She decided to change course at exactly the stage in her career that many of her colleagues dream of staying. Tatyana stopped working on catwalks around the world and shooting advertising campaigns for Givenchy and Calvin Klein, moved from New York to London, got married, gave birth and ... plunged headlong into business. A year and a half of planning, design development and everything else that is necessary to launch your own business, and now clothes under the Silou London brand are willingly chosen by healthy girls in the UK.

In December 2017, Kovylina gave birth to a daughter. The mother of three emphasizes that her clothes are ethical. “I am developing a business towards women: we make clothes for women, women work for us, we help a small female community that needs it,” Tatyana lists. “This is, as they say here, empowering women – support for the women's community.”

One example of the recognition of Kovylina's efforts and weight is the fact that in February Madonna invited Tatyana to participate in the Raising Malawi charity project. By the way, the singer herself was the art director of the photo shoot, which will be put up for auction.

Begin with yourself

Marie Claire: Tatiana, you're in business, but Wikipedia is still listed as a Victoria's Secret Fashion Show model...

Tatyana Kovylina:...this title is on me for life! (Laughs.)

What would you write yourself?

I'm not going to put an end to the past - I think what I'm doing now has become possible thanks to my modeling experience. But I want to talk about the principles on which we built the sportswear brand. We are trying to do at least what little we can for the planet. For example, to use ethical materials and the European organization of production. When I got to the factory where our clothes are made, I was able to compare the conditions in which women work in China or Vietnam. All of these aspects were taken into account: non-toxic materials and organic fabrics, fair labor and the decision not to use plastic. It can be added that in our office recycling - waste processing - is practiced by everyone. We proceed from the principle “if you want to change something, start with yourself”. Health is important on a planetary scale - both personal and family health, and a healthy atmosphere at work, and the right attitude to life.

At the age of 25, I already clearly knew that I was leaving the modeling business. I realized that it was impossible to endure such a rhythm, while remaining a mentally normal person.

and in 2010 in New York

What was the most difficult thing in business?

I had to learn the whole business side from scratch. To get acquainted with the production line, with factories, to study how and where the threads are made, how much they travel - the whole process. It was complicated. Also an inevitable problem for anyone who has their own business is the human factor, the people who work for you. They need to be motivated, to make them believe in the cause, just like you. It takes a huge amount of strength - physical and moral.

But achievements motivate. For example, recently the British Fashion Council - an organization that supports "young" initiatives - gave us a grant for business development. Recognition is valuable, especially since I have little to do with England.

You have been living in London for seven years now. Is there a difference in the attitude of women towards themselves here and in Russia?

Giant. Such well-groomed women, as in Russia, are nowhere else. We have a cult. From an early age, no matter what the budget, everyone is trying to create the best version of themselves. I remember that my mother told me as a child what masks to make, and we went to the bathhouse and rubbed ourselves with scrubs. I envy British women a little - their self-confidence. It doesn’t matter that she never had a manicure in her life or she didn’t go for a facial massage, she doesn’t dye her hair, no one will dissuade her that she is the most magnificent woman on the planet. It is more pleasant for me to look at our women, but I think that a balance is still needed.

How old were you when you left the podium?

25, at 26 I gave birth to my first son. But at the age of 25, I already clearly knew that I was leaving the modeling business. I made the decision to leave America, although I had previously been convinced that my whole life would be connected with New York. Over time, I realized that it was impossible to endure such a rhythm, while remaining a mentally normal person. I decided to return to Europe to be closer to my family, relatives, and my roots. And then my hobby played a huge role - I don’t want to use the expression “healthy lifestyle”, although it is, in fact, about it. It seems to me that healthy lifestyle has recently become like an obsession. Perhaps a synonym is needed in which "healthy" will mean "moderate and normal."

So, having moved, I began to get involved in yoga, meditation, spiritual practices, I realized that this was close to me. I wanted to combine my two interests (after all, I still have a love for fashion). And I came up with the idea to combine these two passions - in my brand.

Why yoga and not something else?

Probably because it is more a way of life than just a sport. You do not compete with anyone - not even with yourself, you respect the limits of your own body. One breath can change the state of consciousness, cope with anxiety and pain. You need to remind yourself every day that you need to breathe properly in order to function properly. In order for the brain and lungs to work, the blood supply was normal.

What does “excellent physical shape” mean to you?

I had different periods when visually the shape was excellent, but not for my body. When I exhausted myself with both exercises and work.

And why were they tortured?

Good question! Probably because at some point I was also very interested in the notorious healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, it all almost ended badly. When you lose weight to such an extent that you seem beautiful to yourself, but a couple of years later, looking at those photos is scary.

My naturopath and endocrinologist worked for forty years in the court of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. He also saved Princess Diana from the habit of starting the day with the traditional "greasy spoon breakfast" of beans, scrambled eggs and bacon.

How much weight did you lose in one go?

There was a period when I weighed 52 kilograms with my height of 177 cm. Right on the edge. I felt disgusting. I was also a vegan and did not eat anything that contains fat. In general, I had everything - as I thought - according to the book, but this did not add strength to me.

In December, you became a mother for the third time. Did you set the task to return to the previous form of ASAP?

I understand that the body will never return to its previous state. Yes, you can lose centimeters and kilograms, but I feel completely different than before my third child. I haven't felt so relaxed about myself in a long time. Thank God that I gave birth to three healthy children. And I can do yoga. I work, I live. I don’t want anything more than that from myself - neither a waist of 55 cm, nor cubes on my stomach. My priorities have changed: I just want to be calm and good, so that I can live happily ever after.

