne in mind that this is a decorative, not a functional part of the interior.

Step 6: Cabinets and shelves

Cabinets and shelves are needed in any bathroom. After all, they can store all the huge amount of sanitary and hygienic goods. And it’s also worth “hiding” household appliances in them, if you can’t do without it in the bathroom (for example, a washing machine or a water heater). Choose closed or open shelves / cabinets - unprincipled. The main thing is that they are in harmony with the overall style of the bathroom. Also, the material of the shelves (wood, glass, etc.) and their shape (round, square, etc.) should fit into the style. Fortunately, there is no limit to the imagination! And a lot of types of shelves can be made simply with your own hands. It will be a complete zen for your original bathroom!

Another great idea for storing towels. They do not have to be hung on hooks or stacked on shelves. As a towel rack, you can use ... a ladder! But then again, if it fits into the character of your interior. For a loft style or eco-style, for example, this is just what you need!

Step 7: Nice little things

And, of course, what bathroom can do without little things that are pleasant to the heart! There are only two rules here. First, the bathroom should not be cluttered. You should not get carried away in it by collecting cans, flasks, souvenirs. And the second rule - the little things should fit into the overall style of the room.

Shower curtains can be an interesting interior detail. Or coat hooks. Seashells and other marine souvenirs look great in the bathroom. Also scented candles. They can be placed right along the edges of the bathroom. You can also add paintings or framed photographs to the walls on the theme of your interior. But the pictures are even better if you don't have a good exhaust. It is only important to use paintings made with the highest quality moisture-resistant paints.

By the way, a good hood is one of the essential conditions for comfort in the bathroom. Also, the underfloor heating system, which can be installed under the tiles, will add a special comfort to the bathroom.

If you consider all these seven points in the design of your bathroom, there is no doubt that it will become one of the best and most pleasant rooms in the house. We wish you inspiration!

If it seems to you that the person who designed your home went to great lengths to create a tiny and non-functional bathroom, chances are that's exactly what the idea was.

In houses of old construction (30 or more years), the size of the bathroom was not of decisive importance for the residents. Buying real estate, people wanted to have a large living area, spacious bedrooms and a beautiful veranda. The bathroom was considered only as a utility room to meet domestic needs. It was given no more importance than a laundry or a boiler room, and was “squeezed” into any suitable corner, allowing you to place the main functional elements on a minimum area. If the layout of the house included a large bathroom, buyers were surprised by such an unsustainable waste of precious space.

Today, the concept of the bathroom has changed dramatically, it is perceived as a place for relaxation and recuperation. But how difficult it is to allocate a plot of the required space in a standard 1.5 by 3 m bathroom. Those who want to equip the room with additional devices, in addition to the usual washbasin / bath / toilet, still have to cut out square meters somewhere.

Due to the abundance of sunlight and the unity of colors, this small bathroom looks spacious.

You can get out of the situation in three ways:

In fact, find additional meters that can be attached to an existing bathroom to increase its area.

Make a rearrangement in the bathroom to free up and make better use of space.

Decorate the bathroom so that it seems larger and more spacious than it really is.

Actual area increase

There are two options for expanding the space of the bathroom: take part of the area from the adjacent room or complete the missing space. It will be cheaper to "steal" an existing space, so let's look at the first option.

Increasing the area of the bathroom due to the space of the next room

You can combine an entire room with a bathroom and achieve an impressive effect, but not everyone can afford to “capture” such an amount of usable space. If you can’t completely give up one room for the bathroom of your dreams, you can get by with a little blood.

Is there a closet attached to the bathroom? Perhaps there, behind the doors, several square meters are languishing idle next to? Even small pantries can transform an ordinary bathroom into a pleasant and functional space.

Careful planning and careful selection of sanitary ware is the key to creating comfort in even the smallest bathroom.

Remove the adjoining pantry (or the closet that is in the bathroom) to expand the space of the room. Even part of the pantry will do. This little trick has been proven over many years of experience. Most likely, a large built-in wardrobe in the guest room is not very in demand. Leave a little space there in case the children arrive, and donate the rest to the bathroom.

Completion of the missing area

For those who cannot realize a more economical and convenient option for expanding space through rooms inside the house, all that remains is to complete the missing space. You can make a ledge in the wall or a full-fledged extension.

ledge in the wall

If the area can only be increased with exterior walls, overhangs or cantilevered walls provide a little extra space that can be used to house a shower or bath without the need for a costly remodel. Most likely, it will turn out to “win” about 60 cm. It may not seem like a lot, but due to this, the area of a standard small bathroom will increase by 25%. This option is not suitable for every home. First of all, there must be a suitable direction for the floor beams. If the design of the building allows this idea to be realized, you will get additional space at a minimal cost.

Annex

This is the most expensive option, but sometimes there is no alternative to it. Its huge advantage is that you build the extension that you need to create the bathroom of your dreams, rather than "squeezing" the bathroom into the space that you managed to carve out. There are regulatory restrictions on the maximum area and indentation from the red line, the rest depends only on the size of your budget.

Finding extra space inside the bathroom

As soon as you "collect" all the possible area outside the bathroom, it's time to work on the room itself. Even a tiny bathroom will look spacious, bright and distinctive if you follow these simple guidelines.

The art of decorating a small bathroom lies in the combination of functionality, subtle style and the feeling of open space. The main difficulty is to visually increase the space of the room, while at the same time accommodating the necessary plumbing fixtures - a washbasin, a bathroom and / or a shower room, which together will occupy a significant area. Here are some useful ideas, proven over many years of experience.

bathroom door

First of all, consider whether it is possible to change the direction of opening the door. If it opens towards the corridor, and not the bathroom, it will free up a lot of storage space or simply visually increase the space. This idea is not always possible to realize, but if there is such an opportunity, do not miss it.

Elegant furniture is not only for spacious rooms. Install a narrow one with a ledge for the washbasin and large mirrors that will create the illusion of a large space. What about sliding doors? Replace swing doors with sliding doors, which will also save space. This design will cost more than changing the opening direction of a swing door, but if the implementation of a budget option is not possible, a sliding door will be an excellent solution to the problem. Unlike earlier models, modern sliding doors are strong and reliable, you will not have problems accessing the room.

Rearranging and updating the interior

Update plumbing and fixtures to make it easier to move around the room and win some space. The standard depth of a washbasin cabinet is 53 cm, but you don't need that much space to brush your teeth. With the exception of the space around, the 30 cm depth of the cabinet is enough for you. Just like that, you get an extra 23 cm of free space that will give you freedom of movement.

Replace bulky items with thin and elegant ones. First of all, it concerns plumbing. You can completely abandon the purchase of cabinets in favor of a pedestal washbasin, and even better - a wall-mounted one. If your family is more into showers than baths, replace the tub. The shower cabin takes up half the space.

Don't Neglect Corner Space: Corners are full of possibilities. Think about installing a shower or cabinet. Replacing an ordinary bathroom with a corner one, you will reduce the area it occupies by a third.

More storage space

Most bathrooms are equipped with a standard set of furniture: a cabinet for a washbasin, for toiletries and, if there is enough space, a linen cabinet or wardrobe. The dimensions of wall cabinets usually leave much to be desired. Perhaps in the 1940s, when they came into use, there was plenty of room for a safety razor, shaving cream and deodorant. But now even all the vitamins do not fit there. It is inconvenient to store things in a dark cabinet under the washbasin next to water pipes and drains. Linen cases are too narrow and deep, which is why they cannot be practical. In addition, we could never understand why someone would consider a 60 cm deep and 40 cm wide cabinet to be functional if nothing could be found in it.

Given that it always requires painstaking work, why not take care of saving space at the same time. Engage the walls. Wall cabinets are not only for kitchens, they also make a good bathroom storage and decorative element.

For things that are usually placed in a wall cabinet (more precisely, they often fall out of it), provide a small drawer under the washbasin.

Do not leave the walls bare, but use them to the maximum. Every wall that is not occupied by a shower, washbasin or toilet can be considered as a potential location for a cabinet. What about a floor-to-ceiling built-in bathroom cabinet? You will definitely not find this in every home. Wall cabinets are typical for kitchens but rarely used in bathrooms. They are also not deep enough. Bathroom cabinets on either side of the washbasin and above the toilet are a convenient place to store linen and any personal belongings. Corner cabinets that open from two sides will be a very ergonomic solution.

Convert your cabinet to a washbasin. It is terribly inconvenient to store things in standard cabinets. Although there is a lot of space, it is dark under the washbasin and there are many pipes. Everything that is moved deep into the cabinet, most likely, will remain there forever. Pull-out trays and baskets are a must for organizing this space.

The space under the cabinet near the floor can be used for storage by mounting a drawer there. Use the space under the cabinet. The space near the floor under the cabinet is usually left unattended, although it can also be adapted for storage.

Cabinet for electrical appliances. Another good idea is to make a special narrow “electric cabinet” for a hair dryer and an outlet with a residual current device. The cabinet should be installed on the cabinet on the right side (soap dishes should be on the left).