I wonder how you eat: could you write down the diet for one day?

I eat, giving preference to seasonal organic products. Proteins and fats make up the bulk of the diet. I start the morning with porridge made from flax seeds, pumpkin, sunflower seeds, nuts soaked overnight, cooked in homemade almond milk with the addition of oatmeal or buckwheat and dried fruits with coconut oil. The recipe, by the way, was shared by my naturopath and endocrinologist, who worked for forty years at the court of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. By the way, he was the first to save Princess Diana from the habit of starting the day with the traditional "greasy spoon breakfast" of beans, scrambled eggs and bacon, instilling a culture of healthy eating in the then very young and very well-fed princess.

Is meat on your menu?

In general, 85 percent of my diet is vegetarian. I rarely eat meat, making sure that the life path of the killed creature was not overshadowed either by the lack of sunny days in free meadows, or by the use of antibiotics and other rubbish. Livestock in small quantities we breed on the farm. I love fish, but I eat it carefully, in many oceanic rocks the level of heavy metals goes off scale. I add algae to food, they are rich in minerals and iodine, and we, northerners, need this.

How to exercise when breastfeeding?

I practice yoga and work out in the gym 2-3 times a week for 40 minutes. But I try not to overdo it, because the milk immediately leaves. And then I will enter the same mode in which I lived before. Moderate aerobic exercise, yoga as the main sport and more time in the fresh air. In terms of nutrition, I will not change anything - moderation is important as a general principle.

Do you introduce older boys to sports?

They do not yet have a very close relationship with sports. They dance, sing, ride bicycles, occasionally do yoga with me. It’s impossible to accustom to structured classes, but I don’t want to put pressure on them. It seems to me that children are wise creatures, they have thoughts that need to be listened to. And they regulate their loads and appetite very well, if you do not interfere harshly.

Thank God I gave birth to three healthy children. My priorities have changed: I just want to be calm and good, so that I can live happily ever after.

You have a section on your site where you give advice. What is the best advice you have ever received in your life?

Grandfather said: every day you must definitely walk, try not to eat in public catering and periodically go out into nature. When I was little, this advice, of course, seemed like an empty phrase to me, but by and large it is. It all comes down to how you digest stress. Let me remember another wise phrase: it is not so important what you eat as what eats you from the inside. Our thoughts can both poison life and charge it positively. Although, of course, easier said than done.

What does a working mom's day look like in London? I know that your office is literally across the street from home, and this at least relieves the stress of standing in traffic jams.

And there is. A typical morning: children go to school, I dedicate an hour to myself: sports, yoga - and to the office. Creation of new models, moodboard, choice of fabrics I still don't trust anyone. I demand a lot from my employees, I cultivate attention to detail. I encourage initiative. I am a member of the British Fashion Trust - this organization supports British fashion designers, warming each year the rising stars of the industry under its wing. BFT organizes lectures and meetings with fashion figures. For me, this is primarily access to the network and the exchange of experience.

Surely there were mistakes at the start?

The most difficult thing is to draw a thick line separating business and family. I have not yet learned how to allocate time, so if I am with my family, then work is patiently waiting. My husband does it brilliantly. As if the button is turned off - and it is entirely ours. True, she just as abruptly turns on. My button is clearly stuck, I need to fix it.

And it's all about her

At that time, she studied at the Kazan State Financial and Economic University.

Career

The professional career of a young and talented model began in 2002, when she took part in the show of a Belgian designer. The beautiful appearance of the young model was noticed, and the girl even got on the cover of a popular French magazine.

Then for some time in Tatyana's career there was a lull. In 2003, she was practically nowhere to be seen, she only occasionally participated in second-rate fashion shows.

In 2004, fortunately, the girl's career went up again, and not just went, but ran by leaps and bounds. She participated in more than 30 shows in one season, photos of Tatyana Kovylina adorned the pages of many fashion magazines, including Vogue, Glamour, Elle. Tatiana now

The girl abandoned her modeling career. Now she is the wife of an oligarch, mother and business woman.

The girl wanted to leave the modeling business almost at the peak of her fame. At the age of 25, Tatyana decided that she wanted to remain a mentally sane person, and being a model is almost impossible to do.

From frenzied New York, Tatyana Kovylina moved to live in quieter London, found an oligarch husband, and gave birth to three wonderful children. Now Tatyana wants a quiet life, simple family happiness. She admits that she used to weigh 52 kg with a height of 1.77. Then she doubted that she would ever be able to endure and give birth to at least one healthy child.

Her sons are already schoolchildren, 11 and 8 years old, while her daughter was born at the end of 2017.

Now Tatyana has time for everything. Her daily schedule includes the following items: in the morning she gathers the children to school, then she devotes one hour to herself - exercises, breakfast, yoga, then the woman goes to work. She owns the Silou London brand.

As Tatyana herself admits, she is very demanding and strict towards her employees. However, a woman does a lot in her business herself, for example, she does not trust employees to create new models and choose fabrics.

Tatyana's husband

Tatyana's husband's name is Yuri Shefler, he is ranked 56th on the Forbes list of Russian billionaires. He left Russia over 15 years ago and now has a huge liquor business and a wide variety of real estate scattered around the world. One example is owning a huge hunting ground in Scotland, which is worth around $31 million.

He helped his wife start and grow her business and is currently giving his wife good advice.

Tatyana says that he is an ideal husband and father, he is perfectly able to separate work and family, which Tatyana herself does not always succeed in.