Bring the wires from the hair dryer, curling iron, thermal curlers and electrical panel to the outlet, and store the devices themselves in the tray. You will forever forget about the tangled wires on the dressing table, as they will be hidden behind the cabinet. The socket can be installed in a hanging cabinet or, at worst, in a cabinet behind a washbasin.

Creating the illusion of a large space

If you've tried every opportunity to actually expand your living space, it's time to resort to tricks to visually enlarge the space, enhance its functionality, and make it as easy to use as possible.

Let in more sunshine

One skylight (ceiling opening) with a diameter of 25 cm provides the same level of natural light as a regular window. Make way for the sunlight and feel like being in the open air. Additional windows will never be superfluous, replace small windows with large ones. It's rare to find a bathroom with bay windows, although they do a great job of making the space look bigger and actually add a few extra inches to the room. In addition, the bay window in the bathroom is a humid and sunny place, which is great for growing indoor plants.

Choose artificial lighting carefully

Say goodbye to the dark corners of the room, which visually compress the space, by placing the right artificial lighting in the bathroom. Although the sun is the main source of light, the bathroom needs good lamps. Most often they will be used in the early morning and late evening when there is not enough natural light. In most cases, the lighting in the bathroom leaves a lot to be desired - there is a main lamp in the center of the ceiling and one above the washbasin (usually located directly overhead and creates huge shadows).

It is necessary to provide good central (general) room lighting, as well as bright (but not dazzling) and non-shadowing directional light over each functional area - washbasin, shower, bathtub and vanity.

Use reflective surfaces

Reflective surfaces increase the level of illumination and create the illusion of a large space. Dark and matte surfaces can make a bathroom feel overwhelming.

The most heinous crime is blackout shower curtains. We do not know where the opinion came from that the bathroom should sink at dusk, but we really want to dissuade you from this. Thick curtains in the shower visually “eat up” almost a meter of space. That's one third of the entire 1.5m x 2.5m bathroom. Of course, privacy is essential when you're in the bathroom, but you can just lock the door. Get rid of heavy curtains. Ideally, it is desirable to change it to a high transparent door, or at least to a transparent curtain.

Nothing but glass and light create the illusion of a large space. But you don’t need to “flood” the room with mirrors, because they can give rise to an unpleasant feeling of disorientation. Carefully selected mirrors, placed in the right places, will make the bathroom feel spacious and the lighting brighter.

Avoid fashion trends

Don't be tempted by trendy colors by choosing durable items like plumbing fixtures and cabinets. The “orange rose” washbasin, so much admired by designers today, will go out of fashion in five years and join the legion of avocado and hot pink washbasins, which sadly have to be replaced solely because of the color. If you absolutely cannot do without trendy shades, paint the walls with them, look for suitable wallpapers and accessories that are easy to replace when the color is no longer a trend. And this will definitely happen.

Create a cohesive design with strong horizontal lines

Strong horizontal lines, light, monochrome colors and an abundance of reflective surfaces will create the illusion of a really large space. A single design style with repetitive colors, textures and materials will make the bath coherent and visually expand the territory due to smoothed boundaries between the main functional areas. For example, if the floors, countertops, and shower tray are the same material, such as ceramic tiles or stone, you will perceive them as parts of a whole, and not as separate elements.

The color palette should be light and monochrome. Dark wood "compresses" the space. Light maple, walnut, alder and pine wood or light paint will visually enlarge the room. Sharp color contrasts make the eye “cling” to different details and visually break up the room. If color contrast should still be present, then only soft, gradual and well combined. Using plumbing, tiles, paint, and white flooring is a win-win design approach. This will not only create the illusion of infinity, but also brighten up the space, creating a neutral tone for accent towels, accessories and decorative tile elements.

While strong horizontal lines visually enlarge the space, vertical lines reduce it. Wall paneling is a great move, as are horizontal rows of dark on a light background. Avoid columns and wide vertical stripes on wallpaper. In addition, large windows are not only an abundance of sunlight, but also beautiful landscapes that give a feeling of spaciousness.

Clean lines and visual space borrowing

Small but well-designed “human-sized” bathrooms are better than huge gallery bathrooms, which are now giving away too much usable space. At the same time, a small room will turn into a cramped cage if it does not have clear long lines.

Borrow viewing space from other rooms or even outside the house (using windows). This will make the room appear larger as you see the space outside of it. Even a small window and a drop of sunlight will make the room feel less closed off. But remember that good visibility of other rooms from the bathroom usually means good visibility of the bathroom from the other side. It is necessary to find the optimal balance between openness and personal space.
